Her voice is muffled against my shirt. “It feels so safe here.”

“Lara,” I whisper in her hair. “I want to keep you safe.”

She pulls back, and I loosen my hold. But she doesn’t leave. She puts her hand against my cheek, lifting her chin as she rises higher on her toes. Hell if I make her work for it.

Leaning forward, I capture her lips. They part, and our tongues meet, curling together as I hug her closer to me. She exhales a little noise, and her fingers thread in the sides of my hair. I trace a line with my lips to her ear.

“I want you so much,” I whisper.

She turns, searching for my mouth, and I kiss her. She fists my shirt in her hands, pulling it up and placing her palm against my bare stomach. I groan deeply, and my hands slide under her ass. I lift her against my chest, and her legs go around my waist. Our kisses are wildfire, fast-moving, lips pulling, hungry for something more. Something just within reach.

She moving subtly against my waist, and the blood rushes downward. I’m hard and she’s riding me, stroking my erection with her crotch.

“Lara,” I groan.

Ava

I’m just about to text Rowan back when the door opens, and he’s standing in the entrance. His face is unreadable. He doesn’t enter. He only waits looking like the most gorgeous thing I’ve ever seen in a dark suit and tie. He’s still wearing the glasses he’ll occasionally put on when he’s reading, and I rise out of my chair, closing the laptop before I go to him.

“I’m sorry,”I say, reaching out for his hand.

He takes mine and raises it to his lips before pulling me closer.

“What’s troubling you, Ava?”

I look down at my shoes, awkwardness filling my stomach.

“You didn’t have tocome all the way over here.”

“Why are you having second thoughts about the baby?”

I take a deep breath and sigh, lifting my eyes to his.

“It just seems like everything is in such chaos. What makes us want to bring a child into this mess?”

His dark eyes soften as they hold mine, but he doesn’t answer immediately. I love that he doesn’t pat me on the head and tell me to stop being ridiculous. He takes my fears seriously.

“It’s our royal duty,”he finally says.

Now I’m frowning.

“That’s your only reason?”

“No…”

He touches the side of my cheek with his thumb, and I wait.

“I’d also like to see what happens when we take half of you and mix it with half of me.”

My frown softens a little.

“I have dreamed of our babies.”

I remember my chubby, dark-haired daydreams.

“I expect we’ll have an overly analytical, extremely controlled little leader,” he says,and I sigh and nod. “Or a thief who steals cars and races them away.”

“Rowan!”

I push his arm, ready to storm across the room.

Tracey’s Review

I’m going to have to say that this is probably my favorite book yet in the Dirty Players series by author Tia Louise. There are all of the people that we’ve come to know and love (yes, even the crotchety queen mother) in previous books, and plenty of the intrigue that makes this series what it is, but something about this book just really grabbed me, and I could not put it down.

Maybe it’s that Tia Louise has so perfectly touched on issues that concern the world right this very minute. Or the way that Rowan, all alpha but totally adoring, makes Ava feel like she’s finally safe and home. Or that Ava has finally completely come into her own, and is an equal match for her royal husband. All of these things together make for an intriguing, passionate, pertinent read that I thoroughly enjoyed, and that hooked me from the first page.

There is all of the usual sizzle and steam that Tia does so well, and, oh, my goodness, was it wonderfully done here. The magnetic pull between Rowan and Ava is palpable, so much so that it virtually jumps off the page. They’ve absolutely found a way to keep their marriage fresh, and, boy, does it work. They are a true fairy tale, and so completely likable that I would love to see more of them. Cal and Zelda remain a breath of fresh air, and I loved catching up with them here.

DIRTY THIEF is a great blend of passion, political maneuvering, and just desserts, and I highly recommend it. An easy 4.5 stars for Ava, Rowan, and all of the folks from Monagasco. If you haven’t read this series, you’re missing out, and should add it to your TBR right away.
