I start to protest but then realize he doesn’t get it. He knows how much he is paying me. He sees the expensive clothes and jewelry I have on but has no clue they are from thrift stores and pawnshops.

“I’ll walk away.”

The chuckle he emits scrapes over my nerves and irritates them. “No, you won’t. You’re addicted to the power of it. Of knowing you can bring a man to his knees. Of the ability to use your body to get exactly what you want.”

“You don’t know a thing about me.”

But the ghost of a smirk that plays at the corner of his mouth makes me fear he just might. “You don’t have to be embarrassed by it, Vaughn. I get off on the same type of power when I’m in court. It’s a high. Something once you have a taste of, you only seem to want more of.”

“Don’t paint your experience on my canvas,” I murmur.

“Here we are,” he says, pulling my attention to our surroundings instead of to him. We’re standing outside the entrance to The Club, and every part of me deflates a little at the thought of having to go back inside with him.

Of having to play more of the part, when this, me getting to be a little more of myself, has been so unexpected and nice.

“Here we are,” I repeat.

We stare at each other, the shadows of the night playing over his face and reminding me I barely know this man and that I do, in fact, want to know him more.

“I’d be more than happy to drive you home—”

“But—”

He puts a finger to my lips. “But that’s too personal.” He steps into me so that we’re both in the shadows now on the broad sidewalk.

“It’s too personal,” I agree as I draw in the scent of him, the feel of his palms as they run up and down my arms. And for the briefest of moments I forget what I’m doing here and that he’s paid me for it because all I can think about is him kissing me. All I want is him to.

“Why don’t we go—”

His lips close ever so slowly over mine so that I have no choice but to sink into the kiss. A kiss that’s soft and tender when every other one we’ve shared thus far has been raging with a lascivious desire.

But not this one.

My body heats up nerve by nerve. Muscle by muscle. Sensation by sensation.

Until he leans back so his forehead rests against mine and we breathe in the same air.

“Good night, Vaughn.”

What?

My head snaps up as Ryker takes a step back, regret owning every part of his expression, including the desire warring in his eyes.

“I don’t understand.” Flummoxed, I stand where I am and just watch him as he takes another step back and points to the taxi pulled up to the curb at my back.

“Your cab is here.” His smile is pained.

“But . . .”

He lifts a hand in silent goodbye before he turns the corner, leaving me staring after him as the taxi driver ushers me into the cab.

Tears sting my eyes as he pulls away from the curb.

Ryker just gave me exactly what I asked for—no sex—and yet every part of me is confused by it.

Because I want him.

And now I’m not exactly sure what I’m supposed to do about it.

Resist is the first book in the Wicked Ways Series by the fabulous K. Bromberg. Like her other books, K has a way of telling a story that captivates readers early on and continues to surprise them throughout this book. Her development of characters is always genuine, providing depth, personality and humanly quirks which makes her characters so raw and real for readers. This story reminded me a lot of her earlier work with Driven, in that it captures human grief and acceptance to unfavorable life circumstances. Real life isn’t always pretty and sometimes darkness shadows light which we experienced in this story.
Vaughn Saunders has been living a double life for the past 6 months. By day she is a successful Madame of an escort service, and by night a waitress at a swanky upper-class club trying to pay down mounting medical debt and bills and doing what needs to be done in order to gain custody of her niece.
Ryker Lockhart is a handsome haughty divorce lawyer. Successful in his career, he lacks any real personal connection in his life. Unwilling to settle down but needing to feel the void, he finds himself seeking services in Wicked Ways Escort Service in order fulfill his “needs.” Little does he know, he will come face to face with the one woman that will give him a run for his money, the chase he so badly seeks and maybe the connection he doesn’t know he’s been missing.
The chemistry between Ryker and Vaughn was off the charts! Both are very strong-willed characters so the push and pull between fighting their want for one another was captivating to watch as their needs slowly consumed them both. When they did succumb to their desires… it literally heated up the pages!

Cowboy In Colorado by Jasinda Wilder is the second book in the 50 States Of Love series. I read this book in one night and thoroughly enjoyed this angsty romance between two very strong- willed alpha personalities fighting against the inevitable outcome….love.

Brooklyn Bellanger has to prove her professional capabilities to her father before she can take over the multi-billion Bellanger Industries. Her first step is to take BRED, the real estate department to the next level with fresh, exciting new projects. She has been given her own team and complete freedom. Finding the perfect project is going to be a challenge. When one of her team members suggests an authentic, rustic themed western town and getaway, Brooklyn is intrigued. Her new business venture takes her to Colorado to buy a town. First she will have to make an offer to the Auden Family Ranch to purchase Auden Town. Next she has to face their stubborn ranch business manager W.H. Auden and propose her deal.

Will Auden has no intentions of dealing with a city-slicker who wants to swoop in and change their lives. The ranch has it’s own problems and he is too busy with their horses to make time for her nonsense. It doesn’t matter if she is drop dead gorgeous or has a natural ability with horses. Brooklyn isn’t a quitter but she knows when to move on. She’s moving on from the rustic town idea. She’s moving on from Will Auden no matter how much it stings her pride. She knows what she wants and it is not an unyielding man.

I absolutely loved seeing two very strong willed individuals go head to head. I also loved how beautiful it was for both of them when they finally surrendered to their hearts.

I can’t wait to see where Jasinda Wilder takes us next in the 50 States of Love but for now I’ll be content with a Cowboy In Colorado.

I highly recommend this reading adventure with Cowboy In Colorado by Jasinda Wilder.
