Synopsis

Maverick “the Avenger” Cage wants to rise to the top and become a legend in the ring. Though he keeps his identity well guarded, he’s known on the fighting circuit as the new kid with a chip on his shoulder and a tattoo on his back that marks him as trouble. He’s got a personal score to settle with the Underground’s one and only Remington “Riptide” Tate.

As Mav trains, he meets a young girl—the only other new person in the town–and sparks fly. When things get heated between them, he finds out she’s none other than Reese Dumas, the cousin of Remington Tate’s wife. A girl who’s supposed to root against him and a girl he’s supposed to stay away from.

But Maverick fights for the woman in his heart, and the monsters in his blood. The world’s eyes are on them and the victor will go down in history as the ultimate fighting champion; the ultimate LEGEND.

* LEGEND is the 6th and final installment of the REAL series, but it can also be read as standalone or after the three Remington and Brooke books (Real/Mine/Remy.)

LEGEND 2

Excerpt

It’s midweek already, and I’m halfway through my workout when I get a text from Brooke:

Hey! Huge line at the Underground registration, might pick up lunch on our way back home. Don’t wait for us – lunch home w/Diane

Me: Got it ☺ Will take Racer to park and meet you home ltr

I set my phone aside and scan the gym again. Some otherworldly impulse has me walking past the weights section. I cross the treadmills, bicycles, toward the mats at the end and the boxing bags. I scan the area where Maverick always works out. There are several guys at the bags now. None of them are as big, or mysterious. Or hot.

He’s gone.

Disappointment washes over me. I wait a bit, checking the time. Five minutes to leave for Racer.

Reese, you’re acting stupid.

“You’re looking for your friend? The one you come in with?”

“I . . . ah . . . yeah.”

“He hasn’t come in.”

“Right. Thanks.”

I head to pick up Racer from day care, meet Pete there with the stroller and our snacks, then sit Racer inside and push him to the park. There’s this spot I like under the shadow of a tree. I head there. “How was day care, Racer?”

“Okay.”

He’s scanning the park for dogs, I know.

“This is nice, isn’t it?”

I pull out his fruit bears and open them. He dives in.

“Racer, I ran extra hard today and I’m suddenly hungry. If I tell you an extra story tonight, would you give me one of your fruit bears?”

“Two stowies,” he negotiates.

“Okay, two stories, for two bears?” I shoot back.

He hesitates, then nods and lets me pull out two bears, examining my hand thoroughly. I let him open my palm.

“See? Two?”

He grins a dimpled grin that I could eat up, and then continues eating.

I shove them in my mouth and start to set up my blanket and stop in my tracks when I spot the figure doing pull-ups on the tree.

His T-shirt is riding upward due to the lifted position of his arms, and I can see the concrete-like squares of his abs perfectly.

His extraordinary eyes blaze and glow when he spots me a few feet away, not far from the tree. He drops himself to the ground, lithe as a cat and surprisingly quiet, and as he stretches to his feet from the crouched position he landed in, his eyes are direct and interested and warm. No, not warm. More.

There’s a flip in my stomach when his lips curl a little. He ambles over and I have the oddest sensation that he was waiting for me. But . . . was he?

“Maverick.”

“Mavewick!” Racer repeats, and puts out his fist.

He bumps fists with Racer. “Dude. Cool cap.”

He taps Racer’s Yankees baseball cap. Then his eyes lift to meet mine.

My stomach feels unsettled, but it’s not from hunger, more like from nerves or something like . . . anticipation.

“Didn’t see you at the gym today,” I say.

He shakes his head. “I talked to Oz.”

“You did?”

He gives me this quiet, perfect smile and simply nods.

“That’s great.”

“Yeah.”

We smile for the most delicious few seconds.

“So you’re fighting during the inaugural?” I ask excitedly.

He pulls out a page from his back jeans pocket. “That’s me.”

I take and scan the page. It indicates his accepting the Underground terms and rules of engagement, states his coach’s name, and then his name. A dangerous little chill runs down my spine when I read:

Maverick “the Avenger” Cage

And Maverick “the Avenger” Cage is watching me read this paper, studying my reaction.

My palms are sweaty all of a sudden. “Well . . . wow.”

My stomach is quaking upon seeing his name, I don’t know why. Maverick Cage. His name is a conundrum. Maverick means “rebel,” and cage . . . But it looks like this maverick is coming out of his cage.

He tucks the page back into his jeans. “I had to tell someone.”

“And you came to tell me?” If I sound bewildered, it’s because I am.

He stares into me, a liquid look coming to his eyes. “It wouldn’t be happening if it weren’t for you.”

“That’s totally not true.”

He glances down at the stroller. “I wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t tell my buddy here.” He fist-bumps Racer again and Racer giggles at the attention.

“Mom and Dad are busy, so I get to keep him for an extra while,” I tell Maverick.

He stares at me. He has a very stubborn, arrogant face, but when he smiles, pleasure softens his granitelike features. And he’s smiling right now. Dear me. “So he’s not yours,” he says.

“God, no. I wish!”

I can’t think straight when he looks at me. I feel naked. As if he knows that I’ve missed him. As if he knows that just looking at him makes me feel odd. Odd and oddly sensual inside. Responding to him.

I open my blanket and bend over to smooth it on the ground. Then I realize my butt is sticking out, the Himalayas of butts out there for him to see. In tight exercise gear. Fuck.

He kneels on his haunches at the edges of the blanket and opens his hand. “Share the blanket with me?”

His knuckles are still scarred. I can’t decide why I keep looking at them. I get a gut squeeze of empathy every time I see the bruises. His hands are huge. He plants them on the blanket, then shifts to lean back on his arms, stretching out his legs before him. Other couples are nearby on blankets. It feels intimate when I set my stuff down, and I feel myself go hot when I sense him watching me settle down next to it.

