Michel’s Review

I am always on the look out for new authors to read.  Held Against You by Season Vining was brought to Smut Book Junkie Reviews attention through publisher/ publicist outreach months before the actual book was released.  When I read the synopsis I was intrigued.  It was a combination of two of my favorite genres, New Adult and Romantic Suspense.  I took this generous offer to read the ARC copy for review.

I LOVED Held Against You!  It was  witty, entertaining, adventurous, gritty, and a very sexy read.  The characters were larger than life.  They had personality in spades.  The dialogue was creative, snarky, and intuitive.  The pacing of the story was perfect.  The suspense and high octane was consistent throughout the story and had readers guessing the outcome to the very end.  It had the right amount of sexual tension, emotional passages, and passionate moments.  This book was a little less graphic in the bedroom scenes but was not lacking in projecting the red hot passion and chemistry between the characters.  The entire plot to this story was unique and fresh.  When I finished this book I was amazed at how much I enjoyed it.  It was a page turner that kept my attention to the very last page.

Held Against You was not your typical angsty New Adult book. It may have been classified in this genre because of the characters age and general life experience, but they were not tormented angsty souls.  They had a very defined situation that they had to deal with.  They dealt with this situation to the best of personal abilities ( I say this loosely, because both characters fall in opposite sides of the spectrum, therefore they dealt with things to their individual ability).  Somehow, even though they had opposing roles in their situation, they were able to merge and find a solution that worked for both of them.

Held Against You is not your typical romantic suspense either.  There are several players in the story and at times the reader is not sure who the bad guy is.  The danger and fear does escalate to an explosive ending, but the journey getting there is full high octane explosions that have the reader wondering where this is leading.  It was not predictable.

Held Against You starts out with a fast paced heart racing moment.  The reader gets to meet Kat.  She is on the run.  She committed murder and is trying to get to the Canadian border.  She is penniless and without means for survival.  Through sheer wit she manages to elude the authorities.  Little does she know that a bounty hunter has been sent to collect her.  Her determination and wit has kept her out of his grasp for over a month.  He is tired, cranky, and pissed off that one little woman could elude him in the flash of an eye. But luck is on his side and he finally is able to capture her.  Bringing her back is going to turn out to be an even bigger nuisance than capturing her was.  It is going to be the road trip from hell.  Kat is more than a murderer, she is a snarky pain in the butt.  She doesn’t know when to shut up and she doesn’t know how to obey.  What seems like easy money is going to make him earn every penny.  It may make him grow a conscience and change his profession, or it may make him change his profession for peace and quiet.

All is not what it seems.  As the story unfolds it becomes quite clear that there really isn’t a right and wrong, black and white.  Kat’s life is every shade of grey.  Is her head worth the money it is going to bring? Or is there a sinister motive for the hunt?

Read this book! It will not disappoint!  I loved every word!

I was so impressed with Season Vining’s writing.  I had to go and download her previous book, Beautiful Addictions.  I think that she is going to make her mark in the book lovers world.

Excerpt

“Close your eyes, Ayden,” he begins with a droning tone. “You’re in a safe place, where no one can hurt you. Now let your mind relax.”
Like always, I fleetingly feel like I’m falling.
Down.
Down.
Down.
Then I crash into a wall.
You can’t think about it.
You aren’t allowed.
There was a reason.
For your amnesia.
You think we’d let you off that easy.
You think we’d really let you go.
Don’t think too much.
Or you’re going to lose control.
We’re going to come after you.
Pale eyes… thin bodies…. yellow teeth… blue and red lights flash as sirens near closer to the home. Someone is banging on the door, shouting, “Open up!”
My sister lifts her head, life in her eyes for the first time. My brother is curled up in the corner though, thin, fail, so close to death.
Our capturers flee, but not without an impending warning.
“No one escapes,” the woman whispers as she stabs her fingernails into my hands. “We’ll come back for you.” Her face… blurred… but the pain… is excruciating.
My eyelids spring open to the patch on the ceiling. The room is quiet, but my heart thunders like a storm inside my chest.

