Judging a Book by it’s Cover:
Nondescript is the word that comes to mind when looking at this cover. Bland, even. Shirtless male again solid, plain background. Nothing to make it stand out and catch the eye. The synopsis was what caught my interest.
Looking Deeper:
Andrew is the perfect combination of brother’s best friend and unofficial foster or step-brother. Jenna had been half in love with him before her parents even took him in to live with them. A weekend of weakness five years ago was the only time they’d given in to the forbidden and never spoke of it again. But some passion burn too hot to be smothered. The secondary characters are just as important in the story as the leads, with terrific dialogue and interaction. With the chemistry burning this bright, it makes me wonder how her brothers and Emily never caught on. But his fears and her insecurities tend to hold them both back until it’s almost too darn late. The plot is pretty good, considering the short length of the book. The ease of flow was fantastic, I was able to read it in one sitting without needing to step away from it for a break. The conflicts were there, but they managed to work them out. Predictability was low. The conclusion wraps up well enough, but I did find myself disappointed in not knowing the reactions of her brothers and what became of the house after all. Even though this is a holiday novella inserted into an already-begun series (which I’d NOT read the first book of), I felt it was able to stand on it’s own quite well and I believe that the epilogue hinted at which player would receive the next book in the series. Overall, it was a hot little holiday number that made a quick, steamy read.

Off Limits by Kelly Jamieson is my first official holiday romance review.  This book can be read as a regular romance in the Aces Hockey Series, as a stand alone romance, or a stand alone holiday romance.  Whatever reason you choose this book it is guaranteed to delight. It’s the perfect holiday novella to start the season.

Andrew and Jenna have always secretly had a thing for one another but know that a real kind of relationship is Off Limits.  Andrew has been unofficially adopted or claimed by the McFadden family.  Through friendship and brotherhood, Andrew has become a family member.  Going home for Christmas is joyful in many ways but also dreadful in many ways.  He’s become a successful professional hockey player and lived up to his family’s high hopes.  But beneath the surface he is still the boy that wants their approval.  He has always been hopelessly in love with their daughter/ sister , Jenna. Jenna is everything he wants in a woman.  She loves her family fiercely, is dedicated to those she loves, and embraces every moment, especially the holidays, with gusto.  He wants to be a part of every holiday experience but it’s hard standing on the sidelines.  This Christmas she is bringing another man home.  It is going to be pure hell.

Fate has a way of getting it’s way.  Jenna and Andrew were meant to be together.  This holiday Andrew and Jenna are going to get their wish.  I think all of the McFadden clan are going to be pleased.

Kelly Jamieson wrote a delightful holiday romance that leaves you with a big smile and warm heart.  The Aces Hockey Series is off to a fantastic start!

Max Savage glanced across the lush green lawn of Gabriel and Isabelle Dare’s Bedford, New York, home, his gaze focused on the sexy brunette he couldn’t get out of his head. Lucy Dare, dressed in a conservative pants suit, her luxurious dark hair pulled into a bun, stood beside her date, a Hollywood director who was a douchebag of the first order.

The last time Max had seen Lucy, she’d been her wild and free self. Then she’d hooked up with that guy and she’d changed. And not in a good way. He wanted fun, sexy Lucy back.

“How badly do you want to punch that guy’s teeth in?”

“So badly,” Max muttered, then glanced over, realizing the question came from Lucy’s brother, Decklan Dare.

Max shook his head and changed his answer, because it would do no good to let his best friend know he was obsessing over the guy’s little sister. He’d kept it to himself for years, partially as an excuse to deny what he really wanted, but regardless, this wasn’t the right time to bring up the issue.

“Who do you mean?” Max asked.

Decklan rolled his eyes. “Oh, come on. I know you hate that Spielberg wannabe as much as we do.”

“Can’t say he’d be my first choice for your sister.”

“That’s rich considering it’s your fault she’s with him to begin with.” Decklan eyed Max with distinct annoyance in his gaze.

“How the hell do you figure that?” Max asked.

Decklan’s older brother, Gabe, joined them, and from the look on his face, he’d clearly caught the tail end of the conversation.

“Face it, Savage. We know you have a thing for Lucy,” Gabe said.

Just how the brothers had gleaned that bit of knowledge was beyond Max. Nobody had a better poker face than him.

Decklan merely nodded in agreement.

“You didn’t take your chance last time she was in town, and now she’s with that asshole,” Gabe added, angling his head toward where his sister stood with Lucas Kellan.

“Well, fuck.” Max wasn’t about to deny what had clearly been more obvious than he’d intended.

Both Dare brothers narrowed their gazes on him, waiting for an explanation.

“What? I didn’t think you’d approve, and I wasn’t about to mess up years’ worth of friendship if you didn’t.” He was sticking to the tried-and-true excuse he’d told himself for years. In reality, Max had his reasons for staying away from

Lucy for so long and for fucking up more than just his life in the process. But they were his, and he wouldn’t be sharing them.

“The only way you’d compromise friendships would be if you used or hurt my sister. If your intentions are honorable, I have no issue,” said Gabe, the man who’d raised Lucy after their parents died in a car accident.

