Synopsis

From the USA TODAY bestselling author of Sweet Thing and Nowhere But Here comes a deeply emotional contemporary romance about the second chances waiting beyond the shattered dreams of youth.

Under the bright arena lights of a rodeo show, young Avelina Belo falls for a handsome cowboy with a larger-than-life personality. After a whirlwind courtship, she happily moves away from her family in northern California and settles into married life with her cowboy on a seven-thousand-acre cattle ranch in Montana. One freak accident later, Avelina’s hopes for the future come to an end.

Nate Myers graduated from UCLA medical school at the top of his class, ready to follow in the footsteps of his father, a superstar cardiothoracic surgeon. Six years later, Nate’s career is being ruined by a malpractice suit. Questioning himself for the first time, he retreats to a Montana cattle ranch to visit his uncle and gain perspective. There, he meets a beautiful young woman named Avelina who teaches him more than he ever knew about matters of the heart.

Robin’s Review

I noted a couple of outstanding characteristics about Renee Carlino’s writing while reading After the Rain, her third full-length contemporary romance. First, each story written by Carlino is very distinct from her previous novels. And second, her writing flows beautifully – something which has never been more evident to me then when reading this novel. After the Rain is a story about second chances, about recovering from tragedy, and about hope.

Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo grew up on a cattle ranch in Central California. After meeting Jake McCrea at a rodeo, she fell in love. Three short months later, eighteen year-old Avelina dropped out of high school and married her cowboy. Jake and Avelina settled on a ranch a hundred miles northeast of Great Falls, Montana, earning their living as wranglers. After a brief period of happiness, Avelina experienced heartbreaking tragedy. And now, years later, she is terribly misunderstood.

Nate Meyers is following in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from UCLA Medical School, Nate has become the youngest attending surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center, where his father is chief of staff. As a cardiothoracic surgeon, Nate has a promising future ahead of him. He works extremely hard and his career has always come first in his life. After making a poor judgment call during surgery, Nate becomes involved in a medical malpractice lawsuit. His father grants him a one month leave of absence from work, sending him to visit his Uncle Dale on a ranch in Montana to gain some perspective on life. In the most unlikely place, Nate meets the reclusive Ava McCrea.

The plot and setting of After the Rain combine to make this story so unlike any other contemporary romance that I have ever read. Although parts of this story are tragic, I feel the overall mood of After the Rain is one of quiet beauty. Much of this story involves scenes in nature, such as riding horses and being outdoors under the big sky of Montana. I had trouble connecting with Ava’s character, although I believe the reason that I felt this way had more to do with her circumstances in life. I loved the ending to After the Rain! Without giving away what happens, I feel the unique method in which Carlino ends this novel strengthens the story, really bringing out my emotions when I was reading! My overall impression of After the Rain is beautiful, favorable, earning Carlino a solid 4-star rating.

Michel’s Review

Renee Carlino has another success with After The Rain.

After The Rain is an emotional book that not only gives the main characters the love of  a lifetime, it is a story about second chances in life.  It’s a story of emotional growth and acceptance.

Two unlikely people come together and find more than love. Avelina Jesus de los Santos Belo has suffered a great loss at a very young age.  After the death of her father her family is torn apart.  When she meets the charming young cowboy at a rodeo, she drops out of high school and marries at the very young age of eighteen.  Her young love is her world until tragedy strikes and destroys her life.  Rather than grieving and moving on in life, Avelina is stalled.  She feels guilt for living, she feels responsible for the loss of her husband’s life, and she’s lost the only love she has ever known.  When Nate Meyers arrives on the ranch, she begins to change.  She realizes that no matter what, she is still the one who is living and that it might be time to let go and move on.

Nate Meyers has always wanted to be cardiothoracic surgeon.  He has focused his entire life on that goal.  He reached this goal at an early age after sacrificing much of his youth.  Now he has the career he has always wanted.  When a surgery goes wrong and Nate loses a patient, it is more than a professional loss he is feeling.  He suddenly is questioning his life choices and sacrifices.  He is questioning his career and purpose as a doctor.  A visit to the ranch and introduction to Avelina will change everything.

