About LISTEN TO ME:

In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

Excerpt

The girl, Britt, is moving around the small space, clearly at ease with her surroundings. She opens a laptop and sits at a desk wedged in one corner. “You can sit.” Britt points to a second chair.

Good. For a second I thought I was going to be forced to get up on the treatment table. I’m not in the mood to be a guinea pig today.

That’s a lie. I don’t really care what the trainers or specialists do to me as long as they make me a better fighter. It’s the girl that bothers me, not the thought of being under a microscope. This is the only woman I’ve ever met who isn’t instantly and irrevocably afraid of me, and the only one whowho has me tempted into thinking I could have more. More than a filthy, dirty fuck to release tension. More than someone to use for a few hours of pleasure.

Britt’s obviously already damaged. As much as I’d love to peel back those layers, I don’t want to give her a chance to dig out my own psychological scars, the nightmares hidden beneath a baggy hoodie and a cold stare. If I do, Britt may never recover from what she finds.

“I’m sorry,” she apologizes, tapping on her computer. “I only found out you were coming last night, so I don’t have much information and haven’t reviewed your medical file.”

She’s so quiet, I strain to hear her. When I don’t respond, she cocks her head and her eyes flick up to mine. Shit. I duck down so she can’t get a good look at my face.

Fucking coward. She’s going to find out at some point, idiot. Why delay the inevitable? She’ll see the same thing everyone else sees when they look in my eyes… nothing, a monster, a killer.

For the first time in ten years, the thought disturbs me.

Heather C. LeighI’m the author of the Amazon best selling Famous series. I like to write about the ‘dark’ side of fame. The part that the public doesn’t get to see, how difficult it is to live in a fishbowl and how that affects relationships.

I was born and raised in New England and currently live outside Atlanta, GA.

I love the Red Sox, the Patriots, and anything made of chocolate (but not white chocolate, that doesn’t count).

My favorite authors are Dan Wells, Tina Reber, Ken Follett, and Stephen King. Happy reading!

Murderous thoughts. That is what I had once Isabella walked through the door and revealed to me who she was. I needed an escape. An escape from my thoughts, an escape from the hurt… an escape from… him.

I was a broken woman, but I was never going to break my resolve. I grew up being a fighter, because I had to. No man could ever bring me down… Not even Luca.
But, I had to admit, I never thought my heart would break as much as it did that day. Of course, I fled, but I was a fool to think he would ever let me go. He always told me I was his… no matter what the cost. He was determined to keep me, regardless of the lengths he had to go to reach his goal. He was like a moth to my flame, a tattoo carved into my heart. I could never escape his pull.
I may have evaded him, but I knew it was just a matter of time. However, once he did catch up with me nothing could have prepared us for what happened next.

GET TO KNOW YOU INTERVIEW
Tell us is there anything about you that
people don’t already know?
I love shoes. My
husband calls me a centipede.
Roughly 11 years ago
I met my sister for the very first time. The reunion was a rather emotional,
but fulfilling one.
Your books are so emotional. How long does
it take for you to be able to get the characters out of your mind and move on
to the next?

Sometimes it’s hard to get your head out of a book once it’s finished. Deviant
actually made me ill. My blood pressure went down so much that I almost fainted
at work once. Not nice. 😦 In the end I had to take a deep breath and move onto
the next project. I like to build scenes up in my head before I start writing
them down. It makes it easier to flow that way.

Are the names of the characters in your
novels important?
Sometimes the hardest
part of writing a book is choosing the character’s names. I think they’re
important because a good, strong name can have an inpact on the way you feel
about the character. That’s what I feel, anyway.

What are the most important attributes to
remaining sane as a writer?
Coffee, sweets, and
wine. Did I mention wine?

What is the most demeaning thing said about
you as a writer?
I tend not
to dwell on the bad things that are said. Luckily, I haven’t had
anything too bad that it has stuck with me. I count myself extremely lucky
to have met some wonderful readers out there. I welcome reviews good and bad,
and also welcome any people who have reviewed my books negatively to contact
me. I seriously don’t bite… well, not that much. 😉

How do you react to a bad review of one of
your books?
If they’re
constructive, I welcome them. I once had a reviewer rate a book of
mine 3 stars and emailed me to apologise. I had read the review and told
her there was nothing to apolgise for. The review was constructive and well
thought out. It’s these reviews that aid me in becoming a better writer.
It’s the “Bash the Author” reviews I get upset about. There’s just no
need for it.

What was the hardest part of writing your
book?
Maintaining a flow.
Sometimes I will sit there and my mind goes completely blank. I hate it when
that happens. 😦 The other part is writing scenes and then looking back on them
thinking, are people going to get bored reading this?

Did you learn anything from writing your
book and what was it?
That I can write
emotionally difficult scenes. In Luca 2, something happens to Clara that hit a
nerve with me. I cried writing it, and then cried reading it over again. I
didn’t enjoy it, but if other people have the same emotions that I did
then at least I know I have done the best I could regarding that scene.

Is there a message in your novel that you
want readers to grasp?

I suppose only that in life you have to be grateful for the things that you
have. Sometimes bad things can happen, but when it does you have to think to
yourself that there are people in a much worse situation than me.

