When Tessa Talman meets Simon Fremont for the first time, not only is she attracted to him, she’s intrigued by how different their lives are. He’s a dedicated scientist, practical, pragmatic, and grounded—while she’s a head-in-the-clouds romance author. As their relationship grows, they agree to meet in places around the world, while continuing to live on opposite sides of the globe.

Though their feelings for each other deepen, their priorities remain the same. Simon is in a hurry to be financially sound and settle down, but Tessa is enjoying her freedom and newfound success. Neither is willing to give in, but as each goodbye gets harder, Tessa begins to wonder whether fame is the path to happiness, or if she has everything she needs in Simon.

Just as Tessa finds the courage to go after her own happily ever after, the unthinkable happens, separating them in ways they never imagined.

To move forward, she must let go of the past, and determine once and for all if love is truly more powerful than the pain of goodbye.

Robin’s Review

Kismet. Destiny. Fate. How do you know if you are on the path fate has planned for you? What if there is something far greater, far more powerful, just waiting to step in? This is a theme author Christine Brae explores in her new standalone novel titled In this Life, where we are able to experience the richness of Anna Dillon’s story.

Brae introduces us to Anna at a time in her life that is filled with sadness and strife, when she flees the drama of her home life for something much different in a small fishing village of Thailand. All Anna really wants is to forget the emotional pain, so she convinces her best friend, Dante Leola, to volunteer with her on a medical mission at an orphanage. It’s on the tsunami-ravaged beaches of Thailand, where Anna and Dante meet Jude Grayson, and all three of their lives become inextricably tied together.

In This Life is a contemporary romance and contemporary women’s literature rolled into one, a journey about friendship, loyalty and love which will captivate and hold your attention until the very last page has been turned. Brae’s words are full of wisdom, both heartbreaking and joyful, both healing and redemptive. It’s an epic adventure of two souls, destined to be together, even as life sees the two of them heading in different directions.

Each of the three primary characters has endearing qualities, which is probably why In This Life became a very emotional read for me. Anna is easy for me to relate to. She experiences growth as a character because of the difficulties that she faces in her life. But In This Life is not only about Anna. This story also concerns the two men who are on this journey with her – Dante and Jude. Anna has feelings that are unique to each man, and Brae’s writing made certain that I was able to experience her feelings and emotions.

Christine Brae’s writing is the very best feature of In This Life. In This Life is Brae’s fourth full-length novel. I’m being completely honest in my assessment when I say that I have never witnessed a more dramatic improvement in writing. Brae’s writing is no longer the writing of an author who is just getting her feet wet. It’s matured, become more polished and descriptive, visceral and full of wisdom. Brae’s descriptive writing was exceptional, assisting me with visualizing scenes in my head.

I would recommend In This Life based on the writing alone, but this story about finding your destiny is what makes this novel special. In This Life is a solid 5-star novel, and I’m adding it to my list of 2016 favorites!

Synopsis

Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere,
They’re in each other all along.
RUMI

It starts out so simply. Anna runs away to Thailand, drags her best friend Dante with her and spends a few weeks away, taking on other people’s problems while getting away from her own. She meets the enigmatic Jude Grayson, and for as long as it’s clear to both of them that it ends when they leave, she thinks she’s got the perfect fling planned out.

Or does she?

Anna returns home to find that her life is no longer the way it once was, and that she can’t stop thinking about him. She learns through tragedy that nothing she’s ever believed in has turned out to be true. The worst part? The people she loved were keeping a secret from her. And that no matter what she does, no matter how hard she fights against it, every path she takes keeps leading her back to Jude.

This is a story about love, found in a faraway place by two very unlikely people. It is also a story about friendship and loyalty and fighting for what you have despite the illogical mystery of fate. With the struggle between morality and guilt, faith and acceptance, there comes a learning that even the best-laid plans are powerless against the alignment of the universe.

From the beaches of Thailand to the streets of New York, three friends, Anna, Dante, and Jude will learn the hard way that once providence steps in, there is nothing in the world that can change what is truly meant to be.

