Hades

A Demonica Novella

By Larissa Ione

Synopsis

A fallen angel with a mean streak and a mohawk, Hades has spent thousands of years serving as Jailor of the Underworld. The souls he guards are as evil as they come, but few dare to cross him. All of that changes when a sexy fallen angel infiltrates his prison and unintentionally starts a riot. It’s easy enough to quell an uprising, but for the first time, Hades is torn between delivering justice — or bestowing mercy — on the beautiful female who could be his salvation…or his undoing.

Thanks to her unwitting participation in another angel’s plot to start Armageddon, Cataclysm was kicked out of Heaven and is now a fallen angel in service of Hades’s boss, Azagoth. All she wants is to redeem herself and get back where she belongs. But when she gets trapped in Hades’s prison domain with only the cocky but irresistible Hades to help her, Cat finds that where she belongs might be in the place she least expected…

Hades Teaser 1

Excerpt:

Her luxurious mink-brown wings were gone, sliced off in a brutal ceremony, and with them, her source of power. She totally understood why an Unfallen would cross the barrier between the human and demon realms to turn themselves into True Fallen and gain new wings and new powers. But was the evil upgrade worth it? Cat didn’t think so.

“Cat!” Azagoth’s voice startled her out of her thoughts, and she nearly dropped the tray of dirty dishes as she looked up to see him striding down the hallway from his office.

In the flickering light cast by the iron wall sconces, he didn’t look happy. He also wasn’t alone.

Hades, Azagoth’s second-in-command and the designated Jailor of the Dead, was walking next to him. No, not walking. With the way his thigh muscles flexed in those form-fitting black pants with every silent step, it was more like prowling. His body sang with barely-leashed power, and she shivered in primal, feminine response.

Son of a bitch, Hades was hot. Hard-cut cheekbones and a firm, square jaw gave him a rugged appearance that bordered on sinister, especially when paired with a blue Mohawk she’d kill to run her palm over. But then, she’d kill to run her palms over all of him, and she’d start with his muscular chest, which was usually, temptingly, bare. Not that she’d complain about what he was wearing now, a sleeveless, color-shifting top that clung to his rock-hard abs.

She tried not to stare, but really, even if she’d stood in the middle of the hall with her tongue hanging out, it wouldn’t have mattered. He never looked her way. He never noticed her. She was nothing to him. Not even worth a glance. Those cold, ice-blue eyes looked right through her. And yet, this was a guy who laughed with Lilliana, pulled pranks on the other Unfallen who lived here, and played with hellhounds as if they were giant puppies. Giant, man-eating puppies.

Azagoth stopped in front of her. “Cat? You okay?”

She blinked, realized she’d been lost in a world of Hades. “Ah, yes. Sorry, sir. What is it?”

Michel’s Review

Holy Hades… the latest installment in the Demonica Series, Hades by Larissa Ione is scorching hot.  This novella is exactly what the readers have been wishing for.

Throughout the Demonica series Hades has made some very memorable appearances.  He has captured the readers attention with his skin tight leather pants and blue mohawk.  He comes across as a frightening enigma that no one wants to piss off.  At the same time we get a glimpse that he can be a jovial kind of guy.  So what is his real story?  Who is Hades?

Hades is the jailor of the Underworld.  He is a ruthless warden that answers to no one except his boss Azagoth ( the Grim Reaper).  He is as much a prisoner of his world as he is a Warden.  His only reprieves are his regular check ins with the boss or the sporadic time off hours he is granted on rare occasions.  He’s learn to live with hellish world he commands.  He’s adjusted to the discomforts that only can be found in hell.  The only thing he looks forward to is the weekly episodes of The Walking Dead or the glimpses he catches of the fallen angel Cat when he visits his boss.  This fallen angel fuels the fires of his soul and ignites all of his fantasies.

Cat is a fallen angel.  She was sent to Sheoul-gra for her punishment for conspiring with Gethel to bring the Apocalypse forth.  She is the servant to  Azagoth and his lady love Lilliana.  Her new world isn’t too bad but it isn’t too good either.  She is a bit of a klutz and seems to make mistakes no matter what realm she is in.  She is constantly making blunders that even Azagoth notices.  It’s a good thing that Lilliana really likes her a lot.

When Cat makes the biggest blunder of all and accidentally lets some souls into  Sheoul-gra all hell breaks loose ( literally).  She must enter Sheoul-gra and right her wrong before Azagoth finds out.  Fallen angels are not permitted in Sheoul-gra.  She has not only blundered by letting undesignated souls in, she has turned hell into an even more dangerous place.

Together Hades and Cat will have to battle the 5 rings of hell and save the world.  They have to win this battle before Azagoth finds out.  Their lives are on the line.  To make matters worse, Hades and Cat are falling in love with each other.  This relationship is forbidden.  It is worse than Adam and Eve eating the apple in the Garden of Eden.  The Grim Reaper is not going to be happy.

Once again Larissa Ione added another exciting red hot romance in the Demonica world.  It was fun, entertaining, action packed, and romantic.  I would highly recommend this book.

I highly recommend reading the entire Demonica series before embarking on this book.  The dynamics of this fictional world are multi dimensional.  Many of the characters in this book are a bit hard to grasp if you are new to the series.  The glossary at the front of this book does help the reader understand the Demonica world a little better but does not give enough of this series background.  Even though I am a seasoned reader of this series and have read every book, I still had to reference the glossary while reading this novella.

Goosebumps dot my arms as I become highly aware that there’s not a single drop of noise within earshot. Not even our shoes hitting the dirt make a sound. I want to ask Novela if she notices it, but I don’t want to risk upsetting her more than she is. I try to keep it to myself but then I hear the soft pitter-patter of light footsteps rushing up behind us.

Do you hear us? Do you hear us?

Welcome back. Welcome back.

We’ve been waiting for you, Mila.

Our gazes lock and without looking back, Novela and I take off in a mad sprint down the road

“Oh my God, we’re going to die,” she pants as she struggles desperately to keep up with me.

“We’re not going to die.” I gasp for air as I push my legs harder than I ever have before.

I don’t know what’s behind us. If it’s following us. What it wants. But as we near the edge of town, I dare look back over my shoulder and instantly wish I wouldn’t have. Because standing in the darkness of the road, watching us from a distance, is a lofty figure.

Michel’s Review

If you are looking for a fast paced, high octane romantic suspense book mixed with a hint of the paranormal, Retribution is the book you want to pick up.  Both of the leading characters have physic kind of gifts.  How they use they gifts will have the reader chilled to the bone one moment and fanning themselves the next moment.

Nika and Alena Brennan are on a mission.  They are out for retribution for their parents deaths when they were young children.  Although they witnessed the murders, they have been in protective custody most of their lives.  Their identities have changed.  Their history has been changed.  One has developed a physic gift.  Now the sisters are out for revenge.  They will use their brains, their knowledge of the spy world, and the physic gifts to kill the three men that ruined their lives. Two down and one to go.  They are after the Russian crime boss that is responsible for it all.  They will use his son and his connections to complete their final execution.  One sister is completely driven and the other sister is trying to protect her.

Declan Gallagher has been secretly hired by the FBI director to stop the Brennan sisters from their final murder.  If these sisters murder this man the FBI will lose vital information on world wide  organizations known for drug trafficking, illegal gun trade, and human trafficking.  Declan has to go undercover and protect the son that has been targeted as a means to their intended victim.  Declan has a special gift.  He has the ability to enter peoples dreams and obtain information.  He will use his ability to stop the Brennan sisters.

When Declan and Nika meet in the dream world the sexual sparks ignite.  Their erotic encounters are sizzling hot.  They can communicate with their bodies in their dreams.  What Declan didn’t count on was how powerful Nika’s physic abilities are.  No one should remember when he invades their dreams.  Nika not only remembers their encounters, she questions his motivations and abilities.

