For every action, there is a reaction.

Laney POV

I tiptoed into the living room to get a couple of cookies from the kitchen. I noticed that Ash had left the drapes open and it gave me a chance to study his beautiful face, younger and softer in sleep.

But he wasn’t asleep, and I froze.

He was stretched out on the couch, his bare chest almost luminous in the glow of the street lamps.

One hand rested on his chest, but the other…

The thin sheet was pushed down to his thighs and he was stroking himself. His long fingers that had massaged me so thoroughly earlier in the evening were firmly grasping his hard dick and working it up and down, his thumb sweeping over the wide head. His eyes were closed, his mouth slightly open, and his breaths were quick and shallow.

I knew I should turn around and go, leaving him alone in this very private moment, not watching like some creepy voyeur. But I couldn’t. I was mesmerized by the sight of him pleasuring himself, his hand moving faster, his firm chest rising and falling rapidly.

He muttered something in his own language, and I could tell by the tightness in his face that he was close. And God, if it wasn’t the hottest thing I’d ever seen.

Michel’s Review

Readers can always count on Jane Harvey-Berrick to deliver an original, emotional, and entertaining novel that stands out in a flooded market of romance novels.  In 2015 she took readers on an adventure with the Traveling Series that featured the life of carnies.  Now in 2016 she’s stepped off the midway and leaped into the spotlight with her new Rhythm Series, featuring professional dancers.  The added bonus to this new series is that it goes beyond a romance series and steps into the world of suspense that turns it into a dark thriller.

The very first paragraph drew me into this story and I could not put it down until I finished the last word.  I was drawn into the bright lights of the stage and experienced the dreams of stardom right along with all the dancers looking for their big break.  Rather than becoming  shining stars, their hopes and dreams were shattered the moment they stepped off the plane in Las Vegas.  They are thrust into a dark, violent, and hopeless world where the mere thought of surviving seems bigger than all their dreams put together.  They have become victims in a heinous world.  A world in which there is no return.  A world where slavery is the only means of survival.

Aljaz Novak, other wise known as Ash, has trained as a ballroom dancer all his life. Dancing is more than a passion, it is his life force. Having the opportunity to come to Las Vegas as a stage dancer is beyond his dreams.  When he steps off the plane and is thrust into his new world, it is beyond his dreams, it’s the ultimate nightmare.  He has been duped along with other European dancers.  There is no show, no theater, and no starring roles.  He’s been brought to America to become a sex slave by the Russian Brava.  The girls that were brought over with him are disappearing.  He has captured the eye of a sick monster that wants to make him his personal slave boy.  Every means of escape are impossible.  They have taken his passport, clothes, money, work visa, and phone.  His only hope is to die with dignity.

Help comes from an unexpected girl.  A girl in a wheelchair that happens to intrude on a violent, abusive rape situation.  The escape takes them to Chicago, where her family resides.

Laney has become more than a savior.  She has become his best friend.  She has the determination and hope to help him regain his life back.  She wants him to regain his self esteem, his passion for dance, and the justice he deserves.  Along the way she becomes more than a friend and savior.  She becomes his reason for living.  She has become his personal ray of sunshine.

Laney has battled her disease all her life.  When she met Ash, he treated her as a regular woman rather than a cripple.  He accepted her for who she was.  He didn’t want to fix her, he only wants to help her realize her own dreams.

Together Laney and Ash should not make sense, but together they are perfection.  And just when they think they have put the nightmare behind them, the nightmare shows up center stage.

Slave To Rhythm was an emotional story that shows that hope and redemption come in very different ways.  The thing that makes it credible is the capacity to love with the whole heart.

This book was amazing.  I could not put it down.  I can’t wait to see who’s next in the spotlight of the stage in the Rhthym Series.

Jane Harvey-Berrick should receive a standing ovation for this book.

