Chapter 1

Marlowe

Ive planned this night for weeks, down to the last detail. I want it to be perfect. Bringing someone new into my private life is not something I do lightly, having learned the hard way over the years that celebrity has a dark downside that I go out of my way to avoid whenever possible. But Rafe is different. Weve been together for months now, and I feel ready to take this next step with him. In the dungeon thats accessible only to Quantum partners and our guests, I take a careful look at the items Ive set outa blindfold, a flogger, the smallest plug, a bottle of lubricant and a cock ring. Im starting him off easy until I can get a sense of whether he shares my appreciation for the lifestyle.

I have a feeling he will, if our vanillasex life is anything to go by. Hes endlessly creative and sensual in bed. When he whispers to me in French, I can nearly come from that alone. Its been a very long time since anything vanilla appealed to me, but then again, the lifestyle hasnt been doing it for me lately either. While Im satisfied by the sex I have with Rafe, I feel like it could be more, and thus the reason Im trying to add a little spice to an already satisfying relationship.

Before I met Rafe, I had confessed to my closest friends and business partners that I was feeling out of sorts and off-kilter. Spending time at the clubs we own here in LA and in New York City had become boring, especially since my buddies found love and more or less gave up the clubs. Getting naked in public lost its luster for each of them after they found the one.In our world, were always one tabloid photo away from disaster, so I get that they feel the need to protect their significant others from that kind of exposure.

We go to enormous lengths to protect the members of our clubs, including the requirement of a one-million-dollar entrance fee for new members and airtight nondisclosure agreements. But that didnt stop someone in Devon Blacks equally exclusive club from taking photos of our partner Jasper Autry that were later used to blackmail him. Were all a little gun-shy after that episode.

Rafe understands the celebrity culture because he works in our industry. As an executive for the company that distributes Quantum filmsand many othersin France, he travels frequently between Paris and Los Angeles, hobnobbing with celebrities and working deep inside the business. From the beginning, Ive felt comfortable being myself around him, because he understands the pressures I face. Its been a long time since Ive felt this way about a guy, and even though I can tell my friends dont love him, I do, and thats all that matters.

Or so I tell myself.

Truth is, their opinions matter to me, even if I wish they didnt.

Especially Flynn and Hayden, who have been my closest friends for years. Its so rare for me to be out of sync with either of them, let alone both, but from the outset, theyve been rather obvious in their dislike of Rafe. I wish I knew why, but they wont even give him a chance. Flynns wife, Natalie, and I talked about it over the holidays when we were all together for four memorable days in St. George, Utah, of all places.

As I light the candles in the dungeon, I think about that conversation as I have so many times since then.

Its not that he doesnt like Rafe,Natalie had said. Its more that he doesnt like him for you.

Why?Id asked and immediately hated myself for the question as well as the desperate-sounding tone in which it was asked. Im Marlowe fucking Sloane. What do I care if Flynn Godfrey or anyone else doesnt like my boyfriend? ExceptI care, and I hate that I care.

I could tell Nat chose her words carefully. Its just that he thinks you can dobetter. She cringed as she said that last word, and I realized Id put her in a terrible position by bringing it up at all. The guys had gone off to find a Christmas tree for Aileens kids and had grudgingly invited Rafe to join them. Thats what had led me to ask her what the fuck Flynns problem was with him.

Be careful what you wish for. Flynn thinks hes not good enough for me, which means Hayden, Jasper, Kristian, Emmett and Sebastian probably agree with him.

Does everyone feel that way?Id asked Nat.

Im not sure.Shed rolled her bottom lip between her teeth, which is a tellfor her. She knows but doesnt want to say. Fair enough. None of them like him.

Does it matter to anyone that I like him?

Yes! Of course it does. Thats all that matters. If he makes you happy, were happy. You know that.

Id eyed her skeptically. Im happy with him.

Okay, then.

Okay.

Wed changed the subject, but the uncomfortable conversation had stayed with me ever since. Natalie had tried to be diplomatic, walking a fine line between not betraying Flynn and trying not to hurt my feelings. Shed failed in the latter account. My feelings were hurt, and they still are. Its been five freaking years since I dated anyone seriously, so I sort of feel like the guys could at least try to give me a break with Rafe.

I glance at the ornate clock on the wall. Hes going to be here in fifteen minutes. Time to get changed and stop thinking about why my friends dont like him. They can go fuck themselves.

