9781501105791From USA TODAY bestselling author Renée Carlino (Before We Were Strangers), a warm and witty novel about a struggling writer who must come to grips with her past, present, and future after she discovers that she’s the inspiration for a pseudonymously published bestselling novel.

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J. Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

 Excerpt

During the winter we pretended our way through the classics, read every popular kid’s book and by spring of our sixth grade year, the spring of all the rain, we were ready to be outside and explore again. There was a creek about half a mile back from our houses, past the tree line. Because of all the rain that year, it had become more of a river with the strongest currents right behind where we lived. Every adult warned us to be careful, even my dead-beat dad would say, “You better use that big brain of yours and stay out of the creek. You want to go swimming, you can go to the pool in town.”

Funny he would say that because the community pool was a seven-mile bike ride and it cost three dollars to get in. There was no way I was going unless Leila, Jax’s mom gave us a ride and even then, I would have to borrow the money to get in. Frankly, going to the town pool was a pipe dream. It became a myth to us, a fantasy like Disneyland or Europe. Jax and I would try to imagine what it was like to go there.

“I bet they sell popsicles and popcorn and they probably have clowns too,” I said.

It was a warm day; we had made a picnic in the weeds. I laid out my Toy Story sleeping bag I’d had from when I was a kid. Jax brought a jar of applesauce and I brought Fun Dip that my dad had 53148-swear-life-graphics-4abought me at the 7-11. We mixed the fun dip into the jar and took turns eating spoonfuls.

“Community pools don’t have clowns, genius.”

“How do you know?” I said.

“Because I just do.”

“I bet there’s a high dive, like fifty feet in the air.”

“Do you know how high fifty feet is? You would die hitting the water. The impact would kill you.”

“You’re such a know-it-all, Jackson. Why can’t you let a girl dream? We’re never going to that pool because no one will ever take us, plus, it costs money, and last time I checked you weren’t making any.”

He lay back on the blanket and propped his hands behind his head and closed his eyes. “I’m not a know-it-all, I just have cable. And as soon as I turn sixteen, I’m getting a job. I’ll pay for us to go to the pool. You’ll see, it’s just a big hole with water in it.”

I never really stared at him until that day. His eyes were closed so I took the time to inspect every inch of him. I was so curious about his body. My own body was changing and I was terrified of it. Jax was getting taller. He was going to be tall like his father, but he looked more like his mother in coloring and features. Jax’s mom was French, so they had this creamy skin that looked sun-kissed year around and his brown hair and brown eyes had streams of gold running throughout it. He was letting his hair grow longer because he’d been watching some show on TV that took place in California. He said everyone in California had long hair.

I was trying to grow my own unruly, brown locks out. I don’t know why, I always had it in a braid. Maybe because I thought I would go to California with Jax one day. We both yearned for more than weeds and corn. All the books gave us those silly ideas and filled our heads with things that might never be.

I lay down beside him and stared directly into the sun. He turned on his side and propped his head on his elbow.

“You’ll go blind doing that,” he said in a low voice.

“Leave me alone.”

“Why are you in such a bad mood? You PMSing?”

“What do you know about it?”

“A lot.”

“I doubt that and even if I were, it’s beyond rude to talk to me about it.” I hadn’t started my period yet but I wasn’t going to tell him that.

Robin’s Review

Renee Carlino swept me away to a different time and place in the pages of her newest novel titled Swear on this Life. As I began reading, I found myself on a dirt road in rural Ohio. In the front yard of a ramshackle home located at the end of a dirt road. In a dilapidated shack found just beyond the tree line. From the moment I started reading, I was captivated by this story about best friends Emerson and Jackson – two poor, lonely and neglected children who only had each other to rely upon.

It didn’t take long for me to realize Swear on this Life would be special. First of all, this novel is an unusual blend of the young adult, new adult, and coming of age genres. Swear on this Life is also a second-chance romance, but what I love most about this story is that it’s about best friends who fall in love with each other! I’m very fond of friends-to-lovers romances, and from the beginning, I adored this novel!

Emiline is an aspiring author who has a daytime job as an adjunct creative writing professor at the University of California San Diego. She’s been dating Trevor since her senior year at Berkeley, although she feels her relationship with Trevor is not going anywhere. Our story really gets underway when Emiline’s roommate Cara begs her to read a bestselling novel titled All the Roads Between by debut author J. Colby.

As she begins reading Cara’s recommendation, Emiline realizes the story is familiar. From the first sentences, it’s apparent All the Roads Between is about Emiline and her childhood! She’s the female lead, Emerson, which means the novel has been written by her first love – Jason Colbertson, who is Jackson – someone she hasn’t seen or heard from in years!

Swear on this Life is essentially two stories written into one. With this writing technique, we are able to read about Emiline’s current life, while simultaneously reading about what took place during her childhood and teen years. We begin to understand Emiline’s character and how her life has been shaped. Although I have seen other authors use this writing technique, Renee Carlino was very clever with how she penned this novel. Swear on this Life has a savvy twist!

It’s been said that teenagers feel everything more acutely. Renee Carlino perfectly captured the intense emotions of two poor, neglected teenagers who are lovesick, who are desperately trying to stay together! I really connected with these characters. I fell in love with Emerson and Jackson, fell in love with their story! I felt their joy, pain and uncertainty as they supported each other through the abuse and neglect. All the Roads Between is a fascinating story all by itself!

