EXCERPT:

Dear Legion,

First, thanks tons for going into hiding outside the mortal world. I got to hunt you down big, bad wolf style—my favorite kind of hunting. Even better, you shacked up in an ancient realm without Wi-Fi. Now I get to communicate with you via robo-pigeons. Yay for me. BTW, the birds are “priceless,” and weren’t built to help me “score” with my “adult-boyhood crush” blah, blah, blah, so please don’t destroy the mechanical flock in a fit of pique.

Decorating hack: repurpose the robo-pigeons as knickknacks to create a steampunk vibe. Not so I can watch you through the eye-cams. (Wink.)

Second, it’s sometimes impossible to judge someone’s tone in a letter. Since I’m anti-misunderstandings, I’d like to clear things up right from the start. TONE: dry as a desert mixed with a dash of frothing-at-the-mouth rage.

Clear as crystal? Or mud?

Third, I refuse to call you “Honey,” the name your friends are using. Babycakes, I’m not your friend, I’m your potential obsession. And, to be brutally honest about the matter, I’d rather call you Sugar Tits McGyna while having my wings ripped from my back (again) than refer to you as “Honey.” A name you like only because you hate the girl you used to be. News flash: I like the old Legion. (Leggie. Legs. <– I’m trying out new nicknames for you. Did we just find a winner?) The old you gifted me with your virginity in a bar bathroom five minutes after meeting me. Or was it four? I always forget. What’s not to like about that?

Sure, you only slept with me so you could savagely murder me after I got you off, thereby protecting Aeron, the man you truly desired. And yeah, okay, I probably deserve a couple dozen more murder attempts because I later abducted your pregnant friend in an unethical-ish power play. But every couple has their issues, right?

I’m willing to attend a counseling sesh with you. Can you say the same? Please?

FYI, my crew is on stand-by, ready to kidnap abduct borrow a world-renowned shrink at a moment’s notice. All I need from you is a yes.

Lastly, I know you’ve been to hell and back—literally. I know you were hurt and abused in the worst ways. TONE: soft as a damn feather. I’m sorry for everything you’ve endured. If you really want to hurt the ones who hurt you, embrace happiness. Don’t let the past ruin your future.

Please, give me a chance to get to know the new you. A chance to help you heal, if I can. I think about you constantly, dream about you every night, and crave you every second of every day.

Yours forever,

On the hunt for a vicious killer, Kelsey discovers that the true threat lies closer than she could have ever imagined.

It’s been months since Trent Wilcox was sentenced to exile, but Kelsey hasn’t given up on finding a way to bring him home. Grayson Sloane doesn’t share her enthusiasm. Loving two men is challenging enough without them being at each other’s throats, and she is unwilling to compromise on the future she knows is meant for them.

Kelsey’s only hope for bringing them all together comes in the form of the Hell lord who insisted on Trent’s exile – Gray’s father. Lord Sloane is willing to acquiesce on Trent’s punishment if Kelsey will do one little job for him. A stray wolf is on a killing spree in Wyoming and he’s killed a number of witches in Lord Sloane’s service. The situation is made all the more complicated by the presence of a sinister werewolf cult in the area. Lupus Solum is known for being cruel to their own kind, and even worse to outsiders.

Caught between a craven wolf cult, a brutal killer, a Hell lord, and a mounting pile of bodies, Kelsey is going to have her work cut out for her. But if she can solve the case, she might have a chance to earn her happily ever after.

EXCERPT:

“How does that make you feel, Gray?” Felix Day was in full-on shrink mode as we sat in his office, the late afternoon light illuminating the soothing interior.

“It makes me feel like murdering Trent.” Gray was using his calmest tone. Well, his most sarcastic tone, but it was also calm. Mostly. He wasn’t pleased with his current occupation.

“And Trent, how does that make you feel?” Felix asked.

“It makes me feel like I’m wasting my day pass, man.” There was nothing calm about Trent. He was perfectly exasperated. It was obvious the day had not gone according to plan.

But then what had he expected? Probably not thruples therapy.

As for me, I just wanted my guys to get along. It had been a full six months since my wolf guy had killed my demon guy’s brother. Now that sounds worse than it really is, a fact I’ve been trying my damnedest to get Gray—the demon hottie—to see. Gray’s brother had gone by many names on the Earth plane, but Stewart had been his most frequent alias. On the demonic plane, he’d been known as Nemcox and had been totally evil. He’d learned a secret about the king’s son…

I’m moving too fast. Like I said, it’s been a while. I should catch you up. I’m Kelsey Owens. I’m this weird thing that happens when a lone wolf forgets to wear a condom and humps a human lady. I’m what’s known as a Hunter. It basically means that I’m pretty strong and have a lot of werewolf senses, but I can’t actually turn into a wolf, though I do have a demon arm—and that’s another story entirely. I work for the King of all Vampire, who also happens to be the king of the supernatural world. I’m his Nex Apparatus. It’s kind of like a combo sheriff and assassin, with a dash of therapist thrown in. I’m involved with a gorgeous half-demon named Grayson Sloan and an insanely hot alpha wolf named Trent Wilcox. We had a few super-sexy encounters together and then came the aforementioned murder. But I didn’t see why that had to mean the end of our threesome. After all, the king and his wife and partner had gone through a ton worse and still got it on all the time, and in fairly public places.