Michel’s Review

I am a huge fan of Biker/ MC romance series.  Kim Jones is one of my go to authors.  She knows the MC world and has a gift of putting it on paper.  Her characters and their stories come to life.  Their world takes over a readers time until the last word is read.

Sinner’s Creed by Kim Jones is the first book in her new MC/Biker series, Sinner’s Creed.

Sinner’s Creed was not what I expected in a MC/Biker romance.  This book is an epic love story that goes beyond the leather and lace theme.  It’s a brutal, honest rendering of life as a one percenter in a powerful national MC.  It’s a story of man finding his humanity and heart that was lost to the cut.  It’s the story of one woman believing that love could conquer all.  And it does.

Dirk Dixon was raised in the violent, loveless world of the Sinner’s Creed MC.  He was molded and shaped from a very young age to be a soldier for the club.  The club always came first, no matter what.  It’s the only life he has known.  He hated the way his grandfather treated him and later he embraced it.  He’s become an emotionless machine that has been recruited to carry out club business and enforce club rules on a National Level.  He is a nomad.  He is Sinner’s Creeds top enforcer.

When his world and Sayer Samson’s world cross paths throughout several years, it seems destiny has made her choice.  When Sayer asks Dirk to take her away from her world, he never questions the request.  It’s something he must do.

Their destinies were intertwined.  Their souls were meant for one another.  Sayer is the sunshine in Dirk’s lonely, loveless life.  Dirk is the strength and protector she never had in her life.  Together they find a love beyond definition.  Sayer is Dirk’s everything.  He is beginning to question his place in the club but when push comes to shove, the club comes first.

Sayer and Dirk thought they found their happiness but life has a way of intervening.  Now it’s a matter of holding onto every moment together and making the most of it.  Their life together not only touched their souls, but also touched the souls of every person that was important in their lives.  Their love was a testimony of true meaning of compassion, honesty, and giving.

I won’t say too much more because I don’t want to spoil the story.  I will say I walked away with mixed feelings about the Sinner’s Creed MC.  I sympathized with Shady’s reactions and felt I would follow the same path.  The ending may not be what is expected in a love story but it was the only way it could end.  My heart was broken but at the same time I felt like I experienced one of the most beautiful, epic love stories of all time.

I closed this book with a pile of used tissues, blood shot eyes, and the feeling of experiencing the true meaning of love.

Kim Jones wrote the epic love story.  I can’t wait for the next book in this series.  Shady has a new purpose and it may not be the same purpose the Sinner’s Creed MC intended for him.  A storm is brewing and I’m sure Kim Jones is going to deliver another epic MC love story.

Book Blurb:

Bennett Morse devotes his time to chasing two things: an NHL career and women. He’s the easygoing member of his three-man line on the Fenway Flyers, content to play the game he loves and soak up the female attention it brings – as long as it’s from a different woman each time. He learned the hard way that choosing only one leads to heartache.

Newly single attorney Charlotte Holloway finds just what she needs in Bennett – a sweet, sexy man to ease the burn of her recent breakup. One night is all she wants from the left winger who seems to have all the right moves. Soon circumstance draws her back to Bennett, and the sparks between them become a fiery blaze. But with the stakes high, will they risk it all and put their hearts on the line?

5Star

Tracey’s Review

When Bennett Morse and Charlotte Holloway meet by chance and decide to spend the night together, neither one is prepared for the outcome of their actions, or that their encounter would lead to anything more. But, when Fate, kismet, the Universe, call it what you will, steps in, the two find out quickly that sometimes things, and people, are not what they seem, and that life as they know it is about to be very different.

I have been a fan of Brenda for a very long time, and am never disappointed by the stories and characters that she creates. BENNETT, the second book in Brenda’s On the Line series, is no exception. In Bennett, Brenda has written a man that is not the usual player. Yes, he’s had his share of action, but his heart is in the game, and in getting called up to the professional team. When he meets Charlotte, who has recently broken up with her boyfriend, he is smitten. Everything about her appeals to him, and he is more than ready to see where things go. But Charlotte, raised by a mother who depended on men for her self-worth, isn’t about to jump right into another relationship. Strong and capable, she’s more than able to take care of herself, and isn’t afraid to let Bennett know.

