Ten years ago, roboticist Forbes Pohle received a visit from time-traveler Oliver Lennox. “Wait for me,” Oliver said. Now a decade has come and gone, and Oliver has returned. However, Forbes never dreamed Oliver would reappear as the point man for a gang of technology thieves breaking into his lab. He finds the younger Oliver just as sexy and even more annoying; still, he must convince him their happily-ever-after is meant to be—but he only has the time it takes his robotic cat Jeepers to thwart the thieves to do it. 5 Quirky Things About Aidee

by Aidee Ladnier

I write about quirky characters because that’s what I know. I’m a pretty quirky individual myself. Here are a few things you might not know about me.

I’ve designed my own shoes

literaryshoes

I really, really like shoes–not high heels—flats. A friend made the mistake of telling me about a company that lets you design your own shoes. Sure enough, they had lots of heels and one template for flats. I immediately started tinkering and then ordered my author shoes. Here they are! Words are so pretty, aren’t they?

I’ve sent a ping pong ball into space.

pingpong

JP Aerospace, a volunteer DIY space program was raising funds to send ping pong ball sized science projects by elementary school children up to the edge of space in 2012. As a lover of all things science and science fiction, I gave money to the cause. In thanks, they let me put a ping pong ball in with those of the children. I ran my own ping pong ball sized experiment and got the thrill of seeing the video that included my experiment coasting in space among the stars. Here’s a picture of my ping pong ball before it went up to space. Which leads to my next quirky fact…

I fold so many origami cranes that I use them as packing material when I mail boxes

It all started when my computer began running slow at work. I would have to reboot often and I found I could make two origami cranes in the time it took my computer to restart. Then I began folding cranes in meetings to keep my hands busy so my brain could stay engaged (think of it like doodling with folded paper). Now it’s a crutch. Whenever I’m stressed, I fold a bird.

Whenever I’m worried, another crane appears. I have to say, my Christmas gifts to my family are enjoyed as much for the crane packing material as they are for the gifts.

One of my poems inspired an indie pop song by the band Correatown

As a thank you for supporting her album on Kickstarter, Angela Correa offered to write a song for me. She asked what I’d like to provide as inspiration and I gave her a love poem that I wrote for my husband. The song that resulted was beautiful and I gave it to him as an anniversary gift that year. If you’d like to hear Distillery by Correatown, you can do so by going here: http://aideemoi.tumblr.com/post/26007891265/you-know-several-years-ago-i-was-divorced-over-a

socksI have an extensive collection of silly socks

There’s really no excuse for the socks I own. They are all colors of the rainbow, some have animals on them, some have strange shapes, all are fun. It’s wonderful to wake up not sure you’re ready to face the day and then put on some goofy socks. It changes everything around.

Of course there are other quirky things about me that didn’t make it into this list–several of them are listed in my bio, in fact. I’m of the opinion that adventures are everywhere. You just have to recognize them. So may the quirk be with you and remember, have fun today.

The Forbes and Oliver Playlist for The Break-in

I have to admit when I’m looking for songs to fill a playlist for a story, they have to meet one of two criteria:

The lyrics have to match what a character is feeling

The song has to capture the mood of a scene

That said, here are the songs I chose for this story and why. If you’re interested, I created the playlist on YouTube so you can listen to the whole set here: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaf-IXveR9pUKgijDcluQcrnjwxiYpGz2

Moving On by Needtobreathe

I think this song captures Forbes at the start of the story. He’s waiting for his lover to reappear when their stars align but is contemplating moving on. It encompasses that kind of sad but inevitable feeling that you might be waiting for nothing.

Mission Impossible Theme

Okay, I know this is a pretty cheesy pick, but I am dead certain that Wilson, the self-appointed leader of the technology thieves, insisted that this music be played in the van on the way over to Forbes’s lab. Oliver was lucky he drove his own motorcycle to the scene, because they would have come to blows over the endless repetition of this song.

99 Problems by Hugo

I know the Jay-z version is more famous, but I love the almost folky sound of this song. This is Oliver’s song as things start to go south. He’s suddenly on the wrong side of both Forbes and the gang of thieves he’s working for.

