Excerpt

~Ice~

“Suck harder. Right there… Fuck yeah, that’s it.”

The half-naked platinum blonde kneeling in front of me sucks dick like a damn champ.

“Shit! Dammit, Dad!” my teenage daughter Brooke suddenly shrieks from across the living room while covering her eyes with her hands. Her voice immediately kills my hard on.

Pushing the bimbo off me, I stand to pull up my pants, wincing as I tuck my still sensitive cock away. I move forward to find my daughter, who is not supposed to be home today, and the blonde paws at me as I go to make my way past her. I would have preferred it if she’d run her mouth and taken off; instead, she’s pouting at me because we didn’t finish. I wish Brooke would have just given me five more minutes to get off, then I could have gotten rid of the broad on her knees. Tossing this barfly would be a hell of a lot easier then.

“Get out. I’m done with ya,” I dismiss her, tired of the sulking look on her face. Damn, woman, take a hint already.

With a huff, she rights her clothes, collects her things, and scurries out.

Making my way down the hall of my not so modest home, I bark a sardonic laugh when I turn the knob to my daughter’s room and find it locked.

“Open this door, young lady,” I order in what comes out as a bellow. We have danced this dance on more than one occasion.

“Sorry, I’m busy searching for the eye bleach. I can’t unlock the door right now, check back later,” my sassy mini-me replies.

Chelsea Camaron

Chelsea Camaron was born and raised in Coastal North Carolina. She currently resides in Southern Louisiana with her husband and two children but her heart is always Carolina day dreaming.

Chelsea always wanted to be a writer, but like most of us, let fear of the unknown grab a hold of her dream; she realized that if she was going to tell her daughter to go for her dreams, that it was time to follow her own advice.

Chelsea grew up turning wrenches alongside her father, and from that grew her love for old muscle cars and Harley Davidson motorcycles, which just so happened to inspired her ‘Daddy’s Girls’ series. Her love for reading has sparked a new love for writing and she currently has a few more projects in the works.

When she is not spending her days writing you can find her playing with her kids, attending car shows, going on motorcycle rides on the back of her husband’s Harley, snuggling down with her new favorite book or watching any movie that Vin Diesel might happen to be in.

She hates being serious and is still a big kid at heart. She is a small town country girl enjoying life and, Chelsea hopes that her readers remember not to take life too seriously and to embrace your inner five year old, because five year olds know how to enjoy the simple things in life and how to always have fun.

Excerpt

Payback time. Standing in his mother’s kitchen, Sean Collins smiled as he hung up the phone.

He hovered at the phone for a moment, then charged along the carpeted hallway to his bedroom. In a flash, he changed from his T-shirt and jeans into his black pin stripe king-of-the-business-world suit complete with black tie and shiny black shoes.

Finished dressing, Sean jittered at the door and listened to his son talking nonstop to his mother upstairs. His skin tingled and he closed his eyes. At least moving to his parents’ country estate where he had grown up on Cape Cod had been good for everyone.

Breakfast could wait. He grabbed the keys on the counter downstairs, and he called upstairs, “I’m leaving. I won’t be gone long.”

Last year, the school principal had fired him with bogus charges. Sean had sworn on every holy book that he’d been fired because his doctors had discovered cancer in a routine physical exam.

The sickness sucked. But he’d survived. And now he used his vast wealth to get what he wanted. No teacher should be treated so callously. He had taken the job at the time to prove to himself he had more choices than being the chief financial officer of his father’s corporation.

He set his jaw and walked outside to his car, where the smell of freshly cut grass hit his senses.

The moment he stepped outside and headed toward the garage, Sean stared at the vast forested area on the property for a moment and pressed his lips together. Trees made sense. Women never had. His luck with women had been bad from the start. His first girlfriend, Gigi Dumont, had left him for parts unknown, and then later his wife, now his ex, Jennifer, had also left. She’d played with a whole set of loose scruples. But Jennifer hadn’t hurt him, not like Gigi had. Sean rolled his shoulders. Why did everything in his life always seem to go back to Gigi leaving?

He fished out his keys from his pocket. And now Gigi had moved back into the house next door.

Sean opened the garage door. A quick click of a button and the gate lifted.

