Libby

I found Killian drunk and sprawled out on my lawn like some lost prince. With the face of a god and the arrogance to match, the pest won’t leave. Sexy, charming, and just a little bit dirty, he’s slowly wearing me down, making me crave more.

He could be mine if I dare to claim him. Problem is, the world thinks he’s theirs. How do you keep an idol when everyone is intent on taking him away?

Killian

As lead singer for the biggest rock band in the world, I lived a life of dreams. It all fell apart with one fateful decision. Now everything is in shambles.

Until Liberty. She’s grouchy, a recluse—and kind of cute. Scratch that. When I get my hands on her, she is scorching hot and more addictive than all the fans who’ve screamed my name.

The world is clamouring for me to get back on stage, but I’m not willing to leave her. I’ve got to find a way to coax the hermit from her shell and keep her with me. Because, with Libby, everything has changed. Everything.

Excerpt

“You know,” I say conversationally, as I kick back, “I want to fuck you right now.”

Libby jerks as if pinched and sits a little straighter, before getting a hold of herself and slouching as if she’s completely chill. Cute.

She gives me a smirk and sips her water before drawling, “And what? Mark you territory? Assert your manly dominance?”

“Yep.” I slide my gaze to hers. “But mostly I just want to fuck you all the time.”

God, I love the way her lips part and body flushes with heat. So subtle, but there all the same. It makes me hard as steel, my balls squeezing tight. I don’t look at her but pretend I’m observing the room. The lights are dimming for the movie now, the empty chairs in front of us obscuring our lower halves.

Slowly my hand falls to space between us and smooths along her hip. She delicately shivers as my fingers trace down her thigh.

“What about you,” I murmur, lightly toying with her skirt in the darkening room. “You want to fuck me, baby doll?”

“Right now, I want to kick you,” she gets out between clenched teeth. “Keep your hands to yourself. There are nosy ass people everywhere.”

“They’re all watching the movie. Not us.” Focusing on the screen, I keep my expression neutral as I ease my hand under her skirt. Her skin is smooth and warm. The movie starts in a blast of music and the familiar old logo as I trace over her knew and up her soft thigh. “And that wasn’t a ‘no.’”

She makes a cute growl in the back of her throat, but her legs part just enough to give me room to delve between them. Her inner thighs are hot and damp, and my cock twitches.

The storyline rolls along, my touch idly roams. Libby remains utterly still but I can practically feel the tension vibrating within her. When the tip of my finger skims the crease where her thigh meets her lip, her breath catches, legs parting wider.

“Have I mentioned how much I appreciated this new skirt-filled wardrobe?” I whisper, lightly drawing circles along her skin.

“Brenna’s idea.” Her hips shift just a bit, following my touch. “Right now, I’m missing my shorts.”

I smile, my eyes on the screen, my fingers drifting to the edge of her panties. “Later, you can put them on and we’ll play ‘Fuck the Farmer’s Daughter.’”

She grunts, a stifled laugh, which turns to a strangled whimper when I pluck her panties. Her voice turns breathy. “I’m trying to watch the damn movie. I’m not interested in fooling around.” She moves a tiny fraction, nudging against my finger.

In the dark, I grin, heat and lust pulling my abs tight. “I’m sorry,” I saw, not sorry at all, “But I don’t believe you. I’m gonna have to check.”

Michel’s Review

The month of June has me on a reading frenzy.  So many great releases by my favorite authors.  One of those outstanding releases is Idol by Kristen Callihan.  Who doesn’t love a tortured rock star falling in love for the first time?  The difference is Idol stands out among the rock star romances.

A sassy mouthed hermit and one of the most idolized rock stars, Killian James, collide when Killian crashes into Liberty Bell’s fence.  Not only does he take down her fence, he also pukes all over her and promptly passes out.  What can  a grouchy recluse do other than drag his butt into the shower.  Thus begins a friendship between two neighbors.

Killian James left the fast paced limelight for some much needed down time after his band fell apart.  While the band is on a break, he hightails it to a small coastal town in North Carolina.  He can hide out in the small town, lick his wounds, and try to find the answers to all his problems.  He no longer can feel the music.  When he meets Liberty Bell, he is going to discover the man he lost while chasing fame, start becoming the man he wants to be, and most of all he finds the music in his soul.

Liberty has been hiding from the world.  She didn’t intentionally do it, she just needed time to recover from the loss of her parents.  Days turned into weeks, which turned into months, and eventually turned into years.  When Killian James steps through her door, her world is going to change.  She too lost her music and with Killian’s urging she finds it again.

Together they make beautiful music.

The world wants Killian back.  The band is ready to get back together.  Killian wants Liberty to go with him.  He wants the world to hear her music.

Is the band ready for Liberty? Is the world ready for Liberty? Is Killian ready to let go of his Liberty and give her to the world?

Idol was fantastic.  The dialogue was brilliant.  The story itself was emotional on so many levels.  I loved everything about this book.  I can’t wait for the next book in the VIP series. Kristen left a teaser at the end that has me biting at the bits!

