Tracey’s Review

Ever since being banished to the small town of Christmas, Colorado, by her conniving ex and his new love, Charlotte Bailey has wanted nothing more than to leave. Oh, sure, the town is lovely, and the people are great, but being the chief of staff of the small local hospital can’t hold a candle to the life she left behind in New York. It’s been a year, and Charlotte is more than ready to head back to the big city, and her promised job, but that darned ex is still up to no good, leaving her right where she doesn’t want to be. But the residents of Christmas have a few tricks up their sleeves to keep Charlotte where she’s most needed, and save their hospital at the same time.

I love a small-town romance, and, when it’s a holiday read to boot, color me happy. I’ve visited the lovely town of Christmas, CO, before, and really enjoyed it. Author Debbie Mason has created a place that is warm and inviting, with characters that are charming, quaint, and sometimes a little zany, and it’s a lot of fun to spend time there.

The spirit of Christmas gets me every time, and Charlotte doesn’t stand a chance when the citizens of her adopted town call in the big guns to convince her to stay, and to keep their hospital up and running. There’s romance, there’s intrigue, and there’s plenty of holiday magic to keep things lively, romantic, and heartwarming.

This little read was extremely enjoyable, and an easy 4 stars for me. I’m happy to add it to my list of holiday reads, and recommend it for fans of small-town romances or anyone looking for a feel-good holiday read.

Synopsis

Amalie Whitfield is the picture of a blushing bride during her wedding reception–but for all the wrong reasons. Instead of proclaiming his undying love, her husband can be heard, by Amalie and their guests, getting off with someone else. She has every reason to freak out, and in a moment of insanity, she throws herself at the first hot-blooded male she sees. But he’s not interested in becoming her revenge screw.

Mortified and desperate to escape the post-wedding drama, Amalie decides to go on her honeymoon alone, only to find the man who rejected her also heading to the same tiny island for work. But this time he isn’t holding back. She should know better than to sleep with someone she knows, but she can’t seem to resist him.

They might agree that what happens on the island should stay on the island, but neither one can deny that their attraction is more than just physical.

Filled with hilariously scandalous situations and enough sexual chemistry to power an airplane from New York City to the South Pacific, Hooking Up is the next standalone, laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Helena Hunting, the New York Times bestselling author of the Pucked series and Shacking Up.

Michel’s Review

Once again Helena Hunting has created a laugh out loud romance that leaves the reader swooning with a case of the warm and fuzzies after reading  Hooking Up.

Hooking Up is the sequel to Shacking Up but features another couple who were determined to get their happily ever after.  The problem was that they were not meant to get their happily ever after together.  It all begins with the perfect wedding which ends up opening up the divorce court doors within minutes of saying I do.  One jilted bride determined to prove she’s sexy ends up molesting the groom’s cousin.  The groom’s cousin doesn’t mind helping the bride out but knows the wedding reception is the wrong time and wrong place.  The honeymoon is another story.  The only problem with the whole scenario is the groom who refuses to sign the divorce papers.  What happens next? Read the book and be ready to roll with laughter.

Helena Hunting has another fantastic book to add to her outstanding book list.

Latest Release + Review: Ripples by Aleatha Romig

You don’t have to read the Consequences series to enjoy this stand-alone novel, but if you know Tony Rawlings, you know that disappointing him isn’t an option. Imagine being his youngest daughter…imagine telling him the unimaginable…

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.”

Sometimes ideas find you, and dreams begin as nightmares. Sometimes the truth that has been kept hidden is the key to opening a door you never knew existed.

“You might not know me. I’m the baby of the Rawlings family, the princess, the daughter who came along later. I’m not like my older siblings, successful at everything they touch. My mother and father have provided me with every luxury as well as their unyielding love and support, but I’m not spoiled. I’m also not content. By example, my parents have shown me how love should be. I don’t know their past, and that doesn’t matter. I know what I’ve seen—two people devoted to one another.

I don’t believe that I’ll ever find that kind of love, the kind that forgives and accepts all. And as my life falls to pieces and I travel to visit my family to face their disappointment, I’m not even looking for it.

I’m looking for an escape…from my life as a Rawlings…from the pressure to achieve and not let others down. I dream of the time I can live for my own desires without the expectations that come with my name.

I don’t find what I’m seeking…it finds me. Or should I say…he finds me.

This time is different. I have a family who will search for me and find the answers. Little do we know—any of us—that my father set my journey into motion long before I was born.”

“Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” ~Dalai Lama

Ripples (Unabridged Version) is Natalie’s story, the youngest of Tony and Claire’s children—their baby. This story first appeared in shorter form in Glamour: Contemporary Fairytale Retellings. Due to the length restriction of each novella in that anthology, many scenes in Ripples were shortened or omitted for that anthology. This unabridged edition is the entire story—double in length and—a full-length novel.

Please enjoy this Consequences novel along with special appearances from your favorite Consequences characters.

