Rosemary Beach Series – Book 13

Synopsis

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next sizzling novel in the Rosemary Beach series, featuring well-known playboy and Blaire’s half brother, Captain.

The look on Rose’s face had screamed that she was hiding something. Hell, she’d practically run away from me. There was something to that. I knew there was…

After ten years in the employ of a mysterious crime boss, River “Captain” Kipling is ready to leave his sordid past—and his cover occupation as an upscale restaurateur—behind him. The only thing standing in the way of his “retirement” is his commitment to launch a new restaurant in the resort town of Rosemary Beach. With his sister, Blaire, nearby, Captain can delay his dream of running a humble bar on the waterfront, but the unwanted attentions of his head server, Elle, have him itching to get out.

Until he notices Rose Henderson, the new server at the restaurant. All he knows about the pretty redhead with the cute glasses is that she’s a hardworking single mom from Oklahoma. But there’s something overly familiar about her laugh…something strange about the way she looks at Captain…

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of the Rosemary Beach Series by Abbi Glines.  I have read every book  in this series.  I was extremely excited to see Captain’s book was releasing. River “Captain” Kipling has been an enigma throughout the series.  His appearance in some of the previous books has left readers with a sense that this guy has a story to tell and it’s not going to be pretty.

The Best Goodbye by Abbi Glines is the big revelation of who Captain is and where he came from.  The were some surprising revelations and a very complicated past.  Add that to his complicated dangerous career choices that he is trying to walk away from and the reader has quite a story to ingest.

I loved the concept of Captain’s story and his history with Rose.  I loved their past relationship and admired his dedication to that relationship.  But nine years have passed and he is not the same man.  Rose is not the same woman.  They had some serious issues but resolving them came too easy.  The reader didn’t get to experience the red hot chemistry, the cat and mouse dance that leads to explosive passion, and the hard earned resolution.  The entire back story and present relationship was too easy, a little too fast, and too easily won.  Captain’s dangerous history and present danger were flossed over and reached a predictable conclusion.  The other dynamic characters from the series were mostly absent from this book.  Blair made a couple of short appearances and Mase made one very short appearance.  These characters and their relationship with the other characters, their sense of family & friendship, was absent.  To me this is part of the dynamics that makes this series so successful and very much loved by the readers.

Overall Captain had a good story but it was rushed.  I was disappointed because I wanted to love him and Rose as much as the other Rosemary Beach characters.

About FORGETTING AUGUST

Synopsis

She can forgive, but can she forget?

Some days, Everly still thinks she sees him. In the food court at the mall, or in a car speeding past as the light changes. It only lasts a second, but when it happens, she slips back to a time when she was ruled-and nearly ruined-by August Kincaid. And it doesn’t matter that she’s moved on, that she’s about to marry another man. In those moments the only thing she can do to regain control is take a deep breath and remind herself that August can’t hurt her-because he’s in a coma. Except that he’s not anymore.

August is awake. With no memories, he sets out to solve the mystery of his lost life. He unearths a photograph of a beautiful redhead named Everly and knows instinctively that she’s the key. But when he finds her, the August she describes is more monster than man.

Tortured by the thought of having hurt her, August wants only to become the man Everly deserves. As the new August emerges, Everly glimpses the person she first fell in love with. 5StarMichel’s Review

If you are looking for an emotional and angsty book to sink your teeth into … Forgetting August by J. L. Berg is the book to open.

Forgetting August came as a delightful surprise.  I figured this book would be predictable and follow the romance novel formula.  It did just the opposite and left the readers with a jaw dropping cliffhanger and sense of hopelessness where this couple is concerned.

The book begins with August waking up in the hospital with no memories at all.  His confusion is heartbreaking.  Finding a picture of a beautiful woman in his wallet leaves him hopeful until he starts looking for his past.  It turns out that he wasn’t a nice guy.  Nobody has missed him the past two years.  The one person he should be connected to hates him and is hostile towards his recovery.  As he tries to dig deep to find himself he gets further lost because the person he was is not the person he is feeling he is.  It’s confusing and deceptive.  It indicates that he may have been an abusive man, not physically but mentally.  At the same time the reader gets the impression that there is more to the story.  That he may have made some very bad life choices and it made him live with extreme fear.  He let his greed dictate and change his happy life.  His greed not only destroyed him but also the one person he loved more than anything.  She became a possession rather than a partner.

Everly’s worst fears have become a reality.  August has awakened from his two year coma.  Two years ago she gained her freedom.  She escaped her horrific life with the man she thought she loved.  She has moved on, made a new life, and wants nothing to do with the past.  She is the key to helping him regain his memories.  Although she hates him, she has some compassion for him.  She tries to help him the best she can without becoming involved with his life once again.

When some memories surface and a big revelation is made…. cliffhanger!  It was shocking and I didn’t see that one coming.  I can’t wait to read the sequel to find out if August has truly changed or if everything Everly thought he was is even more frightening.

Read Forgetting August by J. L. Berg. It is guaranteed to keep you glued to the pages.

1,001 Dark Nights is proud to present…The Liliana Hart & Friends – MacKenzie Family Project!

