Author Bio

10899986_1537995699804922_570479309709522933_oI was born in Seattle Washington, but soon moved to a small town North of there, which is where I grew up. I’m the oldest of five children, so it was a lively household, and reading became my way to block out the noise. I am an avid reader. I love every genre, but romance and happily ever afters have always been my favorite books. I remember in middle school my biology teacher taking a Rosemary Rogers book away from me; I didn’t understand why—she was certainly teaching me aspects of biology!

As I grew up, I would write stories to entertain myself and my younger siblings. I often wrote their book reports for them. My brothers were only one year apart in age. I wrote a report for the oldest his senior year, he turned it in and got a B+. The next year John turned in the same report to the same teacher and got an A-, the year after that the youngest turned it in to the same teacher and got an A. The teacher liked it better each time he read it!

I’ve worked in corporate America for most of my life, where a lot of creative writing takes place (and if you don’t believe me, you really don’t know corporate America). I blogged to all my employees when I spent six weeks in India—they considered me quite the smartass. My corporate life has allowed me to live in Washington, Texas, Belgium and California.

I have been with the same man for seventeen years. He was born and raised in Texas, and twelve years ago I whisked him, kicking and screaming, to Southern California. Luckily he loves me and wants to be where I am, but he’s still a Texan at heart (although he doesn’t miss Texas summers). I’m a very lucky woman who enjoys swimming, traveling, babysitting her nieces and nephews and doing lots of “research” with her husband for upcoming books.

After being such a fan of romance all my life, I was reading Sophie Oak’s Bliss and Siren in the City series last year, and they weren’t coming out fast enough. I started thinking about a place up in the Northwest, and characters started spinning in my head. Then came Chance. Once he was there, he demanded to be put down on paper. I don’t really write the stories. For real, the stories just come out of my fingers onto the computer screen. Half the time I’m surprised by what ends up being typed!

Chapter One

“Tell me where you came from.”

It always started this way.  First the question, then the excruciating pain as the electric paddles were held against her temples.  The smell of her burning flesh.  Then they would take the rubber bit from her mouth and ask another question.  Another question she couldn’t answer.

“How many of you are there?”

She prayed to all the saints her mother taught her that this time she would pass out.  It was the only thing to ever stop the questions.  Stop the pain.

“I don’t know!” she wailed, as the bit was shoved into her mouth. She squeezed her eyes so tight she saw stars before the shocking red flames took over her very being.

“Where did you come from?  Where are the rest of you now?”  They yanked the bit from her mouth, making her lip bleed.

“Just tell me what you want me to say…” her voice didn’t sound like her own.  For hours or months, she wasn’t sure how long she begged them to tell her what they wanted her to answer.  The paddles were again placed on her temples.  Fire exploded behind her eyes and her teeth actually tore into the rubber bit.

****

She wasn’t strapped down.  She stretched and it felt wonderful, until the pins and needles started.  Where was she?  She wanted to see if they noticed they forgot to buckle the straps. She tried to look around.  She couldn’t.  She was blind.  They’d blinded her, the shock therapy had blinded her.  Oh God.  She trembled in horror for long moments before realizing it was her eyelids, they were swollen shut.  She tried to touch them to make sure it was the only thing wrong but pain seared her arm.

Moving slowly to restore some circulation to her limbs, she realized she was lying on something soft.  Rolling just a little so she wasn’t lying on her arm, she fell on to a hard cement floor.  It hurt, it was cold, but at least she could move.  Trying to stand up, she used the cot as leverage, but her legs wouldn’t support her.

She crawled and bumped her head against a wall.  Using it as a guide she followed it around the small room with cement walls, basically a cell.  Mostly empty except for the cot and the toilet, there was a tray with something that felt and smelled like bread and cheese.  She wolfed down some of the food, but there wasn’t anything to drink.  Crawling over to the toilet she flushed it, then greedily drank handfuls of water.

“Good to see you’re back with us Kelly.”  She hadn’t heard any door open or anything else to indicate she wasn’t alone.

“Who are you?  What do you want from me?”  Cringing at the desperate edge in her voice, she clamped her lips tight.  God, how she wanted to beg for water that didn’t come from a toilet, for food, or a blanket, or to go home.

“Who are we?  You don’t get to ask the questions, we do.  We want to know who all of you are.  We know about you and the four others.  You all showed up twenty years ago.  Why did you come here?  Where did you come from?”  The woman’s voice was calm and soothing.  It was like they were having a polite conversation, but Kelly knew the horror awaiting her at the woman’s command.

“I told you, I don’t remember anything before waking up in Dad’s police car.”  Kelly’s voice was raspy from all the screams, but at least it was even.

“But Kelly, Mike Wachowski isn’t really your father now is he?”  Again the woman’s speech was calm and soothing.  “You appeared out of thin air twenty years ago and were adopted into his family, isn’t that right?”

It wasn’t a question, and Kelly didn’t reply, but suddenly realized what was coming next.  She’d forgotten.  This wasn’t the first time she’d woken up in this room and drank from the toilet bowl.  Doubted it was even the tenth time.  It had to be the shock treatments.  They were messing with her memory.  She didn’t remember when she’d been kidnapped, but it had to have been well over a month, oh God, could it have been a year?

She sat there, turning her head away from the direction of the voice.  She waited, and then heard more people entering the cell, knowing what came next.  Holding up her arms she didn’t have long to wait, they were there, grabbing and dragging her out.

****

“Noooooo-aaaahhhhh!”

“Shove the bit in again.  I don’t want her biting through her tongue.  Hopefully this new dosage will break down the damn barrier.”

Whatever chemicals they gave her burned as they made their way into her system.  She moaned around the rubber bit and struggled with the restraints as the paddles were placed against her temples.  Maybe they’d finally kill her and her suffering would end.

First black, then white, and then the red of fire and pain.  Coursing through her like molten fire, through every molecule, forcing her to lose control of her bodily functions.

The colors burst in front of her, yellows, purples, pinks and blues.  Ripping the head off one wildflower she pushed it against her nose and inhaled the fragrance, and then threw back her head and laughed.  The sun was up and warm against her bare shoulders.  Charging forward, she giggled as the flowers brushed legs, the soft grass squishy between her toes.  She soared over the log in her path, and then she saw him.

