Michel’s Review

One In A Million by Jill Shalvis is book twelve in the Lucky Harbor Series. I have been a huge fan of this series . The romances throughout this series have been entertaining, humorous, emotional, and downright sexy. Jill Shalvis always adds the perfect combinations that make her characters come to life and grab the readers by the heart.

One In A Million is a second chance romance. Tanner is a reformed bad boy, adrenaline junkie, and former Navy Seal. He has been coasting along in life because of his past mistakes. When a teenage son shows up on his doorstep, he embraces fatherhood with a determination to become a dedicated father. He embraces this opportunity whole heartedly.

Callie has returned to Lucky Harbor and runs a wedding website. She feels like a fraud at times because she no longer wears rose colored glasses where love is concerned. She has been left at the alter and burned one too many times. When she runs into her former high school crush, Tanner, she realizes that she may want to reconsider her views. He has gotten hotter with age, seems more settled, and is making her feel desire.

As these two come together they find more in common. This is their second chance to find their happily ever after. It is their second chance to become a family. Between their passionate relationship and Tanner’s son, these two will stay very busy. Of course, the crazy old Lucille is back and meddling. Crazy Lucille is Callie’s grandma and she’s making her family her project.

So if you are a fan of Second Chance romance, One In A Million is the perfect book to curl up with. It will not disappoint.

The Lucky Harbor series has been a fantastic contribution in the small town romance genre. The series is known for it’s heartfelt, charming romances that are loaded with sizzling hot passion. I highly recommend the Lucky Harbor series.

Michel’s Review

Echoes of Scotland Street by Samantha Young is the book that readers have been waiting for in the On Dublin Street series. The readers met Cole Walker in the earlier books when he was a teenager. Cole is all grown up and stealing our hearts as man now.

Cole and Shannon McLeod met when they were fifteen. Although it was a one time meeting , Cole never forgot the firey redheaded girl. Now they are back in each others paths and both have changed drastically.

Shannon McLeod has a gift of picking the wrong men. She has lost the ability to trust her own judgment where men are concerned. She comes across as a judgmental bitch. She has put up walls to keep men ten feet away.

Cole has always been intrigued with Shannon. When she comes to work at the tattoo parlor she completely turns him off with her pissy attitude. As the two work together and get to know one another their rocky beginnings start turning into a beautiful new relationship. Shannon will have to let her guard down and learn to trust her heart. Cole will have to make sure that her heart knows that he will always be there for her.

I loved the relationship between Cole and Shannon. Their relationship was a slow build that had readers enchanted with interactions. It was heartwarming and felt authentic. Their passion for one another was the perfect combination of warm & fuzzies and red hot romance.

This book was the perfect addition to the On Dublin Street series. It lived up to all the expectations readers had for the beloved Cole Walker. I am looking forward to the next addition to this series. I highly recommend Echoes of Scotland Street and On Dublin Street series. They will not disappoint.

Review: Making Headlines by Erin Brown

Making Headlines_7When a one-night stand turns into an online photo scandal, Sophie Tucker and Luke McGraw become campus celebrities overnight for all the wrong reasons.

Sophie Tucker can’t wait to start her freshman year of college—she has a full scholarship to her dream school and her sights set on landing a coveted staff writer position on the college newspaper. But when a scandalous photo from a one night stand she barely remembers is posted on The Score List, a new tabloid-style gossip site the campus is buzzing about, Sophie realizes her freshman year isn’t going to be what she imagined. As more photos are posted, Sophie decides to use her journalistic prowess to take down the anonymous person behind the site.

Luke McGraw is that guy—the vice president of his fraternity, the online editor of the school newspaper, and the one every girl wants to date. When a photo of Sophie, the girl he hooked up with the night before classes started and can’t get out of his head, shows up on The Score List, he knows that he has to find out who is behind the site—both to avenge Sophie, and to save the reputation of his fraternity.

When Sophie and Luke realize they’re both investigating, they decide to team up. But focusing on the investigation instead of each other proves difficult, especially when neither of them are sure the other can be trusted.

In a story full of the scandal, mystery, intrigue, friendship, and cheeky, sexy romance, Making Headlines channels Veronica Mars and Greek, in the companion novel to Taking Flight.

Michel’s Review

Making Headlines by Erin Brown took me by complete surprise.  I was expecting an angsty new adult romance that was predictable.  This book was everything I was not expecting.  The characters were larger than life, smart, and entertaining.  The plot was unique.  The story flow was fast paced with the right amount of romantic scenes and the right amount of action scenes.  The action scenes are more of the intellectual type of scenes that fully engage the reader.

