The End Game

A New Adult Sports Romance

By Kate McCarthy

0fc92-goodreads

Synopsis

“Professional athletes are pillars of their respective communities. They are heroes in the eyes of boys and girls and are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that positively represents their community.”

The public loves a good scandal. Seeing someone fall from the pinnacle of success makes a great headline. No one knows that better than I do. What started out as a promising career in college football, spiralled into scandal and shame.

But being a hero is easier said then done. Especially when there are those who expected to see the great Brody Madden fail. I craved nothing except being the best—willing to do anything to prove them wrong. But I went too far, and I tried too hard, and it broke me.

“At the time of going to print, Jordan Elliott was unavailable for comment.”

I met Brody Madden in my senior year of college. An Australian native on an international scholarship, I was the female soccer sensation with stars in her eyes and no room for a hotshot wide receiver with a chip on his shoulder.

But a heart bursting with ambition and a driving fire to succeed isn’t made of stone. I became his strength, his obsession, and the greatest love of his life. Only I wasn’t there when he needed me most.

This is a story about love and a game that takes everything. Where the path to glory is paved with sacrifice. Where pressure makes you, or breaks you, and triumph is born in the ashes of failure. Where two people’s end game will change everything.

*** 18+ recommended. Contains adult language and adult themes.

Excerpt

Shutting the door, I walk up the slight incline behind Brody. He sits down at the top of the crest and pats the grassy spot beside him.

“You didn’t mention this part when you explained our date.”

“I can’t give away all my secrets now, can I?”

The grass is a thick blanket on the ground and when I stretch out flat, the rich, earthy scent of soil sweeps over me. My eyes lift to the sky and that’s when I get it. It’s perfectly clear and millions of stars are scattered diamonds twinkling above us—bright and magical.

“Besides,” Brody adds as he lies down beside me and sweeps out his arm, encompassing all of it. “How do you explain that?”

He’s right. You can’t. “It’s beautiful.”

“Is this what the stars are like for you back home?”

“No. Back home it’s different.”

“Different how?”

Homesickness swamps me. As beautiful as Texas is, it’s not Australia. Somehow the stars are always brighter where you belong. “Because there’s no place like home.”

“You’re wrong.”

I turn my head and stare at Brody. He’s not looking at me. His head is tilted toward the sky, eyes riveted on the beauty above him. My gaze follows the line of his profile. From the curl of his hair to the perfect line of his nose, down to the mouth I want kissing me right this very instant.

“Home’s not a place where you live. It’s a feeling.” His hand nudges my own. An invitation. I twine my fingers with his and he squeezes them lightly. “Whether it’s where you are, like the football field, or who you’re with.” Brody turns his head, looking at me when he says that. It’s comforting because it unites us somehow, like it’s slowly becoming us against the world. “You can be anywhere, Jordan. Home will follow you if you follow your heart.”

My breath hitches from the beautiful simplicity of his words. Before I can talk myself out of it, I roll over and straddle him. My knees hug his hips, and he stares up at me from my seated position. My pulse pounds a heavy beat in the silence. Thump, thump, thump. It’s so loud in my ears I’m sure he can hear it.

“Show me,” I breathe. A gleam lights his dark eyes, and he sucks his lower lip inside his mouth. He knows what I’m asking, but I spell it out anyway. “Show me one of those wicked things.”

In a move that steals the air from my lungs, he takes both my hands and pulls me down against the broad width of his chest. I’m rolled over and underneath him before I can blink. The squirm in my hips is instinctive, the ache between my thighs relentless.

“Careful what you ask for,” Brody says roughly, every exquisite inch of his body pressing down on mine.

“Why?”

His lips curve. “Because when I give it to you, it won’t be enough.”

My fingers trail down the side of his face, grazing the firm jaw, cupping his cheek in my palm. Foreboding swamps me. I’m falling hard into uncharted territory, and all I see is a broken mess at the end. How is this going to end well for either of us?

“You’re an arrogant man, Brody Madden,” I whisper.

He brings his face to mine, so close I see the brilliant gold in his eyes, like flecks of light in the dark. “And you, Jordan Elliott, will be the woman who brings me to my knees,” he whispers against my lips.

“Show me,” I beg on a shaky breath.

Brody’s lashes lower and he presses a kiss to the corner of my mouth. I tilt my chin upwards, inviting more. Rather than take my lips like I ache for him to do, he shifts sideways and begins nipping at my jaw. His breath is a rasp when he reaches my earlobe, taking it between his teeth. A sharp pinch from his bite forces a whimper from my throat.

“More?” he asks, drawing back to look at me.

“Is that even a real question?”

Brody chuckles as I slide my hand up and around his nape, dragging his mouth down to mine. He groans and kisses me gently, once, and then twice.

“Brody,” I whisper, and he kisses me again, forcing my mouth open hard like he can’t hold himself in check anymore. My hair is loose and he fists chunks of it in both hands while his tongue rubs against mine, hot and aggressive. It’s almost too much, and when I jerk away I’m left gasping.

Brody doesn’t pause. He ducks his head to my neck, his tongue tasting its way down. He finds my pulse point and sucks. It’s fierce and my back arches involuntarily. His mouth shifts further down, moving on before he leaves a mark.

Sitting up, he takes the neckline of my dress in both hands. Five dainty buttons hold it together. A single wrench will rip the flimsy fabric in two. He pauses and looks at me, inhaling raggedly. “Jordan … I don’t want to ruin it.”

My brow furrows. I glance to the hands poised on my dress. They’re tense, veins straining under his skin. My head is lost in a fog when my gaze returns to his face. “Ruin my dress?”

Brody groans, a deep sound of regret and frustration. “Us.”

“You don’t want to ruin us?”

He draws his hands away from the neckline of my dress. “No.”

“How would you do that?”

“I don’t know. I just get this feeling I’m going to.” He shifts away, moving off me and rolling to his back. I turn my head. Brody’s gaze is back on the stars. I watch his throat work as he swallows, the pulse in his neck pounding visibly. “All I’ve ever wanted is to be the best. Whatever it takes. I’ll do anything. That’s how I’ll ruin us, Jordan. How can something so sweet survive a sentiment so dark?”