Noah was her best friend.  She knew he wanted to be alone, but he needed her.  Tiptoeing behind him, she jumped up to surprise him as he turned around.  He gave her a dark look but she smiled at him and flung her arms wide, watching as his face suffused with laughter.  He scooped her up and twirled her around.  He was nine and she was five, but their age difference didn’t matter, they were best friends.  Grabbing his silky black hair as he twirled her, she hugged his neck, and Kali was content.  Nothing was better in her world than loving Noah, he belonged to her.

“Don’t be sad anymore, Noah.”

“I’m not sad, Kali.”

“Don’t lie.”

“I’m leaving with the others.”  She’d known.  But she didn’t want him to leave.  “Kalani, you need to understand, let me show you.”  He touched their foreheads together.

“No, I don’t want to see.”

“Open up Kali, you need to see.  Let me show you.”

Kali relaxed and let him share the other universe needing their help.  He revealed everything.  So many things didn’t make sense, but the pain and suffering was easy to comprehend, and more, she could see what it was Noah and the others were supposed to do.  It was simple, they were to be themselves and just help a little.

He was right, he had to go, it was important.  Kali started to cry.  She knew it meant she would have to leave everything she loved, her Nana, the meadow, and everything else, because there was no way Noah was leaving without her.

Guest Post

Greetings from the hot and humid state of Oklahoma!  My name is Mia Dymond and I write sexy contemporary romance novels with a twist of sass. I currently have fourteen novels available on retailers including iBooks, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Amazon, and Smashwords.

My most recent release is Treasure Me, Book in the Alpha Four series.  Alpha Four is a tough, no-nonsense group of ex-Army Rangers with muscles of stone and hearts of gold.  Book one is the story of Lt. Dagan “Rebel” Caldwell and Sophie Graystone, a couple who clashes at every turn with the need for control.  I hope you’ll enjoy the rocky journey they travel to fall in love.  Please enjoy an excerpt:

Once Rebel held two steaming cups of coffee, he headed back to the table and sat beside her.  Much to his relief, she wasted no time in touching him.  She wrapped one hand around her cup, and wrapped the other around his forearm, her fingers drawing lazy circles against his skin.

“I’m curious,” she said as her fingers taunted the nerves beneath his skin, “how did you get your nickname?”

He chuckled low under his breath.  Curiosity was a good start.

“Curious, huh?”

She nodded.

“I’ve never been one to follow protocol.”

“In the Army?”

“In life.  I enlisted in an act of rebellion.”

“Is that a decision you regret?”

“Not in the least.  Thunder, Chaos, and Ace made it all worthwhile.”

“You guys are close.”

“Family.”

“I take it there are several stories behind those nicknames too.”

He nodded without elaboration.

“So,” she prompted, “tell me about your team.”

“Can’t do that.”

“Why?”

“Confidential.  I’d have to silence you if I told you and I’m not sure that’s possible.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I’m confident you’d find a way to challenge my methods.”

“You’d be disappointed if I didn’t.”

He snickered, aroused as hell by the fact that she didn’t hesitate before she fired right back at him.  No doubt, she’d challenge him alright and she was absolutely correct when she responded – disappointed didn’t begin to describe his feelings.

“Thunder assembled Alpha Four when he retired from the Army. It only took three phone calls to build a team.”

“The four of you are very loyal.”

He nodded.  “There’s just something about fighting evil that brings a team together.”

“Do you think about it often?”

He hesitated, weighing the decision to answer her.  He’d seen a whole lot of evil during his military tours, things that he’d never share with her.  Yet, thanks to Uncle Sam and Thunder, he’d learned to file it so far away that even memory couldn’t find it.

He glanced down at her fingers, still rubbing circles on his forearm and distracting him from answering her question.  Her soft, gentle touch caused the nerves under his skin to quiver with excitement.  What in the hell had she asked?

“Sophie?”

“Hmmm?”

“I can’t concentrate when you do that.”

Her brow furrowed.  “Do what?”

He glanced down at her fingers.  “That.  You’re driving me crazy.”

“Oh, really?”

Before he could stop himself, he nodded.  Oh. Hell. So much for never let them see you sweat.  He’d pretty much just handed her a whole locker of ammunition.

“Well, then.”  She blinked those deep, dark eyelashes several times as her fingers continued their assault.  “Perhaps you should answer my question.”

“No.”

“No?”

“I mean, no I don’t think about the evils in my past often.  Alpha Four gives me plenty to think about.”

“Are you in danger?”

“Not always.  Sometimes our assignments are as mundane as installing a security system.”

“Other times you put your life on the line for someone else.”

“Yes.”

“Like me.”

“Well, no one’s tried to kill you …. yet.”  He gave her hand a slight squeeze, buying a second of courage for his next comment.  “But I’d put my life on the line for you without a second thought.”

I hope you’ll enjoy Treasure Me!  Happy Reading!!!

5 Star Movie

Kelley’s Review

I was able to attend an early screening of The Fifty Shades of Grey movie last night and was quite pleased as to how the book that started my blogging career, was portrayed on the big screen.  As of this morning looking at the different news media sites including IMDB the movie is not getting the greatest of reviews so why would I give this movie a 5-star review?  If you read the book and loved the book you will enjoy the movie.  I was really impressed at how well the movie followed the book.  The way that Anna and Christan meet is spot on and I have to say that my absolute favorite scene is when Anna first drunk dials Christian from the bar.  Dakota Johnson was laugh out loud funny.  There were in fact several scenes where the theatre was full of laughter.

I was seriously on the fence about whether or not Dakota and Jamie were going to be able to pull off the Christian and Anna that I had pictured when I was reading the book and was pleasantly surprised at what an excellent job they did.  The chemistry on screen was of course smoking hot and true to the book there is a lot of sex, bondage, and spanking in this book. If you are not comforable watching naked people have crazy, rough, and passionate sex on the big screen surrounded by movie goers you may want to wait until you can rent this one.  I was glad to have a date by my side.  There is no way in hell I would take a teenage daugher (I have one) or my mother to see this movie.  This movie is about sex and not vanilla sex so if you are comfortable watching soft porn with your mom or kids go ahead, but I would not reccomend it.  This movie barely missed the NC 17 rating so just keep that in mind. Between the sex scenes there are the amazing bits and pieces of the book that made you fall in love with Christian and Anna including riding in Charlie Tango, dancing, piano playing, and gliding.  My second favorite scene is when the contract is negotiated.  Dakota again will have you cracking up.

