Synopsis

He told me to ‘settle, girl.’
He asked if ‘something was wrong with me?’
He said I was an ‘easy target.’
That was within minutes when I first met Caden Banks.
I labeled him an *sshole, but he was more than that. Arrogant. Smug. Alpha.

He was also to-die-for gorgeous, and my stepbrother’s fraternity brother.

Okay, yes I was a little naive, a tad bit socially awkward, and the smallest amount of stalker-ish, but if Caden Banks thought he could tell me what to do, he had another thing coming.

I came to college with daydreams about being with my stepbrother, but what would happen if I fell for the anti-stepbrother instead?

Excerpt

He wasn’t looking at me any more. I wasn’t even sure he was really in the room.

I needed to leave this alone. He had given me the clues—looking away, his jaw clenching, pain like I’d never heard from him sounding loud and clear. My instincts were telling me to shut up, but I couldn’t. I had this burning need to know more about Caden. I needed to get in there, past his walls, and I wanted to understand him.

I wanted to help him.

Caden was hurting, and I wanted to take that away.

“What happened?”

Caden turned his gaze to me now, and I felt branded by the pain I saw. His eyes were stricken. “Does it matter?”

“No.” My breath caught and held in my chest. I wanted to go to him, but I also wanted to slink away. I was stirring up his pain, but I had to know. “What happened, Caden?”

“Why do you have to know?”

“Because it’s hurting you.”

I made a decision, though I had no idea what the ramifications were going to be. I stood, my legs going numb and my stomach clenching, and I moved to his side. He leaned back, his head falling to the couch, and he watched me.

The need to ease some of his hurt outweighed the fear of what would happen next. Swallowing tightly, I stepped over to straddle him and sat down.

“What are you doing?”

He asked that softly, still holding his beer. I took it from his hands and put it on the stand next to the couch. Then I just sat there. He had to do the rest. I’d already made the first move.

I glanced down at his hands, feeling like an idiot. “What happened?”

“Why are you pushing this?”

I looked back up to find confusion warring with need in his eyes. He wasn’t pushing me away, so I sank further into his lap.

“You haven’t told anyone else about this.” It wasn’t really a question, but I saw the confirmation in his eyes. My chest tightened, thinking about whatever secret he held. “Please tell me.”

“No.” He shifted forward, and I braced myself, expecting him to push me away. He didn’t. His hands grasped the backs of my legs and lifted me so I was more fully on his lap.

I could feel him between my legs, and my breasts almost pressed against his chest. I waited. I wanted to see what else he’d say

“But not because I don’t want you to know,” he added. “Because it’s not my secret to tell.”

I nodded, my stomach doing somersaults now. “That makes sense. I can respect that.”

And there we were. His hands cupped my ass, and the pain in his gaze became something darker, something I felt too, something that began to turn off all rational thought.

“What are we doing here?” he questioned, his voice like a caress in itself.

I leaned forward, my gaze lingering on his lips. “I didn’t really think it through.”

“And now?”

“Still not thinking it through.”

“You’re okay with that?”

In that moment, the truth exploded in me. I wanted him. I wanted this—but it was more. I needed this.

I didn’t answer.

I closed the distance between us.

Summer was looking forward to her first year at North River University.  Not only was it the beginning of her higher education , she was finally going to be with the guy she loved, her stepbrother Kevin Matthews.

Her first day at NRU did not go as expected.  Her first year at NRU was nothing like the plan she had mapped out.  Her higher education was more than academics.  It was a learning experience about “real” life.

All freshman are required to take core classes before beginning their field of study.  One of those classes is Statistics.  Statistics can be a difficult class on it’s own merit but add the statistics of life into the mix and it becomes downright brutal.  Summer began with this problem… What are the chances of Summer surviving freshman year?  Can you figure out this problem ?

The Answer: Read The Book

I could not put this book down.  The twist and turns, the dynamic characters, and college drama kept me glued to the pages.  This book was not only a book with a romance, it was a book about life.  I loved it and would highly recommend this book!

tijan bio I didn’t begin writing until after undergraduate college. There’d been storylines and characters in my head all my life, but it came to a boiling point one day and I HAD to get them out of me. So the computer was booted up and I FINALLY felt it click. Writing is what I needed to do. After that, I had to teach myself how to write. I can’t blame my teachers for not teaching me all those years in school. It was my fault. I was one of the students that was wishing I was anywhere but at school! So after that day, it took me lots of work until I was able to put together something that resembled a novel. I’m hoping I got it right since someone must be reading this profile! And I hope you keep enjoying my future stories.

Michel’s Review

When I first began reading The Pre-Season, I thought I was reading an erotic novella.  After I finished this short story, I realized it was the first step in Josie Savage’s journey to becoming an independent woman.   A vacation affair with an older hot Navy Seal makes her realize how important her upcoming college career is.

Josie and Elijah are perfect together in and out of bed.  Their red hot affair is going to leave them both with steamy memories and fantasy material.  Their lives are on two very different paths.  Josie is heading off to college on the east coast at Montgomery University.  Elijah is a Navy Seal.  He’s bound to his duty and serves with honor.

What started out as a vacation with her superstar NFL quarterback father begins to change the dynamics in the father/ daughter relationship.  Their life together has been a very rocky road.  From denial to neglect, Josie’s father has always been out for himself.  He craves the lime light, fast women, and hero worship.  Josie just wants a father that loves her for who she is.

The relationship begins to change as the time slips away in vacation paradise.  Elijah and Josie’s father are both going to have to let her go.  Josie has to find the courage to leave both these dynamic men behind.

Once I got into The Backup, the first full length novel in the series, I realized how much this short story added depth to the woman Josie has become.

Michel’s Review

Josie Savage’s story starts right where it left off in The Pre-Season.

Her arrival at Montgomery University is anything but quiet.  Once again her father is stealing the limelight as she moves in.  She wants her peers to see her as an individual rather than Joey Savage’s daughter.  It doesn’t help that he bribes her roommates with new computers and threatens the guys outside her Campus Home.

Josie slowly begins to settle in.  She has bonded with her roommates and it looks like freshman year is off to a great start.  At her first college party she catches the attention of both quarterbacks, the starter- Mark Bishop and the backup -Runner Rarity. One is completely available and the biggest manwhore on campus, the other is taken by the meanest woman on campus.  Both are super hot, but one makes her heart race.  The one that is unavailable.  One is a naturally talented athlete that doesn’t need football to succeed in the future and the other is an incredibly talented, hungry player waiting to take the field and make his future.

What starts out as friendship with both of these incredible guys turns into a love triangle that tests her friendships with her roommates, her reputation, and makes her a target for the meanest woman on campus.

One will steal her heart and become the most important man in her life.  The other will become the best friend and strongest ally she has in school.

Fate will step in and prove which player commands the field.  Fate will also test his commitment to the game.  Josie will have find the strength to stay by his side and believe that this is not her father all over again.

I really enjoyed this book.  It was a great introduction to a colorful, dynamic cast of characters that will play a huge role in this series.  It showcased exactly how college is in the freshman year, as well as the importance of college sports.  It also showcased family dynamics and how those relationships can mold our lives.

Humiliated, Montana is moving on when Mark admits to himself and to Montana that he has feelings for her. Just as it seems Montana will end up with the hottest guy on the team, a brutal on-field injury threatens to end Montana and Mark’s relationship before it can even begin.