I remind myself again that theyre not in this relationship. Only Rafe and I are, and were the only two who matter. Im the only who needs to like him and trust him and love him. Its my life, and no one else is going to live it for me, no matter how much I love my friends. Theyre wrong this time, and I am going to prove it to them by making this relationship work.

Ive decided its time to bring Rafe into my lifestyle because I know we cant succeed long term unless I let him all the way in. Each of the guys has had to do the same with their significant others and did so with stunning success if their happy, dopey grins are any indication.

Thats what tonight is all about for Rafe and me. Taking that next step. Depending on how this goes, I might be ready for what comes next, whatever that may be for a couple juggling a transatlantic relationship.

Im nervous about tonight because Im not entirely sure how hell react to my desire to dominate him. But I wont know until I broach the topic with him. He already knows that Im adventuresome in bed, but he has no idea just how adventuresome I can be. Tonight, hes going to find out, and Im excited as well as nervous.

I dart into the womens changing room, take a quick shower and dress in one of my favorite outfitsa red leather bustier with a matching thong and sexy stockings with a flower pattern running through them. Ive cut myself short on time, so I put my hair up in a bun and go with a smoky cat eye for my makeup. By the time my phone buzzes with the text Im expecting from him, Im ready.

After donning a red silk robe and black stiletto Louboutins with the fabulous red bottoms, I give myself a quick once-over in the full-length mirror and take a deep breath, letting it out slowly. Here goes nothing

In the lobby, I press the button for the elevator and take it up one floor to the main entrance to the Quantum office building. Most of the people who work here have no idea whats in the basement. When the doors open, Rafe is facing away from me, looking out at the parking lot.

Hey.

Whyd you want to meet here?He turns to face me, his eyes widening when he sees me in the silky robe and heels. Is this some sort of office fantasy or something?

Not quite.I extend my hand to him. Will you come with me and keep an open mind?Hes absolutely beautiful, with thick wavy dark hair and brilliant blue eyes that crinkle at the corners when he smiles, which is often when were together.

He seems hesitant, but he takes my hand, links our fingers and kisses the back of my hand. I shall happily follow wherever you lead, darling.

Now imagine that said in a sexy French accent. Im not one to swoon, but that accent does it for me.

He watches as I place my palm on the scanner that opens the elevator to the basement. This all very cloak and dagger,he says as we descend.

Not really.

We step out of the elevator, and the first thing we encounter is a reception desk. This is where I have to ask you to sign a nondisclosure agreement that says you wont disclose anything you see here.

Seriously?

Very seriously. If you need a minute to review it, Im happy to wait.

Giving me an odd look, he takes the pen I hand him, scans the NDA that spells out the lengths the Quantum partners will go to in order to defend the privacy of everyone who steps foot in our clubs and then scrawls his signature on the line provided. Whats this all about, Marlowe?

Come with me, and Ill show you.

Taking him by the hand, I lead him through the double doors with our distinctive Q logo etched into the glass. To the casual observer, the big room we enter might be mistaken for a nightclub, especially now, when theres no one else here. On a regular night, the place would be pulsing with people, energy and sexual tension. Scenes would be unfolding on the three stages, and potential partners would be negotiating hard and soft limits in the various seating areas and at the bar.

What is this place?

Club Quantum.

How have I never heard of it?Before we met, hed been active in the LA club scene when he was in town.

Because its private.

Still, with you and your illustrious partners involved, how does it stay a secret?

You read the NDA. Thats how.

The face he makes indicates his skepticism that even an airtight NDA can keep the lid on anything in this day and age, and perhaps hes right. Didnt we learn that when Jasper was blackmailed?

On the far side of the big room, I place my hand on another scanner that opens the door to the dungeon. As we descend the stairs, I begin to feel seriously nervous. Am I doing the right thing? Will he understand? What if he doesnt? Can I stay with him if he doesnt get this or doesnt even try to get it?

Dont get ahead of yourself. One step at a time. Youve done this before, and its been fine.

Rafe stops short at the entrance to the dungeon. Holy shit. Are you fucking kidding me?

You promised to keep an open mind.A trickle of unease travels down my backbone as I begin to wonder if Ive seriously miscalculated.

He strides over to the table where I set out the implements of my craft and picks up the flogger, turning to me, his brow lifted and his mouth set in an expression I havent seen before. What the hell is this, Marlowe?

I normally love the melodic way he says my name, but theres no melody to it now. Theres something that frightens me as I realize that no one except for him knows where I am or what I had planned for tonight. Not even my assistant, Leah, who always knows where I am. As he stalks toward me, his blue eyes blazing with anger, I take a step back, furious with myself for being so stupid. Im thirty-five years old. I should know better by now than to ever put myself at the mercy of a man.