Have you ever read or seen yourself as a
character in a book or a movie?
Not really. I have
read and watched characters in a movie and thought, I wish I could be like
her.
I love the covers. What made you choose
them? What gave you the idea?
I went hunting for a
hot Italian model. I found one and asked my designer if she could work her
magic. I explained that having the castle somewhere on the cover was important,
as it was important to my character.

Who designs your covers?

I don’t think I want to tell you because I want to keep her to myself! 😉 Only
joking… Well, maybe just a little bit.

Kellie Dennis from
Book Cover by Design. She’s awesome!

Describe in 5 words, your writing:

Drama, dark, angst, romantic and erotic.
When you were a child what did you want to
be when you grew up?
A managing director
of a crisp factory.
Only joking. Funnily
enough I wanted to be a writer. I used to write poetry when I was 17. I even
had a story of a young girl that moves from the country to London and works for
an older CEO. Romance blooms, of course. In the end I never started it.
What do you use to write your book?
A lot of imagination.
I think it’s imperative when starting a new project. I start the kettle for my
coffee or tea, fire up my laptop, and start tapping away.

Do you listen to music while you writing or
reading?

Once in a blue moon I may put some music on just to have some background noise.
Mostly, though I like peace and quiet whilst I’m writing.

Tell us your latest news?
I’m currently writing
another stalker book called Scars. I’m quite excited about this one.

What book are you reading now?
I read Grey recently, so now I’m on Fifty Shades Darker.

Do you have a
nickname?
Not really. My
husband calls me James, which I find quite sweet. I just think of it as a
shortened version of Jaimie.

What are your pet peeves?

I can be a little OCD about certain things. Toilet paper being put on the
holder correctly, for one. 😉 The others are opened cupboard doors or
drawers. I hate that! I also can’t understand how many socks we go through as a
family. I seriously put on about ten pairs every time I do a wash, lol.
Considering I have to do a wash at least twice a week, that’s a lot
of socks.
I’ll shut up now.

Do you ever write naked?
Lol, I think my hubby
would like me to, but no.

What is your favourite Starbuck’s/coffee
shop drink?
I don’t have a
Starbucks where I live. 😦 Normally I have my coffee black.

What’s your favourite fruit?
Strawberries…
preferably dipped in melted chocolate. Hmm…

What’s your favourite tv show?
Suits.

What’s your favourite genre?
Romance

One of your favourite quotes
The enemy of my enemy
is my friend

Do you enjoy giving interviews?
I’m enjoying this one, so yes. :

Five Fun Facts:
I’m a bitch
I’m a lover
I’m a child
I’m a mother
I’m a sinner
I’m a saint
Oh wait, that’s 6!
Actually, you can scrap bitch. I’m not really a bitch. My husband may disagree
with me at times on that, though. 😉
Thank you so much for taking part. We can’t
wait to read more work from you.

LUCA (YOU WILL BE MINE) EXCERPT

Prologue

Luca

Picking up some random chick from my club, I took her to one
of my many apartments. This one was reserved for one thing and one thing only: fucking.

She was brunette, curvaceous, and had the most gorgeous tits
I’d ever seen … But that wasn’t why I’d brought her here. I brought her
here because I wanted to prove a point. Today was the day I laid eyes on the
most beautiful angel I had ever seen. It was only a picture, but I couldn’t get
her image out of my damn fucking head.

Watching this woman strip in front of me should have been a
turn-on, but she did nothing for me—not even a twitch.

“Hmm, Luca, you’re so sexy. Let me take care of you.”

Hovering over my cock, whoever she was started licking and
sucking me hard. I was going to push her away and tell her to fuck off, but
then I closed my eyes, and the image of that girl came into my head. Clara.

Holding onto that image, I began to grow hard inside her
mouth. Imagining it was Clara made my dick stiffer than it had ever been.

Random Chick moaned her appreciation as she sucked harder. I
should have fucking loved this, but all I could think about was her.

Grabbing a condom from my bedside table, I pushed this girl
off of my cock. I still wanted to prove a point. I had always loved sex. If I
could just feel this random woman’s pussy, then I was sure I could forget her.

I placed the condom on my cock and hissed when I felt the
urge to fuck her raw. “Fucking sit on me—now.”

Smiling, she did as she was told and started riding me hard.
I closed my eyes again, and straight away, my mind went back to Clara.

Why can’t I get her out of my fucking head?

This woman’s body was perfection, and yet she was doing
absolutely nothing for me. I tried grabbing her hips and gaining control as I
pulled her down on top of me. Nothing—not a damn thing. She may as well have
been jumping on top of my stomach instead of my cock.

It wasn’t long, though, before her moans of pleasure echoed
around the room. I knew her orgasm was coming quickly as she sped faster and
moaned louder than ever before. Once her spasms died down, I shoved her off of
my cock.

“Luca, what the fuck? Baby, you’re so fucking good. Let me
make you come now. I can suck you again if you want?”

Shaking my head, I just wanted her out. “No. Just leave.”

“But—”

“No buts. Get the fuck out!”

Grabbing her things, she stomped across the room and quickly
got dressed. “Arsehole!” she shouted before slamming the door.

