Chasing Abby is the conclusion to the highly acclaimed Shattered Hearts series by Cassia Leo.  Readers have been waiting for this book since the series began.

Chris and Claire Knight have waited eighteen years for this moment.  The moment to meet the daughter they gave up for adoption because of their mistakes in their youth.  The regret has weighed on their souls for the last eighteen years.  They have moved on in life and made a beautiful family.  They have become huge successes in their careers.  They have become parents of three more children.  The one thing missing in their lives has been their first born child, Abby.

Abby has had a loving life with her adoptive parents.  Although she has had a happy life, her life experiences have been very limited and controlled because of her severe heart condition.  Her health issues have caused her adoptive parents to become obsessively over protective of her. They have kept her adoption a secret all her life.  When a life threatening hospital stay reveals the truth about her adoption, she will have to wait until her eighteenth birthday to find out who her real birth parents are.

Her life in general has been very happy.  Her adoptive parents love her.  She has great friends.  She even has a phenomenal boyfriend, Caleb Everett, that whole heartedly supports her and takes great care ensuring her good health and happiness.

The moment she has waited for is finally here.  Through years of pictures in a bank safety deposit box, Abby finally finds out who her biological parents are.  She is stunned.  Through Caleb’s support and encouragement she finally gets up the nerve to meet them face to face.

The reunion is emotional on so many levels.  Chris and Claire are finally meeting their long lost daughter.  Their fears of acceptance are heartfelt.  Their joy of finally being able to openly love their child is exalting.  Now they want Abby to become part of their family.  They want her to get to know her two brothers and sister.  They want her in their lives.  But with Abby’s serious health issues their future is not guaranteed.  Time isn’t on their side.

They have one summer to love and become the family they always wanted to be.  It will be a summer filled with wonder and hope.  It will also be a summer of adjustment, building relationships, dealing with sibling rivalry, and facing shattering heartbreak.

This book had me an emotional wreck.  When I finished this book I was sitting in a pile of kleenex.  It is one of the best UGLY cries I have had.  I felt every emotion each of these characters felt.  I was proud of the kind of woman Abby turned out to be.  I was elated for Chris and Claire to finally mend the hole in their hearts they had for eighteen years.  I broke right along with Abby when her heart took away the very life of her soul. This book has the same kind of emotional impact as Fault In Our Stars did.

Cassia Leo did a magnificent job with this book.  Everything about this book was complete perfection.  Read the Shattered Hearts series.

This is the last published book from Cassia Leo.  This book will be her blaze of glory.

Cassia will continue writing under a new pen name.  I look forward to her new direction and new persona.  I want to thank her for giving the readers so many fabulous books.

Synopsis

Summerhill, Book 5

Summer Welles wants the fairy tale.

The illegitimate daughter of Reginald Summerhill, the Earl of Amberlin, she listened to her mother’s stories about the Summerhill girls all her life. In her mind, Summer was part of the stories too—living in the castle, wearing fancy dresses, and falling in love with Prince Charming.

Her wish came true. Mostly. She lives in the Summerhill mansion. She has stepsisters—nice ones who don’t make her clean the chimney. She even has a magical wedding dress waiting for her special day. The only thing missing is the perfect man.

She knows exactly who he is, and she’s going to confront him at the annual Midnight Masquerade Ball. What Summer didn’t count on was mistaking a masked frog for her prince.

Once she kisses the mysterious man, he won’t go away. And he’s not sweet or charming or princely. He seems more interested in ravishing her rather than riding off into the sunset with her, and—worse—she’s tempted to let him.
Her fairy tale at stake, Summer’s faced with her own quest that neither frog nor prince can rescue her from: sacrifice her Happily Ever After, or turn her back on the one man who makes her feel alive?

Kelley’s Review

This is a love story with a twist. I adored this read. You can’t help but fall in love with Summer after everything she has been through. Summer only recently found out that she is the illegitimate child of Reginald Summerhill. She had no idea that he had another family. Because of an act of fate she is accepted into the Summerhill family and has begun to form an amazing bond with her half siblings and their mother. Now she wants a few of them have. A man who is good and kind to share the rest of her life with. She believes she has found that man and he is Ryan Huber. Ryan works in the same building as she and she has been pinning for him from afar. He gives to charity and is handsome and she can tell from his eyes that there is kindness in him. The problem is that Ryan just announced his engagement and Summer feels she might have missed her chance at true love. So she decides she is going to confront him at a masquerade ball with a kiss and that he will be swept off his feet just like the prince is in all the fairy tales she read as a child.

