A Mess of a Man Synopsis

Womanizer, Man Whore, Player, Heartbreaker are all familiar names to Ben Rhoades. He prefers Money Man or Sex God, but he doesn’t let other people’s opinions rule him. And he’s only gotten worse without his compass, his best friend, whose devastating death at a young age has taught him a valuable lesson about not getting too close to anyone … ever. Until one smart and stubborn woman with eye-catching curves throws him for a loop and refuses to be tamed.

Samantha Calhoun has her life on track even after the shattering break-up with the guy she’d thought she’d wanted to marry. With her chin held high, she focuses on her career, building her business and making a success of it all. Only a chance meeting has her lost in a set of alluring steel gray eyes that have her steps faltering and her heart leaping out of her chest. Forewarned by not-so-flattering rumors plus his no-holds-bar rules, she tries desperately to play his game while guarding her heart.

Only they have no idea of the journey they’re about to undertake when their lives collide. Ultimately they’ll tackle the biggest test of their lives because she is his game changer. The one, who through the ensuing wreckage, can domesticate the mess of a man that he is.

A Mess of a Man Excerpt

There is finality to the sound of the door closing behind her. A sort of tormenting peace knowing the end has come. It’s not like I should have expected things to go on this way for long. How could they?

I stare holes in the walls as if I can still see her, the one woman I let in.

Sweeter than peach cobbler, she hardly has a bad thing to say about anybody—until now. Her parting description of me, beginning with ass and ending with hole, reverberates through my hollow heart, as I stand here rooted to my spot. I’m not even shocked, as this isn’t the first time I’ve been on the receiving end of that sentiment. I’m only surprised because I don’t think I’ve ever heard her so much as mutter a single curse word before. And the first time I do, it’s aimed squarely at me.

My hands tighten around a tumbler filled with amber liquid before I toss back its contents hoping for oblivion or something close to it. This road is so familiar. Only this time is different. I never cared like I do now. She means more to me than a quick fuck. Hadn’t I been about to tell her just that? How could things have gone wrong so fast?

Don’t be a dumbass. You can still fix this.

Instead, I stubbornly stay embedded to my spot because nothing can change the outcome. It’s a truth she and I know will haunt me until my last breath. And it’s created a wall between us I’m unable to climb … even if you gave me a damn ladder.

I’ve never been much of a risk-taker when it comes to matters of the heart. I can fill a bank account with a number having many zeros behind it from my astute choices in the market. But I can’t be a man a woman stays with. Hadn’t I warned her about that too?

Unable to see past my own shitty existence, I long for her to come back. I want to believe it’s all been some kind of mistake and I can forget what I know to be true. As the seconds continue to tick by, the inevitability that things are really over sinks in. My window of opportunity quickly closes as fast as her car door slams and the engine fires to life.

She’s so close, yet miles away. The longer I let the minutes expand between us I know distance won’t make the heart grow fonder. But maybe it’s for the best. Love, or whatever masquerades as it, just isn’t enough for the dirty, fucked up truth. Right when things were better than I ever expected, facts messed it up.

Groaning, I launch the crystal glass worth a small fortune at the door I can’t seem to force myself towards. A beautiful show of light plays off the shards as they cascade down in an explosion of fireworks. Visually, it’s what I feel inside as desolation constricts and then obliterates my chest because the best thing I ever had is gone … leaving me with only the certainty I’m meant to be with her.

I love you, I whisper for the first time and in place of goodbye. She left me and will never hear it. I can only pray we both survive what’s to come.

Tracey’s Review

Ben Rhoades seems to have it all. Sexy, smart, and successful, he’s well-known around Charleston for his reputation as a womanizing manwhore. When a chance encounter brings event planner Samantha Calhoun into his orbit, Ben is immediately smitten, and will stop at nothing to get to know her. Samantha has been burned by love before. She’s intrigued by Ben, but is more a forever than for the moment kind of woman. Will her love be enough to show this mess of a man what is most important in this life?