Ugh, theyre usually at my mercy, and I wouldnt have it any other way.

Stop.I hold up my hand to keep him from coming any closer to me. He doesnt stop. Rafe, I mean it. Take a pause.

Dont tell me what to do when youre springing this kinky bullshit on me months into our relationship.A vein in his forehead bulges as he spews harsh words at me. Why didnt you tell me before now that you want to be tied up and flogged and whatever else?

Hes spitting mad, and Im trying to figure out why as I think about what I should say.

Marlowe! What the fuck? You owe me an explanation!

This is why Flynn and the others dont like him. They could see he had this in him while I was too busy being besotted to see beyond the glossy surface, the French words of love and the romance of it all.

Hes played me for a fool, and the only thing I want now is to get as far away from him as I possibly can. Immediately.

Im sorry, Rafe. Obviously, Ive made a mistake, and Ill understand if youd rather not see me again.

Not see you again? Is that what you think is going to happen here?

Im not comfortable with the way youre behaving.

He doesnt like that, and I quickly realize Ive only made him angrier.

Isnt that rich, darling? Youre not comfortable with the way Im behaving. After spending months together, you decide to show me youre a kinky whore and you dont like the way Im behaving? He lowers his voice. You want me to beat you before I fuck you, is that it?

No,I whisper. Thats not it at all.

Then please illuminate me, because I dont get it.

The rebellious part of me, the part that fought and clawed her way to success in one of the toughest businesses in the world, rears up inside me. Fuck this shit. Im a Dominatrix. I wanted to beat you before I let you fuck me, but thats not what I want anymore. What I really want now is for you to get the fuck out of here and never contact me again.

His shock is apparent in the way his face loses all color and his lips go tight before he speaks again in a much lower tone. Thats it? After everything weve shared, youre going to dismiss me like Im some kind of servant?

Im asking you to leave.

Fuck you if you think youre going to treat me like Im nothing. He moves so quickly, I dont see it coming until my head snaps back and hits the wall behind me and my face explodes in pain that rattles my teeth. Then he grabs my hair and drags me across the room. I fight him with everything Ive got, but Im no match against him physically. He outweighs me by seventy pounds.

Before things go from bad to worse, I have the presence of mind to realize Im in big, big trouble.

Exclusive Excerpt:

The Feds are gone for now. Because they have what they need. The name of my captor, where they can find the bodies…if there is anything left of them. According to the news, the fire spread quickly, consuming everything in its path. Part of me hopes that they find something, though. Some bones, a couple teeth, anything to prove that they are truly dead. But most likely they will only uncover ash, which leaves me disappointed.

I figure I bought myself a few hours until the agents return to probe me for more information, to ask me the same questions a thousand different ways.

How did you escape?

I ran.

Why did you run?

The house was on fire and I just witnessed three murders. Freedom was through the front door and I took it.

Who shot Edward Gaskill?

His nephew, Matthew.

Where is he now?

I have no idea.

And that is the truth. I don’t know where Matthew fled to. I just hope that wherever he is, he stays there, free to live out his life. I’ll always be grateful for what he did for me, that in the end he had become the man he had always wanted to be.

Was there anyone else in the house?

Yes, Edward Gaskill’s housekeeper and his slave, Aubrey. They’re both dead.

“Okay, Tia. I need to check your vitals again.” I don’t turn to look at the nurse who just entered my hospital room. She has already tried to strike up conversation once by telling me that she likes my name because it rhymes with Mia, her daughter’s middle name. “Tia, we have trained advocates who you can talk to… to be a support…”

I tap out and peer at the world through my hospital window. I can’t listen to another nurse or medical professional talk about the supports and services I should take advantage of because I’m an assault victim. Or stomach the way they look at me, pitying me.

“I already met with psych. I’m fine.” I don’t mean to be a bitch, but I have reached my limit and that is saying something.

“Oh, that’s great!”

I spoke to the psychiatrist, not to purge and express my feelings and relive four months of hell, but to convince the doctor that I’m stable enough to be discharged. Because that is my only goal right now. To leave this hospital, this fucking state.

“You’re almost finished with your last sodium bag. You should be nice and hydrated. How does your neck feel? Still irritated? Do you need something for the pain? On a scale from one to ten, what is your pain level?”

My hand goes to my neck and I touch the raw, sensitive flesh. “I’m fine.”