I might be horny. Super horny. And my bio clock had started ticking. I wanted some baby making, and I couldn’t do that while my men were fighting, hence the therapy.

“You’re here on sufferance, wolf.” Gray was using his super-superior voice, the one he used when he knew a suspect was guilty and he could prove it. In the last few months, he’d gone back to his original job. Gray is a Texas Ranger. Not the baseball-playing kind. He’s a cop of the highest order and he works in the Ranger’s specialized crimes unit. By special they mean weird shit no one else wants to work. Basically he deals with supernatural crimes.

We’re kind of coworkers when you think about it.

It was his other job that worried me. Gray is also a dark prophet. Every now and then his eyes go midnight black and he starts to speak in what I like to call prophet rap. It’s usually a jumble of crap that doesn’t actually make any sense at all until you’re on the other side of it, but it impresses the other demons. Especially Gray’s dad, and he’s the one I worried about.

“I thought I was here to discuss potential parole,” Trent shot back with a shake of his head. “I thought you were willing to talk to me and find a way to work this out.”

Trent used to be the head of the king’s security. He had a great career, benefits, job security. Then he met a girl.

Yeah, I kind of wrecked that for him. Again, hence the therapy.

“This? You refer to the murder of my brother as this? I don’t want to work this out with you,” Gray replied, sitting back. “You misunderstand me, wolf. There is no parole. The king is high if he thinks my father will allow that to happen. The only reason you weren’t killed in the first place was to keep the peace. You will never be allowed your former place. And I have my reasons for helping Kelsey see you on a regular basis. I want Kelsey to fuck you out of her system so we can go back to normal.”

We were far from normal.

“I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Felix said, taking in the three of us with an academic air. “Kelsey is dual natured, as you know. Unlike most were creatures, she’s not fully integrated. I know werewolves like to talk about their ‘wolf’ as being something that lives inside them, but that’s a euphemism. For Kelsey the ‘she-wolf’ part of her soul is separate, and she has different needs from the human portion.”

Not exactly. Honestly, the longer I live and accept the fact that I’ve got this gift, the more the she-wolf and I get along. I totally don’t lose control and try to kill people anymore. She-wolf and I kill people with purpose now, and we’re in total agreement on what we needed and that was sex.

“I’m perfectly willing to take care of all her needs.” Trent got that smirk on his face, the alpha wolf smirk. I shouldn’t find it sexy, but I do. “How about you go and talk to your father about this bullshit punishment and I’ll spend the few hours I have here in bed with our woman.”

I was actually all on board with that plan with the exception of losing Gray. I’d had a taste of symmetrical fucking and I wanted more. Not that I didn’t enjoy my sexy times with each of them, but there’s something about having four hands on my body that does it for me.

“I’ll drink to that,” I replied, flagging the bartender down for another round.

Just then some movement over Valentina’s shoulder caught my eye. A woman had just walked into the bar, her chin-length, curly brown hair bouncing with every step. Our eyes met, and she smiled like she knew me. I gave her a half smile back, which quickly faded when I realized who she was. Amber, my ex from college who’d moved away shortly after we graduated. Her hair was different, but her face was pretty much the same. The same round cheeks, full lips, pale blue eyes. Eyes that bore into mine as she turned the corner, making her way to our table.

It was then that I noticed she wasn’t alone. She had a boy with her, and when his gaze met mine, my stomach dropped.

That kid could have been my clone.

Brown hair, green eyes, same nose, same chin. He even had my same damn dimples. My heart was beating so hard, I thought it might jump right out from my throat. What the hell?

“Earth to Duke, are you paying for this round, or am I?” Valentina’s voice broke me from my panic just in time for Amber and the little boy to reach our table.

“Hey there, Duke. I was hoping I’d find you here.” Amber’s voice was just as sweet and syrupy as ever, but in that moment, it sounded to me like nails on a chalkboard. She smiled broadly at me, her hands on the boy’s shoulders, while the boy stared blankly up at me.

“Hey, Amber,” I said when I finally found my voice. “What’s it been, ten years?”

“Almost eleven.”

I nodded, my mind still spinning, and that’s when I noticed Valentina. She was sitting up perfectly straight, her lips pulled into a thin, taut line across her face. Her eyes were wide and trained on the boy’s face, her expression unreadable.

“This is Valentina,” I said, gesturing to her, but the moment the words left my mouth, Valentina stood and grabbed her purse.

