Chapter One

Three-year-old Elliott DiStefano hid underneath his mother’s bed when the shouting started. He didn’t understand what the raised voices coming from the living room meant, but instinct told him to hide.

No one ever yelled in his house. Sometimes they used a different tone with him, firmer. “Stop climbing everything, you little monkey,” his mama would say or, “It’s time to pick up your toys and get ready for bed,” Nana would announce. Most of the time he would do what they said, although sometimes they had to ask him twice, especially if what he’d rather do was play a little longer. But they never spoke to him in such a harsh way, and they never told him to shut up like the man in the living room just did to Nana.

Elliott clutched his favorite green army man tightly in his hand. His nana had given him a bath after their early dinner at five, and asked if he was ready to put on his pajamas. “I can do it myself,” he’d told her, and she’d smiled and walked out of the bedroom he shared with Mama, closing the door behind her. She’d promised they could watch a movie and that Elliott could have one of the cookies they’d baked earlier that day for his bedtime snack. But then someone knocked on the door and now there was yelling and no movie and no cookie.

The man’s voice was scary and mean. Nana sounded like she was crying and as Elliott’s fear grew he began to tremble. The yelling got a little louder, followed by a crash and a thud. Then nothing. Was the bad man still there? What if he’d left but planned to come back? Elliott could no longer hear Nana’s voice and he wondered where she went. Did she leave? Did she go with the man? He curled himself into a tight ball and began to cry silent tears.

He had no way of knowing how much time had passed. It was dark under the bed and the crying had tired him out, so he rubbed his stinging eyes and took a little nap. When he woke up he desperately needed to go to the bathroom. His mama and Nana had been so proud of him when he stopped wearing diapers, and he hardly ever had accidents, but he couldn’t risk leaving the safety he’d found under the bed. The minutes ticked by and though he tried his best to hold it, he peed in his pajamas, soaking himself from the waist down. He started to shiver.

It was quiet for a long time and then someone banged on the door and shouted something, but Elliott didn’t know if that was bad or good. He heard voices in the living room, not yelling, just talking, but he remained hidden. Mama would be home soon and she’d know what to do. Elliott decided to wait for her under the bed.

More voices, drawing closer. The door to the bedroom opened. Elliott froze, wondering if it was the bad man coming to get him. He didn’t make a sound as a pair of legs wearing dark blue pants, with a stripe down the side, came into view. If he didn’t say a word or make any noise, maybe the person would leave.

No one would have known he was there if he hadn’t coughed at that very moment. It was a bit dusty underneath the bed, and Elliott already felt a little wheezy, like he might need another dose of his medicine. The legs bent as someone crouched down to look under the bed and Elliott squeezed his eyes shut, terrified of what he might see.

“It’s okay.” The man said, speaking softly. “I’m a policeman. I’m here to help. Can you come out from under there?” Heart pounding, Elliott didn’t answer. He couldn’t.

More footsteps. More dark blue legs. Elliott stayed put. No one was yelling, but Elliott’s heart was still beating fast, and his body felt like Jell-O. A lady wearing a dark blue uniform lay down on the floor next to the bed. “What’s your name?” she asked. She sounded a little like his mama. Her smile was nice like Mama’s, too. He didn’t think a bad person would smile at him, so he answered her. “Ewiott,” he whispered.

“My name is Officer Ochoa but you can call me Regina, okay?” He nodded. “How old are you, Elliott?” she asked. Using the hand not clutching the army man he held up three fingers.

“Three, huh? That’s a good age. I want you to know that you’re safe and no one will hurt you. Can you come out from under there? Here, take my hand.” She stretched out her hand to him and he hesitated but finally touched her palm with his fingers. She urged him gently toward her. Once he was close enough she reached in and grabbed him by his pajama top, pulling him the rest of the way out.

Elliott blinked and let his eyes adjust to the light. One of the officers noticed his wet pajamas, and his shivering, and they wrapped his Thomas the Tank Engine comforter around him, speaking in low, soothing tones.

“I want Nana and Mama,” he said. They could barely hear him.