Exceprt

I’ve been seated among the dozens of other passengers for the past two hours, watching the gate times change a number of times before I see the plane actually arrive. Just as I’m powering my phone down, preparing to board, an awful stench burns my nose from a few inches away. A middle-aged man with greasy black hair and a thick lip-covering mustache who smells exactly like the inside of a port-a-potty has found a reason to sit directly beside me in a row of empty seats. When my eyes unfortunately meet his, he takes the opportunity to speak to me. “Heading to Boston?” he asks. I raise my eyebrows and force a tightlipped smile. I simply follow that with a nod and give him a no shit look. “I heard winter’s coming early this year,” he continues.

“Cool,” I mumble with a sigh. I pull a magazine out of my bag and open it in front of my face, hoping to block my vision of the man’s blackened-stained grin. But it’s only seconds before I’m taken back when his finger sweeps down the bare skin of my collarbone.

“What does that mean?” he asks, pointing to my tattoo.

With a smooth motion, I lay my magazine down onto my lap and place my hand over his, giving him the false notion that I’m a gentle person. I take the opportunity to offer him a slight smile before I twist his forefinger backwards as far as it will go before the expectant snap. “I’m sorry,” I say sweetly. “Did I tell you it was okay to touch me?” I pull down a little harder, and he smiles in response to the pain. But as I hold my hand there, I see the smile begin to fade.

“It’s a free country, chicky,” he sputters as his tongue knocks around between his bare gums.

“Why would you think it’s okay to touch me?” I ask again, keeping my voice calm, yet stern. He licks his lips and looks me up and down, responding with only a look. “Do you go around touching girls half your age because you feel it’s okay?”

He clears his throat and looks around to see who’s watching or listening, but I don’t move my eyes from his. “Why not?” he says, shrugging his bony shoulders. “Besides, you’re definitely asking for it.”

He thinks I’m asking for it? I’m wearing a fucking scoop neck, black long sleeve shirt, jeans, and combat boots. “The only reason it’s okay, is because no one has ever probably told you no. But it occurs to me that after I snap your finger off your hand, you won’t be able to touch people inappropriately anymore, will you?”

He hoots with laughter, dragging in attention he probably shouldn’t want. “You think you could break my finger, little chicklette?”

I pull his finger a little further, and his smile grows. “Ow, stop. You’re hurting me,” he puckers his lips and winks at me.

“Oh, look, it’s your right hand. You a righty?” I turn his hand over and see deep callouses bubbling on his palm. “Yes, you are. So, if I rip this thing off, you wouldn’t miss it, right?” I turn his hand back over and glare into his beady eyes. He’s questioning my words. He’s unsure of my capabilities. And that’s fine. “Sound okay to you? Or are you going to leave and stop touching people?” His smile fades and his eyes widen. I release his hand and offer him a smart-ass smile. “Oh, and the tattoo means death. It’s a Maori Warrior symbol. They used to eat their enemies once they slaughtered them. Cool, huh?”

I see his Adam’s apple struggle to move. He lifts his bag from the ground and nearly trips over his own feet, darting away.

I reopen my magazine to the page I was reading and refocus my attention on an article as I hear a soft chuckle coming from the other side of me. I turn to see who was enjoying the free entertainment and I’m faced with a man who looks to be either a wrestler or in the military–black shaven hair, stiff jaw and bulging muscles on every inch of his arms. His eyes are currently focused on a book, and I suppose he could have been laughing at that, rather than me. But as I question it, his large shamrock green eyes lift and look right at me. A slight grin tugs on the corner of his lips, and he winks so quickly I’m questioning whether it was me who might have blinked. Before I can react, he stands up and walks away.

I swallow hard and refocus my attention on the magazine once more. Stupid attractive man causing a moment of feebleness. I didn’t react, though. He winked at me. I think. And I didn’t make a snide comment or scowl. Weakness.

I let out a few short breaths, regaining my composure. He’s gone. It’s fine.

Michel’s Review

TAG is the first book that I have read by Shari J. Ryan.  I was given an ARC to review for this sale promotion.  I was intrigued by the synopsis and by the fact that it combined two of my favorite genres to read.