“I was just leaving,” she said, quickly tucking her chair in behind her and forcing a smile at Amber and the boy.

“Valentina—”

Tracey’s Review

Another titillating amuse bouche from author Kendall Ryan, HUNKY HEARTBREAKER is full of sass, steam, and sizzle that, for all that it is a short and sweet read, will definitely satisfy Kendall’s fans. Part of the 1001 Dark Nights franchise, Duke’s and Valentina’s story is a novella in the Whiskey Kisses series, which I’ve not read, but now really want to.

Duke, for all his swagger and macho manliness, is not ready at all for Valentina’s arrival in his world. It’s definitely a case of country meets city, but, somehow, these two manage to make it work. It’s rough going at times, with the obvious differences getting in the way, but the inferno level chemistry between the two of them makes it impossible to ignore that there’s something there, and, maybe, just maybe, it’s more than just a physical thing.

HUNKY HEARTBREAKER is a quick read, but enjoyable all the same. The problem with it, like most novellas, is that I just want more story, more of the characters, maybe more of a slow burn, but Kendall has done a nice job of giving readers a story that they will appreciate all the same. 4 flaming stars for Duke and Valentina and their sexy, fun, romp of a love story.

A Gentleman for Christmas by Prescott Lane

Release Date: November 26th

AGFC_ebook_amazon_kobo_ibooks.jpg

A Gentleman for Christmas, an all-new standalone contemporary romance by Prescott Lane.

Some say “chivalry is dead.”

I don’t think so. Most women I know like a gentleman.

Protective, opens doors, treats women with respect, typically follows the rules.

But a gentleman doesn’t fall for his best friend’s woman. Current or ex.

And that’s what I’ve done.

During the Christmas season of all times — that magical time for decorations, gifts, family . . .

Yes, the girl who was off-limits for so long, who I’ve loved all my life, has come back in town and possibly back to me.

I can’t follow the gentleman rules this time. There’s too much at stake. I let her go once. I won’t let her go again.

What happens under the mistletoe, stays under the mistletoe.

Or does it?

Excerpt:

“Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife.”

Otherwise known as the original bros before hoes commandment.

I’m not advocating calling women hoes. It’s an expression, so put away your Encyclopedia of Political Correctness.

There are rules in life. The Ten Commandments were just the beginning. We have rules for everything. How to drive. How to dress. How to walk across the damn street. So why not rules for love? That’s how all this started — a set of rules between my buddies and me.

The Bro Code.

Obviously, bros before hoes is rule one. We vowed never to let a girl come between us, which meant if one of us liked a girl, she was forever off limits.

Little did I know our teenage pact would launch my multi-million dollar career. A little tweaking here and some socially acceptable rewording there and The Gentleman’s Handbook was born.

I’ve written books and given seminars on everything from how to find love, to how to propose, to how to have a successful long-distance relationship. You name it, and I’ve got rules for it. Personally, I’ve never been much of a rule follower, but that’s my little secret.

The funny thing is I’ve never been in love. Well, there is this one girl, but we won’t talk about her. It does no good to think about someone you can’t have and never will.

My lack of emotional commitment hasn’t slowed down my career one bit. Currently, I have two books on the New York Times Best Sellers List. My seminars sell out like a Drake concert.

I always find it interesting that the rules started between a group of male friends, but it’s mostly women that come to hear me speak. Occasionally, you see the poor sap boyfriend who was dragged along to listen, but for the most part it’s all women.

This time of the year is no exception. December first until January first is important for guys. Holidays are big for a lot of couples. If you don’t know what you’re doing for your lady, you better figure it out and fast. In fact, my rule is that you should be paying attention all year long.

Trust me on this. If you remember something she mentioned she liked three months ago and surprise her with it at Christmas, she’ll spread her legs before Santa even has time to slide down the chimney. Let’s be honest, that is always at least part of the goal for guys.

So my current work in progress tackles Christmas. A how-to guide for the holidays.

The Gentleman’s Rules for Christmas.

Tracey’s Review

“There are rules in life. The Ten Commandments were just the beginning. We have rules for everything…So why not rules for love? That’s how all this started—a set of rules between my buddies and me. The Bro Code.”

Jax and Skylar had been friends forever. But, as time passed, there was something more there. The problem? Jax’s friend Luke liked Skylar, too, and the Bro Code did not allow for crossing that line. It’s been ten years, and Jax has remained the dutiful friend, standing aside so that Luke could have Skylar for himself. Except…

Gentleman’s Rule — If you don’t love her, someone else will.

Now there’s trouble in paradise, and Skylar’s heading home—without Luke. And Jax will be darned if any rules will stand in his way this time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Like “I could not put it down, needed to see what happened next, was Team Jax all the way” enjoyed it. Jax is a guy, trying to do the ‘right thing,’ but, let’s face it, the heart wants what it wants, and Jax’s heart has wanted Skylar for a very long time. Gentleman he may be, but he’s human, too.