Nate and Avelina will find a new life that is waiting for them.  It doesn’t necessarily mean that this new life is with them together as a couple.  They will have an emotional journey that will forever change how they are as individuals.  It is a journey of emotional growth and learning what matters most in life.

Renee Carlino wrote a touching story that was mature, insightful, and beautiful.  I highly recommend After The Rain.

Synopsis

He’s about to make his own luck.

Ten years ago, Beau Dumont made the biggest mistake of his life by letting his high school sweetheart, Devyn Mauvais, slip through his fingers. Now the reformed bad boy will stop at nothing to get her back. Even if it means tricking her into taking a job on his family’s riverboat, the Belle of the Bayou.

When Devyn’s old flame offers her a stint at the boat’s day-care center, she sees it as a chance to prove she isn’t just the descendant of Louisiana’s most infamous voodoo queen. Besides, it beats leading ghost tours around New Orleans. Yet when it comes to Beau, Devyn’s all business. She won’t give the sweet-talking playboy another chance to break her heart.

But there’s no escaping temptation in such close quarters, and Beau won’t be satisfied with a few hot nights with the girl he’s always loved. As he strives to make Devyn remember the good times, will his passion and heart be enough to regain her trust?

Tracey’s Review

Devyn Mauvais is a little down on her luck. Laid off from her job, she’s doing her best to dodge the bill collectors and still be upbeat enough to put on a good face at her high school reunion. But it seems like Fate might just be playing with Devyn a bit, and showing her who’s boss (Hint: it isn’t Devyn!). Beau Dumont broke Devyn’s heart ten years ago, making her fall in love with him, then disappearing for a decade. But he’s back home and ready to turn back the clock with Devyn, whether she’s willing or not.

MAKE YOU REMEMBER is the second book in Macy Beckett’s THE DUMONT BACHELORS series. I’m a big fan of second-chance love stories, so this one had me from the get-go. The fact that Devyn is completely no-nonsense and strong immediately made her a winner in my book. And Beau, oh, my goodness, he is all man, and totally swoon-worthy. Their banter was playful, snarky, and waaaay hot, always a nice combination in a romance.

This book is one of those unexpected pearls, the ones where I have no idea what to expect, and am immediately swept up into the story and the characters. The humor, the heat, the characters, all combined in MAKE YOU REMEMBER to create a book that I didn’t want to put down until I knew the whole story. Macy Beckett has created two families with unique and likeable personalities, and has done such a good job with Devyn and Beau that I want to go back and read MAKE YOU MINE (Book 1), as well as look forward to future books in the series.

They are called Butterfly Children.

Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is an inherited connective tissue disease causing blisters in the skin and mucosal membranes, with an incidence of 1/50,000. It is a result of a defect in anchoring between the epidermis and dermis, resulting in friction and skin fragility. Its severity ranges from mild to lethal. (according to Wikipedia)

The lead male and his best friend suffer from this challenging and painful disease, but in varied degrees. The characters, primary and otherwise, are written very well and most are extremely likable. It’s hard NOT to become emotionally attached to some of these characters. Their interaction and dialogue is completely believable. Ms Milan’s writing flows so smoothly, the pages just seem to fly by. There are many struggles and conflicts to overcome in this book, some easily conquered while others are more complicated. It had a maturity and realness that often is not found in stories today. The conclusion is fairly solid, but the big question remains unanswered, perhaps to emphasize that it should not matter.

Overall, this book is emotional. It is thought-provoking. It makes you want to learn more about EB. Mission accomplished, Ms Milan. Well done.

Author Bio:

EXCERPTS:

Behind Her Eyes by A.L. Jackson

Now I could feel him, his eyes all over me, caressing me slowly, up and down.

I let all my insecurities drift away as I swayed in time to the music, in sync with the throb of the crowd and the intermittent lights that glowed against my lids.

A charged moment passed, before strong hands found my hips and gripped them from behind. For a beat, I stiffened, before I again gave in to this sublime release. And again, he felt good. Right. All this intense energy that ricocheted between us wrapped me up in a frenzy of nerves, alight and alive. The smell of him took me whole, all soap and man and sex.