He spreads out just a little more and squints up at the tree, then looks at me in silence.

I search the picnic bag. “Want some . . . kid food? Or I’ve got . . .” I pull out my emergency Snickers bar, which I’m proud not to have touched yet, and I hand it over. “Plus one water and a drinking cup with a lid.”

I pass the drinking cup to Racer and hand Maverick the water. He takes it. “I’m good.” He opens the water bottle and hands it to me.

I shake my head. I’m not hungry, really. Or thirsty. My stomach feels full of butterflies again and it makes no sense, since I don’t even know him.

He shifts up higher on his arms, the flex of his torsal muscles visible through the cotton of his shirt.

“I almost thought you’d arrived to the gym and got yourself kicked out,” I try.

“Not yet. There’s still tomorrow.” He smirks.

And there’s a tinge of merriment in his eyes.

“Wee, and the ducks?”

I jerk my attention back to Racer and my pending business with him. “Right. I promised we’d feed the ducks today.” I quickly pack our stuff and then push the stroller toward the lake. He walks beside me.

I feel him watching me as I stop at the dispenser to fill up a cup of duck food.

“Mavewick, get me out,” Racer commands.

Maverick sweeps him up and sets him on his feet.

“Don’t go in the water, Racer, just stay on the edge, and don’t let them bite your finger. Do it like this. . . .” I show him how to cup his hand. “Or throw it in the water and watch them pick at it.”

He nods and starts throwing all over, sending the ducks after the nibbles.

I sit on the ground, the scent of damp grass surrounding us as Maverick sits beside me.

“Hey, I want to do something for you.”

“What?”

I can’t remember how to breathe.

I give him a moment to explain, but he’s not helping me out, only smiling. His face is open, friendly, his smile captivating. But his eyes are guarded, careful. I try to keep my voice indifferent.

“You mean for the gym?” I ask, a puzzled frown on my face.

He nods. “For that. And Oz.”

“Oh.” I shake my head, laughing softly. “It’s nothing, really.”

When he looks at me, he looks curious, and unsatisfied somehow. But a genuinely appreciative smile touches his eyes. “Trust me. It’s not nothing. It’s something, and I appreciate it.”

His open gratitude makes me so warm. He makes me feel impulsive.

“I’m in a healthy-living boot camp this summer. You’re meeting the new Reese,” I hear myself blurt out.

Wow. Did I just spew it out like that?

I’m so desperate for him to share bits of himself that I’m just totally baring myself to him without his even asking. Thank god he takes it in stride with an attractive little dance in his eyes.

“What was the old one like?” he asks easily.

I shrug and shake my head, not really wanting to get into that.

When he does nothing to fill the silence that settles between us, it leaves me with nothing to do but look up at him. I lift my lashes, and he’s staring at me with a look of total intrigue in his eyes. Wisps of hair tease my face, and I push them away, feeling really restless under that stare.

“Help me kick my own ass, and we’ll call it even,” I suddenly suggest.

He shakes his head with playful stubbornness. “We’re not even. I still owe you.” His eyes grow thoughtful, and he reaches into his pocket and extracts something. “Open your palm.”

He looks so intense that I open my palm and watch him drop something in it. “What’s this?”

“My IOU.”

I stare at the penny in my palm, then look up at him in confusion.

His voice sounds a little more harsh and textured all of a sudden. “I don’t have a lot right now, but I got this.”

“For a rainy day?” I ask.

“For any day.”

LEGEND 1

5Star

Michel’s Review

Legend by Katy Evans is the final fight, the final book in the Real Series.  Just like the beginning a champion is born and a legend is made.  The Riptide Fans have a new champion in the ring.  He’s out to make a name for himself.  He’s out to win the title. He’s out for the Riptide’s title.  He’s Maverick “The Avenger” Cage.  He’s going the distance.

Maverick Cage came out of nowhere.  The fighter world has never heard of this fighter.  Coaches won’t touch him.  Fighters mock him.  He doesn’t really care because he’s a man with something to prove.  He just needs someone to sign him on so he can get in the doors.  He will take care of the rest.  He doesn’t waste words.  He doesn’t waste time. He’s focused and determined.  Doesn’t matter if he is the “new kid” on the block.

Reece left her sheltered life to travel with the Tate’s and take care of their young son Racer. She’s taking this time to reinvent herself.  Time to become a better, stronger, and more self assured woman.  She wants to overcome her shyness and become less introverted.  She wants to capture the attention of the guy she has been crushing on for the past few years. This opportunity with the Tate’s is her chance to become the woman she wants to be.

An accidental meeting and a random act of kindness brings Maverick and Reese together in an unusual way.  She unknowingly gives Maverick the necessary means to opening the door to his dreams.  He gives her the courage to become a stronger woman by appreciating everything she already is.

These two silent souls don’t have to say a word to one another.  They already have the unspoken understanding that they were meant for each other.

As their relationship progresses and their secrets are revealed, it only makes them more determined. It doesn’t matter where Maverick came from.  It doesn’t matter that Reese’s secrets make her look weak.  It doesn’t matter if Remy “Riptide” Tate is in their way.  They are in for the final count. They are in it together.

Remy “Riptide” Tate has finally found a contender he can respect.  A contender that can make him a legend.  It doesn’t matter where he came from or who his coach is.  Remy sees the man for who he is.  He sees a bit of himself.

Legend is exactly what the title implies.  Katy Evans once again created an intense alpha male that is a true champion.  She also made her champion, Remy “Riptide” Tate even more charismatic than he’s ever been.

What a great finale for the last book in The Real Series.

“What the hell?”

Honor looked over. “What’s wrong?”

“My phone is going completely nuts. It sent me a whole bunch of text messages from myself. Look at this.” Was it possible to get a virus or a worm on a phone? And when had it happened? I held it out.

Honor squinted at it, then looked up at me, eyes going wide. “Oh shit.”

