Laney POV

“Hi, I’m Ash. Are you by yourself?”

It was hard to be sure over the pounding music, but it sounded as if he had an accent. Something Eastern European, perhaps Russian? Polish?

I gave him a polite but closed smile, a cool smile that hid all warmth, a smile for slow servers and rude cab drivers. A smile for men I didn’t trust.

“No. I’m here with my friends.”

The man looked around him, then shrugged theatrically. “I don’t see them. Would you like to dance?”

And he held out his hand, obviously assuming that I would say yes.

I laughed.

“No, I’m not dancing.”

He frowned, his hand still suspended between us. “But you like to dance?”

I stopped laughing and stared, my gaze sinking into his, puzzled, annoyed.

“What makes you think I like to dance?”

He shrugged again and his hand fell to his side.

“You’re in a nightclub, and you’re not drinking. So you must be here to dance. Please, dance with me.”

He held out his hand again, but I shook my head impatiently. “Then go find someone who will dance with you.”

His eyes widened with surprise, and then he grinned as he leaned on the table, his perfect face inches from mine. “Maybe I want to dance with you.”

“Then you’ll be waiting a long time.”

He cocked his head to one side and I noticed a small beauty spot, shaped like a teardrop beneath his left eye—a perfect imperfection. Up close I could see that he was younger than I’d thought, younger than me perhaps, maybe early twenties. My eyes dropped to his lips and then to his throat. I could see a thin silver chain around his neck.

“I’m a good dancer,” he said, looking almost wounded at my continued refusal.

He wasn’t lying, but my anger, smoldering beneath the surface, ignited.

“I’m not dancing!”

“But everyone comes here to dance,” he insisted, his intense dark eyes so focused, it was unnerving.

“Not me,” I insisted.

He was making me anxious now and I glanced around for my friends.

“You’ll have a good time.”

“I don’t doubt it,” I snapped, losing patience. “Your last friend seemed to enjoy herself immensely.”

A dull red flooded his cheeks and he looked away.

His reaction surprised me. I’d hurt his feelings, but I wasn’t sure why.

“Maybe I’d like to dance with a pretty girl for a change,” he said softly, glancing up at me from beneath long dark lashes.

Synopsis

Miles Stephens is a young actor from London. Out of work, unemployable, and fired from his last job, he unexpectedly gets the chance to star in a big-time Hollywood movie.

The film is a great success, propelling him to worldwide fame – but when the dream doesn’t match the reality, he turns to Clare, lifelong friend and girl next door.

Clare knows two important facts: when you break chocolate, the calories fall out; and that she’s totally in love with clueless Miles.

Excerpt

Clare

Mum and Dad were out at Aunt Paula’s party, so I had the house to myself.

I was glad of that, because I wanted to wallow. Preferably with chocolate. I got lucky when I found a Black Forest gateau that Mum had bought to celebrate with Prue, and proceeded to stuff my face. I ate well over half of it. A generous half. The kind of half that a miserable sod might call three-quarters. Whatever. I felt full and nauseous.

All I needed now was a sappy love story on the TV, and I was all set for a classic wallow in the time honored tradition.

The evening had been a complete and utter nightmare. From the moment Lilia had arrived, everything had gone wrong. And then she’d dragged him off to her lair, and when he came out again his shirt and tie were undone, and he had lipstick on his cheek. It was soooo obvious what they’d been doing. Especially when she followed him out, a smug smile pasted across her ugly trout pout.

She’d told me she’d get him back—it looked as though she was right. I really didn’t think he would have succumbed that quickly. I hated being proved wrong.

So I was as irritated as all hell when some bastard rang the bell and knocked on the door.

The last person I expected to see was Miles waiting on the other side, looking ridiculously beautiful and debonair in his tailor-made tux.

I, on the other hand, had changed into sweatpants and an old t-shirt. One of his. Oh, and I had crumbs down my cleavage.

The cold air rushed in as I stood in the hallway, my mouth open more widely than the front door.

“You left,” he said.

“You were busy.”

He frowned. “Can I come in?”

“If you want.”

I let the door hang open, then turned my back and headed into the warmth of the cozy living room.

I heard him close the front door and follow me inside. It had been a long time since we’d been in this house together.

He stood awkwardly while I gestured for him to come in, my eyes fixed on the TV.

After a moment’s hesitation, he pushed the living room door shut and hovered near one of the armchairs. We were alone together at last.

“I missed you,” he said, softly.

