New Release + Blog Tour + Review: Broken Knight by LJ Shen

“Everyone needs to read this book. “

– Harloe Rae, USA Today bestselling author.

Broken Knight, an all new standalone about first loves, betrayal and loss from USA Today bestselling author L.J. Shen, is available now!

IMG_1621.jpg

Not all love stories are written the same way. Ours had torn chapters, missing paragraphs, and a bittersweet ending.

Luna Rexroth is everyone’s favorite wallflower.

Sweet.

Caring.

Charitable.

Quiet.

Fake.

Underneath the meek, tomboy exterior everyone loves (yet pities) is a girl who knows exactly what, and who, she wants—namely, the boy from the treehouse who taught her how to curse in sign language.

Who taught her how to laugh.

To live.

To love.

Knight Cole is everyone’s favorite football hero.

Gorgeous.

Athletic.

Rugged.

Popular.

Liar.

This daredevil hell-raiser could knock you up with his gaze alone, but he only has eyes for the girl across the street: Luna.

But Luna is not who she used to be. She doesn’t need his protection anymore.

When life throws a curveball at All Saints’ golden boy, he’s forced to realize not all knights are heroes.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories flourish in tragedy.

“The heart doesn’t ask for permission to feel things. It simply feels.” -Broken Knight

Broken Knight is the second book in the All Saints High Series by LJ Shen. It tells the story of Knight Cole (son of Dean Cole and Rosie LeBlanc) and Luna Rexroth (daughter of Trent Rexroth) and their tragically beautiful love story.

This book is everything. Leigh is talented in her storytelling and always delivers a great story, but this is different. This is more. This book is easily my top read of 2019 and a story that I will never forget. Leigh has put her heart and soul into this book. It grapples so much more than young love and romance. It deals with real life, and sometimes real life can be hard, tragic and ugly.

I think what makes this book so special is that Leigh has a way of taking very hard subject matter and adding moments to alleviate the heaviness that the reader will feel when reading this book. That takes talent! Not every author can do that, but Leigh has.

I really can’t say enough about this story. It’s beautiful. It’s tragic. It’s real. It’s deep. It’s Leigh’s best book to date and that says a lot because I love all her books, but this story really resonated with me and will be a book that I will never ever forget.

Also, be prepared to highlight a lot while you read! So many amazing passages and quotes.

I can’t really use stars to rate this book because it’s beyond that. It’s Infinity and Beyond the Stars!

Excerpt:

“Need some help?”

I’m on my tiptoes when the question comes, trying to reach a book on the top shelf in the bookstore at the student center.

My heart does a nosedive off a cliff as that familiar gruff voice washes over me, his accent a smooth drawl that’s reminiscent of hot summer nights and slow kisses—kisses we never had…well, except for that one time freshman year.

I ignore him and try to grab the book.

“You’re too short. Let me,” Blaze says, this time closer, his voice soft.

I ease back on my feet and whip around, internally wishing I’d worn something more I hate you and don’t you wish you still had me, but sadly, I’m not in my kickass shoes and itchy dress. Today it’s flat-soled red Converse, black joggers, and a Yankees sweatshirt. I blow at a piece of hair in my face. Shit.

Of course, he looks magnificent in a tight long-sleeved black shirt that clings to his broad chest and tapered jeans molded to those leg muscles. His face is unshaven, the darkness on his jawline adding a broody look.

Curse him and his hotness.

I stare at him a little too long, until I snap out of it.

“I don’t need help,” My voice is strangled as I move to brush past him—forget the textbooks—but he reaches out and takes my elbow.

“Charisma—”

His fingers are a hot brand on my skin—it’s the first time we’ve touched in three months—and I pull away. A tremble starts in my legs. How dare he?It was one thing to see him in a social setting and pretend I was fine, but when we’re face to face without people watching… “Don’t put your hands on me. I’m not your hookup anymore, football player.”

His face reddens, and he drops his arms. “I didn’t mean—” he stops, not finishing as he studies my face.

I wonder what he sees. You know what he sees, Charisma—someone who wasn’t up to his usual standards.

Everything I didn’t say last night rushes out. “Didn’t mean to what? Dump me in the middle of my own sorority’s party in front of all my friends and half of campus? And you know, that’s totally fine. We both knew I wasn’t enough to keep your attention.”

