The Getaway Series – Book 1

Synopsis

Every once in a while, you need to get away from it all.

I was a woman on the edge, shaken and shattered after a breakup that felt like it tore my entire world apart.
My best friend, sick of watching me drown in misery and melancholy, harassed me until I agreed to go with her on a week-long wilderness retreat.

She promised days spent bonding and getting in touch with our inner bad-asses. It was supposed to be all about the two of us roughing it and making do with the bare minimum. She assured me we were going to be pushed to our limits in ways that were unimaginable. Neither one of us could have ever guessed just how right she was.

Nowhere in the glossy brochure did it say anything about the fact I was going to have to battle the insufferable but deliciously rugged and sexy trail guide instead of the elements. The brochure also forgot to mention the part that warned when you left civilization behind, there was no place to pack your inhibitions and fears.

I was told that I would be facing a week where the only thing I should expect was the unexpected. However, no one mentioned that I was going to have to fight for my life…and my heart as soon as I ventured into the unknown.

I was a pro at hiding from my feelings but when it came time to face a real threat, one that could change everything, I learned I was more of a no surrender, no retreat kind of girl.

Retreat is a standalone novel, the first in the Getaway series which centers on the hardheaded and brokenhearted Warner brothers and the women that dare to love them.
These boys are very good at putting the wild in wilderness.

Michel’s Review

Wow!  Jay Crownover stepped out of her element and delivered a fantastic romantic suspense layered with emotional passages.  This book was not only a romantic suspense, it was also a journey for a woman who is questioning everything about herself.  She’s angry, hurt, guarded, and fearful.  She has emotionally boxed herself into her little self absorbed world and sealed the lid.  She’s lost herself.

Leo’s best friend convinced her to come to Wyoming for a wilderness retreat.  One week spent on the trails, living off the land, and becoming one with nature.  This is not Leo’s idea of a good time but she’s willing to suck it up because she has been a miserable selfish friend and it’s time to turn that around.

Leo thought she knew what she was getting into.  In her mind she pictured the typical cowboys guiding their group and bonding around the campfire at the end of the day.  She envisioned easy riding trails and scenic views.  Her expectations were way off base.  The trail guides are not the typical cowboys.  The Warner Brothers are in a class by themselves.  One is grumpy and looks more like a model biker, one is friendly but reserved, and the other is sullen and quiet.  They are there to do their jobs and make sure their clients have the best experience communing with nature.

The entire trip starts off balance.  One of the brothers has to stay behind because of a family emergency. The grumpy brother, Cy Warner has to take over the expedition until his brother can rejoin them later in the week.  The trail group is not the greatest group of people to be spending a week with on the trails.  An entitled dysfunctional family from New York City that includes two smart mouthed teenagers, two city women that aren’t used to nature,  two oddball men who are completely stand offish to the entire group, and two guides that are pushing their limits.  It ends up that was the easy part of the trip.  What happens while they are on the trail is something no one could of foreseen, not even their experienced guides.  The peaceful retreat has turned into a dangerous endeavor forcing them to fight for survival.

Through all of this Leo finally faces herself, she conquers her fears, and gains new strengths she never knew she had.  She also finds what she thought was love was only an illusion.  Cy Warner has taught her to reach for more and give more of herself.

This book literally blew me away.  It was unlike anything Jay Crownover has written.  I was on the edge of my seat when the danger kicked up full throttle.  What made it even more intense was the reality of the situation.  This situation is something that could happen anywhere.  Jay’s vivid descriptions made the story come alive.

Leo was not my favorite character in the beginning.  As the book began to progress and Leo’s layers started peeling away, I began to see a completely different individual. I enjoyed witnessing her growth as an individual.  Her prickly personality masked the vulnerable woman hiding behind her fears.

The chemistry between Cy and Leo was sizzling.  Their verbal sparring and heated moments added the fire in this book.  There was the right amount of romance mixed within the events evolving throughout the story.

I am looking forward to reading more books in the Getaway series.  There are two Warner brothers screaming for their own stories.  They both deserve it after what happened in Retreat.

Synopsis

Growing up in a small town isn’t easy, especially when you’re the daughter of a local cult leader. Ten years ago, Eden Collins left Clear Springs, Montana, and never once looked back. But when the bodies of murdered young women surface, their corpses violated and marked with tattoos worn by her mother’s followers, Eden, now an FBI agent, can’t turn a blind eye. To catch the killer, she’s going to have to return to the fold.