Fucking hell! What was wrong with me? This Clara seems
to have possessed me. No other woman has ever possessed me like this woman
has. Her picture practically screamed at me to touch her … to feel
her … to caress her.

Still lying on my bed—and still hard as fuck with this
condom on me—I started to touch myself. I closed my eyes, and again, straight
away, her image came into my head.

I pictured myself taking her and making her mine. The
thought made my dick come to life like never before. My movements became faster
and my breathing heavier as I imagined thrusting myself inside this woman I
hadn’t even met … yet. It wasn’t long before I felt it: that blissful
intensity permeating my whole body. That feeling which was like no other,
radiating through me as I hurried to find my release.

Seeing her through my closed eyes, I started pounding faster
and harder. A sound escaped my lips as I jerked and bucked underneath my hand,
thrusting my release as hard as I could into the condom.

What the fuck was wrong with me? Why couldn’t I get her
out of my fucking head?

After my breathing calmed, I took the condom off and went to
have a shower. Feeling the warmth hit my skin, I closed my eyes again, and
again her image filled my head.

Slamming the wall with my fists, I came to a sudden
conclusion. It was something I’d always known I was going to do—deep down—from
the moment I saw that fucking picture.

That’s why you offered Trudy a way out, you silly fuck. You
knew then that you had to have her.

I turned the shower off and grabbed my towel. The decision
had been made. I was going to go to Clara Murphy, but first I wanted to see
just how tough she really was.

With my mind made up, I smiled; excitement was growing with
every thought which passed through my head. I was going to go to Clara Murphy
and sort out this little obsession of mine once and for all. I knew all I had
to do was see her and my mind would be made up for me. I would either fuck her
until she was out of my system—or I would make her mine.

Getting dressed and ready to leave, I already knew in my
subconscious what the answer was going to be.

I’m coming to get you, Clara Murphy. So, you had better be
ready for me. You will be mine, and there isn’t a damn fucking thing you can do
to stop me.

LUCA (BECAUSE YOU’RE MINE) EXCERPT

“So, Giovanni, do you live in Sicily?” I thought it best to
change the subject. Even I felt we had entered into a pornographic movie all of
a sudden.

Giovanni’s reluctant gaze pulled away from Natalie and
returned to me. “Yes. I run things there. I did spend a lot of time in
England, though. I studied here before moving back several years ago. Luca was
always set to run things when he was older, but when he left, it
was up to me.”

I frowned. “Were you okay with that?”

Giovanni looked at Luca with a playful smile. “I’m
comfortable with the fact that I’ve done a much better job than Luca
could ever do.”

Luca suddenly growled. “As I said before, you’re not family
enough to prevent me from shoving your own balls down your throat.”

I waved my hand in front of him. “Just ignore him, Giovanni.
I do.”

I felt Luca stiffen beside me. “I’m warning you. You know
what happens when you try to go against me.”

I looked up at Luca and smirked. “Oooh. I’m shaking.”

Alessandro suddenly started laughing, making Luca
angry. “What the fuck are you laughing at?” Alessandro quickly shut his mouth, earning
him a dirty look from Luca.

I slid off my stool and watched as Luca watched me. “Where
are you going?”

I moved past him and started walking. “I’m going to get a
wash, and then I’m going to get my local masseuse, Philippe, to give
me a massage. I think I need to relax.” I smiled inside, knowing that
hearing his name would make Luca’s hackles rise. I wasn’t going
to mention that Philippe was gay. Well, not just yet anyway.

“Who the fuck is Philippe?”

I walked forward a little. “I already told you. He massages
my troubles away from time to time.”

Luca’s nostrils flared. “When was the last time he touched
you?”

I placed my finger on my lip and pretended to ponder this
for a second. “Hmm… I think it was two weeks ago.”

Luca looked really mad. “Two weeks ago, another man had
his hands on you?”

I nodded. “Yeah, I think that’s about right. He’s very
good.”

“Where does this fucker live?”

I suddenly laughed. “Stop being a baby. It’s his job.”

He stepped forward again. “He’s not touching you again. I’ll
find him and chop his fucking hands off.”

I moved my finger back and forth tutting as I stepped back.
“Oooh, tetchy, Mr. Belatoni.”

Luca suddenly smiled. “You’re joking with me, aren’t you?”

“Are these two normally like this?” Everyone laughed at
Giovanni’s question.

“All the time,” Tony piped. “It’s their prelude to sex.”

I raised my eyebrow to Luca in challenge. I was always ready
for sex with him, but when he got possessive and angry like this, it just
made the fires rage even more. This was my control over him. “I’m all dirty,
Luca. I need to get very naked and very wet.” I pierced him with a heated stare, and
my heart rate picked up a notch as he growled in my direction.

I took tentative steps back, but kept my gaze on Luca. All
these hot men and Italian accents weregetting the better of me.

As my steps took me out into the hallway, Luca suddenly
placed his phone in Tony’s hand. “Hold my calls, Tony. I’m going to fuck-love
my woman.”

Excerpt

Loyalty, Duty, Honor, Respect, Courage, and Integrity… Those are six of the seven cores embedded into a soldier’s brain when you enlist in The United States Army.

