EXCERPT

I like the fact that you think I have strength, but it’s the whole…stronger than you think you are. And it’s not because it’s not true, it’s just the fact that everybody and their mother said that to me. Literally, and their mother.”

“Really?”

They were standing on her porch, the wind a little bit too cold for them to be doing so, but she wasn’t ready to go inside yet, and she didn’t know if she was going to invite him in either. “Everybody always assumed that I thought myself weak. At least that’s what the words sounded like to me when I thought about them. I know that’s not what they meant. I know that they were trying to tell me that I was doing well, and that despite everything happening to me, that I was making strides. But it just made me think that they thought I wouldn’t be able to handle it. And yet, I did. Because I had to. Because there was no other way to keep moving forward if I didn’t handle it.”

Ryan reached out and brushed his thumb across her cheek. “That’s not what I meant. And I’m sorry I made you think about it that way.”

“It’s not you.”

“It’s me?” he finished for her, and she shook her head.

“No, that’s not what I meant. People have a way of underestimating the power of their words. And I know they don’t mean anything by it. I know when faced with loss and especially faced with other people’s loss, they just don’t have the words. And sometimes that’s okay, to not have the words. I know it’s on me that I’m feeling that way, but because I heard that phrase so much, sometimes, it just annoys me a little.”

“Then I’ll try not to say it again. Even if I do think you’re pretty kickass.”

She smiled then. “Really?”

“Very kickass. Abby?”

She swallowed hard again. “What?” Her voice was breathy.

“Can I kiss you now?”

“I want you to. But only if you come inside.”

She hadn’t meant to say that, but as soon as she said the words, she knew they were right.

He looked at her then, his gaze dark and intense. And then he nodded.

Though she and Sebastian had been sharing a suite in California, the fact was, they lived in separate apartments in New York. No matter what she felt for him, London, her job, and her life awaited her. The sooner they got used to being apart the better.

“I’m tired,” she said. “I didn’t rest much on the flight, and we have to be up early tomorrow to meet with Ethan.”

His grin turned into a frown. “Why do I get the feeling you’re pulling away?”

She rubbed her hands over her arms and turned away, not wanting to face him. It was one thing to pull back, another to look him in the eye while doing it. Not when all she really wanted to do was throw herself into his arms. But she lived in reality. So here they were.

“Hey.” He grasped her and turned her around. “I have a question for you.”

“Okay…” she said warily.

“Why are you still here?”

“What?” She hadn’t anticipated that question.

“Why are you still here, in New York? You said you came for Ethan, but when he sent you away, you came with me. And now we’ve wrapped things up. We’re talking to Ethan in the morning. Is your flight home booked?” As he spoke, his hands on her forearms felt like a brand, a reminder that she belonged here, with him.

And she couldn’t let that sway her. Although she’d put work out of her mind, she had checked in with her bosses while she was away, assured them she was returning. She’d bought herself another week, that was it. They understood her leave of absence but wanted her back as soon as possible.

“I’ll take your silence to be a no,” Sebastian said, releasing her arms. “Which brings me back to why? Do you still want to be here? Or are you avoiding Mr. Perfectly Nice?”

She didn’t want to talk about any of this. She still had a week left, and in that time, Ethan would need her once he found out about Mandy’s cheating. Or was that just an excuse? Because she wasn’t ready to leave Sebastian, her conscience asked her.

She glared at him. “Why are you pushing me so hard just because I said I was tired?” she asked, more annoyed with herself but taking it out on him.

“Because of what we shared in California. Because of what we feel for each other, even if you’re not ready to admit it. And because I want to know.”

Read an excerpt from ASHES TO INK:

She pulled into Ryan’s driveway, right next to his car, and let out a breath. She’d been right. He was home.

She didn’t want to say that he was going to pay for leaving her like that, but it would be pretty damn close. Anger surged through her veins. She wasn’t mad at Ryan, she was angry that he’d given up. But his life had been dealt another blow, and he had turned around and done the same to her.

Well, that just wouldn’t stand.

She slammed the car door and made her way to Ryan’s front door. She rang the doorbell, once, twice, then three times, her hands shaking as she did.

Maybe the adrenaline from what had happened at the store was finally wearing off and she was starting to freak out. Well, she could do that later. First, she needed to make sure that Ryan understood exactly what was going on.

Because there was no way she’d let it end like this.