Sheriff Zach Owens isn’t comfortable putting Eden in danger, even if she is an elite agent. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to be so attracted to her. As calm and cool as she appears, he knows this can’t be a happy homecoming. Zach wants to protect her—from her mother, the cult, and the evil that lurks behind its locked gates. But Eden is his only key to the tight-lipped group, and she may just be closer to the killer than either one of them suspects…

“Martha.”

Her mother’s eyes lit up and she half pushed to her feet. “Eden. I admit, when Abram told me you were back in town, I could hardly believe it.”

“I’m not back.”

Her smile dimmed, and Eden called herself an idiot ten times over for wanting to do something to bring it back. Manipulation, that’s all it is. Martha motioned to the cups in front of her. “I got your favorite.”

There was nothing else to do but take the empty seat and get this over with. She took a sip—sweet with lots of cream—and didn’t bother to tell Martha she’d switched over to drinking her coffee black a few years back. It would serve no purpose, and her entire goal was to get out of here with the least conversation possible.

“It’s been a long time.”

She shifted, not sure how to take the searching look her mother was giving her, as if she was trying to memorize Eden’s features—or, possibly, was comparing them to the ones she’d had ten years ago. What was there to say? I hated the life you created and forced me into, so I left. You won’t change, and neither will I. This will never be what you want it to be. She couldn’t force the words past her closed throat, so she took another drink of coffee.

Martha hesitated, and then mirrored the motion. “A lot is different from when you were last home.”

Not nearly enough, she’d wager. But if her mother was offering information, she’d be a fool not to get everything she could from Martha. “Oh?”

“Our community has grown. It’s flourishing.” She gave a small self-deprecating smile. “But, then, you didn’t come back to talk about Elysia. How have you been?”

Over the years, she received phone calls from Abram, demanding information at odd times in that quiet terrifying way of his. He never asked more than a few questions, and she never offered more than strictly necessary for those forced check-ins—whatever it took to get him off her back. She didn’t want to now, either. “I’m still working for the government.” Safe enough to admit, since her mother already knew about it.

Sure enough, Martha’s lips thinned. “The FBI.”

“Using the skills I learned from you.” She knew better, but she couldn’t help the dig.

“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Of course she didn’t. Because Elysia most certainly wasn’t a cult. Right. She didn’t roll her eyes, but it was a near thing. “You might like to pretend otherwise, but I know for a fact that Elysia has been on the FBI watch lists for years, so you’re not fooling everyone.”

“Eden Magdalene, you might be a woman grown, but that doesn’t mean you can take that tone of voice with me.”

Or speak too many truths, apparently. Eden stared at her coffee cup, suddenly exhausted. “I don’t suppose you know anything about a photograph showing up in my email yesterday?” It had all the hallmarks of one taken for an official police investigation, but that didn’t explain how it had found her. She’d had a friend in the tech department try to trace it, but it had been routed through several IP addresses before disappearing into the Internet-ether. Call her paranoid, but her first instinct was that her mother had something to do with it. How was the question, though.

Martha cocked her head to the side, frowning. “I’m not sure what you’re speaking of.”

Of course she wasn’t, though Eden was at a loss to decide if that was truth or because she didn’t want to admit to somehow being the leak in a murder investigation. She sighed. “What am I doing here, Martha? You know very well we couldn’t sit in the same room without going for each other’s throats when I was eighteen, and it would seem nothing’s changed since then.”

“I want what I’ve always wanted, baby. I want you to come home.”

There’s no home for me to come to, not now. Not ever. No matter how much I wish that wasn’t true. She cleared her throat. “I—” Think. Think fast. A hard no would just have Martha digging in her heels, and she wasn’t sure yet if Zach would change his mind. “I’ll think about it.” The lie rolled off her tongue with the ease of long practice. She wasn’t going back. She’d set herself on fire before she willingly walked through the gates of Elysia and put herself under her mother’s control again. The only reason she was here was to make sure no other girls turned up dead.

“It would mean so much.” Martha’s smile brightened, and a traitorous part of Eden brightened in response. It was how it always was with her mother. She rarely had to take the stern role when she could manipulate much more effectively with a soft word and a particular look. And when that wouldn’t work? Well, she wasn’t above getting her hands dirty, either.