Take On Me by A-ha

Shameless 80s guilty pleasure music. THE BREAK-IN is set in the near future, so I’m going to say Forbes has it in his music library because his parents listened to it.

Ruler of My Heart by Irma Thomas

I love the soulful sound of Irma Thomas. This is definitely a Forbes song. He’s waited so long for his lover to return and when he does, it’s not at all in the way he expects.

Jeepers Creepers by Frank Sinatra

I had to include this song. It’s Jeepers’s song! The little cat robot embodies this quirky little ditty. He probably plays it in the house whenever Forbes leaves—which could explain why he was so grumpy that Forbes blew off the blind date at the beginning of the story.

Do It Alone by Sugarcult

Forbes would understand this song. He doesn’t want to be alone anymore. He’s willing to beg Oliver to stay.

With you by Natalie Walker

The lyric “Love takes time and time is on our side” is perfect for THE BREAK-IN. Forbes definitely found his life changed by Oliver and as a result his love didn’t fade despite time and circumstance. It’s a sappy song but those are okay sometimes.

Life Less Ordinary by Carbon Leaf

This song embodies Forbes and Oliver’s relationship. They are somehow a lot less ordinary together and together they will have an extraordinary life.

Little Wonders by Rob Thomas

This song is for the end of the story. The hardest part is over for both Forbes and Oliver. The twist and turns of fate have left them exhausted and time has fallen away. It’s definitely the heart that really matters in the end.

All Will Be Well by Gabe Dixon

This song is my song. As the author, I want to tell my characters that all will be well but only time will tell. There are a few more Forbes and Oliver stories to come.

5 Star Read

Kelley’s Review

Aidee Ladnier captured my heart with this little novella. The love that Forbes shows for Oliver is breathtakingly beautiful.

Forbes met Oliver once upon a time and fell in love. When Oliver left him it would have destroyed him except that, Oliver promised to return to him in the future. Forbes knew that when Oliver returned he would be a younger version of the man he fell in love with, but never in his wildest dreams would he have expected the young man who broke into his lab.

“I’ve got to make a living. I’ve got other people who depend on me, and a part-time job at the Quickie Mart isn’t gonna cut it.” – Oliver

Oliver is young and scared but he has a job to do. His mission is to steal Forbes’s most recent invention and he has to complete his mission no matter what the cost so he can get paid. He desperately needs the money to keep him and those that rely on him alive. When Forbes starts talking about meeting him in the past Oliver does not believe him.

This is the point in the story when I cried. Oliver just had to believe Forbes. He could not just walk away could he?

I am really looking forward to the next book in this series. Great job Aidee. You had me at m2.

“Wait a second.” Stede caught Embry’s arm. “I can’t let you walk home by yourself at this hour.”
“I walk all over the place by myself.”
“If you get raped and killed, I’ll never forgive myself.”
“Okay, now I’m scared. Thanks for that. Do you have a savior complex?”
“Only around you.”
He was good. Too damn good. Nobody, no guy, said stuff like that and meant it. “Are you the type of savior who rescues the damsel from the trouble you create?”
His grin sent a jolt of excitement through her.
“I can see why you might think that, but no, I’m a responsible adult.” He stood. “Now, how ‘bout I give you a ride?”
“How adult are you?”
He tilted his head to the side and raised his eyebrows. “You’re a flirty little thing.”
“I was asking your age, not how X-rated you can get. You’re a guy. I already know the answer to that one.”

~Audrey~

“What about you?” Blake asked gently.

“I’m home to see my family.” I shifted on my feet, not wanting to go into too much detail either. I refrained from laughing at observing how we seemed to share that minor detail. “However, I now live in San Francisco.”

Blake’s dark eyebrow curled, slightly lifting, and his lower lip twitched in amusement. Gosh, he was just so damn sexy, it was distracting.

“You gave up the country life for the city?” he finally teased.

I let out a laugh at his expression and nodded. “Yeah.”

“How’s that working out for you?”

I tilted my head his way, failing to stifle my humor. “If you ignore all the absurdly confusing highways, traffic and noise, then it’s not so bad.”

