I think that it’s safe to say that THE DOM WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD is the book that I have been waiting for for a verrrry long time. Author Lexi Blake has made the relationship between Kyle Hawthorne and MaeBe Vaughn the slowest of slow burns, and, finally, here we are.

I’m going to be honest. Back in my early days of reading and reviewing, did I think that I would be in love with a world like this one? Heck, no. But then came Ian Taggart and all of his big, crazy family, by blood and by choice, and there was no looking back.

I am completely spoiled by Lexi’s writing in this, the Masters and Mercenaries world, and every other that she’s created. Being deeply invested in the characters, I have been waiting to see these two get their HEA, and, oh, my gosh, did Lexi bring it. Kyle and MaeBe are not perfect, but it’s their quirks, and the ability they have to love each other because, not in spite, of them, that make them really perfect for each other. And, really, with the entirety of the McKay and Taggart families and everyone that they’ve brought in, there was no way that this story wouldn’t end exactly the way that I hoped.

There’s all of the requisite suspense here, and, of course, all of the steam (hello, Sanctum), resulting in a book that I could not put down, and that was all that I’d hoped it would be. Easily one of my favorites in this world (and that’s saying something), THE DOM WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD is a must read for Lexi’s fans both seasoned and new. Grab it, read it, love it. You can thank me later. ❤️

EXCERPT:

“Do you think he’s going to kill you? I know the man seems scary but he’s not. The key with Big Tag is to give as good as you get. Like fight his sarcasm with sarcasm. When he asks how my broom ride in was, I smile and ask him if he rode in on the back of a brontosaurus from his age. I know that sounds harsh, but it made him laugh, and now we’re cool. I spent the first couple of weeks terrified by him, thinking he was this big bully, but he’s actually the sweetest guy.”

The words had been said with a slightly husky feminine tone, and when he turned, sure enough there was a woman. A young woman who looked like she’d walked off the pages of a goth comic book. She was petite, a good foot shorter than him, with two purple pig tails, and she liked black. She had on a black miniskirt with sparkly suspenders over a black button-up. Dark green leggings and combat boots completed the look.

She was absolutely nothing like the two types of women he’d been surrounded by the last decade of his life. Military women who kept things neat and clean and practical, or the sophisticated crowd he’d run in when he’d been a spy. Women who were polished and thought out every single word they said and action made.

The first he would have nodded and made some simple conversation with. The second he would spend some time figuring out to ensure they weren’t here to spy on him.

He had absolutely no idea what to do with the woman in front of him. “Uh, I don’t think he’s going to kill me.”

She was weirdly fascinating. And just plain weird. She had a messenger bag over her shoulder, and the wide strap was decorated with a bunch of buttons, one which proclaimed her the Mistress of Code. She seemed to like code and the color green since she had a big button with the words I Always Play Green and some weird figure on it. “Confident. I like it. Are you a client or a new hire?” She gasped as she seemed to think of something. “Or a new vendor? Because if you are trying to sell the big guy anything that’s not a lemon tart, he might kill you. We should rethink this.”

It was her smile that did it. A small uptick of lips that let him know she was fucking with him and probably fucked with every guy in her life. Not in a “I’m looking to screw you over, take your secrets, and then probably murder you on the way out the door” way he’d gotten used to.
In the “I don’t take life too seriously” way. Like the women he’d been friends with in college. The ones he’d been comfortable with in another lifetime. In the life he’d had before he’d so brutally destroyed everything around him.

He should walk away from this woman. He was toxic, and his world for so long had been blood and secrets and death. She wouldn’t even know how to walk in his world. She also wasn’t his type. The last thing he needed was even a casual flirtation.

“I’m the new guy.” He held out a hand. “Name’s Kyle Hawthorne. I’m starting in the bodyguard unit today.”

She was completely harmless. It wouldn’t hurt to talk to the cute goth chick while he was here. He wouldn’t be here forever. He was giving this two months tops. That should be enough time to satisfy his family and the higher-ups at the CIA that he wasn’t going to do something dangerous. And then he would go do something dangerous.

She reached out, that smile turning into something truly glorious. Her black-tinged lips spread and showed even white teeth, but it was the way that smile lit up her eyes that made him pause. “MaeBe.”

Oh, she was playing with fire because for the first time in months he felt his groin tighten as he took her hand in his and felt an actual fucking spark that probably wasn’t static electricity. He couldn’t help the way his own lips curled up, and the words that flowed out of his mouth could have come from his twenty-year-old self. “Maybe? I would say that’s a little presumptuous of you, but I think I’ll go with it.”

