EXCERPT

Weston takes off his tie and begins unbuttoning his shirt. My eyes open a little wider. I watch every move. The way his fingers flip each button loose. The way his tanned and muscular chest flashes me as the shirt comes apart. That stupid Corporate grin on his face.

I sigh with frustration just as he takes the whole thing off and starts going for his belt.

Will Weston Conrad strip naked to swim?

Oh, yeah. You bet your ass he will. I called him Naked Man back when we were together. He has a thing for it.

“Come on, Tori. Let’s swim. You don’t need a suit. I’ve seen your goods.”

“First of all,” I say, crossing my arms and maintaining eye contact as the pants come down, “I’m not ‘goods.’ Second of all, I’m not giving you the pleasure of seeing me naked after you’ve been such an asshole.”

“When was I an asshole?”

He’s kidding, right? “All the time.”

“I’m just truthful, Victoria. You just can’t handle the truth.”

“I’m tired of fighting—” But I stop talking. Because yeah, he still looks amazing in those black boxer briefs he’s partial to.

“Did you miss him?” West asks.

“Who?” I say, forcing myself to look up at his face.

“Naked Man?”

I almost laugh, but catch myself just in time. “Weston—” But before I can get anything else out, he’s crossing the floor, I’m backing up, my hands are up, warning him to stay away, and I bump into the couch and fall back.

He stops in front of me, his goddamned bulge staring me in the face.

At least he’s not hard.

Ooops. Spoke too soon.

“Weston, stop it.”

“Come on,” he says, extending his hand. “We’re going to the beach.”

“I’m not getting naked with you.”

“I don’t need you naked. Your fucking skirt is so short you could wade in up to your thighs.” He shakes his hand at me, urging. “Come on.”

I close my eyes so I can stop staring at the bulge, stop imagining his hard cock and all the ways I’ve been intimate with it in the past, and take his hand, letting him pull me to my feet. His arm slips around my back and he pulls me into his chest. God, I can feel his fucking dick against my hips.

“Victoria,” he says in my ear. “You’ve missed me,” he says, switching to the other one.

I wait for what comes next. It’s a thing he always did with me when I was on the verge of something. Panic, or sadness, or whatever comes with all the things we went through.

He would stand behind me, both hands squeezing my shoulders. His mouth would go to work on my earlobe, and my neck, and my mouth. Then his fingers would dip down into my bra to squeeze my breasts and pinch my nipples.

We’d always have sex after that. Always. It drove me crazy.

But before I can say anything—No, we’re not doing that, or, Back off, mister, I’m not yours—he backs away and he’s heading for the door, tugging me along.

I sigh, missing his attention so much in that unused moment.

Michel’s Review

Mr. Corporate is the latest Mister on the chopping block.  Someone is trying to bring the Misters down once and for all.  Their lives have been anything but normal since the incident in college.  The incident that almost got them prosecuted for rape.  Each Mister has felt they were somewhat responsible for what happened many years ago.  They are unaware of how the other Misters are involved.  They were ordered not to talk about it with anyone, including with each other. Over ten years later they are being forced to confront the past to save their futures.

Each Mister holds an intricate piece to the puzzle.  Someone is trying to destroy their lives. This time the Misters have much more to lose.

Weston Conrad’s life didn’t change much after the incident.  He had an airtight alibi. His girlfriend was with him that night. He was able to move forward in life  and pursue his career as a head hunter.  He wasn’t able to hang onto his girlfriend.  Their on again off again relationship has finally reached it’s expiration date.

Weston was recruited to hire a high profile executive.  The finder fee is over seven million dollars.  He thought he had the client in the bag.  He didn’t count on his ruthless ex girlfriend vying for the same finder fee. Victoria will do anything to get this money, including lie, cheat, and steal.  What she didn’t consider is that her feelings for Weston would change the way she does business.

As the two compete and end up stranded on a remote island during a hurricane, their priorities change.  They are in survival mode.  It is also quite clear that someone has set them up.  Their lives are in even more danger than from the elements.  Someone wants them dead.

This is when Mr. Corporate’s past comes into play.

There are two Misters to go before the truth becomes unraveled. It will be interesting to see who’s controlling the strings and why.

J. A. Huss is weaving a brilliant tale with five books that build the story.  I love it.

Excerpt

Not gonna lie, watching my girl operate that car like a driving master was as exhilarating as it was hot. She drove for about thirty minutes before we wound up on some country ass back road, at which point I figured out she’d still been holding back. Once we were out on the open road, she drove like the car was an extension of her. As fast as she was going, I never once felt like I wasn’t safe or she wasn’t in total control. The faster she drove, the harder I got. Daisy was lightning in a goddamn bottle.

When we’d gone at least ten miles on the back road without seeing anything but trees and a few cows, I asked her to pull over. Even that she made into something wild, slamming on the brakes and executing a perfect three hundred and sixty degree turn before coming to a dead stop. She grinned over at me proudly before pulling over to the side of the road and putting the car in park.

“Nerves getting to you?” she teased.

I shook my head as I leaned over, cupped the back of her head and kissed her like a madman. We were all teeth and tongue, the kiss damn near brutal we were both so desperate. She pulled away just long enough to turn off the engine and unhook her seatbelt. As soon as she was finished, she went back to kissing me and started clawing at my jeans, rubbing her hand over my cock as I groaned into her mouth.

After a few desperate minutes of kissing me wildly, she ended it and took total control. I gave it up without a peep as she first unhooked my seatbelt and then unzipped my pants. When she got my cock out, she licked her lips before getting on her knees in her seat and bending over the console to take me in her mouth. The hot wet heat of the inside of her mouth was fucking everything.

It took some doing as far as maneuvering went, but I managed to get my arm out so I could grab the hem of her skirt to pull it up over her ass. She moaned around my dick as I slid my hand into her bikini panties.

I growled low in my throat as my fingers slid over her wet heat. The undeniable proof that my girl liked to suck cock was a serious turn on. I’d never realized how fuckin’ hot it would be to have a woman get off on having a mouth full of dick.

Her position over the console had to be uncomfortable but she didn’t seem to give one bit of a fuck. She slurped and sucked at my dick like it housed an elixir she desperately needed and her fingernails scraping gently over my balls made me want to fuck her into oblivion. As she was giving a blowjob for the ages I was busy rubbing her clit, loving how wet she was making my fingers. When she popped her head off my cock and sat up, I growled low in my throat.

“Get on my dick,” I ordered.

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a sexy new STANDALONE novel.

After getting dumped, the last thing I needed was to move next door to someone who reminded me of my ex-boyfriend, Elec.

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author’s note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Looking tense, he placed his hands slowly into his pockets as he looked at me. “What exactly happened last night?”

“What are you talking about?”

Nice try dodging the question.

He moved in closer to me. “What am I talking about? You leaving me with a giant fucking basket of muffins and running off before I could even say anything? Ring a bell?”

“I thought you’d be alone. It caught me off guard.”

His eyes softened. “You were upset…”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“You’re a terrible liar, Chelsea. Fucking horrible at it. You don’t hide your feelings very well.”

“You think you know just about everything there is to know about me, don’t you?”

“Not everything. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to read you. It’s one of the things I like about you, though. You’re one of the least fake people I’ve ever met.”

“Then, tell me. Why do you think I was upset?”

“Honestly? I think you’re confused about me.”

“Confused…”

“Yes. I think you’re wondering why I opted not to have dinner with you and instead ended up with a woman I’d literally just met, someone who isn’t as sweet as you and sure as fuck isn’t as pretty as you. So, you’re wondering what the hell I was thinking. Am I right?”