And, of course, there is Emiline. I struggled with her character early in the story, but Emiline showed real growth over the course of the story. She faced down her demons and a past that she has ardently avoided. I couldn’t help but root for her to heal, find closure and get the guy! I wasn’t really sure what to think of Jason at first, but I think it’s because I was reading from Emiline’s point of view. She wasn’t sure what to think of Jason after he wrote down the story of her childhood and teenage years in the pages of a bestselling novel. But my love for Jason came as Emiline’s love for Jason became apparent.

In the end, Swear on this Life is not a story about four people, and it’s not just two separate novels. It’s one story about two individuals – Jason and Emiline. This is their story, and it’s one that is extremely fulfilling! Swear on this Life is a 2016 favorite of mine, and I’m giving Renee Carlino 5 stars!

Michel’s Review
From the moment I opened Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino I was captivated from the beginning to end.  I became immersed in the story and became a part of Emiline’s and Jason’s lives, past and present.  I experienced their emotional journey on a very personal level.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino was written with a very unique plot delivery.  It all begins with Emiline.  She’s a struggling aspiring author teaching creative writing as an adjunct professor.  Her life is anything but perfect.  She’s involved in a long term relationship with Trevor, a former college football star, that seems to have stalled just like her writing.  She’s beginning to question her relationship, her career aspirations, and her life direction.  In her mind she knows she has made the right decisions that have her on the road to a normal, stable life.  A life that is far better than her past.  A past that she chose to put behind her, a past she chose to forget.  The past is part of what shapes and molds an individual.  Good or bad it is a part that should never be forgotten.
***
When her best friend recommends a highly acclaimed novel, All The Roads Between by J. Colby, it’s the beginning of Emiline’s journey in the story of her life.
***
From the very first sentence in All The Roads Between, Emiline is drawn into the story.  Two impoverished kids on a dirt road depending on one another to survive their destructive and destitute lives.  Jackson and Emily are clinging to one another in a world beyond their control.  Their journey from childhood to adolescence is far from the carefree and innocent life most people experience.  There are no rose colored glasses to make their lives look better.  The only thing they have that’s good in their lives is each other.  A love that is completely pure, untarnished by the circumstances of their lives.  Good things are only fleeting in their lives and the ugly world once again rears it’s ugly head.  This time it destroys the only pure thing in their lives, it destroys their love for one another.
***
As Emiline reads this book, she begins to see a parallel of her own life.  All The Roads Between is the story of her childhood.  She is Emily and Jackson is Jason.  Upon further research she finds the author J. Colby is none other than Jason Culbertson, her first love and best friend.  He has betrayed her once again and exposed her dirty secrets.  Secrets that should of stayed buried in the past.  She’s beyond angry, she’s devastated.
***
While reading the book, she discovers that J. Colby will be doing a book signing at a local book store near her.  This is her opportunity to confront Jason after all these years.  She will finally be able to exercise the demons that have haunted her.  She will finally be able to let go of Jason’s betrayal.
***
The confrontation is anything but a long awaited reunion.  It is only the beginning for both Emiline and Jason.  Emiline needs to finish the book before she can move forward.  Jason released his demons long ago, the book is his redemption.  Emily and Jackson’s story is only a part of Emiline and Jason’s story.  It is up to them on how the ending plays out.  It’s time for them to write the rest of their story.  They are long overdue for their happily ever after.
***
Renee Carlino is a brilliant writer.  Two novels merge into an epic love story that take the readers on an emotional journey.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino should be on the big screen.  It is an epic romance that will touch every soul.  It is a true love story.

It Ends With Us

By Colleen Hoover

Synopsis

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

With this bold and deeply personal novel, Colleen Hoover delivers a heart-wrenching story that breaks exciting new ground for her as a writer. Combining a captivating romance with a cast of all-too-human characters, It Ends With Us is an unforgettable tale of love that comes at the ultimate price.

Spoiler Free Review

The newest novel from author Colleen Hoover is romantic and sweet. Heartbreaking and suspenseful. Hopeful and healing. Exhilarating and profound. Eye-opening. “Deeply personal” for the woman who wrote it. I heard whispers that this story would be different from anything Colleen Hoover had previously written. It’s true. It Ends With Us is far from her norm, and I strongly believe it may be her best work yet.

It Ends With Us is a story where past and present collide. It’s a refreshingly honest novel that stars a cast of three characters: Lily Bloom, Ryle Kincaid and Atlas Corrigan. Instead of giving a broad summary of what this story entails, I strongly encourage that you experience it without expectations of what you’ll be reading. Stay away from Facebook and other social media. Go in blind. Put your trust in Colleen Hoover and read It Ends With Us the way it is meant to be read. Like so many readers before me, I did, and I’m extremely grateful for my reading experience!

Colleen Hoover is a gifted author. She writes romance novels, but her stories are about so much more than love. Her novels are about characters who face difficult circumstances. It Ends With Us is a novel that has everything a seasoned reader loves to find in a quality new adult novel. Strong character growth. A powerful, emotionally charged plot. Romantic chemistry that will put you on the edge of your seat. Outstanding character dialogue and flawless writing. At times while I was reading, my heart felt bruised, but in the end, I found this story completely fulfilling.