Did you do it? Did you see that girl killed?

Eden couldn’t ask. The sheriff had already refused her help, and she’d have to be a special kind of stupid to go investigating on her own. There was nothing she could do without the power of the law on her side. If she tried…

Well, if she tried, there were plenty of unmarked graves in Elysia. What was one more?

Synopsis:

Edwin Allen Mercer
I want them all to read my words. And they do. Every last blood-stained sentence, they’ve read and praised me for. They love the gore and violence, the realness. And I get a sense of power with it all because I know a secret: the victims in my books—they’re real and have all died on my table. And maybe that’s why the last book had such awful reviews. Murder is, after all, a dirty little thing. Some can stomach it. Others can’t. My answer to those reviews: find a woman to co-author with. To be the next pathetic character in my book. Pity she’s so pretty.

Miranda Cross
All I’ve ever wanted was to be successful as a writer so when I was offered the opportunity to co-author a book with my idol, EA Mercer, I jumped at the chance. He’s beautiful and a literary genius, but something about him makes my stomach knot. And maybe it’s my overactive imagination making my hairs stand on end when he walks up behind me.
After all, these wicked little words we’re typing are only fiction. They’re only fiction…

Nine months ago, Sara Adams awoke with no memory. The man holding her hand told her she’s a member of The Light, a tight-knit religious group led by the terrifying and charismatic Father Gabriel. With everything at stake, Sara struggles to sort out her true memories from her indoctrination. The desire to escape consumes her, but who can she trust? And what other followers of The Light were forced into this life, brainwashed to believe they belonged? Sara

Shrill screams echoed throughout our dimly lit bedroom, accelerating my heartbeat and pulling me from the terrible nightmare. I waited for more, until the realization struck. The screams were my own.

“Jacob?” I called, my voice shaking with dread as I reached for my husband. Instead of reassurance, my fingers met cold empty sheets. He was gone—still away at another campus.

What just happened? Was it a dream?

I clung to the covers as I puffed my cheeks and slowly exhaled. While each breath helped to still the chaos, the exercise wasn’t enough.

Who am I? Who is he?

Jacob’s questions from months ago came back. They were my security. They’d worked before.

I am Sara Adams and my husband is Jacob Adams.

Pushing the images from my dream, or nightmare, away, I imagined Jacob’s comforting embrace. Slowly I threw back the down comforter and willed the cool air to soothe my perspiration-drenched skin. From the way my heart galloped in my chest, I might have been running a marathon, not sleeping.

In my sleep I’d been battling to escape a vehicle, and then an explosion of heat.
It had been a dream, I reassured myself—a nightmare. The accident I’d had, nearly nine months before, had been different. I couldn’t remember it, but I’d been told that I’d been injured and gone unconscious. In the nightmare I had been out and away from the wreckage.

I shook my head.

It seemed so real.

In my dream I hadn’t been able to see past the darkness, yet I’d known I wasn’t injured.
My arms surrounded my midsection as the memories replayed like pictures in my mind. Someone was hurting me—purposely harming me, and there was a voice—a deep voice.

Jacob’s voice?

No. He wouldn’t hurt me.

My entire body shuddered as goose bumps peppered my skin. Sitting upright, I reached for the bedside lamp. With trembling fingers I turned the knob and my eyes adjusted as the soft light combined with the sun’s perpetual summer glow.

I closed my eyes and tried to concentrate on Jacob’s questions.

Who am I? Who is he?

This time I said the words aloud, praying that if I spoke the truth, the images would disappear. “I am Sara Adams. He is my husband, Jacob Adams.” I pulled myself from the bed and walked to the bathroom. Turning on the light and the faucet, I cupped the cool water and splashed my face. As I reached for the cup and began to fill it, a metaphoric dam that had been constructed to hold back my past burst.

My mind was flooded—no longer with simple images, but with scene after scene.

For the first time since I could recall, I knew the woman in the mirror.

I knew me.

Robin’s Review

Have you been “Aleatha’d”? It’s a phenomenon experienced by those of us who have finished reading an Aleatha Romig novel. You’re in shock. Left with SO many questions. Wondering…..what the heck just happened? This is EXACTLY how I felt after finishing the first book of The Light series, Into the Light. Thank goodness we are now able to find the answers to all of our questions with the release of Away from the Dark, the final installment of Romig’s mystery/psychological thriller duology.