Authors A.M. Hargrove and Terri E. Laine first introduced readers to Ben Rhoades in CRUEL AND BEAUTIFUL, as the best friend to tragic hero Drew McKnight. In A MESS OF A MAN, we see a different Ben, one that has suffered great loss, and is living something of a half-life as a result. Still dealing with the grief of losing his best friend, Ben is determined that he will never open himself up to any kind of deeper emotion, opting instead for shallow encounters and avoiding commitment.

Having thoroughly enjoyed the authors’ writing style in their first book, I was really looking forward to reading Ben’s story. Although very different from CRUEL AND BEAUTIFUL, this book is no less engaging. A.M. and Terri have crafted a story of redemption, of self-discovery, and of the opportunity to choose love, even when love has caused much pain in the past. I really like that the emotion that has shaped Ben’s character in this book is not necessarily a romantic love, but is extremely powerful nonetheless. Seeing him overcome his demons and go past his comfort zone makes for a very emotional and uplifting read. All of the characters here, from Ben and Sam, to Sam’s family and girl posse, as well as Ben’s family, are interesting, and really help make the story what it is. Once I began reading, it was difficult to put this book aside, because I was invested in seeing whether Ben would rise to his potential or remain stuck in the life that he had created. I also really appreciated Sam’s storyline, as it is very timely, and really is a catalyst for the way that things finally play out between her and Ben.

I highly recommend A MESS OF A MAN. It’s a solid 4.5-star read, and another success for the authors. I look forward to reading more from them in the future.

A Mess of a Man about the authors

A.M. HARGROVE

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M.
Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn’t do something
soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been
dreaming of her whole life. So, she rolled down the passenger window of her
fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase. Luckily, the
pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick
reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head. Feeling a tad guilty
about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street
before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what laptop out the
window. She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called
her boss, and quit her job. Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and
told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly
again).

So began A. M. Hargrove’s career as a Naughty and Nice Romance Author.
Her books include the following: Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge and Kissing
Fire (The Edge Series); The Guardians of Vesturon Series (Survival,
Resurrection, Determinant, reEmergent, and Beginnings); Dark Waltz, Death
Waltz, Tragically Flawed (Tragic 1), Tragic Desires (Tragic 2), Exquisite
Betrayal, Dirty Nights; and lastly Freeing Her, Freeing Him, and Kestrel—all
part of the Hart Brothers Series.

Other than being in love with writing about love,
she loves chocolate, ice cream, and coffee and is positive they should be added
as part of the USDA food groups.

Synopsis

There are a few things I, Evie Hart, thought I knew for sure:

1. That I hated Griff Sinclair ever since that night. You know, the night where he totally pulled a Mr. Darcy on me at the dance.
2. That Griff Sinclair hated me. I mean, seriously, would it kill him to smile at me. Just once.
3. That my life plan for post-graduation was golden.
4. That I knew exactly what I wanted.
5. And none of that included Griff.

But everything I thought I knew is thrown out the window by the biggest surprise of my life. All it takes is one touch, one kiss, one night . . . that leads to so much more.

I need to know what Griff means to me, what I mean to him, and what really happened all those years ago. If we even have a future together. And I need to figure it out before we graduate in seven days. Before I move out of Vermont, hundreds of miles away from Griff. I’ve taken risks, but this might be the biggest gamble of my life.

The final book in the With Me series. Each book in this series stands alone and has a firm HEA.

Michel’s Review

The With Me series by Elyssa Patrick has come to an end.  Dream With Me is the fourth and final book.  It’s one week until graduation.  Griff Sinclair has wasted four years pining for a woman that he felt was out of his reach.  Rather than reacting in a good, flirty way when he first met Evie Hart, he gave her the impression that she wasn’t worth his time or effort.  With one week left he has to reveal his heart and true feelings.

Griff Sinclair is a complicated guy.  He is the strong, silent type.  He’s studious and mysterious.  At times he can come across as cold hearted.  He has been shaped and molded by his young life.  He is reluctant to show his feelings.  When his heart’s desire is on the line,  it’s time to step up his game.

Evie Hart is a fun, smart , ambitious girl.  She is the exact opposite of Griff.  She is drawn to the man and hopes that they can come to a truce.

When the truth finally comes out, Evie is in for a shock.  Griff is in for the ultimate challenge.  Together they make sense.  Apart, they are incomplete.