What really makes this book so special is the way that Brenda continually takes her characters out of their comfort zones and allows them to rise to heights that they didn’t know they could attain. Bennett is so much more than just a hot hockey player, and is willing to overcome his personal demons to show Charlotte just how much she means to him, and what he’s willing to give up to be with her. And, Charlotte, afraid in her own way to let Bennett in, finds in him a safe place, where she can let someone else help her carry the load.

BENNETT is a wonderful addition to the On the Line series, and the story, the heart, the wonderful way that the main characters mesh, along with the supporting characters and their stories, combine to earn this read an easy 4.5 stars. And, having gotten to know Liam just a little bit in this book, I can’t wait for his story in the near future.

Book Blurb:

Killian Bosch knows he’s his own worst enemy – he just doesn’t give a damn. The star forward of a minor league hockey team, he’s unstoppable on the ice. His reckless behavior, devil-may-care attitude and complete disregard for consequences have made him a major source of headaches for the Fenway Flyers’ brass.

But the new Flyers owner is more steel than brass. Sidney Stahl is a disciplined woman who parlayed earnings from a college job into a real estate empire. She’s determined to transform the Flyers from marketing nightmare to hockey powerhouse. Once she gets Killian in line, she knows the rest of the team will follow his lead.

The seduction of his sexy new team owner is a challenge too forbidden for Killian to resist. Sidney plays into his attraction as a means of controlling him, but soon finds that she’s the one surrendering. It’s all on the line as Killian and Sidney are forced to choose – business or pleasure?

4.5 Star

Tracey’s Review

As the new owner of the Fenway Flyers, businesswoman Sidney Stahl has got her work cut out for her. Her only goal is to get her hockey team in fighting form, and to convince team captain Killian Bosch to set a good example for his teammates. Killian is anything but sedate. Working and playing hard, the last thing he’s looking for is to settle down and tow the line, but saying no to Sidney might not be as easy as he thinks.

KILLIAN is the first in a new series by author Brenda Rothert. Brenda is no stranger to delivering stories about hot hockey players. Her Fire On Ice series features some of the hottest pro players out there, and Killian and his friends are right in line to continue the trend. Killian is passionate, dedicated to the game and to his brothers on the team. Inspired to play his best by his new coach, Orion Caldwell, he finds himself drawn to Sidney, the new owner of the Flyers. Sidney knows that she should stay away from Killian, that getting involved with him is not the professional thing to do, but the heart wants what it wants, and these two definitely want each other.

I very much enjoyed reading KILLIAN. As always, Brenda has written a love story between characters with a lot of heart, but which is also absolutely full of passion and heat. Sidney and Killian are great foils for each other, each inspiring the other to evolve into better versions of themselves. Although their story is mostly wrapped up in this book, I look forward to seeing more of them in future books in the On the Line series, and to reading both Liam’s and Bennett’s stories.

A standalone romance from the New York Times bestselling author of Archer’s Voice.

Holden Scott is the prince of professional football. At least he was before he lost it all . . . or more to the point, before he threw it all away. Now he’s out of a job, out of the public’s good graces, and perhaps just a little out of his mind. The last thing he expects is to see a beautiful girl in the woods—one wearing a white, lace dress who appears in the moonlight, and leaves no footprints behind. Is she a dream? A ghost? A product of his muddled imagination? Or something entirely different?

Tracey’s Review

“Happily ever after doesn’t mean a lifetime of perfection. I don’t think anyone believes that happily ever after means there are no unhappy days, even unhappy years. It means loving forever, despite the many reasons it’s easier not to.”

I knew that MIDNIGHT LILY by author Mia Sheridan was going to be a different sort of book. And, let me say that it is like nothing I’ve ever read by Mia. This story is quite the departure, but is none the less magnificent for it.

