The Brooklyn Bruisers are back and heading into the playoffs for the Stanley Cup.  The next few months are going to be a grueling, time consuming, and demanding on every level.  Forget having a personal life, time for friends, and real time with family.  Put all the problems aside and focus on the game.  The cup is within reach, it’s worth the sacrifices made.  The players for the Brooklyn Bruisers aren’t the only ones making the sacrifices.  Their support staff and families are feeling the crunch as well. The last thing Lauren Williams wants is to be working with the Brooklyn Bruisers, especially during the play offs. She hates hockey and hates the time demanded by the team.  Stepping in as the assistant to the Bruisers owner is one thing, spending all her time with the team is another. How can she do her job and avoid the team? There is one player in particular that she will avoid at all cost.  Goalie Mike Beacon ruined her life, broke her heart, and left her hanging out to dry.  She will never let that happen to her again.  She learned the hard way and still carries the scars from being burned.

Mike Beacon never forgot the passionate year he spent with Lauren.  She was his everything, the reason his heart beat.  He had his reasons for leaving her and returning to his wife and daughter.  It wasn’t because he didn’t love her, he had a responsibility to his family.  He had to make sacrifices in order for them to survive what was to come.

Lauren is back in his life.  She’s back with the team.  He’s more than determined to win her heart and keep her by his side this time.  This is the most important win of his life, she’s more important than the Stanley Cup and the team.  The only thing standing in his way is Lauren’s stubbornness and his teenage daughter’s attitude. He’s the toughest goalie in the league and conquering the two women in his life is the hardest game he’s ever played.

Once again Sarina Bowen had my full attention.  In the two previous books of the Brooklyn Bruiser series, readers were given a very distinct and different impression of Lauren Williams.  She was not a very likable or impressionable character.  Sarina let the readers become intimate with the real Lauren hiding beneath the surface.  The woman loved with her complete heart and was badly burned.  To make matters worse, the repercussions of the break up were more than most people could bear.  It’s no wonder she hated everything about hockey.  What impressed me the most was her strength of character, her sense of morality, and her drive to become a better person.  I loved that she didn’t let heartbreak ruin her, she embraced it, moved on and made a good life for herself.  She was a classy woman to be admired.  It’s no wonder Mike Deacon was hopelessly in love with her.

I highly recommend Pipe Dreams by Sarina Bowen.  It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.  The Brooklyn Bruisers are out to win your heart.

I laughed. “My kind of guy.”

“I just wonder what it’s like— to be that in love after all that time,” she said, bending forward and resting the curve of her chin on her hand.

“How do you know it has been a long time?” I asked. “Maybe they got married late in life.”

She shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

“Why?” I asked, curious how she’d reached that conclusion.

“There was a familiarity in the way they touched. The way they leaned into one another, the way they walked. It was as if they’d been doing so forever.”

I studied her for a quiet moment, recalling the intensity of her words and the passion in her voice. It was the first time since meeting Katelyn O’Malley, I could actually see a sliver of Laura Stone, the author, somewhere inside.

“I do believe you are a bit of a romantic at heart,” I replied.

She smiled sweetly. “Maybe a hopeless one.”

My hand reached out to hers, a needless gesture since we’d already achieved our goal for the evening and sold everyone on our false marital status.

This time, I touched her because I wanted to.

“Definitely not hopeless,” I said softly, knowing that instant that I was crossing the line between business and pleasure.

And heading straight to the land of hell.

“So, tell me about technical editing,” she said, shifting topics. “How does one get into something like that?”

I suddenly felt like I’d been hit in the face with a bucket of ice water. Here I was, in a dimly lit room, romancing the hell out of a woman I’d just met, and then reality hit.

I was lying to her.

Flat-out lying.

I needed to remember that. “There’s not much to tell,” I said, straightening slightly in my chair. “Rather boring really.”

We continued to chat about our lives. She told me more about her work at the college. I rambled off more lies about mine until the check came around.

I was feeling quite good about myself as I led us outside.

My head was clear.

But then I saw the way the moonlight highlighted her golden-blonde hair. I became mesmerized by the sway of her hips and the soft curves of her body.

I point to the guy behind the glass. “You want Peter’s number?”

Teague walked along the sidewalk outside the White House, trying his damnedest to figure out why he’d asked her to coffee. Bloody hell, as Kamal would say, had he lost his mind? She shook her head. “No. I was seeing someone back in Boston where I moved from, but it wasn’t going anywhere.” She looked up at him from under her lashes. “And you?”

“No. No time for all that. I work eighty hours a week and spend the other few at the gym or sleeping. I’m not all that exciting.”

She shifted on her chair, and her blouse slipped a touch, giving him a peek at the cleavage that hid beneath. His heart raced and his skin heated.

“Well, from what I heard on the news earlier, today’s been enough excitement for a few years at least.”

He chuckled softly. “It’s been a strange day for sure.”