Last night he hadn’t slept. Today his shoulders were straight. This moment had nothing to do with women and everything to do with justice. His fingers traced the shiny finish of his brother Gerard’s Aston Martin. Without blinking, he opted to borrow the car. He’d be early and outshine everyone else. Gerard had offered to loan it to him specifically for today. Sean licked his lips and turned the key, igniting the engine, and took off.

A daydream flashed in his eyes. Principal Murray’s jaw dropped to the ground in shock the second Sean stepped inside the office with the papers.

Sean clutched the wheel. He intended to twist the knife even further. People like Mr. Murray gave businessmen around the world the reputation of cold, heartless automatons, especially when he claimed the firing had been over “job performance.” Every one of Sean’s students had passed the state assessments.

Now, Sean ran the finances for his parents, his father’s company, and his brothers. The support of his family to get him through cancer treatments had been phenomenal, but what if he hadn’t had that support? What if he’d had no money to pay for treatments? He’d be dead because the principal had fired him due to the insurance increases. Well, now Sean had a better solution.

He sped down the country road for the half-hour trip. During his horrible marriage to Jennifer, he’d worked as a teacher, and his students had achieved both academic and social successes. Jennifer had been the nightmare that drove Sean away from Collins Industries, Collins Enterprises, Collins Investments, and Collins Mutual, to list a few of his father’s multiple companies. Post divorce and cancer, Sean had made the decision to offer employees packages in cases of sickness. Anyone who worked for him would now receive a payoff equal to the job performance done over the years as part of a settlement. Money paid hospital bills.

Sean’s stomach clenched as he gazed at the sign for the Barnstable Charter High School parking lot. Sean parked Gerard’s fancy lawyer wheels that screamed “out to impress” right next to the about-to-be-sacked principal’s BMW sedan. The Aston Martin made the perfect goodbye gesture. Murray had been outclassed.

Sean leaned forward in his seat, refusing to feel guilty. He waited for the school bell to ring and watched students bounding outside.

Unlike most people, his family had money, and normally he wouldn’t like flaunting wealth. His Jeep Wrangler suited him just fine, but today he needed to look like the elite businessman he was. He stepped out a minute later, and in a fast walk, he strode down the halls. Sean winked the second he saw the school guard’s shocked face.

“You had cancer?” asked the older African American lady who coached the wrestling team.

“Yes, I did. I’m better now,” Sean said, smiling.

He inclined his head and passed the security desk then Sean turned right toward the principal’s office.

In his briefcase he carried the school board’s ruling and the proof of sale of the school to Collins Enterprises. Barnstable was a private school that followed school board law. The sale to his company had been finalized, but Sean had insisted on telling Murray in person. The minutes of the meeting would be posted at one that day. Victory waited for him, and justice tasted better than homemade chocolate chip cookies.

In the office, the overqualified secretary, Mattie, dropped her pencil on the floor. Sean made eye contact with her and the older woman smiled back. Then he picked up the pencil in stride, and handed it back to her. She opened her mouth to speak, and he shook his head, placing his finger over his lips to silently request her silence.

She smiled her response and swiveled her chair back to her computer.

He had seen Mattie in action and understood the older woman had known how to treat people more than anyone else in the office.

Outside the principal’s door, Sean straightened his tie into perfect alignment. His heart rate sped up and his entire body became alert then he heard her voice.

Gigi, or should he say, Giovanna Dumont. Her quiet, sweet voice unmanned him, making his palms sweat. Why would she be here? And how could she still steal his breath away?

Author Interview

When did you know that you wanted to be a writer?

Four or five years ago. Funny story here. I’m a Northern Catholic, but I moved to Miami eleven years ago. One day while celebrating Shabbat dinner with some Jewish friends of mine (and I always like being invited anywhere that involves food), the rabbi asked me what I do. I answered that I was unhappy with being a lawyer, and that I became a teacher temporarily to figure out what I wanted to do. He stared at my hands and asked, ‘why aren’t you a writer?’ I asked what and he explained I had the hands of a writer. I always secretly wrote horrible fan fiction. I thought about it. People do make money writing and it was what I loved to do. And so the professional journey began.

What was your inspiration for Chaperoning in Paris?