It’s been nine months since Sara Adams woke up without her memory at the Northern Light. Her husband, Jacob, nursed Sara back to health and filled in all of the blanks – teaching her about the ways of The Light. Father Gabriel’s doctrine. The obedience and submission expected from his spouse. Her role as the wife of an Assemblyman. Sara carefully studied the doctrine, faithfully attended services, and during those nine months, she fell in love with Jacob.

Jacob doesn’t know this, but Sara’s memories from before have recently been slipping through, and now she questions everything – her feelings for Jacob, who she is, and who she can trust. Lies. Everything she’s been told is a lie, and Sara realizes her life is in danger. The Light is a dangerous and far-reaching organization, and somehow, Sara needs to escape. And, if she can escape, will Sara be able to protect those who are innocent while she brings down Father Gabriel and The Light?

Romig begins this novel with Sara, one week prior to the events which conclude Into the Light. At the end of the first book, I was left with some pressing questions concerning Sara, and Romig gets right to the point. True to her writing style, Romig unfolds her story in layers. For me, this means the answers we are given just lead to more questions. I find Romig’s writing style entertaining. She is careful to reveal pertinent details about the plot and characters at just the right moments – answering our questions about Sara, Jacob, Stella Montgomery, Dylan Richards, Father Gabriel and the organization known as The Light.

Romig alternates between Sara and Jacob’s first person perspectives throughout most of the novel, but later in the book she adds the first person perspective of Dylan Richards. Adding Dylan’s point of view was a great move, opening my eyes to a whole new layer of the story.

Romig did a fantastic job of developing her primary characters. Jacob and Sara’s natural personalities consistently fight brainwashing throughout the entire story, which makes this story feel authentic. After regaining her memory, Sara continues to struggle with being submissive and not questioning, while her naturally strong personality has a tendency to question everything. Jacob struggles with the need to dominate and “correct” Sara, while his natural tendency is to protect her and treat her as an equal. It’s absolutely brilliant.

In summary, I feel the strength of Away from the Dark lies in the writing and character development. The story is also unique and very creative, as Romig’s always are. Aleatha Romig leaves readers with a finish that is open-ended, which I never like to see. I’m not sure if Romig’s intention is to write more story in the future or if it’s left to the reader to decide what happens next. Either way, I would have personally loved more closure to this series, and I think this held me back from going with a 6-star rating for Away from the Dark. Even so, I REALLY enjoyed reading Away from the Dark and The Light series! If you love mysteries and/or dark psychological thrillers, I highly recommend it! Five stars.

Michel’s Review

Away From The Dark by Aleatha Romig is the second book in The Light Series.  It should not be read as a stand alone novel.  It is the stunning conclusion of the first book, Into The Light.

Away From The Dark begins one week prior to where Into The Light left off.  Aleatha quickly brings the reader up to date, filling in the blanks of how Sara fell into the predicament that once again put her in danger with The Light.

Away From The Dark differs from the first book in presentation and delivery.  Rather than getting background that led Sara to The Light, the reader is getting a more in depth insight of The Light itself.  Questions are answered as to what The Light really is and how The Light obtains new members.  The very thorough revelations drive the story and validate the momentum building in the intense conclusion.

Readers also get more insight to who Jacob Adams really is and how he obtained his status within the community.  The readers are also given an in depth insight into Father Gabriel, the Assemblymen, and the inner workings of The Light.  This is where Dylan Richards becomes an integral part of the story.  His connections to The Light are revealed. His role within the organization is shocking.

What I found most fascinating about this series was the immersion into an occult.  The brainwashing of intelligent individuals had me mesmerized.  Even though Jacob and Stella were both strong willed and undercover within The Light, they both struggled with their real personalities and the personalities they took on within the fellowship.  They were each two separate people within one mind.  Their two separate personalities battled with one another even though they consciously knew who they really were.

Away From The Dark was fast paced and brilliantly delivered.  Each revelation was perfectly synchronized to drive the story forward while having an enthralling shock factor. It was a page turner.

