Thorn

From the first time I played army as a kid, the military has been my life. As an Airborne Major, I’d led my men through two tours in Afghanistan. But when my father was elected president, I became an even greater target for the enemy—a prize for someone to take out. To ensure not only the safety of myself, but of my men, I got stripped of my cammies, shoved into an Armani suit, and placed into a management position at my father’s company. After years of trekking through the desert with an assault rifle, I was way out of my area of expertise, which my transition coordinator was more than happy to let me know on a daily, if not hourly basis. The brunette bombshell would be the death of me in more ways than one, especially since I hadn’t been with a woman since my last deployment. She’s turning out to be one of the greatest foes I’ve ever done battle with.

Isabel

In the backwoods Georgia town I was born in, you either married right out of high school or got the hell out of town. I chose the second and never looked back. After graduating top in my class, I started working for The Callahan Corporation. Fast forward five years and I was about to become the youngest female manager in the history of my department. And then all the blood, sweat, and tears I’d put into my career were for nothing when the boss’s billionaire son was handed my position on a silver platter. Not only that, I was expected to help transition him into the job that was supposed to be mine. Sure, he’s easy on the eyes with his chiseled good-looks and impossibly built physique, but I’m not going to let that distract me. I hope soldier boy is good at military strategy because sabotage is the name of the game I’ll be playing.

EXCERPT:

Today found us doing some last-minute tweaking in preparation for our dinner meeting with George Halliwell. Although it was just a typical business dinner, Thorn appeared exceptionally tense. He kept popping his neck and jerking his hand through his hair. I hated when he did the hair jerk because it made his sandy blond hair look all tousled and sexy like he’d been rolling around in the sheets during a sexathon.

Yes, I utterly despised myself for thinking that.

We’d just hit a tedious part of reviewing the files on the computer when Thorn leaned his head back and pinched the bridge of his nose. “If I’m going to get through the rest of this, I’m going to need some strong coffee.” He stared pointedly at me.

Oh. Hell. No. He was not suggesting I get his coffee.

In a sugary-sweet tone, I replied, “I believe I showed you where the break room is last week, but if you’ve forgotten, it’s down the hall and then take two lefts.”

“I want an espresso from Starbucks.”

“Then you’re going to need to take the elevator and go down the block.”

“How much plainer do I need to make this, Ms. Flannery? I want a Venti espresso from Starbucks, and you’re going to get it for me.”

“Well, Mr. Callahan, there are a lot of things I want that I don’t get. That’s just life. Furthermore, I know you’re still new to the workforce, but being a coffee runner is not part of my job description. You have an assistant, AKA a secretary for that, not to mention a Secret Service agent who is outside thumbing through Cosmo.”

His blue eyes narrowed at me. “I never said it was part of your job. However, I do believe it is part of your job description not to be insubordinate to your superior.”

If I had been a cartoon character, this was the moment imaginary steam would have billowed from my ears at Thorn’s audacity. At that moment, I had two choices—my own version of Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken. Fearing for my job, I could bow to Thorn’s will and get his damn coffee, or I could throw caution to the wind and put Mr. Trust Fund Baby in his place. By now, you should know me well enough to know which one I chose. It also didn’t help that I’d caught the end of Nine to Five, one of my all-time favorites, on HBO when I got in from work the night before. Facing down my own version of Franklin Hart, I was going to make Violet, Doralee, and Judy proud.

I jabbed his chest with my index finger. “Look, soldier boy, I know you’re used to barking orders and having your men and women scramble to obey them, but we’re not in Afghanistan anymore, Toto. Now I’m going to walk out of here and tell your secretary you’re about to piss yourself for an espresso.”

While I fully expected Thorn to be enraged by my declaration, I didn’t expect the amused smirk that twisted on his face. “Alice isn’t here.”

“Excuse me?”

“She took a half day to go to the dentist.”

Damn Alice and her teeth. Now my ass really was on the line. “Fine. I will go get your precious espresso, but don’t doubt for one minute that I’ll be filing a grievance via the proper channels,” I hissed.

Thorn had the audacity to grin. “You make sure you do that.”

MOTHERFUCKER. After I whirled around, I started stalking out of his office.

“Oh, Ms. Flannery?” he called.