Tracey’s Review

When I really love a book and its characters, I’m left wondering, ‘Hmm, I wonder what life looks like for them down the road…’ And, I’m not going to lie, you could drop any one of Lauren Blakely’s books and/or characters into that scenario, and it would work for me. So, when I heard that Lauren was writing A WILDLY SEDUCTIVE NIGHT to give us a glimpse, an update, if you will, of life Chez Nichols, I could not have been happier.

Eight years, a marriage, one daughter, and lots and lots of sexy nights later, Clay and Julia Nichols are still one of my absolute favorite of Lauren Blakely’s couples. Although life has changed for them, it has really only gotten better. Clay is still the king of dirty talk. I mean, really, we’re talking, ‘reduce me to a puddle of goo, where did my panties go, and is anybody else bursting into flames here?’ dirty talk. And his skill is certainly not lost on his beautiful wife. Julia and Clay are perfect for each other, and a couple that I never get tired of reading about.

I love that Lauren brings the stars of her other books to visit, especially when she crosses over series, as she does here. It’s just one big wonderful Blakely world, and I couldn’t enjoy more seeing snippets of what’s going on with everyone.

It’s no surprise that A WILDLY SEDUCTIVE NIGHT is an easy 5-star read for me, because it’s like visiting old friends, and what’s better than that? Well, if it’s a visit to old friends that leaves you fanning yourself and waiting for the next chapter, even better. Thanks, Lauren, for giving us more nights with Clay and Julia. I can’t wait for more seductive nights…

Synopsis

BITTERSWEET (TRUE NORTH #1)
If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the orchard.

The last person Griffin Shipley expects to find stuck in a ditch on his Vermont country road is his ex-hookup. Five years ago they’d shared a couple of steamy nights together. But that was a lifetime ago.

At twenty-seven, Griff is now the accidental patriarch of his family farm. Even his enormous shoulders feel the strain of supporting his mother, three siblings and a dotty grandfather. He doesn’t have time for the sorority girl who’s shown up expecting to buy his harvest at half price.

Vermont was never in Audrey Kidder’s travel plans. Neither was Griff Shipley. But she needs a second chance with the restaurant conglomerate employing her. Okay—a fifth chance. And no self-righteous lumbersexual farmer will stand in her way.

They’re adversaries. They want entirely different things from life. Too bad their sexual chemistry is as hot as Audrey’s top secret enchilada sauce, and then some.

Michel’s Review

I suddenly have a craving for apples.  I think it’s time to plan a road trip to Vermont. I will  pull up the Google maps for the Shipley Farm and speed like an indie 500 racer to get there.  I will purposely slash my tires just so Griff Shipley will come to my rescue ( hopefully shirtless).  I want to meet that Farmboy!

Sarina Bowen has another fantastic book to add to her outstanding bibliography.  Bittersweet is the first book in the True North series.  It features a sexy apple farmer / award winning Vermont cider maker and a crazy adorable sority girl/hopeful chef.  Head on down to the Shipley Apple Farm and let Griff and Audrey tell you their story.  It’s guaranteed to make you laugh out loud, swoon with excitement, and get deliciously drunk on love (or off the apple cider tasting like sex).

Griff Shipley moved back to Vermont to run the Shipley Apple Farm after his father suddenly passed away three years ago.  He gave up his professional football career to take care of his family and their heritage.  He went from being an athlete to a farmer depending on mother nature.  He has no regrets.  He embraces his responsibilities with a sense of grace and determination.  Farming is hard work that never ends.  It’s a job that consumes every hour of the day, seven days a week.  It is also a job that leaves a person with a great sense of pride and dignity.

When a blast from the past comes tearing down his driveway, he knows trouble has just rolled up.  The trouble not only has flat tire but also has the sexiest legs he’s ever seen.  Trouble is his old college hook-up, Audrey Kidder.  Audrey was not known for her brains, stellar grades, or virtuous ways.  In fact she flunked out of BU, flunked out of another college, and finally had to grow up.  Now she’s a new chef hoping to get a lead kitchen position or her own restaurant.  The only problem is that trouble seems to be her middle name.  In order to keep her job with the big restaurant conglomerate she has to become the liaison between the farmers in Vermont and the company.  She has to buy their produce at reduced costs or lose her job.  It’s insulting all the way around.

Griff and Audrey are going to butt heads and bump uglies.  Their attraction and draw to one another is overwhelming.  They are headed in different directions and lead very different kinds of lives.  Somewhere in the process of negotiating, sparring, and hooking up they are going to realize their worlds aren’t colliding, the are blending together like the perfect apples in the award winning apple cider.

Sarina Bowen is a gifted storyteller.  Her characters come to life and jump off the pages.  They have very distinct personalities that make the readers fall in love with them.  Their interaction in and out of the bedroom is delightful, fun, witty, and engaging.  The wonderful thing is that is not only the leading characters story.  Sarina develops a world filled with colorful characters that not only support the main characters but also scream for a story of their own.  I can’t wait to see what comes next for those sexy Vermont men.

