Knightly
If practice makes perfect, I should excel at pretending that Heath
Miller doesn’t affect me. That I’m immune to that wide jaw, taut body, and the
unique woodsy-aftershave-engine-oil scent that makes my ovaries explode.
Since before I could walk, he’s been my champion. My best friend. The
one problem I can’t solve. Why? If I tell him I love him, I’ll lose him and his
adorable daughter. Maybe the best Christmas gift I can give him—and myself—is
to turn in the keys to my B&B and put some distance between us.
Heath
I’ve made my share of mistakes. Lost my MIT scholarship, came home to
fix cars and romance Kentbury’s female tourists—until I wound up a single
father. For all eight years of Cassie’s life, Knightly’s been my anchor.
I’ve changed. Cassie’s the best part of me, and Knightly’s been there
every step of the way. But as Christmas lays its mantle of magic over Kentbury,
she drops a bomb—she’s following a dream to New York City. I’ve got one week to
do everything, say everything I’ve never dared. To convince my best friend to
be mine—ours—for all the holidays to come.

Prologue
Heath
I hate surprises almost as much as I hate Sunday brunch at my parents. My family and I don’t get along. It’s a cliché, but we’re like water and oil. I became everything they hate and I hate everything they represent. My parents are judgmental. During my late teens and up until a few months ago, I fucked around—a lot—in every sense.
Needless to say, I lost my scholarship to MIT during my sophomore year. The dean called me irresponsible. My parents wrote me off as a failure until I came back to Kentbury to take over my uncle’s car repair shop after he died. I try to keep myself out of trouble and off the town’s radar. I steer away from the women in town. But I do have fun with the tourists who stay at the lodge. It’s simple. They’re here for a week or a weekend. Then they’re gone for good.
“But I ran out of luck,” I sigh and look down. In the bouncy chair lies Cassie, my one-month-old baby. The fuss of black hair is covered by a pink hat. Her arms aloft as if dreaming of cuddling her mother. I slide my pinky into her open hand and watch as her fingers curl around it. I feel her soft breath on the back of my hand. Already the tension is melting
away as I watch my sweet little girl sleep in peace. She’s so innocent, she doesn’t know that our lives have been forever changed again.
“Maybe I just got lucky,” I whisper close to her ear. “You and I are going to make it work. I’ll make your proud little one.”
There’s a slight knock on the door. I kiss her tiny hand before I open it for Knightly. “That must be Knightly, coming to save the day,” I whisper to Cassie and kiss her tiny hand.
There’s so much I could tell her about my best friend, but not enough time. I only tell Cassie what’s important, “She’s going to become your favorite person. We call her Lee for short.”
When I swing the door open, I finally relax. Lee’s here. Her big
brown eyes narrow locking her gaze at me. “I need a big explanation,” she says, handing me the shopping bags she carries with her.
“Hello, Lee,” I greet her and stare at all the bags she brought as she unzips her blue parka.
“I got everything that you asked for,” she says. Bishop is bringing the big items. What do you need that for?”
Her voice is neutral, but I know her well. She’s easy to read. The expression on her face matches her mood. I know when she’s excited about something. I can tell when she’s tired or cranky. Or, like right now, when she’s upset that I’m keeping her in the dark. As she takes off all her winter gear and sets her snow boots on the plastic tray, I close the door avoiding the sight of her body.
I like to think of Lee Harris as my best friend. One of the boys. She’s the kid who I hung out with since she could walk. I endlessly practice not noticing her sweet curves or the way her long, dark, curly hair cascades over her shoulders once she takes off her hat. I’m a shitty person and can’t do relationships. I’d never do anything to jeopardize my relationship with Lee. Ever.
I tilt my head toward the living room. “Follow me.”
“Oh my God, did Santa bring me a baby?” She claps once and takes out the tube of hand sanitizer that she always carries around. Without
asking, she snaps the belt of the bouncy chair open and takes her into her arms.
“Hey, beautiful, welcome to Kentbury. You’re going to love this place.”
Cassie snuggles closer to Lee, who looks beautiful holding my baby. I swallow hard and remind myself that she’s a friend who deserves a lot more than a guy who sucks at life.
“You’re not going to ask anything?”
“The mom came to the lodge earlier, asking for you.” She sweeps my body with her gaze.
“Tall, dark hair, light blue eyes and was friends with the Lodge’s owner.”
Lee rolls her eyes and sighs.
“You and Kingston need to stop sleeping around or…” Lee touches her mouth lightly with the tips of her fingers. “Oops, it happened.”
“You could’ve warned me.” I grit my teeth.
“I could’ve.” She shrugs. “Maybe next time.”
I glare at her. She’s not funny but I don’t have the energy to deal with her banter. Though, maybe she doesn’t have much energy either because she’s not as witty as usual.
“How are you handling the news?” She asks with a serious tone, though her gaze remains on Cassie.
“I’m dealing, I guess,” I close my eyes briefly taking a deep breath. “Can you picture me as a father?”
I gesture to myself, showing her the hot mess that I am. Then, point to the apartment I live in which is above the car shop.
“I’m a fucked-up guy who can’t finish anything. I can’t even get along with my parents. What am I supposed to do with a baby?”
“Love her,” she answers.
“You should give yourself some credit, Heath. She has the best dad in the world, and you two have me and my family.”
I smile at her and say the obvious, “I can always count on you.”
Lee studies Cassie. She smiles at her, but her face looks a little saddened. Her brown eyes are slightly red and watery. Was she crying? I’m sure it’s nothing. Later, when I’m not busy with my baby I’ll ask her what’s wrong. In the meantime, I have to learn how to be a dad.
Maybe I can find a book on how to be a father online. It worked with the car shop, and so far, I’ve managed it well enough.