4StarPlaid

Michel’s Review

Montana Tierney’s freshman year is quite different from the year she expected.  Rather than going to Notre Dame and spending her freshman year with her boyfriend, she’s going to a small university on the east coast.  Her father took the job as head football coach.  The tuition is free and her family is close by.  She’s left the midwest and her friends behind.  Being the youngest child in the family, her siblings are pursuing their own careers and lives.  She’s stuck in a world that revolves around football.  Her roommates are quite different from her, one is outgoing ,super friendly, and tied to the football team through her boyfriend. The other is withdrawn, moody, and anti social on a good day.  She’s in the same Campus Home that the football team resides in as well.  She can’t escape her life. After her long distance boyfriend breaks up with her, she is determined to try to fit in and pave her own path.

Mark Bishop is finishing out his senior year quite differently.  Rather than being the starting quarterback, the new coach has moved him to playing tight end.  He’s not overly sure about the position but at least he’s starting.  His natural athletic ability and love for the game is all that matters.  After his senior year he will be done with football.  He will take his place in his family’s wealthy world.

He befriends the coach’s daughter and it leads his senior year down a new path.  The friendship is tested by the sexual tension that lies beneath the surface.  She is also forbidden territory.

Montana is testing her new independence and isn’t making the best decisions.  Rather than trying to find a nice guy to hang out with, she’s flirting with the wrong kind of guys.  She’s attracted to Mark Bishop and knows he’s off limits.  She can’t keep herself away from the sexy football player.

Montana’s mistakes and relationship with Mark turn into something much bigger than either anticipated.  Some of her mistakes could endanger her father’s position as coach and hurt the football program.  When she finally makes the right choice, fate steps in and changes the path once again.

Mark and Montana are going to be tested in every way.  Both are going to struggle to find what is more important, football or love.  When it comes down to it, there isn’t really a choice.

Once again I was glued to the pages waiting to see how the Montgomery coeds survived another year at Montgomery University.  All of the dynamic characters have captured my heart.  Football isn’t the only thing happening on campus.  Love is in the air and ready to score.

Synopsis

Maddy Cassidy has hit her stride at Montgomery University. She has great friends, stellar grades, and sees no bumps on the road to a drama-free junior year. Classes haven’t even started when sparks fly between her and Elijah Hart, a moody Navy SEAL who’s landed in academia after a devastating battlefield experience. He’s not planning on falling for anyone until Maddy’s looks and brains start to get under his skin. Will someone as beautiful as she is be able to look past his life-changing injury? And will Elijah’s passion for Maddy be able to protect her from an unexpected danger?
**Contains plot-driven descriptive consensual sex**

5StarPlaid

Michel’s Review

Maddy Cassidy could care less about football.  She is there for the academics, a degree in  physics.  Her social life doesn’t revolve around the football team like her roommate Josie Savage.  She’s really not interested in dating.  She just wants to complete her junior year with stellar grades.

Junior year is starting out quite differently than expected.  One of her former roommates has moved on to become an exchange student in London.  Their new roommate Nella, an exchange student from London, is annoying. To top it off, her first encounter with one of the other students at the swimming pool has left her seething.  Not a good start.

Elijah Hart is at Montgomery University, as a guest professor, after he was severely injured. His career as a Navy Seal has ended quite differently than he thought it would.  He’s grateful he’s alive after losing his leg.  Fate has stepped in and landed him at the same university as Josie Savage.  Their torrid vacation affair turned into a close friendship.

He was shocked when the sexy coed he insulted at the pool is none other than one of Josie’s roommate.  He finds Maddy intriguing.  He wants to get to know her better.  He didn’t count on the complications that come from Maddy and Josie’s history.  He’s willing to do anything to get Maddy in his bed and in his life.

Life at Montgomery University is anything but boring.  Maddy has become this season’s poster girl for the football team.  One the players is head over heels in love with her.  She’s not attracted to him, she’s attracted to the new sexy, egotistical professor.

As Elijah and Maddy’s relationship heats up, so does her notoriety.  She is  trying to dissuade a volatile football player attentions, repair her friendship with Josie, learn to tolerate Nella, and keep her grades up.  She’s under pressure.

The pressure escalates as her relationship with Elijah becomes more solid.  What neither of them anticipated was a very dangerous stalker determined to have Maddy for himself.

It’s a life or death situation.  Elijah may be a former Navy Seal but it may not be enough to save Maddy.

I could not put this book down.  This book turned into a pure romantic suspense novel that had me on the edge of my seat with my heart racing a mile a minute.  Kathryn Renard found her niche writing this book.  It was fantastic. I am looking forward to more from this dynamic author. Her writing talent is blossoming.

With this in mind, she started writing. Her modern heroines and swoon-worthy heroes have flaws, but they also have a lot of passion. They may kiss the wrong guy, or sleep with the wrong girl, but her couples are worth rooting for.

Kathryn enjoys books with great plots and great characters, but also great sex scenes. She includes these elements in her books. Her characters do not tend to close the bedroom door on the reader.

Michel’s Review

We have all read books about the underworlds of organized crime. Whether it is the Italian Mafia, the Russian Mafia, or street organizations, the one thing they all have in common is criminal intent and violence. They are the rulers of the underworld. They are the parasites of humanity. They are ruthless, heartless, and without conscience. They are in it for the power and the money. The ruling sanctions are the ultimate power.

The Scarred Souls series dives into the world of the Russian and Eastern European organized crime. There is a power struggle within the infrastructure of these organizations. The powerful families are vying for the power. They will do anything to gain the ruling power including using their children as pawns. Their children are being stolen. Their children are being sold into slavery. By taking the heirs they are leaving these powerful families weak.

It’s not only the children of the ruling elite being stolen.  The lost and forgotten orphans are also being taken to build an army for another secret powerful organization.  An organization that even the ruling factions know nothing about.  An organization that is vying to ruin and take over the established organizations. The Arzianis, known as the Night Wraiths, is an international empire, like a new stalin, vying to takeover all the Bratvas.

Ravage is the third book in the series.  I strongly recommend reading the first two books in order before tackling this book.  Tillie Cole has created a complex world in the Russian Bratva organizations.  Their organizations and violent interactions span the old world as well as their new world in the U.S.  The first two books lay most of the ground work for the Ravage story.

Valentin was taken when he was eleven.  He and his younger sister were taken in the middle of night from the Russian orphanage.  He vowed to take care of his sister and would do anything to keep her alive.  He became 194, the most ruthless and highly trained assassin in the Night Wraith army.  His mistress was on a mission of vengeance after her lover was killed by 221, Zaal Kostava, the Georgian heir.  Using his sister as collateral motivates 194 to become a killing machine he was trained and drugged to be.  He is no longer a human being.  He is a brutal and murdering monster.

As a child Zoya Kostava survived the massacre that killed her family and Georgian Bratva. She barely survived and the remaining members have kept her hidden from the world.  When she finds out her older brother Zaal not only survived but has formed an alliance with their enemies, she’s shocked.  She no longer has to stay in hiding.  She is no longer alone in the world.  She is free to meet her brother she hasn’t seen in years.

Standing outside the street, watching her brother fraternize with the enemy is heartbreaking.  She must decide if she wants to reunite with him or remain dead.  The choice is taken out of her hands when she’s taken by a monster.  A monster that will torture her, hurt her, and kill her to get to her brother.

Zoya sees something more than a monster.  She sees another victim like herself and her brother.  When the rage drugs wear off, he’s a different kind of man.  He’s not necessarily kind but he is not brutal or cruel.  The man beneath the monster is a survivor and man of honor.