My own multiple trips to Paris as a young adult. Where the characters go is basically a travel log of my own. So the memories of those places lived through the setting. And as a writer, I was always told my issue was to dig deeper into characters. Gigi and Sean were both flawed characters and they forced me to go deep inside myself.

What is your favorite genre of romance?

My first love was historical. I critique a friend who writes historical, but I used to have a Harlequin subscription of books I hid under my bed. I first fell for HQN books with the Love and Laugher line that lasted for like a minute. I love funny romance. Then I fell for the Desire books.  So as a reader these helped form who I am. (For historicals one day I want to write a pirate book.)

What is your favorite book?

Whitney, My Love sold me on romance, so that book popped into my mind first.  I read almost every book out there for a while though so picking a favorite is hard.

Boxers, Briefs, or Boxer Briefs?

Before I was married, I’d have answered boxers. However I bought my husband boxer briefs and they are so amazing. As a newlywed, my answer is now boxer briefs. And I will forever picture the form fitting masculine romance novel heroes in them.

A question to readers from Victoria

Do readers prefer clean shaven men for chest and facial hair, a little hairy, or full on hair? I’ve always found the five o’clock shadow on my romance heroes hot and I do want some hair on the chest as hairless to me seems more vain. But I am curious what readers prefer, so let me know in the comments!

Thank you!

4 starMichel’s Review

Looking for a delicious forbidden love story?  Looking for a book loaded with angst, passion, and red hot sex?  A Hope And A Chance by Jennifer Foor has all of these elements and more.  It is a mesmerizing story of undeniable passion and undying love.

Hope’s world has been off kilter since her parents divorced a few years earlier.  Her father went through a mid life crisis and left the state.  The separation forced Hope and her mother to move in with her grandmother.  Hope has had to grow up fast.  She took accelerated classes and graduated at the age of seventeen.  She has broken up with her controlling boyfriend and spends most of her time with her best friend.  Although her mother is quite strict, their life is on an even keel and somewhat happy.  That is until her father moves back to the state with his new young girlfriend that is only a number of years older than Hope.  They want to establish a relationship with Hope once again.  Not only is she getting to know her father once again and adjust to his new life.  She will also have to learn to live with him and his new girlfriend because her mother has lost her job and her grandmother’s health is failing.  There is a great surprise when she moves into her father’s home.  His girlfriend’s younger brother, Chance, is living in the pool house.  He is twenty one and strictly off limits.

Chance has had to move with his sister and her older boyfriend after his life fell apart in the most horrific way.  His bright future was ruined and life was destroyed.  Now he is trying to pick up the pieces and find a new path for his life.  The one thing he doesn’t need is more trouble.  When Hope moves in with her father and his sister , he knows trouble is right next door.  Can he stay away from her?  Can he stay away from the forbidden?

Hope and Chance are drawn to one another.  Age doesn’t make a difference.  Their family can’t keep them apart.  They can’t deny the passion that burns deep within their souls for one another.  They will have to keep their relationship a secret until Hope turns eighteen. Keeping secrets isn’t easy.  Is their love strong enough to handle the deceptions and the truths?

Read A Hope And A Chance by Jennifer Foor.  It is a beautiful story of love and trust.  It is a story of passion that burns brighter than the past.  It is a story of taking chances and finding hope.

Freeing Him

A Hart Brothers Novel- Book 2

By A.M. Hargrove

Synopsis

*This novel contains mature content and is not intended for younger readers.

Kolson Hart and Gabriella Martinelli…destined to be together, fated to be torn apart.

After avoiding his father for years, Kolson knew asking his father, Langston Hart, for a favor would be like selling his soul to the devil. Only the devil wants more … more than Kolson is willing to pay. But some promises can’t be broken, not without losing what’s most important. For Kolson, that’s Gabriella Martinelli.

Left with two choices–pay up or risk everything–Kolson’s only way out is to do something drastic, something so monumental not even Langston will be able to interfere. The question is: Will it be enough to guarantee Gabriella’s safety from his father?

Kolson freed Gabriella from her past, and now he’s risking everything for her again. Will she be able to save him from the demon that hunts him? Or is fate too strong for them to fight?