It was going to end on her terms or his. Their terms.

Not Michael’s.

She was about to ring the doorbell again when Ryan opened the door, his eyes wide, a closed beer bottle in his hand, and his shirt unbuttoned.

It was very hard to concentrate on being angry with him and the entire situation when all she could do was stare at his chest.

His very sexy chest.

A chest with the perfect amount of hair that made her want to growl, and ink everywhere there wasn’t hair.

She really, really wanted to touch that chest.

But first, she needed to let her anger out.

“Can I come in?” she asked as she pushed her way into the house.

She wasn’t usually this forward. In fact, she was usually only this way with her business. Except for when she had been in bed with Ryan. Then, she had been just as forward as he was. And it had been fun. Good. Neither of them fighting for control but pushing each other to go further. To fly over the edge as they came.

That had been fun.

But her standing up for herself like this? She wasn’t really good at it.

But she’d be damned if she let what had happened earlier change and ruin everything.

Ryan closed the door behind her and then turned around on his heel. “I guess you can just come in.”

“Thanks. We need to talk.”

He pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a breath. “I don’t want to hurt you, Abby, but you need to go.”

She ignored the little clutch in her belly at his words. She would let him off the hook this time and not get too angry. She wouldn’t lash out at him for pushing her away. She understood the desire, the need. She had done enough of that when she lost Max. But she wasn’t about to walk away just then.

“No.”

Excerpt:

“Gemma!”

She glanced in the direction that her dog had run. She hated storms. Her parents and Kyle knew that. Why hadn’t they helped her? Anger seethed within her. They hadn’t helped because they wanted to leave Daisy behind.

Well, Daisy was hers, and if she had to leave her friends and her home, she wasn’t leaving her dog.

“Gemma!”

She ignored both her parents, who were now shouting her name as she raced after Daisy. If she had to carry the forty-pound dog to the boat, then that’s what she’d do. Just as soon as she found Daisy.

Another flash of lightning bathed the land in light, giving her just a glimpse of the dog as she headed toward the house. Gemma ran as fast as her seven-year-old legs would carry her. She reached the house and Daisy.

“Hey, girl,” she said to the terrified dog. “It’s going to be all right.”

It took her four tries before she was able to lift the dog. She shook badly, but at least she wasn’t trying to get free. Gemma knew her parents were going to be furious with her. She didn’t know why they were sneaking away in the middle of the night in a storm, but the fear in her father’s voice and her mother’s face let her know that the questions would have to wait.

In less than two hours, they had packed up all they could and put it on the boat her father owned. She’d asked where they were headed, but her parents hadn’t answered and her brother had shot her an irritated look.

Once she got on the boat with Daisy, she hoped someone would tell her something. She hated not knowing what was going on. Kyle didn’t care. He always said that their parents would tell them when they needed to know.

Gemma stumbled and fell to her knees. She pitched forward so that she had to release Daisy in order to catch herself, but she managed to keep a tight hold of the leash and pull the dog back to her. Daisy seemed to like being held, so she didn’t put up a fight.

“I’m coming!” Gemma shouted, hoping her family could hear her.

She couldn’t see the dock through the driving rain and dark. Which was odd. There was supposed to be a light on the dock. She knew the way to the water, so she hadn’t gone the wrong way. But…why wasn’t the light on?

EXCERPT:

I take a moment to add up the facts, only the facts.

Lulu is here.

She’s living in New York.

I’m living in New York.

I’m about to add in one more fact, but I can’t in good conscience go there.

Besides, my heart is pounding too fast.

It’s from the incident, I tell myself.

It’s from the adrenaline rush.

It’s not from feelings.

I don’t feel a thing.

I leave the men’s room, take a drink from the water fountain, and wipe my hand across my mouth.

When I look up, she’s there.

With outstretched arms, she spins in a circle, waiting for an appraisal of her new outfit.

Her new, jaw-dropping, sexy-as-sin, might-as-well-throw-in-the-towel-and-raise-the-white-flag-of-surrender outfit.

What the hell was I thinking?

I clearly wasn’t using my brain at all. Because she’s even more alluring in this garb.

She’s only wearing the chef jacket and heels.

“Are you…?” I gesture to the outfit, the end of my words making my meaning clear? Are you naked under that?

She rolls her eyes. “Please. I have on my alpaca panties.”

“Alpaca panties?”