I roll to my side, holding my head in my hand. Cupping his face with the other, I nudge gently until he’s looking at me. “I won’t let you.”

Brody’s voice is urgent, his eyes fierce. “Promise me.”

I can’t shake the apprehension. It’s set in my bones and when I speak it feels like a lie. “I promise.”

Michel’s Review

The End Game by Kate McCarthy is an outstanding New Adult Sports Romance.  It has the perfect combination of athletics, angst, and romance.  It touches upon some very difficult subject matters that are very real issues people face everyday.  It also adds a bit of an international romance with an Australian Soccer Player and American Football star.  The End Game has everything that readers want in a book.

Brody Madden is the superstar on his college football team.  Not only is he a talented athlete, he is also rich, good looking, and highly in demand with the ladies.  He’s struggling to keep up his grades so that he can remain on the team’s play roster .  When he is assigned a new tutor it may be his chance to improve or it could be the same old bull as before.  Brody has secrets.  He doesn’t want his tutor getting too close to discover what he is hiding, especially when that tutor ends up being a beautiful soccer player.

Jordan has come to America on an international exchange student scholarship for soccer. She barely has enough time to keep up with her own academics let alone tutor a football player.  She had no idea who Brody Madden was.  She may not know who he is but once she met him, she knew what he was hiding.  She knows exactly the kind of help he needs if he will open up and let her in.  But there is a lot more to Brody that even she can’t help.  His secrets may destroy him.  The only thing she can do is love him and hope that this is enough.

I am not going to say too much more about the meat of this story.  It would spoil the unfolding of the plot in The End Game.  I must say that Kate McCarthy did a fantastic job tackling the issues in this story.  My heart broke for both Brody and Jordan.  In the end they are both facing something that is bigger than any game they will ever play. The are facing the game of life.  How they choose the next play will make or break their destiny.

I would highly recommend The End Game by Kate McCarthy.

4 StarMichel’s Review

Making A Play by Victoria Denault is the second book in the Hometown Players series.  This series is based on professional hockey players from Silver Bay, Maine.  If you are a sport romance enthusiast, this series is perfect.

It’s summer and the hometown players are home in Maine for their summer break.  While Jordan Garrison and Jessie Caplan have resolved their problems and moved onto a committed relationship, the other Caplan sisters and Luc Richard are anything but settled. The other two Garrison brothers are building their lives and everyone is home for Cole Garrison’s wedding.

Luc Richard has returned home to Maine facing some very serious problems.  His professional hockey career is floundering.  His contract with his team is in peril.  He may be traded and right now his stats are not looking good.  His past relationship with a model turned into a media monster.  The team management believes that is why his ice time has been weak.  They are blaming him for their poor standings in the NHL.  The truth of the matter is the team as a whole has problems.  His former relationship wasn’t serious in his eyes.  His former girlfriend Nessa used him for more media exposure.  He was okay with that until it started affecting his career.  Now he’s home in Maine with a plan.  He’s intensified his training and he has sworn off women.  He’s got to get his game under control.  What better place to prepare than home with his friends and family.  His safe haven.

Rosie is the youngest of the Caplan sisters. She is the sister that believes in romance, rainbows, and unicorns. She has recently graduated college and is now ready to build her own life.  For years she has had a crush on Luc Richard.  He has only seen her as a friend and little sister.  This summer she is going to give it her best shot to make Luc notice her as a woman.

Both Rosie and Luc’s plans go astray when they return home to Silver Bay.  They can’t stay away from one another but they also can’t be together.  As the summer progresses they will both have to make some life changing choices.

Meanwhile, all is not well in the Garrison family.  There is unrest in Devin’s marriage.  It’s about to implode… which will be the next book in the series.

I have really enjoyed the Hometown Players Series by Victoria Denault.  The characters are dynamic and easy to connect with.  The deep bonds of friendship and family are the root of this series.  The romance is fun, sexy, and heartwarming.

Making A Play can be read as a stand alone romance or in series order.  I highly recommend the Hometown Players series.

“D-a-a-a-d,” Ruby shrieks from upstairs.

It’s a sound that once used to cause all the hair to stand up on my arms and on more than one occasion caused me to go tearing after the call of my youngest daughter thinking she was being murdered by an intruder. I’ve since come to recognize that particular shrill cry as one of excitement and wonder, and I can’t help but grin over what Ruby is possibly into now. At almost five years old, she refuses to accept the concept of a well-mannered, indoor voice and goes balls to the wall in everything she does.

“Is the house on fire, Rubes?” I call out.

Her little voice shouts back to me in a squawk. “No.”

“Have aliens landed?” I keep my voice just loud enough to carry up the stairs but still

decibels below her own.

“No,” she yells, and there . . . right there . . . that’s a little giggle from her.

“Did Timmy fall down the well?”

“No, Dad . . . but you have to come here,” she yells, and, to give her credit, it’s toned down just a bit. When I don’t answer her right away, she calls down in a sweet voice that makes my heart pitter-patter. “Please, Dad.”

Brilliant, little brat. Throwing in some manners to throw me off my game.

“I’ll be right there,” I tell her as I finish the last of Violet’s braid and manage to efficiently bind it with a hair elastic. Leaning over, I place a kiss on her head. “All done, dreamy dwarf.”

Violet leans her head back and gives me an upside-down grin. I love the sprinkle of freckles on her nose and it compels me to kiss her again.

“Do me a favor,” I tell her as I turn toward the living room. “Get the cereal and milk out for me while I go see what your sister needs?”

I don’t bother waiting to see what she does, because Violet has become my metaphorical right hand over the last few months. While she still loves for me to braid her hair and help with her homework, she’s also relished taking on a bit of a caretaker role since the girls moved in with me permanently this past summer.

They’ve been here almost six months and I actually feel like I know what the hell I’m doing now. It wasn’t always like that, and thank God for Kate’s help or I would have gone insane in those first few months of becoming a single parent of two little girls. Kate patiently helped me establish a routine and taught me how to braid hair, distinguish excited shrieks from cries of pain, and most important . . . how to conduct the perfect princess tea party.