Jon Smith has been hired to check into Ryan. There are questions about whether or not he might me misappropriating funds. So Jon goes undercover as a favor to an old friend as a very wealthy man looking to invest some money. The last thing Jon saw coming was Summer Welles. He ran into her on an elevator and listened as she spoke to her sister about being Ryan’s fiancée. Jon thought Ryan was a very lucky man. You can only imagine the shock and awe when Summer kisses him by mistake at the masquerade ball. There is undeniable chemistry right away but there is no way that Jon is interested in a kind of relationship even if the woman makes his heart race. He has plans to retire. Besides she wants Ryan not him.

I loved how Kate wove a tale of deceiving appearances. You really can’t judge a book by its cover. This story had a fun twist that I really enjoyed. The banter between Jon and Summer had me laughing out loud. Kate does a great job with character development. Jon is a broken man who just wants to close up shop so he can disappear from it all. She brings Jon around to coming to the realization that retirement might not be what it is cracked up to be. Summer is full of life and hides behind her black suits. She wants to be noticed, but then she doesn’t. The unwanted chemistry between Jon and Summer is sizzling.

I have truly adored this series. It has this historical feel in modern times. I am so excited to see what Summerhill girl will be married off next. If you are a fan of Historical or Contemporary Romance you will love Once Upon A Dream as well as the other books in this series. It has been a favorite of mine and I am really looking forward to visiting Summerhill again soon.

Everything done in darkness, will eventually be brought into the light.

I ran, but all it did was keep me one step ahead of my past. I tried to start over; new name, new identity. But you can’t change your soul.
A fresh start at college was just what I needed. For a while, it worked. I was the party girl, the one that seemed confident, but it was a lie.
When guys kissed me–I felt only pain.
When they touched me–Nothing but fear.

Deep inside, every girl wants to be the beauty in the story, to find someone that will see you as their world.
But the truth? I was the beast. And as much as I wanted redemption, I wasn’t fool enough to think I’d ever get it.
Until he walked into my life.

I wasn’t prepared to fall for someone. My scars were too deep, the wounds too raw. But he offered me peace, he offered me security. I should have known it was just another lie–I should have known that falling in love with my professor was a bad idea.
But I was powerless to stop myself from falling.
And he was powerless to catch me.

Because the darkness finally caught up to me, and as fate would have it, a cruel twist almost bled me dry. But I’m stronger than I knew. I’m stronger than you think.

Excerpt

It was hard to explain the way he spoke to me; at times he was flirtatious and well… happy. Other times? It seemed like he was fighting another side of himself, one that was more reserved, uptight, controlled. And if you were to ask me which side scared me the most? I’d say both. Because both sides were dangerous to me — both pushed a person like me past the point of no return. His seriousness made me curious; his flirtation made me want more.

“Just dinner?” I asked. “Isn’t that against the rules?”

“Yeah, well…” He glanced down briefly before flashing a sensual smile, his eyes dilating. “…it seems to be an impulse I can’t really control around you.”

“Control’s overrated, you label-making fool.”

At that he laughed, a rich chuckle that had my entire body relaxing and heating at the same time. I took a step toward him and smiled. “So, rule-breaker, where are we going?”

He grabbed his messenger bag and keys. “You’ll see.”

“Cryptic.” My eyebrows arched as I crossed my arms over my chest. “This isn’t going to turn into one of those six o‘clock news things where the crazy professor takes the girl out then buries her in the woods, is it?” I tried to sound like I was joking, but the minute the words left my mouth, it was no longer funny. Suddenly, I realized how stupid it would be to go with him. I knew nothing about him, nothing at all!

He smiled, tilting his head toward me. “Why am I getting the sudden urge to pull out a list of character references?”

“Because I just scared myself,” I admitted out loud.

“You want my social security number?” He winked. “Credit score? First grade class photo? Oh, and by the way, in first grade I was nominated most likely to own a pet store… so, if you aren’t okay with that, we probably shouldn’t continue this.”