“What?”

“That’s not your phone.”

“What!” I pulled the screen back to look at it myself.

Below my number the content of the messages was only partially visible, but it wasn’t hard to figure out.

+1 (847) 555-2015

YOU HAVE MY PHONE! PLEASE COME BACK TO . . .

+1 (847) 555-2015

WHO IS THIS? I HAVE YOUR PHONE . . .

Oh. Fuck.

I thumbed the lock open and had to search frantically for the messages app. It wasn’t where I kept mine on the screen. When I found it, it had the number 15 in a little red circle. The phone app showed another red circle, this one with the number 6.

Oh double fuck.

I said it out loud. “This is definitely not my phone.”

“I already said that. So whose is it?”

I scrolled through the increasingly frantic messages from my number. Whoever had my phone didn’t give a name.

I tapped into the phone app and selected my number. Tension drew me up high in my seat, stomach flopping like a fish, and all traces of drowsiness gone.

Ring.

No no no no no no no, this could not be happening to me.

Ring.

Honor must have grabbed the wrong phone at the airport!

Ring.

Who the hell had my phone?

Ring.

God, it could have been anywhere. It could have been on its way to Katmandu by now!

The sound of my own voice startled me. “Hi, you’ve reached Clementine. Please leave a message.”

As the automated voice gave me my options at the end, I realized I had no idea what to say. But it was too late to think about that now. Beep.

“Um, hi. I’m the person who has your phone. I am so sorry. I don’t know how this happened, um . . . I’m, um . . . please call me so we can figure out what to do.”

When I disconnected, I shot Honor a look of death. “You took the wrong phone!”

“It was the only one there!” he protested.

“Obviously not.” My hands curled tight around the strange phone as I fought the urge to punch him in the shoulder.

“I swear to god, Clementine, it was the only one there. You left it plugged in; I grabbed it, end of story.”

“Then how did this happen?”

“How should I know?”

Serena the flight attendant appeared in the aisle looking concerned. “Is everything all right here?”

“Fine,” Honor snapped.

“Don’t be a dick. It’s not her fault.”

“Well, it’s not my fault,” he said.

“Well, it sure as hell isn’t mine!” I said through gritted teeth then looked at Serena. Time to channel my grandmother. I gave her my best Miriam Schulman-Daly patrician smile. “Everything’s fine. Just a little problem with my phone. Thank you.”

The pilot hit the brakes as we arrived at our gate and the plane filled with the metallic chatter of seatbelts releasing. Serena hurried back to the head of the plane and Honor got up quickly, like he was determined to be the first one off. I guessed he was avoiding talking about this any longer on the plane.

Probably for the best. Because I was going to kill him after all.

He seemed determined to stay ahead of me the whole time, using his longer legs to eat up the terminal all the way to the escalators to baggage claim. I was out of breath by the time I got on behind him, but that wasn’t going to stop me. Oh no. The longer I had to think about this, the madder I was getting. I poked my brother in the back of his head.

“I swear to god, Honor, if we weren’t surrounded by witnesses—”

He turned, looking sullen. “It’s possible there were two phones plugged into the outlet, okay?”

“Uh, ya think?”

Just then the phone started vibrating in my hand.

It was a call, and it was coming from my phone.

“Oh god, it’s him—her—whoever.” I didn’t even know since I hadn’t listened to the no doubt angry voicemails. The texts had been enough.

Ring.

Was I about to get screamed at?

Ri—

“Answer it!” Honor exploded.

I swiped the phone to life. “H-hello?”

“Hello?” A masculine voice replied and I practically jumped out of my skin. There was a fifty-fifty chance it would be a man answering, genius.

“H-hi,” I stammered. “I’m the idiot who took your phone.” Probably best to approach this humbly.

He sighed, making static in my ear. “Hi there. Thank you for calling.”

“I’m very sorry,” I said.

“Yeah, me, too.” He sounded resigned. “What are we going to do?”

“Um . . .” I had no idea. What were the options, even? Probably the easiest thing to do would be for me to get a new phone, disable mine remotely, and import my number to the new phone, but that would leave this stranger with a dead phone and I’d still have his. Now theoretically, he could do the same but that presumed he could get a new phone where he was. And that he had the cash to do it.

“I could FedEx it to you, I guess,” I offered. My heart quailed at the thought of trusting my precious phone to any kind of delivery service.

“Meanwhile we’re both phoneless while they’re in transit.”

“Right.” I followed Honor to the baggage claim area on autopilot. All my concentration was on the phone.

“And that assumes that they don’t lose our packages.”

“Yeah,” I said, sounding much cooler than I felt. “Not my favorite option . . .”

“Mine either . . .” the voice said softly. “The thought of never seeing my phone again hurts in a way that I’m a little embarrassed to admit.”

I laughed, glad to hear I wasn’t alone. Though probably for way different reasons. “Okay, so what then?”

“Where do you live?”

“Chicago. But I’m in California until Friday.”

“You’re from Chicago?” he asked. “So am I. But I’m in Florida until Friday, too.”

“So, do we wait until we’re both back and trade?”

He made a soft whimpering sound. “I guess we have to.”

“I promise you I’ll guard it with my life until I get back,” I said.

“I’ll take good care of yours, too.”

“Good morning.”

I look up and see Will step into the kitchen from the pantry. He looks a mess. He looks how I feel. I try to speak, but no words come out of my mouth.

“I-I made breakfast. I tried to make it healthy. You’ve been talking a lot about that lately, and I’ve listened,” he says, his blue eyes encapsulated by puffy eyelids. His hair is completely disheveled, as if he’s run his hands through it a thousand times. His five o’clock shadow is pronounced and his dimples absent because his lips are pressed so firmly together.

This is the first time I’ve looked at him since I found out. The first time I’ve ever looked at the man I married and felt anything but love, hope, and strength. It’s funny how a few hours have changed everything for us.