MIDNIGHT LILY is, by turn, uplifting, nostalgic, heartbreaking, and healing, but it is always, at the heart of it, an epic love story. The characters are beautifully drawn, the story one that comes from an exceedingly gifted author who continues to amaze me with the stories that she crafts. With each page I was both intrigued and drawn in to this beautiful story, and I could not put it down.

I cannot recommend enough that you read this book. Rife with twists, turns, moments of wonder, it must be read to be experienced, because each person will take something different away from the story. MIDNIGHT LILY is an easy 5+ stars for me, and one that fans both old and new should have at the top of their reading lists. Thank you, Mia, for sharing this hauntingly beautiful story with us. You continue to blow me away.

Charlotte Lane

Buzz. Buzz.

Startled, I jump and quickly place the frame back in its place.

Buzz. Buzz.

It’s the call button from the lobby. I’m not sure what to do. I should probably ask Jasper if he is expecting anyone before I let whomever it is up.

The hallway he disappeared down is fairly long and at the end are two doors. Both are slightly ajar. I can hear the shower running and music playing. I try to place the song. Just as I go to knock, I pause, and then grin, it’s Led Zeppelin—the same music that used to blare from his garage when he was out there with his father.

Somehow in my absentminded quandary, my fingertips have nudged the door open just enough that I can see inside the bathroom. Perfectly. In my direct line of sight is a huge glass wall and he is just beyond it.

My pulse is beating so hard I can feel it pounding at all my pulse points. I should leave. I don’t need to bother Jasper. Whoever it is buzzing to come up can just come back later. Yet, I can’t move. Or maybe it’s more like I don’t want to move.

Steam hovers in the air but there’s not nearly enough to obscure anything. And there he is, naked in the water, head bent as it sluices over him. His eyes are closed. One hand is on the wall. The other slides slowly down his belly and lands between his thighs.

Oh, God.

Now I really can’t move. I’m frozen in place. His hand is on his cock. I swallow the noise my throat tries to make, but I’m sure I don’t do a good job of it. Thank you, Jesus, he doesn’t seem to notice. No, he definitely doesn’t notice because oh, my God, now he’s stroking himself. Slowly. Deliciously. Up, then down, and a twist of his palm around the head of his cock.

I shouldn’t be watching this, and yet I can’t look away. This is private. For him only, and yet I have to wonder if it’s because of me. Is it his attraction to me that made him step back just moments ago? Made him have to relieve the desire he was feeling? Then why did he say he wouldn’t kiss me again?

When he moves his wrist faster, I have to stifle my sudden harsh breath with my hand. My eyes are glued to his body and although I should leave, I can’t. I just can’t. Jasper, doing this to himself, is the most erotic thing I’ve ever seen in my life. The only thing stopping me from reaching between my own legs is my perverted fascination with wanting to watch him come. Oh, and of course the terror of getting caught.

His mouth opens, water filling it and overflowing when he tips his face into the spray. I want so much to be in there with him, share the water, and feel that mouth on my body, but I’m not sure that’s ever going to happen. We seem to be dancing around the attraction we feel for each other. Like both of us are afraid to take that leap from a two-decade-old friendship to intimacy. Afraid perhaps of where it might lead, or maybe where it won’t.

I can’t be sure.

Then again, it could be that the ghosts that accompany us are just too strong to bear.

Soon he’s fucking into his fist with a deliberation that makes me weak at the knees, and I watch. I watch the way his muscles cord in his arms, the way his cock moves within the confines of his fist, the way his face contorts into pure pleasure.

Looking at Jasper, watching him about to come, it opens up something within me. The feeling is hard to describe and I can only think of one word that is fitting—primal.

His cock disappears inside his curled fingers and this stroke seems somehow more determined. Up, down, a twist around his crown, and then another twist. This time his head dips down, and then lowers still.

