Excerpt from The Best Man by Andi Burns

“So, where are we headed tomorrow?” he asks.

“What? Nowhere. We are not headed anywhere. If Elaine needs me to, I might be going to see another photographer after I check out a venue, but you are not invited.”

“Why the hostility? You’ve been mad since we got in the car to go meet the photographer.”

His question is sincere; there’s no malice behind it. He’s not even being snarky. And yet, he’s still pissing me off.

And that pisses me off.

And I don’t know what to do about it.

So I take a drink.

And snack on some nachos. I can’t answer if I’m chewing–that’s just rude.

“Wow, you must be really hungry and thirsty…” he deadpans.

I nod, because my mouth is full. Also, if I open my mouth (once I’m finished chewing, of course), I might say hateful things.

“You’re also thoroughly pissed at me.”

Still chewing. Yep, chewing really well. No choking hazards here.

“And I can’t figure out why.”

I take a sip. You know, to aid with the chewing

He arches an eyebrow at me, and I might have returned it with half a smirk. But only half. I’ve given him too much of myself already.

In a move that would rival the swiftness of an NBA star, Ev swipes the nacho platter in one hand and my water in the other, holding both just out of my reach.

Now, at 5’10”, I’m a tall gal. I’ve got long limbs. But he’s taller. And he’s got the wingspan of a condor. So unless I want to cause a scene in this restaurant, I’m not getting my food or beverage back any time soon.

“Really? You’re withholding food and drink?”

“Yep.” I want to wipe that smile right off his face.

“You want to know why you piss me off?”

“I do.”

“Fine. It’s because no one pisses me off. I am fucking charming and goddamn delightful at all times.” I tell him this as I’m basically breathing fire in his direction.

“You were fucking charming and goddamn delightful when I met you in December, “ he confirms.

“Right? That was me in my natural habitat. I. Am. Lovely.” I seethe.

“While I’m in full agreement, the steam that’s virtually spewing from your ears causes me a moment’s hesitation.” Ev says.

“It’s because you’re back! You’re not supposed to be back! And you’re Elaine’s brother. You are not supposed to be Elaine’s brother!”

“Should I be taking notes as to all the things I’m not supposed to be or do?”

“No.” I roll my eyes.

“Wait, so is asking you if I should take notes one of the things I’m not supposed to do? Or is taking notes the thing I shouldn’t do? I’m just seeking clarification.”

“Oh, my God. None of this is going to matter because I’m going to strangle you.”

“Best to wait until after the boudoir shoot, don’t you think? You don’t want to rouse Lori’s suspicions. Plus, I know you want to see me naked again.”

I kiss him with abandon, with passion. I kiss him with my own demand, and then he tears his mouth from mine and backs me up until I’m pressed against his grand piano. “What are you doing to me?” he demands.

“This,” I say, pressing my hands under his T-shirt.

In reply, he tugs the shirt over his head and tosses it aside. “Is that what you want?”

“Yes,” I say with no hesitation, my hand caressing the musical notes on his arm, tattoos that say he claims who he is, he embraces who he is. I want this man. I give myself permission to own my desires the way he owns me just by being in the same room as me. And I’m not afraid of that. Not here. Not now. Not this night.

He grips the piano behind me, “Do you know what I want, Aria?”

There’s an edge to him again now, a dark edge that shouldn’t appeal to me, but it does, it so does. I ask the question he’s demanded. “What do you want, Kace?”

“Too much,” he says. “Too much, Aria.”

He means it. It’s in this moment that I understand the hot and cold I’ve experienced with this man is far more than I realized. He wants me. He doesn’t want to want me. He doesn’t believe I should be here. My defenses flare and my hand presses to his bare chest. “Why am I here then? You don’t want me here.”

“I want you, Aria. Very much. Too much. That’s the point.”

“But you don’t want me here.”

He cups my face and stares down at me, the hardness, somehow tender. “I do very much want you here.”

“You’re confusing me.”

“The feeling is mutual, baby,” he says, his voice thick with emotion that I don’t understand, that I’m not sure I’ll ever understand. But it moves me. He moves me and I reach up and cup his hand on my face.

“What are we doing, Kace?” I whisper.

He leans in and brushes his lips over my lips, a feather-light seduction that trembles through me. “This.” His mouth closes down on mine and his tongue licks past my teeth, a long, deep stroke that is seduction and power, passion, and dominance. I’m panting when his lips part from mine, linger there, his finger stroking my cheek.

“You, woman,” he murmurs, a hint of torment in his voice. “You are going to be my undoing.”

I don’t know what that means, and I don’t have time to analyze it anyway. Not when he reaches up and catches the zipper at the front of my dress, and heat pools low in my belly, every inch of me alive. I am alive with this man, a ball of nerves and desire like I have never known. Slowly, so very slowly, he lowers it, but his gaze is locked with my gaze. The zipper slides past my belly and halts at the top of my thighs.