TAG starts off on a pulsing fast pace.  The very first chapter has your heart racing and mind intrigued.  From there the reader is completely engaged in the story.  It has an original plot, strong characters, sexual tension, climatic moments, and emotional passages that have the reader close to tears.  The plight of these two people are on very different paths that merge together and lead them down the same road.  For each of the them the outcome could be very different.  For each the them it could be life changing.  For each of them it is their only chance of survival.  What they find along the way are some very rare gifts that neither thought they would ever have.  They find the love that only happens once in a lifetime.  They also find the one thing neither of them has in their lives.  They find hope.

TAG is a very moving story.  The intense storyline, the fast paced action, and emotional elements will have your adrenaline high and heart racing.

Shari J. Ryan’s writing is crisp, fresh, and engaging.  She created charismatic characters and gave them life.  Their story grabs the reader’s attention and their personalities grab the readers hearts.

I highly recommend TAG.  It is a story that you will not forget.

One of my goals for 2015 was to read books that I had purchased in 2014 but did not have time to get to.  Take Me For Granted by K.A. Linde was one of those books.  With the upcoming release of Take Me With You coming out on January 27, 2015, I made this book a priority to read.

I absolutely love bad boy rock star books.  Take Me For Granted is one of those books that shines in this category.  Grant McDermott is the front man for the popular rising band Contriband.  Their band is one of the favorites among the Princeton community.  Grant is your typical bad boy manwhore.   He takes full advantage of his popularity among the Princeton ladies.  Women are easy come, easy go until he meets the one girl that is not taken by his bad boy charms.  Her snarky personality and sass has him intrigued. Her rejection has him on the chase for the first time in his life.  Her intelligence tests his wits.  She is the one girl he is not going to let get away.  What starts out as a quest to get Aribel into his bed turns into a whole different kind of challenge.  Grant has finally met a girl that he wants to be in a relationship with.  Can he give up his bad boy ways and become a better man, a man that is worthy of Aribel or will he blow the one thing that can really make his life better?

Aribel is a young woman that has her goals in life set.  Her education and academic career is the most important agenda.  She doesn’t have time for dating and frivolous college life.  Her goals have held her back and made her socially inept .  When her roommates force her to go out for a fun night on the town , her life is changed.  She meets the kind of guy she absolutely despises.  She meets the lead singer of the local band that has all the girls from school vying to get into his bed.  She is not immune to Grant’s charismatic personality.  She is not as unaffected as she wants to be.

Grant and Aribel both have challenges in their relationship.  Neither of them has ever been in a successful relationship. They both are polar opposites with very different goals in life.  Somehow the two of them recognize that what they have is more than a college fling, it is something that could last a lifetime.  They will have to get past their own personal obstacles , get past their friends expectations, and find a way to blend their very different lives together.

Just as everything is finally rolling along on a smooth path in their relationship, Grant’s band is gaining recognition.  They are on the brink of signing a recording contract.  Can their relationship survive the fame and the rockstar lifestyle?

This book ends on a cliffhanger and has the reader biting at the bits for the upcoming book, Take Me With You.

The characters and their story was highly entertaining.  K.A. Linde delivered the sexy and thrilling romance she has come to be known for.  This book had the right amount of angst and the right amount of fluff.

I highly recommend this book and series.

Tina’s Review

Novella, under 100 pages.
It’s been six months since Finn’s father ran Tess out of town. Now, seven months pregnant, she’s returned to town with only two goals: attend granddaddy’s funeral and see her niece or nephew be born. Then she plans to leave town again before Finn’s father can act upon the threats he’d made against her loved ones. But things are not that simple. The closing scene of WALK ME DOWN overlaps with the opening scene of WALK BESIDE ME, providing a seamless continuance of the story. The characters are the same as before, only several circumstances have shifted or altered. Dialogue is believable, interaction is natural. HJ Bellus writes in a style that flows extremely smooth, making the pages fly by like nothing. It’s a very pleasurable experience. The plot is pretty good, for being so short. While it has plenty of dynamics to carry it, it lacks the fullness of a full-length novel. Several aspects of the conflicting elements were predictable, but it wasn’t until moments before the reveal that I knew what was going to happen (My Opinion: Blech! LOL)! This finale novella closes Finn’s and Tessa’s story off with solidly. I enjoyed this 2-piece set rather well.