I press my thighs together to ward off the ache of arousal that is flooding me. I can’t hear him, but I wish I could. I know what he’s feeling, though, because I can see his mouth open and his face contort with satisfaction. He’s close. I can tell. And then soon enough, his taut belly strains, the muscles in his legs bunch, and then it happens—his desire jets out.

Never in my life have I wanted to make myself come like I do right in this moment. No, that’s not true. Never in my life have I wished for a man to take me the way I wish for Jasper to take me right now. Still, this is all kinds of wrong. I shouldn’t have watched him. I know this. Chiding myself, I lick salt from my upper lip and slowly, cautiously take a step back.

“Is there a show going on that I wasn’t invited to?”

That voice. I know that voice. The cynicism behind the tone.

Oh, God.

No. No. No.

Michel’s Review

Imagine my shock when Set The Pace by Kim Karr released early. Our blog was scheduled to review the book on the original release day. I was scrambling to get this book read and have the review up before too many days passed by. As I began reading I was immediately sucked into their world.

Set The Pace was quite different from my first impressions after reading the synopsis for this book. I had it in my mind that this book was going to revolve around the auto racing sport. I was completely wrong. This book revolves around car designs and manufacturing. Detroit was the perfect city to set the scene for this story. But… there is much more to this book than developing and marketing a car in a decaying city. There’s a complex plot that began twenty years earlier. There are two murders, one obvious suspect, several people of interest, and one determined detective trying to close the case. Add a tragedy from twenty years earlier that destroyed hundreds of families and the children of that tragedy who are seeking their own peace of mind., the story becomes more complex.

For one it’s turning a tragedy into a positive beginning for the future. For another, it’s finding the answers as to what really happened and putting the ghosts to rest. For another, it’s seeking vengeance and revenge. Add a few players from the past, some self serving players in the present, and four men that want their car on the market, the plot becomes all the more complicated. Among all the mystery is a sizzling hot romance between two of the major players in the story. Before the budding relationship can blossom into a true commitment, the past and present tear them apart. To make this story even more interesting is the backdrop, Detroit City. The city takes on a life of itself. The people of Detroit have long memories, shattered hopes, poverty, and a dying city. All their hopes are on this new car manufacturer to bring jobs and prosperity back to their city.

Jasper Storm has a passion for cars. He has worked his entire adult life developing the car of the future, The Storm. Just as he is realizing his dreams, they are quickly becoming destroyed. He’s being framed for murder. It’s possible that someone is trying to sabatoge his creation, The Storm, before it hits the market. To make matters worse, the girl he hated for twenty years reappears back in town when everything begins to fall apart. The hate he has harbored turns into something beautiful when he gets to know the woman the girl has become.

Charlotte Lane disappeared in the middle of the night twenty years ago. The life she has lived has been haunted by the events of her last night in Detroit. She’s back in town to get answers and understand the truth. When her co worker, a writer for the blog is murdered on the night that could dictate the future Jasper Storm’s car, things become more complicated. Charlotte is forced to face the boy she left behind, Twenty years ago she desperately needed Jasper’s friendship. Today she desperately desires the man Jasper has become. It doesn’t matter what happened in the past or that Jasper could possibly be behind her co worker’s death. Her heart has always belonged to Jasper.

As the story unfolds, there are many twists and turns. The mystery becomes more complex. Kim Karr not only delivered the beginnings of a passionate romance but also a story that will keep the readers glued to the pages. Her vivid descriptions bring the characters to life, the city to life, and the mystery to life. She created so many questionable characters and questionable circumstances, that it makes it impossible to formulate a concrete theory. This book in many ways reminds me of the older detective television series from the past where solving a murder was anything but cut and dry. It was refreshing to become involved in this kind of story once again. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

A soldier, a doctor, and a stark white laboratory full of lies.

Amazon / Amazon UK

Blurb

I awaken in a laboratory.

I don’t know who I am.

