Luc’s heart squeezed. [Cat] was embarrassed to ask her family for help, like he’d have been embarrassed asking his. Except, that would never be an issue because he had more money than he could spend in one lifetime. Money to finance the creamery expansion his dad had talked about for years, and to send his folks on that cruise they’d hankered after but could never afford because of the cost of raising four kids and putting most of them through college. Money for everything except what mattered most—taking care of his wife and their child like he’d planned.

“Pay for the hockey registration when your grant comes through.” He tried to smile. “I know you’re good for it.”

“Thanks.” Cat’s voice cracked and she took one hand away from her bag to rub it across her face. “Hockey means everything to Amy. I want her to be able to play, but she’s growing so fast right now.”

“Hockey’s an expensive sport.” He slid an arm around her shoulders and gave her a little squeeze. The same kind of friendly squeeze he’d given her all those times back in high school when she’d saved his butt in chemistry. Before today, however, his fingers had never tingled when he’d touched Cat. His body had never heated, either.

Cat started and pulled away at the same instant he did. “Hockey can be a dangerous sport too, and now Amy will be playing with boys. She hasn’t played with boys since she was seven. She could get hurt.

Like he had, hurt so bad it had ended his career. “Amy’s playing minor hockey. At her age, there is a rule about no body checking.” He tried to make his tone reassuring. “I promise I’ll keep a close eye on her.” It was his job as her coach, and he’d do the same for any kid. It had nothing to do with the strange and unexpected attraction he all of a sudden had for this woman he’d known his whole life, who he’d never really looked at until today.

A woman who wasn’t Maggie. Luc’s stomach clenched in a tangled lump of guilt and grief, tied tight with a slippery ribbon of disloyalty. Maggie was never coming back, but that didn’t mean Luc could forget her. Or that he wanted to.

Tracey’s Review

Cat McGuire has mixed feelings about returning to her hometown of Firefly Lake, Vermont. She never quite fit in, preferring to spend time with her studies and her books to joining in with the other kids, and being back is enough to make her forget all of the successes she’s had since leaving. Luc Simard, hometown hero, was good at everything, but never made Cat feel anything less than accepted. Now that both are back in town, the feelings of friendship that they’d always shared are growing into something that neither one expected, and they’re not quite sure what to do about it.

Cat and Luc are both somewhat shut down in matters of the heart. While Cat has put her all into raising her daughter on her own, she hasn’t found a place in her heart to trust men. Both her father and the father of her child haven’t given her any good reason to open herself up, and it isn’t until seeing how much love has changed her brother, and reconnecting with her friend Luc, that Cat’s heart begins to make room for love.

Since the death of his wife, Luc has closed himself off emotionally. The guilt that he feels for choices that he made, and the way that things played out, has made him unable to even entertain the idea of another chance at love. Until Cat, that is. Because he’s seeing her in a completely different light, and it isn’t long before he can’t but give in to the feelings that he has.

When I reviewed SUMMER AT FIREFLY LAKE, the previous book in this heartwarming and feel-good series by author Jen Gilroy, I commented that sometimes going back home, to a place, and a group of people, is not only possible, but necessary. Jen cements this sentiment beautifully in BACK HOME AT FIREFLY LAKE, the third book in this series, and her most recent release. Full of redemption, passion, and second chances, BACK HOME AT FIREFLY LAKE is an emotional read that makes is easy to believe in the power of love. This small town, peopled with strong families and friends, is a pleasure to spend time in, and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Cat and Luc get their chance at love. It is an easy 4 stars for me, and perfect for readers that enjoy a small town setting, supportive, if interfering, family and friends, and a sense of rightness that comes with finding out that you’ve ended up exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Tracey’s Review

From HOPEFUL, my first Louise Bay book, to THE BRITISH KNIGHT, her most recent, I have loved every single book that she’s written. Louise writes books that just grab me, pull me in and under, and keep me turning pages until THE END. Her characters, her stories, everything, make reading one of her books an absolute pleasure, every time.

Of course I know Violet King. Sister of Max and Scarlett King, we met her in both of their books. Especially in DUKE OF MANHATTAN, Scarlett’s story, it became very clear that Violet had her own story to tell, and that it was going to be fabulous.