Michel’s Review
The Kavanagh Family is nationally known for their MMA training, gym, and fighters.  Their name is legendary in the sport.  Their reputation was golden until one blemish by Kieran Kavanagh left a black mark on their name.  He was involved in the underworld of illegal fights and was prosecuted.  It has taken the family two years to recover from that black mark and the end of Rory Kavanagh’s fighting career.  Now they have a new upcoming champion, Kane Kavanagh, Kieran’s identical twin.  Along with the intense training for the upcoming fight they are also facing Kieran’s release from prison.  The Kavanagh’s are a very tight family with a huge capacity to forgive, support, and love fiercely.  They are also compassionate of others outside their family circle.
***
Saving A Legend begins with Kieran’s release from prison.  He has been behind bars for two years and is being released early for good behavior.  The conditions of his release are steady employment, community service, and probation.  He’s grateful to be out of prison.  He’s looking forward to being with his family again.  He’s remorseful of his crime and vows to take the straight and narrow road.  He’s a changed man.  He’s ready for a second chance to make a good , honest life for himself.  First he will have to gain back the trust of his family, earn forgiveness from his brothers, and prove he’s worth the effort.
***
He’s slowly finding his place in the world. His brother Rory has reluctantly gotten him a construction job.  He’s doing his community service at a local youth center for “at risk” kids.  He’s also met a beautiful, young florist that he wants to get to know better. The only problem is that Fiona is not interested.  She refuses to accept a date with him.
***
Destiny has put them in each other’s path.  Fiona is the legal guardian for her younger autistic sister, Shea.  Kieran has unknowingly befriended Shea at the youth center.  He has a special connection with Shea and can reach her in ways others cannot.
***
When Fiona and Shea find themselves homeless, the Kavanagh family steps in and brings them into the fold.  This is the perfect opportunity for Fiona and Kieran to explore their passion and growing friendship.  It’s an opportunity for them to have more in their lives.  They are both keeping secrets.  Kieran is hiding his past.  Fiona is one step away from losing custody of Shea.  Being involved with Kieran could be the final straw that breaks her guardian rights.  Kieran has vowed not to let that happen and needs to come clean.  Fiona has to let go of her fears, her dark past, and learn to trust.  Shea is happy with the Kavanaghs.  The Kavanaghs are fighters… they fight for what is theirs.  Shea and Fiona are  now their family.
***
Saving A Legend was more than a love story.  It was a story of compassion, family strength, forgiveness, and acceptance.  Sarah Robinson did a magnificent job creating Shea’s character.  She also did not give Kieran and Fiona an easy path.  They both had very real problems that were portrayed in a very realistic way.
***
I love the Kavanagh family.  I can’t wait to see what comes next.  Their lives are legends in the making.

 Michel’s Review

In the last two years I have met Gretchen de la O at several book signings.  Each time I spoke with her she told me she was working on something very different and very dark.  She said it contained some very heavy subject matter and that it was a very difficult book to write.  She couldn’t put an exact time frame as to when the book would release because she wanted to get this story right.  She didn’t want to take the easy road with Rose’s story.  She wanted to give Rose the voice that would tell her story .

Broken Girl by Gretchen de la O is quite different from the books I usually read.  It’s a dark, gritty look inside of a truly broken person.  It’s a harsh reality with ugly truths, jagged revelations, and deep emotional scars.  This is not a fun, fluffy romance book where love fixes all.  Quite honestly I wouldn’t even consider this book a romance at all.  It’s a vivid portrayal of a young girl’s journey into a dark twisted adulthood. A lost little girl existing beneath the layers of betrayal, abuse, condemnation, and self destruction. If you are looking for light reading, this may not be the book to choose.  If you have hard limits in your reading preferences, don’t read this book.

Broken Girl contains childhood sexual abuse, violence, physical abuse, drug abuse, and self abuse.  It is vividly graphic.  It has hardcore subject matter that is quite disturbing.  Although most of the content is very dark there is also a progression to the light.  A broken individual finally finding the path to her own personal self redemption.  Take off your rose colored glasses and brace yourself.

Rose Newton never really had a chance in life.  Her childhood was horrific.  She encountered abuse on every level.  It’s only natural that her childhood would lead to a life of prostitution.  Prostitution gives her the power to control the abuse.  It’s the only source of income she can earn to survive in a very expensive world.  She’s not living in luxury, in fact she lives in poverty.  She views sex as a means to an end, no emotional or physical attachments.

She’s worked the streets since she was sixteen years old.  She has no illusions of a grand future. She doesn’t have hopes and dreams for the future.  Her life is pathetic. The few friends she has are people like her, living in the dark shadows of society.  Their friendships are conditional.  Each of them guards their inner secrets, emotional demons, and past lives.