Zoya and 194 fall in love in an impossible world where they are both pawns in a high stakes war.  A war that may destroy every person in the Bratva.  If they are going to die, it’s going to be on their own terms, they are going to die knowing they are loved.

Tillie Cole has raised the stakes in Scarred Souls series.  I could not put this book down.  This complex series has taken a new direction that starts a new war. The Bratva world has taken on a new enemy.  There are numbers that need to be rescued and souls to be found.  The new Bratva will die trying to save these Scarred Souls.

Author Bio:

7074846Amazon & USA Today Best Selling Author, Tillie Cole, is a Northern girl through and through. She originates from a place called Teesside on that little but awesomely sunny (okay I exaggerate) Isle called Great Britain. She was brought up surrounded by her English rose mother — a farmer’s daughter, her crazy Scottish father, a savagely sarcastic sister and a multitude of rescue animals and horses.
Being a scary blend of Scottish and English, Tillie embraces both cultures; her English heritage through her love of HP sauce and freshly made Yorkshire Puddings, and her Scottish which is mostly demonstrated by her frighteningly foul-mouthed episodes of pure rage and her much loved dirty jokes.

Having been born and raised as a Teesside Smoggie, Tillie, at age nineteen, moved forty miles north to the ‘Toon’, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, where she attended Newcastle University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts honours degree in Religious Studies. She returned two years later to complete a Post-Graduate Certificate in Teaching High School Social Studies. Tillie, regards Newcastle to be a home from home and enjoyed the Newcastle Geordie way of life for seven ‘proper mint’ and ‘lush’ years.

One summers day, after finishing reading her thousandth book on her much loved and treasured Kindle, Tillie turned to her husband and declared, “D’you know, I have a great idea for a story. I could write a book.” Several months later, after repeating the same tired line at the close of another completed story, she was scolded by her husband to shut up talking about writing a novel and “just bloody do it!” For the first time in eleven years, Tillie actually took his advice (he is still trying to get over the shock) and immediately set off on a crazy journey, delving deep into her fertile imagination.

Tillie, ever since, has written from the heart. She combines her passion for anything camp and glittery with her love of humour and dark brooding men (most often muscled and tattooed – they’re her weakness!). She also has a serious side (believe it or not!) and loves to immerse herself in the complex study of World Religions, History and Cultural Studies and creates fantasy stories that enable her to thread serious issues and topics into her writing — yep, there’s more to this girl than profanity and sparkles!

After six years of teaching high school Social Studies and following her Professional Rugby Player husband around Europe, they have finally given up their nomadic way of life and settled in Calgary, Alberta where Tillie spends most of her days (and many a late night) lost in a writing euphoria or pursuing a dazzling career as a barrel-racing, tasselled-chap wearing, Stetson-sporting cowgirl… Ye-haw!

Michel’s Review

Wow!  Sawyer Bennett has taken over the dark, erotic thriller genre.  Sugar Rush is the second novel in the dark Sugar Bowl series.  This novel wove an even more tangled web.

One of the things I have noticed in most trilogies is the second novel is more of a filler to the overall story.  There is usually very little progression in the plot.  The readers get a recap of the first novel, the backstory of the characters, and more development in the romantic relationship.  Sugar Rush had all of these characteristics but also added something more.  It added real “MEAT” to the story.  The plot progressed and changed coarse.  The intended outcome was the same, to destroy Jonathan Townsend.  The new twisted directions turned the tables and may have changed who had the upper hand.

I could not put this book down and when I finished I was flabbergasted.  I cannot predict what is going to happen next.

Sela Halstead had a mission.

Infiltrate

Murder

Even the most thought out and meticulously executed missions can go awry.  The plan was to become a Sugar Baby at the Sugar Bowl, an exclusive dating service for wealthy, powerful men.  Her goal is to get close to owner Jonathan Townsend, one of her three rapist, and execute her plan.  What she didn’t count on was Jonathan’s partner, Beckett North, at the Sugar Bowl.  She never anticipated that she would fall in love with a man connected to her enemy.  Falling in love changed her mission.  She’s ready to change the plan but before she can do so, she’s caught red handed by Beck.  That moment of truth can either make or break what comes next.  That was the cliffhanger in Sugar Daddy.  What was to follow in Sugar Rush changed the mission.  The outcome will be the same, she will destroy Jonathan Townsend.

Once Beck learned the truth about Sela’s past and the rape, he’s on board to destroy Jonathan Townsend.  He has the money, the power, and his own personal motivations to ruin Jonathan Townsend.  The most powerful motivation is his love for Sela.  At the same time he needs to protect The Sugar Bowl.  He worked too hard to create his company to let Jonathan destroy it.

Together Beck and Sela come up with a plan that will ruin Jonathan Townsend.  It’s illegal, dangerous, and expensive.  The plan is executed with complete precision and Jonathan is going down.  They underestimated their foe, he’s more corrupt and devious than they anticipated.  When he makes his final move, it changes everything.  His revelations are shocking.  There’s more at stake than Sela’s revenge and the Sugar Bowl.  It could ruin Beck completely. It could tear apart Sela’s and Beck’s future.  It could destroy everything they hold dear.

One last play once again leaves a shocking cliffhanger.

Synopsis

Sela Halstead lost her innocence in a way that no sixteen-year-old should ever have to endure. She’s spent years trying to forget that night even while wondering about the identities of the monsters who brutalized her—until a telltale tattoo flashes across Sela’s TV screen. The incriminating ink belongs to Jonathon Townsend, the millionaire founder of The Sugar Bowl, a website that matches rich older men with impressionable young women. Obsessed with revenge, Sela infiltrates Townsend’s world, only to come face-to-face with a tantalizing complication: Beckett North, his charismatic business partner.

The tech mastermind behind The Sugar Bowl, Beck always gets what he wants, in business and in bed. And yet, for a man who’s done every dirty thing imaginable, there’s something about the naïve, fresh-faced Sela that sparks his hottest fantasies. Because with her, it’s not just about sex. Beck opens up to her in ways he never has with other girls. So why does he get the feeling that she’s hiding something? In a world of pleasure and power, the shocking truth could turn them against each other—or bind them forever.

Note: Sugar Daddy ends on a cliffhanger. Sela and Beck’s story continues in Sugar Rush and Sugar Free!

Synopsis

From New York Times bestselling author, Penelope Ward, comes a sexy new STANDALONE novel.

After getting dumped, the last thing I needed was to move next door to someone who reminded me of my ex-boyfriend, Elec.

Damien was a hotter version of my ex.

The neighbor I’d dubbed “Angry Artist” also had two massive dogs that kept me up with their barking.

He wanted nothing to do with me. Or so I thought until one night I heard laughter coming through an apparent hole in my bedroom wall.

Damien had been listening to all of my phone sessions with my therapist.

The sexy artist next door now knew all of my deepest secrets and insecurities.

We got to talking.

He set me straight with tips to get over my breakup.

He became a good friend, but Damien made it clear that he couldn’t be anything more.

Problem was, I was falling hard for him anyway. And as much as he pushed me away, I knew he felt the same…because his heartbeat didn’t lie.

I thought my heart had been broken by Elec, but it was alive and beating harder than ever for Damien.

I just hoped he wouldn’t shatter it for good.

Author’s note – Neighbor Dearest is a full-length standalone novel. Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Looking tense, he placed his hands slowly into his pockets as he looked at me. “What exactly happened last night?”

“What are you talking about?”

Nice try dodging the question.