I’ve read and enjoyed several books by Prescott Lane, and this one is right up there as one of my favorites. Jax, Skylar, and their family and group of friends are fun and touching, and just what I was looking for. An easy 4.5 stars, A GENTLEMAN FOR CHRISTMAS and its message of second-chance love with a twist of bittersweet angst made it the perfect addition to my list of holiday reads, and one that I happily recommend.

EXCERPT:

“Good morning, darlin’. Could I interest you in some breakfast sausage?”

The woman turned, her long, dark curls swinging around her shoulders. A look of disgust quickly washed over her face as her eyes locked on my bulge.

Ay dios mio, you’ve got to be f#cking kidding me,” she muttered, immediately taking her briefcase from the counter and marching to the front door, her red-bottomed heels clacking loudly on the hardwood.

“What’s the matter?” I asked, stumbling after her.

“Last time I do a favor for a friend,” she said under her breath, slamming the front door shut behind her.

Favor. Friend. Beautiful woman in a pencil skirt. Charlotte’s hotshot lawyer friend from Los Angeles.

Oh f#ck.

“Hey, uh, Valencia, wait up!”

I burst through the door to find her paused on the top step of the porch. She turned sharply to look me dead on, the fire in her eyes enough to burn me straight through.

“It’s Valentina,” she spat, crossing her arms and cocking her hip to the side.

“Valentina, right. My mistake. Listen, I’m really sorry about all this. We were out late last night for—”

“For the opening, I know. I was supposed to be there, but something came up at work. So instead, I got my ass onto a last-minute redeye to make it in time for our meeting this morning, but clearly you had other things in mind,” she said, her eyes flitting to my quickly-softening cock before turning again to leave.

“No, please, don’t go. This is completely unprofessional, I know—”

“That’s the understatement of the century.”

“But I promise, if you give me a chance, we can turn this meeting around.”

“Is it still a meeting when one person shows up with his dick out?”

“Oh, trust me, sweetheart, if my dick was out, you’d know it.”

“Sure, as long as I brought a magnifying glass with me.”

I paused, standing up a little straighter. She squared her shoulders, and our eyes locked, the tension between us thick enough to cut with a knife.

If we were going to make this work, I knew I had to be the one to budge. But dammit if this woman didn’t make me want to blow my lid.

“Look, I’m sorry. Please stay. If not for me, then for Luke and Charlotte.”

Valentina sighed and put a hand on her hip.

“Fine. Put some goddamn pants on first, and then we’ll talk.”

“K. Bromberg always delivers intelligently written, emotionally intense, sensual romance . . .”

USA Today

EXCERPT:

“Remind me not to like him.”

“Like who?” she asks.

Gotta keep her on her toes.

“Logan St. Assh*le,” I say. “Guys who have cats—correction, guys who name their cat Pussy—either aren’t getting any or are using the name as a way to state they’re not gay when everyone already knows they are.”

“Is that so?”

“Yep. Why be ashamed of who you are and hide behind a cat? Just live the best life.”

There’s something I say that has her head tilting to the side again. She takes me in a little longer than expected. “It’s the former,” she finally admits.

I shrug. “Why is he an assh*le?”

“The bigger question is how is he not an assh*le?” For the briefest of moments I see a ghost of a smile on her lips, and it reminds me of how pretty she was the other day before the defense class began when she was chatting me up.

“Doggy Style?” I ask.

“That’s the name.”

“But Pussy is a cat.”

“You’re quite observant…”

“I can imagine you attract all kinds of interesting folks with that name,” I say, dismissing her sarcasm.

For the briefest of moments something flickers through her eyes and before I can put a finger on it, the emotion is gone, but it reminds me of what I saw in them the other day after class.

“Just as I’m sure you do working with SWAT.”

“Always.” I look at the cute cottage-style house. “You lived here long?”

We stare at each other in silence, and it’s almost as if she remembers she isn’t supposed to like me. Her expression and posture suddenly stiffen…probably because she realized she was smiling at me.

And f*ck if I know why it turns me on.

“It’s none of your business.”

So that’s how she wants to play it? Fine.

“Then it’s also none of my business that Pussy ran into the house about two minutes ago.” She narrows her eyes and sneers at me again. “It’s your loss, Desi.”

“What is?”

“That you don’t trust me to show you just how good I am with something wet and groomed.” And with that parting comment, I flash her a lightning-quick grin before heading to my side of the fence, while she grumbles and curses me out under her breath.

I hear her door slam.

I hear her call for Pussy again.

And all I can think about is how damn unexpected she is—and at the same time such a very welcome distraction.

I think I’m going to like my time in Sunnyville.