Alexander Knightley is the perfect foil for Violet. He has no idea that the lovely girl on the train is about to rock his world in ways that he’d never, in all of his tightly-wound, buttoned-up mind, imagined.

These two. I loved the absolute heck out of them and their story. At first look, they couldn’t be less well-matched, but each of them really needs what the other has to offer. Seeing Violet take back her sense of self, of regaining the strength and the capability that she lost way back when, is lovely. She really comes into her own, and she is fierce. For his part, Alex couldn’t stop the tidal wave that is Violet if he wanted to. And, he does want to, or so he tells himself. But he has some changing to do, too, and Violet is absolutely the key.

Louise continues to delight and engage, and I look forward to each of her books. I’ve loved every book in this set of standalones and THE BRITISH KNIGHT does not disappoint. Fans of Louise will adore it, and new readers will become instant fans, I’d wager. Grab this book, and, while you’re at it, all the others, as well. 4.5 easy and well-earned stars for Violet and her British Knight.

“I don’t love blind dates,” I remind my friend Kat for the fourth time since she picked me up at my place twenty minutes ago. “You really didn’t have to set me up with anyone.”

“I think you’ll like him,” she says with a shrug.

“Why are we meeting them there?”

“Because Mac just finished up with work, and having him come home to get me and then go back downtown seemed unproductive.”

I nod and take a deep breath. It’s not that men as a species make me nervous. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever met a man that gave me butterflies, which I guess is a sad commentary on the state of my love life.

“You do like men, don’t you?” she asks with a raised brow and glances over at me. Kat is one of the most colorful women I know. She has deep red hair, a full sleeve of beautiful tattoos, and the outfits she wears should land her on the cover of a pin-up girl calendar. She’s super pretty.

“Yes,” I reply with a laugh. “I’m into men.”

“Perfect.” Kat smiles and pulls into a parking space at a trendy sushi restaurant near the waterfront. “And there’s no pressure. If you don’t like him, no harm done.”

“True.” I nod and exit the car, meeting her on the sidewalk. “If nothing else, I get to spend some fun time out with you and Mac.”

“Atta girl,” she says with a wink and opens the door for me, following me into the restaurant. I immediately see Kat’s husband, Mac, sitting at a table in the back of the restaurant. His friend’s back is to me, but it looks familiar.

When Mac stands with a smile to kiss his wife like he hasn’t seen her in a month, his companion stands and turns around with a smile, and all I can think is, f*ck.

So, we know that I adore everything written by Kristen Proby. And, her Fusion series? Just, yes. Strong, take no prisoner women with their own kick-butt business, the men that love every single thing about them, a series setting in the Pacific Northwest, how could I not love these books? And, when you pair all of this with the amazing 1001 Dark Nights, how could it be anything short of all kinds of steamy, sexy, and alluring?

While NO RESERVATIONS doesn’t focus on one of the Fusion ladies, per se, both Maura and Chase are just one step removed from the action. Maura is friends with Kat, the genius behind the killer bar at Seduction, Portland’s hottest, most sensual restaurant. Chase is the brother of Mac, Kat’s husband, and wine expert. See how things are going here? Yeah, so when Kat and Mac decide that Maura and Chase need to be introduced, there really is no point in trying to resist. Except that, well, these two already know each other, have sniped/flirted/ignored each other, so that Kat and Mac have their work cut out for them.

Neither Chase nor Maura is looking for a relationship. No, with histories like theirs, they’re happy to keep it short, sweet, and very, very physical. But, it’s Kristen Proby, y’all, so there is no way that this isn’t going to lead to more. And, despite their reservations (see what I did there?), their resistance, their denial, it doesn’t take very long at all for both Maura and Chase to get in deeper than they’d thought possible.

NO RESERVATION has all of the witty repartee, the sass, the steam, of the other Fusion books. But, here, as part of 1001 Dark Nights, Kristen has brought even more of the sizzle, of the spark, of the ‘um, excuse me, has anyone seen my fan?!’ Yep, to say that this little read is anything short of hot and heavy is an understatement.

A must-read for fans of the Fusion series, or, really, anythingthat Kristen has written, or anyone looking for a short, hot, sexy read, NO RESERVATIONS should be on your TBR. And, hey, bring a big glass of something cold, and maybe a fan, because you’re going to need it…

“I’d like a try.” It was the stranger with the green eyes.