There were of course some details that were left out however.  There is only so much you can cover in the span of two hours.  One thing that I really did miss and am looking forward to seeing in the second movie is Mrs. Robinson.  Christian discusses with Anna that he went to see her but you do not get to see that scene on the big screen.  I am really excited to see who will play her in Fifty Shades Darker.

Overall going to see Fifty Shades was a positive movie going experience.  I will most definatly buy this one on DVD when it comes out.

Excerpt

Why don’t you go get off your feet until dinner.  I need to go shower real quick.  Dalton did you call Ulysses about getting Devonshire’s shoe replaced?”

Just like that the moment was broken as Tanner and Dalton discussed a horse that had thrown a shoe that day.  Clint gave her a wink, but he went back to working on the food prep, leaving her to do as she was told and head into the living room.

She sunk into the butter soft leather of the sofa, sighing with pleasure as she put the flower on the end table next to her, and took a sip of wine.  Flavors exploded on her tongue, and the mellow scent of berry filled her nose.  There was nothing of interest on T.V.  so she stopped it on a music station, tapping her foot as Jason Derulo sang about “The Other Side.”

Her eyes drifted shut, and she let herself be swallowed up in the lyrics of the song and the uplifting dance beat.  She wondered if she could handle a fling with one of the three Keegan brothers.  It wasn’t like she would be here forever, in a couple of weeks Rachel’s mom would go back to Oklahoma, and Zoey would be able to move in there if she hadn’t found her own place yet.  Living on the Triple T she didn’t have any rent to pay so she should be able to save up the money for a deposit pretty quickly.  What if until then, she let herself be seduced by Clint, or even Dalton?  There was no way she would offer herself up to any of them after being turned down so flatly by Tanner and then Dalton, but if she just flirted back a bit, maybe…

A sudden sinking of the sofa cushion next to her, made her jump and her eyes flew open to find Clint settling in beside her.

“Whoa, sorry angel.  I didn’t mean to scare you.  I seem to have a particular talent for that.” His arm went around the back of the couch just like Dalton’s always seemed to do when he sat with her.

“It’s alright, I guess I was lost in thought and didn’t hear you come in.” She reached for the remote and turned the volume down on the T.V.  as Christina Aquilera started singing “Your Body.”

“That’s a good song.” Clint said, stealing the remote from her hand to turn it up just as she sang about finishing off on her own.  What a fitting song for the thoughts she had been having a moment ago.  “You know, I got to meet her once.”

“Who?”

“Christina.  I guess meet isn’t quite the right word.  I got to park her car once when I was working as a valet.”

Zoey laughed out loud, and Clint’s eyes widened.  “You have got to do that more often.  You’re beautiful when you laugh.”

A snort slipped out and she shook her head.  “And you are a Grade A flirt.”

“Grade A, huh? You really think so? I’d rather be a Grade A prime piece of meat in your eyes, I think.” He wiggled his eyebrows sending Zoey into another round of giggles.  She whacked his shoulder with the back of her hand, and he grabbed it in both of his, holding it over his heart.  “You’re breaking my heart, angel.  And here I thought we were going to get married and have a dozen kids together.”

“A dozen?  You have to be joking?  I can’t have a dozen kids, I would swell up to the size of a house!” She teased, and he tugged on her hand pulling her against his chest.

“Perfect, as long as you’re mine I don’t care how big you are.”

Clint swooped in for a kiss before she could respond, and she melted against him.  Tomato sauce and man was all she tasted as his tongue swept past the barrier of her lips and stroked over her own.  One of his hands slipped from between them to cup the back of her head, holding her in place for his mastery, and she lost herself in him.

Someone moaned, and then whimpered, and she was startled to realize it was her.  Her hands flexed against his chest, fisting into the fabric of his t-shirt, and kneading the muscles of his pecks as she kissed him back.

A sharp slap on her raised ass broke them apart, and she turned to glare at Dalton, still breathing hard.  “What the hell?”

“Save a little sugar for me, pretty lady.  Clint here has to go check his masterpiece.  The timer just went off.” Dalton looked way too pleased to have come upon her making out with his little brother, and she couldn’t decide if she was irritated or if she wanted to kiss him so that she could compare the two again.

Her lips tingled, and her pussy clenched when Clint brushed a sweet kiss over her mouth and then swaggered into the kitchen leaving her alone with Dalton.  She turned a hard look on his grinning face.

“You enjoyed that.”

He gave her an innocent look, “What? The interrupting part, or the part where I got to watch from the doorway as you tried to swallow Clint’s tongue down your throat?”

Face flaming, Zoey glared at him with all of the intensity she could muster.  It might have helped if he was wrong.  “You know a gentleman wouldn’t point those things out.”

Dalton’s laugh boomed through the room, and she fought to keep a straight face, “Whatever gave you the idea that I was a gentleman, pretty lady?”

Chapter One of Weekend Surrender

Chapter One

Rachel slammed the closet door behind her as she emerged dressed in her sexiest, country cutie clothes.  Her stonewashed blue denim miniskirt barely covered the bottom curves of her ass cheeks.  It was paired with a man’s red and blue plaid dress shirt, and the shirttails were tied just under her perky B-cup breasts.  She left the buttons open so her tits were clearly visible rising out of the top of her blood-red satin pushup bra.

Her tanned midsection was completely bare except for the crystal belly ring that dangled in her belly button.  From the back she knew the view would be of the half dollar size daisy tattoo she had gotten when she turned eighteen, just above the top of her black belt.  The hand-tooled leather was clasped between her hips bones, with a large belt buckle in the shape of a star.  On her feet were a pair of black cowboy boots with silver embellishments, and her long, slim legs were bare.

She was dressed to kill with every intention of causing a few heart attacks tonight.  Her chestnut brown hair hung down to the middle of her back in large wavy curls, and she ran her fingers through it carelessly as she walked.

Her makeup was applied with precision so her oversized chocolate brown eyes were nearly as prominent as her blood-red lips.  She had always hated the fullness of her lips, but men seemed to love them.  Mitch always called them dick sucking lips.