For all these reasons, I’m giving Colleen Hoover a 6-star rating. This 2016 favorite is inspiring, and I honestly expect it will be life-changing for many readers. You won’t want to miss this novel. Please be sure to read It Ends With Us!

Spoiler Free Review

After reading It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover I was at wits end on how to review this book.  There are just not the right kind of words to describe this reading experience without giving away spoilers.  It’s a novel that each reader needs to experience themselves.  The only word I could use to accurately describe this novel is PROFOUND.

It Ends With Us is not the typical romance.  I wouldn’t even put this novel in the romance genre.  It is more like a contemporary fiction novel or womens fiction novel.

I would suggest that readers stay away from social media and sites where spoilers and in depth reviews are posted .  This type of influence could give the readers the wrong perceptions going in. I highly recommend going into this novel “blind”, free of any influence from the outside world.

Colleen Hoover is a gifted writer that delivers a unique reading experience with every one of her novels.  It Ends With Us has layers upon layers within the overall plot of the story.  Each and everyone of her characters are multi dimensional.  There are so many shades of gray within this novel.  Colleen colors these shades of gray and gives the reader a completely different perspective.  As this novel progresses, the colors change in value and tone, very much like a kaleidoscope .  In the end the reader walks away with new perceptions, a deeper understanding of these life circumstances, and hopefully a more tolerable opinion.

Each character in this novel was shaped by their pasts.  There were cracks in their entire being.  They were both good and bad, loving and hateful, and lastly broken but not beyond salvation.  They were who they were and had to choose how to proceed in their future lives.  They all had to choose the path they wanted to take in their future that would illuminate rather than darken their lives.

This novel touched me on so many different emotional and physical levels.  I walked away with a different perspective.  In no way do I condone some of the issues but I will not be quick to judge people in these life situations.

The writing was beyond superb.  It delivered a very profound message.  It was a real portrayal of life, love, relationships, and family.  It was enlightening.  The overall message was positive.

About Colleen Hoover

Author Bio:

image005Colleen Hoover’s love for writing began in 1985 when she was five years old. Her first story was titled “Mystery Bob” and was a huge hit with her mother, who was really good at faking interest.
Colleen continued to write short stories for friends and family until December of 2011, when she decided to write a long story she titled, “Slammed.” She self-published SLAMMED to Amazon in January, 2012 and it hit the NYT’s bestsellers list in May, 2012. She has since signed with Atria Books, a division of Simon & Schuster, and now has six NYT’s bestsellers. Colleen prefers to be called a writer, as the term “author” still terrifies her and makes this feel like a job with expectations. She doesn’t work well under pressure and hopes writing will always remain fun and exciting.
Colleen’s newest novel, UGLY LOVE, releases August 5th, 2014. She is currently working on a new novel, CONFESS, which she is writing as fast as she can before she wakes up from this crazy dream.

You can follow Colleen on Instagram and Twitter @colleenhoover. You can also find her on her blog at http://www.colleenhoover.com where she holds a daily book-a-day giveaway, or on her very active Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/authorcolleenhoover where she loves to give away more free stuff when her husband isn’t looking.

Colleen also wants the world to know that writing short biographies in third person is incredibly awkward.

Michel’s Review

The Royals series is addicting, consuming, and riveting.  It is by far the best series of 2016.

I could not wait for Broken Prince by Erin Watt to release.  Paper Princess left off with a huge cliffhanger in epical proportions.  The series could of went in so many different directions.  It was impossible to predict.  Like Paper Princess, Broken Prince was another page turner with twists, turns, and epic moments that once again changed the direction of the series.  Not only were there twists and turns, there was a shocking revelation at the end that left my jaw on the floor.

The Royals are not your normal family.  They are the very definition of privileged, spoiled children making everyone’s life miserable if they don’t get their way.  The brothers are resentful of their father, they blame him for their mother’s death.  Each boy has his own issues and problems that add to the monumental mess in the family.  Adding to the mess is the father, who doesn’t really know how to be a parent, and keeps making big mistakes.  One of those mistakes is bringing his younger mistress into the home.  She has her own agenda in the Royal family.

In the middle of all the tension is Ella.  She’s in love with Reed Royal but hates everything he stands for.  She thought he was different.  He forced her to run away and now she has been brought back to the house of terrors.  Ella is surviving in this house by sheer will and determination.

Ella has come home.  Life with the Royals and life at school have taken a new direction.  This time she is standing up for herself and taking names along the way.

Once again Ella finds the Royals are not all that they appear to be on the surface.  She’s beginning to see each one in a different light.  Reed is proving he’s not the guy she ran from.  Callum is stepping up as a guardian and parent.  There may be hope for the Royals after all.  That is until….CLIFFHANGER!

I can’t wait for Twisted Palace to release in October 2016.

The dynamic writing team of Elle Kennedy and Jen Frederick is phenomenal.  Their talents complement each other and inspire each other.  Together their combined creativity has created perfection.  The writing is flawless.

Michel’s Review

Warped by Emma James is BRILLIANT!