Hot damn.

Of course the night would ramp up right when I announced I was leaving. I looked up at him expectantly, but he didn’t approach. I realized he was waiting for my invitation. He was definitely new. Everyone else knew Miss T was one of the most ready and willing participants in the room—to the point where some tried to take advantage of it. I never needed to issue invitations, but I often needed to reinforce boundaries.

“What are you waiting for, then?” I sat up straighter, ignoring Chuck’s grunt of complaint.

The stranger came forward with slow, swaggering steps. When he reached me, he loosened his bowtie a little before lowering himself to one knee at my side. He placed his arm next to mine on the chair, his fingers barely grazing my skin. Goosebumps sprouted up my forearm all the way to my neck, and he hadn’t even bent in to whisper yet.

When an author you love brings two of her many worlds together, you know you’ve got a winner on your hands. Fans of the both the Fixed and the Dirty Filthy worlds created by author Laurelin Paige will find just what they’re looking for in DIRTY FILTHY FIX, Laurelin’ latest entry in the 1001 Dark Nights series.

Trish Bisceglia, personal assistant to one Hudson Pierce, leads a double life of sorts. All business and straitlaced by day, wild, free, and anything but vanilla by night, she strives to keep her professional and private life completely separate. Which has worked well for her, until Nate. Nathaniel Sinclair of Reach, Inc. (yes, THAT Reach, Inc…) is more than meets the eye. A chance meeting leads Trish and Nate into an explosive, chemistry-filled liaison that soon turns into more than either one of them expected. (P.S. If you’re really really careful, and you don’t blink, you’ll see this couple for just a moment in DIRTY FILTHY RICH LOVE. Who knew one little snippet could pave the way for such a steamy duo?!)

DIRTY FILTHY FIX is a sexy and welcome little addition to Laurelin’s body of work, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Besides the obvious, the back and forth between Nate and Trish is what kept me turning pages. Laurelin can write a resolution for any dang situation, and the way that she brought everything together here was perfect for these characters. 4.5 stars for DFF, which is a must-read for Laurelin fans, especially if you’ve read her other books (although it can be read as a standalone just as well).

He doesn’t quite know what to make of Sienna, but it isn’t long before she’s changed his world, and vice versa.

I was thrilled when Camilla got her HEA in SWINK, and have been waiting for Sienna’s chance to come along. She’s always been a bit of a mystery to me, but I just fell in love with her in CRANK. She’s got the strength, sass, and self-confidence that she needs to go toe-to-to with Walker, and I loved so much the way that she broke through his walls.

Adriana Locke has segued very smoothly into this series. The Gibson Boys is a completely new group of characters, but, with Sienna being a Landry, there are plenty of Landry moments, which makes it feel like a visit home. And I absolutely adored every single one of the Gibson family, including Nana, the unquestionable boss of the whole clan. Addy’s got her work cut out for her with this bunch, and I cannot wait to see what she does with Lance, Machlan, and Peck (secret confession: he’s my favorite, mess that he is. ♥︎).

I adore pretty much any book that Addy writes, and CRANK is no exception (see what I did there?). Having read the Landry family series is not a must, as CRANK is a standalone, but it’s nice to know the references, plus, why haven’t you read them? Fans of family series, of privilege versus working class type themes, of several bad boys in one small town, well, put this on your TBR, because it hits all the marks. 4.5 divine stars for CRANK. I can hardly wait to see what Addy does with Lance Gibson when CRAFT comes along. Until then, I’ll be over here, just waiting…

So, we thought that we knew what happened at the end of DIRTY LITTLE SECRET, didn’t we, friends? Ms. Kendall Ryan dropped a bomb, then left us hanging, just sure that we knew what was what with that sexy but no-good alpha Gavin Kingsley. Now, along comes the explanation in DIRTY LITTLE PROMISE, and we’re left loving Gavin more than we did before. Is he bossy? Yes. Can he be distant? Yes. Is he still one of the sexiest alpha guys with more heart than we knew to come along? Yes, yes, yes. And then there’s Cooper and Quinn, the other Kingsley brothers. What’s a girl to do?