She hated Mitch now.

Mitch deserved Connie Sanders.  The bleach blonde tramp had been trying to sink her claws into Mitchell Edwards for more than six months, and she had finally gotten her way.  Well screw them both.  If plastic boobs, and a spray-on tan was what Mitch got off on, then he deserved Connie.

Rachel was going to go out and find a man to fuck her heartbreak away.  She wanted raw, dirty, raunchy sex.  Not the soft, gentle missionary sex Mitch seemed to favor.  She wanted to be shoved against a wall, or held down by her wrists as a large muscular man devoured her completely.  That’s why she created this plan.

It was a Friday night, and that meant a packed house at Robin’s, the local bar that Rachel had waited tables at through college.  She had met Mitch there, and he would no doubt be there tonight playing darts with his cronies, while Connie giggled and preened over a watered down margarita.  So in order to prove to the world that Rachel Lia Morgan was completely and utterly over her ex-boyfriend, she was going on the prowl on his turf.

There were usually dozens of hot men at Robin’s on the weekends.  All of the local ranchers and ranch hands from the outskirts of Stone River usually hit the bar on Friday night looking for some action.  Never before had Rachel considered indulging in a one-night stand, but tonight was her night.

She spritzed a little bit of her favorite perfume on her throat, and then grabbed her small purse.  On her way out the door she noticed her cell phone was blinking with a missed message.  She climbed into her silver Ford F150 as she hit the play message button.

“Rach, I know you don’t want to talk to me, but I want to apologize.  I didn’t mean for you to find out about Connie like that…Rach?  Please call me so we can talk this out.  You can’t just throw two years out the window.  I made a mistake, damn it—”

The voice clicked off as she hit the delete button, and dropped her phone back into her purse.  Mitch could beg and plead all he wanted, but she had already made her peace with their breakup.  She wasn’t interested in his excuses anymore.  She turned the volume up on her truck radio, so Miranda Lambert’s tune “Mama’s Broken Heart” blared out the windows into the night, and headed toward her freedom.

The bar’s parking lot was packed with work trucks.  With exception of only a handful of cars that probably belonged to the female patrons of the bar.  Rachel backed her truck into a small parking stall at the back edge of the lot, right next to a black Dodge Ram Quad Cab that looked like it had rolled off the lot and onto the ranch just a few hours ago.  Realizing she had parked rather close to the truck, she carefully opened her door, and slipped out into the small space.

A large masculine hand covered hers, where it rested on the top edge of her truck door, and she gasped.

“Sunshine, if you nick my new truck with your door, I’m going to have to spank that cute little ass raw.”  The voice in her ear sent a shiver over her skin, and she flushed at his words.

She turned her head to see who was behind her that would have any right to speak to her like that, and she nearly groaned out loud when her brown eyes met those of Parker Brooks.  Parker Brooks was one of the four Brooks brothers who owned Brooks Pastures-a local cattle ranch.  The four brothers shared two things in common, their love of ranching, and their smoking hot good looks.  Dark hair, dark eyes, long lean muscular cowboy bodies, all tucked up under a cowboy hat.  It made Rachel’s blood sing just thinking about the four of them.

Holding her breath she dropped her gaze from his dark eyes down to his sexy mouth, and she felt her own tongue dart out to wet her lips unconsciously.  His raised eyebrow told her that he noticed, and she shook her head slightly to clear her lust fogged brain.

“I’m sorry, Parker.  I did park a little close there, but no worries, I was careful,” she said with a smile she hoped would distract him from the increase in her breathing, and the rise and fall of her breasts.

It clearly didn’t work, because his eyes shifted from her lips directly down the front of her shirt, and then they dragged lower.  His gaze drifted from her golden colored abs, down to her booted feet, and then he reached out and tugged her hand free of the truck door.  Surprised, she followed his lead when he turned her around so her back was to him again.  A long, low whistle had goose bumps forming on her arms, but the finger stroking over her tattoo in the small of her back was what had her creaming her panties.

“Holy shit, sunshine.  Who let you out of the house dressed like that?” he asked in a gravelly rough voice that nearly knocked Rachel’s knees out from underneath her.

The meaning of his question sunk in, and her irritation overcame her libido.  “Last I looked in the mirror I was a grown woman, cowboy.  I don’t need anyone’s permission or approval of my wardrobe.”

Parker let her go when she tugged her hand out of his.  She slammed her truck door and started to move out from between the two vehicles.  “You might be grown up, but wearing a skirt like that is asking for trouble.”

She paused and looked back over her shoulder.  “Maybe that’s exactly what I wanted,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders.

His slow, sexy smile made her mouth go dry, and she swallowed hard.  “If you want trouble, little girl, all you need to do is ask.”

Trying to cover up her nerves at his deliberately seductive invitation, she snorted out a laugh, “If I decide I want your kind of trouble, I won’t need to ask.”  Tossing her hair back over her shoulder, she headed for the door of the bar.

Before she could pull it open, a large hand reached around her for the door handle, and another equally large hand settled on her hip.  Whipping her head violently, ready to give Parker Brooks a piece of her mind, she froze in place when it was his brother, Hudson’s face only inches from hers.

“Hey, honey,” he said with a quick smile, and a wink, “Let me get the door for you.”

“Thanks, Hudson,” she responded, sighing with relief that that was all he said.  She wanted a wild fling, but the Brooks brothers were out of her league for multiple reasons.

They were all at least ten years older than her twenty-four years, and they were all wickedly sexy men.  The rumors around town were the four brothers shared their women, and right at this moment, looking into Hudson’s heated cocoa-colored gaze, she would have believed it.  She had an inkling he had heard her interaction with Parker, but she wasn’t going to tempt fate by asking.

Instead she tipped her chin up and turned back to the door, only to realize that it wasn’t Hudson’s hand on her.  Sawyer Brooks stood on her other side with his hand resting lightly on the curve of her hip, and the rest of his body leaning nonchalantly against the door jam.

“Rachel,” he said softly, and her pulse took off racing.  Okay, the idea of having a sexy one-night stand had merit, but now that she was surrounded by large muscular men, she wasn’t so sure she could go through with the reality.  “No need to rush off.  How are you tonight?”

Blinking in surprise, she answered automatically in a snotty tone, “I’m fan-fuckin-tastic, Sawyer, thank you for asking.”