I fought the urge to reply, Yes, Satan? Instead, I slowly pivoted around. “Yes, Mr. Callahan?”

“I would offer you some cash, but I’m sure you’ll want a receipt to corroborate your story.”

Smug bastard. Of course I wanted a receipt, and of course I planned to put it with my grievance. I hated that he had the ability to read my mind; it made it hard to maintain any ground with him. Well, sometimes he could read my mind—obviously, if he were fully psychic, he would have busted me for the underhanded shit I’d been doing to him.

I gave a nod of my head before turning back around and sprinting out the door. After I stopped by my office for my purse, I hopped on the elevator. When I jabbed the button for the lobby, the woman behind me snickered.

“Tough day, huh?”

“You could say that.”

“Trust me, I’ve been there.”

The commiseration was nice, but at the same time, I inwardly groaned at my behavior. I mean, when had I sunk so low as to act like a petulant toddler by taking my frustrations out on an elevator button? That was somewhat of a rhetorical question since I knew exactly why I was acting the way I was. It was all because the devil incarnate had usurped me at my job and was hell-bent on driving me batshit crazy.

While it pained me to admit it, I really, really wanted to hurt Thorn Callahan, and that in itself was unnerving because I normally wasn’t a violent person. Back home in Georgia, I was constantly stopping my car to help wayward turtles in the middle of the road. I’d even been known to put spiders outside rather than squishing them.

Ugh, the man was driving me absolutely insane, and it had only been three weeks. How was I possibly going to make it a year to eighteen months with him? As I pushed through the doors of the Starbucks, I found myself actually contemplating the thought of changing companies, but I really didn’t want to go that route. It wasn’t that I couldn’t have found another job, but more about the fact that I loved the Callahan Corporation, which had been home to me for so many years.

After I placed my order for Satan’s precious espresso, I started shuffling around in the bottom of my purse for my debit card, and I finally found it hiding under a bottle of dog laxatives. After I handed the card to the barista, my gaze once again fell inside my purse, more specifically on the bottle.

You see, it wasn’t normal for me to have dog laxatives rolling around in the bottom of my purse. Dani was known to suffer from constipation from time to time, which the vet assured me was part of living the city dog life. I hadn’t meant to bring them with me that day. When I was raking stuff off the kitchen counter and into my purse, I thought I’d swept up a bottle of Midol.

At that moment, a truly devious idea entered my mind. It was so heinous that I actually sucked in an agonized breath upon realizing I’d actually thought it. I even went so far as to glance left and right to make sure no one was staring at me in fear. I don’t know why I thought someone could suddenly have the ability to read my mind, but if they did, I would be in big trouble.

I could almost imagine the expressions of horror on their faces, as well as the dialogue that might take place.

That seemingly normal-looking chick right there? Shes debating putting dog laxatives in her bosss coffee.

Damn, thats cold.

Forget cold—its downright psychotic. If she keeps gobbling up the cuckoo puffs, shell be rocking a straight-jacket down in Bellevue.

I dunno, bosses can be epic pricks. He probably deserves a lengthy ride on the porcelain chariot.

“Espresso for Isabel.” I jumped out of my thoughts at the sound of my name being called.

EXCERPT:

As she was cleaning up in the wake of a rowdy group of frat boys from Georgia Tech, Jenny caught sight of a cowboy hat out of the corner of her eye. Immediately, she drew in a sharp breath and swept a hand to her chest to try to still the erratic beating of her heart. Turning around, she peered in the direction of the white Stetson.

Sweet Jesus, he was backthe hot-as-hell cowboy from out of town. It had been two or three weeks since hed first strutted into the bar an hour before closing time. In his tight jeans, hed left little to the imagination about what kind of weaponry he was packing.

At first, shed thought he was lost. After all, he had looked so completely out of placea ride em cowboy right out of the Wild West, smack in the urban jungle of Atlanta. Ignoring the stares from some of the other patronsand from Jennyhe had slid across one of the bar stools. Sweeping his hat from his head, hed then held up his hand, signaling her to come over.

A shot of Jack, hed requested. Holy hell, his voice. It had sent a shot of white-hot lust straight to her core. There was something particular about a mans voice that got her libido up and running, and the deeper the better. It was why she had a hard time watching Harry Potter without having impure thoughts about Alan Rickman, AKA Snape.