I skirt my way through the living room, bending over to pick up one of Ruby’s dolls from the floor, and bound up the stairs taking two at a time. I find Ruby in the bathroom that she and Violet share, bent over the toilet and peering at something.

She shares the same dark hair and gray eyes as Violet, except her locks spring out everywhere in a mass of tiny curls. I have no idea where that came from, but assume it’s a rogue strand of ancestral DNA from either me or my soon-to-be ex-wife, Hensley. Both of us, as well as Violet, have fairly straight hair, so Ruby is definitely dipping into the family gene pool with her wild curls, but damn . . . they totally fit with her personality.

“What’s up?” I ask as I walk over to the toilet.

She straightens up, shoots me a grin, and points. “Look . . . a spider.”

I cautiously take a step forward and lean over, grimacing as I look into the bowl.

And holy shit . . . a spider the size of a T rex is floating on the surface, all eight legs spread out, bent and poised to look as if it’s ready to leap out and attach itself to my face. I suppress a full spinal shudder and reach a tentative hand toward the handle to flush it.

Two things happen almost simultaneously that take at least three years off my life.

The spider somehow manages to skitter across the water, the beast so large it actually creates waves, and Ruby shrieks at me, “No! Don’t kill it, Dad!”

It is with a major blow to my pride—as a man, as a dad, as a six-foot, six-inch professional hockey player nicknamed the Brick because I’m as big and tough as a brick wall—that I jump backward at least two feet from the monster-infested toilet and banshee-crying sprite, causing my hip to slam into the corner of the sink.

“Shit,” I curse loudly, and Ruby’s eyes go round, followed by her lips.

“Oh, Dad . . . that’s a bad word.”

No shit.

I smile at her as I rub my hip. That’s definitely going to leave a bruise. “Sorry, Rubes. I’ll put a dollar in the swear jar.”

She merely nods her acceptance of my apology and turns worried eyes back to the toilet.

“You have to save it,” she implores.

Yeah . . . that’s not going to happen. Not now. Not ever.

“Sure, baby,” I tell her as I take her by the shoulder and turn her toward the bathroom door. I swear the spider glares at me with a million red, evil eyes. “Go on down and get breakfast. Violet’s fixing your cereal. I’ll get the spider out.”

“Okay,” Ruby says as she pulls away from me, but continues to give me instructions. “But let it out the front door and I’ll bring it some food later.”

“Sounds like a plan,” I assure her as she disappears down the stairs. When I hear her feet hit the bottom landing, I turn toward the toilet, intent on a quick flush to put me out of my misery.

Except when I look in the bowl, the fucking thing is gone.

I’ll just go ahead and admit it. Spiders scare the living hell out of me. I have no clue why, and while I would battle the biggest, baddest monster to the death for my daughters, I’d much rather flush a little spider down the toilet.

I immediately scramble backward out of the bathroom, grabbing the doorknob and shutting it quickly behind me. My heart is racing a million miles an hour, the thought of that furry hell beast now loose in my house.

Just one more thing on the list of things I still need to do today.

Get the girls dressed and ready for school.

Take the girls to school.

Clean up the spilled laundry detergent.

Finish the laundry.

Arm myself with a can of hairspray and a lighter to torch the rogue spider in the bathroom.

Pick up my dry cleaning.

Work out.

Team practice.

Pick up the girls from Kate and Zack’s house.

Dinner.

Baths.

Story time and cuddling.

Go to bed because I’ll be exhausted.

Easy as fucking pie, and I’ll get up and do it all over again the next day with a smile on my face. I’m finding life as a single parent isn’t as daunting as I thought it would be and I’ve finally found my groove.

Every time I think I have a favorite hero from one of Sawyer Bennett’s books she goes and releases a new book.  I instantly fall head over heels for the new hero she created.  I don’t know how she does it but her men just keep getting better.

Ryker is the fourth book in the Cold Fury Hockey series.  Ryker Evans is the new goalie for the Cold Fury Team.  Although he is new to the team, he is a seasoned veteran that is closer to retirement than making a big name for himself.  He has a solid reputation as a goalie although he blew the winning goal last season.  His teammates may not believe in him but his general manager, Gray Bannon, does.  She knows he has what it takes to take the Cold Fury to the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Ryker is a busy man.  He’s playing the best hockey he has ever played.  He is also raising his two young daughters and providing a stable home for them.  He doesn’t have time for hookups or one night stands.  He wants a committed relationship that has room to grow.  He wants Gray Bannon.  He knows she is the last person he should be pursuing but her sharp mind, compassionate spirit, and sexy body has him thoroughly entranced.

Gray Bannon is a certified genius.  She is the first female general manager for a professional hockey team and it’s not because her father owns the team.  She has a scientific formula for building a winning team.  Some may not understand the statistics but she is certain it is going to work.  Ryker Evans gets it.  He gets her.  He is the sexiest man she has ever met.  He is off limits.

Ryker and Gray engage in a sizzling hot affair that can either burn them both or become a warm up to a happily ever after.  Gray may lose her job and damage future hope for women in professional hockey.  Ryker may have to retire before he is ready, especially since he is having his best professional season.

Throw in some hostile team members, an arrogant assistant general manager, a clueless ex wife, and two adorable little girls and you have a fantastic book.  Ryker Evans is beyond sexy and Gray Bannon knows how to handle his sexy.

Sawyer Bennett has once again delivered an exciting page turner.  Read Ryker! It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.  I would highly recommend The Cold Fury Hockey series.  These dynamic players know how to play more than a great game of hockey.  They know how to play your heart and win!

USA Today and New York Times Best-Selling Author, Sawyer Bennett is a snarky southern woman and reformed trial lawyer who decided to finally start putting on paper all of the stories that were floating in her head. Her husband works for a Fortune 100 company which lets him fly all over the world while she stays at home with their daughter and three big, furry dogs who hog the bed. Sawyer would like to report she doesn’t have many weaknesses but can be bribed with a nominal amount of milk chocolate.

