What is it that attracts you to a book? Do you go for the cover? The back blurb? Do you read the sample that comes with the e-book? Do you pick up the paperback and read the first chapter? While J.T. Cheyanne’s new book has not just one but two hot guys on the incredible cover, and the back blurb hints at a romance with a mystery involved, believe me when I say you will be HOOKED by the opening chapter. I know my mouth dropped open and all I could think was damn, what a shocker! How can the author possibly take this story up a notch after an opening like that? With Collateral Damage, J.T. Cheyanne totally rocked it from start to finish.

Trevor Garrett is a big city cop relocated to small town Mississippi in a desperate attempt to escape the ghosts of his past, a past that leaves him fearful of being touched both physically and emotionally. He’s the new detective on the Rolling Fork police force, an outsider who’s trying to fit in but lay low at the same time so he can wrestle his demons and forget about his past in his own way. Logan Andrews is the hometown favorite son, as Trevor calls him. He’s come back to Rolling Fork to take care of his mother Stella, who’s suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Neither man is looking for anything more than a simple life: Trevor to do his job, Logan to take care of mom and the farm. Neither wants a relationship of any kind, for both have loved and lost to the extreme.

Yet in a small town dive bar, they see each other and like moths to the flame the attraction is full of heat, consequences be damned. Trevor’s aversion to being touched has no bearing where Logan is concerned; in fact, the army hero’s touch soothes and calms him in ways that nothing else can. Logan doesn’t think he’ll ever find true love after the loss of the man he tried to save so long ago yet he wants Trevor with a yearning so strong he’s willing to finally reveal his secret of being gay to the folks back home. But when the first murder victim is discovered, the fledgling romance is tested to the breaking point.

So much is at stake in this book: new love, trust issues, being gay in small town Mississippi, doing one’s job, battling nightmares, and ultimately overcoming all these things to discover what lies beneath the surface. In this book, love takes many forms: sexual discovery, hero worship, family ties, what’s expected, what’s frowned upon, the need to belong, and the need to be free. Both men know their responsibilities, but it’s the what-ifs that plague them and mold them into the men we first meet. When the murders start, Trevor must dig through the circumstantial evidence to find the killer. Both men come face to face with their pasts, and by doing so discover the meaning of true love, the kind of love that forgives the past and fights to forge a new connection so strong that nothing and no one will stand in its way.

Trevor and Logan’s chemistry is immediate and explosive. They are meant to be together yet are tested time and time again. Their story is full of heartbreak and hope, and thanks to an incredible cast of secondary characters, we learn so much about our heroes through the eyes of others. Logan’s mom is a true Southern lady, soft and sweet as the tea she serves, yet with a protective streak a mile wide that even her illness cannot diminish. Logan is blessed with friends who have to be the coolest couple in male/male literature. Carson and Dante stand by him through the ups and downs and I would love to know their back-story some day. Trevor’s former college roommate Noah and his beau Ashton only want the best for their struggling friend. Noah tries so hard and suffers for his efforts, yet proves to be the catalyst to figuring out the mystery. And the killer… well, let’s just say the author shows us good and evil all wrapped up in one tragic twist of fate.

This book shocked me, comforted me, made me laugh out loud and cry like a baby. I loved both men equally, loved how their story tugged at my heart and kept me on the edge of my seat. I will never forget Trevor’s vulnerability, or Logan’s swaggering confidence. Trevor the cop was exactly what he needed to be to match Logan’s Special Forces hero. Together they discovered the missing link, the love that was the only thing to prevent them both from becoming Collateral Damage.
