If the synopsis of Plus One sounds familiar, you may have run across it in its previous life. Aleatha Romig, who traditionally writes dark romantic suspense novels, initially wrote this story as part of a writing exercise. Romig’s intention was to write “outside of her brand” and to expand the possibilities for her writing career. According to Romig, Plus One actually had its beginnings as a 12K-word funny, sexy novella titled Duncan: The Deal, which she wrote under the pen name Jade Sinner, a pen name she says no longer exists. She recently decided to expand her novella by transforming it into a full-length, standalone novel. In Plus One, Romig tackles a topic that is very popular these days: the office romance.

Kimbra Jones has been employed in the HR Department of Buchanan and Willis Pharmaceuticals for three years. During her time with the company, Duncan Willis has remained on the periphery of her radar. The handsome, wealthy owner of the company is well-known for his playboy ways, so Kimbra steers clear of his attention. Unbeknownst to Kimbra, she hasn’t gone unnoticed. He’s just been waiting for the perfect opportunity to spend some time with her. Duncan finally gets his opportunity when Kimbra catches him in an indiscriminate position with another employee, and because she’s desperate to find a date, Kimbra blackmails Duncan into being her “plus-one” at her cousin’s wedding.

In the interest of full disclosure, I didn’t have the opportunity to read this story in its previous format as a novella. I’m honestly not sure how much of or even HOW the original story translated from novella to a full-length novel, but it’s important for me to share that at some point I noticed a substantial difference in the writing.

Plus One is told from two points of view, alternating between Kimbra and Duncan. Where the story had its beginnings as a writing exercise – an exploration into a new genre – the writing had a noticeably different feel for Romig. The beginning of the novel is full of humorous quips that seem forced and a rushed sexual relationship between the primary characters. I know everyone doesn’t have the same opinion as me, but gratuitous sex, especially early in a story, doesn’t bind me to the pages of a book.

BUT, somewhere along the way, something magic happened! The further I read into Plus One, the humor felt more natural, the story became more interesting, and I began to notice the story had REAL substance. Readers learn about Kimbra and Duncan’s backgrounds via excellent, in-depth dialogue, especially as both characters strive to learn about one another. I thoroughly enjoyed the personalities and funny interactions with Kendra’s family. At some point during the first one-third of the novel, I realized Plus One had the unmistakable feel of an Aleatha Romig story! I was very excited to come to that realization, especially while reading a romantic comedy!

I’m a HUGE fan of Aleatha Romig. Romig is a talented, wickedly smart author, who always keeps me on my toes while she methodically peels back the layers of mystery in her novels. While Plus One doesn’t have the usual feel of her dark and mysterious romantic suspense novels, it’s a great start for Aleatha Romig in a new genre! As advertised, Plus One is a sexy, fun and lighthearted novel, which I am delighted to give a 4-star rating!

Michel’s Review

With Chantal Fernando’s latest release, The List, she is breaking away from the MC world and delivering a modern day romance that many readers can relate to. A love story based loosely off of a real life story, takes readers on an emotional journey.

It is not one of my favorite books by Chantal or my favorite kind of romance. I really don’t know if I liked it that much because it is quite different than what I usually read. The story itself can stand on it’s own and has it’s own unique kind of romance.

Readers are introduced to Taye; a modern, very put together woman who knows what she wants and is secure with who she is. While she’s out clubbing with friends and letting loose she meets Eli. There is an instant attraction and instant lust that leads to a very fulfilling one night stand.

For one month the two explore her list, a sexual list she wants to experience. Eli wants to help Taye achieve her goals. He’s up front and honest about not wanting a relationship or any ties. The two click in every aspect and their sexual chemistry is through the roof.

Eli eventually has to leave and thus ends their time together. Even though they have contact with another through texting, Eli has moved on to other women. Taye has fallen in love with an unattainable man. Eli doesn’t consider her feelings and won’t break their fragile ties which leaves Taye in a tough position. Her mind knows she should move on but her heart won’t let her.

Eli was quite mysterious and evaded Taye’s questions. She didn’t even know his last name, yet they clicked on every other level. So why did Eli keep Taye hanging on when he made it quite clear he didn’t want anything more?

Eventually both Taye and Eli find their happily ever after but it wasn’t easy.