“This?”

“Dinner.”

“Because you liked pets?”

“I wanted to own a lizard farm.”

I covered my mouth with my hands and nodded solemnly. “All little boys have dreams.”

“A bully crushed mine when he told me lizard farms don’t exist.” He shook his head. “In second grade I was voted least likely to succeed, on account that I didn’t speak for the entire year.”

“Why’s that?” I took another step toward him.

He took another step in my direction and shrugged. “It took me a while to get over the lizards.”

“So you stopped speaking?”

“It was more of me trying to make the public aware of my outrage.”

“Ah, like lizard strike.”

“I made shirts.”

“Tell me, professor, is that when the label-making started?”

“No.” He nodded toward the door and started walking. I followed, genuinely interested in what he was going to say and hating that it was possible he was stringing me along only to go all cold-crazy-psycho on me again. “That was an entirely different situation.” He pulled the door open.

“What? No more stories?” I asked.

“Dinner.” He shrugged, his eyes a stormy gray. “I’ll tell you at dinner.”

“Bribery.”

“My trump card. Label-maker stories. You know, I do actually know how to romance a woman.”

“Well…” I cleared my throat and broke eye contact. “…since I’m your student, I’ll just take your word for it.”

“Right,” he said quickly then repeated, “Right, shall we?”

“Lead the way.” I forced a smile and tried to remember that this was dinner, nothing romantic, just my very sexy professor once again apologizing for being a jackass during class.

Michel’s Review

Shame is the third book in The Ruin series by Rachel Van Dyken.  I have loved every book in this series.  Lisa has been a prominent character throughout this series.  From her dedicated friendship to “Taco Tuesday’s” the readers have come to love her character.  There is an air of mystery concerning her past that the readers are finally going to see.

Lisa was not always the happy go lucky college girl she appears to be.  She has a very dark past.  A past she is ashamed of, with just cause.

Lisa was a model in her past life.  She was wild, selfish, insecure, and easily influenced by others.  Being raised in a town where looks and appearances are everything, her insecurities run deep.

Lisa had the wrong kind of friends and the wrong kind of boyfriend.  Her actions towards others went past the point of bullying to downright cruelty.  Together with her boyfriend, they destroyed young lives and humiliated unsuspecting people.  To them it was all a game.  But in reality it was total destruction, not only to their victims but to themselves.  After a horrific incident, that resulted in death, Lisa no longer wants to be the girl she is.  The opportunity arises for her to change her life when her good friend Gabe decides to do a life makeover.  Gabe and Lisa move to Washington to attend college.  They change their names and identities.  This is Lisa’s chance to become the person she truly wants to be.

The past has a way of catching up with her.  Frightening letters and incidents begin to happen to Lisa.  She feels like she is being stalked and fears for her life.  Her new life is beginning to crumble and she may have to pay for her past sins.

While she is living in fear, she also finds one bright spot in her life.  Her new professor is opening her eyes to a new reality.  She is falling in love with him.  But he has secrets as well.

Can Lisa live with her shame and find love?  Read the book!

Shame is much more than a romance.  It is a psychological thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat.  It is amazing how Rachel Van Dyken blended the emotional highs and lows that go along with fear and love.

I highly recommend the Ruin series.  Shame can be read as a stand alone novel.

Ruin- Book 1

ruinI’m not your typical girl. I’ve been running away from the memories that haunt me for so long that depression has become my only comfort. I was content in the darkness…until Wes Michels offered to be my light.

Sometimes when you think it’s the end, it’s only the beginning. Wes thought he could save me, but in giving me everything, he ruined me. Because after one kiss, one touch, I couldn’t–I wouldn’t ever be the same.

And from that moment on, his heartbeat became my own.

He looks up and I watch his eyes take me in. Slowly. They rake over me, dropping from my eyes to my glossed lips down to my exposed shoulders. Taking his time, he follows the neckline of my simple, yet body contouring sundress, lingering when he reaches my full breasts. I’m sufficiently covered, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t aware that the dress showed off my assets well. Tight around my chest, gathering snuggly at the waist, with a scant amount of cleavage. Just enough coverage to still leave something for him to imagine. And I watch his face change as his imagination takes off running.