Seeing him makes my emotions crash against each other. Each second I stand here, I become more enraged. How could he do something so stupid, so selfish, and so… unforgivable? And he stands here like nothing has happened, as if we’re going to eat breakfast together and everything will be okay?! Nothing will be okay. I realize this as I stand in my kitchen in front of him, the same place he and his whore ate with me and sat with our family.

“I can’t believe you did this to us.” The words are automatic, as if triggered by his presence. They hurt to speak but hurt even more to hold in.

“Gwen.”

His voice breaks as he tries to approach me, but I step back and push my arms out to let him know to stay back.

“Please, just let me explain,” he begs. His voice sounds pained, and my heart aches for him—for me

“I can’t. I can’t. I don’t want to hear it, and there’s nothing that you can explain. Anything you say will only make things worse!” I’m frantic. It’s a lie; I want to know everything, but I don’t think I can survive hearing it.

“Gwen, you’re my best friend,” he says with tears in his eyes.

I have to turn away. I grab a chair to keep my balance. To see him like this hurts, but I can’t hurt for him. He didn’t hurt for me. I don’t even know if he hurts for me now. I’m sure he hurts for himself.

“I never meant to hurt you. I know how that sounds, but if I could take it back―”

“You did hurt me! Worse than anything I’ve ever experienced, and you cannot take it back.” My voice is loud and unrecognizable.

His gaze isn’t on me but set on the floor instead.

“In our home, William. How could you? With Lisa of all people!” I’m close to screaming at the top of my lungs.

“There’s no excuse for what I did,” he whispers.

His words make me want to throw something. To see him broken… I haven’t seen him like this since I was sick. A chill shoots down my spine.

“Were you seeing her when I was sick?” I ask cautiously. I don’t know if I can take hearing the answer. His eyes widen, and he approaches me; I retreat again.

“No. I stopped before I found out you lost our child,” he promises.

The pain of that memory shoots through me. I know he thinks what he said should give me some consolation, but it doesn’t. It tears open a wound I’ve tried to forget, a wound that has become purulent. “You stopped out of pity. You stopped out of a sense of duty, guilt, and a mournful promise but not out of love. Do you love her?”

He shakes his head. “It’s always been you, Gwen—”

My eyes narrow on his. “Except when you were screwing her.”

He looks defeated, as though he’s given up and realized there’s absolutely nothing he can say to fix this. I feel as though my soul is beginning to crumble. I can’t talk to him about this. I can’t think about this.

“I need you to leave.”

“Gwen, please. I’ll give you time. I owe you that, but we can get past this.” His voice deepens with each word to the more familiar, authoritative tone I’m used to from him instead of the sad, broken one.

“How dare you!” I scream. “You have a daughter, William! A daughter! How can we get past that? Tell me?!”

He covers his face. “I didn’t know.” He attempts to touch me again, and I swat him away.

“You didn’t know? You think that makes it better?” My whole body shakes as I shed angry tears.

Tears are falling down his face now too. He gets on his knees and grabs my waist. “What can I do? Tell me—what can I do? I’ll do anything. Please!”

I try to get out of his grasp, but he holds me tighter.

“We can get through this. I promise you we can,” he cries against my stomach.

I realize getting him to let me go will be futile unless I hit him on the head with one of the table utensils, so I gently grasp his face and make him look up at me. “We don’t have to do anything, and you don’t get to decide that. You decided to ruin us—everything we had, our family, our history, you decided that. I get to decide whether I can even consider the possibility of looking at you without seeing you as the person who hurt me more than anyone in my entire life.

“You have no idea how this feels, how badly I hurt. You can’t, because if you got it, if you understood, you would leave me alone. You’d know how much it hurts me to see you, to hear your voice as I look around our home and think about how you desecrated and disrespected the place where we built our family. And the very worst part of it all is that I was completely oblivious. I thought we were fine, that we were okay. I’ve been happy!”

“I’ve been happy too! I haven’t been involved with Lisa in years!” he shouts, and hearing him say her name makes my stomach churn.

I cover my face, trying to catch my breath.

“Is everything okay?” my son’s wife, Lauren, says from behind me.

“William was just leaving.”

His face falls, his expression crushed. “We have to talk about this.”

“I need you to go now! Right now, William.” My screeching makes even me flinch.

He glances behind me at Lauren, then he nods. “If that’s what you want.”

He wipes the tears from his face. I’ve only seen William cry once in his life besides today, and that was when his mother passed away. Now I have to squelch the instinct to go to him and hug him and tell him everything will be okay. A task made easier as my urge to lash out at him consumes me.

Laney POV

“Hi, I’m Ash. Are you by yourself?”

It was hard to be sure over the pounding music, but it sounded as if he had an accent. Something Eastern European, perhaps Russian? Polish?

I gave him a polite but closed smile, a cool smile that hid all warmth, a smile for slow servers and rude cab drivers. A smile for men I didn’t trust.

“No. I’m here with my friends.”

The man looked around him, then shrugged theatrically. “I don’t see them. Would you like to dance?”

And he held out his hand, obviously assuming that I would say yes.

I laughed.

“No, I’m not dancing.”

He frowned, his hand still suspended between us. “But you like to dance?”

I stopped laughing and stared, my gaze sinking into his, puzzled, annoyed.

“What makes you think I like to dance?”

He shrugged again and his hand fell to his side.

“You’re in a nightclub, and you’re not drinking. So you must be here to dance. Please, dance with me.”

He held out his hand again, but I shook my head impatiently. “Then go find someone who will dance with you.”

His eyes widened with surprise, and then he grinned as he leaned on the table, his perfect face inches from mine. “Maybe I want to dance with you.”

“Then you’ll be waiting a long time.”

