One becomes a predator

One becomes a protector

And one becomes prey.

Ginger McHuid has been in love with the “Dub Twins” – Cain Wolfram and Josiah Woodman – for as long as she can remember. And for as long as the cousins can remember, they’ve each loved Ginger in their own all-consuming ways.

An hour later they stopped by the Glenn River, eight miles downriver from Ginger’s house and two from the distillery where Cain had partied last night.

“We should water them,” he said, reining in Thunder and dismounting with the ease of a lifelong horseman.

She reined in Heath, who nickered in protest, and grinned down at Cain who reached up for her. His hands lingered for an extra moment on her hips as she slid down the front of his body. Leaning her head back, she stared up at him, daring him to pull her closer, to kiss her, to admit that this whole “friends” thing was bullshit on fire. But, he clenched his jaw, cleared his throat and dropped his hands.

“Thanks,” she murmured, her voice husky in her ears as he stared down at her, his eyes flinty and dark.

Taking Heath’s reins with a grunt, he turned away from her, leading the horses to the river’s edge and leaving her to follow behind. She leaned down to pick up a flat stone and skipped it across the slow moving water.

“Not bad,” said Cain.

You were always the best.”

“Nah,” he said. “Woodman was better.”

“Nope,” she countered, picking up another stone. “Woodman was good, but you were better. Remember that Fourth of July that you skipped eleven times? Eleven times. It was a record.”

Satisfied that the horses were calm and drinking their fill, Cain leaned down and grabbed a rock of his own, skipping it over the dark water.

One-two-three-four-five-six-seven…

“Wow!” she said, clapping lightly. “You’ve still got the touch!”

He turned to her, grinning. “You always get excited about the littlest things. What’s it like gettin’ a kick out of everythin’, Gin?”

“What’s it like gettin’ a kick out of nothin’, Cain?” she asked, her voice full of sass.

“I’m gettin’ a kick out of you right now, princess.”

A charge zapped between them as the words left his mouth, and her breath hitched and held for just a moment, but she looked down and picked up another rock. She was enjoying today too much to go back to Awkwardland.

She skipped her rock, which sunk after three measly hops.

“Remember when you saved my Cabbage Patch doll from certain doom in this river?” she asked him.

He screwed up his face as her. “Wasn’t me. Must have been Woodman.”

“It was you!” she insisted. “Not Woodman!”

“Savin’ a dolly? Please. That has Woodman written all over it. I couldn’t have cared less if it drowned.”

“But I cared,” she said softly. “Which is why you saved it.”

“Fine. Have it your way,” he said, sitting down on a large rock near the water’s edge.

She sighed, squatting down to wash her hands in the clear water before looking back at him. “Why do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Let Woodman take credit for all the good things?”

He shrugged, looking away from her, out at the water. “I don’t.”

“You just did. Twice.”

He sighed, giving her a long-suffering look. “If somethin’ good happened, chances were, it was Woodman’s doin’.”

“How do you figure?”

“He’s the better man, Gin,” said Cain, his eyes severe, his words deliberate.

She stood up slowly, turning her body completely to face him. “Do you really believe that?”
He looked away. “It’s the truth.”

“Cain. Cain, look at me.” Her words didn’t feel like enough so she beseeched him with her eyes too. “You’re just as good a man as he is.”
“Ha!” scoffed Cain, standing up and moving away from her. “Not in this life, princess.”

Just about everyone called Woodman “Woodman” except Gran and sometimes Cain. Gran insisted on calling him by his Christian name. Cain used “Josiah” and “Woodman” interchangeably with no real rhyme or reason that Ginger could follow.

“Rumor is you’re gonna marry Josiah someday,” said Gran, her sixty-something blue eyes merry. “But what do you say?”

Ginger giggled self-consciously, thinking about her grandmother’s question, something clenching in her twelve-year-old heart as she thought about marrying sensible Woodman and abandoning her wild feelings for his cousin, Cain.

“I don’t know,” she said, feeling her forehead crease in confusion.

“Or maybe you’re thinkin’ you want to marry…Cain,” said Gran softly.