His eyes drift down my legs, tanned now from the eternal California sun. Momentarily he’s lost in what he sees and doesn’t even notice I’m watching him leer. Totally worth the extra effort getting ready tonight, I couldn’t be happier at the reaction I get. Eventually, his eyes make their way back up to mine and I arch one eyebrow, letting him know he’s been caught. A normal reaction might be to look embarrassed or perhaps even flustered a little. But not Zack. Instead, he flashes me a wicked grin. “You look incredible.” He’s the one doing the leering, yet I’m the one who ends up blushing.

Excerpt

I grabbed a plastic cup and filled it with vodka. Weaving through a group of women who were dancing, I found myself surrounded, trapped by hungry, grinding hips, fingers that snuck up my t-shirt and lips that whispered in my ear. I couldn’t hear her words, but had enough sense to know when I was being invited into a woman’s bed.

I tipped my cup back and opened my throat, letting ounce after ounce of burning vodka slide down. When it was gone, I tossed the cup aside and grabbed the waist of the girl in front of me. I pulled her ass against me and grinded into her. She threw her head back against my chest, lifted her arms over her head and swiveled as she bent her knees, lowering herself below my waist. She turned, hooked her fingers behind my belt and looked up at me with smoldering eyes. She licked her lips. My cock twitched in anticipation. I grabbed her by the arm and pulled her up. “Outside,” I said. “Now.”

We pushed through the crowd and stepped out onto the sidewalk. Her hand squeezed my ass. I reached over and tweaked her nipple, hard through her tight, stretchy shirt.

We rounded the corner to the side of the motel. A few people stood down at the far end of the building, but it was dark enough she could blow me. She put her hands on my chest and groaned low in her throat. “God, I want this body,” she said.

“I want your mouth on me.” I squeezed her tits, and her hands ran down over my stomach. She squatted down, unbuttoning my jeans. The zipper followed, and her hand pulled me out. I leaned back against the brick wall as her lips closed around my head. Her mouth was hot, and she knew how to stroke a cock. After the day I had, coming in this chick’s mouth was about all I had the strength left in me to do.

I watched her as she sucked me in. Her hand disappeared up her skirt, getting herself off at the same time. That should’ve done it for me, but I was distracted. I wasn’t even enjoying it. I don’t know what the fuck my problem was.

“That’s enough,” I said, hauling her to her feet.

“What’s wrong?” She stumbled in her heels, and I held her up.

“Nothing. It was perfect. I’m just not into it tonight.”

She looked disappointed. And pissed. “Yeah. Well. Whatever. No big deal. Your dick’s not that big anyway.” It was a lie. We both knew it.

I tucked it back in my pants and watched her retreat around the corner of the building. I waited a few minutes until my cock settled down, then went back around to the sidewalk. I should’ve stayed in my room. I was in no mood for a party and all the fake bullshit that went along with it.

When I got to the door to the party, this one chick wouldn’t move to let me by. “Hey,” I said. “Excuse me. I need by you.”

She turned and locked her bloodshot blue eyes on me.

Time froze as we stared at each other.

Her blond hair was dull, her complexion sallow, her body too thin. Drugs. I’d know their effects anywhere.

“Danny,” I said, catching her by the elbows. “Do you know who I am?”

Her eyes trailed over my face. Jesus, she was rocked out of her mind. Her pupils were dilated and sweat dripped down her neck between her small breasts into her low-cut shirt.

“Danielle,” I said, leaning closer. “It’s me—Tyler.”

“Tyler,” she said, and threw her arms around my neck.

Guilt crushed against my sternum. I left her, and look what she became. “Let’s get out of here.” I turned her around and steered her down the sidewalk.

Michel’s Review

If you are looking for a short book to read you may want to consider Chains by Kelli Maine.  It is a gripping story of an MMA fighter stepping outside of the ring and taking on a new fight in the real world of life.

Tyler Graves has a bright future in the world of MMA fighting.  He is about to turn pro.  He just needs a few more fights in the amateur circuit.  While competing in one of those fights his contender starts running his mouth about Danielle Debasco.  The one and only girl he ever loved.  A girl that shared his abusive past.  A girl that he left behind when he escaped at age eighteen.  A girl that deserves more than his desertion.  A girl that owns his heart.