He cocked his head to one side and I noticed a small beauty spot, shaped like a teardrop beneath his left eye—a perfect imperfection. Up close I could see that he was younger than I’d thought, younger than me perhaps, maybe early twenties. My eyes dropped to his lips and then to his throat. I could see a thin silver chain around his neck.

“I’m a good dancer,” he said, looking almost wounded at my continued refusal.

He wasn’t lying, but my anger, smoldering beneath the surface, ignited.

“I’m not dancing!”

“But everyone comes here to dance,” he insisted, his intense dark eyes so focused, it was unnerving.

“Not me,” I insisted.

He was making me anxious now and I glanced around for my friends.

“You’ll have a good time.”

“I don’t doubt it,” I snapped, losing patience. “Your last friend seemed to enjoy herself immensely.”

A dull red flooded his cheeks and he looked away.

His reaction surprised me. I’d hurt his feelings, but I wasn’t sure why.

“Maybe I’d like to dance with a pretty girl for a change,” he said softly, glancing up at me from beneath long dark lashes.

I enjoy writing in several different genres, and I’ve just published my first romcom, ‘Dazzled’.

All my books have a little me in them, and I’m inspired by the personal stories of those around me. It’s often from a simple discussion overheard in the train (‘Exposure’), in a café, or in the street, where ideas for characters or scenes come to me.

I fell in love with both Sam (‘The New Samurai’) and the eponymous Sebastian in ‘The Education of Sebastian’ and the sequel ‘The Education of Caroline’, and missed them desperately once I’d finished their stories. I love writing dialogue and always try to include touches of humour in the most poignant stories.

Synopsis

From New York Times Bestselling Author, Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

Sharing a summer house with a hot-as-hell roommate should be a dream come true, right?

Not when it’s Justin…the only person I’d ever loved…who now hates me.

When my grandmother died and left me half of the house on Aquidneck Island, there was a catch: the other half would go to the boy she helped raise.

The same boy who turned into the teenager whose heart I broke years ago.

The same teenager who’s now a man with a hard body and a hardass personality to match.

I hadn’t seen him in years, and now we’re living together because neither one of us is willing to give up the house.

The worst part? He didn’t come alone.

I’d soon realize there’s a thin line between love and hate. I could see through that smug smile. Beneath it all…the boy is still there. So is our connection.

The problem is…now that I can’t have Justin, I’ve never wanted him more.

Author’s note – RoomHate is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Excerpt

My heart felt like it was pounding out of my chest. Watching this whole thing unfold had made me totally lose sense of reality. I felt like I’d been experiencing every movement, every feeling right along with him, except I wasn’t allowed to come. It was as if I’d seriously lost my mind in the process. That was the only thing that could possibly explain why my body decided to betray me, letting out an involuntary sigh….moan? I wasn’t sure and couldn’t even tell you what it was except to say whatever sound I made caused Justin to jump back. His head whipped toward me, and his shocked eyes met mine for a brief second before I ran back down the stairs.

Humiliated.

Mortified.

My heart felt like it was in my mouth. Escaping out the front door and down to the water, I continued to run aimlessly on the sand. At one point, about a mile down the beach, it became necessary to stop and catch my breath, even though I wanted to keep running. I’d gotten so wrapped up in Justin that I’d forgotten how sick I was this afternoon. It was all hitting me again as I stumbled over to the shoreline and vomited into the ocean.

I collapsed into the sand and must have sat there for over an hour. The sun was starting to go down, and the tide was coming in. It felt like everything was closing in on me. I knew I couldn’t avoid going home forever.

What if he told Jade what I’d done?

That I was watching him.

Oh God.

He was going to crucify me for this.

What excuse could I possibly give him that would explain why I was hiding behind his door, watching him ejaculate like it was a Fourth of July fireworks performance?

I decided that I needed to get home before Jade did. Maybe I could convince him not to say anything. Brushing the sand off my thighs, I made my way back over to the house.

My heart nearly stopped upon finding Justin standing in the kitchen, drinking out of a half-gallon of orange juice. I stood silently behind him and watched as he put the container back.

Justin turned around and finally noticed me standing there. His hair was wet, making it appear brown instead of blonde. He must have taken a shower to wash away the awkwardness of our encounter. Looking painfully handsome in a brown distressed t-shirt that fit his chest like a glove, he just stared me down.

Here it comes.

I braced myself for his humiliating words. My heart was beating out of my chest as he just continued to look at me blankly without saying anything. He slowly walked toward me, and all of the muscles in my body tightened. He was going to get in my face and do it.

Shit.

Excerpt

“Ah, I see the little bird has awoken.” A voice echoed and my eyes sliced around the room looking for the owner. A soft chuckle was the only response as my eyes, wide and watery, refused to focus. Shadowy fluorescent light bounced off every surface.

“Where am I?” I choked, desperate for the answer while dreading hearing the voice again. My head felt heavy and confused, reminding me of the syringe they’d plunged into my arm when they’d taken me.

“Let’s find out just what you know, shall we, Princess?” The word turned my heart cold. Froze it to stone in two syllables. I didn’t need to see the face in the door to know who it belonged to.

Him.

Bile rose in my throat as my eyes shuttered closed in my only mental defense. I was ready for a blow, a bat, maybe a crowbar. Guys like him liked to leave a calling card on your face. What happened in the following minutes would almost kill me. One fragile piece at a time.

“When did you call the Feds?” John Ellis Walker, living embodiment of terror on the streets of Chicago, sneered at me with a crooked grin and chipped teeth.

“I didn’t,” I grit, my eyes remaining closed.

His hot breath washed across my face. “Bullshit.” He caught my elbow and tightened. Pain seared through my shoulder when he twisted my arm in warning.

“I didn’t. It wasn’t Hunter either,” I defended lamely. This was not the plan. Think fast, Erin. Think survival. “He didn’t have anything to gain by doing that, and neither did I. I don’t know anything.”