“What is your mama’s name?” they asked.

“Daisy,” he said. He knew this was true because it was the name other people called her when they said hello. And it was easy to remember because it was the name of a flower, and he liked flowers.

“Do you know your last name?”

He nodded. He and Mama had practiced saying it. “DiStefano,” Elliott said. Maybe it didn’t come out as clearly as it sounded to him because they repeated it back like a question and he nodded.

The officers exchanged a glance and one of them said, “Got it.” The officer who spoke scribbled something on a pad of paper and left the room.

“We’re going to take you to the police station and we’ll call your mom so she can come get you,” Officer Ochoa said. “Okay?”

He wanted his mama more than anything, so he said okay, and when she bent down and scooped him up, comforter and all, he put his arms around her neck. She hurried down the hallway and just before they got to the door, when he would have tried to look for Nana to make sure she was coming too, Officer Ochoa pulled Elliott’s head down to her chest and all he could see was the dark blue of her uniform.

“I was very close to running out the side door and never looking back. Drive straight to the airport and jump on the first available flight out of fucking Virginia.

I had almost talked myself into it when I felt a stirring in the air. It was an intense humming that took my body completely by surprise. The hairs rose up on the back of my neck and I just knew.

She was here.

Maggie.

And just like that, the fuzzy black faded and way and everything clicked into place. My heart thudded into overdrive and my palms started to sweat, so I shoved them into the pockets of my slacks.

Wow! I fell head-over-heels in love with Tyler Blue and his post-it notes. I sobbed like a baby and loved every teary moment.

I was snagged by the title of this read. This is my first Rachel Harris romance and I am wondering how this is the first time one of her books has crossed my path. I must have been hiding under a rock or something because this author is amazingly talented. Her character development is out of this world. From the blue streaks in Sherry’s hair to Tyler’s girl, Rachel’s characters found their way into my heart. Sherry is so much like me it is not even funny. My streaks are in the front of my face and they are blonde not purple, but the open honesty and sass that Sherry exhibits is what I hope I am achieving in my own persona. Tyler is every girls dream. Not for his stardom, but for what Rachel reveals is his true self. Rachel also tackles breast and ovarian cancer in this read. My best friend died at age 32 of breast cancer, she fought the good fight and this book brought good memories back and also is a good reminder to make sure you go to your check-ups ladies.

Vegas, what happens there does not always stay there. After reading this book, even the thought that Tyler and Sherry were not going to be together is preposterous at best. If two people were ever meant to be together it is Sherry and Tyler. I love that Rachel took parts of a real life event and wrote a story around it. The post-it notes were something that Rachel’s husband inspired. Those notes really touched my heart and have inspired me to do the same for someone that I care about. Just letting them know that as each day passes someone is thinking about them is huge. This book is a must read. It is completely worthy of 6-stars. I don’t give out very many 6-star reviews. I am still blowing my nose and drying my tears after this read. It has evoked so much emotion that it has earned a 6-star rating. Bravo Mrs. Harris! I will be one-clicking every single book you have ever written after reading Accidentally Married on Purpose.

In addition to Jessie’s signature love story, ‘Leather and Lace’ brings intrigue and an old family ‘curse,’ as well as a loveable and zany group of supporting characters to the table (it doesn’t hurt that Sawyer is a sizzling hot cowboy, either!).

Jessie keeps upping her game, stepping out into multiple genres, hitting the mark every time. The Lonesome Point books are no exception, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. Five stars all the way!

I take off running with him not far behind. When we reach the stairs, he swoops me up, takes the stairs two at a time, and tosses me on the bed. He stares down at me.