Synopsis

From the New Adult sensation and New York Times bestselling author of Rival

Jaxon is the guy she’s supposed to avoid. K.C. is the girl he won’t let get away….

Michel’s Review

For fans of the Fall Away series this book has been highly anticipated.  Jaxon Trent has been a real enigma since he was introduced into the series. He is the younger brother to Jared Trent.  He came from an abusive background and multiple foster homes. He is smart, quiet, mysterious, and beautiful.  His intelligence has opened doors, not necessarily good ones, and gave him power in his life.  He is the extreme opposite of his brother Jared.  He is not one to react.  He bides his time, plans his actions, and strikes.  All of those are just impressions the reader has walked away with.  We really don’t know the true extent of all that is Jaxon Trent until we read Falling Away.

We also  met K.C. Carter in book one and continued to see glimpses of her throughout the series. She is the snooty and frivolous girl that seems mindless.  Although she was portrayed in a very negative manner in Bully, readers couldn’t help but like her anyways.  Most of us understood the whole high school mentality and foolish decisions K.C. made.  We also understood that she was involved in a very stifling relationship that was harmful to her being.  What was odd and hard to understand was the attraction between her and Jax, who is a year younger and polar opposite.  How could these two come together?

Falling Away has the turbulent and combustible plot we have come to expect in this series.  It also had quite a few surprises.  The biggest surprise was K.C. Carter.  She is not what we were led to believe.  Her life has been just as harsh as Jax’s life.  While she might not have experienced all of the violence that Jax did, she did suffer from abuse.

When a bad decision and freeing moment forces K.C. to return home to serve out her sentence of community service, it also forces her to face everything she has deeply hidden away.  It also puts her in Jax’s life once again.  This time Jax plans on keeping her around long enough to conquer her and break her down.  But Jax is for a big surprise.  K.C. is more than he anticipated and when the real K.C. Carter is revealed she may just break Jax.

These two are not the polar opposites we were led to believe.  Now they will have to break each other down and build each other up, one kiss and touch at a time.

This story kept me glued to the pages.  It was well written, full of emotional angst, turbulent moments, steamy love scenes, and stunning surprises.  The biggest surprise is at the end and left readers with their jaws hanging on the ground.  I won’t spoil the moment.  I will just say that readers are going to be pre-ordering the upcoming novella, Aflame, coming April 21, 2014.  Let me say, I love the direction this series is headed.

Synopsis

My name is Benjamin Dorsey. You know my mom and dad’s story. You know Kylie’s parents’ story. You even know Kylie’s story.

You don’t know mine, yet.

You don’t know what a broken heart is until you’ve loved someone your whole life, only to have her slip through your fingers because you waited too long. That’s heartbreak. That’s regret. And how do you live with that? How do you go through the motions when she’s there as a reminder of what you lost, of what you could have had but were too damn chicken to go after? I couldn’t. So I left.

That’s right, I ran away. I found myself across the continent, playing minor league football. I mean, at least I still had football, right?

Nope. That got taken away from me too. A career-ending injury left me down-and-out, scraping the bottom of the barrel, hating myself and hating life. And then I met Cheyenne Leveaux, my physical therapist, who became my one and only friend, the one bright light in the darkness of my messed up life.

But of course nothing is ever simple, or easy.

Tragedy struck, and the rug was swept out from under me yet again, and this time the guilt, the doubt, the secrets, and the old heartbreak may threaten my one chance at true happiness, my one shot at my own happily ever after.

Michel’s Review

Falling Away is the epic ending to the Falling Into You series by Jasinda Wilder.  It was a bittersweet moment opening this book and knowing that it was the last in one of my all time favorite series.  The characters in this series have lived in my heart and are unforgettable.

