I remember like it was yesterday, placing my hand on the bible, while holding my other hand high along with my head, turning my life over to protect my country. Only, it wasn’t yesterday, it was eight long, tortuous, agonizing years ago.
My reasons for thinking agonizing have nothing to do with the Army. I live it. I breathe it. My life is consumed by it because it’s all I’ve ever wanted.
It’s agonizing because here I stand in complete darkness as one of the first women to graduate from The Army’s Special Ranger’s School. Agony may be a harsh word to use. However, no one was more relieved than I was when the law was lifted a few years ago and women were notoriously approved to serve our country in day-to-day ground combat roles. Our nation has come a long way in allowing equal rights to women. It’s about fucking time.
For two months I trained, barely slept, and pushed my now well-defined body to the brink of exhaustion. My dream is now a reality and my right to be here is embedded into my soul.
My mental stability was pushed to the limits, physical strength tested to the point of pain so excruciating that I was ready to give up, surrender, and dare to show them weakness, but I never did. I would’ve died first.
With the help of a fellow Captain, I pushed harder, became stronger, and passed. Yet here I stand, ready and willing to throw my dream away, all for a simple quick fuck. It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever thought about doing in my life and god help me, I can’t control it, nor do I want to.

Ice by Hilary Storm and Kathy Coopmans is the first book in the Elite Forces Series. This book ended on a cliffhanger that will leave the readers wanting the next book.
I was scheduled to review this book on release day and the authors decided to release this book a week early. It gave me some extra time to think about this book and my reactions to it.
Ice is a an erotic military romance. It features Captain Jade Elliott, one of the first female special ops snipers. She’s worked hard to get where she is and shouldn’t let anything stand in the way of her career. But she didn’t count on Kaleb Maverick leading her next mission. The man is sex on a stick. A pure distraction. Is he enough to sacrifice everything she has worked so hard for?
I am a huge fan of military romance. I have read several romance books written by female military officers that give a true insight into women roles in the military. While both of these authors tried to honor these roles and the brave women that serve, I felt they sold Jade out. I was a bit offended by the position that she was put in and angry how she folded so easily.
As for the hero, Kaleb Maverick, he treated Jade like a whore even though that was not his intentions. When he tried to rectify his actions, it still came across as domineering.
The chemistry between Kaleb and Jade was sizzling hot and their interactions could be deemed as potent. I found myself disconnected to their characters. But that was not enough to make me put the book down because there was a good plot building in the story itself. The missions were engaging and how this book ended makes me want to see this story to the end.
I wish these authors would of done a bit more research on the military aspects of the book because most of it didn’t feel authentic. I wished they would of handled Jade and Kaleb’s first interactions a little differently. It turned me off and made me more critical of this book.
I am sure there are many readers that will love this erotic book. As for the die hard military romance fans, I think they are going to react the same way I did.