While she fixed the drink, Jenny could feel the cowboys eyes on her. The heat of his gaze bore through her white blouse and warmed the skin above her breasts. It wasnt like she wasnt used to male customers staring at her boobs. She had learned from her older sister, Laura, to use her C cups to her advantage with tight shirts and low-buttoned blouses. Most of the time, the leers of horny men grated on her nerves, but not that night. Shed wanted the cowboys eyes on her. If shed been honest, she wanted his hands and his tongue on her too.

When shed placed the drink in front of him, she smiled. There you go. My name is Jenny if you need anything else.

Can I ask you a question?

I guess,Jenny had replied hesitantly.

How in the hell do you live down here with all the crazy drivers?

She hadnt been able to help laughing because the question wasnt what shed been expecting. I guess since Ive lived here all my life, Im used to it.

The cowboy had grimaced. You have my sympathies.

Hey now, I happen to like this city, shed protested.

You can have it.

And just like that, theyd struck up a conversation. Since it had been almost closing, theyd had time to get to know each other. His name was Brett, and he was a professional roper passing through Atlanta on his way back home from a roping championship in South Georgia. Jenny really had no idea what professional roping entailed, but her dirty mind had decided to draw the obscene conclusion that he was really good with his hands. He could tie her upyou know, if she ever decided to swing that way.

When hed found out she loved horses but rarely got to see any in the city, hed taken her by the hand and led her outside. Although a voice inside her head screamed that he could be about to abduct her, shed kept letting him lead her across the parking lot. Shed liked the way his calloused hands felt against her skin, and a relieved sigh had escaped her lips when they stopped in front of a horse trailer. Opening the back, he had introduced her to his two horses, Waylon and Willie. She had tried not to swoon at the gesture.

After theyd gotten back inside, Brett had insisted on buying her a drink, even when she told him she could have one on the house. One drink had turned into two, and when shed gotten a little tipsy, shed been really thankful her dad was in the back to run the evenings receipts. Even after shed turned off the open sign and locked the front door, Bretts perfectly sculpted ass had remained on the bar stool. She hadnt felt a connection with anyone in such a long time, and it wasnt just about the physical.

Damn, she had wanted him to kiss her that night, and for a moment, shed thought he would. Instead, hed slipped his cowboy hat back on. You take care,he had said.

You too,she had replied as she watched him walk out of the bar and out of her life. She had experienced a sinking feeling that something potentially amazing had just slipped through her fingers. Shed never in a million years dreamed hed walk back through the doors, but there he was in all his beautiful flesh.

JACOB’S LADDER: ELI by Katie Ashley

Blurb:

One wouldn’t expect a sexy-as-sin rocker like Eli Renard to spend time with a woman just as a friend, but that’s exactly what Emersyn Wallace is to him. Just a friend. When tragedy brings her back into his world, Eli moves mountains to help Emersyn get back onto her feet by finding her a job as a backup singer for Jacob’s Ladder. At first, Eli is thrilled that Emerysn is along on tour, and he sets out to do his best to help her forget her sorrow through a range of crazy friend dates. But after spending so much time with her in such close quarters, Eli finds his feelings beginning to shift. He no longer sees Emersyn as the once awkward young girl he played some of his first songs with. Soon it’s not only his body that reacts to her, but it’s also his heart. He’s about to learn what a dangerous game it is to dry a widow’s tears.

EXCERPT:

Tonight, as I trudged back to the bus after our show, I wanted nothing more than a scalding hot shower and to fall into bed. After our Meet and Greet, Id stayed back to have a beer with some of the roadies while Gabe and Emersyn headed for the bus. After Harry unlocked the door, I pounded up the stairs. I swept my shirt over my head as I started down the hallway. The curtain to Emersyns roost was closed, so I figured she had gone on to sleep.

All right, bro, youve been in there long enough. Give someone else a shot at the shower.I grabbed the handle and jerked open the bathroom door. A high-pitched feminine squeal pierced my eardrums, and my hands flew up to cover them. As a whole lot of naked female flesh entered my vision, I should have covered my eyes instead.