His jaw clenches and he frowns, his brow furrowing. “I didn’t plan for things to happen that way.”

“How did you want to break up with me? Over candlelight? A text would have worked just fine,” I bite out.

The silence builds between us, and he watches me intently, as if trying to figure me out. He starts at my hair and works his way down to my feet, then comes back to my face. Just when I think I might combust from the intensity of his eyes, he looks away.

“What?” I cock my hip. “You look like you want to say something.”

He taps his hand against his leg. Ice-blue eyes, ones I used to stare into and get butterflies from, glitter down at me. “You just can’t handle that ended things, sweetheart.”

“Not your sweetheart.”

“Never were.”

Shit…shit…my heart feels like an anvil just landed on it, heavy and hard, and I can’t breathe for a second at his words, part of me pissed, the other part devastated. I wanted to be his sweetheart, I did, but he…

You’re not my type.

“Thanks for the reminder,” I say quietly, my anger folding away piece by piece and slipping into that horrible self-pity I despise.

He closes his eyes and scrubs his face with those talented hands, strong and big and capable, skillful with a football.

He steps in front of me, much like he did last night, and I tilt my head back to take him in. At my height of five feet, three inches, it’s hard to glare at a guy who towers over you and not look ridiculous, but I manage—until his eyes flicker with lingering emotion.

I dart my eyes around the store, searching for a way out, but I’m stuck between him and a bookshelf. “You’re blocking my path.” I focus on his legs. No sexiness there—well, except for the tight muscles under that denim.

“This is what I know,” he says in a low voice, ignoring my statement. “You told me we were just messing around. You set all the rules. Isn’t that how you operate? So why does me ending things with you even matter?”

“You never asked for more. You could have.” The revealing words fall around us, tinged with hurt, and I want to pull them back.

The silence between us crackles, yet I’m aware of other people around us. There are a few girls on another aisle, and I glance over as one of them pulls out her phone. No doubt she’s taking a picture of him. Part of me retreats, anxious she’ll get me in that photo—a girl who clearly doesn’t belong. He doesn’t notice. Everyone knows who he is, and they’re probably wondering why he’s talking to me.

“No, I didn’t,” he finally says, the words taut as if pulled from him unwillingly. He taps his leg, his tell that he’s anxious or angry. We weren’t together long, but every moment we spent together, I studied him like a wine connoisseur given a glass of rare cabernet. I know what makes him laugh, usually random things that make no sense. I know that groan he makes deep in this throat when he slides inside me, like he’s home. I know the feel of his hand when he cups my face and stares at me, a hesitant expression on his face—

“You can’t even look at me anymore. I wonder why,” he says, his voice a challenge.

Steeling myself, I face those baby blues. “You know why. I wish we’d never met up last fall. I wish you’d never flirted with me. I wish I’d never fucked you that first time in the library—”

“Same page. Same fucking page, Charisma.” And then he’s walking away, broad shoulders swaying as he stalks down the aisle…

Michel’s Review

The moment I opened I Hate You by Ilsa Madden-Mills I was hooked. The first scene starts with Charisma Rossi making a point and standing up for herself after Blaze Townsend completely humiliated her. She’s wants to prove to Blaze  that it doesn’t matter if she isn’t his type. As a matter of fact he’s “not her type” and never will be. Why is he making it so difficult to ignore him when all she really wants to do is go home, raid the frig, and watch Big Bang Theory.

Blaze Townsend is one of the star players on the football team. His Hollywood good looks,  excessive charm, and southern gentleman manners has every girl on campus willing to drop their panties. He’s determined to keep relationships with the opposite sex simple with a past due expiration date. He has to focus on football and make it into the draft for the NFL.  Charm Rossi is making that impossible to focus with her sexy curves, sassy attitude, and smart mouth. He never dated a girl like her and she has gotten under his skin.

They say there is thin line between love and hate. While Blaze and Charm are trying to cross the lines their personal lives are imploding. Charm’s future internship has been revoked and Blaze hasn’t made the list for the draft. They are both falling victim to their own personal insecurities rather than depending on one another for love and support. Once they figure it out… Holy Hotness on a cracker… get out the fans and buckets of ice. These two are burning up the pages.