The mission the Brennan sisters embarked on will change.  Their lives will be the ones in danger.  There are traitors in the midst of them.  There are unseen enemies.  There are opportunities to find something better in life than revenge.  There are new ways to use their talents.  If they can stay alive long enough to find out what direction their lives should go.

I could not put this book down.  The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat.  The erotic dreams between Nika and Declan had me swooning.  The build up of their relationship and revelations kept me guessing.  Their physic gifts had me in awe.

Read Retribution.  It will not disappoint!

“Don’t do it,” a deep male voice commands.

A whisper of a breeze caresses my cheek. With a frustrated sigh, I lower my foot and drag my gaze from the murky, dark water that beckons me with its siren’s song. Glaring at the unwelcome intruder, I dash the tears from my cheeks. He stands in the shadow, and all I can make out is that he’s tall with broad shoulders. Striding toward me, hands in his pockets, he starts whistling. The thought occurs to me I should be scared and run, but it’s as if I’m glued to the spot. As he comes into the light, I see he’s a priest. But he doesn’t look like any priest I’ve ever known. This guy is Hollywood gorgeous. Under the dim light, he appears almost incandescent and his emerald eyes seem lit from within. Their intensity burns a hole into my paper-thin bravado, which slips away and disappears like ashes in the wind.

Dammit, I’d just worked up the courage to follow through with my plan to leave this nightmare behind, and this stranger has interrupted, dragging me back to my personal hell on earth.

Excerpt

Declan’s first thought was to run straight toward the force attacking from the north, which was most likely where he’d find their leader. Take him out and the rest of the men would be lost.

But Declan couldn’t do what his gut and his training shouted at him to do. He had to protect Kendra and get her the hell out of there.

He jumped up, scooped Kendra into his arms, and ran in the only direction that seemed to be clear to them—south. He hated being herded anywhere, but it was the best option available.

Behind him, he heard Tate, Brent, and Gavin trying to get their ragtag group to work together in an organized retreat. Declan had a pretty good sense of the numbers they were up against. If Tate couldn’t make that happen, there was a good possibility no one was going to make it out of this jungle alive.

“What happened?” Kendra asked.

Declan expected her to be freaking out or shouting for him to put her down. But instead she was holding on tightly while trying to see over his shoulder. Hell, she was probably calmer than most of the men around them.

“Whoever has been shadowing us all day finally decided it was time to start the ambush.”

He jumped a small stream. Carrying Kendra, his weapon, and his rucksack, he couldn’t move as fast as he normally would, but he still could have outrun the others if he wanted to. But running off into the jungle wouldn’t help keep her safe. Even now, he could hear the bad guys sprinting hard to get ahead of them, repositioning themselves to keep the jaws of the ambush clamped closed.

Excerpts

SEDUCE ME

by J. Kennner

I’m tapping the end of my pencil against the overfull sheet–because despite owning my own web and mobile app development company, I print my schedule every morning–when Damien approaches.

I know that he is there even though he has yet to say a word. Perhaps I heard his bare feet on the wooden floor. Perhaps the air shifted as he passed. Or perhaps he is simply Damien Stark, and I could no more fail to notice his presence than I could miss a tidal wave.

But more likely, I think it is because he has so thoroughly claimed me that there is never a time when I am not blissfully and totally aware of him.

I am in the library on the mezzanine of the exceptional Malibu house that was still under construction when I first started dating Damien. Now it is our home, and each place within these walls is precious to me. I’m at the desk near the section where Damien has shelved his sci-fi/fantasy collection, with tattered paperbacks tucked in with pristine, signed first editions. A few feet away, the newest addition to our household is curled up into a tiny ball of orange fluff in one of the comfy leather chairs.

This is Damien’s favorite place to work, and that’s part of why I come here almost every morning–I like to feel close to him.

Right now, I feel very close indeed.

“You’re amazing, you know.” I speak without turning around, then smile when I hear his soft chuckle behind me.

“Because I can sneak up on you?” This time I do hear his footsteps as he moves even closer.

“I knew you were there. By definition, that isn’t sneaking. Or, at least, it’s not successful sneaking.”

“You make a good point, Mrs. Stark.” His hands press gently on my shoulders, and I close my eyes, just soaking up the feel of him. It’s more potent than coffee, and if I could bottle this feeling, I’d be richer than my husband.

I haven’t yet turned to look at him, but I don’t need to. I’ve long ago memorized every delicious inch of him. His raven-black hair, so familiar to my fingers. His perfectly sculpted face, softened by the slightest shadow of beard stubble. His lean, well-muscled athlete’s body that looks equally exceptional in jeans or a tux. And, of course, his dual-colored eyes that can look right to my core and see all my secrets.

It is not yet seven on a Friday morning and though I’m still in my typical morning uniform of a T-shirt and baggy shorts, I know that he is already dressed. I inhale, confirming that assumption. I smell the soap from his shower. The hint of musk from the cologne I bought him in Paris on our honeymoon just a few months ago.

“So tell me, why am I amazing?”

“To answer that, I’d need Power Point, a projector, and at least two days.” I tilt my head back so that I can grin at him, and my heart skitters when I see his face, even more perfect then the picture I keep tucked away in my mind. “But in this particular instance, I was referring to your time management skills.” Damien accomplishes more in a day than most people do in a year. Frankly, I think it’s highly likely that superpowers are involved.

“Busy day?”

“By human standards. For you, it’s probably a cakewalk. For me, I’m going to have to do some juggling.”

I push the chair away from the desk and stand, then lean back so that I’m half-sitting on it, my rear pressed against the edge. Damien’s attention is entirely on my face, and there is such a look of hunger in his eyes that I have to smile. “Careful, or you’ll be late for work.”

“I find that’s one of the perks of running my own company. There’s no one to slap my hand when I break the rules.”

I hear the thread of playfulness in his voice and match it. “Do you break the rules often, Mr. Stark?”

He lifts his hand, then brushes my hair away from my neck so that his fingertips can stroke my tender skin, then trace down along my collarbone. “As often as possible,” he says.

INDECISION

By: Elisabeth Grace

I dropped my hands to my side. “Are you arresting me?” I asked, dumbfounded.

“Relax. I’m going to pat you down to make sure you don’t have anything I need to be concerned about and then I’m going to conduct the sobriety test.”

Un-fucking-believable. This was unreal. Never in my life. I held my tongue as I stomped over to the trunk, faced it, and placed my palms on the hot metal.

“Is there anything on you I should know about? Any drugs, needles, paraphernalia?” he asked in a way that indicated he’d administered one of these on more than a few occasions.

“Of course not,” I clipped.

He came to stand behind me. I couldn’t see him, but his presence this close to me was like a magnet drawing me to him, and I found myself wanting to back up into his hard body.

He crouched down and why, oh why couldn’t I get the image of him putting his face between my legs out of my head? Like I’d let this asshole touch me. When his hands circled my ankle, I sucked in a breath and fought the urge to bring my feet together to ease the ache in my center.

He slid his hands up my leg and I swore I heard a small groan escape his lips. My skin was tingling with awareness as his warm hands passed over me. Stopping short of the V of my thighs, he repeated the action on my other leg, moving just as slowly from the bottom to the top.

His hands then landed on my bare skin at my waist, and the sensation spread until it concentrated in my core. As his hands slid up to just below my breasts, I heard his breathing grow ragged behind me, and I had to fight the urge to press back into him.

Damn, what was wrong with me?

“Find what you’re looking for, officer?” I asked with way more huskiness and way less ire than I’d intended.

LUSCIOUS

By: Lexi Blake

MACON Excerpt

Macon watched the new girl. He couldn’t help himself. She was luscious. Like a chocolate soufflé. She would require very careful handling in order to bring her to fruition. One wrong move and a woman like that would fold, wilting or falling away, or simply telling him to fuck off.