I remember like it was yesterday, placing my hand on the bible, while holding my other hand high along with my head, turning my life over to protect my country.  Only, it wasn’t yesterday, it was eight long, tortuous, agonizing years ago.

My reasons for thinking agonizing have nothing to do with the Army.  I live it.  I breathe it.  My life is consumed by it because it’s all I’ve ever wanted.

It’s agonizing because here I stand in complete darkness as one of the first women to graduate from The Army’s Special Ranger’s School.  Agony may be a harsh word to use.  However, no one was more relieved than I was when the law was lifted a few years ago and women were notoriously approved to serve our country in day-to-day ground combat roles.  Our nation has come a long way in allowing equal rights to women.  It’s about fucking time.

For two months I trained, barely slept, and pushed my now well-defined body to the brink of exhaustion. My dream is now a reality and my right to be here is embedded into my soul.

My mental stability was pushed to the limits, physical strength tested to the point of pain so excruciating that I was ready to give up, surrender, and dare to show them weakness, but I never did.  I would’ve died first.

With the help of a fellow Captain, I pushed harder, became stronger, and passed.  Yet here I stand, ready and willing to throw my dream away, all for a simple quick fuck.  It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever thought about doing in my life and god help me, I can’t control it, nor do I want to.

I’ve been in the desert a little over a month now, lucky enough to have been given the same orders as that same fellow Captain who encouraged me all those months ago to press forward and prove to myself and everyone else that I could live my dream and become who I wanted to be.

Captain Beau Harris and I have been flirting, eye-fucking each other since we first re-connected in this shit-hole country.  Both of us pissing the time away while we wait for our Commander to arrive so he can deal out our orders.  I crave the day we get to go behind enemy lines and destroy a substantial military target.  It’s a mission that should have been started weeks ago. The higher ups have been tight-lipped and they’ve been pissing me the fuck off.

Hence, the reason I need sex.  I’m not a slut; in fact, I’m far from it. But hell, after training and now waiting for someone who should’ve already been here, I’m sexually frustrated.  My pussy needs attention.  It needs to be pounded, fucked, and filled with a great cock before I lose my mind.

So that brings me to core number seven… Selfless Service.  That’s the one I’ve mastered.  Everything I do is for my country or for my subordinates.  I don’t do anything for me, it’s just not allowed.  Well, tonight I’m feeling selfish.

I’m Captain Jade Elliott of The United States Army and I’m about to break every single one of the seven cores I pledged.

I tiptoed into the living room to get a couple of cookies from the kitchen. I noticed that Ash had left the drapes open and it gave me a chance to study his beautiful face, younger and softer in sleep.

But he wasn’t asleep, and I froze.

He was stretched out on the couch, his bare chest almost luminous in the glow of the street lamps.

One hand rested on his chest, but the other…

The thin sheet was pushed down to his thighs and he was stroking himself. His long fingers that had massaged me so thoroughly earlier in the evening were firmly grasping his hard dick and working it up and down, his thumb sweeping over the wide head. His eyes were closed, his mouth slightly open, and his breaths were quick and shallow.

I knew I should turn around and go, leaving him alone in this very private moment, not watching like some creepy voyeur. But I couldn’t. I was mesmerized by the sight of him pleasuring himself, his hand moving faster, his firm chest rising and falling rapidly.

He muttered something in his own language, and I could tell by the tightness in his face that he was close. And God, if it wasn’t the hottest thing I’d ever seen.

Michel’s Review

Readers can always count on Jane Harvey-Berrick to deliver an original, emotional, and entertaining novel that stands out in a flooded market of romance novels.  In 2015 she took readers on an adventure with the Traveling Series that featured the life of carnies.  Now in 2016 she’s stepped off the midway and leaped into the spotlight with her new Rhythm Series, featuring professional dancers.  The added bonus to this new series is that it goes beyond a romance series and steps into the world of suspense that turns it into a dark thriller.

The very first paragraph drew me into this story and I could not put it down until I finished the last word.  I was drawn into the bright lights of the stage and experienced the dreams of stardom right along with all the dancers looking for their big break.  Rather than becoming  shining stars, their hopes and dreams were shattered the moment they stepped off the plane in Las Vegas.  They are thrust into a dark, violent, and hopeless world where the mere thought of surviving seems bigger than all their dreams put together.  They have become victims in a heinous world.  A world in which there is no return.  A world where slavery is the only means of survival.

Aljaz Novak, other wise known as Ash, has trained as a ballroom dancer all his life. Dancing is more than a passion, it is his life force. Having the opportunity to come to Las Vegas as a stage dancer is beyond his dreams.  When he steps off the plane and is thrust into his new world, it is beyond his dreams, it’s the ultimate nightmare.  He has been duped along with other European dancers.  There is no show, no theater, and no starring roles.  He’s been brought to America to become a sex slave by the Russian Brava.  The girls that were brought over with him are disappearing.  He has captured the eye of a sick monster that wants to make him his personal slave boy.  Every means of escape are impossible.  They have taken his passport, clothes, money, work visa, and phone.  His only hope is to die with dignity.