Her eyes twinkle. “I couldn’t resist. There was a sale on cute animal print undies with faces, you know, right here.” She gestures to her pelvis. “A six pack of giraffes, zebras, dolphins, and llamas too.” She casts her eyes down. “Wait. I have on the llama ones. I always get them confused.”

“Alpacas have shorter ears. Llama ears are banana length.”

She snaps her fingers. “Yes. Exactly. I’m wearing the big-eared animal undies, so it’s totally fine.”

Great. Now I’m thinking of her in underwear. In fucking llama underwear. Precisely the visual I’ve assembled way too many times without help, thank you very much. Minus the llamas, of course.

She tugs at the hem of the jacket, revealing the bare flesh of her thigh.

Lulu.” It comes out like a warning.

She laughs at me. “Relax. I’m tiny; this jacket is huge. It’s like a short dress on me.”

“A very short dress.”

“I can handle a short dress. I’ve worn shorter.”

“Shorter as in ass-cheek length, Lulu?”

Her eyebrows wiggle. Her eyes—green and not so green—sparkle. “Yes. I’ve worn ass-cheek length, Leo. But I’m still decent. And you’re still my hero.”

She leans closer, rises on tippy toes, and moves her lips close, closer, closest. She dusts those lips across my cheek, and it’s like she’s an arsonist.

In one swift move, I’m on fire.

“Max?”

Her voice was even more hoarse than his, and he leaned down, doing the only thing he could think of. He brushed his lips against her forehead. “Don’t speak. Let me get you some water for your throat.”

Her hands tightened on his shirt, and he froze.

“Or I can call my cousin in to help.”

She just blinked at him, and the bond between them flared. He couldn’t feel what she was feeling, their connection was far too new for that, and he didn’t know what kind of bond they would share anyway. But the fact that her eyes widened told him that she felt the difference, as well.

That was something they would have to work on. Somehow.

Walker walked in, his pleasant Healer face on, even though Max knew that his cousin was worried about them both. Hell, the whole Pack was worried with war on the mind, and Blade’s announcement about being Supreme Alpha—whatever that meant—far too new for comfort.

“You’re awake. That’s good. Let me get you some water to help your throat.” He tapped his ear as Cheyenne gave Max and then Walker a weird look. “Wolf hearing. I was already on my way in when Max offered to call for me. Why don’t you stay in bed, Max? You’re keeping her heart rate down.” He paused, looking at Cheyenne. “Unless you’d rather him leave the room. It’s all up to you, Cheyenne.”

She shook her head, and Max frowned, a sense of disappointment washing over him even though he tried to ignore the cause of it. Sure, they might be mated, but neither of them had made the choice to do so. So the idea that he was sad that his mate was rejecting him shouldn’t hurt. They weren’t really mates. Or, maybe they were, but they didn’t know each other enough for the pain to make sense.

And maybe Max needed time to breathe because he was thinking himself into circles.

“I…I’m fine.” Max let out a low growl at the sound of the pain in her voice, and she froze in his hold, her hand still resting on his chest.

“Sorry. Didn’t mean to startle you.”

She shook her head, then took a sip of the water Walker handed Max. She licked her lips, and Max did his best not to look at those lips. It was his wolf and the mating bond making him act this way, it couldn’t be anything else. Not when they were in this position because of something out of their control. She hadn’t had a choice in the matter and that meant there would be no acting on any urge.

Ever.

“It was the first time I felt a growl.”

He nodded, understanding. “Different for you then?”

She nodded. “You could say that.” She coughed, and he gave her more water, careful that she didn’t spill. “I need to tell you what happened…though I don’t know everything.”

Cheyenne looked over at Walker, then back at Max. “There’s something you need to know.”

Max had a feeling none of them were going to like what she had to say.