As the suds rinse, I stare at and memorize everything about her. A deep clenching pain rips through my gut, and then I know it’s not true what they say about your heart breaking. It doesn’t even come close. Your heart doesn’t break. A gash splits your gut wide open and then it expands straight on up to your sternum until your heart explodes out of your chest. The f***ing thing isn’t broken. It’s goddamn annihilated. And there isn’t enough superglue in the entire world to piece it back together again. And then parts of you start to fall off, one by one. And you know it’s not possible to ever be put back together again. You’re f***ing Humpty Dumpty.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Kolson

“Mommy! Mommy! I’m scared. Where are you?” Dark. It’s so dark. I can’t see anything and my throat hurts so bad. I want my mommy. But she won’t answer me. Why won’t she come? She always comes when I call her at night. But she doesn’t come this time. And I keep calling her. My Spiderman pajamas are wet and I want my blankie because I’m cold. My teeth make a clicking noise because they keep chattering and they won’t stop. I have to pee again and I don’t know where the potty is. I’ve already wet myself once and I don’t want to do it again. Mommy will be mad at me and I don’t want to ruin my Spiderman pajamas. Maybe if I roll up in a ball I’ll be warmer. After a while it doesn’t help much, so I call for Mommy some more. But she still doesn’t come.

There’s a noise somewhere and I lift my head. I think I was sleeping. “Mommy, is that you? Mommy!” I sit up and it’s still so dark out. I want to see my Spiderman pajamas so I hold my arm in front of my face but it’s too dark to see anything. I scream. And scream so long my throat hurts. And I cry. “Mommy! I want my mommy!” I curl up, knees to chest, and rock back and forth, crying for Mommy. But she never comes.

Something scrapes in front of me. Is it a monster? I think there’s a monster in here and I scream.

“Shut up. Stop that screaming or I’ll leave.”

I can’t stop screaming. I try but they keep coming out of me, even though I don’t want them to. Something covers my mouth, and a mean man tells me if I don’t shut up, I’ll have to stay in the dark forever. His voice scares me more than the dark. More than not having my mommy. My body shakes and suddenly my voice is gone. I can’t talk.

“That’s better. Now listen. This is your new home and the sooner you learn some manners, the better it will be. Behave, and your life will be easy. Obey me, and you’ll be given treats. Disobey, and you’ll be left here alone. Do you understand me?”

The mean man says things to me but I don’t know what they mean. I only sit and try to see him. But I only see the dark.

“Good. Now eat this.”

Something is pushed into my mouth. I can’t eat it because my throat hurts so bad. I start to choke. Then I vomit.

The mean man yells and he wipes my face. It’s so dark, I can’t see him.

“Drink.”

He shoves a straw in my mouth and I drink. When I do, it burns my throat and I cry.

“More.”

I drink more but it hurts. My face is wet from crying.

“Good.”

Then I hear the scraping sound and it’s quiet again. And I curl up and cry. I want my mommy. I want her to sing to me and rub my back like she does when my head hurts. I want her to kiss me and tell me a story. I want to tell her I didn’t mean it when I did those bad things and didn’t listen to her. Maybe that’s why she’s not here now. I’m sorry, Mommy. I didn’t mean it. I’ll be good. Come back, Mommy.

It’s often said that an addict has to hit rock bottom before they can begin their journey to recovery. My story is much different. Surprisingly enough, I’m not an addict and never have been. But I’ve been at the bottom. More than once. I hit it the first time when I was only seven years old. Not only was it the bottom. It was hell. It’s when I learned to lick the fiery flames of the devil himself. Only my devil was a dragon. Also known as my father. What I didn’t realize was that time was only a dip in the barrel compared to what would happen to me later.

The first time I thought he broke me but I didn’t know how wrong I was. It wasn’t until later that I realized what kind of destruction he could spawn. And that time I didn’t only break, he took me apart piece by piece, until there was nothing left to crush.

William Shakespeare wrote, “If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?” Well, for years I was wronged. And now I plan to seek revenge. Carefully, slowly, and methodically. And when the time is right, I will strike with everything I have.