Robin’s Review

Author Aleatha Romig is probably known best for her dark and mysterious Consequences series and is now revisiting her beloved Consequences characters in a new standalone novel titled Ripples. According to Romig, Ripples appeared in a shorter format in the anthology titled Glamour: Contemporary Fairytale Retellings. Romig either omitted or shortened many scenes of Ripples so it could be included in the anthology, but she is now releasing Ripples in its full-length novel format. Readers who have never read the Consequences series are now able to sample a bit of the series in this spinoff novel!

Ripples focuses on Natalie Rawlings, the youngest daughter of Anthony (Tony) Rawlings and Claire Nichols Rawlings. As the novel begins, Natalie struggles with how to tell her parents that she has failed out of Harvard. She lacks the drive for business that her two siblings inherited from their father and longs for something different – freedom from the expectations and restraints of being the daughter of wealthy and highly successful businessman Tony Rawlings. While traveling overseas for the Christmas holiday, Natalie finds the freedom she’s been searching for in a man named Dexter Smithers, her escape nothing she could have possibly imagined.

Although Natalie and Dexter are brand-new Romig characters, I felt a dark sense of déjà vu while reading their story – strangely reminiscent of how I felt while reading Consequences. Let there be no doubt Romig takes readers to a dark place in this novel. I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach for many chapters of the novel, but as I continued reading, I began to grow more confused by my own feelings. Natalie experiences a tremendous amount of character development which caused me to feel conflicted. Ripples is definitely a love story, but not one in the traditional sense. If you love dark romance, this book might be perfect for you!

Aleatha Romig excels in crafting a mystery. For me, the most remarkable features of her writing are the attention she pays to detail and her uncanny ability to weave layers of clues throughout a book or series. I found myself extremely interested in the background of Dexter Smithers. How did he come to be in Natalie’s orbit? What are his connections to the Rawlings family? I truly enjoyed revisiting Tony and Claire Rawlings, meeting their adult children, and seeing how their family has progressed since the days of the series. I have always been very fond of Phil Roach, so I was excited to see that he and his wife, Taylor, play a huge role in Ripples!

Romig begins her book with an ominous quote from Dalai Lama, “Just as ripples spread out when a single pebble is dropped into the water, the actions of individuals can have far-reaching effects.” For me, this quote is very telling. Readers of the Consequences series will understand EXACTLY what Romig is trying to convey. If you read Ripples, you are about to embark on an adventure. Although Ripples is written in the format of a standalone novel, Romig left Dexter and Natalie’s story wide open. Overall, Ripples is a solid 4-star novel, and I sincerely hope Aleatha Romig decides to give us more of their story!

Release Blitz + Excerpt + Giveaway + Review: Can’t Miss Christmas by Liasson

When a children’s book author’s only chance to get home for Christmas lies in a road trip with her sexy ex-husband anything can happen, naughty or nice. Unwrap this Christmas novella from Amazon best-selling author Miranda Liasson, CAN’T MISS CHRISTMAS…

About CAN’T MISS CHRISTMAS

Finding love again is the best Christmas present of all.

It’s two days before Christmas and bestselling children’s author Grace Alberts needs to fulfill a promise—to make it to a book signing for the kids at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, the place that did so much for her during a very rough time. But the weather’s getting awful and all flights are cancelled out of Boston, where she’s wrapping up her book tour. Then in walks her annoying but extremely sexy ex-husband, who (as usual) thinks he’s got all the answers.

Graham Walker just stopped by to get a book signed for Grace’s biggest fan, his niece, and wish Grace a Merry Christmas—why not? But he soon finds himself troubleshooting her dilemma. He’s got a Range Rover that can plow through a hundred-year Nor’easter. He’s even headed home to Philly. Trouble is, Grace’s and his past is a disaster, something he has no intention of reliving while driving through a winter storm, no matter how much he once loved her. And maybe still does.

Bad weather has a way of bringing out the best and the worst in people, and when a run in with some deer antlers leads them to a forced stop in Mirror Lake, Connecticut, anything can happen, naughty or nice. Maybe a bit of enforced alone time and some Christmas magic can be just what it takes for them to face their past—and each other—once and for all.

Excerpt:

Somehow, Grace managed to pass Graham and get in the bathroom, where she used the time to try to calm the hell down. If she didn’t come up with an excuse to leave this room, something combustible was going to happen between them. She had to get out while she still had all her wits about her.

When she’d finally got her breathing under control, she left the bathroom, walked toward her suitcase, and stubbed her toe on the bed.

She let out a curse and hopped around a little, imagining what she must look like with her bedhead hair, red plaid flannel, and Christmas socks. Very sexy. Unlike the delicious, muscular god walking toward her.

She tried to use the pain to distract herself from how her mouth had suddenly gone dry and her knees felt as wobbly as a one-year-old’s, but it wasn’t really working. Worse, Graham stepped a little closer.

She splayed out her arms, warning him back. All that lean muscle, all that raw, masculine heat—it could not come near her. She would throw herself at him, smooth her hands over all that hard, bountiful muscle, and beg for things. Her body could not be trusted. “I’m fine. Really. Just stubbed my toe.”