At the stadium’s
concession stand, I took a tall stool, putting Georgina and I at eye level
since she stood. “So, why didn’t you kiss François?” I asked. “Bad breath?”
She gasped
into her hand. “My breath is fine.”
“I meant
his. I’m sure yours is pure relish on a hotdog.”
She made a
face. “Gross.”
“I happen
to love relish,” I said. “But does François?”
Each time I
said François with flourish, she
flinched. I didn’t care. Something about him bugged me—I just couldn’t put my
finger on it.
“We didn’t
kiss because you interrupted us,” she pointed out.
“So? If I
were in his position, and we both wanted that kiss, I wouldn’t let anyone stop
me.”
Frank and I are clicking,” she said,
scowling. “There was even mention of spending time at his summerhouse.”
“Hamptons?”
She coughed
into her fist. “Boca Raton.”
The idea of
Georgina spending a summer with him in Boca Raton was tragic enough that I
almost smiled. I got the sense she was playing up the date. If it was so great,
why wasn’t she sitting here with him? And why was I more relieved than smug
about that? “Meanwhile, Justin and I will be clamming in Montauk.”
“You two
should really just make it official and announce your love to the world.”
“But then I
wouldn’t get to flirt with pretty girls.”
“For
someone who pretends to have as much game as you,” she said, “I still haven’t
seen you successfully flirt with any
girls since I’ve known you.”
I smirked.
“How do you know I’m not flirting with you right now?”

He’s enjoyed the nearly two years on Gansett with his boisterous fun-loving family, but it’s time to get back to the life he put on hold when he came to the island for his cousin’s wedding—and never left. With renovations to the Wayfarer, the family’s latest business endeavor, all but completed and the grand opening slated for Memorial Day weekend, the time is right to make a move. Chloe Dennis, owner of the Curl Up and Dye Salon, is about to close the shop after another ordinary day when Finn McCarthy walks in and turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. Holy hotness! How has she never met the youngest of the McCarthys, and now that she has met him, why is it that she runs into him everywhere she goes?

Despite the undeniable sizzle of attraction between Finn and Chloe, she is dealing with life-changing news that makes her reluctant to get involved with anyone, let alone a man who plans to leave the island for good in two short weeks. Finn can’t understand why he reacts to Chloe the way he does or why she won’t give him a chance to see what they could be. When she makes it clear that it’s not going to happen between them, what else can he do but go forward with his plan to pack up and leave at the end of the month? Unless the push-pull of undeniable desire makes them forget the many reasons why this could be a bad idea…

Gansett Island, Book 20
By: Marie Force

What in the name of hell is on your head?

Arriving to work slightly hungover and in bad need of coffee, Finn McCarthy ignored the question from his brother, Riley. Finn had forgotten to buy coffeeagainand had gone without this morning. Living alone sucked. Before his dad and Riley moved out, one of them had bought the coffee. Now he had to do it, and he never remembered it until he woke up late and realized hed forgotten. Again.

Riley wasnt giving up. Hello?

What is what?Finn choked back a yawn and tried to remember if hed brushed his teeth before he left the house. He had, hadnt he?

Riley stepped closer to him, boasting the freshly fucked look that had made Finn want to stab him more than once in the months since his brother moved in with Nikki. That.Riley pointed to the top of Finns head. What is that?

Finn had no idea what he was talking about until he reached up and encountered the lump of hair hed secured with a rubber band to keep it out of his face.

Their cousin Shane joined them. Its a man bun, and it looks ridiculous.

Riley, that asshole, busted up laughing. What the hell is a man bun?

That.Shane pointed to Finns head. Is a man bun. Theyre all the rage.

Riley couldnt stop laughing. He laughed so hard, he howled, while Finn prayed that his cousin Mac would bring coffee the way he did most days.

Thankfully, Mac walked into the Wayfarer a minute later with his business partner, Luke Harris, right behind him. And was that a tray of coffee Mac was carrying? Yes! “Whats so funny?

Finn has a man bun,Shane said.

And it looks ridiculous,Riley added.

Finn stole one of the coffees and took a big sip. Ahhh, pure bliss. Theres nowhere to get it cut out here.

Go see Chloe at the Curl Up and Dye,Mac said.

I dont get my hair cut in salons,Finn said disdainfully. I go to barber shops, and there isnt one on this island.

The way I see it,Riley said, if its a choice between a man bun or a salon, Im choosing the salon every time.

The way I see it,Finn said, no one asked you.

Wait till Dad, Uncle Mac and Uncle Frank see the man bun.Riley started laughing again. I gotta get a picture so we can show them in case they miss it.The bastard whipped his phone out and had the picture before Finn could react or turn away. That picture would haunt him for the rest of his life.

Maybe the guys were righta salon was preferable to putting up with this bullshit. His hair had gotten so long, it was either restrain it or wear a hat to keep it out of his face. Hats annoyed him when he was working, so hed grabbed a rubber band to contain it without a thought to what it might look like. Apparently, that had been a mistake.