Tracey’s Review

One of my favorite things as a reader is to jump into a book with only a synopsis and knowledge that you’ve really enjoyed the author’s books in the past. I went into END OF STORY by Kylie Scott, having read only a couple of her books, and none of them the ones that are most often mentioned. I am a big fan of friends to lovers, especially those with a twist, and knew that I like Kylie’s style, so in I went. I was absolutely delighted with this story, with Susie and Lars and the whole sort of mystery behind their romance, and so glad that I had the opportunity to read this book.

Kylie has infused Susie, Lars, and really all of the characters, with wit as well as self-knowledge and sensitivity, and their interactions left me smiling and invested in seeing where their journey took them through all of the twists and turns. END OF STORY is a quick read, not because it’s short, but because I didn’t want to stop until I saw how everything turned out for everyone, and I could not put it down.

END OF STORY is a solid 4.5 stars for me, and one of my favorite contemporary romance reads of 2023. I wouldn’t mind at all if we got stories for more of the characters in this world. As a note, END OF STORY is completely different from any of Kylie’s books that I’ve read (or listened to!) in the past. If contemporary romance with characters that you’d want to hang out with are your thing, this one should definitely be on your TBR. Grab it and enjoy! ❤️

A longtime fan of Amy’s books, I have read and loved all of them. The Redemption Hills series are some of her best, because her writing only gets better and more powerful with time. And while Trent and Eden, Jud and Salem, and Logan and Amber, have all found a place in my heart, it was Tessa that I was waiting for, and Amy has absolutely delivered with this book

Tessa McDaniels is the cement of the friend group, the cheerleader, the one that has watched all of her people find their happy endings. “Go, go, go!” Tessa jumped up and down, rooting on Remy who’d thrown the Frisbee and was currently rounding the bases.

I scooped Scout into my arms, and he and I raced toward the Frisbee that’d rolled out the right side of the baseball field.

Scout was bouncing all over, his laughter filling the air, my little guy kicking my sides like I was a horse. “Hurry, Dad, hurry, Remy is so really fast, and we gotta catch her before she gets all the way to home base.”

I dipped down to snag the Frisbee, holding tight to Scout as I tipped him upside down, making him holler and laugh uncontrollably while Tessa was shouting, “You’re almost there, Remy! Whoop, whoop! Team Remy-T Wreckers coming in for the win. Yeah, baby!”

Scout’s eyes went wide. “Go, Dad! We gotta catch her. Rocket speed!”

I shifted him, tucking his side to mine so he could stretch out his arms like he was flying, and I was supplying the rocket propulsion as we bounded back the opposite direction, a bunch of sounds bubbling out of my mouth as I found a lightness I hadn’t felt in a long, long time.

Remy rounded third base.

Tessa jumped up and down on the pitcher’s mound, waving her hands in the air and cheering on my kid. “Go, Remy, go!”

Both their faces were red.

Joy radiated all around.

Guessed it was my joy, too.

This feeling in the air that might have been the best thing I’d ever felt.

Scout kept himself rigid, still zooming through the air. “After burners, Dad!”

I increased my speed a fraction.

Remy screamed and laughed as she ran for home, my daughter soaring free when her steps were often laden with reservation.

Her load too heavy.

I made sure that we just missed her as she stomped onto the base.

“Ahh, dang, you’re too fast.” I feigned the grumbled complaint while my little girl squealed in victory and shouted, “I did it! I did it!”

Tessa ran her way, her arms in the air. “You did it! You are a rockstar, Remington Hendricks!”

They jumped, high-fiving each other with both hands.

“Oh, man,” Scout whined. “We got a tie. How do we even know who’s the best?”

I pressed my lips to the top of his head. “Means we’re all the best, little man.”

“That’s Rocketman to you,” he told me.

A chuckle got free, and Tessa was giggling nonstop, her smile so bright, happiness this glow of warmth that surrounded her.

She poked Scout’s belly where I’d shifted him upright. “Pure awesomesauce, I tell you.”

He jumped out of my arms and into hers.

She caught him like she was completely accustomed to pint-sized shenanigans. “There’s my Rocketman! You’re off to Mars!” she sang as she swung him around.

Peals of his laughter rang in the air, and Remy moved to hold my hand, grinning in a way I hadn’t seen her do in so long that I’d almost forgotten what it looked like.

God, I wasn’t even sure how to navigate through it when I kept getting struck with an urge to capture it.

Hold it and protect it forever.

“Okay, I think that’s my favorite game.” Remy was almost shy to say it, though it was adrenaline and glee rushing all over her face.

“So fun!” Tessa agreed.

Everyone was panting with the exertion, sweat slicking our skin, and we moved back to where we had the blanket set up in the shade.

Tessa flopped down onto her back on it, Scout still held in her arms. Remy flopped right down beside her.

Tessa rolled her head in Remy’s direction so they were staring at each other where they lie on their backs. “Thank you for being on my team.”