And I didn’t know if he meant tonight, or the last few days.

I folded my arms tightly in front of me and tried to smile.

“Yeah, me, too.”

He rubbed his head as if it ached, and took a step toward me.

I backed away, knowing that I’d crumble if I let him touch me. And I couldn’t go back to living like that.

He looked hurt and bewildered as I moved to the other side of the room, and slumped down onto the couch.

“You didn’t wear your bracelet,” he said, quietly.

“What?”

The pain in his voice tore my eyes away from the TV screen that I was pretending to watch.

“The bracelet I gave you—you’re not wearing it.”

“Oh…”

I couldn’t meet his eyes.

“Clare, I know I’ve been an idiot…”

“Yeah, you have. But that’s okay, I’m used to it.”

I was letting him off the hook, and he knew it. He gave a small smile.

“Around you I just seem to open my mouth to change feet,” he agreed.

There was an awkward silence. We’d never been uncomfortable sharing the same space, but everything had changed.

“So,” he said, shoving his hands in his pockets, “how’ve you been?”

“Bloody hell, Miles! You make it sound like you haven’t seen me for a year. I saw you a couple of hours ago.”

“Feels longer.”

True.

When I didn’t respond, he sighed heavily and went to lean against the wall by the window, staring at the wintry street outside.

I fiddled nervously with the hem of my … his … my t-shirt.

I didn’t want him here.

Except I did. And I didn’t.

“Why did you leave like that?” he said, his voice soft and a little husky.

So fucking clueless!

I felt a spike of anger. “You don’t get it, do you?”

He shrugged helplessly.

“No, I don’t. Not really.”

In that moment, I realized we were never going to square this circle. There was no point prolonging the agony.

“Well, it doesn’t matter anyway. I just … I think you should go now.”

I hated saying the words and Miles looked stunned, but a tiny germ of self-preservation was forcing its way to the surface.

“What? Now? But…” his words ended abruptly, and he rubbed the back of his neck in a familiar gesture of frustration. “Please, Clare, I’m trying here.”

I held back a sigh.

“I know. It’s just … better if you go.”

His expression morphed into one of anger.

“Why did you even bother coming tonight if you don’t want to talk to me?”

Fury, long held back, flared inside me, and I pointed an accusing finger at him.

Michel’s Review

Dazzled by Jane Harvey- Berrick is a charming friends to lovers and Hollywood romance.  I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was not the standard Hollywood type romance because this book starts at the beginning of stardom and how difficult the climb to the top is.

Miles and Clare have been friends all of their lives.  They are completely different types of personalities.  The yin and yang to one another.  When Miles has a downfall in the London Theater scene it looks like his acting career is at an end.  As the old saying goes, when one door closes another one opens, applies to Miles acting career.  He is offered to read for a part in an upcoming Hollywood teen movie.

Miles lands the part and has to leave London and Clare behind.  He’s sucked into the Hollywood world and is trying not to drown in a world of sharks.  When he brings Clare across the pond to help him maneuver his way in the new world, the dynamics of their relationship begins to change.  When Miles finally opens his eyes and sees Clare as a woman rather than his best bud, it may be too late.

Clare has finally taken her blinders off where Miles is concerned.  Going to Hollywood as his assistant was a huge mistake.  It’s not her world.  Miles is no longer her Miles.  She has finally realized it’s time to wrap it up and head back to London to build her own life.

It takes a huge Hollywood scandal and two meddling mothers to bring these two back where they belong.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dazzled.  It was a fun, witty, and sexy Hollywood romance.  I loved the English charm and dry humor that was prevalent throughout the book.

Jane Harvey-Berrick always delivers a good romance book.

The motorcycles circled the stadium like gladiators, or maybe like men jousting on horseback in days gone by: charging at each other, daring each other, until eventually they were ringed around the outer fence, each preparing for their first jump.

Zef went first, blasting off the ramp, followed a split second later by Tucker in the opposite direction, and I was so certain they were going to crash in the middle, I screamed and closed my eyes.

Aimee squeezed my hand hard, causing me to wince. I opened my eyes just in time to see Kes leaping through a circle of fire, the flames glancing off his helmet.

On and on it went, higher, faster, closer. Sweat trickled down my body, pooling under my armpits, leaving me drenched and weak.

The engines revved and hummed, and then they all charged together, a flying tower of men, with Kestrel cartwheeling over the top of them.

The crowd screamed and clapped and cheered, and Aimee and I stood up, shrieking with them.