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

He continued, “I know we haven’t known each other for very long, but I do feel a connection with you, okay? If you’ve sensed something, you’re not imagining it.”

“Well, if I wasn’t confused before…now I definitely am.”

“I feel like I need to say this now, because I can’t stand the thought of you thinking that I somehow find you undesirable when it’s exactly the opposite.”

I crossed my arms. “Again. Not following you.”

He closed his eyes as if to try to find the right words. “It’s just that I know for sure that I can’t ever be what someone like you needs in a boyfriend, in a partner. It’s not that we wouldn’t have fun or be great together at first. I’m just not good for you in the long-term—not marriage material. And the reasons are too complex to get into, except to say that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with me. I can’t, in good conscience, start something with a girl like you.”

“A girl like me…”

“Yes. You’re not the kind of girl a guy takes home for a quick fuck. You’re the girl he keeps.”

Right. Just like Elec did.

NEIGHBOR DEAREST TEASER NEW RD

5Star+

Michel’s Review

I’ve quickly come to realize that anything by Penelope Ward is going to be an exceptional read.  I have loved her previous books and the novels she has co authored with Vi Keeland.  The one thing that keeps drawing me back for more is her creation of unforgettable characters and a love story that is not a cookie cutter romance.  A story that dances on the edge of the rules in romance 101 with the absolute no no’s.  She boldly adds taboo elements such as cheating boyfriends, sibling (step sibling) relationships, vindictive enemies, and douchebag personalities and makes the reader clearly see there are two sides to any story.  Things are not always as they appear on the surface and matters of the heart are a different story altogether.  Dearest Neighbor is the other side of the story briefly told in Stepbrother Dearest.  It turns the tables on our “beloved” Elec from Stepbrother Dearest.  The guy readers fell hopelessly in love with doesn’t look so great from other points of view.  And that’s okay because it’s time for a new hero, Damien Hennessey to takeover and dominate our hearts.  Only a writer like Penelope Ward could deliver up a new tasty dish making us forget about the delicious appetizer that came before hand.

Chelsea is still reeling from the devastating heartbreak that Elec delivered a year ago when he broke off their engagement to reunite with his stepsister.  She thought they had the perfect relationship.  She thought he loved her.  She can’t figure out what she did wrong that made him dump her for Greta.  She just can’t seem to get over him.

The first step in the process of getting over Elec is to move.  Second step is therapy.  Third step is to start dating again.

When she meets her new neighbor, moving on is going to be a lot different than she thought.  Her new neighbor is a real douche.  He’s grouchy, antagonistic, and has the noisiest dogs in the building.  Dealing with a jerk is one thing, but losing sleep because of a dog is another.  When she confronts him about the dogs, the sparks fly.  When he overhears her therapy session and adds his two cents, well that is just rude.  When she accidentally tries to burn down the building, the last thing she expects is pizza for dinner with her neighbor and a new dating coach.  One that sets her up on an online dating site and protective measures.  She didn’t expect to find a new best friend.  She also didn’t expect to fall in love with her new best friend.  She also would of never thought she could get her heart broken worse than before.  Her previous life was nothing compared to her life with her Neighbor Dearest.

Damien is what he is.  He’s not looking for a relationship.  He values his friendship with Chelsea.  She has become the most important person in his life.  He wants her to have all the happiness she deserves.  He just can’t be the one who gives her the happily ever after.  He has a history that can’t be changed and nothing can change his future.  His head says no but his heart says yes.  His heart is broken and not just by his choices.

Chelsea and Damien have to mend their broken hearts and find their new beginning.

Penelope Ward outdid herself with Neighbor Dearest.  I loved every moment.  I also loved that she tied her three stand alone books together through her dynamic characters.  There’s still another broken heart out there, Chelsea’s sister Jade.  Jade’s man dumped her for his roommate.  Maybe Damien’s brother Ty can step up to the plate.

NEIGHBOR DEAREST
CHAPTER ONE

SUPERSONIC HEARING

Copyright © 2016 by

Penelope Ward

My little sister is such a drama queen. Literally. Jade is an actress on Broadway.

She clapped her hands together, applauding the students who’d just bravely put themselves out there to try out for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. “You all did such a great job today! Tomorrow we cast the roles and start our first rehearsal. This is gonna be epic!”

Jade had come out to the Bay Area to visit our family for the week and offered to volunteer at the youth center where I worked. Since there wasn’t enough time to produce an entire play, Jade decided to direct the kids in one key scene from the musical that would be performed later in the week.

I loved my job as director of the arts at the Mission Youth Center. It was just about the only thing going right in my life. The only downside was the fact that these walls were haunted by memories of my ex, Elec, who used to be a youth counselor here. That was how we met. He’d loved his job, too, until he quit so that he could move to New York after we broke up. He moved to be with her. I shook my head to shoo away thoughts of him and Greta.

Jade grabbed her purse. “I need to go back to your place to use the bathroom and have a quick bite.”

I’d just moved into a new apartment that was only a few blocks away from my job. The lease had finally run out on the place I’d been renting with Elec across town. Even though my ex sent me his half of the rent for the remainder of our lease after he’d moved out, I couldn’t wait to vacate that place; every corner of it reminded me of him and of the miserable months that followed our break up.

My place was right in the south central section of the Mission District. I loved the culture in my new neighborhood. Produce bins and a variety of cafes lined the streets. It was also a mecca for Latin culture, which was great, except for the fact that it reminded me of Elec, who was half Ecuadorian. Little reminders of the guy who broke my heart were everywhere.

Jade and I strolled down the sidewalk, stopping at a fruit stand so that she could buy some papayas for an afternoon smoothie she planned to make back at my apartment. We also ended up getting two coffees to go.

I bent back the opening on my coffee lid as we walked. “So, little sis, I never thought we would be in the same predicament at the same time.”

Jade had recently been dumped by her musician boyfriend.

“Yes. But the difference is, I feel like I have way more distractions in my life than you do. It’s not that I don’t think about Justin. It’s not that I don’t get sad, but my performances keep me so busy that it’s almost like I don’t have time to wallow in it, you know?”

“I told you I’ve been doing these phone therapy sessions, right?”

Jade took a sip then shook her head. “No.”

“Yeah. I found this psychologist who specializes in trauma from failed relationships, but she’s in Canada. Anyway, we do phone sessions one night a week.”

“Is it helping?”

“It always helps to talk things out.”

“Yeah. But no offense, you don’t seem any better for it. Anyway, you can talk things out with Claire or me. You don’t need to pay big bucks to talk to a stranger.”

“Nighttime is really my only time to talk to anyone. You’re performing at night, and Claire is too wrapped up in being a blissful newlywed. Besides, she’s never had her heart broken. She listens, but she doesn’t get it.”

Our older sister, Claire, married her high school sweetheart. Even though the three of us were close growing up in nearby Sausalito, I’d always felt more comfortable opening up to Jade.

When we arrived at my building, my sister stopped to sit on one of the benches in the corner of the fenced-in courtyard. “Let’s sit for a bit, finish our coffees.” Her gaze wandered across the grass to my shirtless neighbor. “Okay…who’s the hottie in the beanie defacing the property?”

“What is it with you and beanies?”

“Justin used to wear one. That’s why I love them. Isn’t that sad?”

“That is sad.”

“This from the girl who still sleeps in her ex’s shirt.”

“It’s comfortable. It has nothing to do with Elec,” I lied. It was the one thing I allowed myself from him. It made me sad, but I wore it anyway.