Help comes from an unexpected girl.  A girl in a wheelchair that happens to intrude on a violent, abusive rape situation.  The escape takes them to Chicago, where her family resides.

Laney has become more than a savior.  She has become his best friend.  She has the determination and hope to help him regain his life back.  She wants him to regain his self esteem, his passion for dance, and the justice he deserves.  Along the way she becomes more than a friend and savior.  She becomes his reason for living.  She has become his personal ray of sunshine.

Laney has battled her disease all her life.  When she met Ash, he treated her as a regular woman rather than a cripple.  He accepted her for who she was.  He didn’t want to fix her, he only wants to help her realize her own dreams.

Together Laney and Ash should not make sense, but together they are perfection.  And just when they think they have put the nightmare behind them, the nightmare shows up center stage.

Slave To Rhythm was an emotional story that shows that hope and redemption come in very different ways.  The thing that makes it credible is the capacity to love with the whole heart.

This book was amazing.  I could not put it down.  I can’t wait to see who’s next in the spotlight of the stage in the Rhthym Series.

Jane Harvey-Berrick should receive a standing ovation for this book.

An hour later they stopped by the Glenn River, eight miles downriver from Ginger’s house and two from the distillery where Cain had partied last night.

“We should water them,” he said, reining in Thunder and dismounting with the ease of a lifelong horseman.

She reined in Heath, who nickered in protest, and grinned down at Cain who reached up for her. His hands lingered for an extra moment on her hips as she slid down the front of his body. Leaning her head back, she stared up at him, daring him to pull her closer, to kiss her, to admit that this whole “friends” thing was bullshit on fire. But, he clenched his jaw, cleared his throat and dropped his hands.

“Thanks,” she murmured, her voice husky in her ears as he stared down at her, his eyes flinty and dark.

Taking Heath’s reins with a grunt, he turned away from her, leading the horses to the river’s edge and leaving her to follow behind. She leaned down to pick up a flat stone and skipped it across the slow moving water.

“Not bad,” said Cain.

You were always the best.”

“Nah,” he said. “Woodman was better.”

“Nope,” she countered, picking up another stone. “Woodman was good, but you were better. Remember that Fourth of July that you skipped eleven times? Eleven times. It was a record.”

Satisfied that the horses were calm and drinking their fill, Cain leaned down and grabbed a rock of his own, skipping it over the dark water.

One-two-three-four-five-six-seven…

“Wow!” she said, clapping lightly. “You’ve still got the touch!”

He turned to her, grinning. “You always get excited about the littlest things. What’s it like gettin’ a kick out of everythin’, Gin?”

“What’s it like gettin’ a kick out of nothin’, Cain?” she asked, her voice full of sass.

“I’m gettin’ a kick out of you right now, princess.”

A charge zapped between them as the words left his mouth, and her breath hitched and held for just a moment, but she looked down and picked up another rock. She was enjoying today too much to go back to Awkwardland.

She skipped her rock, which sunk after three measly hops.

“Remember when you saved my Cabbage Patch doll from certain doom in this river?” she asked him.

He screwed up his face as her. “Wasn’t me. Must have been Woodman.”

“It was you!” she insisted. “Not Woodman!”

“Savin’ a dolly? Please. That has Woodman written all over it. I couldn’t have cared less if it drowned.”

“But I cared,” she said softly. “Which is why you saved it.”

“Fine. Have it your way,” he said, sitting down on a large rock near the water’s edge.

She sighed, squatting down to wash her hands in the clear water before looking back at him. “Why do you do that?”

“Do what?”

“Let Woodman take credit for all the good things?”

He shrugged, looking away from her, out at the water. “I don’t.”

“You just did. Twice.”

He sighed, giving her a long-suffering look. “If somethin’ good happened, chances were, it was Woodman’s doin’.”

“How do you figure?”

“He’s the better man, Gin,” said Cain, his eyes severe, his words deliberate.

She stood up slowly, turning her body completely to face him. “Do you really believe that?”
He looked away. “It’s the truth.”

“Cain. Cain, look at me.” Her words didn’t feel like enough so she beseeched him with her eyes too. “You’re just as good a man as he is.”
“Ha!” scoffed Cain, standing up and moving away from her. “Not in this life, princess.”

Just about everyone called Woodman “Woodman” except Gran and sometimes Cain. Gran insisted on calling him by his Christian name. Cain used “Josiah” and “Woodman” interchangeably with no real rhyme or reason that Ginger could follow.

“Rumor is you’re gonna marry Josiah someday,” said Gran, her sixty-something blue eyes merry. “But what do you say?”

Ginger giggled self-consciously, thinking about her grandmother’s question, something clenching in her twelve-year-old heart as she thought about marrying sensible Woodman and abandoning her wild feelings for his cousin, Cain.

“I don’t know,” she said, feeling her forehead crease in confusion.

“Or maybe you’re thinkin’ you want to marry…Cain,” said Gran softly.

Cain, with his jet black hair and ice blue eyes, appeared like a vision before her, and Ginger’s heart thumped faster. The way he’d run off to see Mary-Louise Walker this afternoon made her brown eyes spitting green with jealousy. The way he swaggered made her breath catch. Woodman was so predictable, so safe in comparison.