What I loved most about this book was how vulnerable each character was. Blaze’s past broke my heart into a million pieces. I could understand why he was so driven to succeed in football. Charm’s family dynamics caused many of her insecurities as well as the “Fat Girl” label. Her trust issues are valid.

When all was said and done both Blaze and Charm found what they needed most. Their love for one another was their greatest reward.

This book kept me captivated from beginning to end. I could not put it down and fell hopelessly in love with their story. I experienced so many emotions and cried for both of them. In the end we all got our HEA. Blaze and Charm found their forever. I closed the book with a big smile and full heart.

I highly recommend I Hate You by Ilsa Madden-Mills.

Having your friends commandeer your dating profile is kind of like picking a scab. It sounds like a good idea at first, but it ends up really messy and will probably leave a scar.

Part of that particular messiness is the fact that I trusted my friends. Now, I actually have to date the guy who happens to be the polar opposite of my type.

Everyone says, people are more than what you see. Which is fine, but in my case, all I see is a cocky bastard wrapped in tattoos.

Unfortunately, he’s a little more perceptive than I gave him credit for. He knows I don’t want to date him. He also knows my friend’s stipulations, and that I’m stuck in this little arrangement.

Also, because he sees himself in a top-of-the-food-chain kind of way, he’s going to take full advantage of the situation. To my detriment, I assure you.

My take-aways from this colossal disaster are twofold. One, never trust your friends. And two…

Never date Gavin Rhodes.

For fans of Christina Lauren and Lauren Layne comes a delightfully sassy and sexy romance about a campaign manager who reluctantly works with the local Lothario to help revamp his image for the upcoming mayoral elections, only to discover that he’s hiding something that can turn both their lives upside down.

What’s a campaign manager’s worst nightmare? A smooth-talking charmer who’s never met a scandal that he didn’t like.

When Emmanuelle Peroni’s father—and mayor of her town—asks her to help rehab Cooper Endicott’s image, she’s horrified. Cooper drives her crazy in every way possible. But he’s also her father’s protégé, and she can’t say no to him without him finding out the reason why: Cooper and her have a messy past. So Emmanuelle reluctantly launches her father’s grand plan to get this Casanova someone to settle down with and help him lose his lothario reputation.

Cooper Endicott wanted to run for Mayor, but he never wanted the drama that went with it. Now that he’s on the political hamster wheel, the other candidates are digging up everything from his past. Even though he’s doing all the right things, his colorful love life is the sticking point for many of the conservative voters. He wants to win, badly, and he knows that if he wants any chance of getting a vote from the female population, he needs to change his image. The only problem? He might just be falling in love with the one person he promised not to pursue: the Mayor’s off-limits daughter.

A perfect blend of humor and heart, On the Corner of Love and Hate is the first in a new series from USA TODAY bestselling author Nina Bocci.

Michel’s Review

The Corner Of Love And Hate by Nina Bocci intrigued me. I love an enemies to lovers type of romance and was craving a bit more mature adult kind of relationship.

While the first trope was clearly present in this novel, the mature adult behavior kind of slipped through the cracks. I felt like the hero, Cooper, was a bit immature for a man clearly in his thirties. Not only did Cooper come across as immature but also came across as a slacker. It turned me off right away and while he had significant character growth, he never captured my heart. If I can’t fall in love with the hero then I find myself annoyed with the heroine for falling for him.

Emmanuelle had her own issues and I completely understood her frustration and resentment towards Cooper. It was completely validated. Rather than expressing herself in a positive, direct manner to Cooper she lets her issues fester.

When the two finally started to really communicate and express their real desires it was hard to get on board with their romantic relationship. The animosity, push and pull that I love in enemies to lovers romance lost some of it’s oompff because of the characters personalities. I never felt the chemistry between them. It was more of a slow building romance rather than a intense burn.

Honestly this book has potential and I think this will appeal to readers who like more of a generic type of romance. Although this book didn’t quite capture my personal taste I think other readers will really like it. The writing is well executed and flows well. I am looking forward to see what comes next in The Hopeless Romantics Series.

The fifth book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Field Party series—a southern soap opera with football, cute boys, and pick-up trucks—from USA TODAY bestselling author Abbi Glines.