His hands settle at my waist, and he leans in and kisses me. I can taste that dark edge on his tongue again, I can taste the demand, the absolute control. In this moment, I remain acutely aware of how much that control arouses me, how much it calls to me.

His lips leave mine, the hunger in his stare ravenous, but I have this sense that this is still about control to him—he allows me to see this. His control is a need, an absolute need that I understand. It’s the kind of need that we aren’t born with. It’s created. I find myself in contradiction to what I need, in wanting to give him what he wants. I am in fact wet and trembling with the idea of giving him the control.

But that means trust, the kind of trust that has left me alone and that I give no one.

And yet I am here with him. Haven’t I already made the decision to trust him, not with my secrets, but with my body?

His hands go to my shoulders, sliding under my dress, scooting the straps halfway down my arms. He captures me with the material, holds me with one hand, but I’m not thinking about being held captive. I’m thinking about his lips lingering above mine again, his breath a warm tease that promises a taste that does not come. He doesn’t kiss me. I want him to kiss me, I want it so badly that it hurts.

But still, he doesn’t.

He pulls back, his gaze lowering to the swell of my breasts, his fingers stroking the sensitive skin just above the black lace of my bra, my nipples puckering beneath the silk. His gaze lifts to mine and he catches the front clasp of my bra. He shoves aside the cups, his attention returning to my breasts, and my lashes lower with the heat of his inspection, a wave of unexpected shyness overtaking me. He has this way of making me feel owned and it’s intense, so very intense.

“You’ll have to trust me.”

“Right. Trust the man who hides so much.”

“You kept things to yourself too.” He ground his teeth, and I could see the muscle of his jaw working. 

Which unfortunately also drew my attention to his lips. And I could remember his taste, spicy on my tongue. The way he kissed, first with a sip that made you want to quench your thirst in one gulp. The slow, drugging kisses designed to make a woman moan without much effort.

Jesus, I needed to stop. I would not think about him kissing me, or him lifting up my skirt, bending me over the desk and spanking me. Nope, I was not going to think about that. “From now on, no more lies. I can’t take it. I need to know what you know.”

He narrowed his gaze at me then. “Got any more copies of this that you’re hiding from me?”

“Oh, nice. Real mature. That’s the only one. I’ve just given you my insurance policy; you have to give me yours.”

“No more lies.”

“Fine. And while we’re at it, can we get security for Telly and Carmen? Todd has heard me talk about them on the phone before. I don’t want them to be targets.”

The muscle in his jaw ticked. “Fine.”

I shifted on my feet. Do or die time. “Also, I’m not sure of the living arrangements. I don’t think I can go back to the loft.”

“You’ll be staying with me at Covington House.”

The way he said that, like a command, not a suggestion. That beautiful house with the pillars and the kitchen right out of Architecture Magazine. I hadn’t seen much of the space, but I would love to explore it. My brain slapped my pussy. Snap out of it, bitch. You’re not playing house. I cleared my throat. “I’ll accept because I have no choice. But so you know, if I had a choice, I’d be anywhere else but there.”

He approached slowly, as if he had all the time in the world. His smooth gait was catlike as he approached. The moment I could feel his heat I tried to back away. I knew I was weak. I’d lean in and sniff given half a chance. Stay strong. Stay strong.

“If it makes you feel better to say that, fine. But let me be clear. You and I, we’re not done. The conversation about us is still to be continued.” 

I swallowed hard. Because that sounded so much like a warning. One my body didn’t want to heed. I said nothing as I turned to head to my office. I wasn’t going to let him see in my gaze that I wanted to stay.

 

Tracey’s Review

Nana Malone’s BIG BEN was one of my favorite books lately, and THE BENEFACTOR, Book 2 in the See No Evil trilogy, picks right back up with all of the action, all of the passion, and all of the suspense that made Book 1 such a great read. There is not a dull moment with Olivia, Ben, and the rest of the gang working to bring down the Elite and right the wrongs of the past. Page-turning, nail-biting, edge of the seat twists and turns make this the perfect follow-up to the first book, and, just like before, left me impatiently ready for more.

If romantic suspense with plenty of sizzle and snark are what you’re after, this is the series for you. I fell for Nana and her characters from the very first pages of the first book, and there’s been no looking back. As soon as FOR HER BENEFIT is in my hot little hands, all will be right with the world, and all of my questions will be answered. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and snap these books up ASAP.

Charmaine Pauls was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa. She obtained a degree in Communication at the University of Potchestroom, and followed a diverse career path in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, photography, graphic design, and brand marketing. Her writing has always been an integral part of her professions.

After relocating to Chile with her French husband, she fulfilled her passion to write creatively full-time. Charmaine has published over twenty novels since 2011, as well as several short stories and articles. Two of her shorts have been selected by the International Literary Society for an anthology from across the African continent.