About Cards of Love: Knight of Wands

A chance for a sweet future, or a recipe for disaster?

Kaitlynn

My dream was to cook my way to fame and fortune, not run myself ragged keeping my late parents’ quaint Savannah restaurant afloat. My sister is useless, I’m chronically short-staffed, and even Gertie, my antiquated oven, hates me.

Then in charges Oliver, like a Golden Knight. He’s hunky and charming and makes others feel at ease. He’s earnest and kind, optimistic and extroverted. My best friend. My sister’s ex. Picking up the slack like he never left all those years ago. Making my body shiver with the lightest touch, the slightest smile. It would be so easy to let him be my knight in shining armor. But I can’t let him, even though he makes Gertie purr like a kitten.

Oliver

I practically grew up waiting tables alongside KitKat. She’s a brilliant chef, but it’s clear she’s no manager. I’ve noticed other changes in her since her letters stopped coming to me in Iraq. There’s fire burning in her green eyes—and pain.

The kiss was meant to comfort. But it explodes into searing passion so white-hot, not even the tallest, iciest sweet tea can quench it. I shouldn’t try. She doesn’t want help, especially not mine. But a kiss like that is the beginning of a promise. A promise that won’t stop until I help her find her dream.

 Michel’s Review

I have become a huge fan of author Claudia Burgoa. She has a gift of creating an interesting and emotional story with very compelling characters. Her gift of tapping into the emotional reservoir makes her stories more personal for every reader. I was excited to review My One Regret.

The first chapter of the book completely captured my attention. I became engaged with Sadie’s predicament. My heart was breaking right along with her even though I didn’t know the back story or the emotional journey that led to that moment. I just knew she was beyond hurt, she was crushed. The one thing I also knew is that she was going to survive the heartbreak because she was a strong woman and her core values would be her strength.

The story begins with a heartbreak but evolves back to the beginning when their love was new and fresh. From the moment they met to the moment they parted both Sadie and Kade were deeply connected and committed to one another. They gave each other their hearts completely. Sometimes romantic love is not enough. As human beings we are not meant to love just one person. There are different kinds of love, different kinds of relationships, and different responsibilities that go along with each relationship. Kade already had a family. His children were his first priority. His professional lifestyle had almost destroyed his relationship with his daughters and contributed to the breakup of their family unit. He has worked hard to become a responsible and supportive parent. When he’s forced to choose between his daughters and the love of his life, he makes the impossible decision. Now he has to live with his choice.

When he gets the horrific phone call and has to face the possibility that he may lose Sadie forever he begins to re-evaluate his life. Kade is in for a real eye opener and may end up living with regrets.

Claudia Burgoa once again held me captive. I love her intuitive sense of what readers want in a love story. A love story is more than about romance, it’s about life and the people who surround us daily. It’s about give and take, sacrifice and acceptance, and most of surrendering our hearts to someone else regardless of the outcome. Claudia Burgoa truly understands love.

EXCERPT:

It’s time to get back to the hotel. Fitz and I have been helping Hazel set up her apartment. Installing the sound system was the last thing on her list, and I’m almost done. But I don’t want this day to end. Not yet.

I don’t want to leave her.

I want to bask in the light of the infectiously cute smile she wears everywhere she goes.

I want to stay with her for the rest of the night.

Forever—if she allows it.

Hazel Beesley has been warming my cold soul since the moment I met her. She isn’t like any women I’ve come across. I met her the summer she came to live with her grandfather.

Everything about Hazel captured my heart from the beginning. Her big eyes, long braids, wicked smile and a smart mouth. Her luscious, full lips. The eagerness to learn and help people. Behind the professional hard shell she shows to the world, there’s a smart, sensitive, caring woman. She adores her family and helps everyone around her.

My relationship with her has been by stages. The big crush happened when I met her. Slowly, I fell in love with her, and one day, we kissed. In that instant, her air became mine, and my soul was branded with her name. Her presence calms the demons inside my head. She knows most of my secrets and my fears. Hazel held my hand while we face my most significant challenges.