Sawyer is the author of several contemporary romances including the popular Off Series, the Legal Affairs Series and the Last Call Series. She will be releasing her third book in the Cold Fury Hockey Series with Random House Loveswept, June 2015.

The Year I Became Isabella Anders

Synopsis

Isabella Anders has always been the girl that never fit in. Most days she feels invisible, especially when she’s around her older sister, Hannah, who catches the eye of everyone, including Kai and Kyler, the boys who live next door.

Isabella has had a crush on Kyler for years, but knows he’ll never see her as anything more than Hannah’s little sister, unless she finds a way to standout.

When Isabella gets an offer from her grandmother to travel overseas for the summer, she seizes the opportunity, hoping she’ll discover more about herself. And she does, but not in the way that she expected.

Three months later, Isabella returns home an entirely new person. The change is enough to catch both Kyler and Kai’s attention. But Isabella is still struggling with what she discovered over the summer and until she deals with the truth, she’ll never truly be herself.

Isabella Teaser 3-2

Excerpt

Cold rain instantly soaks through my clothes as I skip down the driveway, moving awkwardly, because I can’t bend one knee. I don’t care though. Rain is awesome. And it smells so great. Seriously, if I could, I’d skip around in the rain all the time.

My hair is drenched by the time I reach the sidewalk, and the flip-flops splash water from the puddles all over the backs of my legs. It reminds me of this one time Kai and I walked home in the rain and we intentionally splashed in all the puddles.

“Isa! What are you doing?!” Someone shouts with a hint of laughter in their voice.

My head whips to the side as I stumble to a stop.

Kai is standing out on the side deck, beneath the shelter of the roof, and I think he might be laughing at me, but the veil of rain crashing from the cloudy sky makes it difficult to see.

“Going to the paint store!” I shout then wave at him and start to skip off again.

“Are you crazy?” he calls out. “You can’t walk to town in the middle of a rainstorm.”

I sigh and slow down again. “I’m not walking! I’m skipping!” My eyelashes flutter against the rain.

“Can’t you wait until it at least stops raining?” he asks, shaking his head as I jump into a puddle.

“No way! It’s either the rain or being in the house with Hannah. And I choose the rain. Besides, rain is awesome!”

I can hear him laughing all the way from over here.

“Would you get your ass over here?” He waves at me to come to him. “I’ll drive you if you really want to go. But it’s too damn cold for you to be playing around in the rain, no matter how cute you look.”

Cute? Did he just call me cute?

Robin’s Review

When I learned that Jessica Sorensen had a young adult novel about to release, I jumped at the chance to participate as a reviewer on her release day! Sorensen is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author. She has a wealth of writing experience, as evidenced by the more than 50 titles she has published. Sorensen is a talented author, and it shows in The Year I Became Isabella Anders. This story is really good. It’s one of those novels that ends too quickly and leaves you yearning for more.

Our protagonist is seventeen-year-old Isabella Anders. Isa has always been the odd one out in her family. Her interests lie in manga, comic books, zombies, blogging and a boy who lives next door – Kyler Meyers. She’s a tomboy who wears hoodies and baggy clothes – that is until she spends the summer in Europe with her Grandma Stephy. Isa opens herself up to a world of self-discovery and excitement, and when she returns home, her dramatic changes catch the attention of not one, but both of the boys who live next door.

One of the most interesting aspects of The Year I Became Isabella Anders is that this story is multifaceted. Sorensen includes several subplots which combine for one very interesting story. Don’t be misled by the synopsis. It’s accurate, but there is whole lot more going on with Isabella than mentioned in the synopsis. Isa has a complicated, confusing and somewhat mysterious life. There are many things to ponder about our protagonist, and I have many questions that I am dying to have answered! If you love mystery and intrigue, this story has it in spades!

And can I talk about those boys who live next door? Kai and Kyler Meyers are absolutely swoon worthy! Jessica Sorensen always creates interesting and complex characters, and these boys are no exception! Except for the final chapter, this novel is told from Isabella’s perspective. First person point of view tends to create mystery because, as readers, we never know exactly what the other characters are thinking. We never truly know the motivations behind their actions. Kai Meyers has me especially intrigued. Although it’s not too angsty and intense, I should probably mention there is a love triangle in The Year I Became Isabella Anders.

Isabella Anders is a complex protagonist, and even with a second novel on the way, she is already showing character development. Although this story has a minor cliffhanger, it’s not at all unbearable like some cliffhangers can be. I really can’t think of anything negative to say about this novel. Jessica Sorensen will soon be publishing a second novel about Isabella Anders – The Year of Falling in Love – and I can’t wait to delve into more story about these characters. The Year I Became Isabella Anders is a 5-star novel, and I’ll be adding to my list of 2015 favorites!

Michel’s Review

It’s no secret that I am a huge fan of Jessica Sorensen’s books.  Every time she releases a new book or starts a new series I instantly add it to my “Must Read Now” list.  I devour the books and am left wanting more.  Jessica Sorensen has a gift of creating characters that come to life and jump off the pages.  Her characters are always complex individuals with multiple layers to their personalities.  She adds adversity and emotional angst that makes them vulnerable.  She allows them to take their personal journey with humility and strength.  Throughout their journeys the characters grow as individuals and become the people they were meant to be.  She does not hide the ugly realities of their lives and portrays those realities so that the reader is completely sympathetic to their plights.  I always find myself deeply connected with her characters and their stories.

The Year I Became Isabella Anders is fantastic.  It’s a story of a young woman discovering her self worth and embracing her inner beauty.  It’s a story of a girl becoming a strong young woman brave enough to face the realities of her life.  A story of a young woman embracing change with a natural grace.  She is also learning to open up and allow others into her small world to make it brighter.

Isabella Anders has always been the odd duck.  She doesn’t fit into the mold her family has tried to put her into.  She has lived in her perfect older sister’s shadow all of her life.  She has failed to inherit the perfection her mother seems to possess at all times.  She is an outcast among her peers in school.  One summer changes everything for Isabella.