“Want me to take a look?”

His gaze was torching her, like paper in a fire that turns immediately to ash and blows away.

The fact that he was now inches away with his lips quirked into the slightest smile told her he didn’t heed her warning, or give a damn about it. And oh, she did not want him to. He was so close now, she could smell the soap from his shower, see the little beads of water on his shoulders. His fingers gripped her elbow, and she swore it tingled from his touch. Other parts of her were sort of on fire too. So not good. “Let’s see it,” he said, the smile morphing into a wicked grin.

“Graham, I’m fine.” She tried to shrug away. He dropped his hand, but still she felt pinned in place, unable to move or even breathe. Electricity buzzed and snapped between them. She didn’t want him to see how much he affected her, yet she was helpless with him so near.

His gaze homed in on her lips. He was going to…yes, he was. Kiss her. Her heartbeat thrummed in her throat, and every muscle froze in anticipation.

She wanted it. Wanted him. So, so badly.

Graham lowered his mouth. The dip of his head was so familiar, yet it made every nerve stand on end. At last, their lips met. His were soft and pliant, and they brushed against hers, carefully and slowly. Her hand was trembling as she wrapped it around his neck and pulled him toward her until their bodies were flush, fitting together like they were always meant to.

That simple move blew careful and slow right out of the water. His mouth crushed hers, devouring her with deep, sensual kisses. His tongue slid inside her mouth, and she met it with equal vigor, desire roaring and crashing between them, unleashed like a storm surge, uncontrollable and insatiable.

Suddenly, Graham pulled back, out of breath. He cradled her face in his hands and looked at her tenderly. “I missed you,” he said. “I missed this.”

Tracey’s Review

Sometimes love just isn’t enough, as Grace Alberts and Graham Walker found. Sometimes tragedy is more than two people can withstand, and, even deep feelings just won’t hold things together. Although they’ve gone their separate ways, finding themselves in the same place at Christmas opens up all sorts of old feelings. Maybe it’s that Christmas magic…

Second-chance love and a holiday read?! Sign me up! As an unapologetic fan of both Christmas and finding love a second time, CAN’T MISS CHRISTMAS by author Miranda Liasson hit all the marks, and did not disappoint.

Graham and Grace are charming and quirky, and obviously still harbor lasting feelings for each other. Their relationship moves pretty smoothly back into comfortable territory, and once they find themselves riding out a pre-Christmas storm in Mirror Lake, Connecticut, they’ve got nothing but time to figure out just how comfortable. The residents of Mirror Lake are wonderfully unique, and accept the visitors as part of their town with no ceremony whatsoever, and make it really easy for the town and Christmas to work their magic.

CAN’T MISS CHRISTMAS is a novella in Miranda’s Mirror Lake series, but even though I had not read the previous books, I fell right into the story. I thoroughly enjoyed the story, which kicks off my annual holiday romance fest, and happily recommend it for fans of holiday reads. Bonus, I also got to meet some folks that I’d like to go back and visit very soon.

In a standalone hockey romance that tugs at readers’ heartstrings, a broken ex-pro learns to live and love again—all thanks to the complicated, wonderful nurse who gives him a second chance.

Luke Daniels, former forward for the NHL’s Charlotte Aviators, has spent close to a year rehabbing a career-threatening injury—and distracting himself however he can. What’s more, Bree’s the only person who makes him excited about life again.

Despite her initial reservations, Luke can’t help pursuing sweet, beautiful Bree. Then he realizes it was her brother whose career he ended with an accidental hit, and he falls back on the thing that’s always helped suppress his demons: alcohol. Michel’s Review

Breakaway by Sophia Henry is the fifth book in the Pilots Hockey Series. Breakaway has a very different tone and vibe than the previous books in the series and this may be why this book is getting mixed reactions from the fans of this series.  If you are looking for a book that is hockey related but want more of the action off the ice away from the game, this is the book you want to pick up.  This is a book about second chances, redemption, hope, love, and life after hockey.  Each character is dealing with their own let downs and problems in life, a small part of it is due to their worlds coincidentally colliding one moment in time. The other part is what happens after all the pieces are broken and in need of repair.

Reading the synopsis gives the reader a good idea the direction this novel is going.  It’s what happens after that brings Bree and Luke true happiness in life. It’s learning to accept what you can’t control, learning to walk away when all avenues are exhausted, learning to forgive others as well as forgiving oneself, and finally learning that life has so much more to offer when you open your heart.

Breakaway is loaded with emotional angst as well as sexy romance.  Although I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the previous books in the series, I liked it a lot better once I took the time to digest the real message within the story.  I would recommend this book to new readers as well as fans of this series.  Sophia Henry took the Pilots Hockey Series beyond the ice.

New Release + Review : Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry

Temporary

By Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry

Buy: Amazon / B & N / IBooks / Kobo

Synopsis

The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen is the same one who can ruin everything.

The first time I lay eyes on Callan Walker, I know he’ll be trouble. With his smug grin, hot Aussie accent and thousand dollar shoes, he’s just the kind of rich guy who always gets what he wants.