Today, they were finishing up the shingling on the exterior of the Wayfarer, which was due to open in a couple of weeks. They were on track to meet the aggressive deadline Mac had set for the project and had turned the interior over to Nikki, the general manager. She and the team shed hired over the last few months would be loading in furniture this week, setting up hotel rooms and the dining room, hanging wall art and making finishing touches ahead of the grand opening on Memorial Day weekend.

On Saturday of that weekend, the Wayfarer would host its first major eventthe wedding reception of Shane and his fiancée, Katie Lawry. Theyd joked that they were the guinea pigs to test out whether the McCarthy familys latest Gansett Island business venture was ready for prime time. The day after the wedding, Finns famous cousin Evan McCarthy would headline the outdoor stage at the grand opening to the public.

So far, the Wayfarer was a huge hit, with Nikki reporting that the hotel was sold out for the summer and ten other weddings were already booked. That was what they wanted to hear. Each family member had a stake in the businesssome bigger than othersbut everyone had put something into his uncle Big Macs latest venture so they could all be owners. Finn was proud of the work theyd done to bring the old place back to life and even prouder of being part of something the family had done together.

Before going outside to get to work, Finn slathered sunscreen all over his face, neck and arms, gathered his nail gun and a ladder and followed the others to the scaffolding that was set up on the north side of the huge building theyd spent the winter renovating. Theyd done a damned good job, if he said so himself.

With the end in sight, Finn was making plans to move to the mainland after almost two years on Gansett Island. Itd been fun to hang with the family for a couple of years, to see his father and brother fall in love with women Finn liked and respected and to be part of Macs construction company. But it was time to get back to his real life, and that wasnt going to happen on a tiny island located off the southern coast of mainland Rhode Island.

He looked forward to skiing in the winter, driving the vintage Mustang he kept garaged at home and spending time with the friends hed left behind. Not to mention taking his career to the next level with the large construction company hed worked for in Stamford, Connecticut. There, hed put his degree in civil engineering to good use. Here, he was banging nails. Not that he didnt enjoy the work, but he hadnt spent four excruciating years in college to end up a glorified carpenter.

Missyor Melissa as she preferred to be called these dayshis on-again-off-again girlfriend at home, was threatening to come fetch him if he wasnt home by June, and he would save her the trip to Gansett by heading home right after the grand opening. After going round and round in his mind about how he felt about her during the time hed been gone, he was actually looking forward to seeing her. Despite the tumultuous aspects of their five-year relationship, theyd had a lot of fun together, most of the time anyway. Since theyd been broken up during the time he was gone, hed indulged in a few one-night stands here and there, but nothing of any consequence.

It was definitely time to go home and figure out whether they had what it took to go the distance together. His dad and Riley said absolutely not. Theyd never liked Missy for him, but Finn was determined to make up his own mind about her after seeing what remained after the long time apart.

He would miss his brother, father, aunt, uncles and cousins, and he would really miss working with Riley, Mac, Shane and Luke. Hed miss the family gatherings, the fishing trips Big Mac liked to organize and the time with his favorite men in the world. Hed miss Rileys girlfriend, Nikki, whom he called Nicholas while she called him Finnbar. The three of them had spent a lot of time together over the winter, and shed become a good friend to him.

He liked being able to regularly see his cousins Janey and Laura and their kids, as well as Macs brood and now Adams little guy, Liam, too. Macs wife, Maddie, was expecting another baby, and hed heard rumblings that his cousin Grants wife, Stephanie, might be pregnant, too. In addition, his cousin Mallory and her fiancé, Quinn, were talking about tying the knot at some point this summer.

Life on Gansett was rarely boring with the McCarthy family and their friends around to keep things interesting. It wasnt like Finn was dying to get out of there, especially with the summer coming. That was the best time of year to be on the island. But hed promised himself over the winter that once the Wayfarer was finished, hed make a move.

The Wayfarer was almost done, and the lease at the house was up at the end of the month. It seemed like the universe was conspiring to tell him it was time to get back to reality.

Nikki had offered him the garage apartment at Eastward Look, her familys home, if he wanted it. He was tempted to stay for the summer, but that would only prolong the inevitable.