About K Bromberg:

New York Times bestselling author K. Bromberg writes contemporary novels that contain a mixture of sweet, emotional, a whole lot of sexy, and a little bit of real. She likes to write strong heroines, and damaged heroes who we love to hate and hate to love.

She’s a mixture of most of her female characters: sassy, intelligent, stubborn, reserved, outgoing, driven, emotional, strong, and wears her heart on her sleeve. All of which she displays daily with her husband and three children where they live in Southern California.

On a whim, K. Bromberg decided to try her hand at this writing thing. Since then she has written The Driven Series (Driven, Fueled, Crashed, Raced, Aced), the standalone Driven Novels (Slow Burn, Sweet Ache, Hard Beat, and Down Shift), and a novella (UnRaveled).

EXCERPT:

This is the third time I’ve unsuccessfully tried to get the fingerprint scanner to read my thumbprint. It’s hard trying to keep my finger steady when there are eight vodka tonics in my bloodstream and five slender fingers curled around my cock.

“Hurry up,” she slurs, tightening her grip. “I want your huge cock inside me.”

My fingers slide clumsily over the scanner again, and I silently curse myself for telling my bodyguards to wait downstairs. “Just turn around and I’ll fuck you right here.”

She giggles as she turns around and lifts the back of her sheer white mini-dress, which is soaked through from the wet bikini she’s wearing underneath. “Be my guest,” she says, looking back at me with a lazy grin.

Her ass is round and smooth, with an odd sparkle to it, like she used some kind of tanning creme with shimmer in it. Turning away from the front door of my penthouse to face her, I lose my balance and nearly tip over as I reach out to smack it. She howls with laughter as she places her hand on the wall so she doesn’t fall over.

“I’ll fuck that ass six ways from Sunday,” I say, grabbing her hips to steady myself.

I slide my hand into the back of her bikini bottoms and smile as I drag my finger forward through her moisture.

“Damn, baby. You’re wetter than a fucking tsunami.”

“Fuck me, Cash,” she begs, her voice sounding more whiny than sexy.

Not that I care. The girl has an ass like Scarlett Johansson and a face like Natalie Portman. This is the first time I’ve seen her at one of my best buddy Dean’s pool parties. This means she’s either a newbie on the scene or a Vegas tourist. Either way, she’s expendable. I don’t even remember her name. I can fuck her tonight and I won’t have to worry about ever seeing her again.

She continues to giggle as I slide my finger out of her slick pussy, then she lets out a loud hiccup. “Oops!”

I chuckle as I push her wet bikini bottoms down to reveal her creamy cheeks. “Fasten your seatbelt, because I’m about to ride you like a fucking roller coaster.”

“Just…fuck me already.” She’s slurring again.

I blink my eyes a few times when her two ass cheeks turns into four. Then I reach into my back pocket. Fuck. Where are my condoms? I turn away from her and stare at the shiny steel elevator doors. Should I go down and ask one of my bodyguards for a condom? Or should I just ask them to come up and let me into my apartment, where I have a whole fucking drawer full of them?

I shake my head. Nah, I’ll just try to open the door again. I’ll get it right this time.

When I turn around again, the hottie with the ass is on her knees. She dry heaves a couple of times into the corner of the vestibule. Then she spews milky white vomit all over the dark-gray carpet. The girl’s heaving body disappears as my mind is whisked away to a dark California beach.

The waves crash like thunder behind me. The moonlight casts a ghostly silver sheen over the water and the coarse sand. The sharp, briny smell of seaweed stings my nostrils as I press the heels of my palms into her chest, but she doesn’t respond. Doesn’t open her eyes.  Doesn’t breathe.

Pinching her nose, I slide my other hand under her neck and lift up gently to tilt her head back. Her brown hair fans out over the sand as I blow into her mouth. I can taste the cloying rum on her lips as I blast four more puffs of air into her mouth, and the beach begins to spin underneath me. I hold my hands out in front of me, as if this will stop the spinning. Then, I realize I have to keep trying to save her.

No! I should call 911.

I hastily pull my phone out of my pocket and dial the number, then I close my eyes so I don’t throw up.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“My girlfriend is ODing. I think she’s dying! You need to hurry! We’re at… Oh, shit! Where are we?”

“Sir, what’s your name and what’s your girlfriend’s name? And what did she take?”

“Cash. Cash Westbrook. My girlfriend is Vanessa Allen. The actress. She—Oh, God. She took suboxone. I think she only took one.”

I turn around to see if there are any signs sticking out of the sand or near the parking lot, something to tell me the name of the beach we’re on. But the sudden movement makes the Earth tilt and I fall over onto the sand.

“What dosage did she take, sir?”

“Fuck, I don’t know!”

“Sir, I need you to calm down and tell me where you are.”

“Oh, fuck,” I whisper, my heart racing as I stumble to my feet, my sneakers sinking into the sand as I try to get a better look toward the road. “I’m near Newport—wait! Corona del Mar! I remember now. We’re in Corona del Mar. Near the south end. Hurry. Please hurry.”