“So…who is that guy?”

I didn’t know my neighbor’s name, but I’d see him once in a while doing spray paint art along the wrap-around concrete wall that surrounded the property. It served as a vast canvas. His spray painting was true art, definitely not what would be considered simple graffiti. It was an elaborate mix of celestial and geographical images. This guy just kept adding different artwork to the wall gradually. It was a work in progress. I could only assume he planned to paint the entire circumference of the property, as much as the wall space would allow.

“He lives in the building, next door to me, actually.”

“What is he doing? They allow him to do that here?”

“I don’t know. The first time I saw him out here, I thought he was vandalizing the property. But no one seems to care or stop him. Every day, he adds to the mural. It’s actually quite beautiful. But it doesn’t match his personality.”

Jade blew on her coffee. “What do you mean?”

“He’s not very nice.”

“You’ve talked to him?”

“No. He’s just not friendly. I’ve tried to make eye contact, but he walks right by me. He has these two big dogs, and they’re pretty mean. They bark all of the time. He walks them every morning.”

“Maybe he’s like a savant. You know, really good with art. Or maybe he’s a genius but with limited social skills. What do they call that…Asperger’s?”

“No. He communicates just fine. I’ve seen him yelling at a few people. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t have that. This guy is just not friendly. He doesn’t have Asperger’s. He’s just an ass.

Jade chuckled. “I think you should totally stop by his place with some warm muffins wrapped up in a basket. It’s the neighborly thing to do. Maybe he’ll loosen up…or loosen you up.”

“Muffins, huh? What’s that code for?”

“Muff…muffins. Same thing. If I lived here, I’d be all over that. But I don’t live here. You do. And you totally need a distraction. I say…he’s it.”

I admired the guy’s broad shoulders and tanned muscular back as his arm moved the spray can up and down. “God, doesn’t he remind you of Elec, though? Arm tattoo…dark hair. Artistic. Basically, that’s the last type of guy I’m going for at this point.”

“So, if someone looks like or seems similar to Elec, then they’re automatically disqualified? They’re destined to do the same thing Elec did? Is that how you think? That’s just stupid rationale.”

“Maybe that’s fucked-up. But the last thing I want is to be with someone who reminds me of him in the least.”

“Well, that’s a shame, because Elec was freaking hot, and this guy…is even hotter.”

“Can you remind me why we’re discussing this? The dude doesn’t even say hello to me. He’s not signing up to be on this delusional version of The Bachelorette. He’s not interested.”

Neighbor Dearest suddenly wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off the mask covering his nose and mouth, and dumped the spray cans into a black drawstring sack. He slung it over his shoulder and just when I thought he was going to walk away and out of the courtyard, he began to walk in our direction. Jade straightened in her seat, and I hated that my pulse raced a bit.

His eyes were focused on me. I wouldn’t call it an angry stare, but he wasn’t smiling. The sunlight beamed directly into his blue eyes, which glowed and really stood out against his tan skin. Jade was right; this guy was truly gorgeous.

“Blueberry are my favorite,” he said.

“What?”

“Muffins.”

“Oh.”

Jade snorted but stayed silent, letting me take the brunt of this humiliation.

“And I’m not anti-social or a savant. I’m just a good old-fashioned prick…with supersonic hearing.”

He smirked and walked away before I could say anything.

When he was safely out of earshot—for real this time—Jade sighed. “Angry guys are the best in bed.”

“You just can’t stop yourself, can you? Haven’t you done enough damage? I’ve always told you that you’re loud when you think you’re whispering. Now there’s proof…at my expense.”

“You’ll be thanking me later when you’re screaming out in orgasm as the angry artist is Van Goh-ing down on you.”

“You’re crazy.”

“That’s why you love me.”

“It is.”

~Franka~

“You need to leave,” I declared.

His brows drew together a moment before his expression showed clearly that comprehension had dawned.

Sadly, comprehension might have dawned but he didn’t leave.

He crouched by the bed and offered in a soft voice, “You need me to carry you to the other room so you can have a bit of privacy?”

Dear goddess.

He thought I needed a chamber pot.

But…

What was happening to my face?

Dear goddess!

The heat I felt in my cheeks could be nothing other than me blushing.

I didn’t blush. I’d never blushed. Not even when I’d set about seducing my first lover at age sixteen.

I needed to be quit of this man as soon as possible.

“No…I…do…not,” I bit out.

“Sure?” he asked kindly.

“I need you to leave, Noctorno,” I used his full name in an effort to irritate, something that worked if the flare in his eyes was any indication, “so Josette can prepare me. We’re away to Kristian’s this morning.”

Another drawing of his brows before he asked, “What?”

“After my toilette, Josette and I are to my sleigh so we can begin our journey to my brother’s home.”

His eyes got bigger as his mouth inquired peculiarly, “Are you high?”

“No,” I answered his ridiculous question unnecessarily, “Indeed, I’m low. As you can see since I’m lying abed.”

For a second he just stared at me.

Then he threw his head back and burst into loud, deep, beautiful laughter.

I wanted to throw something at him.

Unfortunately, in my current position, this was not an option open to me.

“I fail to see what’s amusing,” I noted.

He controlled his mirth only to mutter, “I’ll explain it later.” He went on more distinctly, “Frannie, you’re not goin’ to your brother’s today. Or tomorrow. Or until you’re fit. Then, maybe Valentine will spirit you there, or whatever the fuck that’s called. But for the foreseeable future, your ass is in that bed and you’re resting so you can heal.”

Well!

Who did he think he was, telling me what I would or would not do?

“As you’ve determined,” I began, “this is not the first time I’ve been in this condition so I do believe that I know best what I’m capable of and…”

I stopped speaking because he came slightly out of his crouch so he could put his face into my face and he was no longer looking mirthful.

He was looking angry.

Very angry.

“That was when you had no one lookin’ out for you but that’s not the case anymore. So this is how it’s gonna be,” he announced.

He then, to my shock, irritation and outrage, announced how it was going to be.

Like he had the right to tell me how it was going to be!

Michel’s Review

Every summer I make it a goal to read a few series that I haven’t had time to get to.  One of those series was the Fantasyland Series by Kristen Ashley.  Although I am a huge Kristen Ashley fan, I am not really into fantasy romance.  I have to be in the “mood” to read this type of book.  Summer was the perfect time for me to dive into this series and give it my full attention.  Once again Kristen Ashley wowed me with her vivid imagination, her sexy alpha men, quirky capable women, sizzling hot romance with a touch of humor, and an entertaining story.  The Fantasyland Series had a bonus, it had a special blend of magic and mystique in two parallel worlds.

Midnight Soul should not be read as a stand alone in this series.  It is the grand finale.

As I have said many times before, Kristen Ashley is the bomb!  Once again she has taken a character that readers disliked and turned their hearts.  Kristen Ashley gave Franka Drakkar a complete makeover.  Readers got a glimpse into the real woman beneath the facade.  A woman with vulnerabilities, extreme loyalties, monumental insecurities, and a big heart waiting to be given.  Only a man like Noctorno Hawthorne could see beneath the surface and see the beautifull soul buried deep within.

After the mega showdown and resolutions, Franka is in a different place.  She is transitioning into a new life with the possibilities of new friendships, relationships, and life experiences.  She’s a bit lost because her life has completely changed and she’s not on solid footing.  Noc can see her internal struggles and offers friendship.  He introduces her to his world, the modern parallel world that leaves her with wonder and curiosity.

This newly found friendship leads Franka on a new adventure, an adventure of the heart.  Together Noc and Franka are going to discover the best of both worlds and the true meaning of happily ever after.