A Message from Liliana Hart:

Dear Readers,

I’m thrilled to be able to introduce the MacKenzie Family World to you. I asked five of my favorite authors to create their own characters and put them into the world you all know and love. These amazing authors revisited Surrender, Montana, and through their imagination you’ll get to meet new characters, while reuniting with some of your favorites.

These stories are hot, hot, hot—exactly what you’d expect from a MacKenzie story—and it was pure pleasure for me to read each and every one of them and see my world through someone else’s eyes. They definitely did the series justice, and I hope you discover five new authors to put on your auto-buy list.

Make sure you check out Troublemaker, a brand new, full-length MacKenzie novel written by me. And yes, you’ll get to see more glimpses of Shane before his book comes out next year.

So grab a glass of wine, pour a bubble bath, and prepare to Surrender.

Love Always,

Liliana Hart

Synopsis

The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in a spin-off series from the #1 New York Times bestselling author…

Paradise, blooded daughter of the king’s First Advisor, is ready to break free from the restrictive life of an aristocratic female. Her strategy? Join the Black Dagger Brotherhood’s training center program and learn to fight for herself, think for herself…be herself. It’s a good plan, until everything goes wrong. The schooling is unfathomably difficult, the other recruits feel more like enemies than allies, and it’s very clear that the Brother in charge, Butch O’Neal, a.k.a. the Dhestroyer, is having serious problems in his own life.

And that’s before she falls in love with a fellow classmate. Craeg, a common civilian, is nothing her father would ever want for her, but everything she could ask for in a male. As an act of violence threatens to tear apart the entire program, and the erotic pull between them grows irresistible, Paradise is tested in ways she never anticipated–and left wondering whether she’s strong enough to claim her own power…on the field, and off.

jr wardJessica Rowley Pell Bird was born on 1969 in Massachusetts, USA. She is the daughter of Maxine F. and W. Gillette Bird, Jr. She began writing as a child, penning her thoughts in diaries as well as inventing short stories. She read her first Harlequin Presents novel in a rose garden when she was in her teens. She was hooked immediately. By the time she went to college, she had boxes and boxes of Harlequins and Silhouettes. Every year, her mother would ask why all those books had to live in the house and Jess would reply that if even one of them disappeared she would know. (She’d catalogued them.)

Jess finished her first romance manuscript the summer before her freshman year of college. She attended Smith College and graduated with a double major in history and art history. She then received a law degree from Albany Law School. Shortly after that, she began working in the healthcare industry in Boston. She spent many years as one of the premier medical center’s Chief of Staff. While working as a lawyer in Boston, she completed two novels more and started a number of partials. In 2001, Bird married John Neville Blakemore III. Both her mother and her new husband kept telling her to send something in to an agent, a publisher, the Tooth Fairy, anyone. She thought they were nuts, but eventually got her nerve up and bought a lot of stamps. Since getting published, she has written contemporary romances as Jessica Bird and paranormal romances as J. R. Ward. She has been a Rita Award finalist, received two Romantic Times Reviewer’s Choice nominations and has been a HOLT medallion finalist.

New England born and bred, Jess is surprised to find herself living south of the Mason Dixon line. (But that’s what happens when you marry a Southern gentleman.) She and her husband live with their golden retriever, who oversees her writing in a supervisory role.

By Audra North

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes / Kobo

Synopsis

She’s not at all what he expected. He’s just as sinfully sexy as she remembered. And together they’re about to heat up the track.

Grady Hart is the black sheep of his family. For years he’s managed the Hart Racing team, but while racing is in his blood, his real passion lies under the hood. Ready to start out on his own, all he needs to do is find a replacement for his old job. All her life Annabelle has tried to fit into the role of perfect daughter-and failed. Divorced, broke and living back home with her mother, she’s tired of trying to live up to her parents’ impossible standards. Taking on the position as crew chief for a successful racing team-and getting her hands dirty-is just what she’s looking for…but first she has to get past her old crush on her new boss. After all, it’s never smart to mix business with pleasure, or is it?

Tina’s Review

⭐ ⭐ Provided by Publisher in Exchange for an Honest Review ⭐ ⭐

Judging a Book by it’s Cover:
Bright, bold colors, young edgy couple.
Looking Deeper:
Third-person POV, novella length. Second book in series, but can stand alone.
Grady is passionate, but a bit low on self-confidence. Annabelle is learning to stand on her own two feet. Both crushed on one another during there teens without the other knowing. Now she’s back and they’re just as in lust. She gets hired on at Hart Racing, he’s branching out with Carbon Works.
Secondary characters mostly consist of the Hart crew and racing community that we’ve meet in book 1, however there are some additional characters included to create additional drama and conflict. Grady and Annabelle’s chemistry is rather smokin’ hot. Beware: Workplace Sex does occur! The dialogue and interaction are perfectly natural feeling. The plot is not bad, but was not as full and dynamic as I think it could have been – but given the length of the story, I’m pleased with what was packed in. The writing flowed smoothly. There were a few minor conflicts, but most were self-imposed or -inflicted. Problems were resolved in mediocre manners. There was some predictability, but not enough to ruin things. The conclusion was okay, but with all the hoopla throughout this installment around Kerri and Ranger’s wedding, I’d thought for sure we’d read a little about the wedding. It was a bit of a disappointment when it did not happen.
