Synopsis:

From the bestselling author of Just Remember to Breathe and The Last Hour, a shocking and poignant story of a family on the brink of destruction and the transformational events that could bring them back together—or tear them apart.

Every day, Cole Roberts reminds himself that life wasn’t always this bleak. He was once passionately in love with Erin. Sam used to be an artistic and lively kid. They hadn’t always lived in a shabby two-room house in rural Alabama, where he runs a mediocre restaurant in the middle of nowhere.

That was before Brenna disappeared. It was before Cole lost his job and they lost their home.
Every day it gets worse. Erin drinks wine out of the bottle and spends her days with a tormented expression, searching the web for signs of their daughter. Sam hides in his room and rarely speaks. And Cole works himself to a stupor for a paycheck a fraction of the size of his old salary.

Until one day a phone call changes everything.

Winter Flower is at once a tragic tale of the disappearance of a child; struggling with gender identity; of the dark world of sex-trafficking and the transformation and healing of a family. Sheehan-Miles’s longest novel delves into the depths of family life—and how, sometimes, we can heal and find restoration.

*** 2019 Favorite ***

I was so excited when I saw that Charles Sheehan-Miles had a new book coming out.

Charles Sheehan-Miles is one of the best authors I have read. He has an incredible gift of creating characters who the readers immediately embrace as their own. His stories revolve around the family unit with all of the beautiful imperfections and emotional dysfunctions. He captures the reader’s attention with his astute choice of words and vivid descriptions. The reader becomes more than a mere witness to story unraveling, they become an emotional participant.

The story of the Robert’s family is more than losing a child. It’s a journey down the darkest paths while realizing the light isn’t necessarily at the end. The light comes from depending on each other and accepting the things they cannot change. The only thing that matters is their love for one another. It may not fix what’s been broken but it will soothe and strengthen their shattered souls. It will give them courage to move forward one step at a time.

Winter Flower follows each member of the family, switching from past to present. Each member of the family has a different perspective of the past and different way of coping in the present. It all began with the disappearance of their daughter, Brenna. Brenna disappeared on her sixteenth birthday. What should have been a special birthday turned into a horrific nightmare which would destroy their lives. What they didn’t realize was their lives were already on the path of destruction. Brenna’s disappearance was the final blow that tore their world apart. Two years later they are on a very different path trying to survive and rebuild their shattered lives. The only thing they are hanging onto is their tiny thread of hope.

It all begins in a small backward rural town in Alabama. Cole Roberts is working at a Waffle House. He’s struggling to pay the bills and take care of his family after the loss of his daughter. He not only lost his daughter but also his home, his career and six figure salary. His wife has moved from resentment to pure indifference to him. She has chosen the wine bottle to silence her grief. His son Sam has become withdrawn and spends too much time locked away in his room playing computer games. He has become an awkward social recluse and a target for the bullies in his new school. In a sense he has also become a missing child even though he’s physically present. Brenna has been missing for two years and the FBI has moved it to the cold case stack. The only thing they have left is their hope.

Then one day the phone rings with a new lead that finally changes their paths once again. The biggest difference this time is they are walking into the darkness with their eyes wide open. At least they are together with the knowledge they may never find the light. They just need to hang onto each other along the way.

Charles Sheehan-Miles was brutally honest and delivered the harsh realities of this story’s life situations and circumstances. He didn’t sugar coat the ugliness, he made the reader truly feel it. At the same time he instilled hope and clearly illuminated the goodness dwelling below the surface. Although this story had a horrific situation it also had a beautiful message. The resilience of the human soul with the capacity to love, accept, and forgive is what hope truly is.

Winter Flower was more than a novel to be witnessed by the reader. Winter Flower demands the reader become an emotional participant from beginning to end. Long after the last word is read and the book is closed, the reading experience will live on in the heart of the reader.

I highly recommend reading Winter Flower by Charles Sheehan-Miles.

Excerpt

I pull my hand away slowly, leaving all the feelings we were developing behind in

the palm of his hand. “The timing is wrong.”