While I was completely mesmerized with The Light series, the ending left me a little stupefied.  Away From The Dark had an opened ending that didn’t give the readers complete closure.  I’m not sure if Aleatha intends to take this series in a new direction or if readers are to conclude the ending for themselves.  Personally I was satisfied with Jacob and Sara’s ending.  I am not sure if I want to pursue the next transition of The Shadows.  Their part in the story was surreal and bit too much.  This is what held me back from giving this book 6 Stars.  Overall… The Light Series is a 2016 Favorite.

Follow Me by Tiffany Snow is the first book in The Corrupted series.  I have to say that this series has caught my attention and may end up being my favorite series by the incredible writer Tiffany Snow.  That is saying a lot because I have loved everything I have read by Tiffany Snow and give her books high praising reviews.  She is the queen of romantic suspense.  She is the supreme goddess of creating love triangles that leave the readers in love with both men, wanting each one to win the girl.  The one thing that stands out in the Corrupted series and sets it apart from Tiffany’s other series is the leading female character, China Mack.  China Mack has become my favorite female character of all time.  I love her brilliance, her analytic mind, her quirky tastes, her odd OCD moments, and her clueless sense of romance.  She is a breath of fresh air in the fictional world.  It’s no wonder that she has captured the attention of two very different dynamic men.  What she does with that attention is entertaining, comical, and brilliant.  I want to be China Mack!

China Mack is a certified genius. Cysnet snapped her up before she graduated from MIT.  CEO of Cysnet, Jackson Cooper ( who is almost as brilliant ) has assigned China a top secret job ( not that all of her jobs were already top secret- nothing unusual) where she will be strictly working with him.  They are working on a high security project for Wyndemere, a defense contractor for the government.  The project is highly sensitive and bodies have already started dropping.  Not only is this new project going to create disorder in China’s work routine, it is going to change her predictable ordered life.  The only problem she has had in life is keeping her pet fish alive.

Working on the Wyndemere project with Jackson Cooper is not the only interruption in the carefully, quirky ordered life of China Mack.  Her sixteen year old brilliant niece, Mia, has run away from home and come to live with China.  She is a lot like China in her IQ and brilliance but where she differs is that she is a normal teenager who likes normal teenage things.  This is something China cannot relate to.  China also has problems with the typical teenage habits such as make up and clothes all over the place, spontaneous decisions, and rose colored romantic notions.  Her home has been invaded by a mutant teenage alien known as her niece Mia.  Her life size Iron Man figurine has to be moved from her office so her Mia can have a place to sleep.  That just won’t work and has China in a tailspin.

The third disruption in China’s perfectly ordered life comes from the new sexy neighbor, who looks just like Superman, that moved in next door.  To top it off… his name is Clark!  Clark is expressing interest in China beyond friendship.  Mia is playing matchmaker and trying to make China her very own Eliza Doolittle.  China has no clue about romance or dating.  It’s a disaster in the making.

China’s world is spinning out of control.  Her job at Wydemere has become extremely dangerous.  Her assigned team is disappearing.  The body count is going up.  Her boss Jackson is not who she thought he was.  He may be conspiring with the enemy.  The big question is who exactly is the enemy?  Is it our government, other governments, terrorists, or who knows what else?  One moment Jackson seems on the up and up.  He has also expressed romantic interest in China and she wonders exactly what is up with that.  That leads to Clark, he may be an enemy as well.  He is not the human relations business man he presented himself to be.

Her world is out of control.  Her life is in danger.  Not only does she have to protect herself but also her niece Mia.  Mia has become collateral in China’s world.

The only thing China can do is fight back using her brilliance.  What’s next….CLIFFHANGER!

BRILLIANT START IN THE CORRUPTED HEARTS SERIES!  Tiffany Snow has me hooked!

About Tiffany Snow

TiffanySnowI love to stick with characters over a series of books when I read, which is the same way I write. My first series – THE KATHLEEN TURNER SERIES – includes five books, two companion novels, and features a love triangle. My new series, coming from Montlake Romance December 16, 2014, is the TANGLED IVY TRILOGY, beginning with IN HIS SHADOW.
As for me, I’ve been reading romance novels since I was way too young to read such things, have an unhealthy obsession for all things Doctor Who, prefer Pepsi to Coke and Absolut to both, think men who drink girly cocktails are wusses, have learned to never stop believing in my beloved St. Louis Cardinals, and can recite the entire scripts of When Harry Met Sally and Apollo 13. George Washington is cool, Bon Jovi still rocks the house, and Bruce Willis is the ultimate alpha-male hero. Most of all, romance never, ever gets old.

