About Colleen Hoover

Colleen HooverColleen Hoover’s love for writing began in 1985 when she was five years old. Her first story was titled “Mystery Bob” and was a huge hit with her mother, who was really good at faking interest.
Colleen continued to write short stories for friends and family until December of 2011, when she decided to write a long story she titled, “Slammed.” She self-published SLAMMED to Amazon in January, 2012 and it hit the NYT’s bestsellers list in May, 2012. She has since signed with Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, and now has six NYT’s bestsellers. Colleen prefers to be called a writer, as the term “author” still terrifies her and makes this feel like a job with expectations. She doesn’t work well under pressure and hopes writing will always remain fun and exciting.
Colleen’s newest novel, UGLY LOVE, releases August 5th, 2014. She is currently working on a new novel, CONFESS, which she is writing as fast as she can before she wakes up from this crazy dream.

You can follow Colleen on Instagram and Twitter @colleenhoover. You can also find her on her blog at http://www.colleenhoover.com where she holds a daily book-a-day giveaway, or on her very active Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/authorcolleenhoover where she loves to give away more free stuff when her husband isn’t looking.

Colleen also wants the world to know that writing short biographies in third person is incredibly awkward.

During their senior year at NYU, Grace and Matt struck up a friendship over Jeff Buckley, Pearl Jam, and the Ramones. She was going to be a world-class cellist and he was going to be a famous photographer, their paths destined to diverge after graduation.

Even after an afternoon pub crawl ended in their drunken, spontaneous wedding, their visions for the future never overlapped enough for them to be together. The summer after college, he left his “ex-wife” on good terms and went to Brazil to work for National Geographic. They vowed to stay in touch and see each other soon.

They never did.

Fifteen years later, back in New York City, Matt sees Grace as she boards the J train. They’re both different in a hundred ways, and yet they’re still the same. But just as they recognize each other, just as he understands what he left behind all those years ago, the train pulls away. His only recourse is to send a missed connections letter out into the world, and hope she remembers where to look.

Robin’s Review

I noted a couple of outstanding characteristics about Renee Carlino’s writing while reading After the Rain, her third full-length contemporary romance. First, each story written by Carlino is very distinct from her previous novels. And second, her writing flows beautifully – something which has never been more evident to me then when reading this novel. After the Rain is a story about second chances, about recovering from tragedy, and about hope.

Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo grew up on a cattle ranch in Central California. After meeting Jake McCrea at a rodeo, she fell in love. Three short months later, eighteen year-old Avelina dropped out of high school and married her cowboy. Jake and Avelina settled on a ranch a hundred miles northeast of Great Falls, Montana, earning their living as wranglers. After a brief period of happiness, Avelina experienced heartbreaking tragedy. And now, years later, she is terribly misunderstood.

Nate Meyers is following in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from UCLA Medical School, Nate has become the youngest attending surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center, where his father is chief of staff. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Nate has a promising future ahead of him. He works extremely hard and his career has always come first in his life. After making a poor judgment call during surgery, Nate becomes involved in a medical malpractice lawsuit. His father grants him a one month leave of absence from work, sending him to visit his Uncle Dale on a ranch in Montana to gain some perspective on life. In the most unlikely place, Nate meets the reclusive Ava McCrea.

The plot and setting of After the Rain combine to make this story so unlike any other contemporary romance that I have ever read. Although parts of this story are tragic, I feel the overall mood of After the Rain is one of quiet beauty. Much of this story involves scenes in nature, such as riding horses and being outdoors under the big sky of Montana. I had trouble connecting with Ava’s character, although I believe the reason that I felt this way had more to do with her circumstances in life. I loved the ending to After the Rain! Without giving away what happens, I feel the unique method in which Carlino ends this novel strengthens the story, really bringing out my emotions when I was reading! My overall impression of After the Rain is beautiful, favorable, earning Carlino a solid 4-star rating.

Michel’s Review

Renee Carlino has another success with After The Rain.

After The Rain is an emotional book that not only gives the main characters the love of  a lifetime, it is a story about second chances in life.  It’s a story of emotional growth and acceptance.

Two unlikely people come together and find more than love. Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo has suffered a great loss at a very young age.  After the death of her father her family is torn apart.  When she meets the charming young cowboy at a rodeo, she drops out of high school and marries at the very young age of eighteen.  Her young love is her world until tragedy strikes and destroys her life.  Rather than grieving and moving on in life, Avelina is stalled.  She feels guilt for living, she feels responsible for the loss of her husband’s life, and she’s lost the only love she has ever known.  When Nate Meyers arrives on the ranch, she begins to change.  She realizes that no matter what, she is still the one who is living and that it might be time to let go and move on.

Nate Meyers has always wanted to be cardiothoracic surgeon.  He has focused his entire life on that goal.  He reached this goal at an early age after sacrificing much of his youth.  Now he has the career he has always wanted.  When a surgery goes wrong and Nate loses a patient, it is more than a professional loss he is feeling.  He suddenly is questioning his life choices and sacrifices.  He is questioning his career and purpose as a doctor.  A visit to the ranch and introduction to Avelina will change everything.