INTENSE…DARK…UNPREDICTABLE…CONSUMING… IT IS UNDENIABLY WARPED !

OMG… I don’t know what to say… this book blew me away!  The moment I opened Warped, I was expecting a recap of Wrenched before the second part of this story progressed.  Rather than getting a recap, the reader is drawn into the the mind of Cezar Pavel. Cezar is the master of the brutal game that controls Whispers fate.

13567010_504981926378592_7733112119392748473_n

The introduction of Cezar Pavel is gut wrenching.  The man is truly warped in every sense. He has no conscience.  He has no fear.  He has complete power and wields it with cruelty and brutality.  He is not a player in the game, he is the ruler of the game.  He leaves no room for chance.  He is the king.  He is the master of the game.

The players of this game have no idea who Cezar Pavel is.  They have no idea of his connection to Whisper or his obsession with her.  They have no idea of how far his reach is or to what lengths he will go to exert his will.  They are operating blindly in a deadly game where time is at the utmost importance.

After Edge learns the truth about Whisper’s involvement in his father’s life he has more than regrets.  She was an innocent woman, a victim.  He shot her in cold blood and enabled her captors to easily take her.  He should of known his father was reaching beyond the grave to destroy both his and Whisper’s lives.  Although he’s not surprised by his father’s cruelty beyond the grave, he doesn’t understand the reasons behind the sick game he is playing.  There has to be more behind the obvious picture in front of him.  His father may have meant for him to kill Whisper, but why?  What was he hiding?

Edge was shot in the foot when Whisper was taken.  His injuries are putting a kink into finding Whisper.  The only thing he has to go on is the fact that Whisper has his phone.  The only help he has is an old woman, Miss Catherine, and her instincts.  The men that swore to protect Whisper at all costs have gone missing.

With every clue and lead, they are met with death and destruction.  The messes left behind leave no clues as to who is behind it all. He has no idea of what he is dealing with. Time is running out and Whisper has been missing for over a week.  It’s time to call in reinforcements, the Soulless Bastards.

Whisper lived in captivity all her life.  She had a taste of freedom.  She had a new life with family and friends.  She will not become a slave again.  She will do everything in her power to survive or she will die before she allows herself to be owned once again.  She has to keep her wits and will to survive.  It’s the only thing she can depend on.   Hope is running out.

Can Edge find Whisper before it’s too late?  Cliffhanger!

I could not put this book down.  The plot is extremely complex and the web became more tangled.  New characters were introduced and it was impossible to determine where this story would go next.  I was on the edge of my seat and biting my nails.  The intensity level was through the roof.  It added more kinks to the overall story and made it become more intensified.  I can’t wait to see what comes next.  Contorted will release in November of 2016.

Warped was the perfect title and brilliant addition to the Hell’s Bastard series by Emma James.

Michel’s Review

Wow!  Emma James has joined my favorite authors list and is definitely my favorite new author of 2015.  I was blown away by her Men of Ocean Beach books.  I was excited to see that she had a new series releasing that had a biker theme.  In my mind I was expecting an emotional type of story rather than a dark thriller.  Emma James does dark just as well as she does emotional.

Wrenched took me by complete surprise.  I was expecting a story that revolved around the  Hell’s Bastard MC.  What the reader got was much more complex.

Whisper is a young woman that has been held in depraved captivity since her infant years.  She has never experienced a normal, loving life.  She has been a victim all her life.  Rather than letting her life circumstances beat her down, she allowed it to strengthen her for the day when she was either freed or dead.  In all reality it looked like death was going to be the ultimate ending for her.  Freedom comes at an unexpected moment but not without a price.  Now she is a young woman that is lost in the world.  She has no past and could very well have no future.  But she’s free.  She has found new people who care for her and are watching her back.

Edge is the most brutal enforcer in the Hell’s Bastard MC.  He’s the judge, jury, and executioner.  He is one of the most feared men in his dark world.  Edge didn’t become this brutal and lethal man by choice.  He had a horrific childhood in which he escaped.  He vowed he would one day return and dispense his brand of justice on his father.  Fate took that away from him.  His father died and it was not by his hand.  His father screwed him over one more time in his death  when he left the whore, Whisper, his entire estate except for the $100 he left his natural born son.  Edge is hunting down Whisper.  She took his inheritance.  It’s not about the money.  It’s about the theft of his justice.  His justice is going to knock on Whisper’s door.

As the old saying goes “read between the lines” and “all is not black and white” definitely applies in this story.  All is not how it seems.  There is a more tangled plot than a depraved man destroying two young lives.  This depraved man was playing a game of chess and in the end, his king will not be taken.  He had the foresight to destroy them both in his death.

Wrenched ended on a major cliffhanger that left me chilled to the bone.

Emma James created a complex plot that could be described as a tangled web.  Wrenched was just the beginning and introduction to a very twisted complex story.  The writing is brilliant.  I believe that once the Hell’s Bastard Series is complete, it will easily be a 6 Star series.

Wrenched is a superb dark thriller!

Excerpt

We strolled up Charing Cross Road talking about the usual first date stuff: music we liked, where I was from. He’d even been to Slovenia, telling me about a bachelor party he’d gone on in Ljubljana, although he called it a ‘stag night’.