He really didn’t want her to tell him to fuck off.

Ally. Allyson Jones. She had dark hair and a curvy figure that filled out her black slacks and white dress shirt in a way no one else on the waitstaff managed. She bent over, collecting the menus. That was the singular juiciest backside he’d ever seen. It was fucking spectacular, and he could feel his cock hardening.

It was not helpful to his current work situation, but he still couldn’t force his eyes to move. It was like they were laser focused on that lush ass.

He moved the pastry blender over and over, forcing the ingredients to mix into something new. Butter, flour, sugar, shortening, salt, and ice water. His perfect piecrust. Simple and yet so complex since he’d learned it required something beyond merely following the recipe. There was a harmony required most people never figured out, a certain Zen that came with giving over to the dish, allowing it to be what it would.

“Don’t let that sit too long.” Timothy Gage looked down his patrician nose at the bowl. “We have reservations for a hundred tonight. If that crust isn’t perfect, I’ll see you go back to washing dishes.”

Macon took a deep breath and forced himself not to correct his obnoxiously pretentious boss. He’d never washed dishes. When he’d been hired at Top, he’d been brought in as a garde-manger, prepping salads and helping with small plates. That had lasted two weeks. Then one day the chef’s brother had walked in. Ian Taggart was a massive slab of muscle with a taste for lemons. Timothy didn’t do requests. He was an artiste, or at least that’s what he called himself. He was mostly an asshole who took himself way too seriously. Sean Taggart, the man who owned Top, had tried to talk his brother into being reasonable. Macon had quickly made a lemon pudding.

He’d moved from salads to assistant pastry chef that day, and he was also Big Tag’s hookup. The big guy’s wife had been pregnant at the time and mad about coconut. He’d made coconut cookies, cream pies, and cakes for the lovely Charlotte.

It was good to be needed. It was good to make something that made someone else happy.

“That is one hot piece of ass.” Timothy leaned against the wall, his eyes on Ally.

There were times he really didn’t like the man. All the time, really. He was full of himself, but he was also trained by some super-fancy school in Paris. Sean had introduced him as a big deal and explained that Macon could learn a lot from him. So far he’d really learned that Timothy liked to duck work and take all the credit, and he drank on the job.

Ally looked up and her dark eyes caught on his. He hoped he wasn’t staring like a crazy stalker guy, but it was hard to look away. She smiled and joked and he could still feel the aura of loss that surrounded her. He wanted to know what made her seem so sad at times, like there was a wall between her and the world. He wanted to tell her she didn’t need that wall. It was a stupid idea. He couldn’t take care of himself much less anyone else, so he’d kept his distance.

Still, since the moment she’d walked through the doors, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about her.

ALLY EXCERPT

Ally dropped off the new menus. They changed nightly because Sean Taggart liked to use fresh ingredients. Top was farm to table. He negotiated with local farms for whatever he could, and as far as Ally could tell he was one hell of a chef. She’d been raised on whatever her mom had a coupon for, but she’d discovered she really liked sea bass and polenta, and god she could eat risotto all day.

And Macon’s pastries. Oh, Timothy the Ass took credit, but she watched Macon work. Macon made the fluffiest crust, the richest chocolate mousse.

He was also the damn dreamiest man she’d ever seen, and she wasn’t a woman who used the word dreamiest lightly.

In the few weeks she’d worked at Top, she would swear she’d gained ten pounds. After service was over, staff got to eat. She’d had some of the best food of her life here. She’d also had some really good times. She’d thought she only ever fit in with her mom and Ronnie, but this place was starting to feel like home.

“Hey, you. I heard we’re going to Deep Ellum after work tonight.” Deena took the menus and placed them in the basket by the hostess station. She was an infinitely competent woman in her early thirties, with a ready smile and a warm personality. She kept the front of house running like clockwork. “Tell me you’re coming with us. We need to dance.”

Oddly, the idea of going clubbing held no appeal. She was young and single and had no ties to anyone, and yet all she wanted to do was have a place to go to with a TV and a warm bed and a Macon Miles to cuddle up against.

Damn it. She couldn’t think that way. Macon was the target. Macon was the only one who could tell her what really happened to her brother. The report didn’t make sense. She knew the Army could cover up deaths, and she was sure that was what happened with Ronnie.

Had Macon killed her brother? Somehow she didn’t think so. She certainly didn’t want to believe it. She’d walked into Top with the full intention of confronting him. She’d meant to sit down with Macon and force him to talk to her. Then she’d actually seen him. When she’d knocked on the back door, he’d opened it. He’d wiped his hands on his apron and given her the sweetest smile she’d ever seen, and when he’d asked what she needed her brain and her mouth hadn’t worked at all in sync. She’d stumbled and told him she was looking for a job, and she’d started waiting tables that night.

How would he feel if he knew she had an ulterior motive? She promised herself every single night that she was going to tell him the truth, and every night she put it off. Now she was in too deep. She was caught in a trap of her own making.

WAITING FOR YOU (Sparks in Texas)

Mari Carr

Sydney stood next to Gran, who was flanked by Julian on the right. The three of them were standing at the international arrivals gate, grinning like fools as they held the banner Sydney had made. Chas’ flight had landed and her heart was racing a million miles an hour. She’d seen him just a few months earlier over the holidays. They’d exchanged small gifts and consumed a bottle of eggnog together. Chas had even told her a little bit about two friends he’d lost in combat, the story breaking her heart.

Chas had ended up sleeping on her couch that night, while she’d tossed and turned in her bedroom, fighting the urge to go out and comfort him. However, there had been something in his eyes—some dark, unfamiliar sadness—that had stopped her, that had told her to keep her distance.

Several more people walked through the gate. Sydney watched as relatives reunited with hugs, laughter and sometimes tears. She loved coming to the airport, loved the energy and the atmosphere, the hustle and bustle. It was a hotbed of emotions unlike any other place.

Gran captured her attention with a nudge of the elbow. “There he is.”

Chas strolled through the doors in jeans and a t-shirt. It would seem so weird to see him dressed in civilian clothing rather than his fatigues from now on, and she wondered if he’d give up the crew cut he’d kept for so many years and return to the longer style of his youth. He looked around the area, searching for them. Sydney smiled and waved when his eyes met hers.

Chas walked faster then, laughing when he read their banner. Sydney took it from Julian and Gran, stepping back so that Chas could greet his family.

She was shocked when he bypassed both of them and walked right up to her. He tugged the banner out of her hands and dropped it to the floor a split second before he grabbed her in his embrace and kissed her.

His mouth was demanding, forcing her lips apart so he could stroke her tongue with his. Sydney fought off a wave of dizziness and disbelief. Even a bit of embarrassment when she recalled his grandmother was standing less than five feet away from them. She put her hands on his shoulders, intent on pushing him away, but Chas only gripped her tighter, one of his hands rising to cup the back of her neck, his fingers lightly stroking the sensitive skin there.

She was a goner. Sydney stopped giving a shit who was there and what they were seeing. Chas was home. And he was kissing her.

Twelve years melted away into a haze of nothingness. He was home. Finally.

PERFECTLY RECKLESS

By Megan Hart

Maura pushed up on her elbow to look down at him. There might come a time when she was no longer overcome with love at the sight of his face, or when her love might become something soft and faded and worn. But to stop loving him? Impossible.

“How would I live,” she murmured, “without my Ian?”

Tenderly, she stroked the hair from his forehead and kissed his mouth. He woke with a start, looking guilty. Maura sat, thinking she should start looking for her clothes. She was getting a chill.

Ian sat, too, saying nothing as she pulled on her panties and bra, then her t-shirt. She watched him carefully as she turned her jeans right-side out, but didn’t put them on. She knelt beside him.