Sophie Tucker’s first college party turns into a disaster.  She has been photographed and labeled the as the first girl on the famous Score List.  The Score List website has gone viral.  She is famous before she finishes her first day of classes.

Sophie is a tough girl that thinks logically.  Rather than distressing about the Score List, she decides to investigate it’s origin.  Her investigative reporter instincts tell her this is more than a legendary college prank.  Together Sophie and Luke follow the trail that not only leads to the source behind the Score List.  It also leads to a committed and loving relationship.

This book is a sexy read that keeps the reader guessing.  I absolutely enjoyed this book and highly recommend it!

Unteachable

Unteachable

By Leah Raeder

2cb3f-add-to-goodreads-button

Synopsis

An edgy, sexy USA TODAY bestseller about falling for the one person you can’t have.

Maise O’Malley just turned eighteen, but she’s felt like a grown-up her entire life. The summer before senior year, she has plans: get into a great film school, convince her mom to go into rehab, and absolutely do not, under any circumstances, screw up her own future.

But life has a way of throwing her plans into free-fall.

When Maise meets Evan at a carnival one night, their chemistry is immediate, intense, and short-lived. Which is exactly how she likes it: no strings. But afterward, she can’t get Evan out of her head. He’s taught her that a hookup can be something more. It can be an unexpected connection with someone who truly understands her. Someone who sees beyond her bravado to the scared but strong girl inside.

That someone turns out to be her new film class teacher, Mr. Evan Wilke.

Maise and Evan resolve to keep their hands off each other, but the attraction is too much to bear. Together, they’re real and genuine; apart, they’re just actors playing their parts for everyone else. And their masks are slipping. People start to notice. Rumors fly. When the truth comes to light in a shocking way, they may learn they were just playing parts for each other, too.

Smart, sexy, and provocative, Unteachable is about what happens when a love story goes off-script.

Robin’s Review

Unteachable. This debut novel from author Leah Raeder features a romance resulting from a random hookup. With the name Unteachable, you can probably guess this novel is about a student and teacher, but this novel is so much more than a story about a student/teacher relationship. Unteachable is a unique story about two very lonely people.

Maise O’Malley is jaded, cynical and makes no apologies for her behavior. At eighteen years of age, she is unable to find care and acceptance from her drug-addicted mother; therefore, she searches for older men to have relations with. Maise and Evan Wilke meet while sharing the front seat of a roller coaster. They enjoy a wonderful evening at the fair, but she abandons him soon after they have relations. In the following days, Maise fondly remembers her evening with Evan and the connection that they shared. When she returns for her senior year of high school, she learns that Evan Wilke will be her film teacher.

The writing style of Unteachable is both beautiful and poetic. Leah Raeder grabbed my attention from the beginning with her writing ability. I enjoyed the rich character development and the complex storyline. Each of the secondary characters were so amazing! I found myself hoping that Evan and Maise would find happiness together because their relationship truly seemed more than that of a teacher taking advantage of a student. I loved how this couple embraced their love for one another without all of the angst normally found in novels about student/teacher relationships. In my opinion, the writing is what makes Unteachable special. I highly recommend this 4.5 star novel

Michel’s Review

Unteachable was one of those books that evoke so many emotional feelings. As I finished the book I was not sure quite what to think about it and the emotions that still remained. In other words, the writing was brilliant. When an author can evoke these kind of responses they are delivering a strong, charismatic book. I had to let go of my ingrained feelings and moral values. Step outside of myself and thoughts to grasp this book. As a mother of teenage girl, I had to let go of the “mom” feelings and not think of my daughter when I read this book.

This book is about a teenage girl and an affair with her teacher. In one hand it is mortifying. It felt like an adult creeping on a child. On the other hand it felt like a child taking advantage of an adult. The characters were brilliant and very human. Maise is an eighteen year old senior, who in so many ways has lived more life than most adults. She is also still a kid. Evan is a handsome thirty three year old teacher, who when he met Maise thought she was older than she was. He tries to be honorable but his feelings and emotions rule his heart and life.

Both are lost souls. Both have lost childhoods. Both have crappy backgrounds. Both have wisdom and ignorance. It is an emotional rollercoaster.

I still do not know how I feel about the ending of the book. But I can see both sides of the coin.

Brilliant writing! I highly recommend this book. Readers beware that you need to put your personal emotions aside to grasp the whole of this book.

Tina’s Review

It’s her 28th birthday and she spends it at The Jungle Room in Chicago with her two best friends. After meeting an insanely hot guy and seeing him duck into the back area, she can’t help but follow. Instead of finding Mr. Hottie, she witnesses the murder of Sergio, one of Mr. Felts’s employees, in one of the back rooms of the club.