I have enjoyed the With Me Series by Elyssa Patrick.  Griff has been a mystery throughout each book in the series.  Finally readers are getting his story.  It will not disappoint.  And no… his brother is not a spy!

I loved the ending because it gave readers a glimpse of each couple in the series after graduation.

But it’s a lot harder than I expected. I can’t escape my image. Classes are difficult, and I’m struggling. And then there’s Caleb Fox.

Sexy, intriguing Caleb Fox.

Caleb is the one man who doesn’t want to use me. He breaks down my walls. He challenges me. He wants me. And I just don’t know if I can give him the same–or if he’ll stick around when he finds out my shameful secret that the tabloids haven’t managed to uncover.

Dating him is risky enough, but loving him could break me.

Synopsis

An MMA Middleweight fighter gets blindsided by love in the latest Beyond the Cage Romance by the author of Fighting the Fall.

Dane Hardy’s MMA career was on the rise until a legal head kick killed one of his opponents inside the octagon. Consumed by guilt and depression, Dane quit the cage and took a job in security at a Las Vegas casino. But when Dane steps in to break up a brawl on the casino floor, the video goes viral. And now the Maximum Fight League wants him back…

Sports broadcaster Colby Edwards is out to prove that she’s more than just a pretty face. Going undercover as a ring girl, she plans to investigate what happens beyond the cage. And her timing couldn’t be better. Getting the story on Dane Hardy’s return could make Colby’s career. But the ex-fighter has his guard up against all comers. Breaking down his defenses consumes Colby, but not as much as the passion that ensues when she succeeds…

Michel’s Review

Colby Edwards has moved back to Las Vegas after her father had a heart attack.  She wanted to move closer to her family.  Sadly she had to give up her career as a Sports Broadcaster.  The jobs in her field in Vegas are slim to none.  She’s forced to work on a show that is below her journalism level.  When an opening for a position on a show covering the MMA becomes available, she immediately applies.  But getting the job comes with conditions.  She has to prove her skills as an investigative reporter.  The only story she can come up with is fight that ended in an accidental death.  When she started dating Dane Hardy, she never imagined she would have to use him as a gain for her career.

Dane left the ring after his last fight ended with an accidental death.  Since he left his upcoming fighting career, he has been working as a bouncer.  When that job falls through he gets a job with Colby’s father making airplane parts.

Dane is finally finding peace once again.  He’s met a great girl and has a good job.  Life is looking good until Colby stirs the pot.  When he finds out she is a reporter just looking for a sensational story, he’s beyond hurt, he’s livid.

As Colby begins to uncover the truth, things begin to look different.  For one thing, it may be the truth that gets Dane back in the ring once again.  Where he belongs.  But the truth may hurt other innocent people.  The truth could save other fighter’s lives.

This was a very good book.  I would of liked to see a bit more romance between Colby and Dane.  The story itself was an eye opener in the MMA world and the harsh realities of real life.

I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it.

Michel’s Review
Get your jersey’s on and get ready for some hot action on the ice with the Carolina Cold Fury Hockey team.  Hawke by Sawyer Bennett is the fifth book in the sensational Carolina Cold Fury Hockey Series.  The star of the ice is Hawke Therrien, the team party boy.  As always there’s more to the man than the way he fills his jersey and plays a mean game.  There’s more than the rumors that run rampant in the Sports media.  Sure the man can party but he also has a true heart.
***
Hawke was madly in love with his girlfriend Vale Campbell when he was called up to the pros.  What should of been a night of celebration and partying turned into the worst night of his life.  The next morning his girlfriend dumped him without any explanations and he was forced to leave without any resolutions.  Thus begins his professional career and womanizing reputation.
***
Years later he lands a position on the Carolina Cold Fury Hockey team.  He’s a different man.  He’s grown up, become an A-list player, and has become a more settled person.  But when Vale Campbell lands a job as a team trainer, all bets are off.  He wants explanations.  He wants to hurt her like she hurt him.  Soon he realizes that Vale Campbell has always had his heart and now he wants to win her heart.  He didn’t become a super athlete by accident, he did because of hard work and dedication.  He’s going to win Vale’s heart once again with hard work and determination.  He has to let go of the past and embrace the future.
***
Vale Campbell was in love with Hawke Therrien since she was sixteen but realized they were in a destructive relationship.  She needed a clean break to get her life together.  Years later she has to face Hawke .  This time he deserves the truth.  She still loves the man fiercely but is that love enough in the new life she has made?
***
Sawyer Bennett wrote a touching second chance romance that made both of her characters face their flaws and weaknesses.  She also gave them tremendous strengths that were very admirable.  She made them work for their love and happiness.  I thoroughly enjoyed the latest edition to the Carolina Cold Fury Hockey series.
***
Read Hawke by Sawyer Bennett.  This book will melt your heart.