“Ian?”

“It’s getting late,” he said. “We should go to bed.”

She’d never been in his bedroom, though she’d seen it often enough in their video chats. The easy compatibility they’d shared while making dinner and the synchronicity of their lovemaking stalled here. Ian pulled a pair of boxers and a t-shirt from a drawer to give her.

“You can use the bathroom first,” he offered. “Umm…I have an extra toothbrush for you.”

In bed, she curled on her side, facing out. Ian lay on his back beside her. The soft, slow rasp of his breathing soothed her, but she couldn’t sleep. All this time, and they’d only slept together once. She didn’t know if he liked to be cuddled or preferred his space; she didn’t know if he would mind if she tossed and turned for a few minutes while she tried to get comfortable with a pillow she wasn’t used to.

“Are you sleeping?” His whisper eased over her in the darkness, so quiet it made her smile because he was clearly trying not to wake her, if she was.

“No.”

The bed shook as he moved closer to her, pulling her against him. His breath warmed her neck. His hand fit naturally just below her breasts.

“It will be okay, Ian,” Maura said sleepily, relaxing against him. “Everything will be okay.”

But it wasn’t. She fell asleep with his arms around her and woke when he moved away from her. When he swung his legs over the edge of the bed, she sat up too.

“Don’t do this,” she said. The only light came from the moon shining through the window. It made him a shadow, indistinguishable from all the others except that he moved and the others stayed still. “Go to sleep.”

“I can’t sleep.”

She scooted closer to him. He didn’t cringe from her touch when she curved her body around his and put her chin on his shoulder. She put her arms loosely around him, linking her fingers at his chest. She gave him her warmth and the beat of her heart. According to George Orwell in 1984, if you loved someone, that’s what you gave him even when you had nothing else. Love.

Maura gave Ian her love, and somehow, it wasn’t enough.

“It’s just that…I’d rather it end now than later.”

Maura sighed, weary, but giving him the room to say what he needed to say. “Why?”

“So I can be ready for it.”

“Are you ready for it?” She asked a little too harshly. “Is that what you want, Ian? For me to go, now. For this all to just…end?”

“Before it leaves scars,” Ian said in a low voice.

Maura snorted softly against him and kissed the back of his neck. “Too late, sweetheart. Way too late for that.”

He half-turned. He could’ve kissed her mouth, had he twisted just a little more, but she didn’t press forward. “I’ve never felt this way about anyone. That’s all. I just don’t think I can do it.”

You’re doing it, she wanted to say. You’ve already done it.

Instead, she withdrew from him. Quietly, without fanfare, she gathered her clothes and stripped out of his. She dressed and pulled her hair up again. Ian sat on the bed, watching her, though how much he could see in the dark she didn’t know. When she’d finished, Maura went to him. She took his face in her hands and tipped it up so he had to look at her. There was enough light for that, at least.

“I love you,” she told him. “But you’re right. Eventually, that leaf has to let go.”

“I’m sorry, Maura.”

“Me too.” She thought about kissing him, this her last chance, and couldn’t bring herself to do more than brush her lips on his. Straightening, she let go of him. “I’ll let myself out.”

“I’ll walk you –”

“No,” she told him, too sharply. Too fierce. “I don’t want you to.”

She couldn’t let him. She would break down and he would see it, and she’d be ashamed. Or worse, she would cling to him, weeping and begging. She would lose herself utterly in this grief already threatening to claw its way up her throat and out her mouth in wails and cries.

No. She would walk herself to the door and let herself out, and she would get in her car and drive herself home. There she might break down, in the safety of her own shower where she could scream and pound her fists. But not here.

In his kitchen though, as she gathered her keys, Maura paused to write a note. Simple. One sentence. She didn’t sign her name.

She left it on the table, and she left him.

RED HOT NIGHTS

By: Karen Erickson

“Hmm, what are you wearing?”

Reagan smiled, slipping a bracelet onto her wrist before she lifted her gaze to the bathroom mirror. She watched as Declan approached and stopped just behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist, his hands resting lightly on her stomach as his gaze met hers in the reflection. “You like my dress?”

“I love it.” He stepped away from her, his hands resting on her hips, his mouth falling into a frown as he looked at her back. “But it’s practically indecent.”

“Isn’t it great? Sexy and demure in the front, totally naughty in the back.” She added a few more bracelets to her wrist and turned, sad when Declan’s hands fell from her hips. She saw the scowl on his handsome face, his eyebrows drawn together as he studied her, and she just knew… “You don’t like it.”

He tilted his head, still contemplating her—and the dress. It was white, with a soft floral print and a just-above-the-knee-length skirt that floated around her legs when she moved. The top tied around her neck in a halter style that covered her entire chest, not a hint of cleavage in sight.

But like she said to her boyfriend, Declan Carter—the hottest young actor today, making a terrific comeback with the newest, and most serious, film he’d ever made—it was the back that made the dress turn sexy. It dipped low, past her waist, exposing her shoulders and back completely. She loved it.

From the expression on his face alone, it looked like Declan hated it.

“I do like it,” he finally said. “Turn around again.”

She did as he asked, moving slowly, wanting him to get a good look it. Tonight was important to him—and her. His movie was premiering and she wanted to look pretty. Sophisticated. Not like the emergency room nurse she normally was, in her turquoise-green scrubs, hair scraped back into a no-nonsense ponytail, not a lick of makeup on her face beyond the occasional lip balm she slicked on when she thought of it.

Tonight, she went all out, just for Declan. Got her hair trimmed and blown out at an exclusive salon in Beverly Hills that Declan’s assistant James—who also happened to be her friend and the one who got them together in the first place—recommended to her. Was wearing a designer gown, again picked out by both her and James, who had better taste than she did. Talk about a surreal shopping trip. The gowns were all brought to her at Declan’s house and she didn’t have to make a purchase. The designers actually wanted her to wear them for the exposure—being seen on Declan Carter’s arm had its perks, most definitely.

She’d been pampered for the rest of the afternoon, again at Declan’s house. The cosmetics were applied by a professional makeup artist. Jewelry picked out to complement the dress and the highest stilettos Reagan could muster. She thought she looked pretty damn good.

Though she knew she had to up her game—and in a big way—if she was going to accompany her boyfriend to his freaking movie premiere. Famous people would be in attendance tonight, including the actors Declan made the movie with. Other stars and celebrities would be there too, all of them glitzed up beyond belief, because that was their job.

Reagan could never admit she was afraid she couldn’t hold her own among the young and gorgeous and famous. She was a regular person, not a movie star. Those types lived and breathed looking good for the camera. They worked out three hours a day, had personal chefs make them meals with hardly any calories, and they always wore the trendiest clothes and carried the most expensive bags.

She, on the other hand, had a small Coach purse her mom gave her for graduating nursing school. Mom claimed she picked it up at the factory outlet, and Reagan loved it, but it was no Christian Dior bag worth five thousand dollars.

Because yep, Declan’s stylist owned a five-thousand-dollar Dior bag which Reagan thought was both ridiculous and totally impractical. Though secretly, she coveted that bag. It was beautiful. And almost six months worth of rental payments, so she should let that dream die.

“You’re so exposed,” Declan finally said, worry clouding his eyes. “If it was just you and I going out, that would be one thing, but…”

“Do I look that bad?” she interrupted, feeling awful. Maybe she should change. But she had no other options. Nothing as gorgeous as the dress she wore, and certainly nothing designer. Maybe she could call Sandi. The stylist had helped her so much, and she knew Sandi would work her hardest to come up with another option. She probably had an entire rack at her studio, or even better, stashed in the trunk of her car for emergencies just like this.