And he wants two things: a night of sin, and my cooperation as he outmaneuvers his powerful mother to take control of his uncle’s estate.

I can’t afford either one. I’m the only thing standing between my little sister and the foster care system. He may have money and charm on his side, but I have something even more powerful — pure desperation. This temp job at his mother’s company can become a full time job for me. It has to.

But when Callan’s eyes rake over my body, sometimes I forget my obligations. His piercing gaze finds the fun, optimistic girl I used to be and not the tired person I’ve become.

And it works–if only for a moment. Our night together was a mistake. I can’t afford to get sucked into his high-powered family’s treachery. But the closer I get to Callan, the more layers I find beneath those expensive clothes. Though I can’t forget this is temporary. He’s temporary. I have too much to lose.

Too bad my foolish heart didn’t get the memo…

Michel’s Review

It always amazes me when two authors team up to write a book.  It can either be a disaster with two very different voices or it can be a flawless, entertaining story that makes it impossible to figure out which author wrote what.  Temporary by Sarina Bowen and Sarah Mayberry delivered a flawless, swoon worthy romance. Their first collaboration is a must read.

Grace has been working for a temp agency hoping to land a permanent job.  She needs to find a permanent job with a steady income.  Living in New York City is hard enough as a young woman but add the responsibility of raising a younger sister and it becomes even harder.  When a great temp job comes up that offers the possibilities of a permanent job, Grace jumps at the opportunity.  She just needs a chance to prove herself and show her outstanding work ethics.

Grace lands a temporary job at Walker Holdings.  The CEO of Walker Holdings has assigned her to audit the estate of her late brother Jack.  When Grace arrives at the estate she meets Callan Walker, Jack’s nephew.  Callan is a distraction with a sexy Australian accent that she doesn’t need while doing her job.  The more she’s around him the more resistible he is.

Their time together turns into more than a distraction.  Their chemistry is intense but can it withstand their real everyday lives.  Callan’s family interference and Grace’s need for a permanent job may make this once in a lifetime love a temporary romance.

Sarina and Sarah did a stellar job and I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

*****

Sarah Mayberry was born in Melbourne, Australia, and is the middle of three children. From the time that she first “stole” paper from kindergarten and stapled it together to make “books,” Sarah has always wanted to be a writer. In line with this ambition, on graduation from high school she completed a bachelor of arts degree majoring in professional writing, then sat down to write a book. When inspiration didn’t strike, she began to wonder if, perhaps, she needed to live some life first before writing about it.

This still left the burning question of how to pay the rent. She found her way into trade journalism, working off the principle that it was better to write anything for a living than nothing at all. Her time there lead to the opportunity to launch a new decorator magazine for one of Australia’s major retailers, an invaluable and grueling experience that she found very rewarding.

But the opportunity to write fiction for a living soon lured Sarah away. She took up a post as storyliner on Australia’s longest running soap, Neighbours. Over two years she helped plot more than 240 hours of television, as well as writing freelance scripts. She remembers her time with the show very fondly — especially the dirty jokes and laughter around the story table — and still writes scripts on a freelance basis.

In 2003 she relocated to New Zealand for her partner’s work. There Sarah served as storyliner and story editor on the country’s top-rating drama, Shortland Street, before quitting to pursue writing full time.

Sarah picked up a love of romance novels from both her grandmothers, and has submitted manuscripts to Harlequin many times over the years. She credits the invaluable story structuring experience she learned on Neighbours as the key to her eventual success — along with the patience of her fantastic editor, Wanda.

Sarah is revoltingly happy with her partner of twelve years, Chris, who is a talented scriptwriter. Not only does he offer fantastic advice and solutions to writing problems, but he’s also handsome, funny and sexy. When she’s not gushing over him, she loves to read romance and fantasy novels, go to the movies, sew and cook for her friends. She has also become a recent convert to Pilates, which she knows she should do more often.

New Release + Excerpt + Review: Gray Matter by Becky McGraw

Gray Matter: Deep Six Security, Book 5 by Becky McGraw

Date of Publication: August 28, 2022

Blurb

Can Gray help his new office manager clean her dirty laundry? Or will the mafia princess hang him out to dry?

Since leaving the FBI Grayson Jennings has found peace in his life with his job as a forensic accountant with Deep Six Security and he treasures it. It remains that way until Michaela Girabaldi is hired as the new office manager for their east coast office.

The smart-mouthed Jersey girl strolls into the office in red high heels with her bags packed with enough dirty laundry to last them both a lifetime. In Prison. Her dirtiest laundry is the 1.2 million dollars she insists she didn’t steal from the mob and Gray is wrangled into helping her find it.

Well, this was not Gray’s first rodeo with a beautiful criminal and he had the bruises to prove it. He was not going to blindly trust a woman ever again, especially one suspected of murder and many other nasty crimes. He would help her, but he wouldn’t be getting into bed with the mafia princess or falling for her or her games.

