I can’t make out her form until I’m halfway down to the water. She sits on the dock, feet dangling above the water. She’s so fucking beautiful and innocent and I want to ruin her and worship her all at the same time. I’m not going to do either of those things, though. I’m going to stick to the path. The path doesn’t include dating. The path doesn’t even include fun most days and Gabby deserves days that are all about fun.

She turns her head as I get closer and there’s that big Gabby smile pointed right at me. “Hey.”

“Hey, yourself. Whatcha doing down here all alone?”

“I thought we could cross skinny dipping off both our lists.”

My brows raise. “What about your tattoo?”

She shrugs. “It’s been a week. I’m willing to risk a quick dip if you are.”

I rub a hand over my chin. I’m not ashamed of my body, but I’d also prefer not to have my black ass photographed if one of my teammates happen to stumble upon us. Last year one of the sophomores got drunk at a party and passed out naked in the bathroom. I have no idea why he was naked in there, but the photos of his hairy ass were everywhere. My ass is baby smooth and awesome, but I still don’t want it on display.

“Well, come on before someone sees us.” She’s unbuttoning her shorts and pushing them down while I stand there gawking. The sight of her bare legs puts me in motion. Just not a part of me I want in motion right now. I turn around, give my dick a little pep talk that includes promises I won’t be a celibate asshole forever, and then undress to my boxers.

“You decent?” I ask over my shoulder.

“No. Oh my God, don’t look.” She laughs, I hear her footsteps on the dock and then a splash. A few seconds later, she calls, “Your turn.”

I push my boxers down and then hold my hands over my junk, semi-erect still because promises be damned, and take two large steps before jumping in beside her. Her happy squeals direct my entry into the lake as I clear the water from my eyes. We’re treading water buck naked not two feet from one another. It’s a little trippy. I haven’t spent time with a girl naked like this in… well forever. If I’m naked and this close to a girl, it’s for one purpose and though I’m a gentleman, of course, it’s not about anything but carnal desires being met. Thrusts and grunts and release.

I don’t think it would be like that with Gabby. No, I know it wouldn’t be like that, which is another reason it can’t happen.

“So now what?” she asks, suddenly looking a little nervous.

“Far as I know, this is all there is to it. How do you feel?”

“Naked.” She laughs. “But also like a rebel.”

She splashes water at me playfully and I do it right back.

“Think anyone can see us?”

I shrug. “Maybe. Do you want them to see you?”

“God, no,” she says too fast. The excitement in her eyes is a dead giveaway. I think Gabby likes the thrill, the possibility of being caught, and God help me because I want nothing more than to keep her safe while she explores every sordid fantasy.

Michel’s Review

The Tip-Off by Rebecca Jenshak is the third book in the Smart Jocks series, a New Adult Sports Romance series. This is the first book I have read by the author , I quickly backtracked and read the first two books in the series. I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed all three books. The Tip-Off can easily be read as a stand alone novel but has so much more flavoring after reading the first two books in the series. The series is based on the solidity of coed friendships as well as the camaraderie of teammates.

Zac and Gabby have been screaming for their own book and Rebecca has delivered. This adorable couple will capture the heart. Zac has been focused on going pro in basketball all through his college career. His laser focus has left little time for light hearted fun and romance until he met Gabby. Gabby is the kind of girl who values friendship, love, and life. She has had her own set of hoops to conquer and jump through to reach her personal agenda. Together these two find there is more to life than specific goals or tasks. Together they find their true hearts.

The thing I loved most about this book was perspective. Two individuals growing beyond the limitations they set for themselves. Together they found how to win the best game of all- the game of a life filled with love.

This was a sweet, somewhat predictable romance that completely entertained me in the best possible way. I would highly recommend the Smart Jock Series. The Tip-Off was my favorite book in the series.

Wow… Wow… Wow… The Heartache Duet is my 2019 Favorite!

The Heartache Duet by Jay McLean is one of those stories which stands out among other the releases in the romance and YA genres. It is more than an angsty mature YA romance, it’s a story of family, friendship, and the beauty of the human spirit. It’s a story about dealing with heartache and circumstances beyond our control without losing hope. A story where basic human compassion goes much further than grand gestures. A story that shows the magic in the little moments is just as important as the monumental steps that change our lives. After all … the magic appears when the world seems the darkest but it also appears when it’s least expected.

First and Forever by Jay McLean is the highly emotional, explosive conclusion in the Heartache and Hope Duet.