I’m inexplicably drawn to the doctor who cares for me. She tells me I’ve been altered, that I’m stronger and faster, that I’ll be a key component in a war between corporations. She says I volunteered for this. She says I volunteered to be transformed, but I have no way of knowing if what she says is true.

Something isn’t right. My memories have been taken, wiped clean, but dreams begin to slip into my conscious mind. I can’t let anyone know when that happens, or they’ll remove my memories again. Somewhere inside of me, I know I need to remember something important.

I’m fighting a war I don’t understand, and the one woman I rely on can’t be trusted.

Suddenly, my body goes rigid. I can’t move at all, but I can feel a surge through my entire system. I can see it, taste it, smell it. My heart forces blood through my veins, warming my insides. As the blood flows, the muscles in my legs, arms, and chest flex.

“Sten? Are you all right?”

I try to focus on her face, but my vision is blurred.

“Hold on, Sten. You just need to ride it out.”

“What…” I can’t utter another word. My throat seizes up, and for a second, I am unable to take a breath.

Riley’s palm touches my face as she presses a sensor to my temple. My arm jerks, and I grasp her hand. I press it to my chest.

“Relax. Focus on your breath.”

“I can’t!”

She takes my free hand in hers and holds it to her body, right over her heart.

“Focus on me, then,” she says. “Feel my heartbeat.”

My fingers twitch. I can feel the steady beat in each fingertip. Closing my eyes, I count the beats. One hundred. Two hundred. Three hundred.

Minutes pass. I keep counting. Eventually, my body begins to adjust and my muscles relax. I become aware of not just her heartbeat, but of how close my hand is to her breast. My dick strains in my shorts.

I reach out with my legs, wrapping them around her waist and bringing her body toward my crotch. Releasing her hand, I reach up and grab the back of her head and use the other hand to push the collar of the lab coat out of the way. The blue of her blouse contrasts with her skin. It’s beautiful, enticing.

With one finger, I trace the edge of her collar, brushing over her skin. I can feel her heart beat under my fingertip, and I want to taste the spot where I’ve touched her. I look back to her eyes. She’s staring at my lips.

I bring us together, pressing my mouth to hers gently at first but then with more vigor. I can taste mint on her breath as my tongue slides over hers. I thread my fingers through her hair and tighten my thighs around her waist, holding her close to me. I trail my finger farther down her collar and spread my hand to cup her breast.

She pulls back, breaking the kiss.

“Sten, you’ll have to stop that now.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I know.” She touches the side of my face, running her hand over my rough cheek.

“I want you. I need you.” I don’t understand why I’m explaining myself. It’s clear to me from her scent that she wants this too, but she keeps pushing me away. She denies me as she denies herself.

Why?

Michel’s Review

Are you looking for something different to read?  A book where you can escape in the story as well as experience a sexy romance?  Look no further and read Specimen by Shay Savage.

I usually don’t read sci-fi or futuristic romance.  The blurb for Specimen caught my attention and I wanted to read this book.  It did not disappoint.

In the new world after a comet has destroyed the eco system two factions are vying for power.  The power comes from controlling the water and food resources.  After a lengthy war, they are now trying develop the perfect soldier.  A soldier that can survive without food and water for days.

When Sten wakes up in a laboratory without any memories, he’s confused and volatile. Dr. Riley Grace explains that he volunteered for the new program to create the perfect soldier. He doesn’t remember his past life, the war, or volunteering.  He has to take her for her word.

He has become the prime Specimen in this new program but something isn’t right.  He’s beginning to have memories and they aren’t of the same life they proclaimed he had.  To top it off he has become dependent on Dr. Riley Grace for more than sexual satisfaction.  She is the key to helping him regain control of his life once more.

Specimen is fast paced with an intense plot.  The characters, the pacing of the story, and vivid descriptions make this book seem like a movie.  I became engrossed in the story and could not put it down.  Shay Savage created a world that comes to life.

I highly recommend Specimen by Shay Savage!