Mickie says only her cousin knows where the loot is located, so Gray sets out to find her. To do that, he’ll have to follow the money, but he is afraid at the end of that trail he’ll find a lot more than he bargained for.

But will he find the money before the mob finds Mickie? Or will she distract him with her Nonna’s Magic Massage Oil and cannolis at the beach house where they’re hiding out and get them both killed?

Gray stepped off the curb, but hopped back when a long, black limo with blacked out windows almost hit him.  The brake lights flickered as the driver slowed even more.

When the car finally passed him, he stepped off the curb and walked across the street.  He just couldn’t bear watching her walk inside that building.  Gray would find a place for her to stay tonight, and he’d make damned sure she had a place when she came back to town after her training.

“Michaela…” he said, dropping his hand on her shoulder.

She gasped and her body tensed.  Gray’s only warning was a clanking whoosh and a quick black flash before her handbag connected with the side of his head.  A gong-like sound echoed in his skull as he staggered back with stars dancing in his line of vision.

He slumped against the brick wall, holding his throbbing jaw as he ran his tongue over his teeth to make sure they were all still in place.

“Oh, God—I’m so sorry!” she screeched as she walked up to him.  “You scared me.”  Her look of horror turned to anger when their eyes met.  “But it’s your own fault for following me. Why are you following me?”

Gray wished he had an answer to that question himself.  “Why are you staying at a homeless shelter?” he shot back, rubbing his aching jaw.

“I’m not, I’m, ah—visiting a friend,” she replied, her cheeks flushing.

“The same friends you’re staying with?” he volleyed, knowing a lie when he heard one.

“What business is it of yours?” she demanded, putting her hand on her hip.

“It’s my business because I need to make sure you’re a good fit for our office.  Right now, considering your penchant for lying and assault, I’d say I have reason to be concerned.”

Her face fell, and her hazel eyes filled with angry tears.  “If having you in my business is a requirement of the job, then I don’t want it,” she replied, lifting her chin.

“But you need it,” he countered, pushing off of the dirty brick wall to take her arm.  He nodded his chin toward the shelter.  “Come back to the hotel with me and I’ll get you a room.  Is there anything you need to get from inside?”

Tracey’s Review

Oh, those Deep Six Security guys, you just have to love them. These are some bad*ss guys, and they get into more hot water than they can handle sometimes. Take Grayson Jennings, for example. He’s just trying to do his job, setting up the next office for the Deep Six folks, when he is blindsided by a very small, very feisty, very Italian whirlwind with plenty to hide.

Michaela ‘Mickie’ Girabaldi has definitely found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time. On the run from some very bad men, Mickie’s just looking for a way to stay alive. When her search brings her to the offices of Deep Six Security, and a second meeting with Gray Jennings, she’s less than thrilled.

I love this series, and Becky McGraw might have just written my favorite of them yet with GRAY MATTER. While there is plenty of the usual suspense, I found myself laughing out loud at the banter between Gray and Mickie. Clearly, neither one was ready for what they’d gotten themselves into, and there is plenty of humor, as well as scenes so steamy that a fan and a cool drink are nice to have on hand.

Having all of the usual suspects on hand to keep things jumping was a pleasure, and meeting Mickie’s brother, Dante, seems like a great lead-in for another book that Becky needs to give us. All in all, GRAY MATTER is 4 action-packed, sexy, laugh until you cry stars, and a definite must-read for fans of the Deep Six books.

Title: Wild Ride Cowboy

Author: Maisey Yates

Publisher: Harlequin

Release Date: August 29, 2017

Series: Copper Ridge #9

Genre: Contemporary Romance

ISBN: 9780373803644

He’s come back to Copper Ridge, Oregon, to keep a promise—even if it means losing his heart…

Putting down roots in Copper Ridge was never Alex Donnelly’s intention. But if there’s one thing the ex-military man knows, it’s that life rarely unfolds as expected. If it did, his best friend and brother-in-arms would still be alive. And Alex wouldn’t have inherited a ranch or responsibility for his late comrade’s sister—a woman who, despite her inexperience, can bring tough-as-iron Alex to his knees.

Clara Campbell didn’t ask for a hero to ride in and fix her ranch and her life. All she wants is the one thing stubborn, honorable Alex is reluctant to give: a chance to explore their intense chemistry. But Clara has a few lessons to teach him, too…about trusting his heart and his instincts, and letting love take him on the wildest adventure of all.

Excerpt:

Reluctantly, she covered the coffee with a white to-go lid then turned to walk out the door. She didn’t make it very far, though, because she ran right into a brick wall.

Well, it wasn’t really a brick wall. It just felt like one. Large, hard and uncompromising. But breathing. Which brick walls definitely didn’t do.

“Clara Campbell. Fancy meeting you here.”

Clara blinked and stared up into Alex Donnelly’s forest-green eyes and felt a strange response that seemed to originate in her stomach and travel upward to her chest, where it twisted, hard and sharp.

After looking at Asher, his understated physique and much softer brown gaze, the sight of Alex was jarring. Too intense. Too masculine. Too a lot of things.