“What?” I ask.
“I said—are you sure?” He puts his hand over his mouth and looks at me, his eyes narrowing. After a long pause, he says, without conceit: “When we make love, it’s gonna change things. I want to know if you’re ready for that before we do.”
I move until I’m on my knees in front of him. “Things have already changed for me. I’m ready … if you are.”
He grins and pulls my dress over my head. “Haven’t you been hearing me? I’ve been ready for you for a long time, Maby Armstrong.”
His hands travel down my chest and he unhooks my bra, sucking in a breath when it falls to the ground. He smiles at my yellow thong with black skulls.
“You’re so edgy,” he smirks, getting on his knees while he pulls them off. He looks up at me. “I plan to spend a lot of time in this general vicinity.” He waves his hand over the area from my lips to my thighs. “And especially here,” he whispers, pulling me into his mouth.
I hold onto his hair for dear life. I nearly fall back on the bed, but his hands are gripped on both cheeks, keeping my buns of nothing close to steel in place.

Robin’s Review

Willow Aster seems to have a great vision for creating diverse and interesting characters and giving life to them on the pages of her novels. Her plot ideas are refreshing. In my opinion, her novels stand out among others in the romance fiction industry. The most recently completed novel written by Willow Aster is titled Maybe Maby. Write down this name. Read the synopsis and reviews. Add it to your “to read” list on Goodreads. I have a feeling readers are going to love it!

Twenty-eight year-old Mabel Anderson has a condition known as Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. She experiences urges to wash her hands with soap and water. She has panic attacks. Organizing and counting help Maby get relief from stress and anxiety. On top of her condition, Maby has had a string of bad luck over the past year. She feels abandoned. She lost her boyfriend, her mother died, and she has no friends. She hates her job at the gift boutique, works long hours and still has no money. She even had a 5 to 7 day stint in a psyche ward. Times have been tough.

The only way I can describe Maby’s life is to compare it to a Seinfeld episode. When it rains, it pours. But when it’s good, it’s really good. All of the sudden, Maby has three men demanding her attention!

Dalton is her ex-boyfriend. She used to love him, but he abandoned Maby for Courtney about a year ago. She has a chance encounter with Dalton, which prompts him to begin texting her.

Saul was a friend to both Dalton and Maby. Saul and Maby crossed the line while she was dating Dalton, so Saul withdrew from her because he wanted to do what was right. Maby has not seen Saul for at least a year when he drops out of the ceiling of the gift boutique where she works! This prompts Saul to begin asking Maby out to dinner.

Coen is the cute barista who works at La Colombe coffee shop. Coen has been flirting with Maby, and he even winked at her while he was writing her name on her coffee cup! Maby wonders what she is doing to garner all of this attention!

Willow Aster is funny! You may not realize this from reading True Love Story or In the Fields, but her sense of humor comes pouring out on the pages Maybe Maby. Although persons with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder suffer from a range of symptoms that may hinder their lifestyle, social life and career, she has chosen to write a light-hearted and humorous story about a quirky young woman and the three men who vie for her attention. She seems to have an excellent understanding of the ins and outs of OCD – the emotions, fears and peculiarities that plague individuals with this condition – and shares this knowledge in her writing. It definitely gives a more realistic feel to the story. It was such a pleasure to read Maybe Maby. It has some dark moments, but this story left me smiling and looking forward to the next novel from Willow Aster. 5 well-deserved stars for Maybe Maby!

Readers of the Blackstone series by Raine Miller first met Neil McManus and Elaina Morrison in Ethan’s and Bryn’s books, but ‘Cherry Girl’ is Neil’s and Elaina’s own story. We finally get to see how Ethan’s best friend and the sweet Elaina that works at BSI got to be where they are.

I was so excited to see that we got to have a back story for Neil and Elaina. I absolutely adore Neil. He is not only gorgeous, he is loving, gentle, and thoughtful. He calls Elaina his ‘Cherry Girl’ because of her hair, and, even though he is seven years older than Elaina, and a friend of her older brother Ian, he is never anything other than sweet and caring to her. He’s like a second brother to her and son to her parents, although Elaina knows from the first time she meets Neil that he is ‘the one’ for her. And, surprise surprise, the feeling, we find later, was absolutely mutual, as time went on and Elaina got older. Their story is filled with love as well as heartache, so much which could have been avoided if they had just communicated. Ultimately, though, ‘Cherry Girl’ is about second chances, and true love, hallmarks of Raine’s books.

