About Nowhere But Here

A Chicago reporter in her mid-twenties unexpectedly finds love in Napa Valley when she’s assigned to spend a week with a famously reclusive genius.

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. From the outside, her life seems charmed. She has a handsome, long-term boyfriend and a budding journalism career at a popular Chicago newspaper. But in reality, her relationship is going nowhere, and she’s quickly losing motivation for what she once believed was her dream job. When her boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously, Kate loses all hope of finding love.

With no living family and few friends, Kate confides in her boss. Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, he gives Kate the opportunity to jumpstart her career. The assignment: to interview the famously reclusive R.J. Lawson, a wealthy tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as a Napa Valley vintner. The week takes an unexpected turn, however, when Lawson refuses to divulge any information. Desperate for a lead, Kate turns to Jamie, a vineyard hand who shows her the romance of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. But his connection to Lawson is ambiguous, and when Jamie disappears before the end of the week, Kate is left to investigate another story: the truth behind the man who stole her heart.

USA TODAY bestselling author Renée Carlino explored love and heartbreak in her beautifully written debut Sweet Thing, and her newest novel does not disappoint. For fans of Colleen Hoover, K.A. Tucker, and Katja Millay, Nowhere But Here is a stirring and satisfying romance that you won’t want to put down.

4 star read

Robin’s Review

4.5 Stars.  Sweet Thing, the first novel published by Renee Carlino, rightfully earned a spot on my list of favorite novels for 2013.  I found the main characters to be refreshing and connected with them instantly, which made Sweet Thing an extremely satisfying read.  I appreciate the opportunity to review an advanced reader copy of the new contemporary romance from Renee Carlino, Nowhere but Here, which has been provided to me by her publisher through NetGalley.  This is my honest review.

Kate Corbin no longer has any living relatives.  She has struggled since the death of Rose, a childhood friend of her mother who ended up raising her.  Her mother passed away when she was eight without telling her the name of her father.  She is currently going nowhere in a relationship with Stephen, who doesn’t seem to love her or even care about what is going on in her life.  Kate has turned to a homeless man who calls himself “Just Bob” for advice, whose first piece of advice to her was, “You’re all you’ve got!”

Kate has lost all motivation for her career as a journalist and has struggled with her job for several months.  Her boss at the Chicago Crier newspaper, Jerry, gives her an assignment with substance, hoping to ignite her spark.  She is to spend a week in Napa, California, to interview and write an article about R.J. Lawson, the reclusive owner of a vineyard.  This interview has been highly sought after by journalists, yet none could obtain it until now.  R.J. Lawson is a billionaire – a computer engineering prodigy who made all of his money in the technology industry.

Upon arrival at the vineyard, Kate has an automobile accident, running her rental car straight into a truck driven by a handsome work hand and maintenance man named Jamie.  After her accident, Jamie sends her off to her interview with a warning that R.J. can be difficult to deal with.  Kate ends up in an argument with R.J. Lawson, essentially failing at her interview, but Jamie and the other employees of the vineyard step in to help her enjoy the rest of her weeklong visit.  Jamie gives her a tour around the vineyard, and this is when things start to become interesting between the two of them.  The two of them have an undeniable attraction for each other.  Although Jamie continues to work very hard while she is there, he makes time for Kate and is focused on her needs.  When the two of them are together, their personalities just seem to spark.  It doesn’t take long for Jamie and Kate to begin developing feelings for each other.  As they start to open their hearts up to one another, Kate begins to realize that Jamie is holding back information about himself.  And then he disappears without a word of explanation.

Nowhere but Here is more than just a contemporary romance.  It is a story of self-discovery – about realizing how much you really do have as an individual, making the best of your own situation, and finding your own place in this world.  In this novel, Renee Carlino focuses on gratitude and healing, the concept of discovering who your family really is, and learning to believe in the power of love.  It is full of underlying lessons which made this love story even more special for me.  It is obvious that Renee Carlino completed some extensive research before writing this novel – research which assisted in making this a unique, creative and interesting story.  If you are looking for a beautifully written contemporary romance, I recommend Nowhere but Here!

About Renée Carlino

Renee Carlino

Renee’s first friends were the imaginary kind and even though her characters haven’t gone away, thankfully the delusions have. She admits she’s a wildly hopeless romantic and she blames 80’s movies starring Molly Ringwald for that. She lives in Southern California with her husband, two sons, and their sweet dog June. When she’s not at the beach with her boys or working on the next book, she likes to spend her time reading, going to concerts, and eating dark chocolate.