4 starTracey’s Review

Since helping Gabriella Martinelli escape her dark past, Kolson Hart finally feels like he’s found his home in her. But in saving Gabby, Kolson had to make a deal with the devil, and it’s time to pay his debt. When Kolson’s father calls due the ‘IOU’ that Kolson owes him, Kolson has no choice except to disappear to save Gabby from Langston’s cruelty. Only slaying the proverbial dragon will allow Kolson and Gabby to finally live free from the shadows that threaten to consume them.

FREEING HIM is the second in the Hart Brothers series by A.M. Hargrove, and picks up immediately following FREEING HER (Book 1). Although I had not read the first book, I was able to follow the story without feeling like I was at a loss. Kolson is one hot alpha man, which is completely understandable, given that he spent his childhood feeling like he had no control whatsoever. He has overcome much of what he suffered at the hands of his father, Langston, and is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. Part of being in control means taking care of Gabby, and everything that he does, he does with that purpose in mind. Gabby is one strong lady, too, having survived an abuse-filled past, and can definitely hold her own with the men in her life.

FREEING HIM is a fast-paced read, not only hot and sexy, but full of intrigue as well. The crossover of characters from A.M.’s TRAGIC series made for some interesting times, and the romance between Kolson and Gabby was off-the-charts smoldering. This is definitely one book couple that I wouldn’t mind seeing more of, and would love to get a glimpse of them in future books in the series.

A M Hargrove Bio:

A.M. hargroveOne day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job. Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include Kissing Fire, Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge, the series the Guardians of Vesturon (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, Beginnings and reEmergent), Dark Waltz, Tragically Flawed, Tragic Desires, and Exquisite Betrayal.

Other than being in love with being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

(If you’re wondering, it didn’t happen EXACTLY that way, but….)

You can also find her on Goodreads as Emerson St. Clair. Her novella series, Dirty Nights, is available and those are a little dark, a little erotic and a lot sexy!

Excerpt

Natalie Sweet’s blue eyes went wide and her fingers twisted around the pearl necklace. “You don’t have a filing system?”

Sean O’Dell shrugged. “You’re looking at it.”

Her long fingers sailed over each round white pearl. Damn, he really wanted to know the story behind that necklace. He’d never seen her without it. The woman probably showered in it.

In half a breath, he had a fully realized vision of her soft, creamy, naked skin covered in suds. The mental image sucked all the air out of the room and turned his half chubby into a full–blown hard–on.

Natalie looked around at the paper explosion in his office. “How do you live like this?”

He kept one of the taller stacks of paper between them to block her view of the growing bulge behind his zipper. “Cleanliness is over rated.”

“You’re hilarious.” She didn’t even bother to look his way as she surveyed the damage. “Okay, if we divide the room up into equal portions, we should each be able to take a quadrant to search. Divide and conquer for the win.”

He shifted from one leg to another. Spending time in close quarters with Natalie, watching her skirt swirl around her ass, wasn’t going to help him lose this boner anytime soon. “Let me look for the reports. I’ll let you know when I find them.”

She tossed her clipboard onto his guest chair— the one spot in the whole office unencumbered by piles of paper. “We can get through this whole mess faster if we work together. I can even devise an organizational structure for the records based on your work habits.”

Excitement turned her cheeks pink as she chewed her bottom lip and bounced from foot to foot. If she ever looked at him with the same amount of giddy anticipation, he’d be in even worse trouble than he was already.

“Trust me.” She locked gazes with him, hitting him with the full force of her blue eyes. “People pay me big bucks to do that for them.”

“Any other option?” He already knew the answer to that one.

She grinned. “You could toss me over your shoulder again and throw me in the cooler.”

The idea of touching her held more appeal than it should. He took a half step forward.

Natalie jumped back, but not before he noticed her quick intake of breath and how her eyes darkened with what looked at lot like lust.

He winked, loving the fact that he’d knocked her by–the–book self off kilter. “Gotcha.”

He couldn’t wait to do it again.

Michel’s Review

Who says opposites don’t attract? Hollywood On Tap, book 2 in the Sweet Salvation Brewery series is a classic in this type of story.