Raine Miller does an excellent job of not only creating characters that are extremely real and likable, but of writing about them very realistically, even though she’s telling a story about a culture and place not native to her own life. As ever, Raine has done a fabulous 4.5 star job with ‘Cherry Girl,’ and I can’t recommend this book enough.

‘The Invitation’ is the fifth novella in ‘The Marriage Diaries’ series by Erika Wilde. These are short and sexy reads that revolve around a married couple that have seriously spiced things up in the bedroom.

Jillian and Dean Noble have been married for twenty years. For most couples that have been together that long, things can get a little stale. Determined to keep the fires burning, Jillian stepped things up by seducing Dean at his office in Book 1 of this series, ‘The Awakening.’ Since then, their marriage is better than ever, and the two continue to grow closer. This brings us to ‘The Invitation,’ which refers to an invite to The Players club, a members-only, anything goes group that some of Dean’s friends and colleagues belong to. Sensing that Jillian might be open to this next step, Dean obtains the invitation and gets Jillian to agree to explore the club with him.

I enjoyed the relationship between Jillian and Dean, especially as they are a solid couple, intent on keeping things fresh and exciting in their relationship. There are a few bumps here, even after twenty years, as Jillian pushes Dean past his comfort level in regards to wanting to be more independent. But they are so in tune with each other, and really so invested in their marriage, that these are just hiccups along the way.

I’d never read anything by Erika Wilde prior to ‘The Invitation,’ and it was a nice and easy entree into her work. This was a good solid 4-star read for me, and I would definitely check out the rest of the books in this series.

When they reached the front door of Danny’s house, Liz turned to Ian. “Thanks for the escort. Now, get back over there and enjoy your party. I hope I didn’t ruin it.”

You couldn’t ruin anything if you tried.” Ian leaned in and kissed her cheek. It was warm.

Next time, leave that shovel at home, ya here?” she said as a smile played at the corners of her full lips.

You’re an actor. I might not believe anything that comes out of your mouth,” she said with a smirk and raised eyebrows.

He tsked. “So cynical. I wonder what made you that way?”

Liz tilted her head to one side and her smile broadened as she shrugged. Ian was caught in it, forgetting what he’d even said. There was something about her. Not one thing, but many little things, all of which added up to something really unexpected.

I’ve always been this way. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said that. I didn’t mean to imply that you aren’t a good actor. I honestly don’t know. But I Googled you and you’ve been at it a long time, so I bet you’re pretty talented.”

You Googled me?” Warmth spread through his chest and his own smile broadened. It was ridiculous to be so enamored by this Southern belle. Women searched for him online quite frequently, but he didn’t know those women. This one was standing a few feet away, breathing the same air. He was on the verge of asking her to dinner, but stopped himself just in time. If he couldn’t think of another option, she might be his caregiver and she definitely wouldn’t want to date him then.

I laughed, I cried, and I fell in love with Liz and Ian.

Bravo Meda on an amazing first book!

Play With My Heart is a Hollywood romance with a twist. The twist is that Liz is as far from a Hollywood starlight as one can get even though she has enough money to be one. She is down to earth and not afraid to get her hands dirty. When Ian see’s her karate kicking down her brothers deck he is mesmerized. His feet just start walking towards his neighbor Danny’s place and he just cant stop himself. Her legs are calling his name.

Even though Ian and Liz are a very unlikely match they cannot deny the chemistry that exists between the two of them. Ian knows that Liz is too good for him and yet he wants her more than he can breathe. He knows that Liz is not the love em and leave em type and decides he will do what it takes to keep her. But Liz has not been upfront about her wealth and when Ian’s manager gets a hold of him things take a turn for the worse. Can this love that they share be saved or is it better to just call a spade a spade?

The banter between Liz, Ian, her Ex, and Danny had me laughing out loud. Liz is not afraid to tell it like it is. Meda did an excellent job with character development in this story. I really bonded with Liz and felt like we could be friends in real life. Meda also did an amazing job with the plot twists in the read. I was hit hard with something I did not see coming and I had to grab a box of tissues to dry my crying eyes. Play With My Heart is a sweet southern romance that will sneak into your heart and stay there.