Ryker Lee is finally enjoying his senior year—he has great friends, hangs out with hot girls, and is on track to get a football scholarship that will set him up for college. Despite this, a small part of him wonders if there’s more to life than parties and meaningless hookups—and if football even means as much to him as it does to his fellow teammates. And when he meets the new girl at school, his world totally changes…

Aurora McClay is new to Lawton. She’s grateful that her twin brother, Hunter, is star of the football team and can help her adjust to her new school, but she’s not grateful at how overprotective he is over every person she meets. Just because she is deaf does not mean people have to treat her differently. When she meets Ryker Lee, the two of them spark an instant and intense chemistry, one that proves to be controversial not only because of Ryker’s reputation as a player, but also because of Aurora and Hunter’s father’s bigoted views about who Aurora can and can’t date.

Aurora and Ryker know in their hearts that they are meant for each other. But can their relationship endure the turmoil of rumors and prejudice?

Michel’s Review

I always look forward to August because Abbi Glines usually releases a new book in The Field Party series. I love the high school “Friday Night Lights” themed books and Abbi’s Field Party series stands out among the others.

Making A Play is quite different from the other books in the series because it deals with physical issues, social issues, and contemporary peer issues.  It gives an honest insight into today’s high school environments as well as small southern town life.

Aurora McClay has moved to Lawton to live with her father and twin brother after their mother gets remarried and moves away. She had attended a high school for the deaf but now finds herself entering a mainstream high school that her brother attends. She’s excited but knows it’s going to be challenging. The one thing she never imagined would happen was that her brother would be extremely overly protective to the point of being obnoxious. She never expected to meet a boy that would capture her complete attention on the first day of school. It’s too bad this boy is completely off limits as far as her brother and father are concerned. Ryker Lee not only has a bad reputation as a player but also has the wrong skin color. Her heart wants what it wants and love always finds a way.

Ryker Lee is looking forward to his senior year. He never imagined he would experience love at first sight let alone fall for just one girl. It’s not his style until he meets a different kind of girl, Aurora McClay, his teammates twin sister. It doesn’t matter if Aurora is deaf, he will learn to sign. It doesn’t matter if her brother hates him, he won’t back down. Getting past her father’s overbearing control and racist attitude is a challenge. No obstacle will turn his heart away.

They both will have to withstand all the obstacles in their paths but both are strong, determined individuals who know what they want. They want each other.

Abbi Glines did a fantastic job with this book. Ryker and Aurora’s relationship was based on respect while still being sweet and romantic. I am in awe how Abbi delivered the story which dealt with a physical handicap and sensitive social issues while staying on a neutral playing field. This made Aurora and Ryker come to life in a much bigger way.

Making A Play by Abbi Glines is the best book in the Field Party Series. Read It!

“See you on the other side.”

Laya Marston’s husband, Cameron, a daredevil enthusiast, always said this before heading off on his next adventure. He was the complete opposite of her, ready and willing to dive off a cliff-face, or parachute across a canyon—and Laya loved him for it. But she was different: pragmatic, regimented, devoted to her career and to supporting Cameron from the sidelines of his death-defying feats.

Opposites attract, right?

But when Cameron dies suddenly and tragically, all the stages of grief go out the window. Laya becomes lost in denial, living in the delusion that Cameron will come back to her. She begins posting on his Facebook page, reminiscing about their life together, and imagining new adventures for the two of them.

Micah Evans, a young and handsome architect at Laya’s father’s firm, is also stuck––paralyzed by the banal details of his career, his friendships, and his love life. He doesn’t know what he’s looking for, only that there is someone out there who can bring energy and spirit to the humdrum of his life.

When Micah discovers Laya’s tragic and bizarre Facebook posts, he’s determined to show Laya her life is still worth living. Leaving her anonymous gifts and notes, trying to recreate the sense of adventure she once shared with her late husband, Micah finds a new passion watching Laya come out of the darkness. And Laya finds a new joy in the experiences Micah has created for her.

But for Laya, letting another man in still feels like a betrayal to her late husband. Even though Micah may be everything she could wish for, she wonders if she deserves to find happiness again.

Written with Renée Carlino’s signature “tender and satisfying” (Taylor Jenkins Reid, author of Maybe in Another Life) prose, this warm and compassionate novel shows us how powerful the courage to love and live again truly is.