“You don’t look bad.” Declan pulled her to him, his hands going to her lower back, his warm fingers seeming to brand her bare skin. She shivered at his touch. “You look amazing. My problem is, I don’t want every asshole at that premiere ogling my hot girlfriend.”

She burst out laughing, relief flooding her. He was so brutally honest sometimes. It was one of her favorite qualities about him. “Are you saying you’re jealous?” she teased.

By Mari Carr

How do you protect the woman you love…when the greatest danger is sleeping in her bed?

Sydney Sparks can’t remember a time when Chas wasn’t part of her life—from childhood playmates, to high-school sweethearts, to long-distance friends. The second he stepped off the plane and locked gazes with Sydney, Chas refused to waste a minute more on their “just friends” status quo. Together again, it feels as if they were never apart, the love they’d shared as innocent teens now vastly more intense as adults—with a sexual hunger to match.

However, despite his newfound happiness, Chas can’t seem to shake the memories of his tours in the Middle East, of the firefights, the killing…the deaths of his friends. When the flashbacks grow stronger, Chas struggles to hide his increasing lack of control, terrified of losing everything he’d just regained—including Sydney.

SAVOR Excerpt:

Savor (The Empire Chronicles #4)

Alyssa Rose Ivy

Excerpt

“I’m glad you don’t want me dead.” He smirked. Even his smirk was sexy.

“I’d be on my own if you were.” I put my hands behind my head.

“And you don’t like being alone?” He studied me in the darkness. Sometimes I wished neither of us had night vision. It left you so naked, never having an opportunity to hide.

“I do most of the time.”

“But not always?” His eyes raked over my body. The fact that he could make such a platonic conversation feel sexual gave me even more reason to resist him.

“Why does it matter?” Often the best way to avoid a question is to ask your own.

“It matters because I asked it.” And there went his mouth again.

My annoyance gave me back my will power. “Put a shirt on.”

“Why?” He grinned. “Am I distracting you?”

“No, but we should go. The sun will be up soon enough.”

“Maybe I shouldn’t go with you.” He sat up, swinging his legs off the side of the bed.

“No way.” I moved to standing. “You’re not backing out.”

“Why do you care?” He stood with his back to me. “You can do this alone.”

“Of course I can.”

He turned to me. “Then why does it matter if I go my own way?” He pulled on his t-shirt, and a little part of me missed the view.

“Because we agreed to help each other out. I stick to my promises.” That was one of my good traits. The not so good traits weren’t worth reflecting on.

“Maybe I don’t.”

“You do.” I put a hand on my hip. I didn’t have time for Jared’s games.

“How do you know?”

“I just do.”

“You’re infuriating.”

I groaned. “And what are you?”

“Charming.”

If I’d had liquid in my mouth I would have spit it out. “Not exactly the word I’d use to describe you.”

“Says the girl begging me to stay with her.”

“I never begged.” I crossed my arms over my chest.

“Would you beg?” His grin was his undoing.

“Is that how you like it, Jared? With your women begging?”

“I wasn’t talking about how I like my women.”

“Are you sure about that?” I grabbed my backpack and headed into the cabin’s small bathroom.

“Where are you going?”

I paused with my hand on the door. “To shower.”

Claudy Conn

However, my daughter lectured me and said that I should write about myself like I write my stories—so here goes…

While I have a fanciful imagination, I am a Capricorn—‘sure and steady’, and the obvious conflict leaves me jumbled. I have a computer, yes (invaluable), but I still jot down ideas on a scrap piece of paper, or a napkin in a restaurant. My imagination follows me wherever we go and sees so much more than meets the eye, and very often my husband will ask, ‘where are you now, baby?’

My dad was the one who clicked into my brain early on, and opened my mind to a world where a girl/woman could be so much more than ‘pretty in pink’. He told me to soar, and soaring for me, was writing.

We love horses and riding and when we migrated from New York to North Carolina we brought our barn with us—and yes, I’d rather muck out a stall than clean a house! My Irish, blue-eyed husband had to have a wolf and so we brought in our little hybrid wolf pup to our home. She is ¾ wolf/ ¼ German shepherd named Cherokee. Her 3 yr. old son (Rocky) is huge and eats everything and anything he can find and weighs more than 170 pounds!

Ireland and Scotland gave us the Fae and the Druids. In Ireland you can still visit the ‘Faery Mounds’. Think of the possibilities. I have and I’d love for you to join me as I explore them. So then, come with me and let’s see where we can go…

I am a sarcastic, southern woman that would rather spend all day laughing than a minute crying. I have 2 of the most amazing daughters ever created, a menagerie of animals and a voracious appetite for reading. I decided to write the stories running through my brain and am having an absolute blast!! I read my first book, Dr Suess’ Cat in The Hat, by myself at 4 and have been hooked ever since.

I believe a good book along with shoes, makeup and purses will never let a girl down. I know for a fact that all heroes inf all the books I have ever read or will ever write pale in comparison to my hero, my dad! I am a sucker for a happy ending and love some hot sweaty sex with a healthy dose of romance.

I am still working on my story but can guarantee you that it will contain as love and laughter as I can cram into it!!!!! Dare to Dream! Have the Strength to Try EVERYTHING! Never Look Back!

I like gravy.

This has nothing to do with the rest of my bio, but I thought you ought to know.

About the writing thing…

I wrote my first play when I was six and made my brothers perform it for my parents. I charged gum wrappers for admission (a steal, in my opinion, considering I had handed out the gum wrappers ahead of time). While I seriously doubt you’ll be seeing any of my formative work on Broadway anytime soon, I can credit these early experiments with the first of many important lessons I learned about writing: no matter how brilliant your manuscript is, some kid can go streaking butt-ass nekkid across the living room, and totally undermine your vision.

Everyone watches the naked kid because running across the living room with your cheeks flapping in the breeze is friggin’ hilarious.

Cue the lightbulb moment. People like funny stuff!

I never quite gave up on the writing thing, even as I tried my hand at being a dusty academic turned Executive Assistant (they paid me to nag! How cool is that?), but in those quiet moments when expense reports had been filed and to-do items checked off, the funny people in my head kept talking to me.

Yes, I know they have medication for that. It’s called vodka.

Since they discourage drinking at work, I started writing instead. What came out was an amalgamation (vocabulary!) of all the things I love: funny stuff, art, psychology, food, people, and paranormal critters!

Et voila! The Case Files of Dr. Matilda Schmidt, Paranormal Psychologist were born.

When I’m not sitting in my office watching cat videos and pretending to write, I like cooking, knitting (badly), and reading anything that makes me laugh (like my bank statements).

I live in Colorado with my brilliant husband and three surly cats.

Happy Release Day + First Chapter Reveal: His Perfect Wolf by Elle Boon

HisPerfectWolf_LRG

 Synopsis

Niall is alpha of the Mystic Wolves. His life revolved around protecting his pack and son Nolan. He planned to do this alone until finding an injured woman who stirred more than just his lust.

When Alaina Strop woke in the tattooed arms of a strange wolf shifter, all she could think of was getting closer. Having no memory was a small thing compared to the feelings she had for the growling man. Before she could give her mind and body to him, she needed to find out who she was, and be sure she didn’t belong to another. Though deep in her soul, she knew she was Nialls.

Danger came to Mystic as Alaina’s memory returned and her father came to claim her for another wolf. But Niall, the big bad alpha, had found his perfect wolf, and wasn’t about to let her go, no matter the cost.

The need to sink into her heat inflamed him. The dirty things he imagined doing to her, a virgin up until recently should be illegal.

“You are going to drive me insane. You know that, don’t you?” Niall’s mouth covered hers, taking instead of asking.

“Don’t look at me like that or I’ll have you and me both stripped in less than sixty seconds.” Niall growled.

Chapter One

“Dad, can I stay all weekend with grandma and grandpa?” Nolan asked.