Blake laughed, deep and throatily. The sound sent an undeniable shiver down my spine. I chastised myself for letting a simple conversation with a man affect me so, as he replied, “That’s a lot to ignore.”

You have no idea, I thought, referring to not being able to deflect his effects on me. I felt my inner strength wavering.

“It is,” I responded in more ways than one, realizing that I needed to get away from here. Being here was too much. He was too much. I swallowed deeply before saying, “Well it was a pleasure to meet you, Blake. But I do have to be going now.” I felt guilty for dismissing myself, so I added, “But maybe I’ll see you around with the other’s another time?”

His gaze turned speculative, and he parted his lips to speak. But he didn’t. The look he was giving me felt as though he could see right through me. It was unnerving.

Within seconds, his eyes shifted again, appearing to let me off the hook.

I released a silent sigh, thankful for his respecting my privacy, and not asking for any explanation.

“Since my two brothers are marrying your friends, I would say there is a good chance.” Blake grinned at last, revealing a sexy dimple at the corner of his mouth.

My eyes were captivated by the faint movement.

Stop thinking about his mouth!

He definitely had a good point, which only made me even more nervous. “I’ll see you later,” I waved with a pleasant smile and excused myself before my nerves melted into a puddle at his feet.

I quickly found Abbey, Gail and Lily, and then each of their significant others to congratulate them and say my goodbyes before racing to my car. All the while feeling like I could not breathe, as though I was being suffocated by thoughts of how breathtakingly handsome Blake was.

After stopping at the store for my mother’s saltine crackers, I sped home, yearning to step through the front doors, so I could be reminded of all the reasons to stay clear away from that man. All it took was sixty seconds of seeing how my father treated my mother, and it was a reality slap that love does not exist.

I would not allow myself to be so effected by a man, and weakened by the idea of having one of my own. I shook my head. Being around Gail, Abbey, and Lily with their men today had just played tricks on my mind. Sure, each of my friends had found great, loving men. But it was a risk I would never take a chance on.

And I would never cave to temptation. It could only lead to a broken heart.

 EXCERPT

Max

“How are you holding up? Did it go okay with Nate last night?”

She stiffens at his name. “He asked me to move to LA.”

Of course he did. “And what did you say?”

She blinks at me. “I’m not leaving New Hope. This is my home.”

“He wanted more than for you to move to LA.” I take a step closer. I need to touch her. I wonder if she knows she’s pulling away from me, if she can feel it like I can. It’s as if we’re connected by a thousand little threads like those in a woven rug and they’ve been breaking one at a time since the moment Nate came back into town. With every breath, I feel another thread snap. “He wanted you.”

She shrugs. “I’m already taken.”

I draw in a deep breath. She lifts her hand to my face and skims her fingers along my jaw.

I groan softly and slide my hand into her hair as I lower my mouth to hers. She’s soft and sweet, and I need more of her.

Taking a fistful of her skirt, I yank her dress up around her waist and find the cotton of her panties. She gasps, and I rub her through the fabric as her fingers curl into my back. My lips find her neck and the skin in the sensitive juncture of neck and shoulder.

“Max,” she says. But it’s not the normal breathy, needy whispering of my name. The word is a warning. A yield sign. “Max.”

My hand stills and I pull back to look into her eyes. I’m blindsided by the apology I see there. “Let’s move in together.”

“What?” She blinks at me. If she’s thinking I have the world’s worst timing with important proposals, she’s not wrong.

“We could rent out our apartments and use the money to rent a little place together. Someplace without those stairs that scare the living shit out of me every time I think of you climbing them. Someplace we can make our own.” I take her hand and squeeze. “You didn’t want to move in together last spring because you knew your mom would flip if you lived with a guy before marriage, but we’re not trying to maintain appearances anymore, are we?” She looks at the floor, and I tilt her chin back up so her eyes meet mine. “I could give two shits about appearances. I want to wake up with you in my arms, Hanna. I want to know I’m going to be right there when you need me, every time you need me. You and Claire are all that matter in my world. I want everything that matters to be what I come home to every night.”

“I’m sorry.” She steps back. “I just can’t. I’m too confused right now.”

