When the underwater inhabitants of Monterey Bay mysteriously begin getting sick, Beka Yancy is approached by Boudicca, Queen of the Merpeople, and Gwrtheyrn, the Selkie King, with a request that she, as a Baba Yaga, help unravel the mystery. Marcus Dermott, home again in Monterey to help his ailing father on his fishing boat, is concerned. Not only do he and his crusty Irish father not see eye to eye, the fish seem to have disappeared, leaving his livelihood in danger of failing. With a common goal, Marcus and Beka go to work to uncover the secret of the bay.

As a fan of WICKEDLY DANGEROUS, the first book in the Baba Yaga series by Deborah Blake, I was anxious to read WICKEDLY WONDERFUL. Deborah has scored another winner, once again delivering a fresh take on the traditional Baba Yaga stories. Beka, while very different from Barbara (Book 1), is just as engaging in her own way. Her element is the sea, and so she feels compelled to help the Merfolk and Selkies. Even though she’s still somewhat a novice as a Baba, she steps outside of her comfort zone to help solve the mystery. Marcus is a no-nonsense kind of guy, and about as far from what he views as Beka’s New Age flakiness as can be, but finds himself drawn to her nonetheless. Together they make for a fun and entertaining couple. I loved seeing Beka come into her own, and grow as a Baba, and for Marcus to embrace ideas that were foreign and sometimes uncomfortable.

One of the things that I like best about Deborah’s books is that she manages to pair paranormal romance with social issues (in this case, the importance of mindful living, and stewardship of our resources in a way that is neither preachy nor off-putting), while delivering fast-paced plotting and quirky and likeable characters. I look forward to reading more of her unique storytelling in the near future.

“That wasn’t yours to take away,” he exploded into the otherwise silent night. His words echoed off the surrounding buildings, each wave slicing me to the quick all over again. “That was our place. Not yours.” His voice cracked right alongside my heart.

“Yeah, well, there was a lot of stuff that wasn’t yours to take either.” I held his gaze, desperately trying to be strong, but as his eyes grew wide, I whimpered.

His long legs strode forward, stopping only inches away from me. He was crowding me, but he still leaned in closer to my face. “There is nothing in this world that was ever more mine than you,” he stated. Though it was the absolute truth, I wished with all my heart that it were a lie.

“Till,” I cried, swiping the tears from my eyes.

“Why!” he shouted, causing his muscles to tense under the force. “Goddamn it! I needed that place.”

Porch lights flashed on from the surrounding apartments, illuminating not only the dark but also my rage.

I shoved my hands into his chest. “What about what I needed? You left! I waited in that fucking apartment for weeks.”

He didn’t budge, but my bare feet slipped, sending me toward the ground. Impossibly fast, Till’s hand snaked out and caught my arm. I didn’t let his chivalrous gesture douse my fire. I had six months’ worth of words to say to the man I was irrevocably in love with.

“You took what you wanted. Then you left me.”

“Doodle,” he whispered.

I had been perilously close to the edge of insanity, and with one single word, he’d pushed me over.

I lost it completely.

Pounding my fists against his chest, I screamed at the top of my lungs, “It’s Eliza! My name is fucking Eliza! Not Doodle!” I spun to march away, but Till’s arms folded around me, lifting me off my feet to restrain me.

I was miniscule compared to him. There was no use in fighting, but I still kicked my legs, irrationally desperate to get away from him—but only because I knew I couldn’t keep him for forever.

“Stop it!” he growled into my ear. “I know your Goddamn name—probably better than I know my own.”

I can feel Wilder’s breath against my lips. More than that, I can see it. The sun has set and the temperature has dropped, and air fogs between us. I enjoy the escape writing allows, and fully enjoy weaving a tale and creating crazy characters. After all, writing is the most amazing magic trick in the universe because it allows the reader to crawl inside the mind of the author. If you really think about that … it’s kind of disturbing.

She owns me. That’s all there was to it. Feeling her coming apart with my hands was pure fucking amazing. Her lips were swollen from our kissing; her face was flushed from what we did. I didn’t want any other fucker in this place to see how she looked after she fell apart like this. She was amazing. I was in love with this woman. She owned me. Period.

I wanted to take her right here, against this desk, just bury myself inside her to the hilt. But I wanted to take my time with her. Worship her the way she should be, and I couldn’t do that here. I pushed a piece of hair out from her face. I brought my fingers that were inside her to my mouth. I was right, she tasted so sweet. I couldn’t wait to have more.

“You taste delicious; I can’t wait to make you come with my mouth.” Her eyes rolled back, a very soft moan came from her throat. I continued “But not here baby. I want to take my time with you, lick every inch of your body.” She grabbed me by the shirt and crushed her lips to mine. I guessed she liked my dirty talk. Her body shuddered and invaded my mouth, leading her tongue over mine. Tasting herself on me. God that was so fucking hot! I stopped us before I lost control.

“Ok, we need to go back out there before I say fuck it and take you here against this desk.” She nodded.

We walked back out to the dance floor, and no one looked at us. Good, I wouldn’t want her to feel embarrassed if she thought everyone heard what we were doing. Candace and Ross were dancing in the middle of the floor. I led us over and joined them. We danced and laughed. Somehow this woman dancing with me has turned one of the worst times in my life into the best times. I thought I was going to go crazy on this leave, and now I’m not so sure I want it to end. I needed to think about all of that, but not now.

Now I needed to make this woman mine. Her ass wiggled against me. My hands coasted her waist, I just wanted to fucking ravish her. I ran the tip of my nose along the side of her neck, and pulled her close. Her breathing grew heavy. I knew she could feel how hard I was for her. She ran her hands up my neck and through my hair. I loved it when she did that. It made me want to possess her, go fucking alpha caveman on her. That seemed like all I’ve wanted to do to her since I met her.

What a great book. Razed is the second book in the Barnes Brothers series by Shiloh Walker.

Razed picks up where Wrecked left off. It starts at Zack and Abigail’s wedding. Keelie is Zack’s partner at the tattoo shop. She thought she had some serious feelings for Zack until she kissed him. She quickly recognized that her feelings were misplaced. Still she is feeling off at the wedding. She is left wondering if she is ever going to find the “one” that she can call her own.

Zack’s brother Zane has always had a thing for Keelie. He takes the opportunity to make his move at his brother’s wedding. One dance with Keelie leads to an explosive kiss that has them both seeing stars. But that one kiss clearly proves Keelie isn’t ready to deal with all the emotions that being involved in a committed relationship requires.

Keelie avoids Zane for months. She’s going from one bad date to another. Throwing herself into the dating pool. When one bad date goes horribly wrong, Zane is there to help her through it. She says she could of handled it by herself but in all reality Keelie is one hot mess.

Zane realizes that Keelie has a truckload of issues. Rather than jumping into a physical relationship because the chemistry between the two is explosive, he wants to take his time. He wants to woo Keelie. He wants to court her. He wants her to know he is in it for the long haul. He wants her to know that she can depend on him and he will cherish her.

Zane and Keelie begin their courtship. It is a slow build that captivates them both. There are plenty of surprises along the way. Keelie has to work through all her issues. Zane has to show Keelie what real love is. Their relationship is intense and passionate. Together they find a love meant just for them.

The character development was exceptional. I liked both of the leading characters. The book is well written and keeps readers glued to the pages. Readers quickly become invested in the Barnes family. The love scenes are sizzling hot. The sexual tension and passion is steamy and bold.

I really enjoyed this book. It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order. The first book in the Barnes Brothers series is Wrecked. It features Zack and Abigail’s story.

I highly recommend this book and this series.
