Summary:

Sometimes you fall for Mr. Right. And sometimes for Mr. Right Now…

May

Did you hear the one about the girl who walks into a bar and catches her live-in lover kissing someone else? No? You’re the only one in town who missed it.

Luckily Alec is there to wrap me up in strong arms and carry me out the door before things get too ugly. And that’s not all Alec is good at. Our unexpected chemistry makes him the perfect rebound guy.

Alec

I should know better than to hook up with my rival’s little sister, but the fiery look in May’s eyes really turns my crank. She needs cheering up, and I’m just the guy for the job.

It’s not like I’ll fall in love. Not even after a string of scorching hot trysts, and the realization that we’re good at the same things: wild nights and familial disappointment. I don’t do love, never have, never will. So this is the perfect arrangement, for both of us.

Nobody would approve, but nobody has to know…

Michel’s Review

As an avid fan of Sarina Bowen and the True North series, I was thrilled when she announced the upcoming release of Speakeasy, the fifth book in the series. When I saw the book was May Shipley’s book, I was a bit intrigued because I love the entire Shipley clan. What I envisioned or anticipated was not what came to play. Sarina Bowen completely surprised the readers with a different path for May. Even though it was completely unexpected path, it was perfect. What I enjoyed most was getting to know May as an individual rather than her designated family role. It amazed me how strong May was emotionally, morally, and independently. Although she had many flaws and weaknesses , she embraced them to make them a part of her strength.

And then there is Alec. SWOON! I was surprised by this man who has been in the background of every True North book. The overall impressions were nothing like the man behind the bar. When Alec steps out of the background, the spotlight forgets every other character except the one Alec sees.

Sarina Bowen outdid herself! I loved Speakeasy and I think it may be my favorite book in the series.

Synopsis

There’s a first time for everything.

Lark Wainright used to be fearless. Her life was a series of adventures, each one more exhilarating than the last. But her recent overseas adventure was one too many. Now she’s home and in one piece. Mostly. But her nights are filled with terror.

When her best friend offers her a stay at the orchard in exchange for help at the farmers’ markets, Lark jumps at the chance to spend fall in Vermont. But her nightmares don’t stop. Desperate to keep her fragile state a secret, she relies on the most soft-spoken resident of the Shipley Farm to soothe her when her dreams prove too much.

Zachariah is a survivor, too. It’s been four years since he was tossed aside by the polygamist cult where he grew up. He’s found a peaceful existence on the Shipley’s farm, picking apples and fixing machinery. But getting thrown away by your own people at nineteen leaves a mark on a guy. He doesn’t always know what to make of a world where movie quotes are the primary means of communication. Before hitchhiking to Vermont, he’d never watched TV or spoken on the phone.

Actually, there are a lot of things he’s never done.

Zach and Lark slowly grow to trust one another. One night they become even closer than they’d planned. But Lark may still be too broken to trust anyone. When she pushes Zach away, he will have to prove to himself that he’s good for much more than farm labor.

5Star+

Michel’s Review

Throughout the True North series by Sarina Bowen, Zach has been a mystery.  The brief glimpses readers have encountered in the previous books has given the impression that he is a hard working, reliable young man that takes everything in stride.  We were also given little clues to his past.  He was ousted from an occult and turned up on the doorstep of the Shipley’s neighbors, who also had been members of this occult.  He was badly beaten, half starving, and desperate.  Coming from a sheltered environment left him clueless on how everyday life works in the outside world.  He had never seen movies or television, he had only read the bible, and he was a virgin.  Living with the Shipley’s for the past three years has gently introduced him to modern day society.  He’s become an avid Star Wars fan, an insatiable reader, and a part of the Shipley family.  His upbringing has left it’s mark on him, he is still extremely private and doesn’t express emotions easily.  On the other hand it has taught him to value friendship, love, and family.

I couldn’t wait to read this book.  I knew it was going to take a very special woman to peel back the layers that encompass Zach’s soul.

Lark Wainwright has known the Shipley’s for years through her college friendship with May.  After a horrific and terrifying experience abroad while working, she needs time to heal before she can immerse herself back into the world.  The Shipley Apple Farm is the perfect place to begin the healing process.  It’s harvest season and they can use the extra help.  Their family dynamics and easy acceptance is just what Lark needs.  She is secretly suffering with severe PTSD.  The only person that has discovered her secret is Zach.  His quiet understanding and steadfast presence gives Lark the support and courage she needs to face each day.  What begins as a friendship turns into a deep abiding love.  The problem is that Lark needs more that Zach’s strength.  Zach also has his own demons he keeps locked away and helping Lark is bringing them to the surface.

Both Lark and Zach have their own personal journeys to travel before they can have a healthy relationship.  They both have the strength to accept that.

The past will resurface in Zach’s life.  His insecurities will begin to make him question his life.  His true fear will weigh heavily on his soul.

Lark has more than PTSD to deal with.  She has to deal with her ex boyfriend, meddling parents, and the beginnings of a troublesome relationship that could ruin her friendship with May.

Once again Sarina Bowen delivered a powerful story.  Her gift of creating dynamic characters with life issues outside of the norm makes their stories come to life.  She added extra spice to the story by creating a little love triangle, a troubled friendship, and more than two lost souls trying to find their way in the world.  She gave the story depth and value by bringing life on the Shipley Apple Farm as the center of their world.  The emotional love story was the bonus.

I highly recommend the True North series.  Keepsake by Sarina Bowen is a solid 5+ star book.

Synopsis

BITTERSWEET (TRUE NORTH #1)
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the orchard.

The last person Griffin Shipley expects to find stuck in a ditch on his Vermont country road is his ex-hookup. Five years ago they’d shared a couple of steamy nights together. But that was a lifetime ago.