My lungs burn as I fill them—it hurts to breathe in a world where Hanna isn’t mine.

“I know it’s not fair. And I want a future with you, but…”

“But you can’t stop thinking about him.”

“I can’t move in with you right now,” she says softly. “That wouldn’t be fair to either of us. It’s not that simple.”

“You keep saying that.”

I swallow back the rest of what I want to say right along with my anger, frustration, and the betrayal I’ve never allowed myself to feel. While I was waiting for her to take my ring, she was with another man, and I was never allowed to be angry because that man died and she needed to grieve.

I drag a hand through my hair and look at the ceiling. “Was it that simple when you made love to him?”

“Can we not do this?”

Torment is etched across her face, and I can’t stand to know I’m the one who put it there. I pull her against my chest.

“I won’t rush you, but remember something for me,” I whisper into her hair. “You put on my ring.”

I live in rural Indiana, where, when I’m not writing, I get to hang out with my husband and two kids–a six-year-old boy and a two-year-old hellion, er, girl. Not surprisingly, reading and writing remain my favorite activities, though both come in bits and pieces these days, not the big hunks of time I enjoyed before I had children.  Excerpt

Rhiannon

The darkness in the car did little to soothe the heat that clutched my body.

Sterling’s nearness made me want to run my hands through his thick black hair and pull him toward me and kiss his lips. To feel them move across my neck—

“What are you working on now that the Malibu series is complete?”

“Hmm.” I pulled my gaze from Sterling’s lips and looked out into the night.

“I’ve been drawn to Venice,” I said.

“Ah, that explains the look of surprise when I told you where I lived. You should come down. You could even stay with me, for your work, if you wanted.”

If Sterling were feeling the same kind of heat I was right now, staying with him at his house would quickly turn from being about my work to more about our desires. We both understood the truth of that.

“I could show you around. Venice has changed since we were kids. Do you remember when we’d spend the day down there?”

“I do.” The warm days on the sand with Sterling beside me with our hands clasped and his lips on mine. The press of his body. He was bigger now—the difference between a boy and a man. Fuller. Larger. His eyes flicked from the road to me.

“What are you remembering?” His voice was lower.

“Our days and our nights.”

The muscle in his jaw flinched. The memories played out for him too. He took a tight curve then slowed and turned into the dirt drive that led to my mother’s ranch.

“Would you like to see my work?” I asked as the headlights crested the final hill. “Go past the house. Mama is letting me use the guest house as my studio.”

Alone. Sterling and I would be alone for the first time since I’d returned from Europe. My breath shortened and heat pooled between my legs. My breasts ached in anticipation of his touch. There was heat in his eyes when he looked at me; surely he saw the heat in mine. He parked and we entered the little adobe

house. I fluttered ahead of him toward the kitchen, no longer so certain of what I wanted or needed from Sterling. He walked with an effortless grace. “Wine?” I asked from behind the kitchen counter.

“Please,” he said.

His gaze landed on the far wall that reached up to the skylight. I’d added more pictures of Venice. My canvas rested near the pictures, but it was still empty of color. I hadn’t committed, not yet. Sterling examined the canvas and then walked closer to the wall.

“Your photography is good too,” he said.

I walked to his side, glasses of wine in my hands. His eyes turned from the wall to me, and heat simmered in his eyes. My tongue chased out over my lip and words clutched in my throat. Sterling. This was Sterling Legend, now a man, no longer a boy and I was now a woman, no longer a girl.

I held a glass of wine out to him and he plucked both glasses from my fingertips and set them on the table beside my canvas.

“I’m not here for the wine, Rhiannon. I’m here for you.”

He slid his hand to the back of my neck and pulled me forward. Our gazes locked and his blue eyes, the shade of the California sky, heated with desire. Then his lips were on mine. With his kiss came a rush of desire and passion. The air burst from my lungs with the press of his lips. A slow moan rolled from me. He

was familiar and yet different. His tongue brushed against the seam of my lips and my mouth opened to his. Our kiss grew greedier. His hand shifted from the back of my neck and his fingers trailed across my throat and stopped at my breast. He

cupped me and a moan escaped my throat. My hands clasped his shirt and I tugged upward. My fingertips brushed across his skin. Where once Sterling’s skin had been bare, there was now a trail of hair from his belly up toward his chest.