“Bullshit!”

Startled, I jump in my seat.

Lowering his voice, he says, “That’s a cop out. I know you feel something for me.

I see how you react because I also feel it when I’m around you. There’s something here

and you’re just scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“Scared to have a life without Cory and thinking you have to justify it to others.

The problem with that is that when you start justifying it, it will make you feel like your

love for Cory was less. It wasn’t. It’s just different. He’s not here, Rochelle.”

“Stop it. Stop talking about Cory and take me home.”

“Now you want to stop talking about him?” He looks surprised. “I can’t win with

you when it comes to him.” He shifts the car into drive.

“This is not a competition, Dex.”

Disappointment slides onto his face. “Then why is he being shoved in my face

every time we make a move?”

“This is one of the reasons why we won’t work. We see things very differently.”

“One of the reasons? Name another because from where I sit, we fit like two

puzzle pieces clicking together.”

“You’re a supposed recovering addict. You have sex with anyone who offers.

“That’s it. Right there. You play like you know who I am, but you don’t. That’s

why the lies are so easily believed. I can tell what you’re doing. You’re giving me an out

that I don’t want. You’re allowing yourself to believe the worst about me to ease your

conscience, but it won’t—”

“You know what? Not everything is about you and your past. You lost a band

mate and friend, but I lost my soulmate!”

And you don’t get to choose who you fall in love with.

The minute he opened his sexy mouth, Holliday Hughes should have known Jack Dalton was trouble. His smooth pickup lines, broad shoulders, and ridiculously handsome face charmed her right out of her clothes. She gave into her desires, the instant attraction blinding her to the obvious.

One night. That was all it took for Holliday’s world to be flipped on its axis. Jack Dalton was cocky. Smug. Volatile. Demanding. He ignited something deep inside her like no other, but there was something more to this brooding bad boy. There was a dark side to him she couldn’t help but be drawn to.

Torn between what she knew about him and a mysterious side he tried to hide, could she walk away or was he simply too hard to resist?

5 starMichel’s Review

The Redemption by S.L. Scott is a spinoff of The Resistance.  It features two of the supporting characters from that book.  Readers were begging for their stories.  The readers got a bonus.  S.L. Scott gave these two dynamic characters their story.  She gave them each other.  Woohoo!  The Redemption was everything I hoped for and more.

We met Rochelle Floros in the previous book, The Resistance.  She has been a part of the Resistance from the beginning.  She was one of the co founders of the band.  She helped put the group together, help write the music, taught them expertise with their guitars, and found the right members to add to the group.  She chose not to be a performing member of the band.  She chose to work in the background managing their business affairs, coordinating tours, and helping in the studios.  She is a master musician in her own right.  She is the glue that keeps the band successful. When the devastating loss of one of the members, her soulmate, happens, Rochelle has to face a new reality in life.  She is a single mother now and raising two young boys.  Every choice she will make in life will have to alter around what is best for her sons.  Yet she is still a young woman with a lot of life and love ahead of her.  Once she is past the initial pain and grieving, she is finding that she has needs that don’t include her sons.  She also wants companionship that will blend into her life with her boys.  She is managing a fast paced stressful career, learning to be a mother and father, and finding the new woman she is becoming.  She’s learning to live with her loss and learning to live again.

Dex Caggiano is the bad boy drummer from the Resistance.  He is known for his partying, womanizing, and drug addictions.  He has walked a very fine line with the band for the past few years.  He has lost their respect and trust.  He is slowly earning it back one step at a time, just like beating his addictions.  The one thing that has been solid since the beginning of the band is his love and respect for Rochelle Floros.  She brought him into The Resistance.  She shared his love for music.  She saw the side of him that most people never would believe was beneath the surface.  Now that Cory is gone, he wants to give Rochelle and her boys the happiness they deserve.

These two people will come together is a very special way.  They will find a love that is just as special as the once in a lifetime love Rochelle thought she experienced.  They will help each other grieve and begin to live again.  They will help each other find themselves again. They will find their family bonds go beyond the bonds from the Resistance.