Max glanced at Decklan. They both knew Max’s recent past. He’d married young, lost his wife, Cindy, in a car accident, and had a subsequent lack of serious relationships since. What Decklan didn’t know was the guilt Max harbored over the emotions he hadn’t been able to give his wife, due to the feelings he’d always had for Lucy. Hell, he’d married Cindy because he didn’t have those intense feelings, and everyone had paid a price.

Max shifted uncomfortably and cleared his throat and glanced at Decklan, who, like Gabe, was extremely protective of his sister. “You too? You’re okay with this?” he asked.

His best friend shrugged. “Well, you’re an asshole but you’re our asshole.” He slapped Max on the back, his expression sobering. “Look, Cindy died four years ago, and you haven’t been with anyone seriously since.”

Neither one of them mentioned Max’s penchant for sex clubs on the weekends. It had been a way to fill the emptiness inside him, nothing more.

“But Gabe is right,” Decklan said. “I see how you look at Lucy. You should do something about it if your intentions are solid.”

They finally were. For years Max had denied his need for Lucy and the emotional bond he knew they would share if they took things to the next level. Fear had driven him. Now Max was finally ready to go after the woman he’d always wanted.

“Just don’t blow it or we will have an issue,” Decklan cheerfully added.

Max didn’t need to be told twice. He made his way across the lawn and veered between guests, coming up to where Lucy and her date stood by the bar.

Her hands caught mine and stilled it in place, not letting me go any farther, but not pushing me away either. She was very conflicted; that much was certain—the look in her eyes, the way she worried her bottom lip with her teeth. And it would work to my benefit, I was sure. Stirred is the first book I have read by Nancy S. Thompson.  She’s a fairly new author and her previous titles have been in the thriller / mystery genre. I was intrigued with  the synopsis of Stirred.  I love a good dark thriller romance and was excited to dive into this book. Stirred met my high expectations and went beyond what I was hoping for.  I was glued to the pages.  The plot was well executed.  I was mystified until the final revelation/ scene played out.  By that time I was completely floored.  It was brilliant.

The book starts out in an unusual way that instigates suspicions from the beginning. The story is told through Eden McLaird’s POV.  It starts when she is an impressionable young woman that has experienced a devastating tragedy.  She is easily manipulated.  At this point in her life she has no desire to battle her grief and become a stronger person.  Time has a way of taking care of a person’s mind and heart.  The book fast forwards to twenty years later.

Eden has become a stronger person in many ways.  Her heart has healed.  She has moved on in life and became a professional, a good wife, and a good mother.  She has a successful career as an owner of a prestigious school.  She has also pursued her dreams from her youth to become a published  author.  On paper her life looks perfect.  To most people, including her friends, her life looks perfect.  Appearances can be deceptive.  She’s regretting some of her choices twenty years ago.  She is in an unhappy marriage and will remain in that marriage no matter what.  At least that is what she believes until she meets a young man that changes her views on life.

What starts out as a seduction game for Sean Bennett quickly turns into a real quest of the heart.  Although a relationship with a married woman isn’t something he wanted, he can’t turn his back on Eden.

The stakes are high.  They are both being manipulated.  Someone is out to destroy Eden and Sean is merely a pawn.  Who is out to destroy Eden?  Why do they want to destroy a good caring woman? Can Eden survive another heartbreak that may lead to the ultimate grief and devastation? It may lead to her death.

The answers are there between the lines in this sizzling hot erotic romance.  The answers will come as a complete surprise.

Judging a Book by it’s Cover: Another busy, colorful cover. Skyline at dusk or dawn shown below two fully-clothed men arranged on opposite sides above. Synopsis is interesting, yet vague enough to need more. I’m not a fan of this series’ covers, but thankfully I’m willing to NOT judge a book by it’s cover.

Looking Deeper:
Trigger Warning: Scenes of past Child Molestation / Sexual Abuse of a Minor revisited as flashbacks and retellings: Not graphic, but enough to make you fully aware of what happened with no lingering doubt.
First-person POV from alternating perspectives.
Trace is attracted to the cowboy who just moved next door with a very pregnant woman at his side. He’s not a home wrecker, so he tries to bury his feelings for Luke, up until Luke kisses him one morning. Luke’s an outstanding, selfless man… he was willing to quit his job on the ranch and take time off from the rodeo circuit to see Ava through school, her pregnancy and the upcoming baby. Loyalty and Honor is tested when Attraction and Emotion tempts and tries even the most stubborn of men. Miscommunications and a hellava lot of baggage on all ends are brought to the table in this one. Both lead men are likeable in their quirks, attributes and flaws. Their chemistry is magnetic. We’ve met several of the secondary characters in “The Marine in Unit A”, but there are a few new characters in play. Dialogue and interaction are very good and feel natural. The plot is very good and the flow is smooth and fluid. There were some conflicts, but they were quickly resolved – sometimes almost too quickly. Predictability was rather low, only one key point was predicted, but it did not really detract from the story. The conclusion is solid for out main characters and provides an exciting glimpse into the third book the series and I cannot friggin’ wait for it!!! I love the residents of Mockingbird Place & the newest resident’s got me scratching my head, but I imagine his story will eventually unfold for us. I’m hoping Tony gets a story soon, too! Yes, I recommend the series. Smokin’ hot and smart men who are not afraid to expose their feelings or get in touch with their emotional side. Well done, again, Mr. Cook! I look forward to the next book – impatiently!