As most Kristen Ashley fans know, Kristen is the queen of happily ever afters that are told through epic epilogues.

I am happy that I opened my mind and embraced the Fantasyland series.  It was a reading adventure with Kristen Ashley magic.

I highly recommend the Fantasyland Series.

Kristin Ashley - headshotAbout Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn’t taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen’s Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning.

Nothing’s changed.

Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she’s blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched).

Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up.

And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Joanna Wylde returns to the “wild and raw”* world of the Reapers MC with the story of Gage and Tinker…

The club comes first.

I’ve lived by those words my whole life—assumed I’d die by them, too, and I never had a problem with that. My Reaper brothers took my back and I took theirs and it was enough. Then I met her. Tinker Garrett. She’s beautiful, she’s loyal, and she works so damned hard it scares me sometimes . . . She deserves a good man—one better than me. I can’t take her yet because the club still needs me. There’s another woman, another job, another fight just ahead.

Now she’ll learn I’ve been lying to her all along. None of it’s real. Not my name, not my job, not even the clothes I wear. She thinks I’m nice. She pretends we’re just friends, that I’ve still got a soul . . . Mine’s been dead for years. Now I’m on fire for this woman, and a man can only burn for so long before he destroys everything around him.

I’m coming for you, Tinker.

Soon.

“I can’t believe how late it is,” Tinker said, yawning, and I realized the movie had ended. Now she stretched upward, the blanket falling to her waist as her boobs pushed forward.

God, how much should a man be expected to take?

I should’ve stayed away from her completely—that’d been the plan—but something had snapped when I’d seen her out in the courtyard. Couldn’t remember the last time I’d met a woman like Tinker. She was smart and sexy and funny, and she worked damned hard to take care of her family and business. Sure, I wanted to fuck her—you’d have to be gay not to—but I respected her, too.

“I should probably get going,” she said, offering me a smile so sweet I wanted to bite her lips. “I like to check on Dad before going to sleep, and I’ve got to be up early in the morning. I’ve got to package orders for the courier tomorrow—if they aren’t ready by two p.m., I’m screwed.”

I considered rolling over on top of her. Pushing her down into the couch cushions, shoving my leg between hers, and showing her what a real man feels like.

“Cooper?” she asked, looking confused. I blinked a couple times, forcing myself to focus on her face.

“I’m going to watch another one,” I told her, because I’m a goddamn masochist. “You sure you’re ready to head out?”

She frowned, and I could almost read her thoughts. Yes, she should leave. But she wanted me as much as I wanted her. And yeah, I realize that makes me sound like an egotistical ass, but this wasn’t my first rodeo. I saw the lust in her eyes, and the way she licked her lips and stared at my mouth. This wasn’t a one-way street, not even close.

“I guess I could stay a little longer,” she whispered. Christ, she was so sweet and soft. I wanted to bite her even more now. Suck that pouty lower lip into my mouth and shove a finger up her ass.

Break her.

You’re one sick fuck.

Why yes. Yes, I am. Thanks for noticing.

I managed to control the urge, catching her hand instead, giving it a friendly squeeze like some kind of pathetic tool. Her fingers tightened on mine, then she pulled away and snuggled back down under the blanket, raising her feet to rest on the coffee table. I grabbed the remote and clicked through the menu.

Tomorrow I’d do my job. I’d fuck Talia and spy on Marsh and look for any kind of weakness that might end this situation, the faster the better. Tonight, though . . . Tonight I’d pretend this wasn’t a waste of time.

Goddamn, but my dick hurt.

The next hour was torture.

Tinker sat next to me, all cute and classy and absolutely refusing to make any kind of eye contact. I don’t know how she felt, but to me the sexual tension hanging in the air was thick and heavy. I kept thinking about her hand in mine—small, but strong. The hand of someone who knew how to work hard. So far as I knew, Talia had never held down a job, let alone supported herself.

The couch shifted, and I glanced over to find Tinker sliding deeper into the cushions, drawing the blanket up to her chin. Our legs were maybe six inches apart. She shifted again, and then her hand bumped mine under the blanket. She jerked it back quickly, and I caught the hint of a flush on her cheeks. That was another thing I liked about her—her skin was so pale that I could see every hint of arousal.

Grabbing her hand, I pulled it over to rest on my thigh. This was a really bad idea, so I pointedly refused to think it through. Her hand tensed at first, then relaxed into my strength. My cock swelled against the fabric of my jeans, just inches from her fingers—it’d be so easy to push her hand toward it, wrap it around my painfully swollen dick, and just go to town.

Tinker’s fingers gave a quick squeeze—almost more of a spasm—and I bit back a groan.

Yeah, okay. Really, really bad idea. I should get off the couch and shut this shit down right now, because I couldn’t afford to blow things with Talia just yet. Instead I found myself leaning toward Tinker, bumping shoulders.

God.

I’d grown a pussy. No other explanation, because I couldn’t figure out why the hell else an adult man would sit holding hands under a damned blanket like a kid.

Michel’s Review

It’s hard to believe that Reaper’s Fire by Joanna Wylde is the sixth book in the Reaper’s Motorcycle Club series.  I still can’t get enough of this series.  I remember reading the first book, Reaper’s Property, over three years ago when it was first published by a smaller ebook publishing company. I was mesmerized by the biker community and their lawless life style.   I remember going to one of the first big book signings, Book Bash 2013 in Orlando, and standing in a long line to meet Joanna Wylde. At that time there wasn’t a print book available for her to sign.  Fans were getting book marks, t-shirts, and other items signed.  The one thing we all had in common was how desperate we were to meet the author that created a biker named Horse that stole our hearts.  Joanna Wylde is an author that paved the path for Biker / MC romance series.  Readers wanted a authentic bad boy that commanded the world on his terms.  The Reaper’s MC is still out in front of the pack and dominating the MC romance world.

The latest release, Reaper’s Fire is another page turner.  In many ways Reaper’s Fire runs parallel to Reaper’s Fall (book 5).  The timeline and several of the climatic events that take place in both books are from different characters perspectives and roles in these events.

Gage and Painter were sent to Hallies Falls by their club, Reaper’s MC, to determine what was going on with the Nighthawks MC, one of their alliances in their territory.  The Nighthawks have been neglecting their duties to the Reaper’s.  They are stealing money, skimming product, and taking on too many new recruits.  They are building an army to take over the territory.  Pic, the Reaper’s president, has sent Gage and Painter undercover to find out what’s going on.  Gage is ordered to go undercover and infiltrate the Nighthawks MC.  He has to create a new identity that doesn’t tie him to the Reaper’s.

Gage becomes Cooper, a recently divorced trucker laying low until all the papers are signed.  He takes on a job as a handyman in exchange for rent.  The owner of the apartments, Tinker, is one of the sexiest women he has met.  He has to put his own desires aside, he is on the job.  The easiest way to infiltrate the Nighthawks is through their president’s pyscho sister, Talia Jackson.

Tinker moved back to Hallies Falls after a tragic event that led to her separation from her husband.  She needs to take care of her father who suffers from dementia. He is getting worse since her mother passed away.  She is struggling to keep her mother’s gift store open, her own candy business thriving, take care of the apartments, and handle the care of her father.  Her life is beyond stressed.  When she hires the sexy newcomer in town as a handyman, she is in for a whole new kind of stress.  He’s taken and his girlfriend is downright scary.

While Gage is trying to keep Talia under control and get a handle on what’s going on inside the Nighthawks clubhouse, he’s also battling his attraction to Tinker.  This job can’t be over soon enough.  He’s going to claim Tinker as his own.