“I loved the city, but it was a bloody awful weekend. All Harry’s friends were straight. They knew I wasn’t, but it was obviously uncomfortable for them. God, the strippers were the worst! Ugly old trouts with waxed pussies like badly made Barbie dolls—hideous!”

I smiled at the image.

“Wouldn’t bother me.”

“Well, it didn’t bother me, but it’s not exactly my cup of tea either.”

“You … drank tea?” I asked, puzzled.

Seth laughed. “Sorry! That’s very British. But your English is so good … it means, not my scene.”

“Oh, okay. I like strippers if they’re good—women or men. I have sex with both.”

“You’ve had sex with strippers?”

“Yeah, but…”

“Really?”

“Sure,” and I turned to watch his face. “Both: men and women.”

His eyebrows shot up and his mouth popped open.

“You … I … really?”

“Is that a deal breaker? You said you didn’t want to play games.”

“You’re really bi?”

“Yeah, I’m really bi.”

“You have sex with women?” he asked, his mouth twisting with dislike.

“Yeah.”

“Often?”

“Jesus! Yes, often. And with men, often.”

“When was the last time you … with a woman?”

“The night before I met you.”

“Wow.” Seth shook his head slowly. “I don’t know what to say.”

My shoulders tensed.

Seth was staring at me, a confused expression of dislike on his face.

Michel’s Review

Jane Harvey-Berrick has taken her writing to a whole new level. Luka, the latest release in the Rhythm Series, is beyond exceptional.  This is a story that can stand on it’s own merit and can be read without reading the first book in the series ( although I would highly recommend reading Slave To Rhythm).

The dance troupe has finished it’s last show and is on break for the next few months.  Rather than returning to the States with the other members of the troupe, Luka chooses to stay behind in London.  He has been in London several times but never had a chance to experience the city because of his work.  One of his troupe mates has offered to let him use her apartment while she is away in Austrailia. Luka seizes the opportunity with high hopes of a delightful holiday.  He never imagined that his life would be ripped apart and forever changed.

Luka is a complex man.  For starters, he’s bisexual.  Although his preferences tend to lead towards men, he also is very attracted to women.  Being bi-sexual, you would think that Luka has very loose morals, which isn’t the case at all.  He’s a man that enjoys one night tryst but he is also a man that values relationships.  He has a certain set of standards that he lives by.  He never sleeps with co workers or other dancers.  He doesn’t want the complications that may occur afterwards.

The last night of their show, Slave, he makes a life changing mistake.  He has a drunken night with one of the other dancers in the troupe.  He loves Sarah dearly as a friend but doesn’t want anything more.  Sarah wants more but is willing to accept Luka’s friendship. She leaves the following day for Australia to reconnect with an old boyfriend.

Luka is enjoying his holiday in London.  He has met a man that he is falling in love with.  Seth is the first person to capture his entire heart.  Luka’s ready to make a commitment to Seth.  Their relationship seems to be moving along brilliantly until Luka is introduced to Seth’s friends.  Seth doesn’t want his gay friends to know Luka is bisexual.  Luka doesn’t like deceiving Seth’s friends.  As their relationship begins to develop some bumps, the biggest hurdle is yet to come.  Sarah is back in London.  Sarah is determined to win Luka’s heart.  She has something that can hold Luka by her side.  The worst part is that she is Seth’s twin sister.  Luka is going to be torn to shreds.

Sarah and Seth will destroy everything good in Luka’s life.  They will destroy the man he is and make him question everything in his life. They will shred every piece of his heart and destroy everything he holds dear.  The power they wield over his life is abusive, horrendous, and spiteful.  After they have completely destroyed him, his friends from the dance troupe in the U.S. will show him the true meaning of love with friendship, support, and family ties.  They will help him find his way back to the caring man he once was.

I have to say I usually hate books that have love triangles.  This book was quite different.  There were no winners where the heart was concerned.  Two people destroyed the one person they loved the most.  That one person, Luka, proved what defines a good, righteous person.  He was a man of honor.  My heart broke for this man.  I just  wanted to hug him tightly and let him know it was going to be okay.

Jane Harvey-Berrick poured her heart and soul into this book.  I cannot express the emotional journey this book took me on.  The writing was flawless.

I highly recommend The Rhythm Series.  This series is unique and has taken on a life of itself.  Each book is emotional, endearing, and riveting.

Sara

Though I’d hoped to learn more about his meeting, with the events of the day and the warmth of his silent embrace, in no time at all, I began to drift off to sleep. I was nearly there when Jacob moved. Rolling me to my back, he hovered close and smoothed my long hair away from my face.

“Are you still awake?” he asked, his minty breath blowing over me.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry…”

His simple apology had my full attention. I wasn’t sure I remembered hearing those words from him.

“…I meant to tell you how well you did at service.”

I smiled. “Thank you. I was scared, but Raquel and Elizabeth were with me the entire time. And Brother Benjamin,” I added, suddenly fearful of not acknowledging that a man had helped. He continued to run his fingers through my hair. “I didn’t want you to think that I’d been quiet because of anything you’d done. You were perfect.”