His dark hair wasn’t military short anymore. It was long enough to hang into his face. He pushed it back off his forehead and again, something twisted, low and deep inside of her.

And then it wasn’t only his features that seemed too sharp. It was seeing him at all. She had been studiously avoiding him ever since he had moved back to Copper Ridge. If ever she’d caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of her eye, she’d gone the other way.

The last time she’d seen him up close had been at Jason’s funeral.

Pain washed through her, canceling out all of the good Asher feelings from only a moment before.

No wonder she’d had such a strong, immediate response to the sight of Alex. The man was dragging a bunch of her baggage in with him. Another thing she liked about Asher. He was separate from her life. From her pain.

Alex was all wound up in it.

“Hi, Alex,” she said, clutching her coffee cup tight, the warmth bleeding through to her palms. Which she was grateful for at the moment since her stomach had gone ice-cold at the sight of him.

“I’ve been meaning to stop by,” he said.

“That’s really okay,” she said, and she meant it. More than okay. Jason’s death meant that she was alone. Both of her parents were already gone. They’d had children later in life, and when her mother had gotten sick, her father had done everything he could to make his wife comfortable as her health declined. She’d died when Clara was twelve. And there had been no amount of preparation that could soften the blow. No amount of expectedness that could have made it feel less like a giant, ugly hand had reached into their life and wrenched the beauty out of it, leaving nothing but a dark abyss.

Tracey’s Review

Paying a visit author Maisey Yates’ Copper Ridge, Oregon, always feels a bit like coming home. Tight-knit community, the feel of small-town living, the beauty of the Pacific Northwest, all work so beautifully when brought together in Maisey’s books. I’d been looking forward to getting Alex Donnelly’s story in WILD RIDE COWBOY, and loved every bit of this book.

Maisey does an excellent job of crafting characters with multiple layers, of people just like the rest of us that have much more going on than meets the eye. Both Alex and Clara are moving through life projecting an image that hides so much of what makes up the real them. Maybe it’s something about Copper Ridge, maybe it’s becoming part of something bigger than themselves, of having the opportunity to move beyond the exterior that people have come to expect. No matter the reason, both of these beautifully broken people bloom and flourish under the care and keeping of each other and those around them, and I just adored the unfolding of their story.

WILD RIDE COWBOY has all of the hallmarks of the other books in the Copper Ridge series. Angst, heat, scenes sexy enough to bring both a blush and an ‘oh, my,’ and humor aplenty. I figure that, if an author can make me laugh, cry, and fan myself in the course of one read, it’s a good one, and Maisey has done an excellent job of all of these.

WILD RIDE COWBOY is another win for me, and an easy 4 absolutely enjoyable stars. I can’t get enough of these characters, and am looking forward to getting the lowdown on the backstory between Clara’s friend Sabrina and Liam Donnelly in CHRISTMASTIME COWBOY. If you haven’t met good folks of Copper Ridge, you’re missing out. Do yourself a favor and read these books; they’re a trip you’ll be glad that you took.

Excerpt

Dorothea Mathis studied the last room on her cleanup schedule and groaned. The bed had been wrecked, the comforter and pillows tossed haphazardly on the floor. A pair of panties hung from a bedpost. The TV remote had been busted, the pieces scattered across the nightstand. Wet towels created a path to the bathroom door, and the trash can…

Oh, gag me! The trash can contained used condoms.

The place needed to be decontaminated by people wearing hazmat suits.

Am I up to date on my vaccinations?

With a sigh, Dorothea anchored earbuds in place, keyed up her iPod and donned a pair of latex gloves. One—germs. Gross! Two—she was protective of the green nail polish she’d applied only that morning.

She selected color based on mood. Green = irritated.

Somehow she’d known today would suck balls.

Her mom must have checked in Mr. and Ms. Pigsty last night after Dorothea had gone to bed. Since she had a 4:00 a.m. wake-up call, she tended to hit the sack by 9:00 p.m. Granny hours, her sister, Holly, liked to tell her.

Dorothea picked up the dirty towels, removed the panties from the post, emptied the trash, changed the sheets on the bed, straightened the pillows and covers, and tossed the remote remains, planning to bill the Pigstys for a new one.

Time was limited this morning. She’d promised to drive her mother into the city in— Crap! Less than an hour. She rushed through dusting and began vacuuming. As the machine swallowed dirt and debris, she tried not to envy her mother. Carol would soon be enjoying her fourth “singles retreat” of the year. Her fourth, but certainly not her last. She stayed at the Michaelson, a five-star hotel owned by the richest guy in Strawberry Valley, Dane Michaelson. Dane was married to a local girl Dorothea had gone to school with, and he allowed Carol to stay free of charge. No doubt about it, she took full advantage, attending speed-dating sessions, mixers and a plethora of themed parties.

Her busy love life was just one of the many reasons she’d given the Strawberry Inn to Dorothea.

The wheels on her cart suddenly squeaked, the sound louder than her music. Yanking out the earbuds, she spun.