“You had everything to gain.” The pad of his thumb touched my chin and worked my jaw to the side before swiping his thumb across his tongue and smearing saliva down my cheek. “Wouldn’t want you dirty for when Prince Charming gets here.” He stalked back to the doorway.

My prince. Could Hunter really get here? Oh God, JW had taken me to get to Hunter. Of course that was the reason. A sob fell from my throat as I made a sad attempt at shuffling across the damp concrete on my knees.

“Why the hurry to leave, Princess? Fun’s only begun.” JW hauled me up by my shackled wrists and plopped me in a rusted metal chair, taking me by surprise and pressing a hunk of cold metal at my throat before I could blink. His rough hand slid through my snarled hair and gave a sharp tug. He stuck his nose against my ear and inhaled, the chilled metal still dancing across my skin as he took his fill of my scent. “No wonder Clu’s puttin’ it to ya. He’s got a thing for the sweet ones.” He tapped the metal at my jugular before pulling away. “Where the fuck did that snake you married put the money?” JW asked again, then released me with an angry jerk, taking a step back and tapping the barrel of the gun under my chin to raise my eyes to his. They fluttered open, my confidence boosted with the realization that if JW thought I knew where the money was, he wouldn’t kill me.

“I have some ideas,” I answered, holding his golden, serpent-like gaze. JW kicked at the legs of my chair causing it to wobble and tip to the cold floor, leaving me even more banged and bruised.

“Cut the games. Just like your slut mother.” JW kicked at the chair again. “I hope you don’t know where my money is, Princess, because if I find out you do, I’m pulling your pretty teeth out one by one.” His dank breath filtered through my nostrils and curdled my stomach.

“He’s here,” the other man I’d met at the VIP lounge only weeks ago boomed. He must have recognized me. How could he not? But then again, I probably wouldn’t recognize myself after lying on a grungy concrete floor, my body caked with grime and bruises.

“Perfect.” JW stalked from the room, slamming the heavy door as he went. I heard the scrape of an industrial lock announcing my dim fate. I looked around the room, spotting a window filtering a minuscule amount of daylight in. But the walls were at least ten feet tall, no way could I reach. I swallowed the ache in my throat as my gaze cast around the room. Nothing. There was nothing. My stomach turned, and just as I thought they could have at least left me a waste basket to throw up in, a gunshot echoed through the long tunnel of the building.

“Oh God.” No. No. No. My stomach dropped and I bolted to the steel door and pressing an ear to it. “Hunter. Please. Not. Hunter.” I sobbed and prayed in equal turn, waiting for anything to betray the truth of the situation.

Nothing. Cold, empty silence. My stomach burned and rolled before I slumped to the floor on my knees in reckless sobs.

Please, not Hunter.

Tracey’s Review

Book 1
Is there such a thing as coincidence? As Fate, stepping in when most needed? It would seem like it for Erin Warner, whose life changes completely when a chance meeting with a sexy and intense man results in a dream job. But Erin quickly learns that Hunter Ellis has his secrets, and that they may be better left undiscovered.

BLINDSIGHT, the first book in a three-part serial by author Adriane Leigh, is quite something. Action-packed from the get-go, from the mysterious prologue that had me wondering what I was in for, to the crazy ride that is Erin and Hunter’s relationship from the moment that they meet on a busy street corner, this book is a whirlwind.

The chemistry between Erin and Hunter is immediate; he affects her like no one else has. The dance between them is heady and erotic, and leaves no question as to how they feel about each other. They both realize that getting involved may be risky, but seem unable to help themselves. Lucky for us, because this is steamy beyond belief. Throw in the mysterious voice of Erin’s ‘watcher,’ and the secrets that both Erin and Hunter have, and you have BLINDSIGHT, a book that I just could not put down.

The killer part here, though? We are left with a cliff-hanger and a half. Some serious stuff is about to be revealed, then BAM!, ‘to be continued.’ I cannot WAIT to see what Adriane has in store for us in the next two parts, and am anxiously awaiting getting my hot little hands on them. Looking for a sexy, fast-paced, ‘what in the world is going on here?!’ read? Add this 4-star read to your TBR and settle in for the ride.

Book 2
Oh.My.Gosh. Adriane Leigh. This cliffhangery ending stuff is killing me! BLINDSIGHT: PART TWO picks up right where the action in Part One (ALSO a cliffhanger, I might add!) ends. And, the ride, oh, the ride.

Some of the questions that arose in the first book are answered here, as we begin to see more of what makes up Hunter, the man of mystery that swept in and took Erin on the ride of her life in Book One.

This book is just as full of hot steamy scenes and growing feelings between Erin and Hunter, and more mystery is woven, as the action builds to pressure point before leaving me going, Nooooo!

Come on, Adriane, don’t keep us waiting. 4.5 action packed, steamy, oh, no, you didn’t stars for BLINDSIGHT: PART TWO. Grab it, read it, and hold on!

Book 3
The wait is finally over, and the BLINDSIGHT series is complete. Adriane Leigh has really brought it in this series, rounding out the trilogy with the third and final (maybe?) book. Left with a heart-pounding cliffhanger in Book 2, I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how things played out for Hunter and Erin in Book 3. And, let me tell you, there was no disappointment here, because the drama, the nail-biting action, the over-the-top sexiness are all back in full force, and it made for a great wrap-up to this story.

I really appreciated how Adriane wrote the evolution of the relationship between Erin and Hunter, and how Erin emerges as a much stronger and savvier character by the end of the book. In the previous two installments, I saw her as a little more helpless, swept along by the strength and passion of Hunter’s alpha male energy, but, by the time all of the action unfolds here, she’s more than holding her own.