Rose accidentally meets a handsome young man in a laundromat after he saves another prostitute from harm.  She’s intrigued that a stranger would help a person like her.  Her curiosity leads her to return to laundromat and to a reluctant friendship with Shane.  This is the first choice that will begin to take Rose in a different direction in life.  It will be the first step into her journey of self discovery. It may be her only chance at being truly loved.

As Rose’s journey begins to progress, her current life will spiral out of control.  She will start to experience real emotions and eye opening events.

Rose has to learn to forgive and love herself before she can attempt to becoming a whole person.  She has to learn that she is worthy and entitled to love just like every other person.  She has to find out who Rose is capable of becoming.

I admit this was a very hard story for me to read.  I had a very heavy feeling throughout the book.  Some parts appalled me, others broke me.  I did not find this entertaining but was fully engaged in the story.  It was the type of book that was based upon some very heavy issues and dark subject matter.  What made me give the books 5 Stars is it’s brutal honesty and realistic solutions.

Gretchen de la O wrote a very honest, brutal accounting of a broken girl’s life. It’s not a pretty story.  It’s a girl finding the glue to put herself back together. It’s a lesson of self respect and becoming whole.

Tender romantic young lovers holding each other in a close intimate embrace , view from behind the bare back of the man

OMG… this book came as a complete surprise!  It was intensely riveting!  I could not put this book down and consumed it in one sitting!  It’s deliciously dark, frighteningly dangerous, and insanely erotic. This fast paced, action packed conspiracy novel will leave you with goose bumps and chills up your spine. It will make you think twice about one night stands.  It will make you think about every breath you take.

It wasn’t Paisley Warren’s first one night stand but ended up being her last.  After meeting  Simon in a bar at her work end of the year party, a delightful hook up seemed to be the pick me up she needed in her lonely life.  She awoke the next morning a bit tired but completely rejuvenated from her sexual tryst.  She should of called in sick and stayed home in bed relishing in the previous night’s sexcapades.  Instead she made the second fatal mistake in a 24 hour period, she went to work.

Working as a lab technician at the Hamilton County Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is an interesting job.  She has seen it all until the latest John Doe crosses their doors.  His circumstances of death and condition of his corpse lead to further investigation.  Paisley discovers an unusual condition in his blood.  Just as she is re-evaluating her findings, all hell breaks loose in the lab.  Her co-workers are brutally murdered right before her eyes.  She is taken hostage and forced to show the killer the mysterious John Doe.  It is her death sentence.  Her captor is none other than Simon, the one night stand from the night before.  Now he is her executioner.  Her only bargaining tool is the findings from the lab results she ran on the mysterious John Doe.  She will do anything to stay alive and she is going to hold onto her information as long as she can.

Her captor is not the ordinary man she thought he was.  His name is not Simon.  He is a trained killer that goes by the name SIX.  He is definitely going to kill her, the only question is when.

SIX is a ruthless killer involved in conspiracy, espionage, government secrets, and contract murders.  There is nothing redeemable or good within his being.  He’s gone rogue and is on a mission to find out who is behind the assassinations of the other agents in his inner circle.  One is already dead, there has been an attempt on his life, and several of the nine killers have gone to ground.  Paisley is the only person that may have a bit of information on how these agents are being disposed of.  He will get the information and then he will kill her.

SIX is on a hunt that will take him and Lacey ( aka Paisley) from Georgia to Paris and lead them from one end of the country to the other.  He will do everything including torturing his hostage to get what he wants.  He has no conscience.  The only thing that matters is getting to the bottom of this conspiracy.

During her captivity Paisley will evolve into an entirely different person. She has to do whatever it takes to stay alive.  She hates her captor but also craves him.  He is her safety net as well as her executioner.  It is stockholm syndrome in it’s deepest form.

It’s not a happy romantic story.  It’s the story of Paisley Warren’s death.  And she will die.

K.I. Lynn wrote a powerful story.  It made Jason Bourne seem like a novice.  I was on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book.  The writing was perfectly executed with the right amount of intensity, dark humor, ruthless passion, and emotional passages. The fast paced action and the element of mystery added to the intrigue.  It was impossible to figure out what would happen next.

I highly recommend SIX by K.I. Lynn.

Synopsis

***Please note: Coast is the sequel to Kick Push and must be read in order***

One life-changing summer.
One boy.
The boy.
The boy who offered me safe touches and heart-stopping smiles – smiles he shared with his son.
We filled our days with porch-step kisses,
filled our ears with laughter,
filled our hearts with love.
Deep, soul-aching, desperate love.

But love is misleading.
It’s an invisible, fleeting moment.
Somewhere between false adoration and pure hatred comes an emotion, a vulnerable need, a single desire.
It lives within the ones who miss it, who crave it,
who know better than to expect it.
Love is relentless.
Even when that love turns to hate, turns to loathing,
turns to pain.

Love should heal you.
But it can also break you.
Believe me, I know…
Because I’m Becca Owens – a broken girl…
…And he’s Josh Warden – the boy who broke me.