It was difficult for me not to ask the questions running through my tired mind, but Lying on my back helped me remember. “Thank you, Jacob. I want you to be proud. I’m sorry that I embarrassed you. I’m sure that’s what Father Gabriel was speaking to you about.”

His hand and breath stilled, as if he was considering his words carefully. “We’re leaving the clinic tomorrow. However, instead of going to our apartment, we’ll be staying at the pole barn for a while.”

“I don’t remember our apartment or the pole barn, but I’ll go wherever you take me.”

His lips brushed mine. The light touch ignited a park that detonated flickers of yearning throughout my body. I lifted my lips to his, wanting more than the chaste endearment.

“Sara, I…” Jacob didn’t complete his sentence; instead his hand slipped behind my heard, pulling me toward him. His kiss, no longer apathetic, devoured. Zeal radiated from his lips, and soon his breaths were labored. Like magnets we were drawn toward one another, closer and closer. My body liquefied, becoming pliable to his touch, while conversely, his hardened, ready to claim what was already his.

As the heat of our passion washed over us, I forgot my punishment. My attention went elsewhere. A tug on my hair propelled my head to tilt, while the persistence of his minty tongue encouraged my lips to part. Whimpers and moans reverberated in my mouth and bubbled forth. They were wordless sounds declaring my body’s approval.

The large, strong hands that had delivered pain now brought pleasure. I reached for his broad shoulders, opening my arms and willfully surrendering to his kisses. With a palpable hunger, his mouth moved from my lips to my neck and down to my collarbone. His actions sent shivers to my toes and tremors to my insides. Each kiss moved lower until he reached the neckline of my nightgown. The bra I’d worn to service was gone. My breaths quickened as each button cam undone, leaving me bare and exposed to his desires.

The sound of my heart echoed in my ears as he praised my beauty and whispered admiration for what was his. When he wasn’t speaking, his lips moved lower as his five o’clock shadow tantalized my sensitive skin. It was as his skilled fingers joined the assault, kneading my breasts and twisting my hardened nipples, that primal sounds came from in my throat. It wasn’t that I feared speaking. It was that words weren’t forming. Wanting what he could give, I reached for his head, wove my fingers through his hair, and pulled him closer.

Suddenly he stopped and pulled away, leaving me open to the cool air.

Dazed and chilled, I reached for my nightgown. Embarrassed and hurt, I began to button it.

“Did I do something wrong?”

Robin’s Review

I thoroughly enjoy reading dark psychological thrillers, but there’s something about cults that really makes me uncomfortable. I put my complete faith in author Aleatha Romig when I began reading her first traditionally published novel – Into the Light – and I quickly became 100% invested in her story about a cult. Into the Light is the first part of a duology, with Away from the Dark coming out in just a few short months. And thank goodness for that – because days later, I still can’t get this story out of my head!

The plot of Into the Light is twofold, as Aleatha Romig alternates her story between Sara, Jacob and Stella’s first person points of view. Sara Adams awakens in a hospital bed with no eyesight and no memory whatsoever of what came before. She’s injured and completely dependent upon Jacob Adams, a husband she cannot remember. A husband who has complete responsibility for her actions and care.

Stella Montgomery is an investigative journalist who works for WCJB in Detroit. Her best friend and coworker Mindy has disappeared. In fact, there’s been a rash of women who have disappeared from the Detroit area. Stella is on a mission to find out who or what is behind their disappearances – and to find and bring her friend home.

Aleatha Romig has once again crafted another meticulously detailed story. Into the Light is a dark psychological thriller/mystery that I think will appeal to the curiosity of most readers. Clues can be found throughout this novel, and if you are not paying close attention when you read it, you may miss important indicators as to what is taking place. I’ve read Romig’s Infidelity and Consequences series, and I’m quite familiar with her modus operandi. I picked up on a few of Romig’s clues, but she STILL managed to pull the rug out from under me with a major plot twist at the end of this novel!

It’s obvious to me Romig put a lot of thought and planning into this story. Her writing flows extremely well from one sentence to the next, and the attention to detail is impeccable. While I was reading, there were moments when I marveled at how creative and entertaining Into the Light is – especially as Romig begins to fill in the blanks of her mystery. This story continues to build in intensity right up until the very last page, when I found myself scratching my head because of a killer cliffhanger!

Into the Light appealed to a wide array of my emotions. I remember feeling angry, anxious, suspicious, curious, and confused while I was reading. There are friendships and romance and sexy time in the midst of this dark tale, all of which caused me to have mixed feelings about many of the characters in Romig’s cult. I think I can safely say that Away from the Dark is easily one of my most anticipated novels during the second half of 2016. I’m giving Aleatha Romig a 6-star rating for Into the Light and adding it to my 2016 list favorites!

Michel’s Review

Quite honestly… I don’t know how to review this book.  The first thing that comes to mind is… Aleatha Romig is a brilliant writer!  I am awed by her mastery of her craft.  She creates a mind blowing story that takes multiple twists and turns that keep the reader guessing.  Every theory is thrown out the door as the pages turn.  Each revelation adds another layer of intrigue and mystery.  By the time the reader gets to the final chapter they’ve gone through a mind boggling journey that ends with complete surprise and shock.  A jaw dropper.  A huge cliffhanger.  The reader is left with the impossibility of predicting what is going to come next.  BRILLIANT!

