Series: Prescott Series #5

From the author of the On the Line and Fire on Ice hockey romance series comes a sultry novel featuring a brooding NHL player who’s hell on skates—and the no-nonsense woman who forces him to clean up his act.
Miranda: Even though I’m broke, putting myself through college, and working two jobs, I’m trying to make the best of it. Meanwhile, Jake Birch, hockey’s hottest bad boy, lives in a luxury hotel in downtown Chicago—and still complains about every little thing in his penthouse. But after I tell him off, instead of getting me fired, Jake requests me as his personal housekeeper. Then he starts flirting with me. Only I’m not flirting back . . . at least, I’m trying not to. Did I mention that he’s hockey’s hottest bad boy?
Jake: I’ve met the best woman at the worst possible time. Miranda is the fire to my ice—a sexy, charmingly candid spark who breaks down my walls and reminds me what it’s like to feel again. But I’m being forced to date my team owner’s daughter to keep my job, so I can’t be caught with Miranda. Still, we’re getting closer—until Miranda finds out about my “girlfriend.” And that’s not the only secret I’ve been keeping. But Miranda’s the one I want . . . even if she doesn’t believe me.

Tracey’s Review
Brenda Rothert has proven time and again that she knows how to write a hot hockey story. Alpha heroes, heroines that range from broken to strong and sassy, and always a love of the game, her books never disappoint.
HOOKED is Brenda’s newest book and, while all of the usual suspects are here, there is something more, too. Jake Birch is just as alpha, just as hot, and, like other of Brenda’s guys, he’s got baggage. Gutted by the loss of his brother, he’s cut himself off emotionally from everyone and everything, interested only in scoring, both on and off the ice. Finding himself falling for the strong, sassy, take no crap woman cleaning his room at his 5-star hotel is not on his radar. But, fall he does, because he truly has never met anyone like Miranda Carr.
Miranda is one of my favorite of Brenda’s ladies yet, and another solid example of how she continues to grow at her craft. Sure, Miranda’s suffered infidelity and heartbreak like the rest of us, but she’s strong. A great family life, really smart, hardworking, and savvy, she doesn’t need to rely on anyone to complete her. But what made HOOKED such an enjoyable read is the way that she and Jake do come to realize that it’s okay to have a soft place to land, that it’s good not to have to take life on on your own. And, another kudo to Brenda for not having the relatively speedy progression of their relationship result in insta-sex. It’s really nice to see a strong, sexy guy that literally has ladies throwing their panties at him to want to take things more slowly and wait and build a solid emotional relationship.
So, my take? HOOKED is everything that I’ve come to expect from one of Brenda’s books, and more. An easy and engaging read that tugs on the heartstrings and steams up the windows, it’s 4.5 sexy, emotional, HEA stars, and I’m happy to add it to my list of books that you should read.

Michel’s Review
Hooked is the first book I have read by Brenda Rothert. This novel was right on mark with the title, I was hooked in the first chapter. The story was engaging with well developed characters that were easy to bond with as a reader. The writing was consistent and the pacing was perfectly synchronized .
First impressions can be misleading. For Jake Birch and Miranda, their first encounter was not one that left a positive impression.
Miranda is a college student working two jobs to make ends meet. Her job as a hotel maid is demanding and at times degrading. When she is assigned the penthouse suites it is a bit stressful. Her boss demands perfection. Soaps and toiletries must be lined up in perfect order, vacuum lines need to be perfectly straight, and dusting must pass the white glove inspection. The suites must be cleaned to perfection while the guest is out.
Rule number one is broken when Miranda encounters Jake Birch, the egotistical NHL Hockey Player living in one of the suites while his apartment is being remodeled. Rule number two is broken when she engages with the guest. This leads to rule number three being broken, franternizing with the guest.
Jake and Miranda build a solid friendship that leads to more. Both have issues that hinder their budding romance. Jake has relationship issues that stem from his family life. Miranda has been cheated on and has trouble trusting.
As the two get to know one another better not only do they develop a deep abiding respect for one another, they also begin developing deep feelings for one another. They are both willing to take a chance even though their past issues scare them.
In any good romance story there are always obstacles the characters have to get past before they can truly find their happily ever after. Jake and Miranda have more than their issues to deal with. They have hectic schedules that conflict, team politics, work rules, and a psychotic admirer that could ruin Jake’s career. Jake and Miranda found positive ways to handle all the conflicts. They were willing to work for their relationship.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It had a very realistic feel. I easily connected with both characters. I have become a Brenda Rothert fan and intend to read more of her books.

Michel’s Review
The Wilde Players Dirty Romance Series by A. M. Hargrove & Terri E. Laine has another all-star athlete to add to their dirty romance player list. This time it’s a female athlete racking up the stats for the Wilde Players team.
Riley Wilde ( Ryder Wilde’s twin sister) is at the brink of becoming one of the greatest female golfers on the circuit. She is preparing for a charity golf event and needs a caddy. Her cousin Fletcher’s best friend that she has known since childhood has volunteered to caddy for her while he is looking for a new job. Mark James may be the sexiest caddy on the course. Riley has had a thing for him since she was a teenager. Now she has the opportunity to live out her fantasies while doing what she loves.
Riley and Mark are teeing off with a bang. They are perfect for one another on and off the course. They want to take this relationship to a permanent level. Riley’s coach feels differently. Riley’s ex professional golfer is trying to win her back. They are making it difficult for Riley.
Mark is also struggling with the next step in his own career. He has been offered a great job that could cause issues between him and Riley. The separation and distance would make it impossible to make the relationship work.
They are both at the cusp of something great in their careers. They are also at the cusp of having something greater, having something that last forever. What choice will they make?
I have to say that I hate golf. When I began reading this book I thought I would lose interest quickly. A. M. Hargrove & Terri E. Laine did a fantastic job combining the sport of golf and romance. It was a fast, delightful story that focused on romance.
I would highly recommend Hooked by A. M. Hargrove & Terri E. Laine.