Learning that Danny’s life has gone even farther downhill than the abusive past they shared, Tyler is determined to find her.  He will have to make choices that could ruin his life now.  The choices can ruin his career.  But if he can save Danny, any choice he makes will be worth it.

After Tyler beat their foster father to near death and left home, Danny has been subject to harsher abuses from him.  Her escape is in the world of drugs.  She is an addict that will do anything for another fix.  She doesn’t want Tyler to rescue her from her life.

As this story unfolds the readers will experience the horrific past that Tyler, Danny, and their  foster brother endured.  Each came out of those experiences scarred.  Each chose a different path in life.  For Tyler it was professional fighting, for Alex it was controlling his life and wealth by dealing drugs, and for Danny it was escaping in drug abuse and trying to stay one step ahead of her obsessive foster father.  These three will reunite and become the family they once were.

There will be some horrific events that will shatter them all.  The one thing that ties them together will be the one thing that can destroy their lives.  Their foster father, Striker.

Danny and Tyler will find the lasting love they have always craved but they will have to pay a high price for that love.

Chains was a good short book.  I would of liked to seen this book a bit longer.  The plot was strong and held me captive, but I did feel it was rushed.  The events throughout the book happened in a matter of days.  To me it didn’t seem like enough time for Danny to give up her addiction, for Danny and Tyler to form a strong relationship, and to escape the clutches of Striker.  I was also unclear of the background of the story, such as where they were from, how Striker could easily find them, and what happened to Alex in the in between years.

If you are looking for a short book to read , Chains by Kelli Maine will fit the bill.

He’s So Fine

Lucky Harbor Series- Book 11

By Jill Shalvis

Synopsis

For Olivia Bentley, Lucky Harbor is more than the town where she runs her new vintage shop. It’s the place where folks are friendly to strangers-and nobody knows her real name. Olivia does a good job of keeping her past buried, not getting too cozy with anyone . . . until she sees a man drowning. Suddenly she’s rushing into the surf, getting up close and personal with the hottest guy she’s ever laid hands on.

Charter boat captain Cole Donovan has no problem with a gorgeous woman throwing her arms around his neck in an effort to “save” him. In fact, he’d like to spend a lot more time skin-to-skin with Olivia. He’s just not expecting that real trouble is about to come her way. Will it bring her deeper into Cole’s heart, or will it be the end of Olivia’s days in little Lucky Harbor?

Michel’s Review

Arc provided by publisher, via Netgalley, for a fair and honest review.

He’s So Fine by Jill Shalvis is the eleventh book in the Lucky Harbor Series. It is another Small Town romance at it’s finest.

He’s So Fine features Cole Donovan, one of the guys that runs the boat charter company in Lucky Harbor. He is a straight shooting and no nonsense kind of guy. He is a bit of a nerd and can fix about anything. He is always prepared for something to happen. He rolls with the punches and takes most things in stride. On the romance front, he is at a standstill. He has been betrayed, hurt, and left to grieve after a fatal accident . His bachelorhood is about to be tested when he meets Olivia Bentley.

Olivia Bentley is the eccentric owner of the vintage store across the street from the boat charter company. She is a free spirit. She is enjoying her life, paying her bills, becoming successful with her business, and the freedom from her former life. She is enjoying the delicious eye-candy across the street from her store. One piece of candy is extra tempting and Olivia is finding she wants a taste of Cole Donovan.

As these two opposites come together, the sparks fly. Neither one wants to be in a relationship. But their chemistry is through the roof. These two will go through the wringer to get to their happily ever after. The wringer is not always as bad as one would think. They both had incredible twists and turns. They will have to get past their secrets and old fears. They will have to learn to let go. They will have to learn to hang on. In the end, a red hot relationship will be just what they both needed.

The dialogue and interactions between Cole and Olivia was downright sexy and fun. The intensity these two shared was hot!

Jill Shalvis never fails to blend laugh out humor and emotional angst leading to a sizzling hot romance. Her characters are perfectly flawed and delightful. She creates a story that flows effortlessly and keeps the readers captivated. It is no wonder the Lucky Harbor Series is such a great success. I look forward to book twelve in the series.

I highly recommend He’s So Fine and The Lucky Harbor series by Jill Shalvis.