Cain, with his jet black hair and ice blue eyes, appeared like a vision before her, and Ginger’s heart thumped faster. The way he’d run off to see Mary-Louise Walker this afternoon made her brown eyes spitting green with jealousy. The way he swaggered made her breath catch. Woodman was so predictable, so safe in comparison.

Then again, Woodman hadn’t exactly been predictable this afternoon, had he? He’d surprised her with the gift and even more with his words. His body had been hard and warm when he’d held her, the embrace awakening something new and foreign within her. Something she wasn’t sure she wanted. Something that didn’t feel safe and even scared her a little bit. She pulled her fingers away from the charm bracelet and faced her Gran.

“What do I do if I love them both?”

Her grandmother’s eyes, which had been mostly teasing, flinched, and her mouth tilted down in a sympathetic frown, which made her face seem so serious and sober.

“Choose, dollbaby,” said her Gran. “Someday you’ll have to choose.”

The same feeling that she’d had in the barn, when Cain had yelled, “Jump to the one you love the most, darlin’!” flared up within her—a fierce refusal to love one cousin more than the other, to give up one in lieu of the other.

Choose? Her memories skated back through a dozen years on McHuid’s Farm that had always included Cain and Woodman. When they were little children, they played together, swimming buck naked in the creek and racing over the green hills and pastures in impromptu games of tag. As the boys grew up, they started working with Cain’s daddy, Klaus, who was her father’s right-hand man, mucking out the stables and grooming the horses. She’d run down to the barn every day after her lessons to see them, working right along beside them until they were all covered in hay, dust and barn grime.

Though the Wolframs weren’t generally included in the McHuid’s active social life, the Woodmans were, which meant that in addition to seeing Cain and Woodman on the farm, she also saw Woodman at every holiday and birthday party…and they always managed to slip out unseen with some smuggled sweets for Cain.

They were the Three Musketeers of McHuid’s Farm and Ginger knew both boys as well as she knew herself—Cain’s smirking, hot-headed, impulsive ways, and Woodman’s level-headed patience, caution and kindness. Regardless of their differences, she also knew that as the only children of twin sisters, Cain and Woodman were much closer than most cousins. Genetically speaking, they were half-brothers, and while they surely liked to tease and torture each other, they wouldn’t hesitate to jump into front of a train to save the other’s skin either.

In Ginger’s mind, she envisioned them like two halves of the same coin that she held carefully in the palm of her hand.

She loved them both desperately.

Choose?

No, her heart protested. Impossible.

“What if I can’t?” she whispered, leaning back and resting her head on her grandmother’s comforting shoulder.

“Then you’ll lose them both,” said her grandmother softly.

Ginger’s shoulders fell, relaxing in surrender as she closed her eyes against the burn of tears.

“But don’t let’s think about that now, dollbaby,” said Gran, leaning her head upon her granddaughter’s, the constant tremble of her unpredictable body almost soothing to Ginger as they rocked side by side in the twilight. “You’re just twelve today. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you.”

Synopsis

Crazy about Cameron is the third of four books about the Philadelphia-based, wildly-handsome Winslow brothers who are all on the look-out for love.

(Say what? Not so much…Brooks and Pres are OFF. THE. MARKET, and Chris is so distracted with his campaign, he can’t see what – or who – is right under his nose.)

With her stiff posture, black-rimmed glasses and chestnut waves in a tight bun, Cameron Winslow’s downstairs neighbor, Margaret Story, has long been the unaware star of his filthiest dirty-librarian fantasies. But with a floundering business eating up all his time, Cam doesn’t have the open road he’d need to date a lady like Margaret.

Margaret, who grew up down the lane from Cameron, has always thought of him as a cross between a bully and a tease, as likely to pull her braids as pull her leg. But he’s grown up to be a smokin’ hot businessman, and Margaret can’t help daydreaming about what it would feel like to be under, um, with someone like him.

When hot-headed Cameron and buttoned-up Margaret start using the same shady contractor for apartment renovations, Margaret may find herself in some unexpected trouble, which forces long-concealed feelings to come out of hiding…and might just make way for two unlikely fantasies to finally come true.

Return to the world created in the English Brothers books with this fresh foursome of scorching hot Winslow Brothers!

Excerpt

Frankly, Cameron wasn’t sure if he was talking about the wine or about her.