Oh God.

My heart beat frantically, racing to keep up with my thoughts that were spiraling out of control.

A shimmer of fear slithered through me, before he pulled my back into the safety of his firm chest.

And that was what I felt.

Safe.

With him, and I didn’t know why, and I was searching inside myself for resolve, for the commitment I’d made to never allow myself to be so easily played again.

But it was just out of my reach.

Darryn held me close, our bodies moving in time, like we shared the same breath, the same space.

I leaned back, my head on his shoulder as his face found the curve of my neck. Chills sped, spinning my body into a violent cataclysm of need. He let his hands roam, palms pressing hard as he ran them down the front of my legs, spanning them wide as he trailed them back up to my hips and over my stomach.

Fingertips dipped into my ribs as he slid them up the curve of my sides, and he lifted my arms as he went, in the same fluid motion fastening my hands around the back of his neck.

All those butterflies scattered, a clash of discordant wings that fluttered haphazardly through my insides, leaving my stomach in a coiled mess of confusion and need.

Why him? Why now?

Holding me close, he brushed his mouth over the shell of my ear, his whispered words injected directly to my manic heart. “Goddamn, Misha. What are you trying to do to me?”

I suddenly found it impossible to breathe, because it was him who was slowly undoing all the fibers of reservation woven through my weakened spirit.

“Can’t get you off my mind.” He leaned in closer, his hand sweeping up my stomach. Fingers brushed between my breasts, and I released a sharp gasp.

“Been dying to touch you,” he murmured low.

SAVING ME – MOLLY McADAMS

“I’m about to embarrass the hell out of myself, but I don’t care anymore. I feel like when I’m near you, I’m safe, and it makes no sense to me. It is the weirdest feeling to have with someone I only know three things about.”

My eyebrows rose at that and I turned to fully face her. “Three?”

“Yes. Three things. Your name is Kier, you’re extremely quiet, and you are the biggest puzzle I’ve ever tried to figure out.”

I’m the puzzle?”

“Yes!” she said in exasperation.

That had to have been the most backward statement I’d ever heard. “And why am I a puzzle?”

“Because of what I just told you. I don’t know you, you don’t even talk to anyone, and I feel safe when you’re near me! Why is that? I feel like I’m going crazy because all I’ve been able to think about for these past two weeks is you, and how every time you open your mouth it’s like déjà vu, and I just—I don’t know what’s happening.” Her green eyes were massive and she looked like she was on the edge of losing her shit.

I took a few steps toward her and lowered my voice. “Calm down, Indy. You’re fine.”

“I just don’t understand,” she said loudly, the pitch of her voice rising. “Do you believe in past lives?” she asked suddenly.

I paused, a laugh slipping past my lips. “I’m sorry, what?”

“Past lives? Like that whole stupid YOLO saying is really just bullshit, because we’re about to get another shot down the road?”

I tried to contain my smile, but she was really fucking adorable when she was like this. “What does that have to do with what you’re freaking out over?”

“In stories with soul mates they find each other no matter what in every life. And it’s like they have a weird connection they can’t explain.”

I closed the distance between us and dropped my head so I was looking directly into her eyes. “Are you saying we’re soul mates?”

“No!” she said, horror lacing her voice, her cheeks filling with heat.

“I think you were,” I teased.

“I wasn’t, I was just saying that in stories . . . I don’t know what I’m saying, okay? But I don’t get what’s going on with us!”

“So now there’s an us?”

“Oh my God,” she whispered. “I need to stop talking.”

I laughed and took a step back. “I’m teasing you, Indy. And no, I don’t believe in past lives. I think we have this one, and that’s it.”

She sighed, and her body visibly relaxed. When she spoke again, she sounded exhausted—and in a way, defeated. “I don’t, either, but I can’t figure out how to explain this feeling like I know you.”

I ground my jaw for a few seconds as her green eyes held mine. “Because maybe you do know me. You’re just not ready to remember why.”

Beneath Your Layers- Christina Lee

I motioned for the bar. “Want me to get you a soda or a water?”

Chloe stared at me for another long moment before she said, “No, thanks.”