No, he was going home at the end of the month. Tonight, hed text his old boss in Stamford to let him know hed be available in June, and hed touch base with Missy, too. As he applied the nail gun to a row of shingles, he felt a sense of calm come over him. For so many months, the stay-or-go tug-of-war had raged in his mind while his family had pressured him to stay with them. Hed be the only member of the McCarthy family not living on Gansett, and while it was tempting to give in to the pressure from his family, he had goals and aspirations that couldnt be achieved on the island.

Someday, hed like to own his own company the way Mac did. Finn considered self-employment the holy grail, accountable to no one but yourself and your employees. Mac worked his ass off, but it seemed nice to be the boss. Finn thought he would like thatsomeday in the far-off future that would be much farther off if he stayed here than it would be if he went home to Connecticut.

The workday dragged. Shingling was boring, monotonous work that gave him too much time to think. He wanted out of his own thoughts for a while. Whatre you guys doing tonight?he asked Riley as they helped the others clean up and shut down for the day.

Not sure yet. Nik might be working late again.

I want to go out.

Id be up for that. What do you feel like doing?

Drinking, raising hell, the usual.

Riley smiled. Thats your usual. Not mine anymore.

Oh, shut up. Youre not married yet.

Nope, but Id like to be. Sooner rather than later.

Finn stopped and took a closer look at his brother. Youre serious.

Dead serious. In fact, I was going to ask if youd help me pick out a ring.

Wow. This is huge. While Finn was thrilled for his brother and Nikki, he couldnt ignore the nagging ache that came with losing his best friend. As soon as he had that thought, he felt stupid. Riley was getting married, not dying, for Christs sake.

You okay?Riley gave him an odd look that had Finn pulling himself together.

Im happy for you, Ri. Nicholas is a great girl.

I love her.

The stark simplicity of his brothers statement stayed with Finn on the ride home. Riley had promised to text him after he caught up with Nikki about the plans for the evening. I love her. He puzzled over his brothers heartfelt words while showering, and then while drinking a beer and eating his favorite after-work snack of corn chips and Cheez Whiz. I love her.

What must it be like to be so certain?

Had he ever said that about any woman, even Missy? Nope, and he wasnt sure whether what hed felt for Missy was love or lust or some weird combination of the two. One thing he knew for certainhe hadnt had with her what Riley had with Nikki. The realization made him uneasy as he ran fingers through his unruly mop of hair, recalling that hed planned to get a haircut.

He searched for the Curl Up and Dye salons number on his phone and put through a call.

A female voice answered. Curl Up and Dye.

Hi there. What time do you close tonight?

Seven.

Can you take a walk-in?

If you get here soon.

Ill be right over.

Whats your name?

Finn McCarthy.

Got it. See you soon.

He downed the rest of the beer and put the Cheez Whiz in the fridge next to the beer that was the only other thing in there. The meager contents of his fridge were further proof that he needed to get a life.

Since the salon was in town, he decided to walk rather than drive. As the season started to pick up steam with Gansett Island Race Week underway, parking in town could be hard to come by. A block from the salon, he noticed the dark purple paint and the sign with the catchy name painted in gold leaf. Two smiling, laughing women were leaving as he reached the door, and he held it for them.

One of them gave him the once-over as she went by. Thank you.

My pleasure. She was old enough to be his mother.

Inside the salon, the first thing he noticed was the rich scent of shampoo and the décor that consisted of golden wood floors, black leather chairs, chrome accents and mirrors all over the place.

Ill be right out.The same distinctive voice hed spoken to on the phone.

Take your time.Finn looked around at the glass shelves of products that promised shine, body, vibrancy and a variety of other things he never gave much thought to.

You dont need that.

Finn looked up from the bottle he was studying to find the sexiest woman hed ever laid eyes on looking at him in amusement. Shoulder-length dark hair streaked with dark purple, ears pierced multiple times each, her left arm boasting a colorful sleeve tattoo, a sparkling diamond stud in her nose and violet eyes that riveted him. Hed never seen eyes that color before. She wore a black sleeveless top over black skinny jeans that clung to curves that made his mouth go dry.

You must be Finn?

Ah, yeah. Thats me.He put the bottle on the shelf and managed to knock two others to the floor. As he bent to retrieve them, his head connected with hers in a painful smack that made him see stars. Fucking hell, that hurt! When he looked up, he found her rubbing the side of her head.

Ow.

Sorry about that.He picked up the bottles and returned them to the shelf.

Youve got a hard head. Her face flushed when she realized the double meaning behind her words.