Excerpt

Finally he pulls away and looks at me again. His eyes are a little watery, like he’s been crying. “Run away with me.” There’s desperation in his eyes, a silent plea.
I bite down on my lip. “What?”
He sits up and traps my face between his hands. “Run away with me, Lolita. We can start over and I’ll keep you safe. Please tell me you trust me enough to run away with me, like you said to me when we were fourteen. God I wish I would have just done it… Things would have been so different if I just done it back then.” He pulls me against him again, embracing me tightly.
I remember the day my mom died, right before I found her in my dad’s arms in the driveway, I’d suggested to Layton that we run away. I’d never liked the world I grew up in and leaving seemed like such a great idea—still does. I just wish I could permanently leave it all behind.
“Where would we go?” I ask with my face tucked against his chest where I can hear his heart thudding almost violently. I think about Dannie and Mary Lou and how I’m just going to disappear, leaving them to wonder what happened to me. Then there’s Nyjah. I don’t know whether he was with Reagan on blackmailing me or not, but I still wish I could say good-bye. I feel guilty about it, but know in my heart that I can’t go back to Glensdale. Maybe one day, if this all ever settles down. One day.

I hope. I hope. I hope.
Layton swiftly slants back, looking flabbergasted. “You’re seriously considering it? After everything?”
“You know I’m crazy enough.” I try to make a joke but miss the mark badly—it’s been a long time. Not knowing what else to say, I shrug. “I have to run anyway. Might as well be with someone.” I give him the best smile I can summon, but there’s too much darkness in me at the moment to be happy.
He smiles back, but it doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “I know, but I want to make sure.”
I think I’m sure. The last thing I want to do is leave Layton when I just got him back. “Layton, can I ask you a question?”
He nods, this time with confidence. “You can ask me anything.”

He’s a better fighter

A fighter to the core, Hudson Reyes has collected enough battle scars now to last several lifetimes. But after his combat injuries retire him from the life he wasn’t ready to give up, Hudson finds himself spending the carbon copy days of his new career as a Hollywood fight scene and weapons specialist just doing what he knows best: surviving. Until he meets her. The one woman who makes him want to live again. With wounds as deep as his own, she’s a scrappy little thing–an angel-faced paradox that comes as a package deal with an offbeat town of admirably protective, but downright nosy folks.

And a wicked roundhouse kick that’s become intimately familiar with his head.

…but she has all the weapons.

An antique arms authenticator by day and a self-defense instructor by night, Liana Lin has made a living turning the unthinkable demons of her past into the passions that fuel, and fill, her life. So when the unjustly handsome man she’s been unable to stop thinking about literally takes her to the mat with martial arts styles unlike anything she’s ever seen–pinning her with a molten hot stare that melts her like a marshmallow trapped between a graham cracker and a chocolate square–Lia flips into no-holds-barred fight mode. Because if one man could find a way to disarm her carefully-built defenses, it’d be him.

Now if only they could stop sparring long enough to find out…

“Used to be, I could handle a combat weapon with the kind of speed and precision that guys in my unit were gladly willing to trade their left nut for.” A hard edge darkened his expression for a brief moment before fading, softening when his gaze fell on her face again. “After the explosion, discovering that I wouldn’t ever have that level of fine motor control in my trigger hand again, or that I wouldn’t ever be able to fully process the feel of a weapon because of the nerve damage in my other hand…that just about destroyed me.”

He slid his hand over her skin gently. “But this—ˮ

She gasped, gripped the sheets to keep herself grounded mentally, emotionally. To keep her silly heart from acknowledging the fact that he was shattering her defenses with that one simple touch, owning her with the intense, single-minded focus his eyes held as they followed the path his fingers were tracing across her belly. Hungrily. Reverently.

“I thought that was the hardest thing I’d have to get over because of my injuries. But this right here,” he whispered, leaning down to wreck even more havoc on her senses by shadowing his touch with his words, his evil, evil lips only just barely skimming her flesh. “Not being able to do all the things I want to do to you with the pace and precision I want to with this hand…” She stopped breathing when she felt his other palm smooth up the back of her thigh. “And worse, not being able feel you fully with this one…”

“Hell, Lia. That’s killing me more than you can imagine.”

MOORE THAN FOREVER – Book 3
“You have no idea of what you do to me, Baby Girl.”
“It’s smoochal.”