Surprise expelled the air from her lungs, leaving her gasping. This so wasn’t happening right now.

It couldn’t be happening.

Nightmares didn’t really come to life. Nor did pornos. Not that she watched those…very often. But dang it, this had to be one or the other.

The sexiest man on the planet had just stridden into the room. He was shirtless, sweat glistening on his eight pack—and his name was Daniel Porter.

The Daniel. The childhood crush she’d never forgotten. The first boy to break her already fragile heart.

She gulped. What was he doing here?

Wait. Like she really needed to ponder this one. Welcome back, Mr. Pigsty.

Her hands trembled as she yanked the vacuum cord from the electrical socket, the room descending into silence as the engine died.

I think you’re perfect just the way you are.

She smoothed her trembling hands down her “uniform,” a pair of blue scrubs that could take a licking and keep on ticking. “Uh, hi. Hello.” Oh, wow. Could she be any lamer? Definitely in a nightmare, not a porno. “Welcome back.”

He pulled the earbuds from his ears and gifted her with a small smile that failed to hide the lines of strain around his mouth. “Sorry about the mess. I planned to clean up before I checked out.” His gaze darted throughout the room, and he cringed. “I also plan to pay for the remote.”

What kind of sexual acrobatics had placed the poor remote in harm’s path, anyway?

Oh, my stars. A warm flush poured over Dorothea, threatening to overheat her. She almost fanned her cheeks for relief, barely stopped herself.

Look away! She tried, she really did, but Daniel was just so freaking beautiful. He was even taller now, and stronger, with a rough, tough face. His cheekbones were sharp, and his nose boasted a small notch in the center. Been broken a time or two? Dark stubble dusted his angular jaw, though the shadows couldn’t disguise the fine tracery of scars on his left cheek.

He was a modern-day warrior—literally. After high school, he’d joined the army, defending the country he loved.

This wasn’t the first time Dorothea had seen him since his return to town a few months ago, but her body reacted as if she’d never seen any man, heating and tingling in all the naughtiest places.

Act naturally. He’s just a customer.

A customer who’d wrecked a room during his most recent stay, but whatever. He was waiting for her to respond to his offer.

Let’s do this. “Yes, thank you. Payment would be appreciated.” She wound the vacuum cord around her arm, her motions clipped. “As for the room, I just need to tidy the bathroom, and I’ll be done.”

With his back to her, he stuffed his toiletries into an overnight bag. “I’ll get out of your way, then.”

During his senior year of high school, he hadn’t just slept with Madison Clark; he’d slept with a string of beautiful, popular girls, as if banging-and-bailing had finally been dubbed a national sport.

Good thing Dorothea hadn’t pursued him. He would have taken all her firsts and discarded her like garbage.

Instead, Jazz Connors had taken all her firsts and discarded her like garbage.

Anger boiled her blood until bitterness swept in, leaving a glaze of frost. Fire and ice. This wasn’t the first time they’d battled it out, and this wouldn’t be the last. The biggest downside? They ensured the wounds inside her hollowed-out chest never really had a chance to heal.

After graduation, she’d moved to the big bad city, enrolled in the University of Oklahoma’s meteorology program, met Jazz and gotten hitched, just as she’d always dreamed…only to return home several years later with a divorce and no degree.

A washed-up has-been by the age of twenty-four.

Michel’s Review

Gena Showalter takes us back to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma in her latest release Can’t Hardly Breath.

Daniel Porter is back in town to take care of his father.  Rather than staying with his father he’s chosen to stay at the inn.  His father has been pushing him to get married and settle down. That is the last thing Daniel wants.  Staying at the inn means he can have his one night stands without getting his father’s hopes up.  Daniel has also made it a rule not to fool around with any of the women from Strawberry Valley.  He’s following his rules until Dorthea Mathis shows up at his room wearing nothing but a raincoat and a promise of one night of pleasure.  Rather than succumbing to her beauty he turns her away.  Rather than seeing this as a compliment, it hurts Dorthea once again.

Dorothea was the girl everyone bullied in high school.  Daniel Porter is the only person who ever defended her and became her life long crush.  As an adult with a failed marriage and dreams crushed, she finds herself working back at her family’s inn with a hopeless future.  Her mother has retired and her younger sister hates her.  The inn is struggling and needs an infusion.  Allowing herself one moment of pleasure seems to be a good idea until Daniel rejects her offer.

Now Daniel regrets his rejection and is determined to win Dorthea over.

One thing Dorthea has learned over the years is to no longer be a pushover for any man again.  She is going to make Daniel work overtime to win her heart.

Daniel has his own demons that haunt him.  After serving in the military for years, he’s doesn’t want his demons to taint others.  Thus he becomes the love them and leave them type of guy.  He didn’t count on Dorthea soothing his tortured soul.  He didn’t count on her stealing his heart.

Gena Showalter once again delivered a fun, sexy, mature romance that encompassed the charm of a small town romance. The chemistry between Dorthea and Daniel was sizzling hot.  Their comedic banter had me rolling with laughter and swooning at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  I can’t wait to see what comes next in this series.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Publication Date: August 28th

Rule #1: No hot guys.