She wagged the pen at him and moved closer. “You know, it’s exhausting trying to keep up with your moods.”

“My moods?”

“Hot one minute. Cold the next.”

“Then don’t bother trying.” His voice was low and terse. He sounded mean. Good. He removed his sunglasses and gave her his flattest stare.

Charlotte blinked and then rolled her eyes. “For some reason I keep giving you the benefit of the doubt, that you’re not actually an ass. That you actually do like and respect me like you said back at the base.”

Novak opened his mouth to respond but she never gave him a chance to speak.

“But you’re grumpy every time I talk to some guy—” She cut herself off and stared at him with eyes that kept growing bigger.

He folded his arms over his chest. “What?”

She held his stare and he wished he had the strength to sever the connection.

“You’re jealous,” she said.

“Ha.” He walked around her waving a hand in defeat as he strode back to the Suburban. “That’s ridiculous.”

“Ridiculous?”

“Nonsensical. I’m not jealous. You’re delusional.”

He got in the cab and she opened the passenger door. “Not delusional. Spot on. Oh my god. I’ve seen more than a few signs. Like when I talk to or about Truman, you scowl.”

“That’s my resting bitch face.” He grabbed the coffee she’d purchased and left in the cup holder and took a slug.

“We’ve already established you’re attracted to me.”

The coffee spurted out. Oh god. She was talking about his hard-on that morning. He almost choked and grabbed a tissue to clean up the mess.

“You’re an attractive woman. I’m not blind.” He wasn’t gonna blush because of an autonomic biological reaction. Fuck. 

She strapped herself in and reached for her own cup as he went to pick up his sandwich. Their hands brushed. Both froze.

She didn’t move her hand away and he couldn’t remove his. The connection felt both ephemeral and fragile and like something he wasn’t equipped to deal with, was not trained for. He wanted to turn his fingers over and interlink them with hers. All the anger and embarrassment drained out of him. But the frustration built. People always say, “Don’t regret anything. It’s what makes you who you are.” That was said in a whiney, nasally voice. Did you hear it?

Well, those people, the ones trying to spew rainbows and sunshine up your ass about blatant mistakes . . . yeah, they’re only saying that because they fuck up on a daily basis.

Think about it, what REAL person is okay with all their regrets? No one. There is always that one thing you did, that one time, that you will always, always, always think . . . “What if I’d done that differently?”

It keeps you up at night.

You wonder, what transformed, what took over my brain, to utter such words. To alter your life completely and send it down an entirely different course.

Yeah, my life has been fucking altered all right.

Everything was fine.

I was pitching one hell of a fucking season for the Rebels, my ride or die team. I was getting along with my teammates, even the infamous Cory Potter, who made a splash after last season. I’ll hand it to the man, he really is the boss. I was getting laid whenever I wanted, which is always a plus for a guy who has massive amounts of adrenaline pumping through him daily, especially on a pitching day. And there were no strings attached.

None.

Yeah, I might have a rotation of women I call, but any single player in the major leagues does. You need the outlet. Even the prestigious Cory Potter had some booty call numbers before he found Natalie.

I was living a great life, and then it all changed. And it changed fucking fast.

Before I knew it, I was staring into my fridge at dairy products not made from a cow, but rather from oat. What the fuck is that? Oat milk? Explain to me where an oat has a goddamn nipple.

My toothbrush is made from bamboo, which gives off a very woody, splintery taste, and I’ve been using toothpaste tablets instead of paste from a tube . . . because apparently, tubes suck up life in the landfill.

The eco-friendly toilet paper in my apartment disintegrates in my hand and is worthless, making bathroom breaks a fucking nightmare.

And there’s a goddamn three-legged dog in a suit and tie sitting on my couch that goes by the name Herman, or Hermy for short.

I don’t have any privacy, I don’t even remember what meat tastes like anymore, and “Hermy” has a goddamn staring problem. And the three-legged motherfucker, yeah, he’s stealthy. I find him waiting for me outside the shower . . . staring.

When I wake up . . . staring.

When I’m trying to make a goddamn tempeh sandwich . . . staring.

Every time I tell him to “get a life” or to “fuck off” or for the love of Christ “get a new hobby”, he doesn’t even bat an eyelash.

He just stares!

I can’t fucking take it anymore.

I’m losing my goddamn mind and I don’t know . . . maybe it’s because I haven’t had sex in what feels like forever, or because my burgers are now made of imposter “meat”, or maybe because I’m forced to do things I don’t want to do. Either way, something needs to give, because I’m pretty sure from all the vegan shit I’ve been eating, my armpits are just about ready to spring their own mung beans.

Christ.

One phone call.

That’s all it took.

One fucking phone call from a person I cannot say no to, a person who will forever and always be . . . my insanely beautiful and free-spirited best friend.