At twenty-seven, Griff is now the accidental patriarch of his family farm. Even his enormous shoulders feel the strain of supporting his mother, three siblings and a dotty grandfather. He doesn’t have time for the sorority girl who’s shown up expecting to buy his harvest at half price.

Vermont was never in Audrey Kidder’s travel plans. Neither was Griff Shipley. But she needs a second chance with the restaurant conglomerate employing her. Okay—a fifth chance. And no self-righteous lumbersexual farmer will stand in her way.

They’re adversaries. They want entirely different things from life. Too bad their sexual chemistry is as hot as Audrey’s top secret enchilada sauce, and then some.

Michel’s Review

Steadfast by Sarina Bowen is the second book in the True North Series.  It can be read as a stand alone novel or in series order.

Readers met Jude in Bittersweet.  He is the ex con and recovering drug addict that came to work on the Shipley Apple Farm for six months during his probation period.  He was convicted of killing his former girlfriend’s older brother in an accident resulting from being under the influence of narcotics.  Not only did he lose his freedom, he also lost the only woman he ever loved.  He is now a pariah in the small town of Colebury for killing the sheriff’s son.  Small towns have long memories and protect their own.  Now that his job is over at the farm he has no other options but to return to Colebury and face his ugly past. Not only will he have the daily struggles managing his drug addiction but also will have to face Sophie Haines.

On his return to Colebury, he finds his father’s auto shop is in worse financial condition than when he left.  His father has sunk deeper into his alcoholism.  His first course of action is to try to rebuild the failing business.  The sheriff wants him out of town and is using his influence and power to keep Jude from succeeding.  Jude is being harassed by the local law and his father’s garage is being forced to shut down.

Aside from the financial and business problems, Jude is struggling with his addiction.  He holds onto his weekly meetings at NA as his lifeline.  His other lifeline is the Thursday night dinners at the Shipley Farm.  He’s struggling but staying strong until he runs into Sophie Haines after a meeting.

Sophie was devastated after the accident that not only took her brother’s life but also took the love of her life away.  Her life changed just as drastically as Jude’s life did.  She’s moved on and has tried to carve out a new life but the aftermath of the accident is holding her prisoner in her small town.  Her family was completely destroyed and she is struggling to keep what’s left of their home going.  Her mother is broken.  Her father has become cruel, indifferent, and spiteful.  When he learns Jude has returned to town, he has become even more hateful.  Once Sophie runs into Jude and sees a different man than the one she loved, she’s even more determined to find out the truth about what really happened in the accident that destroyed so many lives.

Jude and Sophie were meant to be together.  They will have to conquer the past, live for today, and strive to make a better future.  The truth will finally set them both free and give them peace once and for all.  They will finally be able to love one another without anything holding them back.

Once again Sarina Bowen wrote a powerful story.  She gave the readers a truthful view of drug addiction.  She also showed how determination and perseverance are worth the effort.  I admired Sophie’s unconditional love and Jude’s commitment to becoming the man Sophie deserved to love.

Steadfast was an emotional and powerful novel.

Michel’s Review

I suddenly have a craving for apples.  I think it’s time to plan a road trip to Vermont. I will  pull up the Google maps for the Shipley Farm and speed like an indie 500 racer to get there.  I will purposely slash my tires just so Griff Shipley will come to my rescue ( hopefully shirtless).  I want to meet that Farmboy!

Sarina Bowen has another fantastic book to add to her outstanding bibliography.  Bittersweet is the first book in the True North series.  It features a sexy apple farmer / award winning Vermont cider maker and a crazy adorable sority girl/hopeful chef.  Head on down to the Shipley Apple Farm and let Griff and Audrey tell you their story.  It’s guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, swoon with excitement, and get deliciously drunk on love (or off the apple cider tasting like sex).

Griff Shipley moved back to Vermont to run the Shipley Apple Farm after his father suddenly passed away three years ago.  He gave up his professional football career to take care of his family and their heritage.  He went from being an athlete to a farmer depending on mother nature.  He has no regrets.  He embraces his responsibilities with a sense of grace and determination.  Farming is hard work that never ends.  It’s a job that consumes every hour of the day, seven days a week.  It is also a job that leaves a person with a great sense of pride and dignity.

When a blast from the past comes tearing down his driveway, he knows trouble has just rolled up.  The trouble not only has flat tire but also has the sexiest legs he’s ever seen.  Trouble is his old college hook-up, Audrey Kidder.  Audrey was not known for her brains, stellar grades, or virtuous ways.  In fact she flunked out of BU, flunked out of another college, and finally had to grow up.  Now she’s a new chef hoping to get a lead kitchen position or her own restaurant.  The only problem is that trouble seems to be her middle name.  In order to keep her job with the big restaurant conglomerate she has to become the liaison between the farmers in Vermont and the company.  She has to buy their produce at reduced costs or lose her job.  It’s insulting all the way around.

Griff and Audrey are going to butt heads and bump uglies.  Their attraction and draw to one another is overwhelming.  They are headed in different directions and lead very different kinds of lives.  Somewhere in the process of negotiating, sparring, and hooking up they are going to realize their worlds aren’t colliding, the are blending together like the perfect apples in the award winning apple cider.

Sarina Bowen is a gifted storyteller.  Her characters come to life and jump off the pages.  They have very distinct personalities that make the readers fall in love with them.  Their interaction in and out of the bedroom is delightful, fun, witty, and engaging.  The wonderful thing is that is not only the leading characters story.  Sarina develops a world filled with colorful characters that not only support the main characters but also scream for a story of their own.  I can’t wait to see what comes next for those sexy Vermont men.