Oh fuuuuuck. It hadnt been Gabe in the shower. Instead of seeing my brothers junk, I had just managed to see more than I ever should have of my best friend. Like tits and ass kind of more. While most women didnt care if their girlfriends saw them naked, it was a completely different ball game when it came to male and female friends. Yes, I mightve accidentally grabbed Emersyns boob once, but that was nothing like seeing her practically naked.

Eli!Emersyn shrieked as she fumbled to cover herself with a towel.

Averting my eyes, I ducked my head, but then on second thought, I spun around so she could get decent. Im so, so sorry. I thought you were Gabe.As I got a delicious flashback of perky tits in my mind, I mumbled, So not Gabe.Oh Jesus, had I actually just thought of Emersyns tits as perky and the flashback as delicious? What kind of pervert was I? There was no way I shouldve been having those thoughts about my best friend. When I grabbed her boob in my sleep, I had felt so disgusting I wanted to cut my hand off. Well, you know, except for the fact I kind of needed it to play guitar. Next thing I would be doing is filing the images of Emersyn away in my spank bank to relive at a later time. Oh, fuck no!

Did you ever hear of knocking?she squeaked. I wasnt sure I had ever heard her voice so shrill. Who knew the way to get her to reach a new vocal range was to scare the shit out of her by seeing her naked?  Although I was pretty sure she would object to going on stage in the buff

I threw a tentative glance over my shoulder, and relief filled me when I saw Sonny was now sufficiently wrapped in a towel. Turning around to face her, I asked, Yeah, okay, so I didnt knock, but didnt you hear me when I said I was coming in?

Emersyn wildly shook her head. It was all muffled because I had the towel over my ears to dry my hair.

Im really sorry, Sonny, but ever since Abby got with Jake, its been just us guys on the bus. When youve seen one dick, youve seen them all.

Tell that to all the men enamored with sending dick pics.

After throwing my head back with a laugh, my eyes met hers. Good point.

Nibbling on her lip, Emersyn said, I guess this was bound to happen with us being in such close quarters.

True. But from now on, Ill make sure to knock. Ill make sure Gabe gets the memo as well. In fact, we might even instate a shower schedule where youre ensured to have the whole bus to yourself.

Emersyn rolled her eyes. Im not that much of a special snowflake that I cant take showering on a bus with you two.

Yeah, well, I would argue your horrified scream at the sight of me could have broken glass.

She laughed. It wasnt that bad.

Im seriously surprised the mirror didnt shatter.

Whatever,she replied.

When my gaze zeroed in on the area directly above her cleavage, Emersyn shoved me. Jeez, didnt you get a good enough look a few minutes ago?

What are you talking about?

Youre staring at my boobs.

I laughed. Trust me, Im not staring at your tits.

You could have fooled me,she huffed, pulling the towel tighter against her.

You still have the scar.

Excuse me?

With my index finger, I motioned to the slightly discolored area below her collarbone. The scar you got that time we were climbing trees.

Emersyns eyes widened. You remember that?

You scared the hell out of me. No lie. I can still hear the thump sound when you fell to the ground.

Pinching her eyes shut, Emersyn began reliving the memory. You were reaching your hand out to me when my foot slipped on the limb. A branch jabbed me in the chest as I fell. When I landed, it knocked the breath out of me.Her eyes popped open as a small smile curved on her lips. Ill never forget the look on your faceyou were pale as a sheet. The worst part was I couldnt tell you I was all right.

I grinned. Im not going to lie I probably pissed my pants a little that day.

Because you were worried our parents would kill you if youd maimed me?she teasingly asked.

That was part of it.I shook my head. More than anything, I was worried Id killed my best friend. I couldnt imagine my life without you in it.

You really thought that?

I sure did.

I froze when fresh tears pooled in her eyes. I couldnt believe as hard as I was trying not to upset her, I had somehow managed to set her off. The next thing I knew she was throwing her arms around my neck and pressing herself against me. Oh Eli, everyone should have a best friend as wonderful as you,she murmured, her breath fanning against my ear.

After I brought my arms up to embrace her, something from the darkest recesses of my brain switched on. For the first time in my life, I noticed the soft curves of Emersyns body. The perfect way she fit against me. The way her breasts pillowed against my chest. The flow of her hair down her back. The sweet smell of her perfume. The silkiness of her skin.