After reading the last book, Falling Under, I was devastated for Ben.  He was a great kid that had his heart shattered.  He showed the ugly and uncontrollable side of his personality.  He acted out in the worst possible way.  His soul was wounded and he was reacting the only way he knew how.  He had carried so many pent up emotions that when the door opened it was a floodgate of pain, betrayal, regret, and anger.  I ached for this boy.  I felt his deep pain.  I wanted him to find the peace and love he so richly deserved.  Ben found more than that.  He found himself.  He found a man that had honor, compassion, and hope.

The book starts a year after Ben left Nashville trying to run from his heartbreak and despair.  What Ben didn’t realize at the time is that he was running from himself.  It took many miles,  odd jobs, new experiences, and new heartbreaks to open his heart once again. He finds his passion for football once again.  He finds a place he may want to call home for a spell. He finds that he can be attracted to another woman other than Kylie.  He finds a true friend that understands his heartbreaking journey.  Just as things are looking bright in Ben’s life he is thrown into despair once again.  He loses his only passion and he loses his only true friend.  This time around Ben has grown emotionally and matured.  He hasn’t come completely into himself but is much stronger than he was a year ago.  He also recognizes that a new door is opening and that this time he doesn’t want to slam it shut.  He’s not quite ready to welcome the new people & experiences at the door, but he isn’t turning them away.  He is opening that door.

Ben meets Echo through a very tragic circumstance.  She is unlike any girl or woman he has ever met.  He sees a very beautiful woman that has a very wounded soul.  Although he doesn’t understand all of her pain, he knows without a doubt he wants to ease it and help her cope.  What starts out as a pain easing hookup turns into a soul searching friendship to a passionate love affair that stands the test of time.  But first Echo and Ben have to face their pain and allow others into their soul.

Echo is a very troubled young woman.  Her life experiences have led her to a self destructive and abusive path.  She has trust issues, self worth issues, and loads of regret. Her escape is through music.  When music isn’t enough to ease the pain she will have to face herself or destroy herself.  Ben shows her a different look at life.  He shows her that healing doesn’t erase the person you are, it makes you stronger and better.

Ben and Echo both have their journeys to travel but destiny has thrown their paths together.  Now they have to learn to open their hearts and travel that path together.

I loved this book.  The reader got to experience Ben’s transition from a wounded boy into a strong and steady man.  A man with a bright and shiny future.  He was given something better than he ever could of dreamed of having with Kylie.  He was given himself as well as a love of a lifetime.

There were a few things in this book that I struggled with but did not affect my overall reaction to the story.  There was an excessive amount of references to songs, the performers, and musicians.  While I understand the importance of music in this series, I found it distracting in many passages.  Another thing I found I disliked quite a bit was that Ben’s parents, Becca and Jason (from Falling Into Us- book 2 ), played a very small role in the overall picture. Jasinda emphasized Colt and Nell’s presence throughout the second part of the book.  I understand that they are the foundation of the series but quite honestly I felt like Jason and Becca importance was slighted.  They were both powerful characters that overcame advisory in a very positive manner.  They experienced pain, heartbreak, abuse, and the hard knocks life had to offer.  They overcame their plights and became very strong admirable adults.  I feel like they had so much more to offer their son Ben than Jasinda allowed them to.

I am happy that Ben became the man he is today.  I am happy that he found the peace in his life.  I am happy that he found Echo.

I am very sad that this series has ended but am looking forward to the spin off series coming in the future.

I have nothing but pure praise for Jasinda Wilder.  She writes a powerful and emotional reading experience that stays in your heart long after the book is finished.

~ She was hoping for a hero, but never realized who she would save. ~

This is a contemporary, new adult romance serial. For 18+ readers.

Kate Samuel thought she had left it all behind. The life of a billionaire’s daughter, and her incessant search for her macho hero type.

When she saved a neighbor’s young son during a fire at her new row house home in lower Manhattan, everything changed. And firefighter Lieutenant Matt Lewis made it all the more confusing.

Yeah…he was hotter than any man she imagined being with, but could he be just like the rest of the hero heart-breakers?