Michel’s Review

***2019 Favorite***

Every time Renee Carlino releases a new novel, she challenges her readers thought process by taking them on an emotional journey in a very different way. She takes a different approach of demonstrating the validity of every human emotion and how each individual copes with the emotions they are experiencing. Not only does she deliver eye opening situations that are emotionally challenging but also presents unique solutions that take her readers on a heartfelt, emotional journey. The one thing that is present throughout each novel is the power of  HOPE and healing through LOVE.

The Last Post by Renee Carlino is by far one of  her best works to date. Two very different people are dealing with paralyzing emotions caused by events in their lives.  Laya Marston is dealing with paralyzing grief after watching her husband die in a tragic accident. Their marriage was based on a passionate whirlwind romance that was still in the newlywed stages. Their relationship was fueled by their passion which made their love burn hotter. Laya is having a hard time letting go and is emotionally paralyzed by her grief. She can’t move beyond the immense sense of loss and heartbreak. Her grief has taken over her ability to rationalize and process her loss. She deals with her grief by posting on his Facebook page and leaving messages in his voicemail. While she knows it’s not rational or realistic, in her mind it keeps her husband alive. It gives her moments of hope until it doesn’t. Her family and friends are afraid she’s gone off the deep end and don’t know how to help her move forward in life.

Micah Evans is a smart, young architect who is stuck in his life. He works at a highly respected architect firm but is still in the level entry job he started after college. He still has the same college roommate and makes the rounds at the clubs on the weekends. Rather than growing up and making an adult life, he is stuck. He is suffering from depression and a sense of hopelessness until he meets his boss’s daughter, Laya. He sees her despair and hopelessness. I makes him realize he wants to help her. By helping her it gives him a sense of purpose and hope.

What starts out as a misguided and really weird kind of relationship evolves into something neither one knew they desperately needed. Finding your soul mate isn’t always about red- hot passion and whirlwind love affairs. It’s finding the person who sees exactly who you are and understands you completely without judgement. A person who gives their complete acceptance. A person who shares your pain and your joy. A person who defines your soul and cherishes it. Although Laya and Micah are complete opposites they are true soulmates.

The Last Post by Renee Carlino is a journey of love, friendship, and hope.

Try to beat him— If You Dare!

Who will win and who will lose?

Chapter Reveal:
BECKY

My phone rings on my bed, and I look down to see Deke written across the screen. My heart begins to race with excitement.

“Hey?” I try to say calmly, but my high pitch gives me away. I turn, placing my back to the door and bounce toward the windows. The falling rain making visibility nonexistent.

“What are you …?”

“Do you miss me, Becky?” he asks in greeting.

A cold chill runs up my spine at his tone. There was nothing affectionate about it. Just cold. Detached. “Of course, … I …”

“What if I said I wanted to see you?”

I swallow, and the hairs on my neck rise. “Deke.” I give a nervous laugh. “What do you mean? I, uh, I’d love to see you, but you’re too far away.” Thank God. He sounds like a serial killer calling his next victim. He’s probably drunk and playing some sick game with me.

“What if I told you I’m here?”

I whip around to face my bedroom door, my chest rising and falling quickly. “In Collins?” My voice shakes.

He gives a dark chuckle, and my stomach drops as I watch a man dressed in black jeans and a black hoodie move to stand in the doorway of my bedroom. His blue eyes look me up and down, taking in my half-naked body, but he shows no sign of interest.

When they reach mine, I hear him whisper in my ear. “Your bedroom.”

I drop the phone and run into my en suite bathroom. I slam the door shut and lock it. He begins to pound on it from the outside. “Stop,” I cry as I press my hands up against it, knowing he’s fucking with me. If he wanted in, that lock wouldn’t stop him. “Deke, please …”

The banging stops, and I flip on the light before taking a step back from the door. Tears sting my eyes and my body shakes. What the fuck is he doing here? In Collins? My bedroom?

Other than my heavy breathing, silence now fills the room. I still hold my hands out in front of me as I take another step back and bump into a hard surface. I gasp, spinning around only to come face-to-face with Cole Reynolds.

They tricked me.

The phone call was to distract me, allowing Cole into my bathroom. Where Deke knew I’d run. He had been covering the door, there was no other escape option for me. His emotionless blue eyes stare down at me. Cole has this way of making you feel cold deep down in your bones. Like death coming to collect your soul. He’s come to drag me to hell. To make me pay for my sins. My breath hitches and my heart hammers in my chest. “Cole …”