He pulled his mouth from mine. His hand clasped both sides of my face.

“Oh my God Rhiannon, I still, you still, I can’t—”

“I know.”

The heat in my chest and between my legs gave way to a low ache. My desire for Sterling was hotter than ever now, due to our long absence from each other. His eyes searched mine as if for confirmation that it was truly me that he kissed. That I was here, with him. Surprise and uncertainty flashed over his face.

He did not surrender to his fear. He took a step forward and pressed his lips to mine. There was no hesitancy. Any doubts were replaced with a determined desire that we shared.

Sterling’s hand pressed the thin straps of my dress over my shoulders and his fingertips roamed over my bare chest. I pulled his shirt off his body. I wanted to see him. Needed to see him. His chest was solid and his skin a light gold color. The planes of his chest gave way to the hard quilted muscles of his stomach. A tiny trail of black hair dusted past his belly button.

I locked my gaze with him and reached forward to his jeans and quickly unbuttoned and unzipped them. A memory of unzipping Sterling’s jeans rushed through my head. I pushed his pants past his hips and he took them all the way off.

He stood before me, his maleness hard and alert. A bolt of heat rolled through me.

His was a perfect body. The beauty of the male form aroused and waiting for entry. I pressed the tip of my finger to the head of his cock.

He sucked air over his teeth. “Rhiannon.”

My name on his lips was part warning and part need. The sound aroused me and the wet I felt between my legs grew. His arms hung at his side but his gaze was locked with mine. I grasped his cock at the base and stroked upward with a

long pull. A stroke that sent trembles through him. His arm reached out and he clasped the back of my neck. With his other hand he clutched my breast and he leaned forward and his lips took my nipple into his mouth. He rolled the tight bud

over his tongue. My head fell back and I surrendered to the waves of pleasure. His other hand slid down my belly and into my panties. The hot nub he’d yet to touch pulsed and throbbed with desire for him. His fingers entered my fold and pressed

against my clit and I struggled to breathe.

“Sterling.” Desire overcame me and I lost the rhythm of my stroke on his cock. I held him in my hands while his lips and fingers pleasured me. He lifted me.

His stride was long as he walked toward the bed on the far side of the room. He settled me onto the white duvet and his hands clasped my hips and he rolled the panties off my body. He gazed at me.

“Each night before I fall asleep I see this. I see you like this. Lying naked before me, waiting for me. For seven years, Rhiannon, I’ve waited for this.” My heart burst open with his words. There was an ache and a need and all kinds of questions in his words that, in this moment, he didn’t ask. For this, I was thankful. There would be time for me to explain and to tell him all the details

of why I had to leave, but right now, I wanted him to slake our desire. I wanted Sterling to pin me to the bed and make my body come over and over again. I wanted to be his in a way I’d never experienced with any man. His hands started at my breast and he trailed them down over my belly and to my wet folds. He pressed his fingertips to my center and all the while his

eyes remained fixed to mine. His fingers circled and pressed my clit, and my hips bucked upward toward his hand.

His mouth grasped my lips and his tongue caressed mine and then he pulled his lips from me. A moan came from my mouth and mourned the loss of his mouth on mine. His lips, hot yet slow like liquid heat, trailed down my neck and across

my breast while his fingers caressed my clitoris. His fingers pushing and pulling with the rhythm of my hips following his touch. His lips kissed over my belly to the edge of my sex. His tongue trailed up my thigh and then down. He knelt before me, parted my legs, and placed my each of my knees over his shoulders. He looked up over my mound and met my eyes. A

deep want, a need, claimed his face. I couldn’t breathe. I held myself so still and waited for his touch. The touch of his finger, the touch of his tongue, and then a stroke of heat from his mouth that nearly sent me over the edge. He roamed up the inner left side of my cleft and around the most sensitive of spots without fulfillment, without a suck or a kiss. Sterling was between my legs and about to send me over the edge. His finger slid into me and my muscles bore down. I was so wet, so molten, so ready for his hard thick maleness.