—————————–
This serial takes place in New York, less than a month before Christmas. Kate is a radio DJ with a specialty in Communications and Social Media Strategy. She’s dreamed of having a Hero of her own for years, but the one she found in college used and abused her. When Kate rescues a young neighbor boy from a house fire, she’s suddenly a viral sensation and local hero, although her efforts warranted a hero to help her in return. With her home now burned to nothing, the homeless heroine somehow finds herself staying with her personal hero – in his home and in his arms.
All goes fine for a few days until a visitor shows up at Matt’s house and drops a bombshell of a cliffhanger… to be continued in HERO FOR ME.
There were several minor errors noted (an extra, missing, or misplaced word) throughout the book, however it’s not so bad that it completely ruins the overall vibe and flow – but I’d consider having a sit-down with the proofreader if I were Ms Love-Wins.
The characters, primary and secondary, are very likable. They have good dialogue and interaction. The flow of the book is decent, when not taking into account the minor errors (only 4 or 5). The plot was good for being such a short story, but did not have a lot of conflicting elements in it yet – it was more character development and plot set-up. Predictability was extremely low. This novella does not conclude but leaves it open for the next episode.

~ She was hoping for a hero, but never realized who she would save. ~

This is a contemporary, new adult romance serial. For 18+ readers.

Kate Samuel met the handsome Lieutenant Matt Lewis, and it seemed like everything changed. He seemed like the only genuine man she knew, even though he was also a billionaire.

When her ex-coworker Joy announces that Matt is her man, all Kate’s faith disappeared. It was a painful reminder about all the hero heart-breakers she had already experienced first hand.

Were her instincts all wrong? Was Matt just another two-timing billionaire?

————————
So, we’ve already met the characters and have begun to learn a little of each of their back stories. The plot continues where HERO leaves off. Kate leaves Matt’s and moves into a hotel near the radio station where she is threatened by a strange man after he breaks her door down. Part two of the serial abruptly ends at the Fire Fundraiser with an explosive cliffhanger to be continued in episode 3, HERO FOR CHRISTMAS.
Again, the characters are above average and likable, the plot is short but filled with good interaction. There is a little more dynamics in this episode of the serial than the last. The dialogue in a few places is not quite natural, but overall it’s pretty good. There were more conflicting elements in this novella to add a little more depth to the plot, which was very nice, but as is the nature of a serial, the conflict has no resolve as of yet. I am pleased to also find very little predictability. The ending is left open for the next episode to continue onward. Happily, I can also say I found less errors (added, missing or misused words) in this episode, however there were still two or three that I’d noticed that made it past the proof-reader.

Kate Samuel and Lieutenant Matt Lewis were finally together. With Kate’s attacker still on the loose, it didn’t seem like they could ever have peace of mind. Even with the power and wealth of Matt’s billionaire status, they were not safe.

When the men behind Kate’s attack threaten her life again, Matt takes matters into his own hands. Their escape to the Hamptons for Christmas seems like the perfect solution. But was Kate ready to face the ghosts of her Christmas past?

—————————
Part three picks up precisely where HERO FOR ME leaves off… Kate has just unveiled what she thought was the fourth corporate donor’s check at the Fire Fundraiser event only to reveal a threatening message addressed to her. Now they’re off to the Hamptons where security is tight as they prepare for the Charity Christmas Ball.
Same characters following the timeline, still likable. I have a minor issue with the dialogue at times with her using his name & he using hers on such a regular basis. That’s something a stranger does to implant another person’s name into the brain. The conversation during sexual encounters feels awful scripted as well. Other than that, the plot is decent and it flows well. There’s one error that I just could NOT overlook… it occurs on Christmas Day morning. The comment Matt makes BETWEEN “God, Kate.” and “I need you more than air.” Who’s Kara? I mean, that would have been like a bucket of ice water to me – and essentially was. Once more, the novella leaves off with a cliffhanger. This one is not as spectacular as the last and not as grand as it could have been.