Then again, Woodman hadn’t exactly been predictable this afternoon, had he? He’d surprised her with the gift and even more with his words. His body had been hard and warm when he’d held her, the embrace awakening something new and foreign within her. Something she wasn’t sure she wanted. Something that didn’t feel safe and even scared her a little bit. She pulled her fingers away from the charm bracelet and faced her Gran.

“What do I do if I love them both?”

Her grandmother’s eyes, which had been mostly teasing, flinched, and her mouth tilted down in a sympathetic frown, which made her face seem so serious and sober.

“Choose, dollbaby,” said her Gran. “Someday you’ll have to choose.”

The same feeling that she’d had in the barn, when Cain had yelled, “Jump to the one you love the most, darlin’!” flared up within her—a fierce refusal to love one cousin more than the other, to give up one in lieu of the other.

Choose? Her memories skated back through a dozen years on McHuid’s Farm that had always included Cain and Woodman. When they were little children, they played together, swimming buck naked in the creek and racing over the green hills and pastures in impromptu games of tag. As the boys grew up, they started working with Cain’s daddy, Klaus, who was her father’s right-hand man, mucking out the stables and grooming the horses. She’d run down to the barn every day after her lessons to see them, working right along beside them until they were all covered in hay, dust and barn grime.

Though the Wolframs weren’t generally included in the McHuid’s active social life, the Woodmans were, which meant that in addition to seeing Cain and Woodman on the farm, she also saw Woodman at every holiday and birthday party…and they always managed to slip out unseen with some smuggled sweets for Cain.

They were the Three Musketeers of McHuid’s Farm and Ginger knew both boys as well as she knew herself—Cain’s smirking, hot-headed, impulsive ways, and Woodman’s level-headed patience, caution and kindness. Regardless of their differences, she also knew that as the only children of twin sisters, Cain and Woodman were much closer than most cousins. Genetically speaking, they were half-brothers, and while they surely liked to tease and torture each other, they wouldn’t hesitate to jump into front of a train to save the other’s skin either.

In Ginger’s mind, she envisioned them like two halves of the same coin that she held carefully in the palm of her hand.

She loved them both desperately.

Choose?

No, her heart protested. Impossible.

“What if I can’t?” she whispered, leaning back and resting her head on her grandmother’s comforting shoulder.

“Then you’ll lose them both,” said her grandmother softly.

Ginger’s shoulders fell, relaxing in surrender as she closed her eyes against the burn of tears.

“But don’t let’s think about that now, dollbaby,” said Gran, leaning her head upon her granddaughter’s, the constant tremble of her unpredictable body almost soothing to Ginger as they rocked side by side in the twilight. “You’re just twelve today. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you.”

EXCERPT:

I want Lee to know, no matter where she goes, I will find her.

At the thought of her betrayal, rage rises up and wraps like an iron cloak around my heart, threatening to crush any bit of humanity left there. I close my eyes and hold my breath until it passes.

And I see her as she was before everything that came after—that first day of business law class at Kellogg, nearly two years ago.

She was starting her first year. I was in my second. I was already seated near Angela Bagglio, who I had a passing interest in due to her loose family ties to the Delgado organization. Her brother was a wiseguy wannabe, little more than a glorified gofer within the Delgado machine. But I’d discovered, sometimes it was the smallest details that led to the largest victories.

When Lee Delgado sashayed into the classroom, I’d like to say I was unaffected. I’d like to believe I was in complete control of everything that happened then and after.

But I’d be kidding myself.

Her bright hazel eyes surveyed the room, and when they caught for a second as they passed over me, I felt a shift in gravity itself. There were times reading nuances in expressions and actions was all that came between me and a slug in my head. That hitch in her perusal of the room left no doubt she was aware who I was.

From that second on, I was helpless to take my eyes off her.

Her sandy brown waves cascaded over the shoulders of her cream-colored silk blouse to an open collar that hung loose, revealing a hint of cleavage. Her burgundy pencil skirt hugged the round curves of her hips and ass and ended above the knee, giving me a glimpse of a pair of toned thighs and calves. She had a killer body and knew it. I had to respect a woman who knew her strengths and wasn’t afraid to use them to her advantage.

She took a seat in my row, but on the opposite side of the classroom. I was barely coherent when the professor started lecturing. I couldn’t tell you the first thing he said.

As she listened, she lifted a hand and combed through her waves with her fingers, separating out a strand and twirling it around her finger. A rush shuddered from my tailbone up my spine to my brain, and even though I had no clue why, that was the moment I knew I wasn’t going to be able to stay away.

The rest, as they say, is history.

If she thinks she can hide from me, she’s got another thing coming.

Mob controlled gambling has always been a huge racket, with better payouts because we don’t pay taxes like the legal betting sites. Back in the day, bookies were involved and actual cash changed hands. Now nearly everything is electronic. Bets are collected directly from our clients’ online accounts and payouts are distributed back into them. Payout is calculated after each event based on outcome versus the spread. It’s one of the parts of my job that I truly enjoy. I’m always in the program, tweaking and modifying. But, suddenly, the week before Christmas, two days after Lee and I returned from our weekend in Aspen, I noticed the spread didn’t factor anymore and our payouts went through the roof. I thought maybe I’d screwed something up and tried to get into the program to check it. Ended up throwing my laptop against the wall when my pass code wouldn’t get me in.