We listened to the next song quietly standing beside each other, lost in our own thoughts. Until she turned to me and said, “Truth or dare?”

“Dare,” I said, almost breathless. Given her mood, maybe she’d give me something good this time.

“Your turn, Blake,” she said. “Do something spontaneous.”

My fingers trembled from wanting to touch her so badly and all I could think about was doing just that.

“You sure that’s what you want?” I said, turning and backing her against the wall.

“Yes,” she breathed out.

“Something spontaneous or something I’ve been thinking about doing for days?” I said, my lips coming closer to hers. “Maybe weeks?”

Her breath caught. “It . . . it’s your call.”

My head swung forward, our foreheads practically touching. Fluttery breaths were escaping her lips. I place my arms on either side of her head and she bit down on her lip.

My heart thrashed in my chest and all I could think about was how desperate I was to kiss her, but how nervous I was to blow this opportunity.

So I attempted to read her signals and they were definitely mixed. Her eyes flitted between panic and lust.

When I pinned my hip against hers, I could’ve sworn I heard a low moan in the back of her throat.

“Please,” she rasped out. “Please . . . don’t . . . Blake.”

My stomach was in my throat. Fuck, either I’d scared her or I’d been reading her wrong.

I leaned back to give her space, but her fingers suddenly skimmed across my waist, clenching my shirt and drawing me nearer.

“Don’t what?” I asked in confusion. She was so fucking messing with my head.

“Don’t . . .” She was panting now. “Don’t stop.”

Fouling Out- Tiffany King

The warmth inside the building was soothing after walking from the car outside. I felt mildly disappointed when Dalton dropped his arm from my shoulders, until he reached for my hand. As we strolled along, I became hyperaware of how something as innocent as handholding could become somewhat erotic while sipping wine together. Dalton slid his thumb across the top of my hand in slow methodical strokes before gently caressing my pulse point. The hairs on the back of my neck felt as if they were standing on end. Each sweep of his thumb was a sensual dance with my sensitive skin, making it tingle.

It was becoming apparent to me that it might have been a bad call on my part to skip lunch. Between the scent of Dalton’s cologne and the alcohol I was consuming, I was already feeling slightly intoxicated. I nibbled on a few cubes of cheese to attempt to alleviate the buzzing in my head. Dalton’s breath teased my neck, making me shiver in a good way. I should have put some distance between us so I could regain my bearings, but instead I snuggled closer to him, wishing we were somewhere else with a lot fewer people around.

All the air escaped my lungs as Dalton slowly captured a bead of wine from my bottom lip with his finger. I watched with bated breath as he moved the finger to his own mouth, sucking the drop of wine. It was all I could do not to moan as my insides turned to putty.

“You need to stop looking at me like that,” Dalton murmured in my ear.

“Like what?” I licked the rest of the wine off my lip with the tip of my tongue.

This time it was Dalton who groaned softly. Placing his hands on my hips, he slowly backed me into a dim corner, away from prying eyes. “Like you’re thinking how great it would feel if I hoisted you up on that wine barrel table over there with your legs wrapped around my waist.”

“Are you sure that’s not you thinking that?” My hips responded almost instinctively as he pulled me snugly against his body. I could feel him, rock hard, pressed to my stomach. The wanting desire I had been keeping at bay from the moment he showed up at my house looking practically delectable with low-riding jeans and a black V-neck sweater that accentuated his well-toned chest was threatening to explode.

Michel’s Review

When We Met is a New Adult anthology written by some of the most popular authors in this genre.  The anthology is based around four women that are roommates in college.  Each of these girls has an unique personality and individual life circumstances.  Each one has their own insecurities, their own strengths, and a lot of love to offer once they can get past the barriers holding them back.

Each one of these stories is outstanding and has a completely different plot.  Each author breathes life into their characters and makes their lives easy for the reader to embrace whole heartedly.

What I loved about this anthology is that it focused on the beginning of a relationship.  We see the mutual attraction, the sizzling hot chemistry, and the wooing factor that brings couples together.

I would highly recommend this anthology.  The stories do not have to be read in order.  Each one stands on it’s own merits. Each story is novella length and can be read in a short amount of time.

