Michel’s Review

If you are looking for light hearted New Adult book, For Real by Chelsea M. Cameron is the ticket.  For Real is the second book in the Rules of Love series.  It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.

For Real is the story of two ordinary college students.  They are not mired with past angst and regrets.  This is a story of a love / hate relationship.  We meet Hazel and Javier.  Their best friends are dating and they are thrown together all the time. Rather than make it an easy and light friendship, the two are always picking at each other.  They live to to get under each other’s skin and enjoy annoying one another.  Beneath the surface they are attracted to one another.

One night they finally give in to their attraction.  It starts off with a kiss and leads to much more after weeks of fighting with one another.  What was meant to be a hook up ends up in a full blown relationship.  Hazel and Javier don’t know what hit them.

For Real was a light fun read.  The characters were realistic and enjoyable.  Their banter and dialogue was witty.  The way they antagonized one another was entertaining.  Their chemistry was sizzling hot and made it very clear that they were perfect for one another.

I would recommend For Real by Chelsea M. Cameron.  It takes the heaviness out of the day and delivers a delightful moment in reading.

Summary

Marisol’s days with Fin are dwindling and they still haven’t discussed where they stand, and that’s not the only thing Marisol doesn’t know about him. They’ve continued to trade secrets for sex, but when Fin reveals one particularly traumatic secret, will Marisol be able to handle it? Or is it better call it quits before she falls even deeper?

“I’m sorry. I didn’t intend to do that tonight. Or ever,” he said after we moved to the couch. We were still entwined, our fingers twisted together and my head resting on his chest.
“It’s okay. We don’t seem to be following the normal couple patterns anyway. And who wants to be normal? I’d rather be abnormal,” I said, tipping my head up to look into his eyes.

“I like your kind of abnormal. Mine is … something else. Aren’t you afraid?”
I sat up. “Of what?”

“Of me. And don’t just shake your head and tell me what you think I want to hear.” His hands clutched mine, hard.

I had to think for a minute to find the right words. To explain something that was, well, a little hard to put into words.

When Fin ran out on Marisol, leaving her naked on her couch, she swore she was done with him. There was no way she would forgive him, let alone see him again. But fate, or something else, had different ideas, and she ran into him again the very next day.

Instead of hating his guts and wanting him to die, Marisol finds that’s she’s still attracted to Fin. She just can’t get him out of her system. Maybe if they had one night together? Just one night and she could get over him. But will that be enough?

Tracey’s Review – 4 Stars

Since meeting Fintan Herald, Marisol Everly’s life has changed. She’s doing things she never thought she’d do, allowing things she swore she would never allow, and it’s one heck of a crazy ride.

Marisol and Fin were introduced by their mutual friends, who thought that they would make a great match. Their attraction to each other is immediate and intense, and Fin quickly sweeps Marisol off her feet, complete with romantic gestures and a hot sexy demeanor. Then, just as quickly as he began to pursue her, Fin backs off, telling her that his secrets are too dark, and that he is no good for her.

‘Deep Surrendering’ is written as a serial, and Episode 2 picks up immediately following the action in Episode 1. Fin has left Marisol in the absolute heat of the moment, running away just when things were at their most intense. She is shocked, angry, humiliated, and adamant that she is DONE with his craziness. The only problem? She can’t get over her attraction to him, darkness and craziness notwithstanding. Determined to get him out of her system, she invites him to finish what they started, so that she can move on. Fin, unable to get over Marisol as well, agrees, but as they move forward in their relationship, they find themselves unable to be apart, and real feelings begin to develop.

I found the idea of an episodic series interesting, wondering how the story would flow from one book to the next without losing steam. Chelsea Cameron has done an excellent job of keeping the reader interested and invested in Marisol and Fin. The story is told from Marisol’s POV (although both episodes have a bonus POV from Fin), and she is great. She’s smart, sassy, and doesn’t take crap from anyone, which makes her relationship with Fin such a departure for her. Her inner dialogue is a riot, and had me laughing out loud. As well, the secondary characters, especially Marisol’s BFF Chloe, are hilarious, and really add to the story. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for Marisol and Fin, and will definitely have Episode 3 at the top of my TBR.