Add Bennett to Goodreads

Book Blurb:

Bennett Morse devotes his time to chasing two things: an NHL career and women. He’s the easygoing member of his three-man line on the Fenway Flyers, content to play the game he loves and soak up the female attention it brings – as long as it’s from a different woman each time. He learned the hard way that choosing only one leads to heartache.

Newly single attorney Charlotte Holloway finds just what she needs in Bennett – a sweet, sexy man to ease the burn of her recent breakup. One night is all she wants from the left winger who seems to have all the right moves. Soon circumstance draws her back to Bennett, and the sparks between them become a fiery blaze. But with the stakes high, will they risk it all and put their hearts on the line?

5Star

Tracey’s Review

When Bennett Morse and Charlotte Holloway meet by chance and decide to spend the night together, neither one is prepared for the outcome of their actions, or that their encounter would lead to anything more. But, when Fate, kismet, the Universe, call it what you will, steps in, the two find out quickly that sometimes things, and people, are not what they seem, and that life as they know it is about to be very different.

I have been a fan of Brenda for a very long time, and am never disappointed by the stories and characters that she creates. BENNETT, the second book in Brenda’s On the Line series, is no exception. In Bennett, Brenda has written a man that is not the usual player. Yes, he’s had his share of action, but his heart is in the game, and in getting called up to the professional team. When he meets Charlotte, who has recently broken up with her boyfriend, he is smitten. Everything about her appeals to him, and he is more than ready to see where things go. But Charlotte, raised by a mother who depended on men for her self-worth, isn’t about to jump right into another relationship. Strong and capable, she’s more than able to take care of herself, and isn’t afraid to let Bennett know.

What really makes this book so special is the way that Brenda continually takes her characters out of their comfort zones and allows them to rise to heights that they didn’t know they could attain. Bennett is so much more than just a hot hockey player, and is willing to overcome his personal demons to show Charlotte just how much she means to him, and what he’s willing to give up to be with her. And, Charlotte, afraid in her own way to let Bennett in, finds in him a safe place, where she can let someone else help her carry the load.

BENNETT is a wonderful addition to the On the Line series, and the story, the heart, the wonderful way that the main characters mesh, along with the supporting characters and their stories, combine to earn this read an easy 4.5 stars. And, having gotten to know Liam just a little bit in this book, I can’t wait for his story in the near future.

Book Blurb:

Killian Bosch knows he’s his own worst enemy – he just doesn’t give a damn. The star forward of a minor league hockey team, he’s unstoppable on the ice. His reckless behavior, devil-may-care attitude and complete disregard for consequences have made him a major source of headaches for the Fenway Flyers’ brass.

But the new Flyers owner is more steel than brass. Sidney Stahl is a disciplined woman who parlayed earnings from a college job into a real estate empire. She’s determined to transform the Flyers from marketing nightmare to hockey powerhouse. Once she gets Killian in line, she knows the rest of the team will follow his lead.

The seduction of his sexy new team owner is a challenge too forbidden for Killian to resist. Sidney plays into his attraction as a means of controlling him, but soon finds that she’s the one surrendering. It’s all on the line as Killian and Sidney are forced to choose – business or pleasure?

