Staring into the flames, I brooded about my uncertain future. I didn’t trust my ambivalence toward teaching because I was a master at self-sabotage. He opened the passenger door for her but caught her before she could slide in. “You’re cold.”

Actually, she was freezing. “I forgot my jacket this morning—No, don’t give me yours,” she said when he made to take his off.

So instead he spread it open and wrapped as much of it around her as possible. Chest to chest, thighs to things…and everything in between mashed up against each other all cozy like.

Except it didn’t feel cozy.

It felt…sexy as hell.

“I’m sorry, Noelle. I’m really sorry.” I don’t know what I’m apologizing for. The fact that I don’t believe her weak lie or because I kissed her. No. I’m not sorry for either.

“It’s okay. Really. Thanks for caring. And thank you for my birthday gift.” She pauses and brushes her pinkie finger against mine. “You made my birthday really special, and I’ll never forget it.”

Without thinking, I loop my pinkie finger around hers, linking them together. Linking us together. We walk to her window like this and I break our connection reluctantly, bringing my hand up to her bruised cheek. “Please be careful,” I beg, and I’m not sure what I’m even begging her to be careful of. I’m just so worried about her.

“I will,” she whispers. “Catch a couple fireflies on the way home.”

Author Trudy Stiles has outshined all of her previous novels with her newly released story titled Epic Love! Epic Love is the third novel of the Epic Fail series, a series of new adult novels written about each member of the wildly popular rock band Epic Fail. This time, Stiles writes about lead singer Heath Strickland and his first love, Noelle Durand, in a novel that CAN be read as a standalone. Epic Fail is an incredibly sweet, second-chance romance that begins with two children who bond over a game of Wiffle Ball.

When the Durand family moves into the estate next door, Heath has no idea what Noelle will come to mean to him. To everyone on the outside, Noelle seems to have a perfect life, but it doesn’t take long for Heath to figure out something bad is going on with his new best friend. Over time, their close friendship evolves into something more special, and Heath realizes he would give up everything he owns to protect Noelle – to bring her happiness and keep her safe. One day, Noelle just vanishes, and although she is presumed dead, Heath never gives up hope that she will someday resurface.

Epic Love is written in a fashion that is typical for Trudy Stiles. The author narrates her story from the first person perspective of both Heath and Noelle, while also alternating between past and present chapters. Stiles cleverly arranged the novel content, commingling storyline from past and present with perfect precision. The first half of Epic Love has a greater focus on the past, as a friends-to-lovers relationship develops between our main characters during their teenage years. Then, after a 12-year separation, I really enjoyed how our characters become reacquainted in the latter half of the novel!

I experienced a wide range of emotions while reading Epic Love. Anger. Confusion. Heartbreak. Sadness. Hope. Relief. Happiness. Some chapters had me smiling with joy, others left me feeling distress for the characters. I think the reason I felt so much is that I truly cared about these characters. I love reading young adult novels, and although Epic Love is definitely not a YA novel, a portion of the story is about Heath and Noelle during their late childhood and teenage years. Young adults just feel so deeply, and with her writing, Stiles expressed their young emotions perfectly.

I’ve followed Stiles’ writing career from the beginning, and she doesn’t hesitate to write about controversial topics. Although I don’t want to give away spoilers, I do think it’s important to warn readers that there are some very dark, abusive scenes in Epic Love. That being said, I think these scenes were very well written. I felt anxiety and horror while reading them. In fact, as an objective reader, I believe that I felt everything Stiles wanted her readers to feel. Throughout the story, I thought the writing flowed beautifully, and I enjoyed the uniqueness of Stiles’ plot.

Overall, Epic Love is just a beautiful story of love and healing. If you have never had a chance to read a novel written by Trudy Stiles, I highly recommend you consider picking up a copy of Epic Love! I’m including this 5-star novel as one of my 2016 favorites!

Excerpt

Outside, Sandman screams and chants as we hurry him down the pre-planned route. Trigger is on the phone, giving coordinates to the guys in the sky for evacuation as he and Killshot go back inside the building we were occupying to grab our equipment.

Again, Sandman puts up a fight, and I am forced to the ground with him.

A whistling buzz pierces my ears, followed by an earth shaking explosion.

The building has been hit!

The ringing in my ears is horrific. The pain I feel as brick and metal hit me is allowed for five, four, three, two, one, and now I dismiss it.

Sandman easily pushes away from the grip I have on him because, lucky for him, he was covered by my body. When I grab him, I quickly realize my shoulder is dislocated, but fuck if I let him go. Not when we spent years looking for him.

I hear Trigger yelling but, with the ringing in my ears, I have no idea what the hell he’s saying.

I look back at Sandman, who has a sick smile on his face. I push him to the ground and look back for my team.

Trigger is a mess. Blood is everywhere as he pushes parts of the building off of him. But I don’t see Killshot. I am caught in a moment of needing to help my men, yet not wanting to release my captive.

I look back at Sandman who knows the conundrum I am faced: His live capture or helping my men. What he doesn’t know is who I am.

Another whistle and another explosion rocks us.

I pull out my piece and look at the sick fuck.

For first-time teacher Sheridan Monroe, it’s all about the kids. Having lost her parents early on, Sheridan is especially invested in giving the children that she teaches a safe place, and letting them know that they are special and loved. When English Bridges arrives in her class, it doesn’t take long at all for Sheridan to fall completely in love with this quirky little girl. Beckley Bridges, on the other hand, is another story altogether. Gruff, unapproachable, and sometimes downright rude, English’s father quickly becomes one of Sheridan’s least favorite people. But English is special, and, when her safety is threatened, even two people with nothing in common will come together to make sure she’s taken care of.

I enjoyed absolutely everything about FOR THE LOVE OF ENGLISH. Sheridan is like a breath of fresh air, and is the perfect foil for Beck, who has had to be responsible for so long that he spends a little bit too much time in his own head. Being on her own for so long has left Sheridan pretty much filter-free, and the things that come out of her mouth had me laughing out loud. I honestly don’t think that Beck knew what to do with her, and that his standoffishness had more to do with not having encountered her special brand of living life than anything else.

In Sheridan’s opinion, Beck is at the very bottom of the list of people that she’d like to spend time with. But, time and again, fate and English work their magic to ensure that Sheridan and Beck are firmly in each other’s orbit. Soon enough, the two begin to see beneath the surface, and their feelings for each other evolve.

I’ve been a fan of A.M. Hargrove’s for a while, but she really nailed it with this read. Besides the humor, the passion, and a little girl that stole my heart, FOR THE LOVE OF ENGLISH also had a suspenseful storyline that kept me reading far into the night so that I could see how things resolved, and I was riveted until the very last word. 4.5 sweet, sassy, sexy, suspenseful stars for this book, because everyone can use a little bit of English in their lives.