I loved this book.  It is a beautiful story of healing and learning how to live life to the fullest .  It is about reaching out and taking someone’s hand.  It is about friendship, passion, and trust.  Two unlikely people will find a love that is beyond special.

Tina’s Review

Each novella is only about 100 pages. Although short, they are full of enough content to make each one a satisfying story. Each seems to focus on one or both persons seeking an escape from a past hurt by starting a new life in a small town and/or second chances. The town’s characters are very well written and introduced throughout the books where you begin to feel as though you know everyone in town without being overwhelmed. The dialogue and interaction between them is wonderful. SMOLDER was fairly predictable in several key areas, but was still a good read. SPARK was mildly predictable. Each had a decent conclusion, if not a little quick to end.
** Warning: Sexual content may be considered distasteful to some readers.

Yes, he has a rockin’ hot bod’, the manners of a southern gentleman and the sex may be amazing but she can’t help feeling that the similarities Stephen shares with Cole may be too much for her to deal with.

Tina’s Review

The novellas in this book are also about 100 pages each. I would suggest reading SMOKIN’ HOT prior to this. The characters’ stories continue from the last trilogy & further expand. The characters are still as warm and wonderful to get to know as in the first trilogy book. The plots are pleasantly full for being so short. But, as often the case with novellas, the conflict/resolution feels to simple and easy and the endings can feel a little rushed. Enjoyable short stories where many of the characters arrive in Lanville looking for a fresh start in life or a second chance at love.
** Warning: Sexual content may contain scenes that are offensive to some readers.

~ FIERY ~

Now, if he could only get to the heart of it and break down those walls…

Paige Denslow works at Spencer’s, a convenient store with gas station and mechanic bays that Clay, the volunteer fire department’s Chief, owns. Daydreaming of a man of her own, one with very specific attributes, she never expected Cort Brennaman to appear as if conjured by her fantasies. He’s arrived in Lanville seeking the open Chef position at Cafe’ Crystal as part of his cover.

Some loves can’t be… Crushed

Morgan
Have you ever done something stupid? Like get drunk and hookup with a guy because your heart was broken by someone else? Like his best friend. And then done something really dumb, like fall in love with your hookup? Hookups aren’t stick-around guys. I’m hoping Dakota will be different. But hoping has gotten me in trouble before.

Dakota
The absolute last girl I want to see in my court-ordered alcohol and drug information school, the girl who landed me here in the first place, walks in. After we hooked up, I thought I’d gotten Morgan out of my system. So why is my pulse racing? I can’t afford to screw up right now. I know I should avoid her. Morgan has a way of messing up my life. But she’s the only one who understands.

Morgan

Alcohol is a big, fat liar. It seduces you with its charm and then whispers sweet lies, like, You look really hot doing a keg stand in a skirt that shows off your butt cheeks and new pink thong. Totally forgetting that you have the flattest butt on the planet. And it’s impossible to back arch in that position to accentuate your butt’s very few positives.

Or, Yeah, scooping jam directly from the jar with your bare hands and slathering it on your face in an attempt to find your mouth is really going to impress the house guy you’ve been in love with forever. He’s totally going to fall in love with you now.

Or, It’s a great idea to sleep with the house guy’s best friend out of revenge. That will show Zach. He’ll notice you now. And, Telling Dakota all your hurts and deepest private thoughts is perfectly reasonable. He’s a sympathetic guy, right? His lips are sealed. Never mind that he’s Zach’s best friend from high school and the president of the top frat on campus. And could ruin you without giving it a second thought.

Or my personal favorite, Go ahead. Lie down in the alley behind the frat and Dakota’s car. You should totally sleep there. It’s comfy and safe.

Liar. Liar. Liar!

Dakota

I got to school early, registered, paid my fee, and took a seat in the back of the class. My dad had chewed my ass off when I told him about the fine. He lectured me for half an hour on my stupidity. It had cost him real money. Dad hated paying for shit that could have been avoided.