It was fun reading When We Met.  It reminded me of my younger days and the courtship between me and my husband.  These stories are the kind of memories all of us want to have.

Synopsis

Spring break is supposed to be a week of fun in the sun for three childhood friends about to graduate from college. But one of them is ready to get her game on somewhere else…

Charlie Castle is an expert archer and a fierce warrior—in her favorite video game, anyway. But college life was a program she couldn’t quite master. To land a cybertech job without a degree, she’s entering a “hackfest” over spring break—where she also hopes to meet the sweet gamer who’s been flirting with her online. Instead, she runs into the hot guy who walked away years ago, and can’t fight the desire that comes rushing back.

Jonah Best has never gotten over Charlie, whose kisses were always as deliciously creative as her coding. But now that they’re face to face again, he doesn’t know how to admit that her online admirer is really him—or how to convince her that he’s offering her a job for her incredible skills, not her sex appeal. Can Jonah cut through their communication glitches and persuade Charlie that the next level up for them should be forever?

Buy: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / ITunes

4 starCharlie should be partying with her friends on their last spring break before they graduate college. Charlie has been keeping a secret from her friends. She dropped out of college when she realized she had trouble focusing in class. She is now trying to get a spot in the HackCon to showcase her abilities and land her a good job without a degree.

Charlie has to prove her hacking abilities and computer skills. When she enters the hackfest , she comes face to face with the guy that broke her heart and sent her college career to the pits. Jonah Best taught Charlie everything she knows about computers and hacking. Now she will have to go against Jonah, one of the convention facilitators. Jonah knows her secrets and knows that she can use her skills for the wrong reasons. That is the reason he left her in the first place. They have more than their past in common, they are both members of the same guild in an online role-playing game. The flirty alliance they have formed in the game proves that the chemistry still runs deep for these two.

I loved the gaming aspect of this game. It allowed Charlie and Jonah to show all of their redeeming qualities by role playing and working as a team. It opened their hearts to let the possibilities of a happy future.

The Perfect Game was a smart, witty, and fun book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Teacher and baseball coach Lucas Tanner is fascinated by Felicity’s potent mix of spirit and scientist, not to mention her delicious curves. When Felicity asks him to return the favor by teaching her how to pick up guys, he can’t refuse—but he’s not at all happy with the idea of her using a formula for flirting on anyone but him. Can he convince her that together they have the perfect chemistry?

Pre-Order: Amazon / Barnes and Noble / ITunes

4.5 starFelicity was the only one to make it to their spring break destination. Nervous about being alone on spring break with no plans, she is fretting about spring break. She meets Lucas on the plane and he gives her a winning formula for spring break.

Lucas is a nervous flyer. Felicity is an introvert and has trouble making conversations. When the two sit near each other on the plane they find a winning formula. Lucas is able to draw Felicity out of her shell. Felicity makes Lucas forget about his fear of flying. But they will also find a partnership in their upcoming vacation that will make it much more enjoyable.

Lucas is attending his brother’s wedding. He does not want to deal with his ex while attending the wedding. When he meets Felicity on the plane, he has the perfect solution to both their problems.

These two have chemistry. The compliment each other in the perfect way.

I highly recommend this novella and The Hot & Nerdy trilogy. It will not disappoint.

Even though she wrote from high school through college (mostly poetry), she’d never considered a career as an author. Writing fell by the wayside as she focused her energy on creating lesson plans and new and fabulous ways to torment her teen students. One group in particular dubbed her “The Torture Master,” a title she carried into motherhood.

After the birth of baby number two, Shannyn resigned from teaching and fell in love with reading romance novels. She read so many books so quickly that her husband teased, “If you’re going to read so many damn books, why don’t you just write one?

So she did. And she hasn’t looked back since.

Heat Of The Moment

By Robin Kaye

Synopsis

Cameron O’Leary, a 4th generation firefighter turned arson investigator, thinks he’s the luckiest man in the world—after a year of sickness in the family, everyone’s finally on the mend, and his life can go back to its even keel. But even though Cameron has moved to Boston to be there for his family, some sort of live-in nurse is still necessary, given the demands of his job.