A trip abroad with her grandmother and cousin is the best thing to happen in her life.  For once she is treated as valuable individual.  She is appreciated for her unique individuality.  Along the way she learns to look at herself in a new way.  Her cousin helps her perfect her outer beauty.  Her grandmother teaches her to cherish her inner beauty.  As the summer progresses, Isabella transforms into a confident beautiful young woman.  But she also learns that her place in her family is much more complicated than not fitting into their mold.  There are secrets that even her own grandmother is not privy to.  Secrets only her parents can answer.  Secrets that explain why Isabella Anders is the way she is.  Secrets that could either free her or destroy her.

When Isabella returns home a newly improved Isabella, the Meyers Brothers take notice.  Her life long crush, Kyler Meyers, finally sees Isabella as a beautiful girl.  Kai Meyers has always seen who Isabella Anders is, now he must show her that he has always had his eyes wide open.  But all is not as it seems in the Meyers household.  They too have their secrets.

As Isabella’s friendships with Meyers boys grow, the mysteries of her own past are not the only ones she wants to solve.  She too has her eyes wide open now.  She’s ready to handle every secret shoved under the rug.  She’s ready to handle the Meyers Brothers.  She’s ready for anything life has to throw at her.  Her biggest choice is which Meyers boy will hold her hand and capture her heart.

I loved this book.  It is a story of a young woman finding herself while uncovering secrets that have been hidden to long.

The Year I Became Isabella Anders ended on a cliffhanger that leaves the reader dying for more.  Look for The Year of Falling In Love – book 2 soon!  Meanwhile…enjoy this book!

Excerpt

The way the mirror on my dressing table is angled gives me the perfect opportunity to watch Liam undress. This is my favorite ritual, morning and night. I’ll take the chance anytime I can to watch him methodically peel off his clothes. He’s a man who unties his shoes first, placing them back on the shoe rack. His socks are next, followed by his shirt. My peeping tom ways are often rewarded when he’s wearing a dress shirt. Not only do I get to watch the muscles in his back flex as he pushes each button through the ridiculously small hole, but his undressing is prolonged. He takes his t-shirt off the same way every time and when he pulls the collar from behind and the shirt slowly lifts inch by inch, my mouth waters. My lips become dry and my knuckles ache from my hand clutching my hairbrush. The clank of his belt buckle and the almost too silent pop of the fabric from his button down jeans have me staring intently into the mirror. My make-up is only half off, my mouth wide open and I’m the picture of someone who needs serious help. And let’s not get started on the way he gets dressed…

His jeans drop to the ground and he kicks them aside, depriving me of the chance to watch him bend over to pick them up. I find myself leaning into my vanity to get a better look as his thumbs dip into the waistband of his boxer briefs. Men find women’s lingerie sexy and appealing. It turns them on. The look and feel teases them and they love it. I never thought about men in their underwear until I saw Liam in his. Over the years he’s maintained his muscles, yet has a more defined physique. His boxers aren’t sagging in places they shouldn’t. My husband could be an underwear model with his form fitting briefs, although I don’t know if I’d want the world to see what he only shares with me. The cotton fabric pools at his feet. He steps out of them and turns around, showing me his naked body… a body only for my eyes, my hands, my lips and any other part of me.

“How long are you going to stare at me?” I swallow hard as my eyes flash to his and a wicked grin plays across my lips.

“Until my eyes no longer work,” I tell him. “Or until you tell me to stop.”

“Hmm that’ll be never,” he says as he walks near me.

EXCERPT

“Why are you both home so soon? I thought it was dinner and a movie?”
Alex chewed on her lip as Will lifted his eyebrows and pushed his hand through his hair. “Yeah, I don’t think we’re going to be allowed back into Joey’s Pizza anytime soon,” Will said as Alex glared at him.
“Why?” Grace asked as she leaned her body into me. God, I loved the feeling of being with her. It allowed me to forget everything else going on in my life.
“Do you want to tell them, Will? Or should I?” Alex asked, hands snapping to her hips as she narrowed her eyes at Will.
Will walked to the kitchen as he lifted his hand and said, “You go right ahead, I’m getting a beer. Noah, want one?”
As much as I wanted one, I had given up drinking after I went on the drunken binge a few months back.
“No thanks, I don’t drink anymore.”
Grace looked up at me and gave me the sweetest smile.
Alex made her way over to the chair and sat as Grace took my hand in hers and led us to the sofa. Sitting, she motioned for Alex to begin with her story.
Alex cleared her throat and took a quick peek at Will. “Well, I’ve been having morning sickness, but it seems to come and go. It came tonight at Joey’s Pizza. I was feeling nauseous. Will here, he decides it’s funny seeing me gag when I see this guy … picking his—”
Alex covered her mouth and made a gagging sound as Will attempted to hold in a laugh as he walked up.
Dropping her hand, Alex yelled, “Stop it, Will!”
Holding up his hands, he shook his head. “I’m sorry! I can’t help it.”
Letting out a frustrated sigh, Alex continued on. “Anyway, Will here kept talking about it, even when I begged him to stop. We were standing in the buffet line and Will told me to look at the guy. I did.”
“Oh holy hell,” Grace whispered, “you didn’t?”
Slowly nodding her head, Alex whispered back, “I did.”
“Then Will gagged, because he looked at the guy who was… oh God … it’s hitting me again.”
Grace and I both leaned away from Alex.
Alex jumped up and ran into the half bath down the hall as Grace and I watched her and then turned back to Will. He was lifting his beer to his lips as he took a long drink and smiled.
“Long story short, she threw up all over the buffet. Twice.”
“Gross,” Grace and I said.
Letting out a chuckle, Will said, “That’s not the worst of it.”
Shaking her head, Grace asked, “How could it be any worse?”
“Other people throwing up.”Copyright Kelly

Hot SEAL 01 (500)

Excerpt

Dane could only stare at the front of the room and the woman who’d walked in behind the colonel.
He wanted to blink and make the apparition go away, but it didn’t work that way. Ivy was no apparition. She was a flesh and blood woman with long dark hair and curves he’d once worshipped with his mouth and hands. Curves he’d been unable to get enough of at one time.
He remembered hot, dark, sweaty nights between the sheets with her. He remembered thinking she was the center of his universe, and then he remembered the pain that had sliced through him when he’d found out he wasn’t the center of hers.
She stared back at him coolly—and then she looked away. He stiffened, but only for a moment.
Fuck her.