“Sir, help is on the way. Are you also intoxicated?”

“Yes,” I reply, and I can’t fight back the tears anymore. “I took 120 milligrams of oxy…and a few beers.”

“Sir, can you tell me if Vanessa is breathing?”

I fall to my knees, brushing her hair out of her face as I look into her wide, glossy brown eyes. “Her pupils are gone. Oh, fuck. Is she dead?”

“Cash, are her lips blue or are they a normal color?”

“They’re blue. Please hurry!”

The memory disintegrates into chaos. Hector—my six-foot-three-inch, 290-pound bodyguard—has my arms locked behind my back as I struggle to break free.

“Get off me!” I roar. “What is he doing to her?”

My other bodyguard, Dex, is hunched over the girl lying at my front door. The girl I was about to fuck.

“Cash, calm the fuck down!” Hector slams me chest-first against the wall.

The force momentarily knocks the breath from my lungs, but my body is coursing with adrenaline now. I’m not ready to give up. I can’t give up. Not this time.

I throw my head back and a sharp pain slices through the back of my head. The distinct crunch of my skull meeting Hector’s nose spurs me on.

“You motherfucker!” he roars, letting me go and spewing nasally curse words as he reaches for his broken, bloody nose.

As soon as he releases his hold on me, I rush Dex, sending him headfirst into the front door handle. He topples over and the smudge of blood on the stainless steel snaps me out of my rage. What the fuck am I doing?

Hector snaps his arms around my chest and wrenches me backward and slams me onto the ground, securing my hands behind my back just as the elevator doors slide open. A team of two paramedics and two policemen enter the vestibule with a gurney. The medics head straight for the girl.

A policeman with a gut that hangs three inches below his belt buckle approaches Hector and me with his hand on his holster. “What’s going on here?”

“She passed out,” Hector replies, his voice nasally and still taut with tension as he continues to fight to restrain me. “We were trying to wake her up.”

“Wha—?” The sound of her voice, weak and disoriented, is like fucking music to my ears, and my limbs go completely limp.

“Why are you restraining him and why is that other guy passed out cold over there?” the officer asks.

Hector can feel I’ve given up, and he quickly lets go of my arms. Getting to his feet, he holds a hand out to help me up, but I don’t take it. I stand on my own, fairly sober now.

“Can you tell me your name?” one of the medics asks the girl.

“Rosie,” she mumbles, and I sigh with relief now that I know her name and she’s awake. “I’m gonna throw up,” she continues as she turns her head and spews all over the other medic’s pant leg.

“You’re awake,” I say as they wheel her past me on the gurney.

She flashes me a loose grin. “I’m not done with you,” she slurs.

I try not to laugh as she makes the universal signal for a blowjob with her fist and her tongue pressed against the inside of her cheek. She’s not so bad. Maybe I won’t ignore her next time I see her at Dean’s.

“What have you two been drinking? Or smoking or snorting?” The other officer with the blond hair and mustache asks.

“I’m swear I’m fine!” Rosie whines as they wheel her into the elevator.

“Officer?” Dex’s deep voice startles me. His eyebrow is cocked at me as he holds a handkerchief on the top of his smooth bald head. “I think she clearly had too much to drink, but there was nothing illegal going on here.”

“What happened to your head?” the blond officer asks.

“I slipped in her vomit,” Dex replies, handing the handkerchief to Hector so he can use it on his nose.

“And your nose?” the fat officer asks. “You slip and fall, too? Bump into a door, maybe?”

“Caught an elbow at a party.”

Fatty doesn’t look too impressed with this lie, but there’s nothing he can do about it. They subject me to a half-hearted interrogation about what Rosie and I were drinking at the pool party—I don’t know what she was drinking, Officer. I only met her about ten minutes before we left together—Then they get in touch with the medics to make sure she’s still conscious before they roll their eyes and disappear into the elevator.

My stomach goes sour as I realize Hector and Dex just lied to two officers of the law for me, to protect me from the consequences of my own recklessness. And it’s not the first time they’ve done it. In fact, I can’t even count the number of times they’ve smoothed things over for me with the authorities. And how many times has David Nichols, the head press officer at Westbrook Oil, fielded questions about my latest scandal?

The tabloid headlines flash in my mind: CASH’S FLING RUSHED TO HOSPITAL AFTER OVERDOSE SCARE… Just like all the headlines from the past two years: CASH AND TARA’S SECRET ABORTION… CASH’S WILD WEEKEND IN CABO… CASH’S JOYRIDE ENDS IN DUI… VANESSA ALLEN DEAD.

My dad’s words echo in my head: No, you can’t get rid of your bodyguards, Cash. They’re there to protect you from yourself.

Maybe it’s time I started protecting them from me.