My buddies at the frat were preparing for a night of first-class partying. Most of them hoping to get laid. And I was in school to learn all about the dangers of drinking. It was a joke. Until she walked in.

My pulse raced. My palms sweated. My dick went involuntarily hard. An absolutely stunning girl stood silhouetted in the doorway—blond, slim but with the kind of figure I found sexy as hell. Fresh-faced, no makeup. Her cheeks pink from the cold. Her eyes warm and bright with exercise and expectation. Her hair curled into the faux fur that rimmed the hood of her coat. She wore flat boots and yoga pants that left just enough to my imagination.

She hesitated at the door, like she was uncertain and nervous. My hero instincts kicked in. I liked her sweet vulnerability. Just as I was about to get out of my chair and play gentleman, introduce myself and see where things led, I stopped cold, recognizing her with a start.

Morgan Peterson? Without makeup. Shit.

You’d think my dick would have gone soft at the sight of her. The damn thing didn’t. My pulse involuntarily sped up. What was it about Morgan Peterson that turned me on even when I was furious with her?

Q&A with Gina Robinson about Crushed

Q—Crushed is the second book in The Rushed Series of New Adult College Romance, is that right? Can you read it without having read book one, Rushed?

A—Yes, it is. And, yes, you absolutely can. All the books in this series are standalone romances. Right now there are only two, but I have more planned. The third book, which I’m tentatively calling Hushed, should be out in January 2015. They’ll all be standalone reads. Of course, I hope you’ll want to read Rushed as well. Rushed will give you more insight, background, and the backstory of the characters in Crushed.

Q—Morgan was the villainess in Rushed. Readers hated her. Weren’t you taking a risk by writing her love story and pairing her with Dakota, who many readers loved?

A—My husband told me, repeatedly, that I was crazy. And maybe I was. But I felt all along that Morgan was the perfect match for Dakota. That she had the sass and spunk to take him on. She was the girl who couldn’t have Zach. Dakota was the guy who could never best Zach. In a way, they were both living in Zach’s shadow. That gave them both common ground and conflict. I knew that if Morgan ever got past her infatuation with Zach and saw Dakota for the guy he was, she would fall passionately for him.

Many people are big believers in first impressions. You know the old saying, “You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression.” While that may be technically true, I’ve found that they can be wrong. I know I’ve made misguided assumptions about people after first meeting them. I hoped readers would give Morgan a second chance when they got to know her better. So far, early reviewers have been very positive and grown to love her when they see her vulnerability, what motivates her, and how she sees herself.

Q—What sparked the idea for Crushed? Why write about Greek life?

A—In my Reckless Series, I wrote about independents, Geeds as they’re called these days. Which are students who choose not to go Greek. Greek life is a unique experience from being a Geed. What happens when you make a Geed live in a Greek house? How does a guy survive in a house full of girls? What kind of problems and conflict does that cause? I was intrigued by the possibilities. Those questions were the germ of the idea for the series.

Actually, I have to credit my husband, too. He worked his way through college as a live-in houseboy for a sorority. The stories he told me about living with the sorority girls were the basis for Zach’s experiences in Rushed. He was part brother, part friend, part servant, part shoulder to cry on. Crushed is an outgrowth of Rushed, a continuation of the story. I had readers begging to see more of Zach and Alexis from Rushed, so I decided to continue their story as a secondary story to Morgan and Dakota’s romance.

Q—What’s next in the series? Will we see more of Dakota and Morgan? Do you find it hard to leave your characters behind?

A—Yes, absolutely! I grow attached to them and hate leaving them. Which is part of the reason I enjoy writing series. Just like Alexis and Zach become secondary characters in Crushed, Dakota and Morgan continue on as secondary characters in book three. Readers will get to see more of their story even as the focus shifts to a new couple.

Thanks so much for having me! Happy reading, everyone!