Nate and Avelina will find a new life that is waiting for them.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that this new life is with them together as a couple.  They will have an emotional journey that will forever change how they are as individuals.  It is a journey of emotional growth and learning what matters most in life.

Renee Carlino wrote a touching story that was mature, insightful, and beautiful.  I highly recommend After The Rain.

About Nowhere But Here

A Chicago reporter in her mid-twenties unexpectedly finds love in Napa Valley when she’s assigned to spend a week with a famously reclusive genius.

Kate Corbin has lost her spark. From the outside, her life seems charmed. She has a handsome, long-term boyfriend and a budding journalism career at a popular Chicago newspaper. But in reality, her relationship is going nowhere, and she’s quickly losing motivation for what she once believed was her dream job. When her boyfriend dumps her unceremoniously, Kate loses all hope of finding love.

With no living family and few friends, Kate confides in her boss. Trusting that the hungry, ace reporter is buried somewhere deep inside, he gives Kate the opportunity to jumpstart her career. The assignment: to interview the famously reclusive R.J. Lawson, a wealthy tech genius who disappeared years ago but recently reemerged as a Napa Valley vintner. The week takes an unexpected turn, however, when Lawson refuses to divulge any information. Desperate for a lead, Kate turns to Jamie, a vineyard hand who shows her the romance of wine country—and stirs her aching heart. But his connection to Lawson is ambiguous, and when Jamie disappears before the end of the week, Kate is left to investigate another story: the truth behind the man who stole her heart.

USA TODAY bestselling author Renée Carlino explored love and heartbreak in her beautifully written debut Sweet Thing, and her newest novel does not disappoint. For fans of Colleen Hoover, K.A. Tucker, and Katja Millay, Nowhere But Here is a stirring and satisfying romance that you won’t want to put down.

4 star read

Robin’s Review

4.5 Stars.  Sweet Thing, the first novel published by Renee Carlino, rightfully earned a spot on my list of favorite novels for 2013.  I found the main characters to be refreshing and connected with them instantly, which made Sweet Thing an extremely satisfying read.  I appreciate the opportunity to review an advanced reader copy of the new contemporary romance from Renee Carlino, Nowhere but Here, which has been provided to me by her publisher through NetGalley.  This is my honest review.

Kate Corbin no longer has any living relatives.  She has struggled since the death of Rose, a childhood friend of her mother who ended up raising her.  Her mother passed away when she was eight without telling her the name of her father.  She is currently going nowhere in a relationship with Stephen, who doesn’t seem to love her or even care about what is going on in her life.  Kate has turned to a homeless man who calls himself “Just Bob” for advice, whose first piece of advice to her was, “You’re all you’ve got!”

Kate has lost all motivation for her career as a journalist and has struggled with her job for several months.  Her boss at the Chicago Crier newspaper, Jerry, gives her an assignment with substance, hoping to ignite her spark.  She is to spend a week in Napa, California, to interview and write an article about R.J. Lawson, the reclusive owner of a vineyard.  This interview has been highly sought after by journalists, yet none could obtain it until now.  R.J. Lawson is a billionaire – a computer engineering prodigy who made all of his money in the technology industry.

Upon arrival at the vineyard, Kate has an automobile accident, running her rental car straight into a truck driven by a handsome work hand and maintenance man named Jamie.  After her accident, Jamie sends her off to her interview with a warning that R.J. can be difficult to deal with.  Kate ends up in an argument with R.J. Lawson, essentially failing at her interview, but Jamie and the other employees of the vineyard step in to help her enjoy the rest of her weeklong visit.  Jamie gives her a tour around the vineyard, and this is when things start to become interesting between the two of them.  The two of them have an undeniable attraction for each other.  Although Jamie continues to work very hard while she is there, he makes time for Kate and is focused on her needs.  When the two of them are together, their personalities just seem to spark.  It doesn’t take long for Jamie and Kate to begin developing feelings for each other.  As they start to open their hearts up to one another, Kate begins to realize that Jamie is holding back information about himself.  And then he disappears without a word of explanation.

Nowhere but Here is more than just a contemporary romance.  It is a story of self-discovery – about realizing how much you really do have as an individual, making the best of your own situation, and finding your own place in this world.  In this novel, Renee Carlino focuses on gratitude and healing, the concept of discovering who your family really is, and learning to believe in the power of love.  It is full of underlying lessons which made this love story even more special for me.  It is obvious that Renee Carlino completed some extensive research before writing this novel – research which assisted in making this a unique, creative and interesting story.  If you are looking for a beautifully written contemporary romance, I recommend Nowhere but Here!

About Renée Carlino

Renee Carlino

Renee’s first friends were the imaginary kind and even though her characters haven’t gone away, thankfully the delusions have. She admits she’s a wildly hopeless romantic and she blames 80’s movies starring Molly Ringwald for that. She lives in Southern California with her husband, two sons, and their sweet dog June. When she’s not at the beach with her boys or working on the next book, she likes to spend her time reading, going to concerts, and eating dark chocolate.