Heartache and Hope ended on a huge cliffhanger. Ava and Connor had broken up. Connor was conquering the basketball court and chasing his dream. He has became an All American Allstar athlete, gotten a full ride scholarship to Duke, and has scouts knocking on his doors. He’s pushed himself beyond his limits, not for himself but for Ava. He wants to be able to give her the help her family desperately needs. He wants to be able to provide a future for both of them. But first he needs to win Ava back and show her she isn’t alone.

Ava was trying to hold onto what was left of her family life. The responsibility of caring for her mother has become more difficult. Her mother’s mental health is affecting her physical health. Ava and Connor have a love that’s worth fighting for. They have both suffered. They have both learned a little bit of magic in the darkest moments goes a long way. But is it enough to keep them together? Just when they think they have it figured out, Ava’s mom takes a turn for the worst and her world begins to fall apart. She’s afraid she will take Connor down with her. At the same time, Connor’s nightmares and past have resurfaced. rather than leaning on Ava or his family for support, he tries to handle the situation by himself.

They are both getting torn apart emotionally and don’t know how to cope with it. Their lives have spiraled out of control once again. This time they can’t fix it. Graduation is around the corner and Ava’s life has hit the dead end.

Can they find their way back to each other? Their family lives and secrets will never go away. They just need to learn how to manage their lives with what they have. They have to learn that love is what keeps hope alive.

Wow… the Heartache Duet by Jay McLean is one of the best stories I have read in quite awhile. Not only does Jay deliver an emotional, heart wrenching romance but she also focuses on important issues and how they affect people’s lives. She brought attention to ongoing problems in healthcare for seriously wounded VETs, the lack of support from the community, the limited long term medical benefits, and the inadequate care for mental health issues. She also showed how child abuse can scar a person for life even though they have had a stable home, supportive family love, and the right kind of counseling. She also showed how people make sacrifices for their families. Trevor and Connor’s father both put their families first over their own personal happiness. They were true heroes in my opinion. Not only did Jay show the emotional effects it had on the family but also their friends. The Heartache and Hope Duet displayed every kind of love a human being can experience and that is where the true MAGIC is.

I highly recommend The Heartache and Hope Duet.

I was sitting there, chuckling and shaking my head, when I felt someone come up next to me and pat me on the arm.

I looked up and to my right to see Caitlyn, one of the Delta groupies, standing there with an armful of clothes and a smile.

“Hey, Ridge, how’s it going?” she asked.

My eyes flitted to the closed dressing room door, before coming back to rest on Caitlyn. We’d hooked up a couple times, but when she’d tried to move us toward a relationship, I’d quickly put a stop to it.

A mental picture of Karrie popped in my head, but I ignored it. Karrie and I would never work. First of all, she was hung up on her asshole ex, and second of all, she was simply a means to an end.

Not at all girlfriend material.

Guilt slammed through me at that stray thought, but I ignored it and answered the girl hovering over me.

“Can’t complain,” I answered, intentionally not continuing the conversation in hopes that she’d get the hint and leave me alone.

I looked back down at my phone.

“I heard Delta’s planning a rager for after Homecoming … something about making over girls into the perfect Delta groupies. Crush should have asked me to come be an example, not Bella. I’ve been hanging with Deltas for the last four years,” she continued with a pout.

I sighed and brought my gaze back up to her face.

“It was Crush’s deal, Caitlyn, I’m not involved in his shit.”

She smirked and replied, “That’s not what I heard. Word on the street is you picked a girl for a makeover, too. Drake’s girl.”

“Word on the street?” I scoffed, standing up and stretching, and shooting her a bored expression. “Your source is wrong. Karrie is more to me than a game Crush is playing with the rushes. And, she’s not Drake’s girl … She’s mine.”

Just then, the changing room door swung open, and Karrie walked out wearing a tight-fitting tube dress that showed off her curves, leaving little to the imagination. By the sweet grin on her face, and the way she crossed to me and put her arm around my waist, tucking into my side, I knew she’d heard everything Caitlyn and I had said.

“Hey, babe,” she cooed, pulling me tight. “I hope I’m not taking too long.”

I looked down at her upturned face and felt my heart accelerate.

“You’re worth the wait,” I said softly, my eyes falling to her lips as I remembered our kiss.

“Aww, you’re so sweet,” Karrie said, turning her attention to Caitlyn and repeating, “Isn’t he so sweet?”

“The sweetest,” Caitlyn replied, her tone implying I was anything but.

“And you are?” Karrie asked, one hand resting on my abs, causing me to flex.

“Caitlyn.”

“Hi, Caitlyn, I’m Karrie, Ridge’s girlfriend.”

I would have laughed at the shocked look on Caitlyn’s face, but I was too busy enjoying the feel of Karrie’s hand on me. I found myself wishing there was no barrier between that hand and my bare skin.

Caitlyn recovered and let out a disbelieving laugh.