His eyes darkened with irritation, and his lip curled up in a grimace.  “Don’t use language like that, you’re a lady, and ladies shouldn’t curse.”

Rachel couldn’t help it.  She burst into a roar of laughter.  Not giggles, or chuckles, but large loud belly laughs.  “Are you kidding me?  Sawyer Brooks, I have seen you compete in the local rodeo, and heard the nastiness that spews from those luscious lips.  Do you really think you can tell me not to curse?”

Sawyer focused in on the one phrase from her whole little speech that he liked, “Luscious lips, huh?”  Those sexy lips curved up into an equally sinful smile that had her pussy tightening, and her thighs clenching.

She forced herself to roll her eyes, even as a blush covered her cheeks.  “Whatever.  I’m going inside to get a drink, dance a little, and maybe play some pool.  Excuse me, gentlemen.”  She reached again for the door handle, only to have a new set of hands settle on her shoulders and tug her backwards until she stumbled.  Instead of falling on her ass though, her plump butt cheeks settled against the rough denim of a man’s Levi’s, and a heavy arm banded under her ribs holding her upright.

“Apologize, Rachel, you were rude to Sawyer, and he was just trying to teach you a few manners,” Parker’s voice rumbled against her ear, and she bit her tongue hard to swallow her moan of lust.

“No.  Let me go, Parker, this isn’t funny,” she ground out, and she began to struggle to get out of Parker’s strong grip.

“Stop it.  You’ll end up hurting yourself.  Now, Sawyer and Hudson deserve a sincere apology, and then I want an explanation as to what you’re doing at Robin’s dressed like a two bit hooker on fight night?”  Ice coated his words, and she stilled in his arms.  A wave of hurt and embarrassment went through her.  Did she really look so bad?  She had put on the clothes that made her feel the sexiest.

“I apologize if I’ve offended anyone, but I have plans inside the bar that include a bottle of tequila, and a few spins around the dance floor.  You are currently delaying my plans.  I have no intention of prostituting myself, because I’ve never in my life felt the need to ask a man for sex.  I’m dressed in clothing I picked out, and like.  I don’t personally give a damn if you approve or not, Mr. Brooks.”  She focused all of her anger on her words, and when he finally released her she sighed heavily, “Thank you.  Have a lovely evening, gentlemen.”

Hudson tugged the door open, and Sawyer stepped back from the doorway allowing her to saunter past him.  Once she was safely in the bar, she let out a heavy, shaky breath and made her way across the room directly into the bathroom to settle her nerves.  It might take more than a drink or two to wipe the Brooks brothers from her fantasies tonight.

She was hoping to escape from the nightmares of her past, but her latest case has brought them right back to her door.

A young woman has gone missing, and she didn’t go willingly. When Kelsey discovers that the girl is actually a shifter, she knows she should drop the case and walk away. Bodies are piling up, and her case is becoming center stage for a conflict that could shatter the fragile peace between wolves and vampires.

As the hunt intensifies, she finds herself trapped between two men—Gray, a magnetic half-demon lawman, and the ancient vampire Marcus Vorenus.  Kelley’s Review

Lexi’s stories just keep getting better and better.  The Thieves series is my absolute favorite urban fantasy series.  The characters are complex and the problems they face seem to be getting darker and darker.  It is very easy to get lost in Lexi’s stories as you embark on epic adventures with the most unusual characters.

In Ripper, the gang is back together again and we see what life is like after Daniel becomes king, a father, and a partner to both Zoey and Dev.  When he faces what the Nex Apparatus really is, he handles things poorly and in the blink of an eye evertying is sprialling out of control. He forced to make some harsh decisions that go against those advice of those he whom he loves.

Kelsey Atwood is a loner.  She has only one real friend and she keeps people at arms length.  Kelsey will find out later on that there is a reason why, and she will not want to accept it.  She is a badass tracker and can find things that other people overlook which makes her a great private investigator.  When she is given a missing person’s case that leads her into the supernatural world, she finds something that she never though existed.  Love.

Grayson Sloane is in love with Kelsey Atwood.  He has been since the day he laid down in a hotel bridal suite and had a vision of her as his beautiful bride.  Now he just has to convince Kelsey that his love for her is real.  That becomes a much harder feat than he ever anticipated.  Once the truth is uncovered he stands to loose everything.

Of course we get to see the infamous Marcus Vorenus.  I have been rooting for Marcus to get a happily ever after since Steal The Light and it almost seems as if he does, but there is only one problem.  Kelsey is not a vamipire companion and Marcus’s destiny is set in place.  He will have a companion someday.  For now he becomes her closest confidant and trains her to trust her instincts and control what lies beneath the exterior.

This story made me laugh and cry and kept me up until 1:00 am on a work night. I was gripping my iPad during the finale fight scene so hard my fingers are still store.  Lexi had me on the edge of my seat.  I adored Kelsey and am looking forward to her next adventure in this series.   Bravo Lexi on writting one heck of a rollercoaster ride.

Character Interview

We are so excited that we were given the opportunity to ask Zach and Jillian some burning questions that our readers wanted to know.

Hi Zach!   We have just a few quick questions for you and really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us.

When was the first moment you saw Jillian and realized you were attracted to her? Do you remember what your thoughts were in that moment?  I was seventeen, and a junior in high school, and she was fifteen. She was my best friend’s younger sister, so I knew that I had to keep my mouth shut, but she was going to the prom with some guy I don’t remember, but she was all done up and for the first time, she looked like a woman and not just a little kid. She knocked me on my ass.

Being a parent and having a relationship is HARD. What are some tricks you and Jillian have learned to keep things *ahem* going? Boy, you’re not kidding! Let’s just say, thank God my kid has friends who invite him over for sleep overs.

What is one thing you wish everyone knew about Jillian? The one word that plagues your mind every time her name is mentioned? Nurturing. That beneath that tough girl exterior is a soft, nurturing, maternal woman. She’s simply amazing.

Hi Jillian!  It is soo good to meet you.  Thank you for taking the time to answer some questions for us.