DIRTY LITTLE PROMISE picks right back up where DLS ended, taking us along for the ride as Emma discovers who truly holds her heart. There’s suspense, passion, and angst aplenty, making this just the kind of book that I like to read, and, yes, priming the pump, as it were, for more Kingsley brothers adventures in the future.

DIRTY LITTLE PROMISE is another 4.5 star read for me. Engaging, entertaining, and seriously steamy, Kendall has done a great job of carrying the story through to this book. The twists and turns that happen along the way keep things interesting, and just make for a more satisfying ending, and the characters continue to delight (who knew Little Miss Emma could bring a Kinglsey to his knees?!). A definite must-read for Kendall’s fans, and anyone looking for some sizzle and pop, DLP is a keeper.

I used to think she couldn’t resist me, but she had no problem earlier this week. I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve when it comes to Ms. Noelle. Let’s see if she still can. “I’ll be right back.”

“What?” my mom asks, watching me get out of the car. “Where are you going? The light’s going to turn green any second.”

I keep walking.

She sees me. Even though her pretty eyes are hidden behind big sunglasses, I can figure they’re probably damn wide right now. Reaching for the truck door lock, her finger pushes it down just as I arrive. She can kid herself like that. She knows deep down that I’ll never hurt her, but I might pressure her into giving me a little of her time.

Standing on the other side of her door, I knock. Delilah finally looks up and points at the light. It’s green. I shrug. I make the lame twist of the wrist roll down your window motion with my hand because I have a feeling she might not understand if I pretend to push a button to roll it down.

“Get back in your car, Jason,” she says through the glass.

“No. Roll down your window.” To sugarcoat it, I add, “Please.”

“Why?”

“What do you mean why? I want to talk to you and I don’t want shout through the glass.”

Huffing, the glass slides down slowly. “What is it?” She keeps her hands on the steering wheel and her grip seems to tighten just a bit.

She glances my way, so I say, “I want to see you.”

“You’re seeing me, Jason, so if that’s all there is, I’ll be going no—”

The glass starts to roll up, but I clamp my palm over it. She releases the button and looks up at me. “I don’t know what happened the other day, what turned your mood so quickly, but I’d like another chance for us to talk this time.”

“It’s not a good idea.”

“It’s a great idea, actually. All you have to say is yes.”

“No.”

My smile tilts into a smirk. “You haven’t changed much.”

“Then you haven’t been paying attention.”

If you’ve read the Kingwood Duet by author S.L. Scott, then you’ll remember Jason. Yes, that Jason, the friend, protector, brother-in-arms, sexy, got-your-back guy? Well, guess what? Jason is back, and we get to see where this bad boy is from, and what makes him tick in SOLACE, the newest release from author S.L. Scott.

I really enjoyed seeing this side of Jason, seeing him in his element, and learning about the past that had formed the man I met in the Kingwood books. Love, loss, betrayal, all of these things made Jason the man that left home for a life unknown, and carried him through until the desire to go back to his roots finally called loudly enough.

Meeting Delilah, the woman that Jason never stopped loving, gives more insight into why Jason felt so connected to Sara Jane in SAVAGE. Soft yet strong, innocent, yet not, Delilah has had more than her share of loss, too. Misplaced trust and a friend with his own agenda took the most important thing from her, and left her a very different person than the one that Jason had known. But it doesn’t take long for the flame to flare brighter and hotter than before, creating a second chance that has been years in the making.

SOLACE is full of sexy, steamy Southern charm, with characters that have many layers to them, yes, but there is plenty of the stock intrigue and suspense that kept me turning pages until I got to the very end. 4.5 sexy, sweet, suspenseful second-chance stars for SOLACE. Definitely one for fans that want a little bit of everything, and a great addition to Suzie Scott’s body of work.

There’s just something about Emma Bell that captures the attention of the Kingsley brothers. Working closely with them is proving to be interesting, to say the very least, and often downright confusing. Because two of them want her, but the darkness in one calls to her over the light in the other…

I’m a firm believer that good things come to those who wait. This is a good thing, because, goodness gracious, Kendall Ryan has gone and left me hanging off the edge of one heck of a cliff, and I am loving it.