Things are much worse than Gage or the Reaper’s anticipated.  Cleaning up the Nighthawks is going to take more than shutting them down.  Somebody will have to stay behind to control the chaos.  Gage is willing to stay because he wants Tinker.

Tinker and Gage had to work for their relationship.  There were a ton of obstacles in their way.  Both are mature adults that have been around the block.  They understand the best things in life are the hardest to acquire .  It takes two to make this work. First they have to handle the chaos in their lives.

So many things happened in this book that tied this series together.  It was intense, sexy, and emotional.  The characters were larger than life and made a great impact on the Reaper’s series.  The one thing I loved most was that Gage was a lot like Horse.  He was a complete alpha male claiming his woman on his own terms.

I can’t wait to see what comes next for the Reaper’s MC.  Joanna Wylde has created a legacy in the Biker Romance world.  To this day I would still spend hours standing in a long line to meet Joanna Wylde and get my Reaper’s MC books signed.

“Edie…please…just…wait.”

I gripped the railing as if it might propel me forward. Instead, my footsteps faltered and slowed. I stood facing away, my back heaving as his consuming presence swarmed over me from behind.

“Please.” This time it was a whisper. A plea.

Sincere.

Slowly I turned.

Drawn.

He’d always been my weakness.

Austin stood at the end of the walkway, just outside the reach of the lights, his body obscured in shadows.

Even larger than I’d imagined when I’d first seen him up on stage.

So foreign.

So familiar.

My heart ached. Because I was looking at the boy who’d been my best friend. The one person who I’d thought would completely understand. One who wouldn’t judge or make it hurt more than it already did.

He’d been my safety.

My haven.

Until he’d dragged me right back into hell.

“Why are you here?” My words cracked. “H-h-how…how did you find me?”

I saw the shake of his head, and he took a single step forward, out of the shadows and into the glow of the single lamp attached high on the exterior wall that lit the way.

It hit him like a spotlight.

The boy was so beautiful.

It was a threatening kind of beauty, a whorl of mystery and pain, sharp lines and corded muscle.

It almost dropped me to my knees.

He fisted his hands at his sides. The question was strained, hard as it pressed from his mouth. “You believe in fate, Edie?”

Old grief I’d bottled for so long burst. It came out as some kind of maniacal cry. Incredulous. Oozing disbelief. “After everything that happened…that’s what you’re going to ask me?”

“Edie…I—”

“Do you have any idea how badly you hurt me?” I cut him off, my own hands fisting as I took a single step forward. “The damage you caused? Careless words, Austin. So fucking careless, thrown out there without a single thought to the repercussions, without any consideration of how they would affect me. How they would change my life. You promised.” My brow twisted with the accusation. “And now you have the nerve to stand there and ask me if I believe in fate?”

I swallowed hard, shook my head. “You can go to straight to hell, Austin Stone.”

He laughed, but there was zero humor behind it. “Come on, Edie. You can do better than that, can’t you? Considering you know hell is where I’ve been all along, and you and I both know I deserve so much worse. And yeah…those words were reckless, but you know they weren’t heedless. You couldn’t expect me to just stand there. Not with him. Not with what he was saying. Implying. I couldn’t.” The last cracked on the emphasis.

I felt as if every cell in my body was being crushed. Squeezed so tight there was no chance but for everything to implode.

“And because you lost it, I lost it all. You. My home. My future.”

His big hands fisted. “I know. I…I fucked it up, Edie. Warned you, I always fuck it up.”

But what he failed to say was he’d promised he wouldn’t fuck it up with me.

I couldn’t tell if I was relieved or terrified when Jed suddenly rounded the corner. His sister, Blaire, was hot on his heels.

“Edie,” Jed gushed out in relief when he saw me. He came to a stop a few steps behind Austin.

As if he’d just stepped into the bristling intensity and it tripped up his feet.

The stand-off.

The war.

Austin standing there? I knew that’s exactly what this was going to be.

“What the hell is going on here?” Jed demanded. His voice twisted into a threat. He glared at the back of Austin’s head, worried eyes flicking to me, hardening when they snapped back to Austin.

Blaire tugged at his arm. “Jed…I told you to give her a minute. Sometimes you need to let people sort out their own issues.”

Jed just grunted and shrugged off her arm.

Refusing to budge.

Austin swung his head to look behind him. When he did, his face shifted to the side, all those hard, beautiful lines exposed in profile, his expression winding into a bitter sneer. “Nah, man. All’s good here. Just telling an old friend hi. Isn’t that right, Edie?”

Aggression curled between them.

Alive and raging.

Jed was a burly, beefy, hulk of a man, a full beard covering most of his face, his brown hair cut short at the sides and longer on top.

Had I ever imagined him and Austin going toe to toe, I would have put all my money on Jed.

Now I wasn’t so sure.

Jed lifted his chin, as if for the moment he was standing down, turning to me as his tone softened. “You okay, Edie?”

I nodded. “Yeah, I’m okay.”

Lie. Lie. Lie.

I was shaken to my core.

“I just want to go home.” It left me on a desperate breath.

Jed pushed around Austin and stalked my way. “All right, let’s get you out of here.”

As she passed by Austin, Blaire cast a searching glance in his direction, before her attention flickered over to me, a ton of worried questions moving across her expression.

Questions I didn’t know if I had the strength to answer.

With an arm wound around my shoulder, Jed spun me, breaking the spell Austin had me under, and tucked me into his side.

Protecting and shielding.

He began to lead me away, down the planks and toward his car waiting in the parking lot out front.

With each step we took, I could feel the heat of Austin’s stare. That burning intensity I wasn’t sure I could ever escape.

The hurt and hatred.

It was a hatred I couldn’t tell who it was directed at.

If it was aimed at him or me or the rest of the world that had threatened to choke the life out of us.

The world we were supposed to take on together.

Just as we started to round the corner, I paused because I just couldn’t stop myself, turned to look back at the man who stood there staring back at me.

Emotion gripped his expression just as tight as the clench of his fists.

Hard and tortured.

As if I was the one inflicting the pain.

I choked down the sorrow that rose like a cyclone, spinning and spinning, whipping up the old affection that longed for that soft, understanding boy to take me in his arms and sing in my ear.

Dangerous.

I searched inside myself for the shelter that secured my heart. The flimsy cover I wore that just barely kept me together. I forced myself to speak the words I knew would drive him away, as much of a lie as they were. “And for the record…no, Austin, I definitely don’t believe in fate.”

book blurb

From the USA Today Bestselling Authors, A.M. Hargrove and Terri E. Laine comes a new standalone sexy sports romance, Sidelined – A Wilde Players Dirty Romance.

Cassidy

I hate him… I love him… He destroyed me… and now He needs me.

Fletcher Wilde, a gorgeous quarterback in the NFL, is the man I should have married. He’s is the one that walked away, choosing football over me. He shouldn’t be back, especially not looking that good. And not sitting in my waiting room chair with a bum leg and confident cocky grin that sets my insides on fire.

It’s impossible to forget how he rocked my world both in and out of the bedroom. Keeping things professional won’t be easy, especially given our history. My mission, however, is getting him back on the field—the place he loved more than me, while not losing myself in him all over again.

Fletcher

Cassidy Miller is the only physical therapist in town. And after a potential career ending injury, she’s my ticket back on the field or my NFL career is over. Unfortunately, she’s the same Cassidy who ripped my heart to shreds when I thought we were a team.