It took me the next two days, and the fact that Lee wasn’t answering my texts or calls, to put together what had happened. Though I’m not sure exactly how she managed it, I know it had to have been her who hacked into my program and changed the payout ratios. I’ve looked at it from every angle and there are no other feasible possibilities. And it makes sense. I had an ulterior motive when we started hooking up, and I had no doubt she had one of her own. But as we got deeper into each other, things shifted and I lost focus. I let down my guard and gave her too much, and she took advantage of the opening.

I knew I wouldn’t be seeing her over the holidays because her siblings were all coming back to the family home in Wilmette, just outside of Chicago, for Christmas. It took me another day to decide I had no choice but to go there.

But when I got to the house, the place was swarming with cops and Feds, and yellow police tape was strung across the pillars at the front door. The reports the next day said it was believed the Delgados had fled to Europe after a “gangland style attack” on their home.

The online gambling leg of our business has been bleeding cash at the rate of nearly a hundred grand a month since Lee fucked with the program. Every month it gets worse as word spreads of our big payouts. The guy who designed and encrypted the program is dead; a casualty of my father’s wrath when he made the mistake of telling Victor he’d corrected a system glitch that had cost us a couple hundred grand over the first year of implementation. I’ve done everything I can to break Lee’s pass code, but considering the illegal nature of the account, and the fact that I couldn’t enlist anyone who might report back to Victor what happened, my resources to resolve the issue have been severely limited.

So I put my time and energy into another avenue. Finding Lee.

Like everyone else in Chicago, I assumed that my father was responsible for the contract on Lee and her family. I talked to his guys. Tried to see if any of them had a bead on the Delgados’ location. I couldn’t find anyone who was even looking.

So, as much as I dreaded it, I went straight to the source.

I was dead to my father. He’d made that clear. But that day, for the first time since I’d crossed him, Victor looked at me with pride in his eyes when he asked, “You purchase that special delivery for our friends up in Wilmette?”

And that’s when I knew it wasn’t us. It’s also when I knew I was a dead man unless I could find a way out of this mess on my own.

So I looked harder for Lee, dug a little deeper into the Delgado family tree. I didn’t find her, but I managed to stumble on some other useful information during my search. And then, finally, the stroke of luck that led me here: Rob showing up in Chicago.

I’ve been able to keep everything under the rug since she left, but underground betting has always been the Savoca business’s bread and butter. If Victor or anyone else in the organization discovers the hemorrhage of cash that our gambling ring has become, it’s my head my loving pop will want on a spike.

I told the guys I had some personal business in Vegas; gave Al a direct order to park his ass at my apartment and not to move until I got back. I took a flight to Vegas, and from there, traveled to Florida on an ID I pinched off of a guy we rolled in Little Italy for not making book. He’s dead now, courtesy of Al, so he won’t be divulging my alter ego to anyone.

My family doesn’t know this particular alias. They’d have a hard time tracking me. Once I find Lee, things should move pretty fast. But I have to find her first.

So here I am.

Suddenly, my body goes rigid. I can’t move at all, but I can feel a surge through my entire system. I can see it, taste it, smell it. My heart forces blood through my veins, warming my insides. As the blood flows, the muscles in my legs, arms, and chest flex.

“Sten? Are you all right?”

I try to focus on her face, but my vision is blurred.

“Hold on, Sten. You just need to ride it out.”

“What…” I can’t utter another word. My throat seizes up, and for a second, I am unable to take a breath.

Riley’s palm touches my face as she presses a sensor to my temple. My arm jerks, and I grasp her hand. I press it to my chest.

“Relax. Focus on your breath.”

“I can’t!”

She takes my free hand in hers and holds it to her body, right over her heart.

“Focus on me, then,” she says. “Feel my heartbeat.”

My fingers twitch. I can feel the steady beat in each fingertip. Closing my eyes, I count the beats. One hundred. Two hundred. Three hundred.

Minutes pass. I keep counting. Eventually, my body begins to adjust and my muscles relax. I become aware of not just her heartbeat, but of how close my hand is to her breast. My dick strains in my shorts.

I reach out with my legs, wrapping them around her waist and bringing her body toward my crotch. Releasing her hand, I reach up and grab the back of her head and use the other hand to push the collar of the lab coat out of the way. The blue of her blouse contrasts with her skin. It’s beautiful, enticing.

With one finger, I trace the edge of her collar, brushing over her skin. I can feel her heart beat under my fingertip, and I want to taste the spot where I’ve touched her. I look back to her eyes. She’s staring at my lips.

I bring us together, pressing my mouth to hers gently at first but then with more vigor. I can taste mint on her breath as my tongue slides over hers. I thread my fingers through her hair and tighten my thighs around her waist, holding her close to me. I trail my finger farther down her collar and spread my hand to cup her breast.

She pulls back, breaking the kiss.

“Sten, you’ll have to stop that now.”