A hospital is the last place I wanted to end up because I knew this would happen. The questions, the sympathetic stares, tests to determine if I contracted something while I was…away. For a second I wish I had caught something lethal, because then it would be over; the memories, the nightmares. I would never see their faces again when I slept. I could just fade away.

New Release + Excerpt + 5 Star Review: Before You by Marni Mann

Before You - BT banner

From USA Today best-selling author Marni Mann comes Before You, a contemporary romance and a devastating examination of the people we meet, the life we create, and the things we lose. Before You is LIVE!

Before You AMAZON.jpg

It was supposed to be a typical work trip. New York to San Francisco, window seat, exit row. Maybe a mimosa.

Then, seat 14B sat down. When our eyes met, the flight became anything but routine.

I could pinpoint the moments in my life where everything changed forever.

Meeting Jared on that flight was first.

Falling in love with him was second.

Discovering the secrets he kept was third.

Putting my broken self back together and forgetting what I learned would be difficult. Forgiving Jared would be impossible.

He said, before me, nothing mattered. But after him, nothing would ever be the same.

Excerpt

“Are you willing and able to help in the event of an emergency situation?” the flight attendant asked as she stood beside our row. She had appeared directly after the announcement that informed us that all of the passengers were now on board the plane to San Francisco and the pilots were doing their final preparations before Flight 88 pulled away from the gate.

“Yes,” I answered, and I should have gone back to the article on the housing market in lower Manhattan that I’d started when I was waiting to board. Instead, my eyes were on her.

The girl in seat 14A.

She had dark hair that went well past her shoulders, a patch of freckles under each of her eyes, and lips that were pouty and full. She wasn’t beautiful. She was exquisite.

And she had no idea at all.

In the forty-seven years I’d been alive, I’d learned something about women. There were those you couldn’t help but look at and those you just shouldn’t look at.

She was both.

That was rare.

“Yes,” she replied to the flight attendant, and then she looked at me.

Before all of the interruptions, she had asked why I was going to California. I finally answered, “Some work, some pleasure. And yourself?”

“Same.” Her eyelids narrowed. “Are you from Manhattan? I don’t detect an accent.”

I felt the paper in my hands and knew there was no way I could go back to it. Not yet at least, not with her fiery green gaze on me.

“When you’ve lived in New York for as long as I have, you tell people you’re from there. It’s easier.”

She laughed, and it caused me to keep staring at her. “I’ve been here a while, too, and I agree. Once New York becomes home, you seem to forget everywhere else you’ve lived.” She tucked some hair behind her ear. “Why is that?”

When I’d asked my assistant to book this flight, I hadn’t considered flying commercial would put me in a position for conversation, like the one she’d just started. I hadn’t thought much about the actual flight at all besides knowing I had to be on it.

But now that I was here, I had no idea what the fuck I was thinking.

I really shouldn’t be going to San Francisco at all.

I looked away from her to glance up ahead. The main door was closed, telling me it was too late to get off the plane. The only thing I could do at this point was get some air.

I excused myself, halfway to my feet, knowing we were minutes from leaving the gate and supposed to be in our seats, and I went down the aisle. “I’ll be quick,” I said to one of the flight attendants as she approached me, and I continued to the lavatory.

When I got inside, I locked the door behind me, guessing I had about thirty seconds before I heard a knock.

If I were in any other restroom, I would have washed my face, but I wasn’t going to do that with the water from a plane. What I needed from this tight, crammed space was to catch my breath.

Because all of it had been sucked out of me, and there wasn’t any air to be found in row fourteen.

Michel’s Review

I just started reading Marni Mann’s books in 2019 when a friend recommended I read When Ashes Fall back in January. I was very impressed with her writing and gift of creating an intriguing story. All of her books have very different kinds of subject matter and romantic themes. All of her characters are complex, the book plots are complicated with twists and turns that keep the readers captivated while turning the pages. By the last few chapters of the book she is wrapping it up with a shocking revelation which validates the happily ever after in a more sincere way. Marni Mann has become one of my favorite authors. I could not wait to read Before You.

Before You is a different kind of forbidden taboo romance. There is so much more than the older man/ younger woman romance, this is a story of FATE bringing two people together and not allowing them to escape their connection.

Billie Paige began her normal work routine when she boarded Flight 88. Little did she know that the handsome stranger sitting next to her would become her lifeline. She also didn’t know he would become her confidant, her strength, and the love of her life. Age didn’t make a difference, Flight 88 was behind them, and their future should have been soaring.  The only problem is Jared has been keeping secrets. Flight 88 was only the beginning of the nightmares which she and Jared Morgan share. Jared is hiding something more than she can handle.