Into The Light is the first book in The Light Series.  It is considered to be a dark thriller.  It’s a combination of dark thriller and romance.  The beauty of this story is we don’t know who is the leading man or who the heroine is.  It will all make sense once the complete story is revealed.  In the mean time there are a ton of women going missing in the Highland Heights and Detroit area.  One of those missing women is an investigative television reporter.  Her best friend, another investigative reporter, the crew at the news station, a suspicious coroner, and a Detroit detective are all beginning to question the disappearances.  It’s a complete enigma.  There are no common factors, traits, or evidence that link these women in any way.  As the separate investigations begin to unfold there is one thing that is beginning to surface.  A secretive religious cult known as The Light.

Aleatha takes the reader into The Light.  The reader becomes very aware of the doctrines that govern The Light.  They get an in depth look of what it’s like to be a member of this congregation through the eyes of a married couple belonging to the fold.  It is downright creepy and hair raising.  There is more to The Light than living in the righteous way.

As this story begins to unfold, it takes many twists and turns.  The layers of deception, violence, and deadly implications continue to grow in abundance.  With each revelation it becomes more of a monster with far reaching claws.  The monster has many disguises and an invisible presence.  It has an insatiable hunger.  These missing women never had a chance.

Be prepared for shocking ending.  Just remember this is not the end… only a pause … until the next book, Away From The Dark,  releases in October 2016.

Aleatha Romig has earned the title of Bestselling author.  She has gifted her readers with her unquestionable brilliance.

Excerpt

Prologue

It was once said that if you love someone enough you should let them go. If they come back to you, they were always meant to be yours.

It’s kind of bullshit.

My story was a little different than most. I was a little different than most.

Because in my story, if you love someone enough, you should first drop the gun.

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of T. M. Frazier’s books.  Her gritty, dark romance thrillers are page turners.  Her characters come to life and become very real people.  They are all interconnected in some way and are a part of each story.  In a very odd way, these nonconventional lawless people come together to form an unusual family.  These loners finally find acceptance, friendship, and love without changing the very essence of their true selves.

I was excited when she announced the upcoming release of All The Rage.  I stalked my kindle on release day waiting for this book to download.  I began reading it in the middle of the night and could not put it down.  Hours later with several cups of coffee in my system and extreme bags under my eyes I finished the book.  Holy Crap!  This book is T.M. Frazier’s best writing to date.  She dug deep and tapped into the psyche of a sociopath / controlled serial killer.  The angel of death that looks like a prom queen or a barbie, in this case Rambo Barbie.

Rage was first introduced in Lawless and Soulless.  She has professional connections with the Beach Bastards MC and Warriors MC.  She’s a killer for hire.  She has no ties to anyone or anything.  She’s an enigma in her violent world as well as her personal world.

She ran away from her personal life, her family and only friend, because she understood her true nature would always be brewing beneath the surface.  When she met a biker that understood her true nature, she jumped at the chance to become the person she hid below the surface.  Years later she has become the person she was meant to be without the worries of personal attachments or lack of conscience.  She has no home, no friends, and no commitments.  She lives with a packed duffle bag and her reliable Vespa.  She is a ghost with the looks of a barbie.  No one ever suspects a prom queen to be the angel of death.  She’s living the life she desperately craved.  She moves from job to job and leaves with no remorse.  She is Rage.

When she is assigned another babysitting job that could turn into a potential murder it changes her life.  Her assignment is a normal college boy spending his summer on the west coast of Florida while healing from a leg injury.  Her job is to infiltrate and get information on his parents.  It’s an annoying job but it has potential.  What she doesn’t realize is this is her day of reckoning.  This is a life changing moment in her pathetic life. It’s a door opener into the world of normal.  She’s going to find that she is not as apathetic as she thought she was.  A seemingly innocent college boy is going to see the real Rage.  He’s going to give her back Hope.

Nolan went to Florida to lick his wounds.  After a leg injury that ended his college hockey career, he’s downright depressed.  He’s at crossroads in his life.  He can either try to rehabilitate his leg for hockey or choose something else in life.  When a girl in a white bikini saves his life and moves in with him, it’s a game changer.  He has a new goal.  He is going to win Rage’s heart and make her his.  He sees her beneath the angelic surface and likes the monster that hides beneath.  Like Rage, he has his own secrets.  There’s a devil beneath the surface waiting to be released.

Rage and Nolan are very complex people.  There’s more to their story than their individual lives.  Their pasts could ruin their future.  Their darkness could swallow them both whole.

Their world is going to collide.  It’s up to them on how they handle the damage control.

T. M. Frazier tapped into Rage’s soul.  It was interesting to see the innocence that coexist with the darkness.  She didn’t try to fix this broken girl.  She validated her life and gave her a chance of accepting and receiving love.  She gave her the courage to return that love.  It was a powerful story.  I could not put this book down!

Robin’s Review

Author Taylor Jenkins Reid writes about themes that can sometimes be difficult to digest. She examines “what if” scenarios – events which can cause a reader to contemplate how he or she might respond. At least, this is what I have noticed happens to me when I read her books. Her newest novel titled One True Loves presents a nearly impossible situation. How can you possibly choose between your two “true loves” – your husband you had long thought deceased or your fiancé whom you are excited to be starting a new life with?