Excerpt
Moore To Lose by Julie A Richman (Book Two: Needing Moore Series)

Damn, this woman could bring him to his knees. There they were – both standing there, naked. Vulnerable. The truth was finally out. And if he was standing there high on the edge of a cliff, he wasn’t standing there alone anymore. Mia had joined him. She was as bold and fearless as she’d always been. This was the Mia Silver with whom he had fallen hopelessly in love.

“We’re going to be ok, Mia,” he reassured her. He wasn’t going to allow himself to believe anything else. He could picture her shaking her head yes on the other end of the phone as he heard her trying to hide her tears. He pictured gently wiping them away with his thumb.

“You promise, Schooner?”

And as always with Mia, making a promise was so damn easy. “I promise, Baby Girl.”

Robin’s Review

Insipid by Christine Brae

What would you do if you realized you were living a lie? Imagine that everything is white, bland. Imagine you just exist; you’re barely going through the motions. What would you be willing to do to bring color back to your world? Could you handle the resulting torrent of emotions? Would you be able to accept this new reality? Or would you deny it? Would you be able to make changes to your life? Author Christine Brae explores these questions and more in her new novel titled Insipid.

At forty-two years old, Jade Richmond has been promoted to a member of the executive team for a Fortune 500 company located in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked extremely hard to achieve success in her career, while also striving to remain ethical in her business practices. To those on the outside, Jade seems to have everything she could ever hope for out of life. But if you could look closely into her expressive green eyes, you would realize Jade is hiding the truth of her reality deep inside.

As a reviewer, I have chosen not to reveal much of the plot due to the way the layers of the story unfold. Instead, I choose to share my thoughts and feelings about Insipid. Christine Brae immediately pulled me into the story. In many ways, I was able to make a connection to the protagonist. I am around the same age as Jade Richmond and have had a successful career at the same company for nearly 25 years. I have been married for over 20 years, and my children are now adults. There have been moments during my life where I have felt I was just going through the motions. I think everyone experiences these types of feelings on occasions, so it was easy for me to step into the pages of the novel and place myself into Jade’s situation.

It is hard to explain the overwhelming feelings that came over me while reading Insipid. I experienced so many different emotions, crying tears of sadness and joy on occasions. There were moments that I felt anger and shock. I was delighted at times, confused at times. But with the confusion came clarity. Although the circumstances surrounding my life helped me connect with the story and protagonist, I also believe this author has strength in the ability to tell a story. Insipid truly has one of the most beautiful endings that I have ever read. I was so impressed with the way that Christine Brae brought closure to Jade Richmond’s story.

Insipid seems to be a combination of the contemporary romance and women’s fiction genres. It does not follow what I consider to be the typical pattern for a romance novel, so you will want to keep this in mind if you choose to read this novel. It is a very unique story, full of wisdom and takeaways. It is also very apparent to me that Christine Brae poured her heart into this novel. Because this story is so different, I realize that it may not be for everyone, but I want people to know that I absolutely enjoyed it! I am giving Christine Brae’s Insipid 5 stars!

Cowgirl Crazy by Becky McGraw *Cover Reveal*

Synopsis

Twyla Taylor is one frustrated cowgirl. She’s not winning at barrel racing or in love. She’s spent ten years nursing a crush on her brother’s best friend, Ryan Easter, who thinks of her as no more than his little sister. When Twyla catches Ryan with yet another no-good buckle bunny, and calls him out, he tells her to get a life, and that is exactly what she decides to do. One that does not include a buckle-bunny-chasing cowboy with a bad attitude, or an overbearing older brother.Ryan Easter is one frustrated cowboy. He’s winning every night at bronc riding, and has a different woman in every city. Mostly so he can keep his best friend’s fiery little sister, and his desire for her, at bay. Since she grew those proud little breasts of hers, and mile-long legs, Ryan has had to fight his attraction to her. If her brother knew what he was thinking, he would kill Ryan, if her daddy didn’t first. Ryan valued the surrogate family the Taylor’s provided him with too much to ever go there with their youngest member.

His diversion techniques work like a charm, until one night he pushes her too far, and Twyla takes off. Ryan knows he has to find her quickly and apologize, or face his best friend’s wrath. He finds Twyla in Dallas and decides she’s definitely gone cowgirl crazy. He barely recognizes her, because his barrel-racing tomboy is wearing makeup that looks like it was put on with a putty knife and she’s working at a bar which borders on a cowgirl strip club. When she isn’t serving shots off of her stomach, she’s shaking her round ass for any man with a dollar to shove into the waistband of her barely-there shorts.

Twyla refuses to leave with him, and Ryan knows he better make his final arrangements, or come up with another way to convince her and fast.