Buried by Brenda Rothert

Book Blurb:

Do you believe in fate?

I didn’t. I’d worked since childhood to become an NFL starting quarterback. All the blood, sweat, and tears were about to pay off with my name in the record books. Setting an NFL record was going to be the crowning achievement of my career. Hell, of my life.

But then fate, the cagey bitch, threw me a curveball I never saw coming. I ended up trapped in a doomsday bunker with four strangers, my chances at that record slipping away as days turned into months.

I never would’ve given Erin a second look. She was gorgeous, sure, but not my type. I liked women who were strong. Fearless. Resilient. Not to mention that she hated me.

But I was so wrong about her. And in that bunker, I fell in crazy, stupid love.

I thought a record would be my greatest triumph. But now, all I want is a shot with Erin. I’ve faced down massive linebackers intent on ending me. For her, I’ll go toe-to-toe with fate.

Excerpt:

I sigh softly, willing my heart to stop jackhammering in my chest, and walk over to the large, opened steel door in the ground.

Kenna white knuckles the black steel ladder that leads straight down, scrambling to get her heels situated. I wonder again why she’s wearing a business suit and heels out here.

“Do you work here?” I ask her.

She gives me a sharp look. “I’m Derek’s personal assistant.”

“Oh, got it. And he must be the football player who owns the place?”

Kenna gawks at me in disbelief. “You don’t know who Derek Heaton is?”

I shrug. “Isn’t he a football player?”

“He’s the best quarterback in the league. Also the highest paid.”

“Huh. Well, good for him,” I say dismissively.

Kenna shrieks as one of her feet slips on the metal ladder.

“You okay?” I ask her.

“I’m fine.”

I peer down into the dark hole, trying to think about anything other than going down there. Even after years of therapy, the panic is so strong I want to run away.

Just make it about the groceries, I tell myself. Think about getting the delivery where it needs to go as quickly as possible. You can do this.

I take a deep breath and then follow Kenna down the ladder. I start sweating immediately as my self-preservation instincts kick in. But I ignore it, descending the ladder to a small landing and then taking a staircase the rest of the way down.

For a moment, my fear is forgotten. The bunker is nothing like I was expecting. It’s open and expansive, the kitchen done with stainless appliances and warm wood cabinets. The floors are also wood, and there’s a large leather sectional in a living area.

“This way,” Kenna says, motioning impatiently from in front of a doorway.

I tear myself away from looking at the rich, slightly rustic décor and join her in a large white room. Fluorescent lights glow overhead, illuminating walls lined with shelves. About half the shelves are filled with supplies ranging from toilet paper to giant containers of tapioca pudding.

“Right here,” Kenna says, grabbing a clipboard and glancing down at it.

She stands in front of an empty section of shelves. I wait a couple seconds as she reads something on her list, but then I can’t take it anymore. I refuse to be down here for one minute longer than I have to.

“I’ll go get my first load,” I say, turning.

“I need it shelved in groups,” she says as I depart the room. “Keep all the peanut butter together, all the trail mix together, and so on. And make sure you fill the entire shelf all the way to the back.”

“Okay,” I call over my shoulder.

I hear male voices from somewhere in the bunker, but I ignore them, practically sprinting to the stairs out of this death trap hole in the ground.

When I get to the truck, I stuff my backpack with as much of the supplies it back hold, then grab another box to carry in my arms. Surveying the flatbed load, I realize it’s going to take at least twenty trips to get all this into the supply room.

Just great. I have to make myself go down that ladder over and over again.

As I reach the end of the stairs, I see three men in the living room area of the bunker. One is kneeling by the floor, looking at something. The other two are talking.

One of the two looks pretty young, maybe college-aged. His skin is deeply tanned and his hair is hidden beneath a baseball hat. The other one looks like a young Russell Crowe, very tall and all muscles and chiseled jaw line. He’s wearing shorts and a plain gray t-shirt.

He has to be the football player. He’s got arrogant pro athlete written all over him, from his biceps straining the sleeves of his shirt to his perfect smile.

She closes her eyes as he carefully puts everything away, then he shifts, lifting her and settling her in his lap. He does this, sometimes. A lot, actually.

They have very few boundaries. Between their friendship and the hours they spend working together, Lola spends more time with Tiny than almost anyone, and sometimeswhen hes carelessly affectionate, drawing her into him on the couch when shes half-asleep, when he carries her to the breakroom for sleep and makes her favorite on his nights to cook at the station, the way he always seems to be looking after herit makes it very hard to remember that theyre friends, that Tiny doesnt see her as anything more than the tomboy Dempsey befriended that never did go away.

Shes ok with that, with being the tomboy sidekick. She knows Dempsey and Tiny and even Cal adore her, knows she has a place in their little groupand shes ok with that place being the one of the guys’ friends.