“Please, Sterling,” I begged, my hips moving and rolling. I could not remain still, I could not contain my want.

“Rhiannon, be patient, we’ve waited a long time for this moment.”

And then with the words barely from his lips his mouth was on me. Hot and fierce and demanding. His tongue caressed my clit while his mouth sucked.  One finger, now two, pulsed in and out of my body. My hand found his head and I clutched him. My hips bucked wildly into his mouth. The light shattered around me, and his eyes met mine one final time. I crashed over the edge and cascaded into shattered bits of light from the pleasure of his mouth on me.

I clutched him and I went over the edge again and again and again. My body jerked and spasmed with his stroke. I shuddered one final time and Sterling pulled his mouth from me. He appeared satisfied. Pleased that he’d brought me so much pleasure. I was heavy-lidded and wet and sated and yet I wanted him. I wanted him inside me. My eyes roamed over the hugeness of his cock. His lips pressed to mine and I tasted the earthy goodness of me on his lips. My hands grasped him and his breath became uneven. He pulled his lips from mine.

“Rhiannon, we don’t have to, we can wait—”

“We’ve waited seven years,” I said. “We’ve waited long enough.”

ARC Review: Fiancée For Hire by Tawna Fenskee

fiancee for hire

Synopsis

Former Marine MacArthur Patton has made a small fortune on top-secret government contracts and black-ops missions, but his new assignment involves something more dangerous—marriage.

Well, fake marriage anyway.

To keep weapons out of the hands of terrorists, Mac has to secure a fiancée. A sweet, demure, compliant fiancée to serve as his arm candy for a few weeks while he completes the covert arms deal in Mexico. His sister claims to know just the woman, and sends her best friend to play the role.

“Sweet” and “demure” aren’t in Kelli Landers’s repertoire. A badass veterinarian who neuters big dogs and bigger men on a regular basis, she can’t wait to bring Mr. Tall-Dark-and-Detached to his knees. Her longtime crush on the commitment-phobe makes her plan to seduce him even sweeter.

Love wasn’t part of the plan, but the deeper Mac and Kelli fall into their ruse, the more danger they attract, until more than just their hearts are on the line…

Kelley’s Review

Fiancée  For Hire is fun, flirty, and full of sizzle.

Have you ever read a book and once you were finished decided to read it again?  That is what I did with Fiancée  For Hire.  I adored this book.  It was hysterically funny and yet the chemistry between Mac and Kelli was sizzling hot.  Of course I am going to love this book because the heroine is named Kelli even if Tawna spelled it wrong.  Ha!  I promise that you will be hooked by the end of chapter one.

Kelli is an amazingly talented Veterinarian.  Several papers published about her mad skills as a Vet.  When her best friend Sheri approaches her about acting as her brother Mac’s fiancee Kelli thinks she has lost her mind.  Sheri knows that Kelli has had a secret crush on Mac since they were kids.  The more she thinks about this crazy scheme of Sheri’s the more she considers going through with it.  There is a chance she could finally act on her crush and possibility build a spay and neuter clinic to deal with a very large and well know feral cat colony that resides in Todos Santos.

“So Mac is expecting sweet, calm, and pliable fiancée?

Sheri nodded. “And instead we send him you.”

Kelli gave her most angelic smile and sliced off the cat’s testicles.

“I’m in.”

Mac knows that he needs a fiancee if he is going to pull off the arms deal he has been working on.  Why?  Because Mac was a bit of a bad boy and might have messed around with Pedro Zapata’s wife.  The deal would probably go a lot smoother if Zapata believed that Mac no longer had feelings for his bride.  My favorite part of this book is the witty banter between the characters.  It kept me turning the pages to see what kind of bomb Kelli was going to drop on him next.

“What can you tell me about the mission?”

She said the word with air quotes, a detail Mac found both endearing and irritating.  “Have you heard the name Pedro Ubano Tujillo Zapata?” he asked carefully.

“No.  Though I appreciate the fact that his initials spell PUTZ.”

“You’ll want to refrain from pointing that out if you meet him.”