It might sound ridiculous. I get it. It kind of is, but college was supposed to be my sanctuary. It was my place to start over. The rumors, the whispers, and the jealousy I endured through high school would all be gone.

No one would know me at college.

Rule #2: No drama.

I’d major in pre-law. I’d make a few loyal friends. Everything would be easy breezy. No one was going to use me or hurt me. I wouldn’t let them.

Rule #3: New year. New place. New me.

Right?

Wrong.

And all because of Shay Coleman.

Football captain and quarterback, he was the big guy on campus. The cocky guy in my political science class with a smirk. I hated him on sight . . .

. . . and he was about to break all my rules.

Excerpt:

I was almost grinning from delight as I shoved open the back door. If I hit him, hey, all was fair in the war we were fighting of who could piss each other off the best.

It didn’t.

He was leaning against the wall, the back of his head resting on the brick, and he looked over to smirk at me. “I want to see your room.”

I thrust my hand out. “I’ll take those notes.”

That smirk just widened. He patted his bag and pushed off from the wall. “They’re in my email. I need to get on a computer.” He patted my arm and moved past me, heading inside. “I can use yours.”

“Hey!” I followed him in.

He was looking up the stairs. “Sabrina said you were on the fourth floor. You saw my place. I want to see yours. It’s only fair.”

He wasn’t waiting for my go-ahead. He was already up and rounding second floor to third. He’d be at my floor before I could get there. “Stop! I am not okay with this.”

He was at the third-floor door. He glanced down with that same goddamn smirk. “Better tell me which room or I’m going to hang out in the hallway.”

“Why are you always smirking? Is it permanently attached to your face?”

“What room, Clarke?” He was at my hallway door.

Fucking hell. I gritted my teeth. “Wait. Just wait. My door automatically locks.”

He’d opened the door but let it shut. Waiting as I covered the last set of stairs, I refused to let him see me panting. I stood there, purposely holding my breath until he narrowed his eyes and cocked his head to the side. “Breathe, Clarke. You’re going to pass out.”

I almost burped out the small pocket of air I’d been holding. “I hate you so much.”

“Yeah, yeah.” He waved that off. “We get it. Eternal damnation in hell, the whole shebang. Whatever.” He nodded to the door. “Stop stalling. I want to see your room.”

I was picturing pitchforks and fire. Maybe that was the burning smell he mentioned. It was hell, and all the fire in there. I yanked the door, glaring as I did. “Was this Sabrina’s idea?”

“Nope. All mine.” He was right behind me. I could feel his breathing. “She refused to tell me your room number, said I had to call.”

My eyes widened at the thought of him coming up by himself, strolling down the hallway, and then knocking on my door. Good Lordy gracious. Too many would’ve seen him at my door. I would’ve been the talk of the dorm.

I shuddered, unlocked, and entered my room.

Michel’s Review

The timing for the release of Hate To Love You by Tijan is perfect with all the college students heading back to campus to start another new year.  Whether they are freshman or upper classmen, they are embarking on another exciting year that will become part of their life journey.

Kennedy Clarke is starting her freshman year at Dulane University.  She is starting school with very high expectations and well thought out strategic list to ensure her success in college.  Her list is very specific and outlined in direct detail.  Her reasonings are valid after her negative experiences in high school.  She is a girl with goals that she intends to keep.

First on the list is NO HOT GUYS.  A bit unrealistic considering the campus is full of them, which includes her older brother Gage. The difference is that she can choose not to engage with the enemy.  It seems doable until she gets to her Political Science class and is forced into group participation.  That includes participation with the star quarterback Shay Coleman, who is not the typical jock. She can handle the jock but she can’t handle the man behind the title.  The only thing she can do is become his secret friend. Because if people knew they were friends it would break rule number two.

Rule number two- NO DRAMA.  Completely unrealistic when in an all girls dorm and three girls who are determined to be her friend.  Two of these girls are determined to get the complete “college experience” which includes frat parties, football games, and late night pizza binges followed by ice cream induced comas.  These girls are bent on bringing rule number one into play.  And she’s still trying to keep her growing friendship with the star quarterback and her hotter than sin brother under wraps.  When the unthinkable happens, rule number one is once again broken.  They may need certain hot guys to help them against the other hot guys who were the reason this rule was put into place.

Rule number three – NEW YEAR. NEW PLACE. NEW ME.  This rule was completely workable and did work but it just didn’t work the way Kennedy imagined it would.

It all began in Political Science class and became a college experience Kennedy never imagined she would have.  The hot guy proved her theories wrong.  The drama in the new year and new place led her to the new me, a girl who became stronger, more determined, and with much more realistic goals.  Kennedy not only changed her major, she changed her life.

Tijan captured the “college experience” and so much more.  She gave all the characters a lifetime experience that was more educating than the lectures and textbooks could.  I hope there will be more from the gang at Dulane University.