Sometimes, though, moments like this when his hand strokes broad and warm protectively over her back and his chin nudges into her hair, and she feels small and shelteredmoments like this, she hates it. Its hard to remember her boundaries, and what she isnt, when he holds her like shes precious.

You ok, Lo?he murmurs.

She nods against his chest. We should go back, she mumbles.

Take your time. Theyre not gonna miss us.

Were half the groomsmen, Tiny. Theyre gonna miss us.

He laughs this soft huff that makes her belly squirm. Everyone says that Tiny is quietthat he doesnt talk, that hes closed off.

And she knows a lot of it is just that shes been friends with him for so long that shes slipped past that silence and reticence, but she sees him, with Dempsey and Cal, with their other friends, where hes content to be quiet and observe.

Hes talkative with herlaughs with her, his placid calm mask cracking to reveal the wide smile thats sarcastic, warm, genuine, and soft.

She wants to believe that means something.

She knows she needs to get up and get some distance because the wedding and the hand still sweeping over her back is fucking with her head.

You ready?she asks, shifting away. His arms tighten for a moment, steadying her before he releases her entirely and Lola scrambles out of his lap.

Tiny is watching her, eyes dark and patient as he nods, standing. Yeah, Im ready. Lets go.

PUCKEDLOVE_full_trim (1).jpg

As an NHL player, relationships haven’t been my thing. Shrouded in secrecy and speculation, they never last very long. But then that’s what happens when you require an NDA before the first date.

Until Charlene. She’s like a firefly. She’s elusive, and if you catch her she’ll burn bright, but keeping her trapped dulls her fire and dims her beauty.

I caught her. And as much as I might want to keep her, I’ll never put the lid on her jar. Not at the risk of losing her. So I’ve let her set the rules in our relationship.

But as long hidden secrets expose us both, I discover exactly how fragile Charlene is, and how much I need her.

We’re all broken. We’re all messed up. Some more than others. Me more than most.

Excerpt:

You’re turning twenty-six. It’s your champagne birthday, so we need to do something fun.” Violet bounces, making her boobs shake and my mimosa slosh perilously. “It should be themed! We can all wear leather chaps!”

“Could you be any more cliché?” I roll my eyes. “Just to be clear, Darren doesn’t own chaps.”

“Just a ball gag and a mask with no eye holes, according to Alex.”

And we’re back to my sex life. I knew I was getting off so easy.

I wonder if Darren is catching this kind of heat today. I seriously doubt it’s worse than what I’m getting since I don’t think his friends are likely to push his buttons, but I’ll have to ask when I speak to him next. I’m not sure when that will be, either. The message I sent about Gertrude was pretty straightforward and doesn’t necessarily require a response. Maybe I should’ve worded it differently.

Sunny raises her hand, like we’re all still in middle school and she’s waiting her turn to speak. “Wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous? You wouldn’t be able to see where you’re going.” Her eyes widen, and she looks around the room. “And what’s a ball gag?”

I honestly love that Sunny has grown up in this highly overinformed society and still manages to be innocent.

“Yeah, Char, wouldn’t a mask with no eyeholes be dangerous?” Violet props her fist on her chin and smiles. “And please, do explain what a ball gag is.”

“I’m not sure you really want the answer to that, Sunny.” Poppy gives me a look I can’t quite decipher.

Sunny twirls her hair around her finger. “Why not?”

“Where’s the harm in a little bondage-sex education? It’s not like Miller’s ever going to go out and buy either item for her. First of all, Alex would murder him, and secondly, I don’t think that’s Miller’s thing.”

Sunny’s face lights up, and she does jazz hands. “Oh! I think I know what Miller’s thing is!”

Lily grins. “Eating your cookie?”

“He really likes to do that, a lot. When my belly gets too big I’ll have to watch from the mirror.” She gets a faraway look in her eyes. “But he has another thing! Kind of like how you and Randy are always getting it on in bathrooms, except I think it’s a bit more sanitary.”

“And it doesn’t cause thousands of dollars of damage,” Violet adds.

Lily throws her hands up in the air. “That sink was already falling off the wall. It’s not my fault it broke!”

“That was one expensive orgasm,” I say.

“And Randy says it was worth every penny.” Lily’s smile is devious as she bites her knuckle, then turns to Sunny. “Anyway, back to Miller’s thing.”

Sunny wiggles around excitedly in her chair. “So Miller paints my toenails for me.”

“Miller’s thing is painting your toenails?”

“Yes. Well, no. I think he likes my toes.” Her fingers go to her lips, and she looks around the room, her cheeks flushing.

“Say what now?” Violet asks.

”Sometimes he kisses them.” She covers her mouth with her palm and says something unintelligible.

Violet sits forward in her chair. “Hold on a second, does Buck have a foot fetish?”

“Um, I don’t know.” Sunny looks worried now. “Is that weird? Is it, like, mask with no eyeholes kind of weird?”