Barely Breathing
by Brenda Rothert
Pre-Order on Amazon

People see what they want to see. A burly guy with tats and a permanent scowl is probably a criminal and an asshole, right? And I can’t fault ‘em, because in my case, they’re right. My world revolves around righting the wrongs of my past. Atoning for my selfish stupidity. And it’s enough.

Until I meet Viv – a woman who sees right through me. She’s not scared or intimidated. A woman like her is way too good for a man like me. But life as I knew it won’t be enough anymore. I realize now that before I met her, I wasn’t really living. Hell, I was barely breathing.

Chapter One

Kane

My bartender stared a second too long at a woman’s big tits and the drink he was pouring overflowed onto the bar. He found a towel under the counter, wiped the spill up and then handed the drink to a waitress, sloshing more liquid out of the glass on the way. She glared at him and I made my move.

“You’re the worst fuckin’ excuse for a bartender I’ve ever seen,” I snapped at him. “Who the fuck hired you?”

“Uh…Mr. Winters did.” His eyes widened with fear as he looked up at me. I was used to this reaction.

“Figures. He’s too damn soft. You pour about as smooth as a teenage kid jerks off,” I growled. “Get the fuck outta my sight and don’t come back.”

He ducked and ran. I pushed through the group of waitresses and customers and got behind the bar. Orders were shouted at me as I poured, mixed and shook my way into catching up the backlog.

At Six, the club I was part owner of, we served light food, but drinks were our main fare. And at a place with a line down our New York City block every night of the week, we couldn’t afford to hire shitty bartenders.

By the time I was caught up and one of the waitresses came back to relieve me behind the bar, I had a line of sweat across my brow. I wiped the sleeve of my white t-shirt across it and stormed across the floor of the club.

The good thing about being me was not even having to say excuse me. When people saw me coming, they fucking moved. As the crowd on the dance floor parted, I made my way through and headed upstairs to Jeff’s office.

I pushed open the door, yelling at Jeff before I’d even entered the room. “Where the fuck did you find that bartend—”

Jeff’s dick flopped out of the mouth of the woman on her knees in front of him as she gave me a surprised look. Jeff scowled at me.

“Jesus, Kane, you heard of knocking?” he barked.

I glared at him. “You heard of not getting head from a waitress when we’ve got a full house down there?”

Amanda bowed her head and scooted back. Jeff, who was leaning against the edge of his desk with his suit pants around his ankles, wove a hand into her hair and eased her back toward him.

“Come back later, Kane,” he said. “I’ll be able to give you my full attention then.”

“No need. I just fired that piece of shit bartender you hired.”

“Again? Dammit, that’s the third one in a month.”

“Third one who sucked ass. And I didn’t fire the first one, she quit.”

“After you said Helen Keller could pour better than her.”

I stared at the dark wood door frame of his office and shrugged. “Truth hurts, man. I’m gonna walk the grounds.”

“Just don’t fire any bouncers. We need all of ‘em for that private party this weekend.” He groaned and I looked over. Amanda was already back to bobbing up and down his rod.

I sighed and headed back to the stairway. Sure as hell wasn’t the first time I’d seen Jeff get a blowjob. We’d been friends for almost ten years, and we’d had some wild times before settling down in New York to open Six with four silent partners.

And now, almost a year in, the club was my life. I was here at two every afternoon to prepare for open and head up a floor meeting for the staff. Rarely did I leave before three AM.

This place was my only shot. I had to give it my all in order to sleep at night. Or in my case, in the morning when I dragged my ass in from work. I didn’t drink, so it was never that I was hungover. The long hours of overseeing club operations seven days a week just got to me sometimes. Jeff saw to the books and HR, and I took care of everything that went down on the floor.

“Kane,” a male voice called as I got to the bottom of the stairs that led to the main level of Six. One of our hosts, Dominic, was rushing toward me. “That private party in the suite upstairs brought in some packaged alcohol. What should I do?”

“Kick em’ out.”

“Yeah, but it’s—”

“I don’t give a fuck if it’s the president.” I looked down at him. “It’s in the contract they signed. No outside alcohol. You need me to do it?”

He shook his head. “No, sir. I can handle it.”

I nodded my approval. Dominic was a college student who busted his ass here and pulled good grades. He was a good kid. Funny how I saw him as a kid when he was twenty-two and I was thirty-four. But I’d lived a hell of a lot in my years on this Earth. A little too much at times.

My next stop was the kitchen, where I watched the staff silently from a corner. I made sure the food was leaving the shelf and heading to customers table shortly after being plated. We only served light food to most of our customers. Those in our VIP rooms could get anything their rich little hearts desired, though, whether it was a perfectly grilled steak or a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. We went out of our way to make Six a cut above the rest.

The sound of muffled, angry male voices caught my ear and I turned for the kitchen’s swinging door. I’d just gotten it open when I heard glass shattering. Motherfucker. I wasn’t about to allow a bar fight in my upscale club.

A crowd was clustered around a table near the bar and I pushed my way through. A couple of frat boys were throwing punches at each other and a third one held a broken beer bottle up, trying to hold off two more pimpled brats.

“Gimme that, you pussy,” I muttered, pulling the broken bottle out of the guy’s trembling hand.

I put it on the table and grabbed each of the two fighters by the collars of their shirts.

“Get your asses out of here,” I said as I dragged them toward the door. “Go spend your lunch money getting wasted somewhere else.”

Two of my bouncers, Cecil and Dan, approached. They each took one punk and finished dragging them to the door. I looked back and saw that another bouncer was sweeping the broken glass into a dustpan.

With that fire out, I decided to patrol the outside of the building. If nothing else, I needed some fresh air. Wiping the asses of adults all the time was fucking exhausting.

Vivian

Eric raised his glass in the air and smiled, his eyes full of meaning as they met mine.

“To new beginnings,” he murmured.

He clinked his glass against mine and raised it to his lips, tossing back a big drink of the amber liquid. I sipped my wine, my heart hammering in my chest. I had a very good feeling about him.