Excerpt

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

 4.5 StarTracey’s Review

Sadie and Nathan Hunt have always had the perfect marriage. Really, that’s how people introduce them, and Sadie has always believed that they lived up to it. Until lately. Lately, Nathan isn’t the husband that he’s always been, and Sadie is left feeling alone and confused. When new neighbor Finn Cohen moves in, he and Sadie begin spending time together. A lot of time. Before long, Sadie is finding Nathan’s distance a little more tolerable, but when lines begin to blur, deciding what matters most will take everything she has.

This book absolutely wrung me out. I mean, the emotions, people. It was like a roller coaster; you’re hanging on for dear life, but can’t stop the ride because it’s that thrilling, that enthralling. That’s what reading SLIP OF THE TONGUE was like for me.

I had read previous books by author Jessica Hawkins, and enjoyed them, so was really looking forward to this story. Forbidden romance, possible love triangle, what wasn’t to like? Oh.My.Goodness, I am telling you, this book. I got immediately and completely sucked in, and believe me when I tell you that I read later than I have in forever just so that I could finish this book, because I could not put it down.

The characters are complex in SLIP OF THE TONGUE; Jessica has done a great job of creating a realistically possible situation, along with characters that seem more human and easier to relate to than not. There were elements that I liked and did not like in Sadie, Nathan, and Finn, things that made it understandable, though not acceptable, regarding the choices that they made. Some of my favorite characters were actually supporting ones, especially Sadie’s boss, Amelia, and Sadie’s brother, Andrew, and niece, Bell (she was hoot; she’ll be kicking butt and taking names in a few years, bet on it).

SLIP OF THE TONGUE is a book that I had waited for with anticipation, and I can happily say that it does not disappoint. This book is an emotional, realistic, sometimes gritty read, and gets a solid 4.5 stars from me. I look forward to reading more from Jessica in the near future, and wouldn’t mind seeing Andrew get his own story. Grab this one and read it. I feel certain that you will not regret it.

PROTECTING CAROLINE
by Susan Stoker
Book 1, SEAL of Protection Series
Matthew “Wolf” Steel hated flying
commercial. Luckily his job as a Navy SEAL meant he didn’t have to do it very
often. He’d been unlucky enough to be assigned a middle seat on the cramped
jet, but fortunately for him, the woman next to him was willing to switch seats
with him. Hoping for a relaxing flight, Wolf was pleasantly surprised at the
good conversation and sense of humor the woman had as they flew 36,000 feet
over the countryside.
When Caroline boarded the plane to
Virginia to move across the country for her new job she never expected to be
seated next to the hottest guy she’d ever seen. She also never expected he’d be
so easy to talk to. She knew he’d never be interested in talking to her if he
hadn’t been trapped in the seat next to her, but it was a nice way to spend a long
plane ride.
Neither Wolf nor Caroline were
prepared for a terrorist hijacking of their plane, but if Caroline thought that
would be the last time she’d see, or need, Wolf, she’d be sorely mistaken.

Excerpt

I was about twenty minutes early for my shift, but I got up to the bar, grabbed a rag, started wiping it down, bussing some dishes.

“Damn, Luke,” Jake said, watching me work. “You win the lotto or something? Royals win the pennant last night and I forgot to watch?”

“I’m just in a good mood, that’s all,” I said.

I thought about it a moment longer, decided I should tell him more. Impart some wisdom learned from my not-particularly-advanced years.

“When everything’s dark for so damn long and your eyes get used to it,” I said, “just a little glimmer of sunshine lights up the whole world.”

He nodded, then grabbed a bus bin and headed back into the kitchen.

Warren though, Warren wasn’t impressed. He was sitting by one of the daytime barflies, but he’d stopped talking and was just watching me. I was on thin ice, and I knew it. I couldn’t afford to lose my job. A heartbroken, drunk, angry widower is probably as unemployable as the average ex-con.