A surge of heat to his groin caught him by surprise. Itd been so long since any woman had interested him, and hed nearly given this one a concussion. May I please request a do-over of the last minute? He held out his hand. Im Finn McCarthy.

She eyed his hand before she reached out to take it. Chloe Dennis.

The brush of her skin against his made his entire system go haywire. What the hell was that about? Stunned and unnerved by his reaction to her, he quickly retrieved his hand. Do you have time for a quick haircut?

Sure, but with all that hair, its not going to be quick.

I can come back another time.

No, its fine. She gestured to one of three black chairs positioned in front of a row of mirrors. Have a seat.

Finn headed for the chair she pointed to and sat, feeling out of sorts and off his game after the head bump. He wasnt usually so clumsy or awkward around women, but hed rarely encountered one like Chloe.

Goddess was the word that came to mind. She projected a cool, aloof aura of self-confidence, which he found incredibly sexy. He stared at her in the mirror as she approached the chair, and when she ran her fingers through his hair, he felt her touch in every corner of his body. Even the bottoms of his feet tingled with awareness.

Holy crap.

Whatre you thinking?

He didnt dare answer that question.

Short or on the longer side?

God, she was talking about his hair, and his imagination had run away with him.

Um, short enough that its not in my face at work, but not super short.

What do you do for work?

Construction for my cousin Mac.

Ahh, gotcha. Hes insane. In the best way, of course.

Finn laughed. That he is. He keeps us well entertained.Finn would miss the older cousin hed always looked up to. The ten years between them had all but disappeared in the time Finn had lived on Gansett Island. These days, Mac treated him more like a peer than a pesky baby cousin. Finn had learned a lot from Mac, both professionally and personally.

You McCarthy men sure were blessed with great hair.

Watching her run her fingers through his hair was one of the most erotic things Finn had ever experienced.

I cut your dad, your uncles, your cousins. You guys could be shampoo models.

Finn cleared a huge lump from his throat. You think so?

She met his gaze in the mirror. I really do.

Was it his imagination or did she look at him much longer than necessary? No, definitely not his imagination. He shifted in the seat, hoping she wouldnt notice his embarrassing reaction to her. The movement startled her, and she looked away.

Nothing like this had ever happened in a barber shop.

Blurb:

From the time I was a kid, I knew I wanted a job helping people. After serving in the Rifles regiment of the British Army, I focused my civilian career on becoming a bodyguard to the rich and famous. For a Cockney Brit, I never imagined a twist of fate landing me a position in the United States Secret Service and protecting the President’s son. But then my boss made an unexpected request: leave my current placement to move in with his only daughter to give an added layer of protection against the threats she had been receiving. I’d never lived with a woman who was off-limits to me. It wasn’t just that Caroline had a boyfriend. She was my best friend’s sister, and my boss’s daughter. But the longer we’re in such close quarters together, the greater the temptation grows, but I know I’ll lose everything if I pursue her.

Growing up as the only girl and with two overbearing older brothers, I’m no stranger to being overprotected. Just as I finished up college and prepared to truly dip my toes into the adult world, my father was elected President of the United States, which added a whole new level of protection with the Secret Service team attached to me. Just when I thought I couldn’t possibly be more smothered, I began receiving threats, and my family decided it wasn’t enough to just have an agent living down the hall from me. Nope, I was to have one move in with me, and not just any agent, but Ty Frasier—my brother, Barrett’s best friend, and my brother, Ty’s, head agent. While most women would enjoy living with a sexy, buff Brit, having a roommate threw a wrench into all my plans. Especially when I began noticing Ty was so much more than a hot guy.

Excerpt:

After we spent a considerable amount of time perusing the aisles of the Piggly Wiggly, Caroline was finally finished, and we made our way to the checkout. In true small town fashion, she struck up a conversation with the middle-aged cashier. While she appeared utterly charming, I probably came off as an ass because I kept looking around and narrowing my eyes at anyone who might look suspicious. Especially the male middle-aged cashier who seemed utterly enthralled by Caroline.

At the sight of us coming out the mechanized doors, Stuart began easing the SUV closer to our place on the curb. After popping the hatch, Caroline wheeled the cart over to the back of the SUV. Just as I was about to start helping her with the bags, I heard a shout behind me. “Hey! Come back here.”

Whirling around, I saw a man waving wildly at Caroline. “Fuck! Assailant!” Stuart shouted.