What about you Jillian? When was the moment you saw Zack and thought, “Damn…” Oh wait. That might have been what I thought. You get what I’m asking, though, right? Do you remember that moment? Oh, I so know what you’re asking. Zack’s always been hot. Let’s be honest. I had a huge crush on him when I was a kid. But I think it was when I came home for the 4th of July and he was home and single, at the bar. You’d never know it to look at him, but the man can dance!

Seth and Zack are a packaged deal, obviously. What is one of your favorite moments you’ve had with the two of them? Making cookies with them was so fun. Snowmobiling. But my favorite was Christmas.

What is the one thing that comes to your mind when Zack’s name is mentioned around you? Is there a favorite part of him that you just can’t get enough of?  Have you seen the man’s ass? It’s a really spectacular ass.

5 star

Kelley’s Review

I was up until 1am. I could not put this one down. I have been looking forward to Zach and Jillian’s story since we met them in Loving Cara. The chemistry between Zach and Jillian is scorching. Kristen weaves a fairytale of two broken souls as they climb their way out of mounds of baggage for a chance to love again.

I loved Zach from the moment I met him in Loving Cara. He took on the task of caring for his estranged son when he got dropped off on his doorstep with so much compassion it brought me to tears. Zach is battling so many demons from his time in the military when he gets reunited with his son and yet he is able to put those demons to rest and concentrate on what really matters. Seth’s behavior shows signs that he was abused by Zach’s ex-wife Kensie. Zach would never know the extent of the abuse if it were not for Jillian.

Jillian and Seth find a common bond as Jillian reveals pieces of her broken childhood to Seth. The two become kindred spirits and Jillian begins to soothe Seth’s soul. The more Zach sees Jillian bond with Seth the deeper he falls in love with her. Jillian and Zach were a lust at first sight couple and seeing their character development was so enchanting. Their wounds begin to heal as their souls find comfort in one another. Jillian made my heart burst with joy. She was so kind and sweet and yet a complete minx with her skin-tight jeans and Jimmy Choos. She keeps Zach on his toes and off-balance most of the time. She is the Yin to Zach’s Yang.

Of course Kristen had me crying big ugly tears when Zach gets some news that he does not handle well and ends up really hurting the ones he loves the most but the end of this story is so sweet that you cant help but smile and be filled with warm fuzzies. 5 big fat stars Kristen Proby!! Bravo on another amazing read.

dance with my heart

Synopsis

Traumatized by her past, former police officer Jane Dillon gets a new start in Los Angeles as a bodyguard. If she weren’t so good at saving people, she might seek a new career. At least when she moonlights as a dance teacher, no one shoots at her. One impossible-to-please macho boss, one hunk of manly hot action hero, and one oversized Southern family set her on a course she never saw coming.

Former Navy SEAL, Danny Baker, has a lot to deal with between his dad’s health, his sister’s public breakup, and figuring out how to get rid of a female employee without getting a sexual discrimination suit filed against him. He’s always believed it to be his duty to protect women and children, but seeing the beautiful and lethal Jane in action turns his worldview upside down. He’d almost rather go back to the jungle, except the dance floors of L.A. and the woods of Georgia are providing plenty of excitement.

If they can overcome their differences, Danny’s family, and Jane’s past, they might find that they make the perfect team.

Excerpt:

“What about you?” Danny asked. “Who taught you to dance?”

“My grandfather, sort of,” Jane said. “He put me in karate and dancing when I started kindergarten. He didn’t know what to do with a little girl. I guess he tried to find balance for me.”

“Thanks to him, you can kick my ass and dance circles around me,” he said over his shoulder as he did a merengue step in place, while she literally danced around him. “I’ll have to thank him if I ever meet him.”

Before she returned to face him, she flared her fingers as she ran her hand across his back, feeling the taught muscles there. She tore her gaze from the fluid movement of his hips to see his eyes twinkling with laughter.

What had he been saying? Oh yeah, Grandfather.

Jane didn’t have the heart to tell him her grandfather had passed. Because it reminded her of how alone she was in the world, she didn’t like to think about it.

Hero By Night

 Chapter One Revealed:

“Thirty minutes,” Lena murmured. “That has to be a record.”

Lena Clark stared at the Cascade Mountains, the postcard-perfect backdrop to the backyard barbecue on the verge of turning into a full-blown party. Hero, her golden retriever, sat at her feet by the man-made pond in Eric Moore’s yard. Although the cleared field behind the sprawling timber-framed structure, home to the owner of the largest timber operation in Oregon, could hardly be classified as a “yard.” Inside the Portland city limits, where she’d lived on and off for the past six years—more off than on, really, due to training and deployments—people had the traditional postage stamp–size grassy areas behind their homes.

But she’d escaped Portland. And landed in Independence Falls, hoping to find her way to normal. Now she was thirty minutes closer.

“I talked to half the people here,” Lena continued, her fingers brushing her dog’s golden fur. Hero’s ears perked up, his head cocked to one side in what she’d come to think of as his I’m-listening expression. A stuffed yellow duck, the doggie toy she’d bought to keep him from chewing on furniture, hung from his mouth. “I mingled without running away and hiding.”

She hadn’t shaken a single hand, and Hero had been by her side the entire time, but she wasn’t looking for major breakthroughs or big victories. At twenty-eight, she knew a war was not won overnight. It took time, bravery, and determination. She possessed all of those things. Even if she had lost more than she liked to admit on the battlefield—like the ability to let anyone get close to her.

“Hey, Lena. Are you OK?”

She turned at the sound of Katie Summers’s voice, glancing past her friend to the crowd gathered on the blue stone patio. “Fine. I just needed some space from the party.”

And a chance to talk to her dog …

OK, so maybe normal was still out of reach.

“Georgia told me that you were looking for a place to stay,” Katie said.

“Just for a night, maybe two. I’m planning to find my own apartment soon.” Along with a job and her equilibrium. “But I wanted to give Georgia and Eric some space seeing as Nate is visiting his grandmother.”

“You think they might get down and dirty on the kitchen table while the three-year-old is out of town?”

“Yes. I do.” Lena looked up the hill. Eric stood behind Georgia, his arms wrapped around her waist, holding her close against his body. Georgia held a beer in one hand, her other reaching back, brushing against Eric’s leg as if she had to touch him. The kitchen table would only be the beginning for those two—if their home was free and clear of a guest who moved in for a couple of nights, and more than a week later, still hadn’t left.