COAST is NOT A STAND ALONE NOVEL

Last summer I read Kick Push by Jay McLean.  The moment I finished this phenomenal book I was dying for the conclusion to Joshua and Becca’s story.  It about killed me to wait almost a full year before Coast released.  I can honestly say that it was worth the wait and gave Joshua and Becca the happily ever after they truly deserved.  It wasn’t an easy journey filled with flowers and sunshine.  It also wasn’t a gut wrenching journey filled with hurtful angst.  It was a journey of growth, self discovery, and forgiveness.  Over a three year period Joshua, Becca, and little Tommy are going to learn the true meaning of life, love, and acceptance.  They are going to learn that no matter what happens in the incredible journey known as life, as long as they have each other they can coast.

I don’t want to say too much more because I don’t want to give away spoilers.  It took Becca three long years to find herself, to heal enough to move on in life, and accept happiness.  Joshua also had to find his place in life.  His professional career and family commitments are colliding.  He has to make choices, shuffle his schedule, and bring Becca home.  The glue that holds all of them together is Chazarae.  She gave each of them the push they needed to learn how to coast.

Jay McLean did a phenomenal job writing this story.  She touched upon every emotion and created a story that any reader can relate to.  I highly recommend these two books.

Synopsis

There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you’re good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere
beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the
greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

Seventeen. Single. Dad.
That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being
airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug…
And you become her poison.

Robin’s Review

Author Taylor Jenkins Reid writes about themes that can sometimes be difficult to digest. She examines “what if” scenarios – events which can cause a reader to contemplate how he or she might respond. At least, this is what I have noticed happens to me when I read her books. Her newest novel titled One True Loves presents a nearly impossible situation. How can you possibly choose between your two “true loves” – your husband you had long thought deceased or your fiancé whom you are excited to be starting a new life with?

Emma Blair fell in love with Jesse Lerner at the age of seventeen. Jesse was handsome and athletic, romantic and extremely thoughtful. He encouraged Emma to chase her dreams. Together, the two of them were impulsive and madly in love. Nine years after they began dating, they were married on a beach in Malibu, California. But on her first wedding anniversary, Emma loses her one true love to a helicopter accident over the Pacific Ocean. Lost in her own grief at the age of 26, Emma quits her job and moves back home to Massachusetts.

Emma’s sadness gradually evaporates into a fresh start in life, a new career, and new interests. After a few years, Emma runs into an old friend from high school. Sam Kemper is handsome, funny, and he has a world of patience with Emma. She slowly allows herself to fall in love again. At the age of 31, Emma agrees to a second chance at happiness – to marry Sam, her second true love. Two weeks after they become engaged, Emma receives a phone call from Jesse. He’s been rescued at sea, and he’s desperately been trying to come home to her for years.

One True Loves is real, it’s raw, and it’s incredibly thought-provoking. This contemporary romance/women’s fiction novel presents an impossible situation, one where our primary character is forced to choose between two men whom she desperately loves. When you read the synopsis, One True Loves sounds angsty. I’m not going to gloss over it. One True Loves IS angsty, but Taylor Jenkins Reid manages to handle this topic with logic and grace.

It’s hard for me to imagine this type of situation happening to anyone in real life, but Reid paints a realistic picture of sadness, confusion and love though all stages of this story. It was so easy for me to see how Emma could fall in love with each of these men. Reid presents this story chronologically, so the reader is able to see the natural progression of each relationship. I absolutely LOVED Emma’s relationship with Jesse. Jesse gives Emma courage to follow her dreams. He is everything Emma needs during her teens and twenties. And Sam. Sam encourages Emma to create a new life for herself. He is selfless, kind and patient with Emma as she overcomes the loss of her husband.

One of the best things about Reid’s writing is the character dialogue – the openness and honesty that takes place between her characters. I think you’ll find that the conversations in this story are interesting and entertaining, even if the subject matter might not be pleasant. One True Loves is a genuine page-turner. I couldn’t, didn’t want to, put my Kindle down!

Although there are plenty of sweet, romantic moments, One True Loves is also painful and angry and sad. It’s confusing and overwhelming for Jesse, Sam and Emma. I guess some readers will consider this story a love triangle, but that’s not because any of the characters deliberately chose to cheat on each other. It’s NOT REALLY cheating. It’s just life. I encourage readers who avoid these types of novels, to give this book a try.

One True Loves is one of my 2016 favorites. I read a lot of novels, but days after finishing, this story still impresses me! I absolutely loved the way this story was reconciled! The impeccable dialogue and character development are truly what make this story special, and that’s why I’m giving Taylor Jenkins Reid a 5-star rating for One True Loves!

Empire 0 days

empire smash cover art

I have lost everything.

My purpose

My love

My soul

Death knocks on my door, I want to answer, but every time I reach for the handle — the promise I made her brings me back.

So I breathe.

I live.