Erin Crosby is financing her master’s thesis in social work by acting as a home health care nurse. Working for Cameron seems like the perfect gig—low key, plenty of time to work on her thesis, and the patient is lovely. She might never have lived with a man before—she’s never found anyone she cared about that much, had barely even considered it—but Cameron is easy to live with, and an easy friendship blooms between them.

But it gets harder and harder for Cameron to keep his hands off of his charming employee—and for Erin to remember that she hasn’t really moved into Cameron’s life.

Tracey’s Review

Welcoming Erin Crosby into his home is proving tougher than Cam O’Leary expected. Because, from the minute that she first showed up at his door to take care of his daughter, Janie, Cam hasn’t stopped thinking about Erin, and all the different ways that he’d like to get to know her. Unfortunately for him, none of them fit into the roles of employer and employee.

Erin hasn’t had a lot of success with men, always finding ways to make short work of relationships, because, in her experience, men never stick around anyway. Focusing on taking care of Janie is turning out to be a tricker task than she’d anticipated, because she wasn’t counting on Janie’s oh-so-sexy dad, Cam. Keeping things strictly professional just got a lot harder.

HEAT OF THE MOMENT is a sexy little novella, and enjoyable, too. The awareness between Erin and Cam fairly jumps off the page, as they navigate their growing desire for each other while doing their best to avoid it. Janie’s health is pretty much all that Cam has focused on for the past couple of years, so when Erin shows up and begins making him feel things that he hasn’t in a very long while, he’s adamant that they will keep things professional. Of course, the best laid plans, and all that…

This book gets a thumbs-up from me. The attraction between Cam and Erin is immediate, and sets the tone for the entire read. The addition of a quirky and entertaining cast of supporting characters makes the story seem more real, like this could be our own family, friends, self, we’re reading about. Robin Kaye has written an entertaining and steamy story filled with imminently likeable people, and I enjoyed every minute of it. If things happened fairly quickly, well, hey, wouldn’t it be nice if real life worked that way? I look forward to reading more by Robin, and would love to see a story featuring Cam’s brothers, Adam and Butch.

Author Bio:

Robin KayeRobin Kaye was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge next door to her Sicilian grandparents. Living with an extended family that’s a cross between Gilligan’s Island and The Sopranos, minus the desert isle and illegal activities, explains both her comedic timing and the cast of quirky characters in her books.

She’s lived in half a dozen states from Idaho to Florida, but the romance of Brooklyn has never left her heart. She currently resides in Maryland with her husband, three children, two dogs, and a three-legged cat with attitude.

Synopsis

On the outskirts of Sin City there’s a rough and tumble saloon where the women who are brave enough to enter can mingle with men that are equally magnetic and dangerous. And in this town, no one’s afraid to get a little dirty…

Billionaire playboy Bennett Hughes’ black sheep reputation is well-earned, but that doesn’t stop him from wanting the respect of his family—even if it means tracking down his brother’s gold-digging one-night-stand to earn it. But when Ben finds his intended target to be the opposite of what he expected, his chance at redemption ends in an accidental quickie marriage.

Despite her history, ex-showgirl Liz Palazzo believes in love at first sight, something she thought she experienced with Ben. Determined to put her party-girl reputation behind her, Liz vows to be the best wife ever—even if her husband seems set on keeping their union a marriage of convenience.

But as the sparks fly and their connection grows, Ben starts to wonder if Liz might be the one person who can make him a better man—or if the former bad girl just wants him for his money…

Includes a preview of Rough and Tumble.

Michel’s Review

ARC provided by Publishe, via NetGalley , for a fair and honest review.

Down and Dirty by Crystal Green, book two in the Rough and Tumble series was an entertaining and delightful read. The romance was sizzling hot. The story was fast paced, entertaining, and sexy.

Ben Hughes is the black sheep of his family. He wants to get in good graces with his family and earn their respect. To accomplish this he has to track down his brother’s gold digging one night stand. What he finds is more than he bargained for and is definitely not going to earn him brownie points with his family.