Niall smiled down at his seven year old son, seeing his wife’s eyes looking up at him. It took monumental effort not to scoop up his son and hug him tight, never wanting to let go. When they’d lost Emma, Nolan had been a baby. Even almost seven years later, Niall still missed her like it was yesterday. “Don’t you want to spend the weekend with your old man?”

Nolan rolled his eyes. “Me and grandpa are going to campout and fish and grandma is coming along to make sure we don’t get into trouble. Besides, you have to work while Uncle Zay spends the weekend with Cora.”

“Grab your bag. I’m assuming you packed enough for the entire weekend?”

Nolan nodded, showing Niall that his backpack was indeed bulging. “I’m ready when you are, Dad.”

Grabbing his son up and over his shoulder, they headed to his bike parked out in front of their log home. Being the alpha of the Mystic Wolves, he had prime position at the end of the cul-de-sac, each home having anywhere from one to three acres, or more. He had over ten, but the pack had hundreds of acres outside of Sturgis. The Glades, his in-laws, lived within three miles and had several acres. Emerson, the old alpha, had stepped down when Niall mated his daughter, Emma. He handed Nolan his helmet, making sure it was on properly before putting on his own skull cap.

With his son’s little arms wrapped snuggly around him, Niall made the short trip to the Glades residence. By the time he was ready to leave his son with Emerson and Payton, a plan was formed in his mind. He swung his leg over the seat, his leathers squeaked as he straddled his Harley. Nolan and the Glades waved from the porch, he smiled at the excitement shining in his son’s brown eyes as he revved the bike before taking off at a sedate pace.

Stopping at the end of the road, he looked up at the woods leading to the ski lodge, a mysterious scent teased his nostrils, making his wolf rise up and take notice. The lodge was always flooded with want to be ski bunnies in winter, inevitably they found their way down the mountain into Sturgis and their bar, Chaps. He and his brother Zayn, along with the rest of the wolves, then had to deal with their shit. It was good for business, so they put up with it, but it was a pain in the ass. Niall shook off the urge to head north, and pointed the bike down toward Sturgis and Chaps.

He’d find himself a mate, and Nolan a mother, that was his great plan. He thought back to the conversation he’d had with Emerson. Since he and Zayn’s parents were so far away, he looked to Emerson and Payton as surrogate parents. Emerson had told Niall, according to Payton’s dreams, that change was coming and that they understood his need for a new mate, but they didn’t understand. He missed his wife and didn’t expect to find another truemate. Hell, if a wolf was lucky they’d find one truemate, but many settled. He was a man, a wolf who needed a mate, and a mother for Nolan. Niall knew he was more than blessed when he found Emma and that he wouldn’t find that again, but he would settle for companionship, sex and a mother for his son. Niall kept his thoughts to himself, the old alpha still believed in love.

Emerson still teared up when he spoke of Emma, he said that Payton still cried at night, though she tried to hide her sorrow from her husband. Niall wasn’t the only one who still suffered.

When he’d looked into the wise eyes of the older man in the kitchen, with pictures of his dead mate hung all around, Niall had made a decision. He was a thirty-seven year old man with a lot of years ahead of him. He hadn’t been a monk for the last six years, not by a long shot. However, he hadn’t looked for anyone to fill his bed permanently. Truth be told, he’d not had any woman in his and Emma’s bed. He wasn’t sure he could let another woman sleep in the same place he’d made love to his wife. Niall looked at the bleak years ahead if he didn’t make some changes. Nobody could replace Emma. Not in his heart, but a bed was just a place to lay your head and now it would be a place he fucked. Niall was smart enough not to tell a woman that though.

Emerson had known what Niall was thinking and tried to talk him out of it. Even though he valued the older man’s opinion, in this instance he didn’t think Emerson had a clue. His wife was alive and healthy, while Niall’s was not.

Niall opened up the throttle on the bike. The hour drive was giving him time to ponder how to go about getting a mate and mother. He didn’t want a tiny petite thing like his Emma, nor did he want someone like her. A blonde with big boobs and no brain would work for him, but not Nolan. Maybe he’d meet her at the bar tonight, or at least find someone to take the edge off his needs.

* * * *

“What do you mean he’s found a mate for me? Like I need him to find me a husband, Mom. This is not the…the Victorian age, where the father marries off his girls.” Alaina Strop paced in front of the fireplace mantel. Her mother, Adalynn, sat with her legs crossed, looking very much the lady of the manor, but anxiety shown in her chocolate brown eyes.

“Baby, you know how your dad worries about you. Well, after that boy held you at gun point, along with your students, he decided you needed a mate. The council agreed and if it gets you home, then I’m sorry, sweetie, but I agree. You could’ve been killed.”

Alaina narrowed her eyes, horrified to hear her own mother agreeing with the archaic dealings of her dad. “Mother, I’m a twenty-five year old woman for crying out loud. I came home because I took a leave of absence after that incident.” Alaina had to take a breath.

Nightmares still plagued her of that day. She’d always wished she could shift, but being part fey and part shifter, she had a little of both her parents. Had she not been in a room filled with thirty, sixteen and seventeen year old, students she could have used her abilities to disarm him, maybe. Instead, she was stuck with a maniac waving a gun around for hours, until he grabbed her by the throat and stuck the gun to her temple. He’d already killed several students in the library before he’d locked himself in her computer lab, bent on exacting revenge on whoever had posted an anonymous letter about him.

Adalynn pointed her finger. “See, you can’t even talk about it without turning white. Your dad has found a nice wolf who doesn’t care that you can’t shift.”

Her mother’s words brought her back from the past. “Oh, he doesn’t mind, does he? How nice.” Alaina turned her back on her mom, knowing she’d pissed her off and not caring. Most who were mated with a wolf could be turned, but with her they didn’t know what the outcome would be. The familiar mental intrusion she usually welcomed from her mother trying to make her understand only pissed her off more. “Mother, can you hear what you’re saying? There is not a wolf here in the Cascades that I want to marry, let alone mate with. You do know what mating entails right? What if his truemate comes around? Am I supposed to just stand aside, and be oh so understanding then?”

Adalynn stood. Alaina was always amazed at how much they looked alike. Her mother kept her dark brown hair shoulder length, and was a couple inches shorter at five feet five inches, while Alaina topped out at five foot seven. They both had dark brown eyes, and her mother was still slim and curvy.

“That is hardly going to happen Lainey, but if it did we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

“Oh, my gawd. You sound like a Stepford Wife. What has happened to you since I’ve been gone? There will be no we, no bridge to cross, and no damn mating to a wolf I don’t know or love.”

The slamming of a door had them both turning to face the large man in the entry.

“I’m sorry to hear you say that, Alaina, but you don’t have a choice. You’re on pack land and pack law says your alpha has the right to say who marries whom. Since the last time I checked, I’m the alpha and your father, I’ve decided you will mate and marry the wolf of my choosing,” Roger Strop said.

Alaina held her breath at the deep baritone of her dad. He’d always been over protective of her, which was one of the reasons she’d gone away to college, and chosen a position half-way across the country after graduation. Seeing him exert his status and his anger toward her, she held her breath. He was never happy with anything she’d done as a child. He’d wanted a son, and since she was a girl, that was one check against her. She couldn’t shift, two checks. The list kept getting longer as she got older and didn’t fit into his role of the perfect daughter.

“Father, I’m sorry, but that is crazy. I came home to see you and Mom. Not get married off to some stranger. I have a job, a life back in Baltimore with people who are expecting me to return.”

Her father’s piercing blue eyes drilled her with his alpha stare. “I don’t give a flying fuck if the President of the United fucking States is expecting you for dinner at the White House. My land, my pack, my rules. You will be mated, married, and out of my family in forty-eight hours.”