3.5 starMichel’s Review

What do most kids look forward to most when they go to college?  It is the higher learning process?  Is it the independence from their families?  Is it to better themselves for the future?  Well maybe.  But, I think most kids go to college for the Party Experience, the fraternities and sororities, and freedom to do whatever they want.  Most kids manage to get the experiences they want and reap the benefits of a college education.  They become responsible adults and look back on their college days with fond memories and wild stories.

Morgan and Dakota took their partying a little too far.  In the previous book both of them fell off their high and mighty pedestals.  Morgan drank herself into oblivion after she found out that Zach was involved with Alexis.  She had crushed on Zack since her freshman year.  She was beyond pissed when she found out her little sorority sister, Alexis was involved in a relationship with Zach.  She was not a very likable person in the Rushed book.  Her attitude and self entitlement had readers cringing.

Dakota was also not a very likable character in the first book.  He harbored resentments and jealousy towards Zach.  He was also involved in a relationship that he had to keep secret because his family did not approve.  He had to maintain the reputation of being the fraternity president.  But he was sensible enough to recognize some of his faults and make amends with Zach.  His relationship with his secret girlfriend, Jordan is taking a nose dive. One night of blowing off steam and partying too hard almost leads to vehicular homicide.  He almost ran over Morgan when she passed out behind his car after the fraternity party.  Luckily Zach was there to save Morgan’s life.  Dakota almost ended up killing Zach.

Now Dakota and Morgan are paying the consequences for irresponsible drinking.  They are both in court ordered sobriety classes, they have both lost their drivers licenses until they are twenty one.  They are both social misfits now that they can’t drink.  What starts out as enemies and evolves into frenemies to a fun and comfortable friendship.  They are finally both able to let down their guards and show who they really are instead of what their Greek college life demands.  They are finding a love that could last a lifetime.  First they must learn to trust one another, control their negative behaviors, and let their hearts rule their lives rather than the college Greek hierarchy.

I enjoyed this book and would recommend this series.  I found the Greek organizations a little over bearing and thought it took away from the characters interactions.  I would of like to seen a little more intimacy and personal dialogue rather than all the Greek campus traditions.  I am looking forward to the next book in the series.  It looks like Gina Robinson is setting up a very complicated and angsty story.

I highly recommend the Rushed series.  Each book can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.

Michel’s Review

2.5 Stars

Straddling The Line is the eighth book in Jaci Burton’s red hot Play By Play series. I love this series. I love books that are based upon the professional athletic scene. But Straddling The Line fell short on the scoring.

Straddling The Line features Trevor Shay. Trevor is a dual professional athlete. He plays baseball for the St. Louis Rivers and football for Tampa. He is juggling to professional careers and trying to stay on top of his game. When the death of his suriggate dorm father brings him back into the Briscoe family fold at surrogate mother’s request, he finds that he may be adding one more thing to his list. That is Haven Briscoe.

Haven has struggled after her father’s death. She gave up a successful job in New York as a sport’s journalist to go home to Dallas. Being around Trevor again, her secret crush in college, has her reeling. But she can’t seem to get out of her funk. Trevor knows just how to get her kick started.

Trevor sets up a full tell all expose with the network with the condition that Haven is to be the interviewer. He is hoping that this will bring Haven back into the fold and back into her game.

This tell all interview ends up to be much more than Trevor and Haven planned. This lengthy interview will reveal secrets, expose feelings, and build a relationship neither anticipated. Their chemistry will escalate from hot to a scorching passionate burn.

While I love Jaci Burton and the Play By Play series, Straddling The Line just did not work for me. I felt the scenes were rushed, the chemistry between the characters pushed, the story was rushed and did not flow well. The ending and epilogue were rushed and abbreviated. The characters just did not get under my skin. I found that I was forcing myself to finish this book.

Author Bio:

Jaci BurtonJaci Burton is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling, award-winning author of over 60 books. She lives in Oklahoma and when she isn’t on deadline, she can usually be found trying to convince her husband to remodel some room or another in their house (she blames HGTV for this). She loves gardening, sports, casinos and getting lost in a great book. She’s a total romantic and longs for the happily ever after in every story, which you’ll find in all her books.