“The apartment over our barn is yours for as long as you need it,” Katie said.

“Your brothers won’t mind?” Lena slipped her hands into the hidden pockets in her long halter dress. Katie still lived with her three older brothers on their family farm. Granted, Josh, the youngest of the three, was in the hospital right now recuperating from a logging accident that had landed him in a coma. But Chad and Brody might object to Katie lending out the apartment to an almost-stranger. Lena hadn’t met Chad yet, but she knew the family was close and the brothers were protective of their little sister.

Liam Trulane, Georgia’s older brother and the man head-over-heels in love with Katie, might not like the idea either. “And you don’t need it?”

“Liam and I have other plans,” Katie said. “Far away from my brothers’ watchful eyes. There is a spare key under a rock to the left of the door. Once you’re inside, move it to the right and take the key upstairs with you. That is the in-use signal.”

“But Hero—”

Katie’s expression turned serious. “Lena, I would never ask you to leave Hero behind. He’s welcome in the apartment too.”

Lena felt a rush of relief. The thought of leaving her golden retriever outside, even for a night, sent her barreling toward panic. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome. Maybe I’ll see you tomorrow? Georgia and I were planning to take a hike. Nothing crazy. I made her promise.”

“Sure.” Lena knew all about Georgia’s need for adventure, the drive that had followed Georgia home from a war zone. And Lena understood it too. Probably more than most, even if she didn’t share the same pull. PTSD refused to follow a linear, predetermined path. Nightmares and survivor’s guilt haunted Georgia. Those symptoms were on Lena’s list, but anxiety topped the chart.

In Lena’s shattered world, every little touch triggered fear. If her ex or one of her friends wrapped an arm around her, took her hand, or pulled her into a hug, she would brace for an attack. Fear would build until panic won. And afterward, once it receded, she’d sink further into depression, cutting herself off from the world around her.

Anxiety had become her constant companion, leading her to an isolated place. Until she’d decided to do something about it, entering therapy and finding the golden retriever lying at her feet, gnawing on a stuffed dog toy.

Katie turned to head up the hill. Lena watched, wondering if she should go back to the party and try for another thirty minutes. She scanned the group of people mingling and drinking—and spotted him.

Jeans and a button-down flannel shirt hugged his body, not too tight, but enough to suggest that this man had muscles begging to be touched. He raised a hand, running it through his short, wavy brown hair. Everything about him screamed for hands-on exploration. That chiseled jaw, the light dusting of stubble as if he hadn’t shaved in a day, the way he smiled …

Lena drew a sharp breath and tried to look away. But her brain short-circuited and her eyes refused. His sex appeal flowed down the grassy slope like rushing water. And if she weren’t careful it would sweep her off her feet, and leave her fighting for air. Looking at him, she wished the road to normal led straight to orgasms.

He turned his head and their gazes met across the empty space. And she swore his warm, I-promise-you’ll-like-me-if-you-get-to-know-me grin touched his eyes.

Lena dropped her gaze to the ground, breaking the contact. He wasn’t touching her, not even close. But that smile …

She turned to face the water. It was better not to look at what she couldn’t have. And that man—he was one giant step beyond thirty minutes of small talk.

Sometimes beauty knocked a man on his ass, leaving him damn near desperate for a taste, a touch, and hopefully a round or two between the sheets—or tied up in them. The knockout blonde with the large golden retriever at her feet took the word “beautiful” to a new level.

Chad Summers stared at her, unable to look away or dim the smile on his face. He usually masked his interest better, stopping short of looking like he was begging for it before learning a woman’s name. But this mysterious beauty had special written all over her.

She stared at him, her gaze open and wanting. For a heartbeat. Then she turned away, her back to the party as she stared out at Eric Moore’s pond.

Her hair flowed in long waves down her back. One look left him wishing he could wrap his hand around her shiny locks and pull. His gaze traveled over her back, taking in the outline of gentle curves beneath her flowing, and oh-so-feminine, floor-length dress. Chad had nothing against jeans on a woman. But he loved clothes that offered access to a woman’s legs. The thought of the beauty’s long skirt decorating her waist propelled him into motion. Chad headed in her direction, moving away from the easy, quiet conversation about God-knew-what on the patio.

He appreciated the fact that Eric Moore—who’d recently become his boss/business partner after Moore Timber bought the Summers Family Trucking business—had decided to throw a party celebrating Chad’s little brother’s return to the land of awake and alert. But the laid-back gathering lacked excitement. Music. Dancing. Something more than a small group of people he’d known most of his life—three dozen at most—drinking beers and eating burgers.

The blonde, a mysterious stranger in a sea of familiar faces, might be the spark this party needed. He was a few feet away when the dog abandoned his post at her side and cut Chad off. Either the golden retriever was protecting his owner, or the animal was in cahoots with the familiar voice calling his name.

“Chad Summers!”

The blonde turned at the sound, looking first at him, her blue eyes widening as if surprised at how close he stood, and then at her dog. From the other direction, a familiar face with short black hair—Susan maybe?—marched toward him.

Without a word, Maybe Susan stopped by his side and raised her glass. With a dog in front of him, trees to one side, and an angry woman on his other, there was no escape.

“Hi there.” He left off her name just in case he’d guessed wrong, but offered a warm, inviting smile. Most women fell for that grin, but if Maybe Susan had at one time—and seeing her up close, she looked very familiar, though he could swear he’d never slept with her—she wasn’t falling for it today.

She poured the cool beer over his head, her mouth set in a firm line. “That was for my sister. Susan Lewis? You spent the night with her six months ago and never called.”

Chad nodded, silently grateful he hadn’t addressed the pissed-off woman by her sister’s name. “My apologies, ma’am.”

“You’re a dog,” Susan’s sister announced. The animal at his feet stepped forward as if affronted by the comparison.

“For the past six months, my little sister has talked about you, saving every article about your family’s company,” the angry woman continued.

Whoa … Yes, he’d taken Susan Lewis out once and they’d ended the night back at his place, but he could have sworn they were on the same page. Hell, he’d heard her say the words, I’m not looking for anything serious, and he’d believed her. It was one freaking night. He didn’t think he needed signed documents that spelled out his intentions and hers.

“She’s practically built a shrine to you,” she added, waving her empty beer cup. “Susan was ready to plan your wedding.”