All of the questions introduced in the first two books are answered here, finally. The epilogue wraps things up nicely, while still leaving room for future adventures for Erin and Hunter (are you reading this, Adriane?!). This book, along with the rest of the series, is a solid 4-star riveting, compelling, intrigue-filled ride, one that you should be adding to your TBR.

Tracey’s Review

After finding her ex in a compromising situation, formerly happy and unsuspecting wife and mother, Lila Horton, is using her expert cheater-finding senses as an Investigative Photographer, meaning she works with a local PI, snapping pictures of cheaters. Yes, it’s different, but it works for her. When the case she’s working on turns into something more, and a hot guy on a motorcycle rides in to save the day, and everything around her is going crazy, Lila knows that the most important thing remains: no matter what else is going on, there is always room for cupcakes.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read by Bethany Lopez. Part romance, part suspense, part MC book, Bethany has written a story that is, by turn, page-turning excitement, steamy hotness, and laugh-out-loud hilarious. To be living in such a small town, Lila encounters a vast array of cheaters and criminals, and they make for some interesting moments. Added to her daily shenanigans, being mother to her 10-year-old twins, a hot new relationship with a sexy and mysterious biker dude, and girls’ nights out with her besties keep Lila hopping, and make for a really fun read. I highly recommend ALWAYS ROOM FOR CUPCAKES, and give it an easy 4 stars. Check this one out; you’ll be glad you did.

distraction teaser 2-2Excerpt

“Fuck no,” I snap, loosening my tie. The last assistant I had ended up being a clusterfuck. The woman was pissed that I wouldn’t fuck her. I finally had to fire her ass when she brought another woman up to my office and proceeded to try and get me to join them on my couch when I walked in on them half naked. Work is work. Yes, I might invite women up to fuck, but never anyone I work with.

“It’s not like she’s your type,” he says, and I feel my jaw tick. “Besides, if she’s up here with you, she’ll stop harassing the women down there.” He nods toward where she’s sitting and my eyes follow the movement, seeing her talking to a girl who looks a little startled by whatever it is Maggie is telling her.

“It’s not happening. You guys need to keep her out of the club,” I tell him, turning away from the window.

“Just saying it would be a good way to keep an eye on her,” he gripes, patting my shoulder before leaving my office and closing the door behind him.

Letting out a frustrated breath, I turn away from the window and try to focus on all the shit I need to get done.

“Yeah,” I pick up my desk phone when it beeps and looking at the clock, seeing that an hour has passed since Teo left.

“Look out your window,” Zack says, and I spin my chair around and scan the floor, wondering what he wants me to see. Then I spot Maggie with a man’s head tucked under her arm as she leads him toward the front of the club, with Lane and Zack following closely behind them.

“What the fuck is going on?”

“That guy tried to put something in some chick’s drink, and Maggie saw him and went postal on his ass,” he explains almost proudly.

“Jesus Christ, what the fuck do I pay you for?” I gripe.

“I saw the whole thing. I was getting ready to step in when she stood up on her barstool, jumped on the guy’s back, and then did some fucking ninja shit, wrapping her arm around the guy’s head and forcing him to his knees. She won’t let him go. She said she wants to ask him some questions.”

“I’m on my way down,” I say, slamming down the phone and jerking open the door to my office, taking the stairs two at a time. Reaching the front of the club, I see Zack holding the guy and Lane’s arms wrapped around Maggie’s waist, trying to drag her away. What the fuck is going on?” I roar, and all eyes come to me except Maggie’s, who takes the opportunity to grab the man’s ear and twist, making him drop hard to the ground on his knees.

“You think it’s funny to drug innocent women, you flaming turd bucket?” she yells, hitting the top of the guy’s bald head, and Zack chuckles along with Lane, but I don’t see one damn thing that’s funny about this shit.

“Maggie, let him go and come here,” I growl, and she raises her eyes to meet mine, looking startled.

“He—”

“I said get your ass over here now!” I yell, cutting her off and feeling the vein in my neck bulge as I point to the ground at my feet.

“Fine.” She pouts, letting the guy go, walking sullenly toward me as Zack pulls the man to his feet, taking him with him around the corner, with Lane following behind them with his phone to his ear. I’m sure they are going to have a talk and wait for the cops.

“Let’s go,” I say, wrapping my hand around the back of her neck, leading her through the club and up the stairs to my office. Sitting her in the chair in front of my desk, I walk over to the cabinets where I keep my personal bottle of scotch and pull out the cap. I then lift the bottle to my lips, taking a swig while trying to calm down.

“Alcohol isn’t good for you,” she informs me as I take a seat behind my desk.

“Do I look like I give a fuck about that?” I ask her, taking another swig.

“You might not care about what it can do to your body right now, but you may want to know that it lowers sperm count and stamina in the long run.”

“Jesus.” I shake my head and rub my eyes in aggravation.

“Just saying it’s not good for you,” she mutters, dropping her eyes to her lap.

“What happened downstairs isn’t okay, Mags.”

“Maggie,” she corrects, still not looking at me.

“Whatever,” I drone, taking another swig. “You could have gotten hurt.”

“I have a black belt—”

“Look at me,” I demand, cutting her off and slamming the bottle down on the top of the desk, waiting for her eyes to meet mine. “You could have gotten hurt or worse. Do you understand that? He could have had a weapon on him.”

“You don’t understand,” she whispers as tears fill her eyes, but I harden myself against them, needing her to understand this isn’t a fucking movie. This is real life, and there are bad—really fucking bad—people in this world.

“You’re not allowed on the club floor anymore,” I state firmly.

“I’m going to find the guys who hurt my sister,” she states, and I see the determination in her eyes that make me proud and pissed at the same time.

“If you come, you come to my office, and if something happens down there”—I point to the club floor over my shoulder—“you’ll be the first to know.”

“Why would I come to your office? I need to be at the bar where I can see what’s going on.”