Deadly Silence

Blood Brothers- Book 1

By Rebecca Zanetti

Buy: Amazon / B & N / ITunes / Kobo

Synopsis

DON’T LOOK BACK

Under siege. That’s how Ryker Jones feels. The Lost Bastards Investigative Agency he opened up with his blood brothers has lost a client in a brutal way. The past he can’t outrun is resurfacing, threatening to drag him down in the undertow. And the beautiful woman he’s been trying to keep at arm’s length is in danger…and he’ll destroy anything and anyone to keep her safe.

Paralegal Zara Remington is in over her head. She’s making risky moves at work by day and indulging in an affair with a darkly dangerous PI by night. There’s a lot Ryker isn’t telling her and the more she uncovers, the less she wants to know. But when all hell breaks loose, Ryker may be the only one to save her. If his past doesn’t catch up to them first…

Full of twists and turns you won’t see coming, DEADLY SILENCE is New York Times bestselling author Rebecca Zanetti at her suspenseful best.

A Blood Brothers Novel

Michel’s Review

Deadly Silence by Rebecca Zanetti is the first book in the Blood Brothers series.  It is a spin off of the Sin Brothers series with a different twist.  The Blood Brothers are the secret project hidden from the government.  They have no idea of their real identities and family backgrounds.  Their family bonds are through their childhood experiences in the foster care system.  They have suffered abuse at the hands of their caretakers and are bound together by a murder they committed years ago.  They are now bonded together by their secret company, The Lost Bastards Investigative Agency.  Their agency works behind the scenes and specializes in extractions.  They find those who are lost.  Their latest case has led them to a serial killer who is targeting women connected with law enforcement personnel.  They are trying to get one step ahead rather than one step behind.  They want to catch him before he strikes again.  The FBI is somewhat collaborating with them in hopes the exchanges will lead to the killer.  They have relocated the agency to Cisco, Wyoming for a legit cover.

Ryker Jones has been having a no ties affair with Paralegal Zara Remington.  They met through the law firm Zara works for.  Ryker has done work for the firm.  Now he is living in town permanently and wants more from their affair than a bedroom romp.  Zara’s not quite sure how to take that because Ryker has way too many secrets.  The thing is Zara also has a secret, a secret that has put her in danger, jeopardized her job, and just may get her killed.  Ryker and his brothers are determined to protect Zara and keep her under the radar of the serial killer they are chasing.  Dealing with two very different deadly situations has their plates full when their past comes back to haunt them in another very deadly way.

There are too many secrets and each one ends in Deadly Silence.

I was glued to the pages and on the edge of my seat.  Rebecca Zanetti is the queen of writing sexy romantic suspense.  The ending was just the beginning for the Blood Brothers.  Their secrets are getting exposed and the revelations behind the secrets are riveting.

I highly recommend reading Deadly Silence by Rebecca Zanetti!

Synopsis

Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner.

The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

GET A QUICK PEEK:

The rhythmic pounding of the man running for his life in between Sugar’s and Lexi’s treadmills was more than enough up-close proof that Bishop O’Kane was as physically fit as his profile said. This gym catered to professional bodybuilders but was empty with the exception of one other person and staff. It was elite and niche, and Sugar had basically used her pregnant stomach and her hormones to get them a day pass.

Not exactly Titan-level detective work, but this was more a girl’s trip than anything else… right? Her phone buzzed as she and Lexi walked lazily on either side of their unknowing target.

Lexi: What have we learned? I’m bored.

Sugar: I was bored at home. This was something to do.

Lexi: Right.

Lexi: I think he knows we know each other.

Lexi: Shoot! He’s looking at both of us.

Lexi: SUGAR!

Sugar got off her treadmill and walked calmly to the bathroom. The second she was out of sight, she pulled her phone back out.

Sugar: Do I have to teach you how to creep up on a dude!?!?

Lexi: Maybe…

She tittered to herself. Well, that was probably true. For as hot as Lexi was, she was clueless when it came to the art of flirting. Though they weren’t flirting. But still, spying on a guy took a certain level of finesse that Lexi didn’t have.

Sugar: We need a new game plan.

Sugar: Does he still look suspicious of us?

Sugar: Hello?

Sugar: Hey, Thelma, it’s Louise. Why’d you go radio silent?