Kristyn’s Review

Cailin is a Jameson through and through. She is feisty and dominant. But she is the last of her family without a mate. She found a potential in Logan, but fights the pull she feels towards him with everything she has.

Logan is waiting not so patiently for Cailin to give in to their potential bond. But when tragedy strikes she comes to him looking for comfort and finds so much more.

This book is a great addition to the Redwood Pack series. It includes all of our favorite characters from books past and wraps up everything nicely. The writing was on par with all of the other books. The cast of characters had a depth and connection akin to real life families. There was humor and sex in nice amounts. The action was exciting and interesting. Fans of the Redwood Pack will rejoice in the conclusion of the big battle that has been developing throughout the series.

But don’t be too sad, there is another book to follow about our beloved Omega.

The Saint by Tiffany Reisz 5- Star Review

The Saint

Synopsis

Before she became Manhattan’s  most famous dominatrix, Nora Sutherlin was merely a girl called Eleanor…

Rebellious, green-eyed Eleanor never met a rule she didn’t want to break. She’s sick of her mother’s zealotry and the confines of Catholic school, and declares she’ll never go to church again. But her first glimpse of beautiful, magnetic Father Marcus Stearns—Søren to her and only her—and his lust-worthy Italian motorcycle is an epiphany. Eleanor is consumed—yet even she knows being in love with a priest can’t be right.

But when one desperate mistake nearly costs Eleanor everything, it is Søren who steps in to save her. When she vows to repay him with complete obedience, a whole world opens before her as he reveals to her his deepest secrets that will change everything.

Danger can be managed—pain, welcomed.  Everything is about to begin.

5 Star Read

Robin’s Review

The Saint is the fifth novel of The Original Sinners series written by author Tiffany Reisz. The Saint is also the first novel of The White Yearsportion of the series, following the previously published novels of The Red Years: The Siren, The Angel, The Prince and The Mistress. The Red Years revolve around more recent events for Nora Sutherlin, including her career as an author of erotica novels and the most notorious Dominatrix of The Underground. The White Yearswill take readers back to a time prior to the events of The Siren. We are given a glimpse of Nora Sutherlin from the ages 15 through 20 in The Saint, when she was known as Eleanor Schreiber.

Eleanor Schreiber is already jaded and hurting at age 15, feeling unwanted by both of her parents. Eleanor lives with her mother in Wakefield, Connecticut. Her mother has always wanted to become a nun, and Nora feels responsible for her not being able to realize her dream. Her father owns a chop shop and is involved in criminal dealings, so Nora is rarely allowed to spend time with him. Although Eleanor is enrolled in a Catholic school, she doubts the existence of God. She feels the Catholic Church is hypocritical, and decides she no longer wants to attend Sacred Heart. Her mother bribes her into attending Sunday Mass by telling her they now have a handsome new priest who owns a Ducati motorcycle. On that fateful day, Eleanor attends Mass where she meets and falls in love with Father Marcus Stearns.

In The Saint, readers will learn more about Kingsley’s son, Nico. Nora narrates the events of the novel to Nico in a series of flashbacks to explain her relationship with Soren and Kingsley. Be prepared to be held captive by a mystery while reading this novel! Tiffany Reisz will have you guessing at what could possibly be happening from the beginning to the very end.

The Saint is now my overwhelming favorite novel of The Original Sinners series! Tiffany Reisz has done a wonderful job of capturing the personality of a teenage Nora Sutherlin. I absolutely enjoyed watching the relationship develop between Soren and Eleanor. It was very obvious that Soren and Eleanor both felt a connection from the moment they met. Soren knew what she would one day become to him – the perfect woman and submissive. If you have not started this series, I highly recommend it! Tiffany Reisz has developed such interesting characters and weaves a fantastic story throughout the entire series. Five outstanding stars for The Saint!

Author Bio

tiffanyTiffany Reisz lives in Lexington, Kentucky with her boyfriend and two cats (one that may or may not be the Anti-Christ). She graduated with a B.A. in English from Centre College in Danville, Kentucky and is making both her parents and her professors proud by writing erotica under her real name.

Tiffany has six piercings, one tattoo, and has been arrested twice. When not under arrest, Tiffany enjoys Latin Dance, Latin Men, and Latin Verbs. She dropped out of a conservative southern seminary in order to pursue her dream of becoming a smut peddler. Johnny Depp’s aunt was her fourth grade teacher. There is little to nothing interesting about her.

If she couldn’t write, she would die.