“Ridge doesn’t date,” she said, like she knew the first fucking thing about me.

“Well, that’s obviously not true.”

Caitlyn looked to me, as if expecting me to prove her right and call Karrie a liar.

Instead I wrapped my arms around her and kissed the top of her head.

“I never saw a reason to date, then I met Karrie.”

Caitlyn’s eyes narrowed, and I knew she was pissed, like I’d just said she wasn’t good enough for me.

Which, honestly, was true.

For fans of the Jock Hard series by Sara Ney, the Switch Bidder novella won’t disappoint. It’s fun, snarky, and super sexy! No wonder girls fall all over themselves when a baseball player enters a room.

Piper’s best friend won Ryder Williams for her in a fraternity charity auction. Ryder was supposed to do domestic duties/ cleaning for the winner. Piper has no intention on collecting his debt. When she’s force to face Ryder she lets him off the hook. Rather than running the other way Ryder wants to perform his duties and so much more. He has been wanting to get his hands on Piper for quite some time.

Not going to say much more except both Piper and Ryder have great big smiles thanks to Sara Ney. She gave them a red hot happily ever after.

This novella is the perfect quick read for the summer!

They look like fireflies. The way the water falls from the sky, illuminated only by the streetlamps.

I stand in the middle of the road, barefoot and barely breathing, my arms out, face to the sky.

I don’t know how I got here.

When I climbed out of my window, the sun was just setting and now… now I’m surrounded by

dark skies and false hope.

I know I should go home.

That I should face my fears and tackle them head-on.

My mind travels the right roads at the right time to get me there, but my heart…

What the hell are you doing?”

His warm palms meet my soaking wet elbows, and then his entire body is cocooning mine,

lifting me off my feet and into his bedroom. My feet land on his soft carpet, and I look down at the mess I’ve made.

“I’m dirty,” I tell him.

Inside and out.

Dirty, dazed and damaged.

It’s been a good long while since Jay McLean released a new book and her readers missed her. She’s back with an emotional mature YA novel that will leave the reader hungover and desperately wanting more. Heartache and Hope by Jay McLean takes the reader on an emotional journey that has them sobbing one moment and feeling pure joy the next. Two young people dealing with life the only way they know how. Appearances aren’t always what they seem. What lies beneath the surface is what matters the most.

Connor Ledger is the new superstar basketball player that just transferred to St. Lukes Academy on an athletic scholarship. His family moved so he would have a better opportunity of securing a basketball scholarship to a good college. A college that will help him get into the NBA. His family is not exactly poor but they are financially strained. His single father has raised him and spent every extra penny on improving his natural gift in basketball. Not only does he have to perform well on the basketball court but also has to make good grades to build up his GPA. His father has high expectations and expects him to make it to the “end game”.

Ava Diaz is the mysterious gorgeous girl that everyone avoids. She seems to have warning signs written all over her. And she does for very valid reasons. She doesn’t have the time or energy for high school social life. She doesn’t have time for friends much less a boyfriend. When the new boy in school tries to befriend her it’s very hard to resist until she can’t. It’s hard to keep the preverbial private door closed when it’s so lonely living behind those doors. Everyone needs someone outside their preverbial private door to make their world bearable. Someone to give them hope.

It appears Connor Ledger has the world in his hands but underneath it all he’s a scarred soul.

It appears Ava Diaz is a scarred soul who hates the world when in reality she’s just a teenage girl that needs to be a teenager rather than a prisoner in her life.

Connor’s father and his basketball commitments come first. His head is telling him one thing but his heart is screaming for something else.

Ava’s world behind closed doors is falling apart and she’s trying to hang onto what little bit is left. It’s taking all the broken pieces of her heart and shattering them into tiny bits that can never be repaired.

“When the world is at its darkest, thats when magic appears.” Connor and Ava desperately need a little magic in their lives.

Magic doesn’t always appear where we expect it but it does appear when Jay McLean picks up pen and starts writing. She is a gifted storyteller with compelling characters that touch the deepest part of the soul. She challenges her readers with thought provoking situations and emotional dilemmas. She takes ordinary people and makes them larger in life by testing their souls and allowing them to grow. Her writing is pure MAGIC and keeps the readers under her spell !

Jay McLean created two unforgettable characters that need hope in their world. I loved the supportive secondary characters just as much. Ava’s stepbrother Trevor is such an honorable guy and made sacrifices most young men would not make. I would love to see Jay create a story for him after the Heartache Duet is finished because Ava and Connor are not the only people who had their hope stifled.

I loved every magical moment reading Heartache and Hope by Jay McLean. I can’t wait for the second book, First and Forever, to release on July 12, 2019!