I came on at the end of the day shift. Warren liked tending bar during the day, because it meant just shooting the shit with the regulars. That day I had a smile for every customer, sparse words of wisdom like day drunks want to hear. Tending bar wasn’t my dream. But to hell with letting that make me lazy. I kept the place clean, I poured drinks like I cared.

I was getting into the swing of it when happy hour kicked in and a few more people filtered through the door. Couple of middle-aged bikers, a retired couple that parked their RV out front.

The door swung open again, letting in a little bit of that early-evening cold, and I glanced up to see a crowd of three women, with two men. One of the women was a reddish blonde, radiant. Sort of stole the light out of the room. It was Rae. Our eyes met and her smile gave the room back its light.

She’d been in jeans at the shelter, but she was in a blue dress now and she looked damn fine in either. Took my mind right off Maggie, faster than I thought it would be possible. I met her eyes, and she gave out a little gasp and giggle. I was probably smiling in surprise myself.

The crowd came over to the bar. I’d thought the other four were two couples, but I realized pretty quick that the black girl with the afro was dating the quiet white guy in a beard and glasses and tattoos, and that the other guy was trying to impress Rae. He had a John Deere hat, but his clothes were way too clean for me to buy it that he worked on a farm. I hated him, right off. I probably would have hated him if he was the best guy in the world, though. The other girl, she was tall, latina, and for some indiscernible reason was interested in the poser farmer.

Most of the time, I’m awful at reading people. But for some reason, at work I can tell you everything about everyone who walks in the door. About who’s into who, about who had a bad day at work. Who wants to get drunk and miserable, who wants to get drunk and happy, who wants to get drunk and start trouble. Maybe it’s some magic of the job, maybe it’s just how people carry themselves at a bar. Helps with tips, that’s for certain. You wingman right, and the money flows in.

Warren, he likes to upsell them drinks when he’s doing that. Get them excited about the top shelf. Not me.

“Hey, Rae,” I said.

“Luke,” she said.

John Deere looked at me like I was the scum of the earth. And maybe I was, but if I was the scum then he was… I don’t know, something worse than scum. Wannabe scum.

She introduced me to her friends. Nicole had the afro, her boyfriend was Eric. The girl with bad taste was Irina, and John Deere had some name but honestly it went in one ear and out the other. He was John Deere to me. Yeah, maybe I’m an asshole.

“So, how do you know this guy?” Deere asked, tossing me a look that said I clearly wasn’t good enough to be friend with someone like Rae.

“Oh, he came in just the other day. Adopted the sweetest dog, a bloodhound.” She turned to me, flashing that dimple high on her cheek. “How is he? You guys call a truce yet?”

“King’s great,” I said. “I mean, he’s probably at home right now, eating everything I’ve ever owned, but I figure I was due for a purge anyway, right?”

It was a lame attempt at humor, but Rae laughed.

“What can I get you all? Friend of Rae’s is a friend of mine.”

Imagine finding the love of your life when you’re in high school.  A love so pure and whole. Taking the next step is only natural.  Marriage, careers, and maybe kids.  But what happens when fate steps in and takes it all away before it could blossom to it’s full potential.  It’s pure devastation, heartbreak, and loss.  Not only have you lost the one person that means the most to you, you have lost the other half of your self.  You are left to navigate through life without purpose or hope.

One year after Emily’s death, Luke is still reeling from the loss.  He has pulled away from his family, friends, and business.  He’s barely surviving his grief.  The loss, guilt, and loneliness are just a few of the side effects he’s feeling.  Then one day a package is on his doorstep.  The package contains nine letters from his wife Emily.  These letters has specific tasks and instructions that he must follow before opening the next letter.

Opening the first letter is like ripping his heart out.  He’s shocked when he reads the instructions.  Get A Dog.  Thus begins Luke’s journey to becoming the man he was meant to be.  Each letter is more than a task, it is a revelation.

Blake Austin delivered an emotional story that is more than an epic love story.  It was a story of hope and redemption.  I could not put this book down and blew through an entire box of tissues while reading 9 Letters.