“I don’t want to.”

“I know.” She touches the side of my face, running her hand over my rough cheek.

“I want you. I need you.” I don’t understand why I’m explaining myself. It’s clear to me from her scent that she wants this too, but she keeps pushing me away. She denies me as she denies herself.

Why?

When Sten wakes up in a laboratory without any memories, he’s confused and volatile. Dr. Riley Grace explains that he volunteered for the new program to create the perfect soldier. He doesn’t remember his past life, the war, or volunteering.  He has to take her for her word.

He has become the prime Specimen in this new program but something isn’t right.  He’s beginning to have memories and they aren’t of the same life they proclaimed he had.  To top it off he has become dependent on Dr. Riley Grace for more than sexual satisfaction.  She is the key to helping him regain control of his life once more.

Specimen is fast paced with an intense plot.  The characters, the pacing of the story, and vivid descriptions make this book seem like a movie.  I became engrossed in the story and could not put it down.  Shay Savage created a world that comes to life.

I highly recommend Specimen by Shay Savage!

After spending two hours outdoors getting my headshots taken by Finn, I slide into the backseat of the Uber with Finn, grateful to be back inside. He puts an arm around my shoulders and draws me to him. “Cold?”I should pull away. Once I have it, though, his warmth is impossible to reject and feels as necessary as breathing. “A little.”

He squeezes me closer. Moves his hand up and down my bicep. “You’re shivering.”

The driver looks at us in the rearview mirror. “You guys are a cute couple.”

“Thanks,” I say.

Finn arches an eyebrow, pleased—because she thinks we’re together, or because I didn’t correct her? I don’t even want to correct her. I’ve missed the look she’s giving us, the one a woman makes when she’s more envious than jealous. I get it all the time with Nathan. That feeling, coupled with the heater blasting from the front seat, leaves me slightly woozy.

We’re just like actors in a movie, I tell myself. This isn’t real. It doesn’t count. After a few minutes, the urgency to get warm lessens, and the door opens to another less pressing, but still basic need. Because that’s how my arousal feels—essential. The more it’s ignored, the fiercer it grows. I snuggle into his side. All it takes is his hand on my upper thigh to invite an assault of graphic fantasies. Finn shoving me down on the backseat because he can’t control himself anymore. Thrusting his fingers under the hem of my dress to find me ready for him. The lower half of my body aches with sudden demands.

“Some of those photos we just took were for me,” he whispers in my ear. He couldn’t have chosen a worse moment to tease me. My legs are jelly-like. “Does that make you mad?”

I check to see if the driver is paying attention. She must know I’m married. How can something so vital and concrete in my life be hidden? “What if I say yes?” I ask.

“I’ll delete them. If you’re sure it doesn’t . . . turn you on.”

I try not to pant. “Why would it?”

“Imagining me looking at them later.”

I turn my head. Our mouths are a breath apart. One more inch, and they’ll touch. Again. Those lips are the color of sunburnt rock but whisper soft. We’ve done it once. Would one more kiss hurt? I can’t stop the image of him looking at me, my exposed, white throat on his computer, his cock in a firm fist. It should disgust me. It makes my panties damp instead.

“No response necessary,” he says as the car pulls up to the curb. “I can read it on your face.”

 4.5 StarTracey’s Review

Sadie and Nathan Hunt have always had the perfect marriage. Really, that’s how people introduce them, and Sadie has always believed that they lived up to it. Until lately. Lately, Nathan isn’t the husband that he’s always been, and Sadie is left feeling alone and confused. When new neighbor Finn Cohen moves in, he and Sadie begin spending time together. A lot of time. Before long, Sadie is finding Nathan’s distance a little more tolerable, but when lines begin to blur, deciding what matters most will take everything she has.

This book absolutely wrung me out. I mean, the emotions, people. It was like a roller coaster; you’re hanging on for dear life, but can’t stop the ride because it’s that thrilling, that enthralling. That’s what reading SLIP OF THE TONGUE was like for me.

I had read previous books by author Jessica Hawkins, and enjoyed them, so was really looking forward to this story. Forbidden romance, possible love triangle, what wasn’t to like? Oh.My.Goodness, I am telling you, this book. I got immediately and completely sucked in, and believe me when I tell you that I read later than I have in forever just so that I could finish this book, because I could not put it down.

The characters are complex in SLIP OF THE TONGUE; Jessica has done a great job of creating a realistically possible situation, along with characters that seem more human and easier to relate to than not. There were elements that I liked and did not like in Sadie, Nathan, and Finn, things that made it understandable, though not acceptable, regarding the choices that they made. Some of my favorite characters were actually supporting ones, especially Sadie’s boss, Amelia, and Sadie’s brother, Andrew, and niece, Bell (she was hoot; she’ll be kicking butt and taking names in a few years, bet on it).

SLIP OF THE TONGUE is a book that I had waited for with anticipation, and I can happily say that it does not disappoint. This book is an emotional, realistic, sometimes gritty read, and gets a solid 4.5 stars from me. I look forward to reading more from Jessica in the near future, and wouldn’t mind seeing Andrew get his own story. Grab this one and read it. I feel certain that you will not regret it.