He moved in closer to me. “What am I talking about? You leaving me with a giant fucking basket of muffins and running off before I could even say anything? Ring a bell?”

“I thought you’d be alone. It caught me off guard.”

His eyes softened. “You were upset…”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“You’re a terrible liar, Chelsea. Fucking horrible at it. You don’t hide your feelings very well.”

“You think you know just about everything there is to know about me, don’t you?”

“Not everything. But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to read you. It’s one of the things I like about you, though. You’re one of the least fake people I’ve ever met.”

“Then, tell me. Why do you think I was upset?”

“Honestly? I think you’re confused about me.”

“Confused…”

“Yes. I think you’re wondering why I opted not to have dinner with you and instead ended up with a woman I’d literally just met, someone who isn’t as sweet as you and sure as fuck isn’t as pretty as you. So, you’re wondering what the hell I was thinking. Am I right?”

That’s exactly what I was thinking.

He continued, “I know we haven’t known each other for very long, but I do feel a connection with you, okay? If you’ve sensed something, you’re not imagining it.”

“Well, if I wasn’t confused before…now I definitely am.”

“I feel like I need to say this now, because I can’t stand the thought of you thinking that I somehow find you undesirable when it’s exactly the opposite.”

I crossed my arms. “Again. Not following you.”

He closed his eyes as if to try to find the right words. “It’s just that I know for sure that I can’t ever be what someone like you needs in a boyfriend, in a partner. It’s not that we wouldn’t have fun or be great together at first. I’m just not good for you in the long-term—not marriage material. And the reasons are too complex to get into, except to say that it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with me. I can’t, in good conscience, start something with a girl like you.”

“A girl like me…”

“Yes. You’re not the kind of girl a guy takes home for a quick fuck. You’re the girl he keeps.”

Right. Just like Elec did.

NEIGHBOR DEAREST TEASER NEW RD

5Star+

Michel’s Review

I’ve quickly come to realize that anything by Penelope Ward is going to be an exceptional read.  I have loved her previous books and the novels she has co authored with Vi Keeland.  The one thing that keeps drawing me back for more is her creation of unforgettable characters and a love story that is not a cookie cutter romance.  A story that dances on the edge of the rules in romance 101 with the absolute no no’s.  She boldly adds taboo elements such as cheating boyfriends, sibling (step sibling) relationships, vindictive enemies, and douchebag personalities and makes the reader clearly see there are two sides to any story.  Things are not always as they appear on the surface and matters of the heart are a different story altogether.  Dearest Neighbor is the other side of the story briefly told in Stepbrother Dearest.  It turns the tables on our “beloved” Elec from Stepbrother Dearest.  The guy readers fell hopelessly in love with doesn’t look so great from other points of view.  And that’s okay because it’s time for a new hero, Damien Hennessey to takeover and dominate our hearts.  Only a writer like Penelope Ward could deliver up a new tasty dish making us forget about the delicious appetizer that came before hand.

Chelsea is still reeling from the devastating heartbreak that Elec delivered a year ago when he broke off their engagement to reunite with his stepsister.  She thought they had the perfect relationship.  She thought he loved her.  She can’t figure out what she did wrong that made him dump her for Greta.  She just can’t seem to get over him.

The first step in the process of getting over Elec is to move.  Second step is therapy.  Third step is to start dating again.

When she meets her new neighbor, moving on is going to be a lot different than she thought.  Her new neighbor is a real douche.  He’s grouchy, antagonistic, and has the noisiest dogs in the building.  Dealing with a jerk is one thing, but losing sleep because of a dog is another.  When she confronts him about the dogs, the sparks fly.  When he overhears her therapy session and adds his two cents, well that is just rude.  When she accidentally tries to burn down the building, the last thing she expects is pizza for dinner with her neighbor and a new dating coach.  One that sets her up on an online dating site and protective measures.  She didn’t expect to find a new best friend.  She also didn’t expect to fall in love with her new best friend.  She also would of never thought she could get her heart broken worse than before.  Her previous life was nothing compared to her life with her Neighbor Dearest.

Damien is what he is.  He’s not looking for a relationship.  He values his friendship with Chelsea.  She has become the most important person in his life.  He wants her to have all the happiness she deserves.  He just can’t be the one who gives her the happily ever after.  He has a history that can’t be changed and nothing can change his future.  His head says no but his heart says yes.  His heart is broken and not just by his choices.

Chelsea and Damien have to mend their broken hearts and find their new beginning.

Penelope Ward outdid herself with Neighbor Dearest.  I loved every moment.  I also loved that she tied her three stand alone books together through her dynamic characters.  There’s still another broken heart out there, Chelsea’s sister Jade.  Jade’s man dumped her for his roommate.  Maybe Damien’s brother Ty can step up to the plate.

Tracey’s Review

…The beat anchoring our melody, strong and percussive. I’m quiet and still until it thumps inside of me. Until I hear our love. That song, that refrain that hums through my very blood and inundates my soul until every note, every phrase, every measure drowns out everything else. Our song isn’t one I’ve ever written or sun. It’s the one that plays between our souls.

Finally, finally, it’s here. After author Kennedy Ryan blew me away with the first two books in her Soul series, leaving me yearning for more of Kai and Rhyson, for a look at what happens after the happily ever after, she has brought it, and in a completely captivating, completely satisfying way.

Picking up shortly after DOWN TO MY SOUL, REFRAIN continues the story of Kai and Rhys, as they find a way to marry their personal and professional lives in a way that is perfect for them as a couple. This book is written very richly and viscerally, delivering a depth of emotion and so much feeling that I felt like I was right there in the book, watching everything play out. That Rhys and Kai are truly meant to be together, that they truly do love each other down to their souls, comes through loud and clear. I found myself completely immersed in the story, and, oh, so glad that Kennedy decided that she needed to give us this book.

This book packs as powerful a punch as the previous two, and comes complete with plenty of angst, suspense, drama, heat (oh, my word, the hotness of these two!!), and a love so deep that it consumes. I honestly could not put it down until the final page, and, while it satisfied all of my questions and made me so happy, I could keep reading about these two forever. 5+ absolutely over the moon stars for REFRAIN. As I’ve said before, this is a MUST-READ series, and I highly recommend that you add each book to your TBR and get started. And, a happy note, Grip is getting his book, too, and I cannot WAIT. Get these books, clear your calendar, and settle in, because they will consume you.

“Love at first sight, huh?”
“Not love. Not at first…But a recognition of sorts. I think my soul knew you before I did. Knew you were the one I should spend the rest of my life with. Getting to know you, becoming your friend, only convinced me of what I think my heart and my soul already knew.”
“And what’s that?”
“That you’re mine and I’m yours.”

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Joanna Wylde returns to the “wild and raw”* world of the Reapers MC with the story of Gage and Tinker…

The club comes first.

I’ve lived by those words my whole life—assumed I’d die by them, too, and I never had a problem with that. My Reaper brothers took my back and I took theirs and it was enough. Then I met her. Tinker Garrett. She’s beautiful, she’s loyal, and she works so damned hard it scares me sometimes . . . She deserves a good man—one better than me. I can’t take her yet because the club still needs me. There’s another woman, another job, another fight just ahead.

Now she’ll learn I’ve been lying to her all along. None of it’s real. Not my name, not my job, not even the clothes I wear. She thinks I’m nice. She pretends we’re just friends, that I’ve still got a soul . . . Mine’s been dead for years. Now I’m on fire for this woman, and a man can only burn for so long before he destroys everything around him.

I’m coming for you, Tinker.