4.5 Star

Tracey’s Review

As the new owner of the Fenway Flyers, businesswoman Sidney Stahl has got her work cut out for her. Her only goal is to get her hockey team in fighting form, and to convince team captain Killian Bosch to set a good example for his teammates. Killian is anything but sedate. Working and playing hard, the last thing he’s looking for is to settle down and tow the line, but saying no to Sidney might not be as easy as he thinks.

KILLIAN is the first in a new series by author Brenda Rothert. Brenda is no stranger to delivering stories about hot hockey players. Her Fire On Ice series features some of the hottest pro players out there, and Killian and his friends are right in line to continue the trend. Killian is passionate, dedicated to the game and to his brothers on the team. Inspired to play his best by his new coach, Orion Caldwell, he finds himself drawn to Sidney, the new owner of the Flyers. Sidney knows that she should stay away from Killian, that getting involved with him is not the professional thing to do, but the heart wants what it wants, and these two definitely want each other.

I very much enjoyed reading KILLIAN. As always, Brenda has written a love story between characters with a lot of heart, but which is also absolutely full of passion and heat. Sidney and Killian are great foils for each other, each inspiring the other to evolve into better versions of themselves. Although their story is mostly wrapped up in this book, I look forward to seeing more of them in future books in the On the Line series, and to reading both Liam’s and Bennett’s stories.

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

 4.5 StarTracey’s Review

Sadie and Nathan Hunt have always had the perfect marriage. Really, that’s how people introduce them, and Sadie has always believed that they lived up to it. Until lately. Lately, Nathan isn’t the husband that he’s always been, and Sadie is left feeling alone and confused. When new neighbor Finn Cohen moves in, he and Sadie begin spending time together. A lot of time. Before long, Sadie is finding Nathan’s distance a little more tolerable, but when lines begin to blur, deciding what matters most will take everything she has.

This book absolutely wrung me out. I mean, the emotions, people. It was like a roller coaster; you’re hanging on for dear life, but can’t stop the ride because it’s that thrilling, that enthralling. That’s what reading SLIP OF THE TONGUE was like for me.

I had read previous books by author Jessica Hawkins, and enjoyed them, so was really looking forward to this story. Forbidden romance, possible love triangle, what wasn’t to like? Oh.My.Goodness, I am telling you, this book. I got immediately and completely sucked in, and believe me when I tell you that I read later than I have in forever just so that I could finish this book, because I could not put it down.

The characters are complex in SLIP OF THE TONGUE; Jessica has done a great job of creating a realistically possible situation, along with characters that seem more human and easier to relate to than not. There were elements that I liked and did not like in Sadie, Nathan, and Finn, things that made it understandable, though not acceptable, regarding the choices that they made. Some of my favorite characters were actually supporting ones, especially Sadie’s boss, Amelia, and Sadie’s brother, Andrew, and niece, Bell (she was hoot; she’ll be kicking butt and taking names in a few years, bet on it).

SLIP OF THE TONGUE is a book that I had waited for with anticipation, and I can happily say that it does not disappoint. This book is an emotional, realistic, sometimes gritty read, and gets a solid 4.5 stars from me. I look forward to reading more from Jessica in the near future, and wouldn’t mind seeing Andrew get his own story. Grab this one and read it. I feel certain that you will not regret it.

Meet Maggie Teaser

Excerpt

Maggie, Freshmen year

After being quizzed about the Dewey Decimal system, and failing, I returned to my room in shame. At this rate, if I wanted to work on campus, I’d be washing dishes in the dining hall. Nothing could be grosser than the used food and unclean dishes of thousands of college students. I gagged at the thought as I opened our door.
Inside, Jennifer—my perfectly nice and perfectly normal roommate—was straddling a guy on my desk chair, making out.

She might have been trying to eat his face. I couldn’t really tell in the two seconds I stared at them before clamping my eyes shut. I know I spied her tongue. Outside of her mouth. All I could see of him were his dark hair, long legs, and brown Wallabee boots.

Panicked about interrupting something, and simultaneously feeling like a prude, I backed my way through the open door. After it quietly clicked close, I pressed my head against the cool metal.

I could go back to the library, except I left there ten minutes ago. The dorm lounge was an option, but this time of day meant it would be filled with some random club. I couldn’t remember if Thursday’s meeting was German Lovers or Save the Geoducks—our school mascot. Neither appealed to me.