She seemed so different tonight: less stiff, more soft. Less cautious, younger and, Christ, sexier, too. Was it just being in her own space that had wrought such a change in her? It made him wonder what space she inhabited on a daily basis that made her seem so tense and sharp all the time.

From the moment he walked through the door, he’d known that maintaining his thin veneer of disregard was going to be impossible. The way her huge brown eyes had widened, doelike and soft, as she gazed up at him? He was a goner. He’d gladly stand in her doorway forever if she’d look up at him like that for the rest of his life.

And of course he had to torture himself by wondering if those eyes went all wide and soft as she climaxed . . . or did she close them as her lips parted in ecstacy? Likely goddamned fucking Olson knew the answers to both questions, and it made Cameron’s blood boil.

He glanced over at her as she lifted the wineglass to her face, bending her head just a little, her eyes closing slowly as she inhaled the smell of the wine. She was a fucking work of art, this woman, and—Holy Christ!—the way she’d just purred “Ahhh, this one”? He was glad the denim of his jeans was still thick and new. Hopefully it would keep the fabric from tenting.

He watched, mesmerized, as she righted her head. Her eyes were still closed, but her voice was warm as honey, slow and smooth, as she murmured, “Candied black fruit. Spice.” She dipped her head again, and his mind went to filthy places watching it bob beside him. “Mmm. Fresh herbs. Kirsch. Oak. Mmm,” she sighed. “Heaven.”

And, oh fuck, even the hardest of hard denim wasn’t going to be able to combat the rush of blood that swelled his cock, pumping it longer and harder in his jeans with every word she whispered.

Cameron thought he was worldly. He thought he knew what sexy was. Five seconds ago, he would have answered it was a naked woman, spread eagled and willing on his bed, her skin flushed, her pupils dilated, her pussy hot and tight, ready to suck him forward and beg him to finish inside. But he’d known fuckall about sexy until Right. This. Minute.

Because Margaret Story—perched on the edge of her couch in a sweater dress that covered most of her body, her doe eyes closed, her pillowed lips making love to a glass of wine—had just officially blown Cameron’s mind.

Whoever he’d always thought she was? He was wrong. She wasn’t some sheltered librarian who needed him to come along and unleash her wild side. She wasn’t some helpless field mouse whom he’d swoop down on and catch in his teeth. Though she was self-contained, she was also passionate. She was sensuous and sexy as fuck without even trying, without even knowing, just because she was sitting there breathing, smelling like lilacs, and telling him what made a good wine great.

Michel’s Review

Crazy About Cameron by Katy Regnery is a delightful contemporary romance.  I enjoyed every word.  Although this story might be considered a fluff romance or  a “cookie cutter” romance, it was delivered well and the characters were dynamic.  With all of the dark romances and cutting edge subject matters, it is nice to come across a good classic romance that is easy to escape with.  Crazy For Cameron is one of those “feel good” romances.

Cameron Winslow and Margaret Story have known each other since childhood.  They both come from prestigious families in the Philadelphia area known as Blueberry Lane.  The Winslow family is known for being wild and daring.  The Story family, which is predominantly female, is known for their steady sedate presence. Each Story sister has their own distinct personality, as does the Winslow siblings.  Cameron Winslow has always tormented the quiet bookworm, Margaret Story.  He has teased her mercilessly.  As teens each family lost contact with one another while the children were pursuing their educations.  Now Margaret and Cameron are both adults, pursing their careers, and living in the same apartment building.

What starts out as a cordial relationship turns into a neighborly friendship between Margaret and Cameron.  When they decide to share a contractor for some remodels on their apartments it brings them closer together.

Margaret has been working for her father’s corporation but her real passion is her winery that she has been building.  When Cameron gets a glimpse of Margaret’s passion not only is he impressed but also intrigued.  He realizes that he needs to have something other than his father’s legacy as a career. The opportunity arises when Cameron’s sister’s wedding is cancelled due to the venue booking clause. This opens new doors for Cameron and Margaret.  They are going to venture together to build her winery into a thriving showplace and venue center.  Along the way they will fall in love, find their true passion, face some danger, and bring all the families of Blueberry Lane together once again.