She flinched at each of his words, when the last sentence penetrated her brain. Out of the corner of her eye she could see her mother pleading with her eyes. Alaina opened her mind to let her mother in on their private path. Another mark against her in her father’s mind was her ability to keep him out of her thoughts.

Don’t anger him, baby. Please just do what he says. You will still be my daughter. He is upset at me, not you. Adalynn’s voice sounded tear filled.

I don’t understand what is going on. Why is he pissed at you and taking it out on me?

Roger strode to Alaina, pinching her chin between his fingers. “Don’t fucking mindspeak in my presence, you two. Adalynn, get your ass in the kitchen and start lunch. I have plans to finish up, but I’ll be back in a couple hours. You both be on your best behavior this afternoon because I’m bringing your intended over.” He released her with a vicious shove.

Alaina was expecting the move and took a step back, using her fey abilities to go with his brute strength.

“You’ll learn your place with Rickard. He’ll make damn sure to train you proper.”

They watched Roger stomp from their home. Alaina could see her mother shaking in fear, and didn’t want to add to it with more questions. She knew her mother kept a journal that only another fey could read, and since she was the only other fey, Adalynn felt safe writing her thoughts down. Alaina made a motion with her hand indicating writing. Her mother gave her a brief nod before heading into the kitchen to begin cooking.

By the time she finished reading her mother’s journal that had been written just for her, she was shaking. Her father didn’t hate her just because she wasn’t a boy, but because she wasn’t his. He’d thought she wasn’t his, but didn’t have proof until the school shooting had made the national news. The man Adalynn had loved from her old pack in Mystic had seen the news, obviously put two and two together and came up with his daughter. Clearly, her dad wasn’t happy to have had his doubts confirmed. She could only imagine the type of man he wanted her to marry. “I’ll take that one-way ticket to hell, please. Not.” She closed her mother’s journal, putting it back in the bedside table where her mom kept it.

Mystic, South Dakota was where all of her maternal family lived, and Alaina always wondered why they never went back to visit. Now she knew the why. What she didn’t know was why her mom didn’t stay and marry her real dad? Why did she move halfway across the country with Roger, unless she wasn’t sure who was the father. Alaina could imagine the Maury show, with her mother sitting next to Roger and the paternity test coming up negative. Only when Maury did the reading and saying Roger, you are not the father, her dad, or the man she thought was her dad, would shift into his wolf and eat Maury before turning his focus on Adalynn. The image was so real Alaina shivered.

She hurried into her bedroom, seeing the bag she’d packed still sitting on the bed, she made a snap decision. Without wasting time, she grabbed it and her purse, opened her bedroom window and snuck out, like she’d done so many times as a teenager. Only then it was to go hang out with her friends, this time it was to escape her father.

Alaina pressed the unlock button, hoping none of the wolves with their super hearing were anywhere near. She held her breath as she tossed her bag in the passenger seat and climbed inside. The entire time she kept expecting her dad, or one of his enforcers, to come charging out of the woods and drag her in front of the council. When she was buckled up and the keys were in the ignition she exhaled and looked around before turning the key. Her cell phone was in her purse, but she wasn’t going to risk calling her mom until she was hours away.

Driving at a sedate pace, she pulled out of the driveway, keeping her eyes on the road in front of her and didn’t look back. Alaina thought about returning the rental to the airport, but was sure her da…Roger, would look there for her first. Once she hit the highway she’d make a plan as to where she would go. She had two weeks leave from work with pay, but she hadn’t planned anything beyond staying with her parents.

The sound of her phone ringing made her jerk the wheel, almost causing her to collide with another vehicle on the highway. Alaina realized she’d already begun driving east, and passed the turnoff to the airport. The ringtone was the one she’d assigned for her mother. Which meant her mom was checking in with her, or Roger was making her call, either way she wasn’t answering.

After many hours on the road, and not stopping for anything, she was in need of several things, gas being one, something to drink, and the ladies room were the others. Not necessarily in that order. She pulled into a large truck stop, figuring she could blend in with the other vehicles. Again, avoiding eye contact was her main focus. She filled the tank, and then visited the bathroom, before loading up with bottled water and snacks.

A sign saying free Wi-Fi caught her attention. There was no way she was going to drive across the country with no destination in mind, and the thought of Baltimore held no appeal. Mystic, South Dakota, where her mother’s family still lived, was a place she’d always wanted to go. Pulling her iPad out of her bag, she logged onto the free server and google searched the Glade family in Mystic from her mother’s journal entry.

“Gah, damn wolves and their secretive hides.” Alaina tapped on the route icon.

“Excuse me, are you okay?”

Alaina looked up, startled to see a slender man sitting so close to her. She scented the air, but found him to be one hundred percent human. She may be only part wolf and part fey, but she had heightened senses, and could smell another wolf a mile away. If she was paying attention. “I…do I know you?” she asked.

“You just exclaimed about wolves. I was wondering if you were okay.” He smiled, but it didn’t reach his eyes. Alaina’s creep meter went off.

“Oh, I was just looking at all these…stuffed animals.” She hid her screen and stood from the barstool.

Glad that she’d parked the rental close to the front of the building, something she’d learned in one of the self-defense classes she’d taken, Alaina waved at the stranger and held her breath as she walked briskly to the door. She felt him watching her as she left, but he didn’t follow. At the rate she was going, if she kept holding her breath she would be able to qualify for deep sea diving. The thought had her giggling as she put the car in gear and pointed it in the direction of Mystic. “At least now I have a destination in mind, even if it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg with the rental company.”

The song Something Bad by Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood came on the radio. It used to be one of her favorite songs, only now the words seemed ominous. She was running away from something bad, not toward it. She hoped.

She stopped one more time for gas and had driven almost nine hundred miles. When she’d left her mother was just starting to prepare lunch. The clock on the dash showed she’d been driving for almost fourteen hours, stopping for gas and food and short breaks to stretch her legs. As she passed through the town of Sturgis, she realized it was still filled with people long after closing time for bars and she wondered why. Mystic was still an hour away, but, being so close, she felt excitement and nerves bubble in her stomach.

So intent on getting to her mom’s sister, Payton’s, house, she missed the turnoff to their town, but saw the sign for Mystic Lodge and decided to continue on up the mountain. She hadn’t called to tell them she was coming, and since it was well after two in the morning, Alaina thought the lodge might have rooms.

The dark night seemed to close in on her as she drove further up and away from the town, with the only light coming from her headlights and the dashboard. She looked down at the mile gauge to see how far she’d gone, trying to measure how much farther she had to go.

“Oh, shit,” she said as she ran over something in the middle of the road, the sound of crunching glass could be heard through the closed windows. Her stomach clenched in dread and she figured she was halfway between the lodge and her aunt and uncle’s house. A trek she wouldn’t be scared to make if it wasn’t after two in the morning on a dark and winding road. She snorted. “Cue the scary music, Lainey.”

Had she not been playing the music so loud, and singing along like she was Adele, maybe she’d have seen the bottle lying in the road. Her rental jerked hard to the right, thankfully she was on a flat part of the road and was able to pull off to the side. The moon overhead gave her enough light to see the lopsided way the car was sitting.

She unplugged her phone from the charger putting it in her back pocket, grabbed her purse and bag and locked them in the trunk. Up or down? Alaina was always cautioned by her mom not to use her fey abilities because it upset her dad, or Roger. She threw caution out the proverbial window and let her fey senses guide her.

The rainbow of colors was awe inspiring, clearly leading back downward. “How does the story go?” She looked through the trees. “Over the hills and through the woods.”

With a shrug she followed the trail, wishing she was sitting in her comfy apartment in Baltimore watching Sons of Anarchy. Instead, she was traipsing through unknown territories, to seek shelter from unknown family. Not the smartest thing she’d ever done.