I stared harder at the painted metal, wishing the make-out session on the other side would end sooner rather than later.

“Are you locked out?” The blond guy from down the hall rested his head on the bulletin board next to my room.

“Or are you praying?”

Pressing my cheek on the door, I twisted to see him more clearly.

“It’s okay if you are. Pray if you’ve got to.”

“I’m not. Just thinking.”

A loud moan sounded from inside the room. “Oh, oh, oh God.”

“Sounds like someone in there is praying.” His lips curled into a smile. “You might want to step away, lest someone think you’re a pervert for eavesdropping.”

I jumped away from the door. “I wasn’t listening!”

Chuckling, he held up his hands in defense. “Not judging you. Praying and voyeurism both have their places, usually in Madonna videos.”

Another not so soft groan carried from my room. I took a step farther away. My favorite black on black Swatch showed the time as four o’clock. Too early to go to dinner. Looks like I’ll be going to the lounge after all.

“You want to come hang out in my room until they finish whatever they’re doing in there?” His offer sounded genuine and his smile was more than friendly. He gestured over his shoulder to the open door across the hall and down a few rooms. “I can promise you my roommate isn’t in there making out with anyone. We should be safe.”

Selah, Freshman Year

“Miss Elmore.”

Great. Despite most definitely being outside of class and off campus, he’d reverted to formal names.

“Mr. Vincent.”

“I’m surprised to see you here.” He ignored introductions to his friend.

“I could say the same. I didn’t realize you lived in Olympia.”

“I don’t.”

Geez, this conversation couldn’t be more boring. Maybe his companion was friendly. I stuck out my hand. “Hi, I’m Selah, one of Mr. Vincent’s students at Evergreen.”

“Pleased to meet you. I’m Kevin.” If someone could be described as beige, he was that person. Nothing remarkable about him except how unremarkable he looked. “Are you taking Jason’s sex class?”

Thankfully, I remained composed enough not to swallow my tongue. “Is that how he’s describing it? Professor?” I held my gaze steady on Jason’s face. I swore I saw his cheeks color with pink.

“Kevin.” His voice lowered, stern and threatening.

Kevin’s grin told me he enjoyed teasing Jason. They must have been old friends. “Fine, are you in Professor Vincent’s biology class?”

“I am. I’m hoping for an A.”

Kevin’s clever eyes swept over me. “What year are you?”

“First.”

Jason groaned while Kevin nodded and asked, “Tell me, Selah, has anyone ever called you Lolita before?”

Now my own cheeks heated. My skirt suddenly felt too short—the gap between it and my boots exposing a lot of fishnet covered skin. Or it could have been my short pigtails. I realized all I needed was a lollipop.

“Can’t say it’s happened before, Kevin.”

Clearly, Kevin knew my game. Or maybe Jason’s. I’d never thought he could be the type to seduce his students. As far as I knew, this class was his first teaching job.

“How did you get in here?” Jason changed the subject. “Fake ID?”

Busted. “No one carded us.”

“Doesn’t make you legal.”

“Are you going to call the police? Have us arrested and handcuffed?” It might have been the vodka, but I decided to be bold and push him. “Are you into handcuffs, Professor?”

Jason choked on his beer, coughing to clear his throat.

After making sure his friend wasn’t dying, Kevin laughed. “This is more entertaining than I imagined a college dive bar could be.”

I focused my attention on the non-choking friend. “What brings you to Olympia, Kevin?”

“I’m in politics.”

Jason found his voice again. “He’s an assistant to an assistant to a state senator.”

“Then you know all about impropriety.” I gave him a sweet smile.

“It’s been a political tradition since the Founding Fathers.” Kevin raised his glass. “I like you. Care to join us?”

Jason set his beer on the table. “I can’t be seen drinking with students. Kevin, shut up.” He pointed at me. “You return to your booth and your friends, and we’ll pretend we never ran into each other.”

“Yes, sir.” I saluted him. “Can I ask one question first?”

“If he doesn’t answer, I will.” Kevin gave me a wicked grin like a wolf in beige clothing.