SERIES OVERALL: I noticed Matt does not seem to work at the firehouse or at his businesses too often and everyone’s more that willing to accommodate him taking time off. He can be assuming and controlling one minute, then contrite the next. If demanding doesn’t work, he turns on the charm and pleads. She wants her independence but enjoys the efforts he puts forth in taking care of her… she wants it all.
The novellas are each under one hundred pages in length and it is a serial, so one leads into the next and so forth. There are no solid conclusions, there ARE cliffhangers at the ends. The overall plot is good, but again, with the short nature of each episode or part in the serial it’s really hard to feel the dynamics of it. One of the things I enjoyed most about this series so far is it’s ability to do just the opposite from what I’d been expecting it to do. There was no predictability for me.
My biggest concern was that Ms. Love-Wins’s proofreader was sleeping on the job when this passed their desk. It should never have gone to publication with the errors it has. Yes, it contains graphic sex but the series DOES come with a warning for the more easily offended readers. Watch for the back end review in early to mid-February, after parts 4 and 5 are released.

Synopsis

Emery

You want to know my secrets? What lies beneath the pretty? The scars I can’t let anyone see? The scars tied to my secrets?
On the outside I appear normal. Some might even say perfect.
They say that I’m a pretty girl. They say I should be happy. They say that I have nothing to be angry about. That I’m popular. A cheerleader. That I’m perfect.
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
But all they see is what’s on the outside.
On the inside I’m raw, open, bleeding. Scars that can’t seem to heal the wounds.
Carrying dark secrets about who I really am.
How afraid I am to tell the truth.
And it’s slowly killing me.

Ryler

Tattoos. Piercing. Scars. The guy who can’t speak.
Gothic freak. Mute. Punk. I’ve heard it all.
They say that I’m probably dangerous. They say people should stay away from me.
They say. They say. They say.
But who are they anyway?
To decide what I am.
They don’t know what’s hidden beneath the scars. Beneath the piercings and tattoos.
The secrets I keep hidden beneath the silence.
Maybe if they knew, they wouldn’t fear me so much.
Then again, maybe they’d fear me more.

Excerpt

“How long have you lived here?” I recline against the railing of the stairway and wrap my arms around myself as the cool air nips at my skin.

He rubs his jawline with one hand while the other spells away, “A couple of months. It’s been an interesting change to go from Sin City to here.”

“Sin City?” Strands of my hair fall into my face as I angle my head to the side in confusion. “What’s that?”

“It’s a nickname for Vegas.”

“Why is it called that?”

A pucker forms at his brows as he brings his finger to his mouth and traces it back and forth across his bottom lip and over his lip ring. I’m absolutely mesmerized by the movement, drawn in by it to the point where I actually contemplate kissing him. I’ve never just planted one on a guy before; Evan was in total control of the relationship.

Ryler moves his hand away from his lip and bites on his lip ring. “Because it’s a city with sins tempting people at every corner—gambling, booze, sex.”

About a year ago, I lost my virginity to Evan, but standing here, watching Ryler sign sex while sucking on his lip ring, makes me feel like a virgin again.

“Oh,” is all I manage to get out of my mouth.

I only breathe normally again when he releases the metal from his teeth and drops his cigarette to the ground.

“So, about the party.” He gestures at the door. “Do you want to come in for a while? They’re playing cards and there are drinks and snacks and stuff. Plus, your papers are in there.” His lips quirk to a half grin and my stomach somersaults.

Do I want to come in?

Boy, do I want.

A lot.

Even through the fear, I want to go through that door.

More than I’ve ever wanted to do anything in my entire life.

In the back of my mind, I hear the voices of my mother, father, and Evan whispering that what I’m about to do is wrong. I’m not being who I’m supposed to be. I’m being all wrong, imperfect. I’m surrounding myself with unbeautiful people, according to their standards.

I smile the biggest smile that’s ever graced my lips, even though I’m terrified out of my mind. “A party sounds fun. I’ve never actually been to one.”

“You seriously are sheltered, Emery.” He reaches for the doorknob but pauses. “I can help you change that.” He winks at me.

The disapproving voices in my head continue to chant as I follow him inside and into the unknown. But the music swallows them up as soon as I step over the threshold. Everything in my mind quiets the moment I step into the room. Everything is still for the first time in my life without taking the medication.