“Oh my God!” I yelled over the noise. “I nearly had a heart attack!”

Aimee laughed and wiped her eyes.

“Every time,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “Every time.”

I followed her back to the RV where the guys were peeling off their sweat-soaked leathers, standing in their underwear, huge smiles plastered across their faces.

Tucker scooped me up in a sweaty hug, his hot skin slick to the touch.

“You are amazing!” I said honestly, a relieved laugh breaking out of me. “Stinky, but amazing!”

He laughed loudly, his head thrown back, his eyes crinkling with happiness, and then he kissed me, deeply.

Michel’s Review

Ladies and Gentlemen, Children of all ages… Welcome to the Greatest Show on Earth! You are about to witness the most exciting … death defying show of the century! Are you ready for the Donohue Daredevils? Let the show begin!

Roustabout by Jane Harvey- Berrick is the third book in the exciting Traveling Series.  The Traveling Series is based upon the lives of carnies and their families.  Their lifestyles and free spirits are captivating.  Their sense of honor and code that they live by is just as unique as each individual that is a part of their world.  Their world is quite different from the normal lifestyles that most people live.  They march to their own beat.  Those who are part of their world are loved fiercely.  Jane Harvey-Berrick created a series that will capture the readers hearts, imagination, and awe.  She has brought that special magic to our hearts.

The Traveling Series features the electrifying daredevil stunt riders that tour the country with the carnival.  Roustabout can be read as a stand alone romance or in series order.  I would highly recommend reading this book in series order because each and every book in this series is sensational.

Tucker McCoy is the fun loving, easy going, manwhore of the daredevil riders.  He has a different lady in every town.  He’s just as famous for his bedroom endeavors as he is for his death defying stunts.  His only purpose in life is to ride his bike and please the ladies. He doesn’t believe in love, commitments, or relationships.  The only thing he is committed to is his daredevil team and his carnie family.  When he meets Tera Hawkins, the half sister to his teammate, rules may be broken.  He may be tempted to break the rules and hook up with his teammate’s sister. She may be out of his league but she is perfect for his bed.

Tera Hawkins is not a part of the carnie world.  She has been brought up as a privileged princess.  Her father is a powerful Senator with a sketchy past.  Part of his sketchy past includes two brothers she never knew she had.  She is determined to become a part of her brother’s lives and embrace the family her prestigious family doesn’t want to acknowlege.  Getting to know her brother Kes opens a whole new world for Tera.  She is getting to know his world and the people that are important to him.  She didn’t count on Tucker McCoy, the charming daredevil rider.

Their lives may be worlds apart but the heart wants what the heart wants.  You can’t pick who you fall in love with.  The only thing you can do is find a way to make the impossible work.  Tera and Tucker have a hard road to travel but the journey is worth every loving moment.

Once again Jane Harvey-Berrick wrote an emotional and exciting story.  I was glued to the pages and experiencing the magic until the very end.

I highly recommend Roustabout and The Traveling Series.

The Traveling Series has made the 2015 Favorites List.

Can one person be my home?

I saw the Ferris wheel first, lit up in the twilight, the simple white lights making the huge steel structure seem almost ethereal. Without conscious thought, I touched the necklace that I never took off, my fingers stroking the tiny Ferris wheel set with a diamond at the center.

As I sat up straighter in my seat, I saw Kes’s lips curve upwards, although whether that was because he could sense my excitement, or because he was in a place that felt like home, I couldn’t say.

The fair wasn’t open yet; instead it lay dormant, the wide avenue of the midway with its silent stalls and unplayed games, its tricks and delights, waiting to unleash its pleasure on the paying public. It was a world within a world, a community of others, where being different was celebrated, expected, valued. It was also painted with a new face, hiding a darker history behind arcade games, glitz and glamor.

I rolled down the window and imagined that I could smell the faint scent of the fair: hotdogs, onions, cotton candy. I was transported back over a decade, to the first time I’d visited the carnival, the first year I’d met Kes. It was magical to me then, and even though Kes had been the one to show me the puppet’s strings behind the illusion, the magic had not lost its power. I was home.

Kes steered the car around to the staff area, and I realized for the first time how vast this fairground was.

“Kes,” I breathed. “This place is huge!”

“Yeah, one of the bigger ones,” he said nonchalantly.

We were still driving around the perimeter.

“How big are we talking?”

He shrugged. “Uh, 550 acres, give or take. Almost a square mile.”