“Best team ever.” Timidity might have filled Remy’s voice, but joy shined in her eyes.

They just sat there for a second, smiling at each other, something special moving between them.

Scout climbed off Tessa, and he crawled to the cooler and tossed open the lid. “I spy with my little eye a blue Popsicle.”

Like he hadn’t spotted it earlier when we were passing out sandwiches and fresh-cut fruit.

He reached for one.

“You’re supposed to ask first, little man,” I told him.

“Is it okay, Tessa?” He beamed at her. I was pretty sure those full lips would be enough to swindle the last dollar out of a starving man’s hand.

I blinked at him. “Excuse me? What am I, chopped liver?”

Scout shrugged. “Tessa’s got my back.”

Tessa sat up, pressing her fingertips to her mouth like she was trying to keep back her laughter.

“What are you giggling about?” I asked, voice low as I climbed down onto my knees at the edge of the oversized blanket.

“I think I found myself a couple of new besties.” Her smile softened, pure affection as she glanced between the two of them.

Remy smiled, too, and fuck, my chest tightened.

I loved to see my little girl happy.

“I’ll be your best friend because you brought me a Popsicle,” Scout supplied as he grabbed a handful of them and started to pass them out.

“One for Daddy-Doo, one for Remy-Roo, one for Tessa-Too.”

My kid, he was a poet.

“Dad, you better kiss her if you’re gonna marry her,” Scout said so nonchalant as he peeled the wrapper and stuck the blue bullet into his mouth. “Because in a minute, she’s gonna have blue lips, and that’s gross.”

I knew we were going to have to get these displays of affection right, but my nerves decided it was a fine time to short-circuit.

To go zapping and zinging in all those places she kept bringing to life.

Shaking me down and tightening my guts in a flurry of want as I looked at the woman who watched me with such a tenderness that my spirit groaned.

“You’ve got love, Dad,” Remy whispered.

Soft encouragement that cut me to the quick.

My child’s belief filling me full after I’d lost it.

Warily, I crawled forward on my knees, already towering over Tessa where she sat on the blanket.

I am really loving the Wild Widows series by author Marie Force. Marie excels at writing books and series about families and communities, and the widows are just that, understanding each other the way that only someone having gone through the most devastating of circumstances can do.

SOMEONE TO HOLD is Iris’s and Gabe’s story, and I could not have loved these two more. I really like that they start out as firm friends, and that they know each other so well before their relationship evolves. And because they know themselves and each other so well, there is little of the drama that people less seasoned in life bring, and it’s actually very refreshing to read. Their dynamic, their true enjoyment of and respect for each other as friends, makes their journey to more that much more satisfying, and the support from the other widows makes for an uplifting read.

Marie has set the stage perfectly for the next book in the series, Wynter’s and Adrian’s story, and I can’t wait to see what she’s got in store for them and the rest of the Wild Widows. In the meantime, make sure that SOMEONE TO HOLD is on your TBR, because it is truly lovely. ❤️

I don’t even know how I survived these many years in Romance Land without having been a diehard Kate Canterbary fan from the very first. I’m kicking my own butt for having come so late to the game, but this is my vow to make up for lost time. What started with THE BELLE AND THE BEARD segued into THE WORST GUY, and now I’ve just devoured IN A JAM, the latest book by Kate. Am I in love? Boy, am I ever. I inhaled this book like it was my job, and, let me tell you, I adore every dang thing about it. I mean, how can a book with unrequited love, a hot jam-making farmer that can also sue the pants off you, a six-year-old that cusses like the proverbial pirate, and a friend group to die for be wrong? It can’t, and I am here to tell you that this book is not to be missed.

IN A JAM is one of those gems of a book that will have you both fanning yourself and thinking, ‘Oh, my heart!’ because it’s got everything that a contemporary romance should have, and then some. Author Catherine Cowles continues to both break me and lift me up with the books in her Tattered & Torn series. SHATTERED SEA, the fourth book in the series, is a testament to Catherine’s ability to craft a story that evokes emotion that is both painful and beautiful.

Having met Laiken in the earlier books of the series, paired with the fact that every single story has blown me away, I was certain that I would love SHATTERED SEA, and I was not wrong. Both Laiken and Boden have great back stories, ones that have made them the strong people that they are because of the pain that they’ve suffered. They see something in each other, that something that draws them together despite any reservations that they may have.

Each book in the Tattered & Torn series makes me fall more in love with Catherine’s writing, with her skills as a storyteller, and with a place and its people. I absolutely cannot wait for FRACTURED SKY, Shiloh’s and Ramsey’s story, because the build to see Shiloh get her HEA has been tremendous. I can honestly say that this is one of my top series ever, and wish that every single fan of angsty suspenseful romance would snap these books up and binge them. They are amazing, and you will love them. ❤️