Katy Regnery has a gift of bringing her stories to life.  The characters are as real as the people we meet on a daily basis.  Their passions and motivations are realistic which makes it easy for the reader to identify with.  Everything about this book and the overall Blueberry Lane series is romantic and charming.  Each book can be read as a stand alone romance.  Each story is wonderful.

I highly recommend Crazy For Cameron by Katy Regnery.

Synopsis

In this modern retelling of “Hansel and Gretel,” 13-year-old foster children, Holden and Griselda, escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety but the other is left behind.

Ten years later, Griselda’s boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match where her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring.

Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage and a cache of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the whitewater of the Shenandoah.

Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people – once profoundly broken – who discover that love is the only thing that can make them whole again.

Michel’s Review

I am always apprehensive of romances based off of fairy tales.  I hate cheesy erotic remakes that are borderline soft porn.  So many erotic romance authors have ruined a classic fairy tale and delivered a sub par romance.  When I read the synopsis for this book I was intrigued.  It sounded like a romantic suspense book.  At the same time I was very leery because it was based around the Hansel & Gretel fairytale. I was afraid that this new Hansel & Gretel would be too busy sampling each other than living the actual story. I have to admit that this particular fairytale always scared the crap out me as a child.  The idea of abandonment, getting lost, and being captured was frightening.

Wow ! Wow ! Wow!   Never Let You Go by Katy Regnery blew me away!  I absolutely loved this book.  I was stunned at the brilliance in the author’s retelling of the classic fairytale Hansel & Gretel.  The modern twist were very realistic.  The terror and suspense kept me on the edge of my seat.  The resilience and survival instinct of the characters was riveting. The pure love and trust between them was breathtaking.  I could not put this book down and read it in one sitting.

Imagine two ten year old children walking to the store.  Because of their upbringing in the foster care system their stranger danger sensors are diluted.  They have had to trust strangers all of their lives.  When a stranger approaches them on the side of the road acting like they are very familiar to them, they easily assume that he is related to their foster parents.  After all, the man has a puppy, how can he be a bad person.  Wrong..wrong…wrong.

Holden Croft was placed in a new foster home three days before his abduction.  Because of his small size and stammer, he was bullied and abused in his previous foster homes.  When the little girl about the same age as him, living in his new home, befriends him; he finally feels like he has a place where he might fit in.  Griselda was a beautiful golden child that had a smile that radiated like the sun.  She was smart and strong.  Holden desperately wanted this girl to be his friend.

When their foster parents take the family for camping trip in West Virginia the following weekend their lives will be forever changed.  They will become bonded to one another for life.  They will live through the worst terror and nightmares any person could experience.  The only thing that kept them surviving was their bond and love for each other.

For three years they were held captive by a madman.  They were beaten, tortured , and worked to the bone.  When the opportunity and the dire need to escape presents itself they run.  Their escape attempt is thwarted.  Holden is recaptured and Griselda manages to get away.  By the time she reaches the authorities, Holden and the bad man have disappeared.

For ten years Zelda (Griselda ) has lived with the guilt of leaving Holden behind.  She has punished herself and does not allow herself any happiness.  She is saving every penny to hire private detectives to find out what happened to Holden.

For ten years Holden has thought Griselda was dead.  The bad man killed her and took him away.  He became the person the bad man thought him to be.  He was no longer Holden Croft.  Holden Croft died along with Griselda ten years ago.

By fate, they are brought together once again.  They will have to let go of the guilt, the fear, the regrets, and the nightmares.  They will have to become Gris and Holden once again.  They will find that although they are now two entirely different people, they are still H + G. They still need each other for survival.

This is an extremely emotional story.  The reader will experience the horrors that these two children went through.  They will weep for the adults they have become.  They will ache right along with Holden and Griselda.  They will rejoice in the pure love these two have for another.

Never Let You Go is a powerful story. It’s a psychological thriller that is just as frightening as the real Hansel & Gretel fairytale. It is also a beautiful romance that has a happily ever after ending. It has action, suspense, emotional angst, and unforgettable romance.  I highly recommend this book.

This is the first book I have read by Katy Regnery.  When I looked up her books I was shocked at how many books and good ratings she has.  I quickly downloaded the first book in the Modern Fairytale series and can’t wait to sink into that one.  Katy definitely has a creative flare that delivers a fresh voice and enthralling story.