FATE has a different agenda and will never allow their connections to be broken. They can’t change with Fate or their real destiny.

Marni Mann held me captive while reading this book. The element of horror, suspense, fear, heartbreak is all wrapped up in an unforgettable romance that eventually finds a happily ever after. The journey to the ending was a reading event!

I highly recommend reading Before You by Marni Mann!

With her heart literally in his hands, Celia will have to try and bargain with a devil.

Edward Fasbender is my captor.

Trapped on this island he owns everything on–including, it seems, me.

He told me he would break me, but I thought he meant in the bedroom. It turns out Edward is playing a completely different game.

And he won’t stop until he’s ruined me.

Slay Two: Ruin is the second book in the Slay Quartet. Slay One: Rivalry should be read first.

Excerpt:
“I don’t know if this is going to work if it’s only about me. I need to feel like you want this too.” My heart tripped in my chest. Of all the vulnerable moments he’d pulled from me, that confession was one of the most raw.

Instead of answering with words, he bent his head down and kissed me. It was slow, at first, his lips moving, not with caution, but with self-control. I sighed into it, opening my mouth for him, and his tongue slipped in, probing tenderly at first then more aggressively. His hand cupped my jaw, angling my face the way he wanted it while his other arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me flush against him where I was met with a very thick, very hard bulge.

“Does it feel like I don’t want this?” he asked, pulling back just far enough to speak.

“No. I can’t say that it does.” I wanted to say more, something that would make me feel less unguarded, something that would help me gain my footing.

But he was kissing me again, more eagerly than before, and the thoughts and doubts disappeared from my mind replaced by the captivating sensations of his teeth and tongue, nipping and licking along my lips, along my jaw, down my décolletage.

I was dizzy and disoriented when he finally pulled away so he could tug me toward the bedroom. After pushing the door open, he stepped aside for me to pass ahead of him. I walked in and gasped.

CHAPTER ONE

Saturday August 8th. Nabat Island in the Flores Sea, Indonesia.

Chief of the FBI’s Crisis Negotiation Unit, Quentin Savage, leaned against the bar near the exit, wondering how long before he could reasonably escape. Unfortunately, not only was he meeting an old Army friend for a quick drink but, having delivered the keynote speech at the closing banquet of this symposium, he was duty-bound to stick around for a while in case people had questions.

People always had questions.

They always wanted to talk to negotiators. They assumed negotiators possessed some secret spiel that enabled them to get their own way and influence others.

It wasn’t true—if it were, he wouldn’t be here.

It did take some special qualities to be a good negotiator. Patience was definitely a virtue, as was the ability to think on your feet and not get emotionally invested. And, sure, there were specific techniques to influencing the actions of others, but the single biggest factor to being a great negotiator was the ability to listen. To hear what people said, verbally and non-verbally.

Being a negotiator was like being a therapist, except the other person was almost always in crisis by the time the Bureau arrived on the scene.

Quentin glanced at his watch impatiently. He wanted to check on the latest updates regarding a female volcanologist who’d been abducted off a remote volcanic island in the Banda Sea a few days ago. He was so close to the location where she’d last been seen, he itched to fly out to examine the area for clues. But if this was a straight kidnap for ransom and the kidnappers heard about the FBI’s interest, they’d either jack up the price, or kill her to eliminate any larger potential problems.

He pushed her out of his mind. He had to retain some professional detachment, else he’d compromise his ability to rescue anyone. Burnout wasn’t something he courted, even if he didn’t have much of a life outside the Bureau. Not anymore.

He wasn’t exactly roughing it here in Indonesia. The hotel, a large old Dutch colonial that had been tastefully modernized, was pure colonial splendor, complete with that indolent atmosphere that catered to the supremely wealthy. But even in the cooler evening, with the trade winds blowing, the air conditioning units and ceiling fans struggled to keep up with a room this large and this full of people. Delegates lounged on rattan furniture, drinking and eating complimentary finger food served on silver trays by uniformed staff.

Quentin made a face into the contents of his glass.

The setup reminded him of when he’d been a waiter at a country club many years ago. He’d grown up in SoCal, one of five brothers, and they’d all pulled their weight to support their mom after their dad left them for a younger woman. Quentin found it hard not to notice the people who were supposed to disappear into the background, probably as he identified with them more than he identified with the rich elite, or with the politicians or powerful CEOs.