I shoved myself between the man and Caroline, shielding her from him. Grabbing her by the waist, I hoisted her up and threw her in the back of the SUV. “Omph!” she cried as her body bounced on the carpeting of the hatch. After slamming the door, I stepped back just as Stuart screeched away from the curb.

Now that I knew Caroline was safe, I turned my attention back to the man. Hurling myself at him, I took him down to the curb. “What are you doing?” he demanded.

“Stay down. I’m calling the police.”

“The police? But what did I do?”

“You’ve been harassing the President’s daughter.”

“I just came out to give her the coupons she forgot.”

“What?”

He nodded. “Look in my right hand.”

After rocking back on my knees, I grabbed his arm and pried the contents out of his hand. Once I unraveled it, I grimaced. “Son of a bitch.”

I had completely and utterly misread the situation. Speaking into my microphone, I said, “Stuart, it’s a false alarm.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” he blared into my ear.

“No, I’m not.”

“We’re headed back.”

“Roger.”

I figured then it was past time for me to get off the man. I rose to my feet before reaching down to help him up. I brushed off his white shirt I had accidentally dirtied when I knocked him to the ground. Upon closer inspection, I saw the nametag on his shirt. “Sheldon, I’m terribly sorry for my actions.”

He narrowed his brown eyes at me. “I think it’s me who needs to be calling the police.”

“That won’t be necessary.” Reaching into my pocket, I fished out my badge. As I flashed it at him, I said, “Agent Fraser with the U.S. Secret Service.”

His eyes bulged before he gasped. “Wait, that was President Callahan’s daughter?”

“Yes, sir, it was. I hope you can understand that we take the safety of the president’s children very seriously, and upon first reflection, it appeared you might’ve been preparing to harm Ms. Callahan.”

“Oh, no. I would never want to do that. I voted for her dad. Never thought I’d vote for an Independent, but he won me over.”

“I’m happy to hear that, sir. I certainly hope this unfortunate incident won’t in anyway skew your views on him.”

He waved a hand dismissively at me. “No, no. I understand. More than that, I can’t wait to go home and tell my wife that Caroline Callahan came into my store today.”

For my sake, I hoped he left out the part where a Secret Service agent mowed him down because he thought Piggly Wiggly coupons were a weapon. Once the other agents found out about this, I was going to catch hell in the form of their constant ribbing. At least Stuart would be going down with me. He’d made the assumption to start with.

After Stuart drove up, he made quick work of putting the SUV in park and opening the hatch. I hopped off the curb and went over to the back. Caroline sat with her knees pulled against her chest. When she pursed her lips at me, I held up my hands. “I’m sorry. It was a false alarm.”

“That’s what Stuart said.”

“We can never be too careful.”

An amused look twinkled in her blue eyes. “Apparently not when we find grocery cashiers a threat to my safety.”

“He appeared to have a weapon in his hand, and he was shouting at you,” I argued.

“I believe the weapon turned out to be coupons.”

Man, she was really on my dick about this one. Shit. I should never think of Caroline on my dick in any form or fashion. It was just too wrong. “Yes, the weapon turned out to be your coupons.”

“Right.”

I extended my hand to her. “Come on and get out, so we can load the groceries up and get the hell out of here.”

After I helped Caroline slide out of the back, she started helping me load the bags. “Should I go inside and offer an autograph to smooth things over? This is the closest grocery store to the apartment, so I’d hate to not ever be able to come here again because you clothes-lined a guy.”

About the Author

Katie Ashley is a New York Times, USA Today, and Amazon Best-Selling author of both Indie and Traditionally published books. She lives outside of Atlanta, Georgia with her daughter, Olivia, and her spoiled mutt, Duke. She has a slight obsession with Pinterest, The Golden Girls, Shakespeare, Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Scooby-Doo.

With a BA in English, a BS in Secondary English Education, and a Masters in Adolescent English Education, she spent eleven years teaching both middle and high school English, as well as a few adjunct college English classes. As of January 2013, she hung up her red pen and expo markers to become a full-time writer. Each and every day she counts her blessings to be able to do her dream job.

Although her roots are firmly planted in the red Georgia clay, she loves traveling the country and world to meet readers and hang out with fellow authors. When she’s not writing or chasing down her toddler, you might find her watching reruns of The Golden Girls, reading historical biographies, along with romance novels, or spending way too much time on Facebook.