TITLE: IN THIS LIFE

AUTHOR: CHRISTINE BRAE
RELEASE DATE: FEB 01, 2015
SYNOPSIS

“Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere,

They’re in each other all along.”
Rumi
They say that life is full of choices. When you’re young and idealistic, you believe that the path you choose is the road that will lead you to your destiny.
But what if, along the way, fate decides to step in, and no amount of logic or rationality or even prayers can save you from your fortune? When the sacrifices you make, the love that you find, and the bright promise of the future are all snatched away from you, you’re left alone to pick up the pieces of your life.
This is a story about love, found in a faraway place by two very unlikely people. It is also a story about friendship and loyalty and fighting for what you have despite the illogical mystery of fate. It is a story of faith and acceptance, and learning that even the best-laid plans are powerless against the alignment of the universe.
From the beaches of Thailand to the streets of New York, three friends, Anna, Dante, and Jude will learn the hard way that once providence steps in, there is nothing in the world that can change what is truly meant to be.

EXCERPT

I lifted my head up in time to catch the questioning look in his eyes. “I have to call my mother.” I said.
“Sure, let’s get back to the hut and you can use my phone,” he replied, continuing to hold me close while smoothing his hands over my hair.
“Gray?”
“Hmm?” he answered dreamily.
“I’m a little freaked out. There’s something rubbing against my leg.”
He lifted me up gently, turned the flashlight back on, and handed it over to me. I settled my feet lightly on the sand, afraid to step on something I couldn’t see. He guided my hand and held the light a few inches above the water.
“Look closely,” he said excitedly. “They’re seahorses.” He reached his hands downwards just below the surface, enclosing them in the palms of his hands.
“Cool! Why are they tangled up in each other like that?”
“It’s their defense mechanism. Do you see how the male with the pouch is hanging on to her tail? He’s protecting her.”
I brought my face closer to the water. “Won’t they bite you?”
He laughed and shook his head. “No, they won’t. They’re harmless.” We continued to observe them in the water. “Hey, do you know what they say about seahorses?” Judeasked.
“No, but I know you’re about to tell me,” I teased, never tiring of engaging him in banter.
“That they mate for life. One mate. One partner. For life.” Jude enunciated his words, making sure to get his point across.
“That’s just a myth. Nothing, no one, mates for life.”

Robin’s Review

Insipid by Christine Brae

What would you do if you realized you were living a lie? Imagine that everything is white, bland. Imagine you just exist; you’re barely going through the motions. What would you be willing to do to bring color back to your world? Could you handle the resulting torrent of emotions? Would you be able to accept this new reality? Or would you deny it? Would you be able to make changes to your life? Author Christine Brae explores these questions and more in her new novel titled Insipid.

At forty-two years old, Jade Richmond has been promoted to a member of the executive team for a Fortune 500 company located in Chicago, Illinois. She has worked extremely hard to achieve success in her career, while also striving to remain ethical in her business practices. To those on the outside, Jade seems to have everything she could ever hope for out of life. But if you could look closely into her expressive green eyes, you would realize Jade is hiding the truth of her reality deep inside.

As a reviewer, I have chosen not to reveal much of the plot due to the way the layers of the story unfold. Instead, I choose to share my thoughts and feelings about Insipid. Christine Brae immediately pulled me into the story. In many ways, I was able to make a connection to the protagonist. I am around the same age as Jade Richmond and have had a successful career at the same company for nearly 25 years. I have been married for over 20 years, and my children are now adults. There have been moments during my life where I have felt I was just going through the motions. I think everyone experiences these types of feelings on occasions, so it was easy for me to step into the pages of the novel and place myself into Jade’s situation.

It is hard to explain the overwhelming feelings that came over me while reading Insipid. I experienced so many different emotions, crying tears of sadness and joy on occasions. There were moments that I felt anger and shock. I was delighted at times, confused at times. But with the confusion came clarity. Although the circumstances surrounding my life helped me connect with the story and protagonist, I also believe this author has strength in the ability to tell a story. Insipid truly has one of the most beautiful endings that I have ever read. I was so impressed with the way that Christine Brae brought closure to Jade Richmond’s story.

Insipid seems to be a combination of the contemporary romance and women’s fiction genres. It does not follow what I consider to be the typical pattern for a romance novel, so you will want to keep this in mind if you choose to read this novel. It is a very unique story, full of wisdom and takeaways. It is also very apparent to me that Christine Brae poured her heart into this novel. Because this story is so different, I realize that it may not be for everyone, but I want people to know that I absolutely enjoyed it! I am giving Christine Brae’s Insipid 5 stars!