I hate.

And I allow the anger to oil beneath the surface of a perfectly indifferent facade. I am broken, I don’t want to be fixed.

But the Empire is crumbling and it’s my job to fix it.

My job to mend the pieces that were scattered over thirty years ago.

A trip to New York, only one chance to redeem a lost part of our mafia family.

The only issue is, the only way to fix it, is to do something I swore I’d never do again.

An arranged marriage.

Only this time.

I won’t fall.

Or so help me God, I will kill her myself.

My name is Sergio Abandonoto, you think you know my pain, my suffering, my anger, my hate?

You have no idea.

I am the mafia.

I am the darkness.

Blood in. No out.

The loving couple in the rain

EXCERPT

“Taxi.” I held up my hand. “It’s too cold to walk.”

“Is it?”

“For those of us who have hearts,” I said under my breath.

He paused and then burst out laughing. “Holy shit, was that a dig at me?”

I shrugged as the taxi pulled up.

“Damn, and you’re not even apologizing.”

“It was more of a passing comment under my breath…” I got into the taxi and slid across the cold, worn vinyl seat. “But true.”

Sergio slammed the door after him. “And here I thought I was making a good impression.”

“You offered to kill me if I kissed you.”

The taxi driver frowned into the rearview mirror.

“She’s kidding,” Sergio reassured him.

I refused to let him get off that easy. “You also look at me like you want to throw up.”

Mr. Taxi Driver’s nostrils flared.

“Uh.” Sergio laughed uncomfortably. “I just have a lot on my mind.”

“The wife.”

Taxi Driver’s eyes looked like they were going to bug out of his head. Yeah, this was probably the best entertainment he’d had all day.

“I don’t talk about it,” Sergio said in a drop-the-subject voice.

“Maybe you should.”

“I have enough money to afford a therapist, thank you,” he said through clenched teeth.

“Money doesn’t buy happiness,” I fired back.

Sergio released a string of pithy curses. “Did someone spike your milk this morning during show and tell?”

“Lactose intolerant.”

“Sorry. Your Kool-Aid.” His eyes narrowed. “It’s like you’re trying to piss me off.”

Bingo. I smiled. “Funny, that’s what Dante says to me all the time. Just think of all the things you get to look forward to. Isn’t that what you said you wanted?”

Sergio looked ready to strangle me. “No. I don’t believe I asked for an annoying little sister, but if that’s what you’re offering, please don’t let me stop you. Just know, I won’t hesitate to put you over my knee if you get out of hand.”

The minute the words left his mouth. I froze.

He froze.

The taxi driver stared little laser-like holes into the rearview mirror.

And Sergio leaned toward me.

I swallowed as tension swirled around us.

He gripped me by the chin and turned my head to the side, his lips brushing my ear. “It’s like you have a death wish.”

“You wouldn’t do it.”

He pulled back as both of his eyebrows shot up, and then he looked down, like something had caught his eye.

I followed the direction of his gaze and let out a little gasp as a gun dug into my stomach.

“It’s been directed at you for the last four minutes,” Sergio said through a practiced smile. “I meant what I said. Listen well. I keep my word. Kiss me, and blood will be spilled.”

“Y-you’re a crazy person!” I hissed, shoving at his chest. “And I wasn’t going to kiss you!”

“Sure you weren’t.” He put the gun away. “Good talk though, right? Oh look, the movie theater.”

To say that I scrambled out of the car like a kid running away from her kidnapper would be a gross understatement, but the minute my feet hit the pavement, I paused.

My body told me to run.

The guy had pulled a gun.

On me.

I didn’t even watch violent movies, I’d just panicked and said the first thing that popped into my head!

And I was about to go to the theater with a guy who probably showered in blood on a daily basis and by the looks of it — got off on it.

Shivering, I forced myself to take a deep breath and wrapped my jacket tighter around my body.

That was the thing about men like Sergio, or maybe just loyalty in general. He’d promised he would keep me safe, but I wondered if that promise was only extended until I was more trouble than I was worth.

I was safe, not because of what I was to him.

But because of who my dad had been to him.

I was nothing.

And yet, a part of me still yearned to be… something.

Anything really.

Pathetic.

“Change your mind?” Sergio’s smooth voice interrupted my thoughts. He was the type of man you felt even when he wasn’t speaking. His presence was impossible to ignore, kind of like his ridiculous good looks.

Weren’t mafia guys supposed to be old?

Fat?

Chain smokers who bought Cuban cigars and sat behind large desks while counting money and ordering hits on people who pissed them off?

“No.” I finally found my voice. “I was just thinking….”

“About?” His hand touched my back, ushering me forward, but not pushing, almost as if he was giving me the option of still saying no.

I increased my pace so that I couldn’t feel the warmth of his fingertips. “Popcorn.” I turned and winked, hoping it would hide the fact that my body was shaking.

Maybe I was the crazy one.

Because he was armed.

The man was armed.