It was everything a man would notice about a prospective lover.

It was everything I shouldnt have noticed about Emersyn.

Clearing my throat, I quickly pulled away. Anyway, Im sorry about that day, and Im sorry about bursting in on you.

Emersyn gave me sweet smile. A chaste one she would give to her older brother or friend. Youre forgiven.

I jerked my thumb at my roost. Ill give you some privacy and let you finish getting ready.

You dont have to do that.

No, no. I dont mind.

Before she could protest anymore, I turned on my heels and hurried down the hallway. After jerking aside the cover on my roost, I dove onto the mattress. As I lay back, I pinched my eyes shut. While it was probably crazy as hell, I began repeating in my mind, there is no way in hell Im hot for Emersyn, there is no way in hell Im hot for Emersyn, there is no way in hell Im hot for Emersyn.

Nope. Nada. Not happening.

JACOB’S LADDER: ELI by Katie Ashley

Blurb:

One wouldn’t expect a sexy-as-sin rocker like Eli Renard to spend time with a woman just as a friend, but that’s exactly what Emersyn Wallace is to him. Just a friend. Even though she’s matured into a beauty, Eli still doesn’t remotely see his childhood pal as a sex-object.

After losing her husband and singing partner in a tragic accident, Emersyn Wallace spent the last eight months drowning in a sea of grief. With the bills piling up and her family and friends concerned about her emotional welfare, she reluctantly agrees to join the Jacob’s Ladder’s tour. While recapturing her lost love of singing and performing, she finds both comfort and healing in Eli’s gregarious personality and outrageous sense of humor. But as the anniversary of her husband’s death approaches, she finds herself in turmoil over her new amorous feelings for Eli.

Can Eli and Emersyn find the perfect melody to transition from friends to lovers, or will their relationship end out of tune?

Cover Reveal: Jacob’s Ladder: Gabe by Katie Ashley

Meet Gabe in Jacob’s Ladder – A new rock star romance

from Katie Ashley releasing this fall!

 *****

Jacob’s Ladder: Gabe

By Katie Ashley

Synopsis:

As the lead songwriter for Jacob’s Ladder, the last thing Gabe Renard needs is a debilitating case of writer’s block. After years of meaningless one night stands, he’s finding it hard to pen the love-filled ballads the label is requesting. In an effort to clear his mind, Gabe takes his jeep off-roading in the North Georgia Mountains. When a wrong-turn leads to him getting stuck more than just creatively, he’s forced to call for help. To his surprise, the “Ray” who has been sent by Hart Wreckers to his aid is actually “Rae”—a sexy-as-hell spitfire in a pair of tight-as-hell jeans. The combination of Rae’s sassy mouth and rocking body might be the inspiration Gabe needs. But for the first time since becoming a rock star, his advances have been shot down.

Reagan Hart has never been a fan of musicians. In fact, just the mention of one might cause her to throw a tire tool. Her disgust for them started when she was just eight and her mother ran off with a traveling country singer, and it only worsened when at seventeen, her rocker boyfriend knocked her up before blowing out of town. As a single mother taking care of her family’s collision business, Rae doesn’t have time for hook ups, much less a relationship. And if she did make time, a musician would be last on her list, even one as good-looking as Gabe Renard.

Can Gabe find the words to prove not only to Rae, but himself, that she’s the only one for him?

The race will be a fight to the death finish, and that’s not even the actual campaign.

Barrett

The name’s Barrett Callahan. Yeah, that Barrett Callahan—the one the press dubbed “Bare” after those naked sexting pictures surfaced. At twenty-five, I was armed with an MBA from Harvard, an executive position at my father’s Fortune 500 company, a penthouse, and a different piece of delectable eye candy in my bed every weekend. I had a life most men dreamed of. But then my father decided to run for president, and my playboy lifestyle became a liability to his campaign that was built on family values. My “makeover” comes in the form of a fake fiancée who I don’t even get to choose–one who is an uptight, choirgirl acting priss but also sexy-as-hell.