My phone buzzes. It’s a text from Harrison, my oldest brother.

Harrison: Where are you?

Scott: San Francisco.

Harrison: Why am I not surprised? Are you and Hazel getting back together?

I snort. That’s the plan, but there’s a complication.

Scott: I’m working on it.

Harrison: If I could, I’d talk some reason into her, but … you fucked up, and I can’t help you.

No one can help me. I let out a long, frustrated breath. Harrison is her best friend. They are so similar. According to him, I have a hefty price to pay before she forgives me. Then, I must grovel, and maybe we will salvage something. At least, that’s what he said after Christmas.

Scott: It’s back to square one. I have to remind her how great we are together.

Harrison: That puzzles me. That the two of you fit just right. You are so different. And yet, you stayed together for a long time.

He’s right. On the surface, we don’t look compatible. However, deep down we fit perfectly. Like a key in its lock, I belong to her. It’s in the way she makes me feel. The yearning when she’s away. The joy I experience when she’s steps away from me. She holds the power in our relationship, not me.

Scott: I regret being a coward, and letting her slip out of my hands knowing that this day would come. The day she’d move back to San Francisco and see the boy she fell in love with since they were kids.

Harrison: Well, you better apply yourself before she sees him.

Jesus, I rub the back of my neck. What am I doing here?

Scott: This might be a lost battle. She already saw him.

Stretched
t-shirt, dry blood and badass attitude looked good on him. That’s nothing
compared to Harrison Everhart wearing a suit. His tall, broad, body wrapped in
a dark gray is a site I want to photograph, frame and stare at it forever. He’s
the type of man who behaves differently depending on the place and time. For
the past five hours, we chatted pleasantly about our families. Nothing too
superficial but nothing too intimate, either. If I had time to date, he’d be
the kind of man I’d choose. Easy to talk to, funny, and a gentleman.
A
refreshing touch from the guys who I hook up with when I have time to go out
with my friends. Which lately it’s been never. Maybe I have time, but I don’t
want to waste it by doing the same thing over and over again. Meeting a guy who
has little social skills, only talks about himself, and by the end of the date
is the only one who is satisfied isn’t great. I have my little friendly toys
that to do a better job and I don’t have to listen to nonsense.
This would
be a great subject for a sociology class; the interactions between humans, and
how out of touch they are with one another that dating has become a joke. What
happened to love letters? The chase is so much different now than it was back
when my parents dated. I should quit the Bureau and go back to school. Finish
my psychology degree, go into anthropology or sociology. I would enjoy doing
that more than having to jump through hoops to show that I’m capable of more
things than my superiors like to acknowledge. If anything, I can write a book
with Mom’s letters and notes.
A manual on
how it’s done.
“Everything
okay?” Harrison asks when the service car stops, and the driver opens my door. “You’ve
been quiet since we left the party.”
Define okay? My skin tingles every time you
touch me. Your deep voice makes me shiver, and dancing in your arms was a bit
torturous because everything inside me wanted you to touch more than my bare
shoulders and my waist. But yeah, I’m cool.
“Your
brother and Hazel never arrived at the party,” I comment, not disclosing that
I’d like to find out how my fake future boyfriend kisses. “Gia wasn’t there
either.”
“I’m sorry about that. If you want, I can try
to find out her whereabouts. My people can hack her phone and track her daily
activities. He smirks and winks. “We can start stalking her.”
“Stalking?”
I boom, laughing and covering my mouth when a couple walking close to us turns
to glare at me.
“Yeah,
that’s the word and you know what they say, ‘couples that stalk together stay
together.’” He grins, his blue-crystal eyes shining with the post light.
That grin
is addictive. I shouldn’t mind pretending to be with him while I’m working. A
little fun on the side, some sexy times. Sex. I haven’t had that in a long
time. So long that I can only remember what my toys can do for me. But I care.
He’s a distraction. Each time he smirks, touches me or talks with the
low-bedroom voice I want to jump him. That’s not only unprofessional but also
illogical.
“Anything
for the sake of the case, right?” My voice comes out a little throaty, needy.
He clears
his throat, looking around and poking the elevator. “We should do this again,”
he says, leaning closer to me.
“Technically,
we have to do it again.”
Have I
mentioned this is the best case I’ve ever worked on in my entire life.” He
leans forward, kissing my cheek. His lips lingering close to my ear for one too
many seconds. His musk-wood scent making my stomach flutter.
“Thank
you,” I swallow hard, turning around and stepping into the elevator. “We can
discuss our next move tomorrow.”
I poke the
elevator, looking at the doors that start closing his gaze locks with
mine.  His eyes darken, the intensity of
that gaze makes me feel vulnerable, bare. I imagine my skin searing with the
touch of his big hands. As the doors close, my phone rings. An incoming
message. Unknown number reads the screen.
Unknown: This was
the best first date I’ve had in a long time. Thank you.