And he had no qualms about pointing his weapon at me whenever I got too close.

Huh, we’d have a happy marriage.

I guess we’d never argue, since I liked living.

And, you know, breathing.

It would suck not to make my twenty-first birthday because I didn’t fold the towels just right.

And again, I froze.

Was he that neurotic? Or was it just the closeness?

“On a scale of one to ten…” I was proud of the way I kept the shaking out of my voice. Why was I so scared? Oh right, because he’d pointed a gun, no, shoved a freaking gun into my stomach and done it with a smile on his face. “How OCD are you?”

An easy laugh escaped him as he glanced around the movie theater lobby and then back at me. “What makes you think I’m OCD?”

“Things.” I gulped then forced a smile that I didn’t feel. How was I supposed to go through an entire movie knowing he was one uncomfortable conversation away from losing it? “So?”

“What can I get you?” A teen boy looked at Sergio then smiled wider when his eyes fell to me.

Immediately, Sergio wrapped a protective arm around me, basically forcing my body to curve into his warmth. “My wife and I will have two buckets of popcorn, two packs of Sour Patch Kids, and a bottled water.”

I didn’t correct him about the water.

“Wait.” Sergio held up his hand. “Sorry, Dr. Pepper mixed with Coke.”

The teen scrunched up his face then rung us up. His eyes fell to me again then back at the register, like he was trying not to look but couldn’t help it, which was comical, since I didn’t really think I was anything to look at.

When he handed Sergio back his change I could have sworn I heard a growl from my “husband.”

As it was, he jerked the candy so hard out of the kid’s hands that I was surprised he didn’t do a front flip over the counter.

“He’s a boy,” I whispered under my breath. “No need to shoot him too.”

Sergio glanced down at me, muttered a curse. “He was staring.”

“He looked about one science project away from solving world hunger via his mom’s basement… hardly the type of guy that I’d date.”

“Date?” Sergio said it so loudly the people in front of us waiting to show the attendant their tickets jumped and then turned around. “What the hell do you mean date?”

Crap. I’d messed up again.

My palms went sweaty while my face felt numb with fear. Regardless of how pretty he was to look at — I was finally fully aware of how dangerous he was to me.

To everyone around me.

Sweat trickled down my lower back as I gulped down more soda and shrugged. “I just mean, he’s not my type.”

“No shit he isn’t, because you don’t get a type anymore.”

“Right.” I licked my lower lip, pretending not to be scared, pretending to be the brave person I wasn’t was wearing on me.

By the time we made it into the theater I was dizzy.

It was too much all at once.

“So…” Sergio’s voice was in my ear. I jumped a foot. He frowned as if he couldn’t figure out why I’d be so jumpy. “Dante sits behind you, right?”

“Right.” I exhaled in relief. I forgot. It wasn’t a date. It was a challenge. He’d called me his sister, so therefore he was my brother, right? Hah. I relaxed a bit as I pointed to a seat a few rows back and quickly stole the goodies out of his hands then made my way to my own seat before he could object.

The credits started rolling.

And I found myself ducking in the chair.

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end.

As if I was being watched — because I was.

Ten minutes into the movie, I was so stressed out, I almost burst into tears. My back was to him.

Wasn’t that a big no-no? My back was to the dude with the gun.

Even though he was supposed to protect me with the gun, all bets were off now.

Sweat pooled in the palms of my hands.

The music rose as one of the actresses ran down the stairs screaming.

I couldn’t take it.

And then, a body sat down next to me.

Sergio gave me a suspicious look then put a seat between us.

I exhaled.

But it wasn’t relief.

At least I knew where he was.

And where the gun was, he was right handed, so there was that.

I finally allowed myself to relax enough to watch the movie when I saw Sergio’s right hand duck into his jacket.

I gripped the plastic arm rests, my fingers digging into the cheap sticky plastic material as he slowly pulled something out.

He turned.

And I flinched so hard that there was no mistaking what I thought he was doing.

Even though he had grabbed a black cell phone.

The damage was done.

My entire body shook as a big fat tear escaped, I tried to wipe it away but I wasn’t fast enough.

“S-sorry.” I shoved past him and ran.

But my body was too scared.

Too tired

To make it very far.

Michel’s Review

I have been a huge fan of the Eagle Elite series since the beginning.  I have devoured each book and raved about this series.  The last book left me devastated.  My heart broke for Serigio.  Rachel Van Dyken has finally given Sergio the happily ever after he desperately needs.

Empire should not be read as a stand alone novel. To fully appreciate the Empire novel, the previous book , Elude should be read first.  I would go even further by recommending the entire series.  The dynamics of this series are very complex. I feel that even the seasoned reader is still trying to keep all of the facts straight.  There should be a family tree and hierarchy table in the front of each novel. Each character, family member, and associates brings something to unique each novel.

Poor Sergio can’t catch a break.  He was forced to marry his enemy.  He fell in love and had to watch her die of cancer.  Their short time together was the best and the worst times of Sergio’s life.  He was left a broken man.  And once again his family is forcing him to marry for the good of the family.  What can he do, blood is everything. Without blood there is nothing.