Soon.

Excerpt

“I can’t believe how late it is,” Tinker said, yawning, and I realized the movie had ended. Now she stretched upward, the blanket falling to her waist as her boobs pushed forward.

God, how much should a man be expected to take?

I should’ve stayed away from her completely—that’d been the plan—but something had snapped when I’d seen her out in the courtyard. Couldn’t remember the last time I’d met a woman like Tinker. She was smart and sexy and funny, and she worked damned hard to take care of her family and business. Sure, I wanted to fuck her—you’d have to be gay not to—but I respected her, too.

“I should probably get going,” she said, offering me a smile so sweet I wanted to bite her lips. “I like to check on Dad before going to sleep, and I’ve got to be up early in the morning. I’ve got to package orders for the courier tomorrow—if they aren’t ready by two p.m., I’m screwed.”

I considered rolling over on top of her. Pushing her down into the couch cushions, shoving my leg between hers, and showing her what a real man feels like.

“Cooper?” she asked, looking confused. I blinked a couple times, forcing myself to focus on her face.

“I’m going to watch another one,” I told her, because I’m a goddamn masochist. “You sure you’re ready to head out?”

She frowned, and I could almost read her thoughts. Yes, she should leave. But she wanted me as much as I wanted her. And yeah, I realize that makes me sound like an egotistical ass, but this wasn’t my first rodeo. I saw the lust in her eyes, and the way she licked her lips and stared at my mouth. This wasn’t a one-way street, not even close.

“I guess I could stay a little longer,” she whispered. Christ, she was so sweet and soft. I wanted to bite her even more now. Suck that pouty lower lip into my mouth and shove a finger up her ass.

Break her.

You’re one sick fuck.

Why yes. Yes, I am. Thanks for noticing.

I managed to control the urge, catching her hand instead, giving it a friendly squeeze like some kind of pathetic tool. Her fingers tightened on mine, then she pulled away and snuggled back down under the blanket, raising her feet to rest on the coffee table. I grabbed the remote and clicked through the menu.

Tomorrow I’d do my job. I’d fuck Talia and spy on Marsh and look for any kind of weakness that might end this situation, the faster the better. Tonight, though . . . Tonight I’d pretend this wasn’t a waste of time.

Goddamn, but my dick hurt.

The next hour was torture.

Tinker sat next to me, all cute and classy and absolutely refusing to make any kind of eye contact. I don’t know how she felt, but to me the sexual tension hanging in the air was thick and heavy. I kept thinking about her hand in mine—small, but strong. The hand of someone who knew how to work hard. So far as I knew, Talia had never held down a job, let alone supported herself.

The couch shifted, and I glanced over to find Tinker sliding deeper into the cushions, drawing the blanket up to her chin. Our legs were maybe six inches apart. She shifted again, and then her hand bumped mine under the blanket. She jerked it back quickly, and I caught the hint of a flush on her cheeks. That was another thing I liked about her—her skin was so pale that I could see every hint of arousal.

Grabbing her hand, I pulled it over to rest on my thigh. This was a really bad idea, so I pointedly refused to think it through. Her hand tensed at first, then relaxed into my strength. My cock swelled against the fabric of my jeans, just inches from her fingers—it’d be so easy to push her hand toward it, wrap it around my painfully swollen dick, and just go to town.

Tinker’s fingers gave a quick squeeze—almost more of a spasm—and I bit back a groan.

Yeah, okay. Really, really bad idea. I should get off the couch and shut this shit down right now, because I couldn’t afford to blow things with Talia just yet. Instead I found myself leaning toward Tinker, bumping shoulders.

God.

I’d grown a pussy. No other explanation, because I couldn’t figure out why the hell else an adult man would sit holding hands under a damned blanket like a kid.

Michel’s Review

It’s hard to believe that Reaper’s Fire by Joanna Wylde is the sixth book in the Reaper’s Motorcycle Club series.  I still can’t get enough of this series.  I remember reading the first book, Reaper’s Property, over three years ago when it was first published by a smaller ebook publishing company. I was mesmerized by the biker community and their lawless life style.   I remember going to one of the first big book signings, Book Bash 2013 in Orlando, and standing in a long line to meet Joanna Wylde. At that time there wasn’t a print book available for her to sign.  Fans were getting book marks, t-shirts, and other items signed.  The one thing we all had in common was how desperate we were to meet the author that created a biker named Horse that stole our hearts.  Joanna Wylde is an author that paved the path for Biker / MC romance series.  Readers wanted a authentic bad boy that commanded the world on his terms.  The Reaper’s MC is still out in front of the pack and dominating the MC romance world.

The latest release, Reaper’s Fire is another page turner.  In many ways Reaper’s Fire runs parallel to Reaper’s Fall (book 5).  The timeline and several of the climatic events that take place in both books are from different characters perspectives and roles in these events.

Gage and Painter were sent to Hallies Falls by their club, Reaper’s MC, to determine what was going on with the Nighthawks MC, one of their alliances in their territory.  The Nighthawks have been neglecting their duties to the Reaper’s.  They are stealing money, skimming product, and taking on too many new recruits.  They are building an army to take over the territory.  Pic, the Reaper’s president, has sent Gage and Painter undercover to find out what’s going on.  Gage is ordered to go undercover and infiltrate the Nighthawks MC.  He has to create a new identity that doesn’t tie him to the Reaper’s.

Gage becomes Cooper, a recently divorced trucker laying low until all the papers are signed.  He takes on a job as a handyman in exchange for rent.  The owner of the apartments, Tinker, is one of the sexiest women he has met.  He has to put his own desires aside, he is on the job.  The easiest way to infiltrate the Nighthawks is through their president’s pyscho sister, Talia Jackson.

Tinker moved back to Hallies Falls after a tragic event that led to her separation from her husband.  She needs to take care of her father who suffers from dementia. He is getting worse since her mother passed away.  She is struggling to keep her mother’s gift store open, her own candy business thriving, take care of the apartments, and handle the care of her father.  Her life is beyond stressed.  When she hires the sexy newcomer in town as a handyman, she is in for a whole new kind of stress.  He’s taken and his girlfriend is downright scary.

While Gage is trying to keep Talia under control and get a handle on what’s going on inside the Nighthawks clubhouse, he’s also battling his attraction to Tinker.  This job can’t be over soon enough.  He’s going to claim Tinker as his own.

Things are much worse than Gage or the Reaper’s anticipated.  Cleaning up the Nighthawks is going to take more than shutting them down.  Somebody will have to stay behind to control the chaos.  Gage is willing to stay because he wants Tinker.

Tinker and Gage had to work for their relationship.  There were a ton of obstacles in their way.  Both are mature adults that have been around the block.  They understand the best things in life are the hardest to acquire .  It takes two to make this work. First they have to handle the chaos in their lives.

So many things happened in this book that tied this series together.  It was intense, sexy, and emotional.  The characters were larger than life and made a great impact on the Reaper’s series.  The one thing I loved most was that Gage was a lot like Horse.  He was a complete alpha male claiming his woman on his own terms.

I can’t wait to see what comes next for the Reaper’s MC.  Joanna Wylde has created a legacy in the Biker Romance world.  To this day I would still spend hours standing in a long line to meet Joanna Wylde and get my Reaper’s MC books signed.

When a bestselling debut novel from mysterious author J. Colby becomes the literary event of the year, Emiline reads it reluctantly. As an adjunct writing instructor at UC San Diego with her own stalled literary career and a bumpy long-term relationship, Emiline isn’t thrilled to celebrate the accomplishments of a young and gifted writer.