Natalie is an OCD control freak. She has to have everything documented, charted, and planned every step of the way. Her sister Miranda has brought her in to bring the brewery into a higher profit margin and become more cost efficient. When she encounters Sean, the slobby, unorganized, and non talkative brewmaster, the battle begins. She wants Sean to embrace her way of running the business. Sean wants Natalie to leave him alone so that he create an award winning beer that will put the brewery on the maps. Both want the brewery to succeed but are at each others throats on how to accomplish it.

The two are forced to work together. When accidents, missing shipments, and other mysterious things start to happen that could ruin the brewery, the two will have to find out who is behind the destruction.

What starts as a battle of wills and moves onto solving a mystery of who’s behind the brewery destruction, Sean and Natalie will find something else. They will find a sizzling hot attraction that leads to love.

Avery Flynn wrote a book loaded with humor, steeped in intrigue and mystery, interesting characters, and red hot romance. Hollywood On Tap was thoroughly an enjoyable book from page one to the end.

Author Bio:

AFlynnShoes-1-230x344Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip.

She fell in love with romance while reading Johanna Lindsey’s Mallory books. It wasn’t long before Avery had read through all the romance offerings at her local library. Needing a romance fix, she turned to Harlequin’s four books a month home delivery service to ease the withdrawal symptoms. That worked for a short time, but it wasn’t long before the local book stores’ staffs knew her by name.

Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

The Law Of Moses

By Amy Harmon

Release Date: November 27, 2014

57761-addtogoodreads

Synopsis

If I tell you right up front, right in the beginning that I lost him, it will be easier for you to bear. You will know its coming, and it will hurt. But youll be able to prepare.

Someone found him in a laundry basket at the Quick Wash, wrapped in a towel, a few hours old and close to death. They called him Baby Moses when they shared his story on the ten o’clock news – the little baby left in a basket at a dingy Laundromat, born to a crack addict and expected to have all sorts of problems. I imagined the crack baby, Moses, having a giant crack that ran down his body, like he’d been broken at birth. I knew that wasn’t what the term meant, but the image stuck in my mind. Maybe the fact that he was broken drew me to him from the start.

It all happened before I was born, and by the time I met Moses and my mom told me all about him, the story was old news and nobody wanted anything to do with him. People love babies, even sick babies. Even crack babies. But babies grow up to be kids, and kids grow up to be teenagers. Nobody wants a messed up teenager.

And Moses was messed up. Moses was a law unto himself. But he was also strange and exotic and beautiful. To be with him would change my life in ways I could never have imagined. Maybe I should have stayed away. Maybe I should have listened. My mother warned me. Even Moses warned me. But I didn’t stay away.

And so begins a story of pain and promise, of heartache and healing, of life and death. A story of before and after, of new beginnings and never-endings. But most of all…a love story.

Excerpt

“You still talk to your horses.”

I jerked and Sackett shifted, not liking the spike of energy that shot through me or the fact that my fingers had yanked at his mane.

Moses stood silhouetted in the barn door, holding what looked to be a large canvas in his hand.

I hadn’t realized I was still talking to Sackett, and I did a quick examination of what I’d just said. I believe I had just uttered an embarrassing rant on people named Moses not being allowed in Georgia. “Oh, Lord,” I prayed silently but fervently, “you can make the blind man see and the deaf man hear so it shouldn’t be too much to ask to make this man forget everything he’s just seen and heard.”

“What does Sackett think about those new, stricter laws in Georgia?”

I looked up at the rafters, “Hey, thanks for comin’ through for me, Lord.”

I loosened the cinch that secured the saddle around Sackett’s middle and pulled the saddle from his back, hoisting it onto the saddle horse and removing the blanket beneath without looking at Moses. I was kind of surprised that he remembered Sackett’s name.

Moses took a few steps inside the barn and I could see a small smile playing around his lips. I gave Sackett a firm pat on his rump signaling I was done, and he trotted off, clearly eager to go.

“You’re back.” I said, refusing to embarrass myself further by getting angry.

“I took Tag home. He had big plans to train for his next fight old school, like Rocky, but discovered that it’s a little more appealing in the movies. Plus, I don’t do a very good Apollo Creed.”

“Tag’s a fighter?”

“Yeah. Mixed martial arts stuff. He’s pretty good.”

“Huh.” I didn’t know what else to say. I didn’t know anything about the sport. “Didn’t Apollo Creed die in one of the movies?”