“Wow! And the arena where you’re performing?”

He looked at me sideways. “Ten thousand people.”

My jaw dropped open, and it took me several tries before I could get the words out.

“Ten thousand?

He scratched his thumb over his eyebrow. “It’s not sold out. So, maybe eight or nine thousand.”

“Oh my God! Ten thousand people are coming to see you? That’s crazy!”

He gave me a wry smile as I babbled.

“I mean, not crazy! Of course not! That’s great! In fact, it’s freakin’ awesome. Ten thousand people.” I couldn’t get my head around it.

“Yeah, it usually gets sold out on the last day.”

I gulped. “How … how many days are you doing the show?”

Kes grinned at me. “Three days.”

I stopped speaking. I literally stopped speaking.

“I never thought I’d live to see this day,” he laughed. “Aimee Andersen is speechless.”

Michel’s Review

The Traveling Duet series by Jane Harvey-Berrick is one of the most powerful and beautiful love stories I have ever read.  Aimee and Kes captured my heart.  These two extroardinary people found a love that only happens once in a lifetime.  They overcame so many obstacles throughout their relationship and came out stronger.  They grew as individuals.  They became a stronger devoted couple.  Their devotion to one another is the glue that held them together.

Traveling Man blew me away.  I was anxious for the sequel to the story, Traveling Woman to release.  I wanted Aimee and Kes to find a way to make their own happily ever after.  I was afraid that the author was going to take the easy way out, find an easy solution, and make the magic in their lives look easy.  I was afraid that the story was going to end on a predictable happily ever after note ( which still would of been an  excellent ending for this couple ), but I wanted to see more of who they were and how they were going to make this impossible relationship work.  I wanted more for them than the ordinary ending.  I wanted SPECTACULAR!  Readers I can honestly say that Traveling Woman was….

SPECTACULAR

BRILLIANT

PERFECT

WONDROUS

MAGICAL

BREATHTAKING

PHENOMENAL

ABSOLUTELY RIGHT FOR AIMEE AND KES

I am not going to give too many details for this book.  It is a love story that every reader should experience.

I will say this, Aimee and Kes proved there was magic as long as they loved each other.

Kes truly amazed me.  Not only was he a phenomenal showman, he was a phenomenal individual.  He went after what he wanted.  He held onto it tightly.  He learned from his mistakes.  He always strived to be better.  He always loved Aimee with a true heart.  He shared his world with Aimee, she held onto it with all of her being.

Aimee was incredible.  She recognized what truly made Kes tick.  She embraced his world and stood by his side at all times.  She took the good with the bad.  She made the bad good.  She fought for their love.  She nurtured it and made it unbreakable.

Together Aimee and Kes will take a journey that isn’t always easy.  They will pave their path the best way they know how.  They will always hold onto each other while venturing forward.  At the end of the road they will realize they have always made the magic by loving one another.

Jane Harvey-Berrick has given readers an unforgettable love story.  She gave us magic!  She gave us Kes and Aimee.  She gave us the Traveling Duet.

Excerpt

He’d grown taller. Not as tall as his grandfather yet, but nearly as tall as my father. His shoulders were wider and I could see his biceps pushing through his ragged t-shirt, but he was still on the thin side, wiry, I guess. He looked stunning, like he should be in a boy band—you know, the bad one that makes all the parents fear for their daughters’ virginity.

I watched him out of the corner of my eye as I turned to study the competition. I had to admit it wasn’t looking good. The girl was taller than me and wore a low cut tank top that showcased a lot of cleavage. Her boobs were no better than mine, I decided—there was just more of them on show. So whereas I looked safe, nice you might say, she looked dangerous. Her arms were covered in colorful tattoos, her ears pierced five or six times each, and she had silver rings through her lip and eyebrow. Her face was hard, but beautiful, even caked in makeup.

I guessed she was maybe two or three years older than me, it was hard to tell.

As if she felt my gaze on her, she swung toward me, her eyes blazing.

“No rubes back here!” she yelled. “Get the fuck out!”

I was shocked that a complete stranger would speak to me like that. I froze, my eyes darting to Kes. He turned to look at me, his frown of annoyance changing to a warm smile.

“Chill, Sorcha,” he muttered. “The shrimp’s a friend.”

I wanted to laugh. I wanted to cry. He was pleased to see me, but so dismissive. I stood there with my mouth hanging open. And then I was in Kes’s arms, breathing in the scent of sweat and soap and something like fresh hay that was so familiar.

