Robin’s Review

Many thanks to Grand Central Publishing and NetGalley for providing a copy of Walk Through Fire in exchange for my honest review.

When I read a novel written by Kristen Ashley, I can always count on a solid plot, her trademark alpha males, humorous dialogue, gripping romantic suspense, and her famous conversational writing.  Since a great deal of her novels are set in and around the area of Denver, Colorado, Ashley has the luxury of including characters from other series she has written in her new novels.  It’s something that I love and look forward to with her writing!  It actually enhances my reading experience because I enjoy revisiting her characters.

Ashley’s writing is very distinctive.  If someone were to randomly read to me an excerpt from one of her books, I would undoubtedly recognize her writing in a heartbeat.  She has a fantastic sense of humor, and her male characters always tend to be very dominant. Each main couple has a unique situation going on in their lives.  Many of us can relate to the kinds of situations her couples deal with, such as having a jealous ex-husband or dating while going through a divorce or even dating someone who has children from a previous marriage.

Logan “High” Judd and Millie Cross are the primary love interests in Walk Through Fire, and their story is a second-chance romance.  We visit their past relationship via memories, when they were very much in love as a young couple.  Millie was immediately and completely taken by Logan, but it really was love at first sight for both of them. I felt Millie’s incredible loss when they separated, even when I didn’t understand why it happened.  But….it also didn’t take me long to figure out what happened to cause them to separate.  Logan never really understood why Millie sent him away, but I found it to be a bit predictable. I enjoyed the back and forth between Millie and Logan, as they reunited. It was not the prettiest reconciliation – not by a long shot! It was intense and powerful, with lots of anger and hurt being poured out, but in the end it was worth it.

Kristen Ashley has been building suspense for an explosive war between the Chaos MC and Benito Valenzuela over the arc of the Chaos series. In Walk Through Fire, however, Ashley really gears readers up for the coming of all-out war. I’m not saying there wasn’t violence and suspense in this novel, but I kept waiting for an epic climax to Walk Through Fire, only to discover that I had already read it. It was disappointing for me because I was geared up for so much more.

I adore Kristen Ashley’s writing style.  She writes interesting characters that I always seem to connect with, and she does a great job of keeping her stories fresh.  Ashley is one of the best at writing romantic suspense, but Walk Through Fire was only just okay for me.  At times, I felt this novel was a little too wordy with dialogue, which made it hard for me to stay focused on reading.  And I guess my biggest disappointment is that the story felt a bit anticlimactic.  Overall, Walk Through Fire is still a great addition to the Chaos series.  It’s classic Kristen Ashley, and there will, no doubt, be many people who absolutely love Walk Through Fire.  My rating for Walk Through Fire a 3.5 stars.

Author Bio:

kristen ashleyKristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