Addison

My latest relationship had gone down in flames, and I was drowning in a sea of student loans when in true Godfather status, James Callahan made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Seven figures for seven months on the campaign trail pretending to be the adoring fiancée of his son, Barrett. As soon as he won the election, our engagement would be dissolved amicably for the press, I was free to ride off into the sunset a million dollars richer, and because of the NDA, no one would be the wiser. Sure, I’d never met the guy, but I’d been a theater nerd in high school. I could pull off any role from Lady Macbeth to Maria Von Trapp. But that was before I met my fake fiancé—the infuriating, self-absorbed, egotistical, drop-dead-sexy King of the Manwhores.

Synopsis

Cade Hall has always been the golden boy of the gridiron. Because of his talent at football, coupled with his father’s wealth, he’s always gotten his way. But when a night of drunken debauchery lands him in hot water with the college athletic board, neither his influential father nor his charming grin can save him. Cade finds it a total buzz kill when he is sentenced to community service with troubled youth at an inner-city shelter. But his nightmare is only beginning when his greatest high school regret is the very one in charge of the program, and she has him by the balls in more ways than one.

For Avery Prescott, senior year was a nightmare of epic proportions, and Cade Hall played the lead villain. After she fled her small town for college in the bright lights of Atlanta, she thought she had escaped the painful memories of her past. She never could have imagined Cade would waltz through the door of the outreach program she presided over. But Avery has news for Cade—she isn’t the same shy, doormat of a girl she was in high school. Since she holds Cade’s football future in her hands, she’s more than ready to make payback a real bitch.

Will they stay in the defensive zone or discover that sometimes life’s greatest lessons are learned the hard way?

Excerpt

“Is this one of those old-timey record players?”

“A Victrola,” I answered as I joined him.

Cade snapped his fingers. “That’s right. There was one of these at my grandparents’ house.” He eyed the contraption curiously. “Does it work?”

“Sure.” I set my cup down before winding up the crank. Then I placed the needle on the record, and a slow instrumental tune came out of the Victrola’s horn. At Cade’s groan, I grinned. “Not a fan of classical music?”

“No. It’s more about the fact that it’s one of Strauss’s waltzes.”

Cocking my brows at him, I asked, “You know Strauss?”

With a snort, Cade said, “Don’t look so surprised, and no, I didn’t learn about him in Harlington’s music appreciation class either.”

I held up my hands. “I wasn’t alluding to anything.”

“Yes, you were alluding, as you say, to the stereotype of me being an uncivilized jock,” Cade teased in a snooty-sounding voice.

“I’m sorry. I’ve got to stop doing that. You really are so much more than a jock.”

He swept his hand to his heart. “Why, thank you.”

“So tell me how you know Strauss.”

“I have waltzed at ten cotillions and three debutante balls.”

“Wow. That’s quite impressive.”

“What about you?”

“I’ve never been to a cotillion or deb ball.”

“No, I mean, haven’t you ever waltzed before?”

I laughed. “Oh yeah, I often practice my dance skills out in the corn.”

“Every lady should know how to dance.”

“But I’m not a lady.”

Cade smiled. “Yeah. You are.” When I started to protest, he said, “Money and position aren’t what make a lady. It’s what’s inside you that counts.”

His words and his tone caused the breath to wheeze out of my lungs. Just when I thought he couldn’t surprise me any more with the things he said, he went and said something like that. “Thank you,” I finally mumbled.

“You’re welcome.” The world seemed to slow to a crawl around us as we stood there staring at each other. The sound of Cade clapping his hands together caused me to jump. “Okay. One waltz lesson coming up.”

“I’m going to warn you that you’re probably going to regret this. I’m the worst dancer ever.”

“How can anyone who plays the piano suck at dancing?”

“I’m not sure how it’s possible, but trust me, it is.”

Cade laughed. “We’ll see.”

A tingling jolt of electricity shot through me when Cade took one of my hands in his. After he put his other hand on the small of my back, he drew me closer to him. Even with all the times I had sat next to him while we worked on our project, I hadn’t been this close.

“Now you put your other hand on my shoulder.”

“Okay.”

“Step back with your left foot and then bring your right to the side.” After I followed Cade’s lead, he said, “Now bring your left foot to your right, and then step forward with your right.”