The romance industry has just exploded, and there are so many books out at any given time that it’s sometimes hard to find the one that resonates at every level. Kendall’s writing, though, is extremely well done, and this story is just one that drew me in. I’m familiar with the theme of pleasure through power, but DIRTY LITTLE SECRET, the first book in the Forbidden Desires series, is more than that, and Kendall’s characters, the backstory, the push and pull dynamic between not one, but two of the dashing Kingsley brothers just hooked me. Kendall has done a fine job of mixing the sweet with the edgy, the courtly with the controlling, and I was engaged by this story from the first page. I just could not put it down, wanting to see what those dirty little secrets might be.

I know that cliffhangers do not work for every reader, but I don’t mind the idea of delayed gratification, if it means that the story is going to satisfy. I can’t wait for more angst, more heat, more back and forth, between these characters, and I have every confidence that Kendall will satisfy and then some when we get the conclusion to Emma’s, Gavin’s, and Cooper’s story in DIRTY LITTLE PROMISE.

Would I recommend DIRTY LITTLE SECRET to fans of romance? I certainly would, and do. Readers that like some mystery, some sweetness, and plenty of super-steamy moments should add this one to their TBR, and get ready for the reveal when the next book comes along.

So, a hooker and a cop. Seen it, you say. But, no, I say, you haven’t seen it like this, like Emma Hart’s written them in LUST, the second book in her Vegas Nights series. Trust me when I say that neither Perrie Fox nor Adrian Potter are like the others that you’ve seen. Emma has written a couple of characters with plenty of heart, lots of sass, and enough chemistry between them to power, well, Las Vegas.

Emma’s characters never fail to grab me, heart and soul, and Perrie and Adrian are some of my favorites to date. These two are all sizzle and pop from their first meeting. Polar opposites, or so it would seem, it doesn’t take too long to figure out that they’re more alike than they’d like to admit, and just what each other needs.

And those kids, though. It only seems fitting that someone as sassy and snarky and take-no-nonsense as Perrie would have a mini-me that can almost, almost out-attitude her. Lola had me laughing out loud in pretty much every scene she was in. And, Zac, Adrian’s son, is the perfect match for Lola, and the constant reminder of what a great father Adrian is. Even with all of their demons, Perrie and Adrian have done a great job as parents, and the love between them and their kids is evident.

You can’t help but fall for the characters in Emma’s books, because, beneath the story, they’re doing the best that they can, just like the rest of us. Physical attraction aside, Perrie and Adrian are parents, children, people working to get a job done, and, at the end of the day, just people. Dealing with the seamier side of life has left them both somewhat jaded and untrusting, and seeing those layers peel away the longer that they spend time together made for one of Emma’s best stories yet.

LUST is 4.5-stars worth of snark, spark, and heart-mending, and I absolutely adored it. Although it’s part of a series, it can be read as a standalone (although, why, why, why, would you want to miss the first book? Get reading!). It needs to be on your TBR, and fast. You’ll be in love before you know it.

“I typically like the bottom so I can watch—oomph,” he says, getting another elbow
from Finn. “Wide receiver. Why?”
Looking at Poppy, I can’t help but laugh as her eyes light up.

If Layla Miller knows one thing about pro football players, she knows that they’re, well, players. Layla’s learned that lesson, both from her brother Finn and his friends, and from personal experience. It’s been demonstrated time and again that, off the field, it’s no holds barred.

When Layla meets Branch “Lucky” Best, she’s determined not to make the same mistake again, the one that’s all fun and games until it’s not. And, Branch? He’s all about the good time, and Layla is at the top of his list for good times, best friend’s sister or not.

There’s not a book that Adriana Locke has written that I don’t love, and part of what makes her a favorite is that she writes so many different kinds of books. The thing about Adriana’s books is, there are layers. Branch could be just another football god, all swagger and pheromones, but that’s not the sum total of who he is. It takes life throwing a monster of a curveball (sorry, I’m mixing sports metaphors, but…) in the form of one Layla James Miller to show Branch just what’s important, and Addy does a wonderful job of helping him shine.

Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of steam, sizzle, and sexy times for our Lucky Number Eleven and his lady. But the humor, the life lessons, and the way that they navigate those unexpected detours really made this book such an enjoyable read for me. LUCKY NUMBER ELEVEN is an easy 4.5 ‘coffee cake and curveballs’ stars for me, and perfect for fans of contemporary romance with plenty of swoony, sexy, heartwarming moments.