Sexy and intelligent, she’s the last person I thought I’d see again. As it turns out, she looks better than ever, making me want that smart mouth of hers doing things to me that would drive a sane man crazy.

Lucky for me, my determination is legendary. Winning is in my blood, which makes me number one on the field. Being a single-minded man, my focus is to get her back and this time for good.

excerpt

“Can we start from scratch? Like this whole night?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

A frustrated sigh leaves me. “I don’t want it to be like this between us.”

I expect a snappy response, but that’s not what I get. “I don’t really either. But after you dumped me—”

What is she saying? “I didn’t dump you. I had to leave to go with the pros.”

She looks at me like she wants to say duh.

“Yeah, you dumped me for the pros.”

My hand drives through my hair. “That’s not how it went. I had to leave, and you were supposed to come.”

That one word has me harder than I thought possible. She speaks, but I’m barely coherent to what she’s saying.

“I had to finish college. Then there was PT school, my dad, and I couldn’t possibly go.”

Reaching out, I take her wrist and pull her closer. Her eyes widen, making her look like a doe in the middle of the road. And, damn, if that doesn’t make her my prey.

The words crawl out of my mouth like a growl. “Take your clothes off and get in this tub with me.” I shut off the water and push the button to get the jets running. This is a dead-end conversation, like it will always be.

Her head shakes, sending all that hair I want to wrap around my hand flying.

“You’re crazy.”

“Maybe.” I haven’t let go of her wrist, determined to convince her to stay. “Everyone’s entitled to a little crazy.

When she doesn’t answer, I give her hand a slight tug. “Take your clothes off, Cass, and get in here.”

“I might hurt your knee.”

“Chicken.” I splash her with some water.

She jumps back, and I lose my hold on her. “Fletcher, you got me wet.”

Her eyes narrow as my grin widens. “That’s the idea.”

Michel’s Review

The football season is almost upon us.  The training camps are underway and the fans are gearing up for opening day.  Sports romance fans are also getting in the mood for some football, or should a say a hot football romance.  A. M. Hargrove and Terri E. Laine have delivered the opening football romance for the readers to devour.  First up on the players roster is Fletcher Wilde, NFL quarterback.  Are you ready for some hot passes and scoring touchdowns that will make your panties wet and your heart flutter?  Fletcher has the plays.

Fletcher Wilde has returned home to North Carolina on his season break to take care of his parents home and dogs while they are away on vacation.  Nothing ever happens in this sleepy small town and it’s a good rest before summer training camp.  He hasn’t been home since he signed with the NFL.

Twenty five seconds can be a game changer.  It can change the coarse of the game or change the outcome of your life.  Fletcher knows this but didn’t realize the impact until twenty five seconds changed everything.  His career is on the line and his heart is taking back his life.  A hit and run accident changed Fletcher Wilde’s life.  It brought him back to Cassidy, the only woman he has ever loved.

Cassidy Miller was devastated when Fletcher left her for the NFL.  Picking up the pieces of her broken heart was difficult.  She moved on, finished college, married, started a career, and became a business owner. On paper it looked like her life was perfect.  The fact is that she had a miserable marriage and is now divorced.  Although she is the only therapist in town, her business is struggling.  When Fletcher Wilde walks through her door for therapy, her heart is on the line.

Cassidy and Fletcher are finally going to get closure or the happily ever after they were meant to have.  They will have to deal with Fletcher’s injuries, Cassidy’s mistrust, a conniving agent, overprotective BFF, greedy team owners, and a diabolical ex husband.  Fletcher’s game for anything as long as Cassidy is his end zone.

A. M. Hargrove and Terri E. Laine have a winner with this second chance romance.  I’m looking forward to seeing what Wilde is up next the game roster.

Sidelined was the perfect, sexy sports romance to kick off the season.

9781501105791From USA TODAY bestselling author Renée Carlino (Before We Were Strangers), a warm and witty novel about a struggling writer who must come to grips with her past, present, and future after she discovers that she’s the inspiration for a pseudonymously published bestselling novel.

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J. Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

 Excerpt

During the winter we pretended our way through the classics, read every popular kid’s book and by spring of our sixth grade year, the spring of all the rain, we were ready to be outside and explore again. There was a creek about half a mile back from our houses, past the tree line. Because of all the rain that year, it had become more of a river with the strongest currents right behind where we lived. Every adult warned us to be careful, even my dead-beat dad would say, “You better use that big brain of yours and stay out of the creek. You want to go swimming, you can go to the pool in town.”

Funny he would say that because the community pool was a seven-mile bike ride and it cost three dollars to get in. There was no way I was going unless Leila, Jax’s mom gave us a ride and even then, I would have to borrow the money to get in. Frankly, going to the town pool was a pipe dream. It became a myth to us, a fantasy like Disneyland or Europe. Jax and I would try to imagine what it was like to go there.

“I bet they sell popsicles and popcorn and they probably have clowns too,” I said.

It was a warm day; we had made a picnic in the weeds. I laid out my Toy Story sleeping bag I’d had from when I was a kid. Jax brought a jar of applesauce and I brought Fun Dip that my dad had 53148-swear-life-graphics-4abought me at the 7-11. We mixed the fun dip into the jar and took turns eating spoonfuls.

“Community pools don’t have clowns, genius.”

“How do you know?” I said.

“Because I just do.”

“I bet there’s a high dive, like fifty feet in the air.”

“Do you know how high fifty feet is? You would die hitting the water. The impact would kill you.”

“You’re such a know-it-all, Jackson. Why can’t you let a girl dream? We’re never going to that pool because no one will ever take us, plus, it costs money, and last time I checked you weren’t making any.”

He lay back on the blanket and propped his hands behind his head and closed his eyes. “I’m not a know-it-all, I just have cable. And as soon as I turn sixteen, I’m getting a job. I’ll pay for us to go to the pool. You’ll see, it’s just a big hole with water in it.”

I never really stared at him until that day. His eyes were closed so I took the time to inspect every inch of him. I was so curious about his body. My own body was changing and I was terrified of it. Jax was getting taller. He was going to be tall like his father, but he looked more like his mother in coloring and features. Jax’s mom was French, so they had this creamy skin that looked sun-kissed year around and his brown hair and brown eyes had streams of gold running throughout it. He was letting his hair grow longer because he’d been watching some show on TV that took place in California. He said everyone in California had long hair.

I was trying to grow my own unruly, brown locks out. I don’t know why, I always had it in a braid. Maybe because I thought I would go to California with Jax one day. We both yearned for more than weeds and corn. All the books gave us those silly ideas and filled our heads with things that might never be.

I lay down beside him and stared directly into the sun. He turned on his side and propped his head on his elbow.

“You’ll go blind doing that,” he said in a low voice.

“Leave me alone.”

“Why are you in such a bad mood? You PMSing?”

“What do you know about it?”

“A lot.”

“I doubt that and even if I were, it’s beyond rude to talk to me about it.” I hadn’t started my period yet but I wasn’t going to tell him that.

Robin’s Review

Renee Carlino swept me away to a different time and place in the pages of her newest novel titled Swear on this Life. As I began reading, I found myself on a dirt road in rural Ohio. In the front yard of a ramshackle home located at the end of a dirt road. In a dilapidated shack found just beyond the tree line. From the moment I started reading, I was captivated by this story about best friends Emerson and Jackson – two poor, lonely and neglected children who only had each other to rely upon.

It didn’t take long for me to realize Swear on this Life would be special. First of all, this novel is an unusual blend of the young adult, new adult, and coming of age genres. Swear on this Life is also a second-chance romance, but what I love most about this story is that it’s about best friends who fall in love with each other! I’m very fond of friends-to-lovers romances, and from the beginning, I adored this novel!