My mind spun as I frantically tried processing Cade’s instructions. Somehow it managed to click together, and I followed his lead. “Hey, you’ve got it,” he remarked with a smile.

“It’s not because of me—it must be the teacher.” I glanced up at him and smiled. “Sports, brains, and dancing; you’re really a true triple threat.”

“You forgot devastating good looks and charm.”

I grinned. “Does that make you a quintuple threat?”

“Make it a sextuple threat if you throw in the money.”

“I should have known you’d find a way to have ‘sex’ in your title.”

Cade threw his head back and laughed. “Always busting my balls, Prescott.”

“Yep. Just consider me your Little Ball Buster like Judith in Walking Dead was called Little Ass Kicker.”

Cade’s brows rose in surprise. “You watch Walking Dead?”

“Sure I do.”

“That surprises me.”

“Why?”

“I guess I just figured you only watched pretentious stuff like Downton Abbey.”

Downton Abbey is not pretentious.”

Cade grinned. “I’ll take that as a yes that you watch it.”

“I certainly do.”

“At least I’m 1 and 1 on picking the TV shows you like.”

“While you know me pretty well, you have a lot more to learn, Mr. Hall,” I teased.

“I look forward to you educating me.”

As I stared into his face, Cade’s expression grew serious. The idea of educating him suddenly seemed to take on a deeper meaning—one of both mental and physical knowledge.

Cade dipped his head to where our mouths were just inches apart. His breath fanned across my cheek, causing me to shiver. I stared into his eyes, silently pleading with him to go ahead and kiss me. We’d already been down this road before. Since Thanksgiving night, I’d wanted nothing more than to feel his lips on mine again.

When he finally kissed me, it sent energy humming all over my body. I’d kissed other boys, but it had never felt the way it did with Cade. It was all-consuming of my mind, body, and spirit.

Considering his experience, it shouldn’t have been too surprising that Cade was a good kisser. What surprised me the most was the emotion behind his kiss. It ran so much deeper than just a physical act, as if he was putting his heart and soul into kissing me.

Cade deepened the kiss by plunging his tongue into my mouth. It tangled along with mine in a waltz of its own composing. My hand snaked up his back to capture the hair at the base of his neck, and I ran my fingers through the silky strands, marveling at how much softer it was than I had imagined.

The Victrola ran out of steam, and the only sound filling the room was heavy breathing. At the loss of music, Cade stopped leading me around the floor, and his hands slid underneath my buttocks. He gripped the globes of my ass before hoisting me up to wrap my legs around his, and I molded myself tighter against him. I couldn’t seem to get enough of him—the way his strong arms felt around me, his thick waist against my legs, his broad, muscular back underneath my hands. Even though I knew I shouldn’t, I wanted all of him.

When we crashed into a chest of drawers, Cade momentarily released my lips to breathlessly ask, “Are you okay?”

“Mmhmm.” I gazed into his hooded eyes. “Don’t stop. Please don’t stop.”

I rubbed myself against the ridge in Cade’s pants, causing him to groan against my throat. “Jesus, Prescott, if you keep doing that, I won’t be able to stop.” When I did it again, my action was rewarded with a growl.

Cade’s wild eyes glanced around the room before leading us over to the wide red settee in the back corner. We collapsed onto the smooth velvet material. I widened my legs to allow Cade’s hips between them and his mouth sought out mine in a frantic kiss.

As our tongues battled against each other, Cade’s hand came to my breast. He kneaded and cupped it over the fabric of my uniform, my nipples hardening under his touch. When he began undoing the buttons of my dress, he broke the kiss to glance at me as if asking my permission. At my nod, he practically ripped the remaining buttons open.

He gave me a sheepish grin as he pulled me into a sitting position. “Sorry about that.”

“It’s okay,” I said as I slid my arms out of the sleeves.

My breath hitched when Cade’s arms snaked around my back to undo my bra. Once it was unhooked, I couldn’t help bringing my arms to cover my chest and keep the bra in place. I hated that in this moment I couldn’t seem to get past my modesty, or my fear that my average-sized chest would turn him off.

Cade tilted my chin with his fingers, forcing me to look him in the eye. “You sure you’re okay with this, Prescott?”

“I am, I promise.”