“You just got the job as my new assistant,” I tell her, watching her frown while wondering what the fuck I’m doing. This chick is a distraction I do not need right now, or ever for that matter.

“I already have a job,” she says as her frown grows deeper.

“Well, quit. You’re here every night, Mags, and you don’t leave ‘til the club closes at one. I can tell by the bags under your eyes that you’re exhausted.”

“Why would you want me to work here?” Now, isn’t that the million dollar question?

“Either take me up on my offer, or I’m going to have a restraining order placed against you and you won’t be allowed within a few hundred feet of the club.” I shrug like it’s all the same to me.

“You know this is malarkey, right?” she stands and I take her in fully for the first time tonight. Her loose, sheer, black dress is cinched with a thin belt emphasizing the dip in her waist between her full hips and breasts. Her hair is down in a mass of messy waves, and her makeup is subtle but still draws attention to her eyes, which look even more golden now that she’s standing in front of me looking pissed off.

“I’m not messing around with you anymore either. You take me up on my deal, or I’ll call the police and have them escort you off the premises,” I tell her, ignoring the fact I’m getting hard just looking at her.

“This is total crap,” she mumbles, looking around before meeting my eyes again.

“Take it or leave it.”

“Jeez, can I have a second to think?” she cries, and I feel my lips twitch, so I rub my hand down over my mouth to hide it.

“Ten,” I state, watching her eyes narrow. “Nine…eight…seven…” I continue counting, watching as she looks at me like she’s ready to kill me. “Six,” I raise a brow. “Five…”

“Fine!” she yells when I open my mouth to finish my countdown.

“Thought so,” I say triumphantly.

“You’re such a…you’re such a bigasterd,” she growls.

“A what?” I ask, and I can’t help it, I laugh at that one.

“When do I start?” she asks, ignoring my question while red spreads across her cheeks and down her neck.

“Tomorrow. Be here at five, and I’ll show you around the club and tell you your responsibilities.”

Michel’s Review

Distraction by Aurora Rose Reynolds is the third book in the dynamic Underground King series.  Fans of this series have been waiting for Sven’s book.  We were briefly introduced to Sven in the Until series and got a bigger teaser in the previous Underground King books.  This mysterious man has captured our attention.

Let me say this…Sven is everything we hoped he would be!  This sexy man is a modern day Viking!

Sven is successful club owner in Vegas.  He runs a tight ship.  Everything is in order and follows a procedure.  This includes his personal life as well.  Sex is another task on his to do list.  Get in, get it done, and move on.  That is until Maggie enters his club and turns his world upside down.  This spitfire of a woman can reduce Sven to a mere schoolboy.  She is a sexy blaze that is feeding Sven’s fire.

Maggie is looking for the guy that drugged and hurt her sister.  When she makes it a mission and disrupts the club, Sven has take matters into his hands.  What does he do? He hires Maggie to be his assistant. He can keep her from disrupting his club and keep her distracted with work. What he doesn’t realize is that he’s the one who is going to be distracted.

Falling in love isn’t what Sven planned on.  He’s in the middle of a war and he doesn’t want Maggie on his enemies radar.  But the battle is on and the only thing he can do is make sure that all the people he cares about are safe.

With the backup of Keaton ( Assumption) and Kai ( Obligation) they will conquer their enemy.  They will enlist the help of our favorite geeky man-boy Justin, seek relationship advise from the Mayson’s, and bring in some new hot security guys.  The sexy women in their lives will make the safe house much more lively.  It will be Distraction in the best possible way.

Aurora Rose Reynolds has once again graced us with her special magic.  She writes a sexy, fun, suspenseful romance that has the readers falling in love.  Her writing style is effortless and uplifting.  I finish every book with a big smile and warm heart.

What’s up next for the Underground Kings?  Our favorite man-boy Justin.  The boy has grown up and set aside his game controller.  Instead of playing Call of Duty, he has become an actual warrior.  I’m sure he can leave his Dorito crumbs anywhere he pleases.

Read Distraction… it’s guaranteed to entertain and distract you from your ordinary world.

as·sump·tion:

a thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof

They say when you assume that you make an ass out of you and me. Kenton Mayson learned this lesson firsthand when he made assumptions about Autumn Freeman and the kind of woman she is based on what little information he had. What he finds out is she’s not only beautiful, but also smart, funny, a fighter, and exactly the kind of woman he wants to share his life with. Autumn made assumptions of her own about Kenton, and now he needs to prove her wrong in order to protect her and their future.

[ob-li-gey-shuh n]

An obligation is a course of action that someone is required to take, whether legal or moral.

Myla was sent to a family her father and mother had chosen for her when they knew their time on earth was almost up.

Kai has been watching Myla from afar since he took over the family business from his father and inherited the responsibility of keeping her safe.

When word gets back to Kai that Myla is in danger he immediately jumps into action and does the only thing that can be done at the time by marrying her.

To Kai, Myla is an unwanted obligation, something that has to be done in order to protect the family business. And to Myla, Kai is another man who she believes will let her down. Neither Myla nor Kai would have thought that something that started off as a farce would become the most important thing either of them could’ve ever done.

Distraction: The great intensity, novelty, or attractiveness of something other than the object of attention.

Sven is a man who takes pride in his ability to separate himself from his emotions. He’s a man who knows who he is and where he’s going in life, a man who needs no one, because needing someone, anyone, is a weakness.

His past taught him love isn’t enough.

Maggie wants the happily ever after, but has never picked the right men, or stuck around long enough, to build a forever. It’s always been easier to get out early, before emotions make things messy.

When Maggie wakes up naked in Sven’s bed, with no memory of the night before, these two must be honest about their feelings and face their fears, so they can build a future together.

Will love be enough for them to get their happy ending together, or will a threat from outside strike them down before they ever have a chance?

This book contains an over the top alpha who knows what he wants, it also contains sexual situations that may not be suitable for younger audiences.