He received a government paycheck and the sort of responsibility that would make most of them choke. He knew his own worth, and it wasn’t measured in dollars or cents. It was measured in the lives of the people he saved and the prison terms of the criminals who failed to beat the system.

Quentin paid for two beers, adding a decent tip. He didn’t like crowds. Didn’t like taking time out of his busy schedule to give presentations, even though it might ultimately save lives. He really didn’t like being the center of attention.

Unlike some people.

Holy cow.

An elegant blonde goddess came in from the gardens. The woman wore a gold dress with a plunging neckline and spiked heels that had her towering over the locals and most of the delegates. She made her way to a group near the bar, catching his gaze as she glanced around. He’d seen her a few times over the last two days, although he hadn’t been introduced. Pity. He was pretty sure she was staying in the room next to his.

When she didn’t look away, he raised his beer in salute, and she raised her champagne flute in response.

“That’s Haley Cramer, in case you didn’t know.”

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

The door to Walker’s bedroom is wide open. As I approach, I try to think of what I’ll say when I wake him. But when I arrive at the threshold, I find him awake, sitting on the windowsill, gazing out at the night sky. He’s wearing nothing but a pair of jeans, and his dark hair is wild, as if he’d been tossing and turning before he got up.

I enter without announcing my presence, but a creaky floorboard does it for me. Walker turns his head slowly to watch me approach. He doesn’t seem surprised to see me in his bedroom.

I stand next to him and look out the window to see what he’s gazing at. The sky is pitch black and studded with twinkling stars of various sizes and colors. It’s not a city night sky, muted by light pollution. It’s a brilliant, shimmering cloak wrapped around the world, beckoning us to embrace the night.

When I turn away from the window, Walker is staring at me, a new quiet confidence in his eyes. The moonlight paints silvery streaks over his cheekbones, collarbone, and pectoral muscles. He looks beautiful enough to paint.

Taking a cue from the look in his eyes, I turn toward him to let him see all of me. His gaze skims over every inch of my body, stopping for a while on my breasts. Taking a step forward, I take his hand in mine and hold it for a moment. When his eyes look up to meet mine, I lay his hand on my chest, so he can feel my heartbeat.

The corners of his mouth turn up at the sensation of my pulse pounding against his fingertips. “You are real.”

New Release + Release Blitz + Excerpt + Giveaway: The Living Canvas by Pepper Winters

The Living Canvas
Pepper Winters
(Master of Trickery Duet #2)
Publication date: November 15th 2019
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

The second and final book in the Master of Trickery Duet!

“Must be brave, stubborn, and impervious to the tempers of loved ones.”
The first line hissed with history.

“Hours are endless, pay is non-existence, quitting absolutely forbidden.”
The second line ached with truth.

“Able to function on no sleep, refrain from running when times get hard, and be more than just a living canvas but a lover.”
The third thrummed with honesty.

“Other attributes required: forgiving, opinionated, and not afraid to tell me when I’m wrong. Must also enjoy being touched and kissed at any time of my choosing.”
The fourth glowed with promise.

“Call or email ‘YOUR HEART, HIS SOUL’ if interested in applying.”
The final made my future unfold.

The advert was so similar to one I should never have applied for.
A twist of fate that brought two destined people back together.
A job I would take in a heartbeat if the employer could offer such terms.
But I wasn’t free.
Neither was Gil.
Therefore, my interview could never happen.

EXCERPT:

“GIL…DON’T.”

He gritted his teeth, wrapping the rope tighter around my wrists.

“Stop it.” I wriggled and squirmed, trying to be free of him.

“Don’t make this any harder than it is,” he breathed, tying a knot and jerking me forward.

I fought against him, bracing against his pull.

His hand slipped on the rope, giving me a fraction of a second.

I spun and bolted.

I managed a few terrified strides before his boots thudded behind me.

He caught me so easily.

He spun me around, picked me up, and carried me to the podium. Big fat tears rolled down my cheeks, unable to believe what he’d done. In all the times he’d ever touched me, he’d restrained the power and violence he wielded so effortlessly now. He had a strength that controlled me with barely any effort whatsoever.

That alone sent my heart galloping uselessly in my chest. My back prickled with nervous sweat. My chest fluttered with anxious breath. And I moaned in disbelief as he plopped me onto the stage and kicked out my legs, forcing me to sit on the edge.

I sat with a jar, my teeth clacking together as I dared look up at the kidnapper I should’ve been afraid of but never suspected.

Excerpt

Jason had settled into a chair in the center of the shop, surveying the work going on around him. He’d already left once, returning with sandwiches and sodas for everyone. As the hours passed and he vacillated between returning messages on his phone and talking to the workmen he obviously knew, she grew more confused.