Yet from the very first page, Emiline is entranced by the story of Emerson and Jackson, two childhood best friends who fall in love and dream of a better life beyond the long dirt road that winds through their impoverished town in rural Ohio.

That’s because the novel is patterned on Emiline’s own dark and desperate childhood, which means that “J. Colby” must be Jase: the best friend and first love she hasn’t seen in over a decade. Far from being flattered that he wrote the novel from her perspective, Emiline is furious that he co-opted her painful past and took some dramatic creative liberties with the ending.

The only way she can put her mind at ease is to find and confront “J. Colby,” but is she prepared to learn the truth behind the fiction?

 Excerpt

During the winter we pretended our way through the classics, read every popular kid’s book and by spring of our sixth grade year, the spring of all the rain, we were ready to be outside and explore again. There was a creek about half a mile back from our houses, past the tree line. Because of all the rain that year, it had become more of a river with the strongest currents right behind where we lived. Every adult warned us to be careful, even my dead-beat dad would say, “You better use that big brain of yours and stay out of the creek. You want to go swimming, you can go to the pool in town.”

Funny he would say that because the community pool was a seven-mile bike ride and it cost three dollars to get in. There was no way I was going unless Leila, Jax’s mom gave us a ride and even then, I would have to borrow the money to get in. Frankly, going to the town pool was a pipe dream. It became a myth to us, a fantasy like Disneyland or Europe. Jax and I would try to imagine what it was like to go there.

“I bet they sell popsicles and popcorn and they probably have clowns too,” I said.

It was a warm day; we had made a picnic in the weeds. I laid out my Toy Story sleeping bag I’d had from when I was a kid. Jax brought a jar of applesauce and I brought Fun Dip that my dad had 53148-swear-life-graphics-4abought me at the 7-11. We mixed the fun dip into the jar and took turns eating spoonfuls.

“Community pools don’t have clowns, genius.”

“How do you know?” I said.

“Because I just do.”

“I bet there’s a high dive, like fifty feet in the air.”

“Do you know how high fifty feet is? You would die hitting the water. The impact would kill you.”

“You’re such a know-it-all, Jackson. Why can’t you let a girl dream? We’re never going to that pool because no one will ever take us, plus, it costs money, and last time I checked you weren’t making any.”

He lay back on the blanket and propped his hands behind his head and closed his eyes. “I’m not a know-it-all, I just have cable. And as soon as I turn sixteen, I’m getting a job. I’ll pay for us to go to the pool. You’ll see, it’s just a big hole with water in it.”

I never really stared at him until that day. His eyes were closed so I took the time to inspect every inch of him. I was so curious about his body. My own body was changing and I was terrified of it. Jax was getting taller. He was going to be tall like his father, but he looked more like his mother in coloring and features. Jax’s mom was French, so they had this creamy skin that looked sun-kissed year around and his brown hair and brown eyes had streams of gold running throughout it. He was letting his hair grow longer because he’d been watching some show on TV that took place in California. He said everyone in California had long hair.

I was trying to grow my own unruly, brown locks out. I don’t know why, I always had it in a braid. Maybe because I thought I would go to California with Jax one day. We both yearned for more than weeds and corn. All the books gave us those silly ideas and filled our heads with things that might never be.

I lay down beside him and stared directly into the sun. He turned on his side and propped his head on his elbow.

“You’ll go blind doing that,” he said in a low voice.

“Leave me alone.”

“Why are you in such a bad mood? You PMSing?”

“What do you know about it?”

“A lot.”

“I doubt that and even if I were, it’s beyond rude to talk to me about it.” I hadn’t started my period yet but I wasn’t going to tell him that.

Robin’s Review

Renee Carlino swept me away to a different time and place in the pages of her newest novel titled Swear on this Life. As I began reading, I found myself on a dirt road in rural Ohio. In the front yard of a ramshackle home located at the end of a dirt road. In a dilapidated shack found just beyond the tree line. From the moment I started reading, I was captivated by this story about best friends Emerson and Jackson – two poor, lonely and neglected children who only had each other to rely upon.

It didn’t take long for me to realize Swear on this Life would be special. First of all, this novel is an unusual blend of the young adult, new adult, and coming of age genres. Swear on this Life is also a second-chance romance, but what I love most about this story is that it’s about best friends who fall in love with each other! I’m very fond of friends-to-lovers romances, and from the beginning, I adored this novel!

Emiline is an aspiring author who has a daytime job as an adjunct creative writing professor at the University of California San Diego. She’s been dating Trevor since her senior year at Berkeley, although she feels her relationship with Trevor is not going anywhere. Our story really gets underway when Emiline’s roommate Cara begs her to read a bestselling novel titled All the Roads Between by debut author J. Colby.

As she begins reading Cara’s recommendation, Emiline realizes the story is familiar. From the first sentences, it’s apparent All the Roads Between is about Emiline and her childhood! She’s the female lead, Emerson, which means the novel has been written by her first love – Jason Colbertson, who is Jackson – someone she hasn’t seen or heard from in years!

Swear on this Life is essentially two stories written into one. With this writing technique, we are able to read about Emiline’s current life, while simultaneously reading about what took place during her childhood and teen years. We begin to understand Emiline’s character and how her life has been shaped. Although I have seen other authors use this writing technique, Renee Carlino was very clever with how she penned this novel. Swear on this Life has a savvy twist!

It’s been said that teenagers feel everything more acutely. Renee Carlino perfectly captured the intense emotions of two poor, neglected teenagers who are lovesick, who are desperately trying to stay together! I really connected with these characters. I fell in love with Emerson and Jackson, fell in love with their story! I felt their joy, pain and uncertainty as they supported each other through the abuse and neglect. All the Roads Between is a fascinating story all by itself!

And, of course, there is Emiline. I struggled with her character early in the story, but Emiline showed real growth over the course of the story. She faced down her demons and a past that she has ardently avoided. I couldn’t help but root for her to heal, find closure and get the guy! I wasn’t really sure what to think of Jason at first, but I think it’s because I was reading from Emiline’s point of view. She wasn’t sure what to think of Jason after he wrote down the story of her childhood and teenage years in the pages of a bestselling novel. But my love for Jason came as Emiline’s love for Jason became apparent.

In the end, Swear on this Life is not a story about four people, and it’s not just two separate novels. It’s one story about two individuals – Jason and Emiline. This is their story, and it’s one that is extremely fulfilling! Swear on this Life is a 2016 favorite of mine, and I’m giving Renee Carlino 5 stars!