“Again, I’m sorry, but it sounds like there was a miscommunication.” Chad withdrew a bandana from his back pocket, one that had belonged to his father, and wiped his brow. “But wedding bells are not in my future. At least not anytime soon.”

The angry sister shook her head, spun on her heels, and marched off.

Chad turned to the blonde and offered a grin. She looked curious, but not ready to run for the hills. “I guess I made one helluva first impression.”

“Hmm.” She glanced down at her dog as if seeking comfort in the fact that he stood between them.

“I’m Chad Summers.” He held out his hand—the one part of his body not covered in beer.

“You’re Katie’s brother.” She glanced briefly at his extended hand, but didn’t take it.

He lowered his arm, still smiling. “Guilty.”

“Lena.” She nodded to the dog. “That’s Hero.”

“Nice to meet you both.” He looked up the hill. Country music drifted down from the house. Someone had finally added some life to the party. Couples moved to the beat on the blue stone patio, laughing and drinking under the clear Oregon night sky. In the corner, Liam Trulane tossed logs into a fire pit.

“After I dry off,” Chad said, turning back to the blonde, “how about a dance?”

“No.”

Chad waited for an excuse, expecting a lie—her dog would be lonely or she had a boyfriend. That latter one, lie or not, would send him on his way. But she didn’t say another word.

He stepped toward her, as close as the dog would allow. He was close enough to smell her floral scent. It was too faint for a perfume, most likely her soap. There was a hint of lavender and a touch of honey. As if the sight of her wasn’t enough, the smell made him want to taste her. He leaned in, a fraction of an inch, nothing more. But the next thing he knew, her dog was pushing at his legs.

“Hero is protective of my space.” Lena’s voice had a breathless quality that suggested maybe this time she wished her dog would butt out. Or maybe that was his imagination.

Chad moved back, looking at the golden retriever with renewed interest. For a breed with a reputation for being kind and friendly, this one looked as if he was debating dropping his chew toy and sinking his teeth into Chad’s leg.

“So what brings you two to Independence Falls?” he asked, keeping one eye on Hero.

“Georgia offered me a place to stay. While I get back on my feet.”

“Between jobs?” The rest of the country might be headed toward recovery, but rural Oregon was still suffering high unemployment. A lot of people around here were doing their best to “get back on their feet.”

“I guess you could say that,” she said.

She didn’t give an inch. And hell, he liked that. Rocking back on his heels, Chad pretended to think. “What did you do before? I might know someone who is looking.”

“It doesn’t matter,” she said. “I can’t go back to it.”

“Being a model is that tough?” He offered her a teasing look that he knew for a fact helped separate women from their panties.

Lena raised an eyebrow. “I wouldn’t know. And you can drop the sweet-talking act.”

“You’d prefer I talk dirty?” Chad cocked his head, studying her. There it was. A spark of interest in her blue eyes. But she hid it quickly.

“I’ve spent most of my life on army bases. I’m betting you don’t have anything I haven’t heard before.”

So the drop-dead gorgeous, not-a-model woman was a military brat? He took that tidbit and filed it away. He wanted to know more about her—where she’d grown up, where she’d worked, if she screamed during sex or maintained the calm control he was finding wildly attractive.

“I might use some of the same words,” he said. “But they would have a different effect on you.”

“You’re that good with your words?”

“Yes. And that’s not the only thing I’m good with.” He paused for a beat, expecting a laugh and hoping for a breathy sigh. Nothing. Her face was an impartial mask. “So how about that dance? I could whisper naughty things in your ear.”

“No.” The way she said that one word sounded like a reflex.

“A walk under the stars?”

“Romantic, but I can’t.” She stepped away even though he’d been careful not to move a muscle in her direction. “I wish I could.”

This time her words were not a quick dismissal. She said the word “wish” with the fervor of a kid looking up to the stars and asking for a snow day in July. Hell, if there was one thing he understood, it was wishing and hoping for things he couldn’t have.

His mother walking through the front door to the farmhouse and admitting that leaving her family had been a mistake … His dad seated beside him in a helicopter one last time …

“Can I ask you something?” Chad said.

She nodded. A strand of blond hair fell across her face and he resisted the urge to brush it away. With any other woman, he would not have thought twice about an innocent touch in a public space. But he sensed Lena had boundaries that demanded respect.

“Where did you meet Georgia?”

“In therapy.”

The words, coupled with her matter-of-fact tone, nearly knocked him on his ass. “You’re a veteran. I never would have guessed that one.”

“A little different from a model,” she said with a small smile. “I was in the army. Until eighteen months ago.”

“The job you can’t go back to,” he said, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.

She nodded, her blue eyes trained on him as if tracking his movements. Had someone hurt her? The thought of it pissed him off. Or had the time spent serving her country left her battle-scarred on the inside? Either way, he wasn’t the man to fix her problems. He’d never been drawn to wounded creatures.

Chad glanced at the dog. Whatever had happened to her, Lena already had her hero. She didn’t need him. And he didn’t want a woman in his life he couldn’t walk away from come sunrise. Or a woman he couldn’t touch …

He looked up at the patio and spotted another blonde. With her jeans and low-cut blouse, the other woman possessed the same petite build as Lena. But there was nothing striking about her. Looking at her didn’t leave him wanting to pull her hair, or hear his name on her lips, never mind learn her secrets.

“She looks like fun,” Lena said.

Busted.

He glanced at the woman who made him want to do all those things and more. “Sure you’re not?”

“I can be,” she said with a wry smile, as if this bit of information was a carefully guarded secret. “But not the kind you’re in the market for. Not tonight.”

“That’s a shame. I was looking forward to whispering dirty things in your ear.”

She pursed her lips, her eyes filled with wistful wanting. “I’m not ready for that kind of fun,” she said, her voice low, but certain. “Not yet.”

“That’s fair.” Yeah, those words made it crystal clear she wasn’t up for his no-strings-attached, down-and-dirty nights. But it didn’t keep him from hoping.

“If that changes, I’d like to know,” he added. Chad slowly backed away from the woman and her dog, offering her one last smile. “Try and have a good time tonight, Lena. This is a party.”

“I’ll take that under consideration,” she said, the golden retriever returning to her side. “Good-bye, Chad Summers.”