“Don’t you have somewhere else to be?” she asked him.

He raised an eyebrow as if to say, Really? “Nowhere more important. I want to make sure the work here is done correctly and this place looks exactly the way you want it.”

She appreciated his thoughtfulness, but he had to have better things to do than worry about her. “Okay, but I can handle that. I don’t want to take up more of your day than I already have. I can stick around until the guys are finished, lock up, and head home.”

He folded his strong arms over his chest, his olive-green Henley pulling tight over his muscles. “And do you think I’m going to leave you here alone after what you told me about your brother?”

She’d been pushing thoughts of Colton aside all day. “I have pepper spray on my keychain.” The words sounded ridiculous, even to her.

She was no match for her brother, and if he was strung out? He’d have a wiry strength she couldn’t handle. She knew that firsthand, memories of her hands trying to pull his wrists off her neck very clear in her mind.

“Okay, fine. I appreciate you making sure I get home safely.” She’d be a fool to fight Jason’s protective nature.

“You still don’t get it. But you will.” He shook his head, amusement warring with a more serious expression. “You’re coming home with me, sweetness. I’m not leaving you here or in that shitty walk-up with a crappy lock your brother could break with one good kick.”

“Hey! That’s my apartment you’re insulting!” And all she could afford.

“It’s only an insult if I’m wrong.” He studied her, as if daring her to argue.

“I can’t just move in with you!”

He sighed. “Fine. You need someone to vouch for me? We can call my partners. Or my sister. Or… Hey, Sam! Am I trustworthy?” Jason yelled out to the man who was just climbing down a ladder, her clean window staring back at her.

Sam strode up to them and looked from Jason to Faith and back again. “Best man I know. Take a look at this.” Reaching into his pocket, Sam pulled out his phone, then began scrolling through his pictures.

“This is my girl.” He turned the phone so Faith could see a picture of a grinning little pixie with a bright smile and a pom-pom hat on her bald head, no hair hanging down beneath the folded brim.

“She’s beautiful,” Faith said, sliding her finger over her face.

“And if it wasn’t for this guy introducing us to his sister, I don’t think my wife and I would have made it through the roughest parts of her illness.” He shoved his phone back into his pocket.

Looking up at Jason from beneath her lashes, she caught a flush on his cheeks.

“It just so happens I could help you, man. But I’m glad Sienna could do her part. She loves fundraising and doing anything she can for kids who’ve been through what she has.”

Faith would like to help her one day, when there was no danger following her around, she thought sadly. For now, though, she had to fight through her own problems and not bring them into other people’s lives.

“Thanks, Sam.” Jason all but dismissed his friend, who waved and walked back to the other guy helping him.

“So? Still think I’m a serial killer?” Jason asked her.

New Release + Blog Tour + Excerpt: Baking Me Crazy by Karla Sorensen

DB01-BANNER-BT-SBPR

“Friends to lovers at its best– a sweet indulgence I couldn’t put down!” – R.S. Grey, USA Today Bestselling Author

Baking Me Crazy, the first in the romantic comedy Donner Bakery Series of standalones, from Karla Sorensen is available now!

I’m Levi Buchanan, and until five years ago, I thought the legend of my family’s curse was a load of crazy, Southern nonsense.

No curse can make you fall in love at first sight. No curse can force a true, deep, passionate, all-consuming love that will haunt you all the days of your life.

Then I met Jocelyn Abernathy and I realized how completely wrong I was.

The problem is, Jocelyn guards her feelings like well-armed soldier. She’s the most beautiful, stubborn, infuriating woman I’ve ever met. Every time she talks, I want to kiss the living daylights out of her. But I can’t.

Because when we met, she didn’t need true love. She needed a best friend. And that’s what I’ve been to her… for five years.

But when Jocelyn meets a handsome stranger her first day working at Donner Bakery and she lets him buy her a dill pickle cupcake, I realize with ominous regret that I may have missed my window with my best friend.

If I can’t get her to see past our friendship, my new curse may be to watch the love of my life move on with someone else.

‘Baking Me Crazy’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book#1 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt:

“Besides, this is my best friend perk. Shouldn’t I get perks in baked goods?”

She cut me a look. “You’ve been getting those perks for two years, Buchanan. Don’t even pretend you didn’t put on a solid ten pounds that first year I started baking.” Quite pointedly, she looked at my stomach, which we both knew was covered in muscle.