Michel’s Review
From the moment I opened Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino I was captivated from the beginning to end.  I became immersed in the story and became a part of Emiline’s and Jason’s lives, past and present.  I experienced their emotional journey on a very personal level.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino was written with a very unique plot delivery.  It all begins with Emiline.  She’s a struggling aspiring author teaching creative writing as an adjunct professor.  Her life is anything but perfect.  She’s involved in a long term relationship with Trevor, a former college football star, that seems to have stalled just like her writing.  She’s beginning to question her relationship, her career aspirations, and her life direction.  In her mind she knows she has made the right decisions that have her on the road to a normal, stable life.  A life that is far better than her past.  A past that she chose to put behind her, a past she chose to forget.  The past is part of what shapes and molds an individual.  Good or bad it is a part that should never be forgotten.
***
When her best friend recommends a highly acclaimed novel, All The Roads Between by J. Colby, it’s the beginning of Emiline’s journey in the story of her life.
***
From the very first sentence in All The Roads Between, Emiline is drawn into the story.  Two impoverished kids on a dirt road depending on one another to survive their destructive and destitute lives.  Jackson and Emily are clinging to one another in a world beyond their control.  Their journey from childhood to adolescence is far from the carefree and innocent life most people experience.  There are no rose colored glasses to make their lives look better.  The only thing they have that’s good in their lives is each other.  A love that is completely pure, untarnished by the circumstances of their lives.  Good things are only fleeting in their lives and the ugly world once again rears it’s ugly head.  This time it destroys the only pure thing in their lives, it destroys their love for one another.
***
As Emiline reads this book, she begins to see a parallel of her own life.  All The Roads Between is the story of her childhood.  She is Emily and Jackson is Jason.  Upon further research she finds the author J. Colby is none other than Jason Culbertson, her first love and best friend.  He has betrayed her once again and exposed her dirty secrets.  Secrets that should of stayed buried in the past.  She’s beyond angry, she’s devastated.
***
While reading the book, she discovers that J. Colby will be doing a book signing at a local book store near her.  This is her opportunity to confront Jason after all these years.  She will finally be able to exercise the demons that have haunted her.  She will finally be able to let go of Jason’s betrayal.
***
The confrontation is anything but a long awaited reunion.  It is only the beginning for both Emiline and Jason.  Emiline needs to finish the book before she can move forward.  Jason released his demons long ago, the book is his redemption.  Emily and Jackson’s story is only a part of Emiline and Jason’s story.  It is up to them on how the ending plays out.  It’s time for them to write the rest of their story.  They are long overdue for their happily ever after.
***
Renee Carlino is a brilliant writer.  Two novels merge into an epic love story that take the readers on an emotional journey.
***
Swear On This Life by Renee Carlino should be on the big screen.  It is an epic romance that will touch every soul.  It is a true love story.

The Matchmaker's Replacement Banner - Aug 9

VanDyken-TheMatchmakersReplacement-CV-FL-vC6-RGBWingman rule number two: never reveal how much you want them.

Lex hates Gabi. Gabi hates Lex. But, hey, at least the hate is mutual, right? All Lex has to do is survive the next few weeks training Gabi in all the ways of Wingmen Inc. and then he can be done with her. But now that they have to work together, the sexual tension and fighting is off the charts. He isn’t sure if he wants to strangle her or throw her against the nearest sturdy table and have his way with her.

But Gabi has a secret, something she’s keeping from not just her best friend but her nemesis too. Lines are blurred as Lex becomes less the villain she’s always painted him to be…and starts turning into something more. Gabi has always hated the way she’s been just a little bit attracted to him—no computer-science major should have that nice of a body or look that good in glasses—but “Lex Luthor” is an evil womanizer. He’s dangerous. Gabi should stay far, far away.

Then again, she’s always wanted a little danger.

Excerpt

“So,” a familiar voice said above the music. “New job?”

Damn it! “I didn’t even say your name three times!” I whined, turning around to face Lex. He was wearing a tight vintage black T-shirt with low-slung jeans on his hips and the ever-present sex-oozing smile.

“Three times?” He smiled wider. “You said my name three times out loud? Is it your new curse word? You know, like ‘Oh, Lex! Good Lex! Mighty Lex . . .’” His eyebrows drew together. “Somehow all of those sound like very familiar noises women make in my presence.”

“Die, Lex,” I said in an annoyed tone. “How about that one?”

“That’s new.” He snapped his fingers. “But it’s growing on me. Maybe it’s the way you say it, like you want me to die in your arms all Romeo and Juliet style . . .”

“Wow, ten at night and you’re already wasted.” I slapped him on the shoulder. “Take a cab.” I tried to move past him, but he grabbed my wrist and pulled me back, pressing us together. Whether it was on purpose or not I wasn’t sure, but he was warm.

And he felt . . . safe, familiar. My body was playing tricks on me; it was because I was vulnerable.

Like that night when . . .

I locked down my memories, especially that one, and threw away the key. “Lex, what do you want?”

“You,” he said in a serious tone. “Now get up on stage and take off your clothes. I paid for a show.”

I rolled my eyes. “Waitress, Lex. You’ll have to call one of the many numbers on your phone to get a free lap dance.”

“What if I pay?” His breath tickled my ear as my eyes burned with unshed tears. Normally, I wouldn’t let what he did affect me. Normally, I brushed him off, but my armor had already been stripped. Call it exhaustion or maybe just the last remnants of pride I had toppling to the floor.

But I couldn’t hold them in any longer.

One tear fell.

Then another.

I tried to wipe them, tried to jerk free from Lex’s strong arms, but he turned me so abruptly that all I managed to do was soak the front of his shirt with my tears and smear it with mascara.

“Gabs?” His voice rasped as he hugged me tighter. “Come on, we’re going.”

“No.” Panic surged through me as I tried to pull away. “You don’t understand!” I’d given the last of my paychecks to my mom so she could pay the bills at the house, leaving me completely broke for this week’s rent check. I was hoping to make enough money in tips for the rent.

Lex’s eyes crinkled at the sides as he took one look at me and the rest of the seedy bar. I knew what he saw: girls dancing on poles, guys getting drunk and shouting at the girls while they threw dollar bills onto the stage, and a scared, stupid girl clinging to him like her lifeline.

Finally, he released me. “Gabs, I’m sorry, I was joking. We always—” He licked his lips and glanced down at the filthy floor, cursing. “Where’s the money going?”

“Money?”

“New girl!” Dean, my boss, never called me by name, the idiot. “You working or flirting? If he wants time with you, he’s gotta pay.”

“Still a waitress?” Lex’s eyebrows shot up.

I held up my fingers to indicate I needed a few more seconds, but Dean was apparently in a mood and stomped over to us.

“Problem?” he asked, crossing his arms over his skinny chest. The guy was small; Lex could probably break his face blindfolded.

“Yeah,” Lex said, surprising me. “Your waitress just refused to dance with me because you guys are out of private rooms . . . so.”

Dean’s eyes narrowed. “You her boyfriend?”

“Do I look like a man who wants to commit to crazy?” Lex fired back. “But I do have this . . .” He reached into his back pocket and pulled out what looked like at least six hundred dollars in cash. “How long will that get me with your waitress?”

Dean’s eyebrows kissed his hairline as he sputtered out, “At least three hours.”

“I’ll add in another six hundred if I can have table service and a private room, no interruptions.”

“Done.” Dean snapped his fingers above his head as one of his security guards came barreling over. “Please take them to the Diamond Room, no interruptions. Stand outside the door. One waitress goes in and out to provide drinks.”

The security guard nodded.

And five minutes later I was stuck in a personal nightmare. A bottle of champagne rested on ice; two glasses were left on the table. Music pumped through the speaker system. A small stage was set up in the middle of the room, with two poles and some sort of swing that dropped down from the ceiling. I seriously didn’t even want to know what it was for.

“That will be all,” Lex said in a gruff tone. The waitress—I think her name was Holly—bobbed her head, then looked at me out of the corners of her eyes as if scared to leave me alone with the giant.

“It’s fine.” I waved her off and forced a smile.

The door closed.

“Stop pacing.” Lex grabbed a bottle of champagne. “And that ass better give you part of that money . . .”

“Huh?” I turned. Lex had his feet up on the table and was texting. TEXTING!

He glanced up. “What? Something wrong?”

“Uh . . .” I lifted my arms into the air. “You sick bastard, you just paid for private dancing! From me!”