What happens next will delight the readers. Ben has a heart of gold that has been guarded for too long. Liz has a problem with falling in love instantly. When the real deal happens, she will be knocked for a loop. The chemistry between Liz and Ben is explosive. Is it lust or love?

I would recommend this book to readers looking for a light hearted and fun romance.

Author Bio:

crystal greenPseudonym for Chris Marie Green and Christine Cody

A long time ago, in a land far, far away (Milwaukee , WI , St. Luke’s Hospital), Chris Marie Green (also writing as Crystal Green) joined the world. While moving to Southern California, Kentucky , then back to California , she amused herself by writing poetry and short stories featuring the ultimate Alpha males–Superman and Indiana Jones. Later, after graduating with a B.A. in English from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo , Chris decided to become a professional writer.

While she wrote, Chris worked as an eighth-grade teacher, but resigned in 2002 to pursue writing full time. Her critique partners, Sheri WhiteFeather and Judy Duarte are instrumental in her endeavors. Without these talented authors, writing would be a lonely road.

Chris is pumped about her Vampire Babylon series for Ace, which is best described as “noir fantasy-mysteries” featuring a vamp hunter. The first five books, NIGHT RISING, MIDNIGHT REIGN, BREAK OF DAWN (which compose the first trilogy), plus A DROP OF RED and THE PATH OF RAZORS (the first two books in the second trilogy) have already been released. The sixth, DEEP IN THE WOODS, will be on shelves on March 2, 2010. A Vampire Babylon-related novella was released in an anthology entitled FIRST BLOOD. (Note: The Vampire Babylon series uses trilogy arcs to tell one basic story, much like the way JK Rowling used seven books that didn’t solve every plot thread book-by-book to tell Harry Potter’s story. While each individual novel focuses on a central mystery that’s solved by the end, the three books together build character and mythology arcs/mysteries until everything culminates in the third book. Each trilogy repeats this pattern.)

Chris is also writes Silhouette Special Editions (“home and hearth” tales of redemption and community) and Harlequin Blazes (steamy fantasies), and whenever she can, she travels, including backpacking trips in Europe and road trips in America . She also enjoys yoga, hiking, and way too much movie-watching.

Tina’s Review

The story opens introducing you to Tess and Rhett.
Tessa is the valedictorian of her graduation class. She’s the youngest child. She’s momma’s spoiled-rotten little pageant queen. Her boyfriend is the top high school quarterback in the nation and just received a full scholarship to Boise State. Together, they’ve been the Homecoming King & Queen every year. They’ve been each other’s firsts in many things & they plan on leaving Tennessee in the morning for Idaho.
Tess comes off originally as a narcissistic skank. Prom and pageant queen extraordinaire with fake D cup implants. How she made valedictorian is beyond me. You can’t help but be mildly disgusted by the personality traits she displays.
But then, in the blink of an eye, everything changes. Ev-er-y thing.
The quintessential jock wastes no time with his most expedient cut-and-run routine. Fast forward four-plus years later; it’s summer. Tess just graduated from nursing school and is living in Iowa with her sister and brother-in-law, Tommie and Will, until she figures things out. Her best friend, Scarlett has come with and is interning as a CPA while Tess is working at Tommie’s veterinary clinic.
An emergency trip to the dentists puts her in closer proximity with a gorgeous man than she’s been in over four years. She’s no longer that spoiled label-whore. Nowadays, she’s insecure and more reclusive. It’s here you begin to become emotionally invested in her.
Finn’s dad may be the dentist, but that does not stop his impulsive behavior. He’s not exactly what his dad envisioned. Refusing to go to college and take up one of the family owned businesses in town, he opted to work on his Granddaddy’s farm. He also dowsed the illusions of an arranged marriage ever happening, preventing the two power house families from merging.
The 20-something year old Tessa and the rest of the cast are well-written. You’ve got a wide-spectrum of character personalities that create multifaceted entertainment. The plot is decent and moves along at a good pace. There’s plenty of conflict, not all of which gets resolved. Minor plot points are predictable, but nothing so telling that it ruins the story.
** WARNING: **
This novella leaves off unfinished and with a sizable cliffhanger.