Emiline is an aspiring author who has a daytime job as an adjunct creative writing professor at the University of California San Diego. She’s been dating Trevor since her senior year at Berkeley, although she feels her relationship with Trevor is not going anywhere. Our story really gets underway when Emiline’s roommate Cara begs her to read a bestselling novel titled All the Roads Between by debut author J. Colby.

As she begins reading Cara’s recommendation, Emiline realizes the story is familiar. From the first sentences, it’s apparent All the Roads Between is about Emiline and her childhood! She’s the female lead, Emerson, which means the novel has been written by her first love – Jason Colbertson, who is Jackson – someone she hasn’t seen or heard from in years!

Swear on this Life is essentially two stories written into one. With this writing technique, we are able to read about Emiline’s current life, while simultaneously reading about what took place during her childhood and teen years. We begin to understand Emiline’s character and how her life has been shaped. Although I have seen other authors use this writing technique, Renee Carlino was very clever with how she penned this novel. Swear on this Life has a savvy twist!

It’s been said that teenagers feel everything more acutely. Renee Carlino perfectly captured the intense emotions of two poor, neglected teenagers who are lovesick, who are desperately trying to stay together! I really connected with these characters. I fell in love with Emerson and Jackson, fell in love with their story! I felt their joy, pain and uncertainty as they supported each other through the abuse and neglect. All the Roads Between is a fascinating story all by itself!

And, of course, there is Emiline. I struggled with her character early in the story, but Emiline showed real growth over the course of the story. She faced down her demons and a past that she has ardently avoided. I couldn’t help but root for her to heal, find closure and get the guy! I wasn’t really sure what to think of Jason at first, but I think it’s because I was reading from Emiline’s point of view. She wasn’t sure what to think of Jason after he wrote down the story of her childhood and teenage years in the pages of a bestselling novel. But my love for Jason came as Emiline’s love for Jason became apparent.

In the end, Swear on this Life is not a story about four people, and it’s not just two separate novels. It’s one story about two individuals – Jason and Emiline. This is their story, and it’s one that is extremely fulfilling! Swear on this Life is a 2016 favorite of mine, and I’m giving Renee Carlino 5 stars!

Michel’s Review
From the moment I opened Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino I was captivated from the beginning to end.  I became immersed in the story and became a part of Emiline’s and Jason’s lives, past and present.  I experienced their emotional journey on a very personal level.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino was written with a very unique plot delivery.  It all begins with Emiline.  She’s a struggling aspiring author teaching creative writing as an adjunct professor.  Her life is anything but perfect.  She’s involved in a long term relationship with Trevor, a former college football star, that seems to have stalled just like her writing.  She’s beginning to question her relationship, her career aspirations, and her life direction.  In her mind she knows she has made the right decisions that have her on the road to a normal, stable life.  A life that is far better than her past.  A past that she chose to put behind her, a past she chose to forget.  The past is part of what shapes and molds an individual.  Good or bad it is a part that should never be forgotten.
***
When her best friend recommends a highly acclaimed novel, All The Roads Between by J. Colby, it’s the beginning of Emiline’s journey in the story of her life.
***
From the very first sentence in All The Roads Between, Emiline is drawn into the story.  Two impoverished kids on a dirt road depending on one another to survive their destructive and destitute lives.  Jackson and Emily are clinging to one another in a world beyond their control.  Their journey from childhood to adolescence is far from the carefree and innocent life most people experience.  There are no rose colored glasses to make their lives look better.  The only thing they have that’s good in their lives is each other.  A love that is completely pure, untarnished by the circumstances of their lives.  Good things are only fleeting in their lives and the ugly world once again rears it’s ugly head.  This time it destroys the only pure thing in their lives, it destroys their love for one another.
***
As Emiline reads this book, she begins to see a parallel of her own life.  All The Roads Between is the story of her childhood.  She is Emily and Jackson is Jason.  Upon further research she finds the author J. Colby is none other than Jason Culbertson, her first love and best friend.  He has betrayed her once again and exposed her dirty secrets.  Secrets that should of stayed buried in the past.  She’s beyond angry, she’s devastated.
***
While reading the book, she discovers that J. Colby will be doing a book signing at a local book store near her.  This is her opportunity to confront Jason after all these years.  She will finally be able to exercise the demons that have haunted her.  She will finally be able to let go of Jason’s betrayal.
***
The confrontation is anything but a long awaited reunion.  It is only the beginning for both Emiline and Jason.  Emiline needs to finish the book before she can move forward.  Jason released his demons long ago, the book is his redemption.  Emily and Jackson’s story is only a part of Emiline and Jason’s story.  It is up to them on how the ending plays out.  It’s time for them to write the rest of their story.  They are long overdue for their happily ever after.
***
Renee Carlino is a brilliant writer.  Two novels merge into an epic love story that take the readers on an emotional journey.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino should be on the big screen.  It is an epic romance that will touch every soul.  It is a true love story.

The Matchmaker's Replacement Banner - Aug 9

VanDyken-TheMatchmakersReplacement-CV-FL-vC6-RGBWingman rule number two: never reveal how much you want them.

Lex hates Gabi. Gabi hates Lex. But, hey, at least the hate is mutual, right? All Lex has to do is survive the next few weeks training Gabi in all the ways of Wingmen Inc. and then he can be done with her. But now that they have to work together, the sexual tension and fighting is off the charts. He isn’t sure if he wants to strangle her or throw her against the nearest sturdy table and have his way with her.

But Gabi has a secret, something she’s keeping from not just her best friend but her nemesis too. Lines are blurred as Lex becomes less the villain she’s always painted him to be…and starts turning into something more. Gabi has always hated the way she’s been just a little bit attracted to him—no computer-science major should have that nice of a body or look that good in glasses—but “Lex Luthor” is an evil womanizer. He’s dangerous. Gabi should stay far, far away.

Then again, she’s always wanted a little danger.

“So,” a familiar voice said above the music. “New job?”

Damn it! “I didn’t even say your name three times!” I whined, turning around to face Lex. He was wearing a tight vintage black T-shirt with low-slung jeans on his hips and the ever-present sex-oozing smile.

“Three times?” He smiled wider. “You said my name three times out loud? Is it your new curse word? You know, like ‘Oh, Lex! Good Lex! Mighty Lex . . .’” His eyebrows drew together. “Somehow all of those sound like very familiar noises women make in my presence.”

“Die, Lex,” I said in an annoyed tone. “How about that one?”

“That’s new.” He snapped his fingers. “But it’s growing on me. Maybe it’s the way you say it, like you want me to die in your arms all Romeo and Juliet style . . .”

“Wow, ten at night and you’re already wasted.” I slapped him on the shoulder. “Take a cab.” I tried to move past him, but he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back, pressing us together. Whether it was on purpose or not I wasn’t sure, but he was warm.

And he felt . . . safe, familiar. My body was playing tricks on me; it was because I was vulnerable.

Like that night when . . .

I locked down my memories, especially that one, and threw away the key. “Lex, what do you want?”

“You,” he said in a serious tone. “Now get up on stage and take off your clothes. I paid for a show.”

I rolled my eyes. “Waitress, Lex. You’ll have to call one of the many numbers on your phone to get a free lap dance.”

“What if I pay?” His breath tickled my ear as my eyes burned with unshed tears. Normally, I wouldn’t let what he did affect me. Normally, I brushed him off, but my armor had already been stripped. Call it exhaustion or maybe just the last remnants of pride I had toppling to the floor.