“That’s rude,” I mumbled under my breath. I flexed my bicep. Nero licked my elbow since it was right in front of him. “Yeah, ten pounds in my left arm maybe.”

The noise she made roughly translated to you are ridiculous. She made that sound at me a lot. Of course, the sad truth of the matter was that I was ridiculous.

Not once in the past five years had my feelings lessened for her. I had just learned to live with them. In my junior year of undergrad, I was taking a class on brain pathology in injuries, and a man came to talk to us about how he learned to live without his right arm after it was amputated.

He told us about how, even years after he lost his arm, his brain still triggered sensations to the limb that was no longer there. The adult brain, in particular, struggled to reorganize after the loss of a limb, and given that four out of five amputees suffer from phantom pain symptoms, some of which were incredibly debilitating, it was a lesson that stuck with me.

I wasn’t fool enough to think that me loving Jocelyn was on par with a man who’d lost his arm, but something about the way he talked plucked at a chord inside me. Sometimes my brain struggled to remember that we were just friends.

She’d never dated, never even hinted that she wanted to. She’d never given me a longing glance. Never stared at my mouth like she wondered what it tasted like.

But my hands never, not once, stopped wanting to reach for hers. My fingers always, always itched to dig into her crazy hair and see what the curve of her scalp felt like.

My brain knew what this relationship was, but sometimes, the signals it sent to the rest of my body didn’t always match up with the truth of our situation. We worked out together a lot, Joss and I, and when she got frustrated with the limitations of her body, I always wanted to wrap my arms around her.

I wanted to pull her into the curve of my body, absorb her dissatisfaction into my skin, and carry it for her. That was the irony when she made noises like that.

She had absolutely no clue how ridiculous I really was.

About Karla Sorensen

Karla Sorensen has been an avid reader her entire life, preferring stories with a happily-ever-after over just about any other kind. And considering she has an entire line item in her budget for books, she realized it might just be cheaper to write her own stories. It doesn’t take much to keep her happy…a book, a really big glass of wine, and at least thirty minutes of complete silence every day. She still keeps her toes in the world of health care marketing, where she made her living pre-babies. Now she stays home, writing and mommy-ing full time (this translates to almost every day being a ‘pajama day’ at the Sorensen household…don’t judge). She lives in West Michigan with her husband, two exceptionally adorable sons and big, shaggy rescue dog.

EXCERPT

The sweatshirt hangs past the bottom of my skirt when I pull it on, and I hide my hands in the baggy sleeves on my way off the porch. It takes a second to notice his truck, parked in the shadows a few houses down. I’m almost there when the driver’s door slams shut. Dane steps around the hood and into the yellow cast of a streetlight.

“You need to hurry up.”

“You need to learn patience.”

“I have plenty, just not when it comes to you.” He runs his hands over my hips when I reach him and kisses me hard. “See,” he mumbles. “No restraint.” But he finds some after he backs me to the truck. He jerks open the passenger door and picks me up to set me on the seat. “Scoot over.”

I slide toward the middle, and he crawls in. “How’s your grandpa?”

“Shh,” he says, shutting the door. “He’ll be fine, but right now”—he moves closer and reaches past me for something—“we have business to take care of.”

When his hand reappears, he’s holding a cupcake with a single candle in the middle. I get one more kiss before hearing the flick of a lighter. He tosses it on the dash once the candle burns. The cab illuminates, shadows dancing across his face, and I smile.

“This is so—”

“Cheesy,” he says. “It’s disgustingly cheesy, and I’d hate myself for it if not for that fucking smile.”

I shake my head and touch his cheek. “Sweet. It’s so incredibly sweet.”

The stubble on his jaw scrapes against my skin as he turns to kiss my palm, eyes reflecting the flame when he looks at me again. “Happy birthday, Bennett.”

I lean in, and right as I blow out the candle, his gaze drops to my mouth. I have no idea what happens to my cupcake once the cab darkens. Dane’s mouth slams into mine, both of his hands tugging me over to him. He lifts me—not on top of him, but to the other side so that my shoulders press against the door—and he moves across to where I was a second ago, breaking his mouth away from me.

“What date are we on?” he asks. “Five? Six?”

“Does it matter?” I try to pull him closer, but he won’t budge from his spot in the center of the cab.

“I thought since you don’t fuck on the first date, you’d require at least half a dozen before spreading your legs for me in the truck.”

My feet are on the seat between us, and when his hand skims up from my ankle, I wait for it to reach my knee and drop it to the side. His gaze flashes to mine.

“Sixth date it is.”