“Hey, kid! How you doing?” he said, as he led me away.

His voice had deepened. No longer childlike, it was a light, pleasant tenor.

“Don’t call me kid!” I snapped, punching his shoulder.

He laughed and rubbed the spot where I’d hit him. His dimple popped out and I wished I’d hit him harder—then kissed him better.

“Okay, not a kid,” he smiled, but then I watched his eyes darken as they drifted down my body, pausing at my chest, then doing a slow sweep along my legs and hips. “No, not a kid,” he said again, and this time his voice was gruffer.

6 Star Read

2015 Favorite Michel’s Review

This book was brought to my attention while I was signing up for another blog tour.  The cover caught my attention.  When I read the synopsis for the book I knew I wanted to read this book.  When the ARC was delivered to my kindle I had to start the book immediately.  From the very first page I was hooked.  I could not put the book down.  I was mesmerized by the characters and their story.  After I finished the book the I could not stop thinking about it.  It was such a special, magical kind of story that captured my heart and imagination.  Traveling Man was a 6 star book and made the 2015 Favorite List.

Imagine living in rural America, in a very small town where nothing ever happens.  A town that is full of simple minded people and ordinary life.  A town where excitement is non existent.  Then one day a caravan of huge trucks rolls through town stirring up the dust.  These trucks are not just passing through, they are stopping at an old abandoned farm.  They are bringing a magical world to this small town.  The carnival has arrived.  Magic is in the air.  The excitement level has escalated from zero to ten.  For two weeks this sensation is going to breath life into this small world.

Aimee Anderson is celebrating her tenth birthday.  She has been granted a special wish.  She can celebrate her birthday anywhere she wants.  She has watched the trucks roll through town.  She knows the only thing she wants is to feel the magic the trucks have brought to her small world.  She wants to go to the carnival.

Her birthday wish is granted and she is going to the carnival.  She could of never imagined that the one wish would give her the most precious gift of a lifetime.  She has been given the gift of a life long friendship and ever lasting love from a boy that ispart of that magical world.  She has been given Kes Donohue, the boy extraordinaire.  For two weeks every year, she will get to leave her ordinary world in the background and become a part of the world that Kes belongs to.  For two weeks every year she will experience friendship, magic, excitement, and love.

Kes and Aimee come from two completely different worlds.  Her world is structured.  Aimee is smart and lives in a world of books.  She has a stable home, a predictable family, and a predictable life.  Kes lives in an RV.  He travels the country throughout the year.  He doesn’t attend school.  His family consists of his grandfather, his older brother, their pet monkey, and fellow carnie friends. At a young age he became a showman and dare devil. There are not many children in his world and he has no friends.  When he sees Aimee at the carnival absorbing all the wonders that most people don’t see, he knows he wants to share his world with her.  He wants Aimee to share her world with him.

These two ten year old children form a deep friendship in less than two weeks.  Their families are reluctant to allow the friendship because of how different their worlds are. Both families will see that this friendship is special and is beneficial for both the children. With reluctance they will allow this friendship to flourish.

Kes and Aimee will spend two weeks every summer together for six years.  They will grow from children to young adults.  They will change throughout the years.  They will discover new feelings that are much deeper than their friendship.  They will discover love.

Their sixteenth summer will bring their friendship to a halt.  Their hearts will be broken and their lives torn apart.  It will be the end of their magic.

For eight years Aimee and Kes will be traveling on new paths in their lives.  They will become adults and begin new careers.  They will be in control of their own destinies.  They have both changed drastically.  They are no longer the children with wonder in their eyes.  That is until the magic hits them once again… their paths will cross once more. Can they bring their two separate worlds together and create the magic once again?

Traveling Man was mesmerizing.  I love books where the readers get to experience the characters coming of age. Experiencing the characters go from childhood innocence to the angsty teenager and finally the full grown adult is like watching yourself grow through the pages.  Being able to experience that first kiss and first love is magical.

Jane Harvey- Berrick captured the world of the carnival.  Throughout the book I felt like I was right there with the characters. I could feel the smallness of Aimee’s world.  I could feel the electricity in the air. I could smell the hotdogs in the air, I could taste the funnel cakes, and I could feel the  excitement like it was electricity in my bones.  I became a part of the book.  She also brought her characters to life and the reader felt every emotional moment.

I absolutely loved Traveling Man!  I cannot wait for the next book.