Sergio may be forced to marry but this time he will not give his heart.  He will not betray Andi’s memory.  He will never love again.

Imagine being a young innocent Italian woman who works in a floral shop with her three elderly uncles.  Val is that shy girl that lives for her family and her books.  When her uncles arrange a marriage for her she is livid.  She’s only nineteen.  Hardly an old maid.  Not only do they arrange the marriage but another man changes the groom.  She then finds out that she is a mafia princess, the daughter of one the most powerful men in the families.  Now her unknown father is dead and she needs protection.  Rather than getting a prince she gets a broken enforcer that refuses to look her in the eye.

Sergio and Val have a hard road to travel.  Val doesn’t want to fill Andi’s shoes, she just wants to share a bit of the path.  Can Sergio open up?  Read the book.

The only thing I can say is Rachel did a magnificent job with this book.  I was afraid I couldn’t embrace Val because I loved Andi so much.  I fell in love with this strong hearted girl right along with Sergio.

Sergio finally has his happily ever after!

Synopsis

Opposites attract in this seductive novel from the author of Against the Cage (“Funny, steamy, scorching.”—Toni Aleo), with a chiseled MMA fighter falling for a single mom who could use a real man in her corner.

Working two jobs to support her infant daughter is harder than anything Penny Richards has ever done, but it sure beats living under the rules of her stepfather, a television preacher who demands a picture-perfect family. And if Penny hadn’t struck out on her own, she never would have met Travis Calhoun. The intensely physical heavyweight brawler has a way of drawing out her wild side. But Travis lives fast, with no responsibilities—and that just isn’t for Penny.

Most of the women in Travis’s circle wear tight clothes, high heels, and tons of makeup—not pearls or plaid headbands. But once he works past Penny’s inhibitions, Travis discovers a kindred spirit who longs to trust someone with her body, and her secrets. Still, Travis can’t help but wonder if this rich girl is just slumming it before she returns to her privileged life. Now it’s up to Penny to prove that she wants her hard-edged, hard-loving fighter just the way he is.

Michel’s Review

The Worth The Fight series by Sidney Halston is a knock out!  I have reviewed each book in this series and given each one high praise.  I was looking forward to Stacked Up, the sixth book in the series.  The wait was worth it because it is my favorite book in the series.

Travis Calhoun comes across as a carefree, playboy fighter with a Texas drawl.  All that southern cowboy charm melts the ladies hearts.  Now that he is the star of a fighter tv reality show, he’s charming the ladies of the nation.  While he loves his sudden fame and all the perks that come along with it, he still can’t seem to get Penny Richards attention.

Travis came from a poor and abusive background.  Surviving his youth included gang membership, fighting, and petty crimes that left him with a record.  When he finally landed at WTF in Florida, he found a positive direction for his life.  He found hope in the future.  He had his chance to fight for the right reasons.  He is finally getting the life he dreamed of.

Penny has several good reasons for staying away from Travis.  She’s a single mom struggling to make ends meet.  She can’t deal with Travis sudden notoriety, it could destroy her new life.  She is just trying to survive one day at a time and make a good life for her and her daughter.

Penny and Travis form a friendship that leads to Penny finally agreeing to a date.  Exposure not only outs their newfound relationship but also exposes Penny to the people she is running from.  The biggest surprise for Travis was Penny’s child.  Now he must chose Penny and her child or walking away.

Travis is about to surprise himself.  He’s going to learn the true meaning of love and family.

I absolutely loved this book.  Penny and Travis touched my heart.  Together they formed a strong relationship that defined more than love and friendship.  They became whole people.  They became a family.  Travis finally knows the true definition of parenting.

This book is my favorite because not only is it a beautiful love story, it is also a story of family values.

If you love the MMA romances of Vi Kreeland and Kendall Ryan, Sidney Halston’s Worth the Fight series will knock your socks off! In Fighting Dirty, a geek-chic cage fighter proves that appearances can be deceiving . . . and oh-so-tempting.

With his preppy clothes and horn-rimmed glasses, Enzo Silva is the last dude anyone expects to find in a mixed martial arts gym. A wealthy Brazilian banker who never had to fight for anything, Enzo’s stuck in the amateur circuit—but he burns to make the pros. Maybe that explains the heat he feels whenever he’s around Jamie Lynn Calhoun. The pint-size, magenta-haired bartender with the Texas drawl is everything he’s not . . . and everything he craves.

Tough as nails and independent to a fault, Jamie Lynn—JL to her friends—works hard to pay her bills and keep life simple. Enzo is doing his best to complicate that. Even though she likes to bust his balls, he’s got some kind of a nerdy-hot vibe that makes JL wonder if she might finally be able to let her guard down. It might do the boy some good to spend some time in her world, where blood, sweat, and victory are as sweet as the first taste of real love.