Could it really happen so quickly? This blind date was about the hundredth I’d gone on since accepting a job at a family law firm in New York City. I usually knew right away whether I’d met someone who’d make a good friend or someone who I should draft up a restraining order for at the end of the date.

Never had I met a man I could see a second, third and fourth date with. Until now.

Eric Masterson checked every box on my list for the perfect man. He was a good listener with a great sense of humor, had a great career as a stock broker and was very easy on the eyes. With dark, close-cropped hair, an athletic build and warm brown eyes, he’d drawn a second look from the women at the table next to us when we’d arrived. For the first time since arriving in the Big Apple ten months ago, I actually hoped for a goodnight kiss at the end of a date.

“So, Vivian,” Eric started.

“Viv,” I reminded him. “My friends call me Viv.”

“I’m hoping to be more than a friend.”

I felt a goofy grin spreading across my face. “Well, you’re off to a great start.”

“Another drink?”

I sighed and looked at my watch. “I wish I could, but I have an early hearing.”

I liked setting up dates for Thursday nights so I could beg off in the name of work when I needed to, but in this case, it was because I actually had to. It was after eleven, and my alarm relentlessly sounded at six every weekday.

Eric’s face fell. “Oh. I thought—”

“I really do have to get up early,” I said, putting a hand on top of his on the table. “Can we get together again sometime soon?”

His expression brightened. “Yeah? How soon? Wanna share a cab?”

“Sure. If we’re going in the same direction.”

He signed the check and tucked his credit card back inside his wallet. “What if we both go in the direction of my place?”

I bit the inside of my lip, forcing myself not to let my defeat show. He thought he was getting laid tonight. That explained his enthusiasm.

Dating was the worst. THE. WORST. I needed to take a month off of it and watch chick flicks and eat takeout in my pajamas. I was persistent and damned if I was a quitter. People at work even called me tenacious. But dating required a streak of masochism and I was over it. For now, anyway.

“I think I live in the other direction,” I said, getting up from the table. “Thanks for a nice evening, Eric.”

I didn’t even have to turn around to know he was behind me, pushing his way past people to catch up. I’d just pushed open the front door to leave when I felt a hand grabbing my wrist.

“Vivian, don’t go.”

I glared at him and pulled away. “I have to work in the morning. I need to get home.”

The cool spring air on my face was a welcome change from the stuffiness of the crowded club. I headed for the curb to hail a cab.

“What the hell just happened?” Eric demanded from behind me.

I turned. His easy smile was gone. Now his expression was pissed.

“I’m looking for more than just sex,” I said, crossing my arms. “I thought you knew that when we set up this date.”

“Yeah, well…maybe you shouldn’t have flirted so hot and heavy over dinner, then.”

I felt my eyes bulge with indignation. Stepping away from the curb, I approached Eric and pointed at his chest.

“I did no such thing, you asshole.”

He rolled his eyes and smirked at me. “Please, Vivian. The skirt? The way you licked your lips and played with your hair?”

My anger grew stronger, clouding my better judgment. I grimaced at Eric with disgust and took another step toward him. “What? Seriously? Because I’m wearing a skirt? I’m a twenty-eight-year old woman with a pretty decent vocabulary. If I wanted you to fuck me, I would have said, ‘Fuck me, Eric’. Instead, I’m saying fuck you.”

I rarely lost my cool, but the all too prevalent male mindset that a woman in a skirt was desperate to be bedded was just too infuriating to be ignored.

“You’re hot when you’re angry,” Eric said, wiggling his brows at me.

I rolled my eyes. He wasn’t worth my time. I was turning back toward the curb when he reached out and pulled my cell phone from my hand.

“What’ve we got here?” he said, holding it up and out of my reach.

“Give me my phone.”

He backed up several steps and I followed. I’d been very wrong about this guy. As he reached the corner of the Six building, Eric gave me a look that was supposed to be playful and disappeared into the alley.

I took a breath, reminding myself to keep cool. I couldn’t afford an involvement in an altercation that could jeopardize my job. But that was my phone and he was an asshole, and I wasn’t about to get trampled this way.

“Eric,” I said, my voice icy as I entered the alley, “give me my phone or I’m calling the cops.”

My breath whooshed from my lungs and my back hit the brick wall.

“You’re a cocktease.” Eric’s breath was hot on my face. He clamped a hand over my mouth and shoved a knee up between my legs.

My blood ran cold at the unwelcome contact. The phone suddenly seemed like a very stupid reason to follow an unknown man into a dark alley.

“Who’s an asshole now?” Eric’s expression was amused and angry at the same time.

I screamed, even though his hand muffled the sound. As I flailed, I realized my feet weren’t even on the ground anymore. He held me against the wall with his knee between my legs and his weight in front of me.

This was a nightmare. The front door of Six was maybe a hundred and fifty feet away, but it might as well have been a hundred and fifty miles. I was helpless and alone in a dark alley with a man who looked like he was just beginning to amuse himself with me.

He pulled roughly on the fabric of my shirt and I felt buttons strain and then pop off. In an instant, his hand left my mouth and wrapped around my throat.

“If you scream, I’ll choke you,” he said in a low tone.

“You’re a fucking psycho.” My voice wavered, betraying my panic.

Eric pressed on my throat and I felt my airway constricting.

“Say it,” he ground out. “Say ‘fuck me, Eric’.”

“No.” My refusal came out as a whimper and I felt the pressure on my throat increasing.

Terror washed over me like a tidal wave. I was going to get raped and possibly murdered in this alley. In a split second, I realized I didn’t appreciate what I had. My parents loved me, I had good friends and I was kicking ass at an amazing job. I’d wasted it by worrying about whether I’d be the next of my friends to get married or not.

Eric was working his hand under my skirt when suddenly, mercifully, the pressure on my throat subsided. I dropped to the ground and gasped in air. Had he changed his mind?

“The fuck’s your problem, douchebag?” a deep male voice growled. Eric’s body hit the ground like a sack of bricks and I heard a loud thudding sound.

Eric cried out in pain and curled into a ball. A large man’s burly, built frame bent and leaned over him.