The chemistry between Mac and Kelli was off the charts hot.  Kelly is the mistress of seduction when she teases Mac while trying to pick out a cocktail dress for for dinner with Zapata.  When they finally give in to their urges albeit after she repairs a prolapsed penis on a lizard in Zapata’s bathroom, it is scorching hot.  Get ready for some new panties ladies.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any one that enjoys romantic comedy with a little sizzle.  Tawna Fenske delivers a great read once again!

Synopsis

One broken heart, one drink too many, one steamy night in the sand…

No one warns you about the dangers of drinking with a broken heart. At least no one warned me. I never imagined I’d fall for a musician, especially not one like Chase, but then again I never expected to have my heart broken into a million pieces by the frat guy I thought was the love of my life.

Sometimes it’s the rash decisions, like hooking up in the sand, that lead you to the best places—the kinds of places where it’s possible to let yourself fall in love again.

 Excerpt

He took a strand of my hair and studied it. “Is this your natural color?”

“Yes.”

He dropped the strand. “I’ve never dated a girl with blonde hair.”

“Well, you’re not dating me.”

He gently brushed his fingers down my bare arm. “No, but I want to kiss you.”

“Then kiss me.” I was used to pushy guys. The kind that knew what they wanted and took it.

“Okay.” He smiled before leaning in.

The kiss was hesitant at first, the kind of kiss that gets your whole body excited because you know there’s more to come. I waited—hoping he’d take it further. His hand slid just under the hem of my shirt, brushing against my skin. The touch was light, but it was still enough to get a response out of me. I moaned.

That must have been what he was waiting for. He deepened the kiss, pushing into my mouth with such force I was taken by surprise. I kissed him back, enjoying the sweet taste of his mouth, and the way his hand slowly inched its way up my stomach. Blazer moved from zero to sixty. I didn’t mind it. I moved onto his lap, welcoming the arm he put around me to pull me closer. I wrapped my arms around his neck.

His hand moved higher, cupping my breast over my bra. I was drunk and hot, and so turned on I was going to lose it.

That’s when the door to the roof opened. The loud laughter of a group of girls pulled me half out of my lustful stupor.

“Want to go for a walk?” His question was asking something else entirely. I knew that when I answered with an enthusiastic yes.

Blazer held my hand as we made our way through the crowds. I looked briefly for Gabriella, but I didn’t see her. The normal Cara would have called her to tell her I was leaving with a random guy—but was Blazer random? We had chatted for hours already.

Before I could worry about it long, we were walking along the dark and nearly vacant beach. It was January on the South Carolina coast, and the crowds were months away.

“You never told me your name.” He said it as a statement as he led me further away from the party.

“Cara.”

“Hi, Cara. I’m Chase.”

I smiled. “Isn’t it a little late for introductions?” I stopped and turned toward the ocean.

“It’s never too late.” He drew something on my arm with his finger. The sensation felt good. I closed my eyes.

“You look so gorgeous. The moonlight, that look on your face.”

I opened my eyes and his face was inches from mine. “If you’ve never dated a blonde, does that mean you’ve never had sex with one?”

“Why? Are you looking to change that?” His eyes were lidded.

“I’d like to.” I slipped a finger into the waistband of his jeans.

“Should we go back to my hotel room, or do you have one?” He looked down. “I’m going to be honest here. I haven’t done this before.”

“Please don’t tell me you’re a virgin.” That would be just my luck.

He laughed. “No. Not saying that at all. I just don’t generally hook up with girls I’ve just met.”

“At least you know my name.”

“I do know your name, don’t I, Cara?”

Something happened to me when he said my name. I needed him. I reached up again, wrapping my arms around him. I crushed my lips into his.

We came up for air only after ending up horizontal on the sand. He laughed. “Or we can just pick things up right here.”