Tony doesn’t have much to say this morning. He dismisses the staff and I stifle a groan when I look down at my assignment sheet and see I’ve got the penthouses again.
Crap. I still feel guilty about the shirt I ruined in one of the penthouses yesterday. I also don’t want to run into another naked woman.
I roll my cart of cleaning supplies onto the service elevator and debate whether I should knock out Jake the stripper f*cker’s room first or put it off ’til last.
Might as well get it out of the way. I knock on the door and announce myself more loudly than usual.
“Housekeeping! Housekeeping coming in. Are there any naked people in here? Hello?”
Nothing. I stood in the middle of the massive suite and look around. There’s a glass on the counter and a gray sweatshirt thrown over the back of a chair.
“Hey.”
The sound of a deep male voice makes me jump and screech. I actually screech, the cry caught in my throat before it escapes sounding more like a loud wail than a scream.
A tall, well-built man is leaning backward out the bathroom door, just his head and shoulders showing.
“What the hell?” I put a palm on my chest and will my heart to resume its normal pace.
“This is my room,” the man answers.
“Yeah, but . . . didn’t you hear me announcing myself?”
He steps out of the bathroom wearing nothing but a white towel around his waist and I see that “well built” doesn’t even begin to describe him. His arms, chest and stomach are ripped. I didn’t even know it was possible to have so much definition on ab muscles.
“You like the view?” he asks, giving me a cocky grin and glancing down at his bare stomach.
“Uh . . .” I clear my throat and look up at his eyes, which are a bright gray-blue. “No, I just . . .”
His smile slips away. “What?”
Apparently it’s been too long since I saw a man in a nothing but a towel. I can’t even think straight right now.
“No,” I repeat, clearing my throat.
“No, you don’t like the view?”
“It’s okay, I guess.” That’s a lie, but I’m pretty sure this guy’s self-esteem will survive.
He hmm’s with amusement. “Want me to drop the towel so you can get a closer look?”
“No. No, definitely . . . no.” I shake my head for emphasis.
“Okay,” he says, arching his brows and giving me a look that makes me sure he thinks I’m crazy. “Yes, I heard you announce yourself, but I need to talk to you so I didn’t want you to leave.”
Oh God. He knows I stole his shirt.
I give him an expectant look, trying to decide if I should own up to it or deny it.
Deny, deny, deny. I can’t afford to lose this job.
“You guys f*cked up the stuff I requested,” he says, walking over to the suite’s kitchen area.
I follow him, not noticing the outline of his very nice ass against the towel. Not noticing it at all.
“I don’t want liters of Evian,” he says, gesturing at the bottles of water on the counter. “I want normal sized bottles. Sixteen ounces or whatever. And this”—he holds up a bottle of amber alcohol—“is not gonna work. I’m not a frat boy. I asked for Evan Williams 23 and I want Evan Williams 23. I drink a shot of 23 after every win. This is really important.” Not missing a beat, he moves on to the next thing. “I also need Irish Spring soap.”
“Irish Spring?”
He gives me an annoyed glare. “I’ve used that soap since high school. I hate that flowery shit you guys have in your bathrooms.”
“And you want us to get these items for you?”
“Right. I’ll pay for everything, plus your time. I’ve got a rigorous schedule and I don’t have time to run around shopping. My housekeeper usually takes care of this stuff.”
Wow. I can see why this guy hooks up with random strippers. What woman would want to put up with him long term?

Tracey’s Review
Absence doesn’t always make the heart grow fonder. When you’ve made someone’s life a living hell, they’re usually not happy when you turn up again…
Once an angry kid bent on making everyone else as unhappy as he was, Simon is now a professional footballer (rugby player). Embarrassed by his treatment of his step-sister, and more than a little enamored of her, he’s returned home to make amends. But when Emilia learns who the benefactor of the community youth center is, she wants no part of him. It’s taken years for Emilia to put aside Simon’s callous treatment of her, and only now is she secure in who she is and what she’s doing with her life. She’s not about to forgive and forget so that Simon can feel better about himself. But this is not the Simon that she remembers and dislikes. Determined to change her mind, he is set on making her see that he’s changed, and sparks are soon flying between them.
I enjoy reads about forbidden or secret relationships, so HOOKED worked for me. I actually liked Simon, and could appreciate how important it was to show Emilia how much he had grown and how much he cared for her. Not only was he super-hot and a genuinely nice guy now, he was pretty darned philanthropic. Once her initial lingering dislike was dealt with, Emilia was able to see Simon for how he was now, and to form a new relationship with him.
This was a steady read, with plenty of heat and heart. It’s an easy 3.5 stars for me, and I would recommend it for fans of sports and/or ‘secret love’ books. I look forward to reading more by Iris Parker in the future.