“No I didn’t,” he said calmly. “Nobody knows what goes on in here. Take a nap for all I care, drink some champagne—or you can shock the hell out of me and cry again, but fair warning, I only had one hug in me tonight and you stole it, so . . . I’ll be reverting to the back pat.”

“Who are you?”

“Lex Luthor, philanthropist by day and rescuer of hot waitresses by night.” He smirked and held up the bottle. “Champagne?”

“Unbelievable.” I choked out a laugh. “You just paid over one grand to sit in a crappy club and drink champagne with someone you hate.”

“It’s my good deed for the decade. Just don’t tell Ian. He’ll think I’m sick or something, and the last thing I need is Mother Hen helicoptering around my inner sanctum. He’ll get pissed all over again if he finds out that I’m hacking.”

My skin felt sticky and sweaty, and my feet ached. With slow movements, I made my way over to the couch and sat, not even wanting to know how many germs were on the leather.

“So,” Lex said above the music. “Champagne? Or want me to order you something else?”

“Champagne’s good.” I swallowed and looked down at my hands. “I’m sorry I cried.”

“As you should be. Big girls don’t cry . . . they kick ass. Don’t freak me out like that again, it’s not good for my heart.”

“Finally admitting you have one?”

Lex spread his arms wide. “Clearly, otherwise you’d still be waiting tables.”

“Or dancing,” I muttered.

“Hah.” Lex laughed, actually laughed as if it was funny. “No offense, Gabs, but you’re not like those girls on stage. You can’t . . . you just can’t.”

“I can’t?” Why the hell was I getting offended? “What do you mean I can’t?”

Lex laughed harder. “Gabs, look, there’s nothing wrong with being innocent. Lots of guys dig a girl who has fields that have never been touched, watered, planted, plowed—”

I held up my hand. “I get it.”

“But those types of girls, the good girls, the ones who’ve never been . . .” He smirked. “Conquered? They don’t typically know how to use their bodies in a way that mimics sex on stage. Get it?”

“No.” I crossed my arms. “I don’t get it! Dancing is dancing! A two-year-old can do it!”

“Bad example, bad mental picture all around, Gabs, again solidifying my point. Good girls don’t dance, not like that.” When I didn’t say anything, he added, “Embrace your goodness, don’t get pissed. It’s a compliment.”

“The hell it is!”

“Damn, I love it when you swear,” Lex murmured, taking a long draw of champagne. “See, at least you do that right.”

“I can’t last in here for three hours,” I muttered, jumping to my feet and starting my pacing all over again.

“Want to play games on my cell phone?”

“Like a child!” I blurted. “That’s it! You’re treating me like I’m . . . a toddler! Like I should be thankful you just saved me from hell. Be honest: if you had a sticker and a sucker, would you give them to me if I shut my mouth the entire time?”

Lex gave me a guilty look.

“I’m a woman!”

“Well, if you were a dude, we’d be having a different conversation and you probably would have punched the guys grabbing your ass earlier . . .”

Without thinking, I grabbed my glass of champagne, chugged it, poured another, chugged that one, then with shaky hands grabbed the little remote, turned up the music, and jumped on stage.

I expected Lex to say something inappropriate or at least roll his eyes. Instead, he looked . . . panicked.

“Gabs!” he yelled above the music. “Look, I’m sorry! Just get down!!”

“Oh, I’ll get down!” I grabbed the pole with one hand and leaned back. “Just wait.”

Synopsis:

Andrew Beckwith has already devoted his life to one girl—and as far as he’s concerned, she’s all he needs. The rough-around-the-edges bad boy left his reckless ways behind six years ago when his daughter Bell was born. To the female population’s dismay, he’s unapologetically single. When Bell’s mother walked out on them years ago, he vowed never to let another woman close enough to hurt them again.

Amelia Van Ecken isn’t just another woman. She’s an independent, smart, and savvy businesswoman who doesn’t have time for sex, much less love. In the midst of a drawn-out, bitter divorce, all she wants is to bury herself in work. But when sharp-tongued Amelia and stubborn Andrew cross paths, sparks fly—and burn. Two things are obvious in an instant: they want each other, and they’re from different worlds. It’s the perfect formula for an off-the-charts one-night stand. Tracey’s Review

Andrew Beckwith and his daughter Bell are doing just fine. Deserted by the mother of his child, Andrew has more than risen to the challenge of raising a healthy happy girl, a strong, honest, loving girl, secure in the knowledge that she is loved. Andrew, however, is another story. Guarding his heart from further heartbreak means that falling in love is not anywhere on his radar. Amelia Van Ecken has seen first-hand what giving up control of her heart means, and she wants no part of it. Happy to immerse herself in her business, avec, Amelia could not be less interested in romance.

If you follow my reviews, you know that I loved, loved, loved SLIP OF THE TONGUE by author Jessica Hawkins, a book that put me through the emotional wringer and left me thinking it about it long afterwards. One of the things that I particularly liked about that book was my introduction to Sadie’s brother, Andrew, and her niece, Bell. Just a glimpse of the two of them, and I was hooked, and I was excited to see that Andrew’s book would be coming our way soon.

So, here it is, that book. THE FIRST TASTE has all of the immediately engrossing qualities of all of Jessica’s books, that hook that grabs you and does not let you go until you’ve turned the last page. Here, again, are the characters that were introduced in SLIP OF THE TONGUE: Sadie, Nathan, Amelia, Andrew, and Bell. But, make no mistake, this book is a completely different story, and Andrew owns it.

Andrew is comfortable in his life. Secure in his love for Bell, and hers for him, he’s happy with the occasional hook-up, but is not looking for anything beyond the physical. When he meets Amelia, it couldn’t be more obvious that they are completely different from each other. But, when layers begin to be peeled away, and realities revealed, they realize that they are more alike than not, and that all of the things that they’ve been doing to protect themselves are keeping them from growing.

I inhaled this book. I loved everything about it, the characters, the story, the dialogue, just everything. Andrew had me from the first scene, from the way that he interacted with Bell to his snarky sexy encounter with Amelia. He takes no crap from anyone, and is fiercely protective of those that he loves. Strong in his vulnerability, he had my heart, and is, hands-down, one of my favorite book dads ever. And, Amelia, I think that there’s a little bit of Amelia is so many women. She’s lost because she trusted, and so she’s holding her heart so very closely. At first glance, she’s not the sort of woman to give up control to anyone, any man, but, as time goes on, and her relationship with Andrew evolves, her real self begins to shine through, and she’s like a completely different person.

Sadie and Nate have a continual presence in THE FIRST TASTE, and seeing them now must be like seeing how they were before they got to the point they were at in SLIP OF THE TONGUE. They are easy with each other, a couple secure in their love for each other, and there in every way to support Andrew, Bell, and, later, Amelia. And the rest of the supporting characters bring unconditional love and support, and made this read even better.

I knew that I would like this book, because the short glimpse that I’d had of Andrew and Bell in the first book had me invested in them. I didn’t know, though, that I would love this one even just a little bit more. Where SLIP OF THE TONGUE was viscerally intense, keeping me wound up throughout, THE FIRST TASTE has a bit more softness to it, somehow. There is still plenty of angst, of oh, no, she didn’t moments, but the personalities of Andrew, Bell, and Amelia, along with the softer and more relaxed Sadie and Nate, spoke to me in a different way. This is a definite 5-star read for me, and I highly recommend both books. They are absolutely on my list of top reads for this year, and they should be on your TBR.