Special Agent Jacob Ward, FBI, has been working with US Marshals to build a case against Frankie Felts for money laundering and drug trafficking. Every time they get close to a bust, their witness turns up dead. When the safe house is compromised, he sure there’s a leak in the department. Determined not to let this sarcastic, stubborn and feisty woman suffer the same fate, he will do whatever it takes to keep her alive.

Not halfway through the first chapter, I’d already figured that I’d like the book based on the wry humor, but as it progressed I wished that Jake would ease up on being a man-handling Neanderthal and wondered why she accepted it without slapping the ever-loving crap outta him for it. I wanted Emily to grow up and mature a little; she seemed to completely disregard the severity of her/their situation. There were plenty of witty narratives and dialogue comments to make you laugh but at times it was too much; there’s a time and place for the snark and this book was almost too-heavily loaded. The secondary characters were very well written and several are extremely enjoyable. Despite the first person POV, the story had good fluidity. The plot had many elements: fun and sass as well as action and intrigue. I enjoyed the numerous second chance scenario presented to several of the characters, it added more depth to the already multifaceted individuals. There was plenty of dimension in the plot, the climax was exciting and the resolve was well done. I can’t say that it was predictable, so I am pleased. We never did learn Emily’s real name, which is a bit strange in a way, but I guess in the long, unnecessary. Overall, a decent read that I’d probably recommend to others.

Tracey’s Review

When Cat Carson, a country star phenomenon with a Top 40 fan base leaves her big time label to relocate to a small town in Kentucky to find herself, she has no idea of how her life is about to change. Jeff Greenfield, wants nothing but to sing, to make a name for himself as a performer of traditional country songs. While he can appreciate the talent in a singer like Cat, he thinks that she’s better suited to pop radio stations than to the Grand Ole Opry. But Fate, in the form of the owner of their mutual record label, steps in, forcing them to put aside their differences and work together.

Sweet Harmony by LuAnn McLane is more than your typical opposites attracting sort of love story. Cat and Jeff are both strong characters who know what they want, at least professionally. They are both determined to make the kind of music that they want, the type that will define them as more than just one-hit wonders or Top 40 fan favorites. And that refusal to back down, to be other than they feel called to be, is what sparks the interest between the two of them as well, and draws them to each other. Their chemistry, combined with strong supporting characters like Maria, Pete, and Snake, are what make it such a fun read, along with the sense of community that comes from a small town full of people that know and love each other.

This is the seventh book in the Cricket Creek series, and while it is the first one that I’ve had the pleasure of reading, it will not be the last. I look forward to reading the previous books and to spending more time in Cricket Creek, Kentucky.

Author Bio:

luann mclaneBecoming an avid reader at a young age, McLane soon knew she wanted to be a writer. Encouragement from teachers led to creative writing classes on both the high school and college level. In the mid 1980’s she became a staff reporter and wrote human-interest stories for several local newspapers and at one point had her own award-winning column in The Kenton County Recorder. Fiction, though, was what she really longed to write. She joined an eclectic literary group called Night Writers and met romance novelist Nicole Jordan who invited her to join Romance Writers of America. With a handful of women, they founded the Ohio Valley RWA chapter that is now a huge national chapter.

Four children and a traveling husband, however, curtailed McLane’s writing career until a now-or-never mid-life crisis made her overcome her fear of computers and jump back into the crazy business of romance writing and she hasn’t looked back.

Darkness is the only thing I see. Ever since the day my life changed. The day that everything and everyone I held close to me ceased to exist. The day I lost it all and the demons of my past consumed my every waking moment.

I tried to keep others at arm’s length. Tried not to let my darkness taint them. Ruin them. Harm them. And whether I want to admit it or not, as much as I wish I could keep them locked out, they refuse to leave. Refuse to let me suffer alone.

If I hadn’t been so focused on keeping those demons from flying free, I wouldn’t have missed how one perfect angel was able to sneak her way under my skin—refusing to let go. Making me want things I don’t deserve.

She consumes me. Her beauty knows no end. The love she promises tempts me every time she’s near. But that pure heart that makes her MY Emmy is the one thing I’m convinced I’ll destroy if I ever let her close.

I think reader’s have been biting at the bits for this book in the Corps Security Series by Harper Sloan.  Locke has been a complete enigma since book one.  His stand offish behavior and deliberate avoidance has intrigued the readers.  We have seen glimpses of his softer inner self when it comes to the women in his circle being emotionally troubled.  He is a warrior where they are concerned except for one woman.  Emmy touches something deep inside and that is the last thing Locke wants.  He has repeatedly spurned her, hurt her feelings, egged her on, and desired her throughout this series.  He gives her mixed signals and keeps her emotions tangled.  After the tragedy with Cooper in the former book, Emmy is done with Corps Security and Locke.  She just can’t handle the emotional roller coaster Locke brings to the office.  Most of all she can’t handle the memories from Cooper.  It’s time to cut her losses, move on, and start another life.