“I’ll fuck you,” he spat out. “How ‘bout a baseball bat in your ass, motherfucker?”

I panted and wrapped my arms around myself. I was saved. This man had saved me from a nightmare. He pressed a large, dark boot to Eric’s throat and raised his face to look at me.

“You okay?”

I nodded, the lump in my throat preventing me from finding my voice.

“You want me to spend some more time with him, or you wanna press charges?”

His gravelly tone made my stomach somersault nervously. I bunched my hands into fists and steeled myself. “Press…” I stopped to cough. “Press charges.”

He nodded and pulled Eric up by his hair, knocking his head against a metal fire escape stairway. Eric groaned and crumpled.

“Sorry, my hand slipped,” the man said unapologetically, dragging Eric up and out of the alley.

As soon as we got back inside Six, he shoved Eric into the arms of another burly man and told him to call the police and babysit until they arrived.

He turned to me then and I took him in, holding my torn shirt closed. He was tall and broad, with a bald head and tattoos snaking out from beneath his white t-shirt and up under the collar. His short facial hair was dark.

As I studied him, he did the same to me, his hazel eyes steely. Everything about this man was intimidating. At least, it should have been. What I saw was my savior. The man who’d saved me from a horror that would’ve changed me forever, if I’d survived it.

“You’re…” I cleared my throat and tried to ignore the staring onlookers. “Thank you. What’s your name?”

“Kane.”

“Thank you, Kane.”

Tears welled in my eyes and I looked at the floor.

“Come on,” he said, waving a hand and turning. I clutched the two sides of my shirt and followed him through the darkened club. Lights flashed on the people around me raising glasses in drunken celebrations.

Kane went down a long, dimly lit hallway and walked through a door. I hesitated for a second, but followed.

We were in a room with rich, wood paneled walls and a large desk with a single stack of papers on it. It looked like a vacant office.

After he opened a door, Kane pulled out a big flannel shirt and walked my way. He held it out and I just stared at him.

“Take it,” he said gruffly.

I reached out and grabbed it, my other hand still holding my shirt closed.

“Bathroom’s over there,” he said, pointing at another door on the other side of the room.

Silently, I walked over to the bathroom and went in. It was a sanitary white space made of marble and limestone. I slipped the shirt on and buttoned it. It covered me to mid-thigh and hung down past my hands. After I’d rolled up the sleeves, I walked out and saw Kane standing next to the desk. His expression was hard to read, but it seemed uncomfortable.

“Yours?” He held up my cell phone.

I nodded and he brought it to me, also handing over a pen and paper.

“Write down your name and number and I’ll have the cops contact you about a statement. You don’t have to stay since I was a witness. Unless you think you need to go to the hospital, I mean.”

I shook my head. “No, I just want to go home.”

“Can I offer you a ride?”

My mouth hung open as I tried to think of a response. Kane had saved me, and I was beyond grateful, but right now I didn’t want a strange man driving me anywhere. I still felt overly exposed.

“That’s…no, you don’t have to…I can just catch a cab. You’ve done more than enough already. Thank you again.”

I wrote my contact information on the pad of paper, and when I looked up, Kane was giving me me a wry look that bordered on a smile.

“I didn’t mean me. Our driver will take you home.” He walked over to the door and opened it.

I followed him out a side door to a black SUV. He opened a passenger door and nodded toward the vehicle, encouraging me to get in.

“Lex, take her home, please,” he said, his clipped tone all business.

“Yes sir, Mr. Kane,” a voice called from the driver’s seat.

I climbed in and met his eyes again. “Thanks again, Kane. I mean, Mr. Kane.” I gripped my phone tightly, his unwavering gaze unnerving me. “Thank you.”

He just nodded and closed the door.

“Where to, ma’am?” a friendly man’s voice called from the front seat.

I gave him my address and he headed down the darkened alley. The alley that was now burned into my mind as the place I’d almost lost a piece of myself. And also the place where a strong, compassionate stranger had kept me intact.

Excerpt:

“Where did you learn to dance?” she asked.

He couldn’t say that his very first manager had hired dance instructors to work with him to perfect his on-stage moves and that, more recently, he’d hired a “male entertainer” to show him how to make his moves sexier. Instead, he opted for something he could tell her.

“My grandparents owned an Arthur Murray dance studio. I spent my summers there. When I was thirteen, I thought it would be the happening place to pick up girls, so I paid attention. I learned a lot.”

“I’ll bet you were smooth even back then.”

“I thought I was.” He smiled at her. “I see the pictures now and think ‘dork in braces.’”

She laughed. “I can’t imagine it.”

“True story.”

Because he wasn’t digging even the small bit of distance between them, Jesse flattened his palm to her back, sliding down to the sway in her spine, bringing her petite frame and sweet curves even closer. He didn’t usually have any trouble controlling his cock. Now it had a mind of its own, and he ached to slide all of her against every inch of him too badly to care if she felt that.

When he arched into her, she gasped, then flattened herself against him. The friction as they swayed together blew his mind. She glanced up at him, and he curled a finger under her chin to bring her face beneath his. He really had to restrain himself from grabbing her ass. Public displays didn’t bother him but that sort of thing might bug her. And he wasn’t supposed to be drawing attention to himself.

“If you don’t want me to kiss you, say something now.”

“I…I can’t.”

Jesse eased back, trying not to let the surprisingly visceral disappointment consume him. “You can’t let me kiss you?”

“No, I can’t say anything.”

His entire body tensed. He wanted to throw her to the ground and get inside her in the next thirty seconds. Sure he liked sex. Loved it. But this compulsion to take off Bristol’s clothes and make her scream out his name seemed way beyond any normal urge.

He took her face in his hands. God, she was so small in his grip. Delicate. Lovely. Her stare clung to him, her green eyes so open and earnest. She wasn’t playing a game, wasn’t merely interested in him because of who he was. She seemed to like him.

Now was a really crappy time to decide that he seriously liked a girl. Jesse knew he should walk away. But Deke had advised him to make all the parts of his life meaningful. Bristol Reese might be the most meaningful thing he’d felt in years.