 Tracey’s Review

When Cara and Chase met, there may have been some alcohol involved. Okay, a lot of alcohol. And maybe Cara was still trying to get over a cheating ex that had broken her heart. Because, why else would she get frisky with a guy that she didn’t know, hooking up and then running, without even telling him her last name or phone number? After all, she figured, she’d never see Chase again. If only life was that simple…

Alyssa Rose Ivy has done an entertaining job of taking this scenario and writing a story that shows how a chance encounter can turn into something much more. As the relationship between Cara and Chase grows and evolves, so do their characters. Cara finds strengths and interests that she didn’t know she had, and both she and Chance find that the right relationship allows each person to grow and shine, rather than conform to someone else’s idea of who they should be. I always enjoy Alyssa’s writing, both the stories and the characters. Besides Cara and Chase, all of the supporting cast had great personalities, and I found myself laughing out loud at the interactions between Cara and her friends. I look forward so the next book in the series (Alyssa, if you’re reading this, I’m hoping that Jade or Kyle will be next!).

Excerpt

Beauty is indeed a good gift of God; but that the good may not think it a great good, God dispenses it even to the wicked. – Saint Augustine

France

Elizabeth stood with her elegant silhouette backlit by the city at night. One hand absently held an empty champagne flute; the other toyed with the heavy curtains that framed a view of the heart of Paris. Her brown eyes lingered over the city as she stretched her sculptured body in a feline motion that sent black hair falling down her snowy back in a silken rush. Over her shoulder, on the edge of the tangled bed, the girl dressed, pulling boots on her long legs. She was tall, young, and radiant, possibly Czech, a honey blonde in her late teens. Her looks were natural and fresh, but unfinished, where Elizabeth was a classic dark beauty with a commanding presence that only breeding and maturity could grant. Money could buy the appearance of wealth but not the assurance to wear it like a second skin. The girl’s beauty would command the eyes of men wherever she went, but Elizabeth’s would bend their will even as she entered a room. Even a fool could see that the blood of kings flowed in her veins. Standing in heels, the girl met Elizabeth’s height, eye to eye. Around the women, furniture of rich wood gleamed with the luster of wealth. Upholstery, flawless from disuse, covered the beautifully framed items that were tastefully scattered across the rooms. Each room of the suite spoke of money and taste. Even the single lamp that threw muted light from the corner was a model of understated style. The immediate area was in the disarray of harried intimacy. An empty wine bottle, berries on a bone china tray, and the scent of perfume and damp linen testified to the activity of the previous night. At least some Europeans still respected a Do Not Disturb sign, regardless of noise. The sign had also allowed them to sleep the day away, a dreamless sleep of joyous exhaustion. She looked at the girl, who now had her luggage near the door.

“Before you go, are you ready? Do you need anything?”

In the girl’s purse rested a first class ticket to Miami and credit cards, all with no limit. Elizabeth’s tone was light but warm. The girl reddened slightly from the remembrance of the previous week and the life that she was about to begin. She was also flushed from her internal struggle as her body began to change.

“No, I have everything. Thank you. Thank you a thousand times. This is . . . ,” she trailed off as Elizabeth gave the smallest of frowns.

“Something is missing. Here. This.” She held the girl’s hand and slipped a delicate ring on her finger. The diamond was framed on either side by a strange stone deeper than oxblood. Light swirls of silky color danced in the gems. The antique platinum setting was graceful and worn, like an heirloom.

“I cannot -,” the girl started.

Elizabeth shook her head slowly. “It was my daughter’s. Wear it, and, when you have a daughter you love, give it to her.”

To a girl of such youth and beauty, children were far away where she was going.

“But what if I have no daughter?” she asked. Elizabeth looked briefly at the window.

“Petra, your life will be one of gifts, giving. And receiving. Men will want you. They will try to own you. All of them, drunk with lust, an endless line of their eyes shining with greed,” Elizabeth gave a wintry smile. “You will appeal to their vanity even as they feed you. Savor it. There is no other feeling like it.”

She kissed the girl on the cheek in dismissal and turned to the champagne bottle settling in the silver urn. “Whether you want to or not, you will be a mother of sorts. Many daughters, I think. And when you find one who meets your mettle, you will give her the ring as a gift. In the meantime, the gift you will give is yourself.”

That was fun because I love beer, but, then, I eventually met someone smarter than me (a common event), and, in this case, she married me and convinced me to go back to school–which I did, with enthusiasm.