She moves back home to Florida.  Home is not a pleasant place.  Her parents own the local slimy strip joint and they expect her to be their headlining princess.  They have also found a despicable prince charming for her.  Charming he is not.  He is a volatile and ruthless monster that wants her only to gain her parents club.  If she won’t give in to him willingly, he will take her by force.

Once Emmy is gone, Locke realizes that he has lost the only thing that is good in his life.  He is done with running from Emmy.  He plans to claim her for life and love her until death. He is going to Florida to get his woman.

As the rest of the story unfolds the reader’s will find out about the deep scars Locke has carried on his soul.  It will break your heart.  We will also see a man hopelessly in love and trying to do his best to make the changes Emmy needs from him.

Like all the books, the plot will have some intense action and seriously screwed up villain.  Locke will not only have to prove his worth, he will have to protect her with his life.

Locke is a classic Corps Security book.  The Corps Security Series is loaded with dynamic alpha men, smart women, sizzling romance, thrilling action, and Sway.  What’s Sway… the sparkly golden glitter that glues all these characters together.

Dishonorably discharged and sentenced to prison, Mateo did his time. Now, he participates in the underground fighting circuit and is the lead bouncer at Excess.

Once Perfect is written in a first-person (Evelyn’s) POV style.

Mateo and Evelyn had both had a less-than-ideal upbringing for different reasons & their family issues play a huge role in the development of the story. Learning to accept and understand one another’s differences is the biggest challenge.

The characters are multifaceted. The plot flows smoothly. I was a little disappointment with the lack of dimension & wished for a little more conflict or plot diversity. I really enjoyed the secondary characters & find myself wondering what will become of several of them, BUT I did not care for the continuous racial jabs between friends.

Michel’s Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this new adult romance by Cecy Robson.  I liked the originality of the characters backgrounds and family.  Both of the characters had less than stellar family lives and upbringings.  Although their experiences are on opposite sides of the spectrum.  But opposites attract , Mateo and Evelyn prove this in sexy romance.

The chemistry between Mateo and Evelyn is sizzling.  Their passion is contagious.

I thoroughly enjoyed Once Perfect and would recommend it to other readers.  I am looking for some of the secondary characters to have their own book.

Carolina Blues

Carolina Blues

The Dare Island Series-Book 4

By Virginia Kantra

Synopsis:

Jack Rossi is Dare Island’s new police chief. The laid-back North Carolina community is just what he needs to recover from a rocky marriage and a big-city police department. He’s learned his lesson: no more high-profile women or high-pressure jobs. The last thing he wants is an unconventional alt girl rocking his world.

Grad student Lauren Patterson made headlines when she kept a bank robbery from going bad. She’s fled to Dare Island to clear her head and focus on writing her story. However, sexy Jack Rossi is a distraction that’s too hot to ignore, and it’s igniting an affair too combustible to resist—or quit.

Tracey’s Review

Jack Rossi, Philadelphia born and bred, is a cop and military veteran. Reeling from the ultimate betrayal, Jack has relocated to Dare Island, NC, trading a high profile professional life in his hometown for one where his duties revolve more around making sure that vacationers abide by traffic laws and finding out what is making the noise under Dora Abrams’ house. Lauren Patterson is a grad student and bestselling author. She’s come to Dare Island to try and find the inspiration to write the follow-up to her bestselling book Hostage Girl, and to escape the pressure of living a life under the magnifying glass of the public eye. And, while these two people have, at first glance, very little in common, it isn’t long before they find that they may be just exactly what the other needs.

I really enjoyed this book. I have to admit that I had no real idea of what to expect beforehand, having never read any of the previous books in the Dare Island series. What a pleasure to learn that Virginia Kantra writes such a great story, one that truly engaged me from the first page. The setting, the characters, the relationships, all of these things together made Carolina Blues a winner for me. Jack is jaded and just a little bitter, but not so closed off that he can’t recognize that Lauren’s openness and free spirit make him feel things that he thought he’d never feel again. And Lauren, although she talks a good game, is in need of some of the therapeutic wisdom that she so freely dispenses, and Jack is able to meet that need in every possible way.

I am a big fan of books that are not only sexy, but that bring a fresh take on things, and tell a story that makes me want to be a part of it. The community of Dare Island, and all its residents and their stories, make Carolina Blue, and the rest of this series, one that I would not only read, but would absolutely recommend.