I’m not quite sure how I feel about this story. In many ways I did not like Eli and felt he was stringing her along. On the other hand I found him very sexy. I think the thing that struck me with this story was the reality of it all. We all know someone who’s either been there or we’ve experienced this kind of relationship ourselves. It’s how each individual chooses the next step that matters, whether it is to hang on or let go.

I would of liked to get more background on Eli, seen things from his point of view. I think I may have liked this story more. Non the less, it was still a good story.

Michel’s Review

The Bird and the Sword Chronicles saga continues with the second release, The Queen and the Cure by Amy Harmon. I was quickly drawn back to the land of Jeru and their journey into a new era. This book can be read as a stand alone novel but I would highly recommend reading the first book in the series. It gives the reader a richer and more in depth reading experience.

The gifted are no longer the outcasts of society. They no longer have to live in fear. Like most things change takes time. It takes courage to take the first steps. It takes courage to stand out among men. Kjell of Jeru can walk into battle and defeat any enemy. He’s fearless but accepting his gift as a healer is another story. He has taken too many lives in the past without thought, how can a man of violence have the gift of healing. And what is the cost of using this gift. He no longer knows who he is or where his place among the new kingdom of Jeru is. He may be the bastard son of the king but he is not royalty.

When Kjell is sent by his brother, King Zoltev, to finish off the birdmen, he doesn’t realize that this quest is more than a expedition for the king. It is his destiny. When he saves a girl from death and takes her visions to heart, it is the beginning of a journey that will once again change the world as he knows it.

Badd To The Bone by Jasinda Wilder is the third book in the Badd Brothers series. This book is quite different from the two previous Badd Brothers books. First of all, most of the story takes place outside of Ketchikan, Alaska. There is very little of the Badd Brothers and their family dynamics in this book. In fact, Badd To The Bone is not really a Badd Brothers story even though Brock Badd is the hero. This is Claire Collins story and it’s a doozy.

I have gone back and forth on how to rate this book. I have deleted several drafts of this review. I have struggled with my reactions to this book because it was not one of my favorite Jasinda Wilder books. I honestly did not like the heroine Claire Collins.

Although the Badd Brothers series is more in the erotic romance genre, there was almost too much sex. At times I felt like the sex was overshadowing the story and it started to get too predictable and a bit boring. In many ways Brock Badd seemed like a sexual puppet dancing to Claire Collins whims. Usually at this point I put the book down or start skimming to the end. What held me back from doing so was my faith in Jasinda Wilder as a writer. I knew she had more to tell the readers. There was more to Claire than her nympho tendencies and kinky fantasies. There was something hiding beneath the surface, something bigger than her daddy issues and relationship issues. As the story unfolded and revelations about Claire’s past come to light, it is only the beginning of Claire’s journey. A very broken woman striving to piece herself back together one tear drop at a time. It takes courage to face the demons that haunt your soul. It takes even more courage to put them to rest and take that first step towards a healthy future.

I admired how Brock Badd was willing to fight for the woman he loved. He knew he couldn’t fix her but he could hold her together when all the pieces of her soul were shattering beyond her control. He gave her the courage to finally heal.

This is why I gave this book 5 Stars. Jasinda Wilder took a very harsh character on an emotional journey that brought her the right kind love in the end.

I am looking forward to heading back to Ketchikan, Alaska for more Badd Brothers romantic adventures.

The Mayson boom has detonated once again! Sage Mayson didn’t see the explosion coming, but all of us readers did! We have been waiting for this book.

It’s been quite obvious that Sage Mayson and hairstylist Kimberly Cullen have a history. They have been tip toeing around each other in the last few books. It’s been quite clear that there are some hard feelings and a bit of hostility where these two were concerned. To harbor those kind of emotions, there has to been some very valid reasons. While the circumstances may have developed and come into play in the previous books, the cause and effect become very clear in Until Sage. Unlike the other books, readers are going to see some serious Mayson groveling, a man on a mission to win his lady’s heart after he destroyed her. Never fear, Sage is a Mayson, he has that magical Mayson quality that is going to make Kimberly’s ovaries explode. She won’t make it easy on him. After all she has to protect her heart and take care of her own well being.

Without giving any spoilers away, this book was surprising. The impressions from the previous books were only a small fraction of what was to come for Sage and Kimberly. I will say that once these two finally got together, it was emotional and very tender. It is a must read in the Until series.

Aurora Rose Reynolds has delivered another swoon worthy explosive romance.