“Yeah. The black guy always dies at the hands of the white man.”

I rolled my eyes, and he grinned, making me grin with him before I remembered that I was embarrassed and ticked off that he had kissed me and left town. It felt a little too much like the past. The grin slipped from my face and I turned away, busying myself shaking out the saddle blankets.

“So why did you come back?” I kept my eyes averted. He was quiet for a minute, and I bit my lips so I wouldn’t start to babble into the awkward silence.

“The house needs more work,” he replied at last. “And I’m thinking of changing my name.”

My head shot up, and I met his smirk with confusion.

“Huh?”

“I heard there was this new law in Georgia. Nobody named Moses can even visit. So I’m thinking a name change is in order.”

I just shook my head and laughed, both and embarrassed and pleased at his underlying meaning. “Shut up, Apollo,” I said, and it was his turn to laugh.

Excerpt

Why am I not affected by this, Vaughn? Why doesn’t it bother me that three days ago I shot a man? I killed a man. I think that makes me sick. I’m a sick, sick person.”
“That doesn’t make you sick, Grace. That makes you strong.” He kisses me again and then stands up and walks out of the plunge pool. My body gets heavy and I immediately want nothing more than to get back in the water and hide underneath its soothing surface.
Vaughn walks us over to the edge of the river, grabbing a towel from the little cabana as he goes. He tosses it down on the concrete edge and then places me on top of it. My leg hurts a little now and my clothes are sticking to me. “Lift up your arms.”
I do as I’m told and he peels off the man-sized white t-shirt. My nipples are erect and hard, my breasts firm and taut. I look up at my husband and he’s shirtless too. I watch his fingers as he unbuttons his jeans, kicks off his shoes, and then drops his pants. It takes both hands to get the heavy wet denim to cooperate and when he’s finally standing there naked, he puts his arms out and says, “This is me.”
And then he reaches down for my hand, like he wants to pull me to my feet. I hesitate because of the pain it will take to stand up. But then I decide to trust him and place my hand in his.
He pulls me up and I manage to keep the weight off my bad leg and just balance on the good one. Vaughn holds me steady for a second, and then he takes my hand and places it on his thickly muscled bicep. “Hold tight,” he says.
I do.
And then his fingers unbutton my shorts and he tugs on them for several seconds, rocking the sopping wet fabric over my hips until they plop to the ground.
He steps back a little and I let go of his arm.
I put my arms out like he did and say, “This is me.”
I’m pulled back into an embrace and I notice everything about this moment.
The sun is warm. The wind floats past my wet body, making it cool. There’s a bird singing a sweet song on a branch above our heads.
His heart beats fast. Mine beats faster.
His lips touch my ear so softly I shudder.
“This,” he says, “is us.”

Excerpt

I pull my hand away slowly, leaving all the feelings we were developing behind in

the palm of his hand. “The timing is wrong.”

“Bullshit!”

Startled, I jump in my seat.

Lowering his voice, he says, “That’s a cop out. I know you feel something for me.

I see how you react because I also feel it when I’m around you. There’s something here

and you’re just scared.”

“Scared of what?”

“Scared to have a life without Cory and thinking you have to justify it to others.

The problem with that is that when you start justifying it, it will make you feel like your

love for Cory was less. It wasn’t. It’s just different. He’s not here, Rochelle.”

“Stop it. Stop talking about Cory and take me home.”

“Now you want to stop talking about him?” He looks surprised. “I can’t win with

you when it comes to him.” He shifts the car into drive.

“This is not a competition, Dex.”

Disappointment slides onto his face. “Then why is he being shoved in my face

every time we make a move?”

“This is one of the reasons why we won’t work. We see things very differently.”

“One of the reasons? Name another because from where I sit, we fit like two

puzzle pieces clicking together.”

“You’re a supposed recovering addict. You have sex with anyone who offers.

“That’s it. Right there. You play like you know who I am, but you don’t. That’s

why the lies are so easily believed. I can tell what you’re doing. You’re giving me an out

that I don’t want. You’re allowing yourself to believe the worst about me to ease your

conscience, but it won’t—”

“You know what? Not everything is about you and your past. You lost a band

mate and friend, but I lost my soulmate!”