Michel’s Review

We Were Here by Daisy Prescott is a delightful story that takes readers back to the beginning.  Seven young people beginning their lives as adults.  These kids head off to college with big dreams.  It’s their chance to finally make choices for themselves and live by their own rules.  There’s a bit of fear and excitement.

Readers have met some of these characters in Geoducks Are For Lovers or in the Modern Love Story series.  It’s not necessary to read any of those books before reading We Were Here.  This is the perfect book to start.

Daisy captured the joy of youth and the lifetime bonds of friendship that were forged.  We Were Here was a fun, delightful book that will leave the reader with a big smile.  It triggered  memories of years gone by that shaped the people they are today.

Tracey’s Review

Stuart Knight and Mariska Heron have gone through a lot to get to where they are now. Having finally overcome the obstacles standing in their way, the life ahead of them should be smooth, problem-free, and nothing short of joyful. Life, though, doesn’t always go as planned, and getting to their happily ever after will prove more challenging than either of them could have imagined.

After getting the first part of Stuart’s and Mariska’s story in ONE TO LEAVE, I was excited to see this special couple get the future that seemed set in stone. Part of the beauty of meeting and falling in love with characters is seeing them down the road, finding out what’s gone on for them, and, hopefully, seeing them with the hoped-for resolution. But life is not so tidy, and so it is a nice change to see book characters deal with bumps in the road that, we hope, make them stronger in the end. And so it is with Stuart and Mariska. There is, of course, no shortage of happiness, of steamy times, of humor for them in ONE TO TAKE. But I was not expecting the things that they find themselves dealing with, and found myself crying right along with them as they experienced them.

I love that Tia Louise continues to imbue her stories with the mystical, the magical side of life, that the greater world never sees. Mariska is a special character, and it’s the mystical qualities that make up such a large part of who she is that make her so. These qualities, along with pure unfettered, unconditional love, are also what reaffirm her faith, when life and the unexpected take their toll.

For his part, Stuart is one of my favorite of Tia’s men. Oh, the things he’s dealt with. He’s found, through the love of family, a very special woman, and the place that calls to him, exactly who and where he needs to be. I thought that Tia did a great job of showing his further growth in this book, and, if possible, I love him even more.

As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Seeing the rest of the gang from the series, Stuart’s family, even memories of Mariska’s Yaya, made this a very special read. ONE TO TAKE is an easy 4.5 stars for me, and I highly recommend both this book, and the series.

But is he nimble enough to handle the woman he never saw coming? Or will she leave him with a matching scar across his heart?

Featuring scorching hot chemistry and plenty of sass, Dirty Ride is sure to rev your engine and get you immediately hooked!

4.5 Star

Michel’s Review

It’s no secret that the Wind Dragons MC Series by Chantal Fernando is one that I really like and have invested my time in.  The Wind Dragons MC’s characters have come to life in the previous books.  Each of the club’s members have a story lurking behind their membership in the Wind Dragons MC.  Each one contributes something different to the club.  Their unity and brotherhood may be a little ruthless, a little lawless, but no less dedicated as soldiers in arms.  Dirty Ride features the mysterious member known as Irish.

Irish is known as a ladies man but when he sets sights on a reclusive redhead in a bar things are going to change.  Valentina has good reasons for being reclusive.  She has escaped an abusive relationship and is determined to start over in a new town.

Irish is determined to win Valentina’s heart.  He wants to do it right.  He wants to date her, woo her, and show her the man he is on the inside.  He wants to build a relationship built on trust and respect.  He wants her as his old lady.

Valentina’s past is chasing her down.  Can Irish and the Wind Dragon’s protect her from an abusive ex that has the power to destroy them all?

Read the book to get the whole story!

Although Dirty Ride is novella and on the shorter side, the reader never gets the feeling that this is short story.  This action packed novella gets right to the grit of the story and builds the momentum without having all the filler scenes that are often present in full length novels.  It keeps the reader captivated and invested in the book.  The romance, the tension, and the danger are present at all times. This novella never feels rushed or abbreviated.  It feels like a full length novel.

Chantal Fernando did a great job with the Dirty Ride novella.