A wolf howled in the distance, followed by a chorus of several others. She’d heard wolves howling before, having grown up in a pack, but these howls had the hair on the back of her neck standing on end. Alaina thought about sticking to the road, but the colors were more vibrant and seemed to go in a straight line through the trees. As the howls sounded closer, she chose to go with her gut and headed into the woods, the thought of climbing one of the trees as a last resort flittered through her mind.

Her enhanced hearing picked up all the sounds surrounding her, and it took her a moment to filter them out and focus on the danger. The wolves were closing in from three sides. She was faster than a normal human, had heightened senses, but up against the odds of several shifters, she knew these were not mere wolves, she was no match. Even if she was to climb the tallest tree, they could shift and climb up after her. However, she did have her fey magic.

“Screw it,” she said and started running as fast as she could, following the trail while dodging low hanging branches. Her feet flew over the ground, barely making a sound, but each time she broke a twig it sounded like a gunshot to her ears. She knew the wolves could hear the same thing, she just prayed her Aunt Payton felt her presence. When she’d opened her fey abilities, the welcoming flood of magic was a familial one she recognized. It was very similar to her mother’s, only crisper, not as shadowed with sadness. Alaina realized her mother wasn’t happy, and she wished she’d paid closer attention when she was younger. She made a silent vow to do all she could to get her mother away from Roger and his pack…if she made it out of her own predicament.

Alaina swerved around a fallen tree, losing sight of her color guide. She stopped, trying to catch her bearings. A huge wolf jumped in front of her, his teeth bared, spittle dripping from his jaws. Another wolf, not quite as big, but just as menacing came at her from the left, followed by another on her right. She knew the tactic they were using, caging her in on all sides. She wondered if there was one behind her, but was too scared to take her eyes off the largest one in front of her. The eerie yellow eyes staring at her held menace and knowledge, a double whammy in her world. She wondered if she’d wandered onto their land.

“Listen, I know you understand me. My dad is alpha of the Cascade pack and would be really pissed if you hurt his baby girl.” A complete and utter lie, but he didn’t need to know that, she used the extra fey powers to surround her with an utter sense of calm, hoping they believed her.

The leader of the wolves chuffed and took a step forward.

She sent a call out to her fey family, hoping someone was up and near.

You never turn your back on a predator and you never run from a wolf. However, she did take a few steps back sensing there was no other wolves behind her. For every step she took backward, they took one forward, closing the gap between them.

Alaina raised her hands in front of her. They began to glow, magic from the lands infusing her with power she’d never had before. “If you don’t back the fuck off, I will blast your asses.” The two smaller wolves stopped the pursuit, their heads cocking to the side. The alpha snarled, the hair on his back stood up, indicating he was ready to attack. “I mean it, you prick. One move and you’ll be roasted dog meat. Imagine the stink, boys. Have you smelled burning hair?” She made a gagging sound, but never let her arms drop. They seemed to believe she could actually roast their asses, which Alaina wasn’t so sure she could or couldn’t do. Continuing to back up she didn’t take her eyes off of the three wolves in front of her, she didn’t realize where she was walking. In that moment her main worry was keeping the animals at bay. The thought made her giggle almost hysterically, but only for a split second.

Arms flailing she screamed as she fell off the edge of a cliff. Her back hit what felt like a tree branch. Instead of a free fall she began sliding, tumbling end over end as she frantically tried to grab onto anything to stop her downward descent. A sickening crunch followed by pain flared down her left arm, making her pull back and then a jarring stop followed by another hit, this time on her head and Alaina saw stars and then blackness swallowed her whole. She yelled out for help just before total darkness encompassed everything.

Accidentally Wolf

Synopsis

For veterinarian Cora Welch, being bitten by a young injured wolf wasn’t the best day of her life, nor the raging fever that followed. However, finding herself faced with a naked man proved even more than she had ever bargained for.

Zayn couldn’t believe what his inner wolf was telling him when he first saw the human doctor Cora, standing in nothing but a towel. The last thing he wanted was a mate, especially an accidental one. And at a time when danger seemed to be coming at the Mystic Pack from an unknown source, it just wasn’t in his plans.

All he had to do was get Cora through the fever, keep her safe from the other pack, and keep his fangs to himself. But nobody told him he’d have to fight a mating urge so strong within himself, that it was a losing battle. Now, he has to explain to Cora that he accidentally marked her for a second time, making her just like him.

Cora knew something was not right in her world the moment she wanted to climb her rescuer like a tree. Hearing Zayn tell her she was now a werewolf, like him and his pack, she realized she now had a home. If her new mate still wanted her after he heard about her family, Cora knew she’d be happy to be an accidental wolf.

Elle Boon

Author Bio

I’m a wife and mother who is a retired stay at home mom of 2. I say retired because my youngest is 14 and my oldest is 20. When my baby went to school, reading saved my sanity, and then the same year he started school, I was diagnosed with Cancer, again reading saved my sanity. When I recovered and realized how quickly life could change, I made a bucket list. The number one thing was to live. Check. On top of that list was to become a published author. Check. Eight years later I have accomplished that goal and several others.

I live in the Midwest, but I”m a southern girl with only a slight twang who says y’all quite frequently, and am known to say “Bless Your Heart” A LOT. If you know what that means, you do not want to be the one I say that to, lol. I cuss worse than if a trucker and a sailor were put together, but I do it with class *WEG*.

I write what I love to read, erotic romance. My books are definitely full of lots of story, but I leave nothing to the imagination in or out of the bedroom. My hope is that after readers have read one of my stories, they fall in love with the characters as much as I have.

The best part of my new journey is that I get to create new worlds, and have all kinds of stories in my head just waiting to be written. I truly love to hear from readers. You can find me on Twitter, Facebook or my webside, but I’m on Facebook ALL the time, so find me. I’d love to hear from you J

Some loves will last ’til your dying breath

Every choice has consequences—but seventeen-year-old Layla faces tougher choices than most. Light or darkness. Wickedly sexy demon prince Roth, or Zayne, the gorgeous, protective Warden she never thought could be hers. Hardest of all, Layla has to decide which side of herself to trust.

Layla has a new problem, too. A Lilin—the deadliest of demons—has been unleashed, wreaking havoc on those around her…including her best friend. To keep Sam from a fate much, much worse than death, Layla must strike a deal with the enemy while saving her city—and her race—from destruction.

Torn between two worlds and two different boys, Layla has no certainties, least of all survival, especially when an old bargain comes back to haunt them all. But sometimes, when secrets are everywhere and the truth seems unknowable, you have to listen to your heart, pick a side—and then fight like hell…

WHITE HOT KISS synopsis:

One kiss could be the last.

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she’s anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she’s crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she’s not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn’t an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she’s the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Stone Cold Touch - New Cover

Amazon ** Barnes and Noble ** iBooks ** IndieBound ** Kobo ** BAM

STONE COLD TOUCH Synopsis:

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

“Constantly entertaining…the narrative sizzles with as much tension as romance.”

And the Prequel Novella, BITTER SWEET LOVE…

Bitter Sweet Love - New Cover

Amazon ** Barnes and Noble ** iBooks ** BAM ** Kobo

BITTER SWEET LOVE Synopsis:

In a sizzling prequel novella to her new series The Dark Elements, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout draws readers into the extraordinary, irresistible world of Wardens and demons.

Dez wasn’t just Jasmine’s crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining the balance between good and evil. He was her everything…right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn’t help that Jas’s father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he’s back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn’t taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again…

“With her signature flare for combining humor, romance and action, Armentrout weaves a fast-paced read that will have readers’ hearts racing in more ways than one. Like Armentrout’s previous heroines, Jasmine is fun and full of attitude, while Dez is as snarky as he is sexy. This is a must read for new and old fans alike!” –RT Book Reviews