Emma Blair fell in love with Jesse Lerner at the age of seventeen. Jesse was handsome and athletic, romantic and extremely thoughtful. He encouraged Emma to chase her dreams. Together, the two of them were impulsive and madly in love. Nine years after they began dating, they were married on a beach in Malibu, California. But on her first wedding anniversary, Emma loses her one true love to a helicopter accident over the Pacific Ocean. Lost in her own grief at the age of 26, Emma quits her job and moves back home to Massachusetts.

Emma’s sadness gradually evaporates into a fresh start in life, a new career, and new interests. After a few years, Emma runs into an old friend from high school. Sam Kemper is handsome, funny, and he has a world of patience with Emma. She slowly allows herself to fall in love again. At the age of 31, Emma agrees to a second chance at happiness – to marry Sam, her second true love. Two weeks after they become engaged, Emma receives a phone call from Jesse. He’s been rescued at sea, and he’s desperately been trying to come home to her for years.

One True Loves is real, it’s raw, and it’s incredibly thought-provoking. This contemporary romance/women’s fiction novel presents an impossible situation, one where our primary character is forced to choose between two men whom she desperately loves. When you read the synopsis, One True Loves sounds angsty. I’m not going to gloss over it. One True Loves IS angsty, but Taylor Jenkins Reid manages to handle this topic with logic and grace.

It’s hard for me to imagine this type of situation happening to anyone in real life, but Reid paints a realistic picture of sadness, confusion and love though all stages of this story. It was so easy for me to see how Emma could fall in love with each of these men. Reid presents this story chronologically, so the reader is able to see the natural progression of each relationship. I absolutely LOVED Emma’s relationship with Jesse. Jesse gives Emma courage to follow her dreams. He is everything Emma needs during her teens and twenties. And Sam. Sam encourages Emma to create a new life for herself. He is selfless, kind and patient with Emma as she overcomes the loss of her husband.

One of the best things about Reid’s writing is the character dialogue – the openness and honesty that takes place between her characters. I think you’ll find that the conversations in this story are interesting and entertaining, even if the subject matter might not be pleasant. One True Loves is a genuine page-turner. I couldn’t, didn’t want to, put my Kindle down!

Although there are plenty of sweet, romantic moments, One True Loves is also painful and angry and sad. It’s confusing and overwhelming for Jesse, Sam and Emma. I guess some readers will consider this story a love triangle, but that’s not because any of the characters deliberately chose to cheat on each other. It’s NOT REALLY cheating. It’s just life. I encourage readers who avoid these types of novels, to give this book a try.

One True Loves is one of my 2016 favorites. I read a lot of novels, but days after finishing, this story still impresses me! I absolutely loved the way this story was reconciled! The impeccable dialogue and character development are truly what make this story special, and that’s why I’m giving Taylor Jenkins Reid a 5-star rating for One True Loves!

Michel’s Review
Throughout the ages people have been fascinated with the Legend of Camelot.  It is one of the most loved legends and epic romances of all time.  Katy Regnery has put a new spin on the beloved legend and makes the readers fall in love once again with the idea of Knights and chivalry .  Her epic fairytale spin off redefines the definition of a knight in shining armor and gives our modern day world a new kind of hero.
***
Dark Sexy Knight revolves around a dinner theater portraying the medieval times.  Our hero, Colt Lane, is the dark Viking Knight that battles the White Knight on a nightly basis.  His victories are few and far between, just like his life.  Life muddles along that way until he meets his own Princess, Verity Gwynn.  He now has something to fight for, something to protect, something to cherish.  Winning her heart was easy, protecting her from the evil kingdom and his darkness will take every bit of honor and self control he has within him.  Princess Gwynn is a package deal, she has to take care of her special needs brother, Ryan.  The evil knight, Artie, is determined to cut Ryan down and steal her affection.  Verity knows a real knight in shining armor when she sees one and it is not the one that shines on the surface.
***
Verity and Ryan were down on their luck when they met Colt Lane at a job fair.  Colt not only helped them get jobs but also rescued them from the violent neighborhood they were staying in.  He gave them a chance to get on their feet,  He respected them as individuals and offered friendship.  He helped Verity give Ryan the security and protection he needed in his life.  He wants to share his life but Colt has his own secrets, his own battles, and another princess he has to protect.  Can he let Verity into his world and will he be able to give her the happiness she deserves?
***
Once again Katy Regnery created an emotional story that stands out in any era.  She portrayed a very realistic world that revolves around those with special needs.  She also added a multitude of layers to Colt’s and Verity’s lives that added that extra something to their relationship.  She blended her characters lives, struggles, and triumphs into an enchanting story.  I could not put this book down and felt enriched after reading it.
 ***
On a personal note, I want to commend Katy for creating this story.  The special needs community is very dear to my heart.  For many years I worked with special needs students.  All of those very special people own a very big space in my heart.  They have given me more friendship and love than most people experience in a lifetime.  They were a true blessing in my life.  Katy captured their beauty, innocence, and unconditional capacity to  love.  She captured their spirit.  Thank you Katy… Dark Sexy Knight was truly a beautiful book!