Lexi: We have a problem

Sugar: On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 is we need to hit the pancake house again, and 10 is I have to hit up GUNS for the ammo Jared wouldn’t let me have, gimme a number.

She grabbed her bag from a locker and wrestled out of her exercise pants and back into leather pants, which—thank the Lord for maternity adaptation—were more comfortable.

Sugar’s screen blinked with the text.

Lexi: 10. 10. 10.

Sugar: Easy, killer. On my way.

But the text wouldn’t send. The little circle kept circling. No signal. Ugh. What the hell? She pushed out the door to find the hallway dark. A tickle of adrenaline crept up her neck, and she slowed her pace.

“Hello?” A Russian accent called into the bathroom where she had just been.

Training and instinct made Sugar drop to the floor, listening to the voice continue to call and the person go in and out of the locker rooms and whatever rooms were down the other hallway.

Her pulse picked up. She could feel the blood thumping in her neck and in her stomach, which was a change from the norm. But all in all, this was no different than creeping like a shadow on any other job. Except she didn’t know who or what she was dealing with, and she had to hide what felt like an additional few feet of her stomach from view while trying to figure out what the double deuces was happening.

She tried her cell phone again. Shoot. She got nothing but a spinning circle and a no service signal. Clearly, somewhere in the building was a cell-phone jammer, which meant this was more of a professional job than a slam-and-bam robbery.

Okay… what to do?

Slinking down the hallway, she heard no exercise equipment clinking and clanking. No men throwing heavy things. No people grunting as they lifted heavy objects for personal enjoyment. There was only the empty blare of music that, now that all was abandoned and quiet, played far too loud. Her phone continued to cycle without a signal, and Sugar’s eyes searched for signs of anyone in the building—most importantly, Lexi. And where had that searching Russian man gone? She needed a weapon. Fast.

She checked her phone again.

Nope. The hell with it. She tucked it in her back pocket. Across the open floor were hand weights. She could grab a few jump ropes or one of the calisthenics bars while she was there. But crossing the gym was too dangerous. With a view of nothing but treadmills, elliptical machines, and stair climbers, she had nothing but magazines to smack a bad dude with. Nothing deadly.

So the plan for the moment was to keep against the wall and head for the main desk. Surely there was a pair of scissors. A stapler. Hell, she could be deadly with a phone cord. All she needed was the right angle. But really, Sugar stressed about Lexi.

She crept around another corner of the main gym. No one was there.

No Lexi. No Bishop. No random meatheads. No guy with a Russian accent searching for rogue people hiding and creeping.

“What is going on?” Her pulse pounded in her neck, and confusion covered every thought. Only Emergency Exit signs illuminated the room, and the place was eerie.

Her quiet question went unanswered, and the baby took that moment to kick. “Easy, tater tot. I’ve got this.”

Michel’s Review

Transfer by Aly Martinez is the riveting conclusion in the Retrieval Duet.

Clare Noir’s life was on the line, her only concern was that her daughter Tessa made it out before her monster of a husband killed her as well.  She knew Roman and Elisabeth LeBlanc would take care of Tessa and keep her safe.  Her fate was already determined the day she married Walter Noir.

Rather than dying, she’s saved by Agent Heath Light, a man she knew as Luke Crossgrove, her trainer at the gym.  The DEA is trying to take down Walter Noir’s organization and put the man behind bars.

Walter Noir escaped arrest.  He’s gunning for his wife and daughter.  Nobody takes what is his.  He will take down the LeBlancs, Agent Heath Light, and the DEA.  He may have tried to play God when his daughter was conceived, but she’s his no matter what the DNA tests say.  Clare was his the moment he saw her in the all night diner.  No one will touch her except him.  He will determine whether she lives or dies.

I was glued to the pages.  Aly Martinez kept me on the edge of my seat.  The suspense, the passion, and family bonds were the glue that made two separate love stories so powerful.  I highly recommend The Retrieval Duet by Aly Martinez.

It was a whirlwind, but we were happy…

Until we got greedy and wanted a family.

It was a life I couldn’t give her, not for lack of trying. Fertility just wasn’t on our side. We sought out doctors and treatments. Spent money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a brave face for a world that didn’t understand.

Finally, we were successful…

Until we were forced to bury our son.

We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.

They say love is in the details, but it was the details that ruined us.