But I couldn’t hold them in any longer.

One tear fell.

Then another.

I tried to wipe them, tried to jerk free from Lex’s strong arms, but he turned me so abruptly that all I managed to do was soak the front of his shirt with my tears and smear it with mascara.

“Gabs?” His voice rasped as he hugged me tighter. “Come on, we’re going.”

“No.” Panic surged through me as I tried to pull away. “You don’t understand!” I’d given the last of my paychecks to my mom so she could pay the bills at the house, leaving me completely broke for this week’s rent check. I was hoping to make enough money in tips for the rent.

Lex’s eyes crinkled at the sides as he took one look at me and the rest of the seedy bar. I knew what he saw: girls dancing on poles, guys getting drunk and shouting at the girls while they threw dollar bills onto the stage, and a scared, stupid girl clinging to him like her lifeline.

Finally, he released me. “Gabs, I’m sorry, I was joking. We always—” He licked his lips and glanced down at the filthy floor, cursing. “Where’s the money going?”

“Money?”

“New girl!” Dean, my boss, never called me by name, the idiot. “You working or flirting? If he wants time with you, he’s gotta pay.”

“Still a waitress?” Lex’s eyebrows shot up.

I held up my fingers to indicate I needed a few more seconds, but Dean was apparently in a mood and stomped over to us.

“Problem?” he asked, crossing his arms over his skinny chest. The guy was small; Lex could probably break his face blindfolded.

“Yeah,” Lex said, surprising me. “Your waitress just refused to dance with me because you guys are out of private rooms . . . so.”

Dean’s eyes narrowed. “You her boyfriend?”

“Do I look like a man who wants to commit to crazy?” Lex fired back. “But I do have this . . .” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out what looked like at least six hundred dollars in cash. “How long will that get me with your waitress?”

Dean’s eyebrows kissed his hairline as he sputtered out, “At least three hours.”

“I’ll add in another six hundred if I can have table service and a private room, no interruptions.”

“Done.” Dean snapped his fingers above his head as one of his security guards came barreling over. “Please take them to the Diamond Room, no interruptions. Stand outside the door. One waitress goes in and out to provide drinks.”

The security guard nodded.

And five minutes later I was stuck in a personal nightmare. A bottle of champagne rested on ice; two glasses were left on the table. Music pumped through the speaker system. A small stage was set up in the middle of the room, with two poles and some sort of swing that dropped down from the ceiling. I seriously didn’t even want to know what it was for.

“That will be all,” Lex said in a gruff tone. The waitress—I think her name was Holly—bobbed her head, then looked at me out of the corners of her eyes as if scared to leave me alone with the giant.

“It’s fine.” I waved her off and forced a smile.

The door closed.

“Stop pacing.” Lex grabbed a bottle of champagne. “And that ass better give you part of that money . . .”

“Huh?” I turned. Lex had his feet up on the table and was texting. TEXTING!

He glanced up. “What? Something wrong?”

“Uh . . .” I lifted my arms into the air. “You sick bastard, you just paid for private dancing! From me!”

“No I didn’t,” he said calmly. “Nobody knows what goes on in here. Take a nap for all I care, drink some champagne—or you can shock the hell out of me and cry again, but fair warning, I only had one hug in me tonight and you stole it, so . . . I’ll be reverting to the back pat.”

“Who are you?”

“Lex Luthor, philanthropist by day and rescuer of hot waitresses by night.” He smirked and held up the bottle. “Champagne?”

“Unbelievable.” I choked out a laugh. “You just paid over one grand to sit in a crappy club and drink champagne with someone you hate.”

“It’s my good deed for the decade. Just don’t tell Ian. He’ll think I’m sick or something, and the last thing I need is Mother Hen helicoptering around my inner sanctum. He’ll get pissed all over again if he finds out that I’m hacking.”

My skin felt sticky and sweaty, and my feet ached. With slow movements, I made my way over to the couch and sat, not even wanting to know how many germs were on the leather.

“So,” Lex said above the music. “Champagne? Or want me to order you something else?”

“Champagne’s good.” I swallowed and looked down at my hands. “I’m sorry I cried.”

“As you should be. Big girls don’t cry . . . they kick ass. Don’t freak me out like that again, it’s not good for my heart.”

“Finally admitting you have one?”

Lex spread his arms wide. “Clearly, otherwise you’d still be waiting tables.”

“Or dancing,” I muttered.

“Hah.” Lex laughed, actually laughed as if it was funny. “No offense, Gabs, but you’re not like those girls on stage. You can’t . . . you just can’t.”

“I can’t?” Why the hell was I getting offended? “What do you mean I can’t?”

Lex laughed harder. “Gabs, look, there’s nothing wrong with being innocent. Lots of guys dig a girl who has fields that have never been touched, watered, planted, plowed—”

I held up my hand. “I get it.”

“But those types of girls, the good girls, the ones who’ve never been . . .” He smirked. “Conquered? They don’t typically know how to use their bodies in a way that mimics sex on stage. Get it?”

“No.” I crossed my arms. “I don’t get it! Dancing is dancing! A two-year-old can do it!”

“Bad example, bad mental picture all around, Gabs, again solidifying my point. Good girls don’t dance, not like that.” When I didn’t say anything, he added, “Embrace your goodness, don’t get pissed. It’s a compliment.”

“The hell it is!”

“Damn, I love it when you swear,” Lex murmured, taking a long draw of champagne. “See, at least you do that right.”

“I can’t last in here for three hours,” I muttered, jumping to my feet and starting my pacing all over again.

“Want to play games on my cell phone?”

“Like a child!” I blurted. “That’s it! You’re treating me like I’m . . . a toddler! Like I should be thankful you just saved me from hell. Be honest: if you had a sticker and a sucker, would you give them to me if I shut my mouth the entire time?”

Lex gave me a guilty look.

“I’m a woman!”

“Well, if you were a dude, we’d be having a different conversation and you probably would have punched the guys grabbing your ass earlier . . .”

Without thinking, I grabbed my glass of champagne, chugged it, poured another, chugged that one, then with shaky hands grabbed the little remote, turned up the music, and jumped on stage.

I expected Lex to say something inappropriate or at least roll his eyes. Instead, he looked . . . panicked.

“Gabs!” he yelled above the music. “Look, I’m sorry! Just get down!!”

“Oh, I’ll get down!” I grabbed the pole with one hand and leaned back. “Just wait.”

Michel’s Review

Okay ladies, it’s time to get your capes out and super reading powers fired up. Gabbi needs all the girl power she can get. As her designated sidekicks, we the readers have to have her back. We cannot and I repeat cannot fall in love with Lex. He is an evil villain put on this earth to make Gabbi’s life miserable. Do not look into his sexy eyes, do not swoon over his sexy evil smile, and do not peak at those six pack abs he’s packing. I’m telling you… this villain is a thief , he will steal your willpower and heart. Gabbi needs us to help her slay this evil villain or at least put a gag in his sweet mouth.

Gabbi and Lex are world war three waiting to happen. They can’t be around each other without objects flying ( mostly their clothes). Their verbal sparring is their foreplay. Each has quick wit, smart mouths, and sexual weapons. Beneath the battlefield lies two hearts meant for one another.

Lex is a villian. He is going to steal Gabbi’s complete heart. He is going to destroy anything that stands in the way. He’s bringing out his secret weapon, he’s bringing the pirates booty.

Along the way a love story is going to emerge in the aftermath of the destruction from the Matchmakers Replacement.