“Then what’s wrong?”

“I’m just a little scared,” I whispered.

“That I’ll hurt you?” Cade questioned with a wounded look.

I gave a quick jerk of my head. “That you won’t like what you see.”

“Huh?”

“You’ve been with so many other girls. I’m afraid I won’t measure up.”

His expression darkened. “That’s the stupidest fucking thing I’ve ever heard.”

I ducked my head. “I’m sorry, but I can’t help the way I feel.”

Cade cupped my face in his hands. “There’s only right here and right now, and there’s no one else but you and me. None of the past, just us and this moment.”

My heartbeat thrummed wildly at his sentiment. “Okay,” I murmured as I stared deeply into his eyes.

“And you could never not be beautiful to me. I like everything about you, both inside and out.” At what must’ve been my incredulous look, Cade grinned. “And I’m not just saying that so you’ll let me in your pants.”

“I know you wouldn’t.” Deep down, I knew it to be the truth. If Cade had really wanted to just screw me, he would have attempted it over the past two months.

“I wouldn’t be here tonight if I didn’t want to be with you for the long haul.”

Once again, my heart began to beat so erratically that I felt a little dizzy. “Really?”

He nodded. “You’re all I need, Avery.”

Michel’s Review

Some people learn through the school of hard knocks while others learn by examples.  For some people life is a breeze, everything comes easily without much thought.

Everything came easy for Cade Hall. He’s a star football player at Georgia Tech.  He isn’t the typical jock, he’s special because he is a triple threat.  He has looks, personality, and brains.  He’s also a filthy rich, spoiled brat.  He has a knack for getting in trouble and a dependency on daddy bailing him out when push came to shove.  He has no qualms using his athletic status or flashing his social status to get what he wants. He utilizes every asset and gift he has been blessed with to skate through life.  He has never considered how his actions affected other people.  He has never had to own up to his digressions.  It’s not that he was a bad person, he just isn’t a really good person.

When a college prank lands him in the hot seat, he thinks daddy can bail him out with false threats or a hefty donation.  The Dean of Athletics has a different opinion.  He has given Cade an ultimatum , he has to do community service, or lose his position in football program for the remainder of his college career.  He has to serve forty hours a week throughout the entire summer.  He has to work the service around his football schedule.  If he screws up, he’s out of the football program.  Cade loves football as much as he loves himself.

His sentence is to work at an inner city center for at risk teenagers.  It should be an easy gig.  What he didn’t count on was Avery Prescott being in charge of his duties at the center.  Cade and Avery have a history that didn’t end well.  She was one of Cade’s victims in high school.  She is the one regret Cade has carried in his soul.  Now he has to face the consequences of his actions.

Cade is not only going to learn humility, he is also going to learn humanity.  His time with Avery and the teenagers is going to change how he looks at himself in the mirror.  He’s going to become a better man.  A man that can be respected and admired.  A man that learns by examples and takes it to heart.

Avery Prescott finally has the opportunity to make Cade Hall pay for what he did to her in high school.  She has moved on from the humiliation and devastation, but she never forgot.  The one thing that she did forget is that Cade Hall also had real potential.  There was more than the egotistical rich boy that everyone sees.  There’s a man with a real beating heart.  Still a little revenge is good for the soul.  Seeing Cade Hall grovel will bring her great joy.  Seeing Cade Hall live up to his potential will make her heart soar.

Can Cade Hall be redeemed? Can Avery Prescott forgive him?  Can the two find the love they were meant to share?  Will Cade and Avery help change the lives of the teenagers who desperately need someone in their corner cheering them on?

I was drawn into this book with the very first paragraph.  I could not put it down.  There was an entertaining as well as emotional story that went beyond the typical new adult romance.  Katie Ashley has a gift of bringing her characters to life and making their story unforgettable.  I mean that in a true sense because some of secondary characters were from a previous book, Don’t Hate The Player, Hate The Game ( which I loved), that was released in May 2013.  Three years later these dynamic secondary characters are standing strong and screaming for their own book.

There is a special bonus book, that I mentioned above, at the end of The Hard Way.  Katie graciously has given her readers a sensational gift and another fantastic reading experience.

The Hard Way is my favorite Katie Ashley book to date.
